View Full Version : Berserk
I've just caught Berserk manga (don't ask for it, it's licensed!), and I'm a bit confused here. Actually how does the books work? I mean, how are the chapters shared? What's this "Revenge" stuff before the chapters? Does "Sword Wind" count as chapter 1? :eyespin:
As far as I know (I may be wrong), there's Revenge 1-16, after that there's the chapters 1-186. Can someone tell me how Berserk's chapters work?
well from what ive gathered, the first chapter in volume one is titled "Black Swordsman". The second chapter is titled "The Brand" and the third is the first chapter of the revenge arc. Revenge 16 ends at volume 5. Which means the third chapter in the book is chapter 01 of the series. There should be 216 regular chapters, 16 revenge chapters, and the first two.
Actually Vicious I must admit that I didn't understand what was your problem ^^
So I will just said that there is 228 regular chapter not 216 :p
There is a so called "missing chapter" which doesnt appear in volume 13 but its labeled as ch 83 around the net. so if ure searching for it u usually ask for ch 83. anyways check this website out http://www.skullknight.net/index2.htm its got all the info u need.
Hmm actually nojevo answered for me, he's right. There's 216 regular chapters, and Revenge 1-16. I'm so happy book 26 is coming out in December! :D
No no 228, I already have the volume 26 since what? 2 month? :p

it helps that miura takes month long breaks after every 3 issues or so.
Yeah Berserk is his masterpiece, so he take his times to imagine the story.
But I prefer that rather than he precipitates and than he does a less good story.
Has anyone here read berserk and want to chat a little about it?

i've read it nice manga i've reached up to vol 25 i really liked the chatacter development and it has a very deep story.
but why did u creat a new thread about it if u have searched u would have found an old thread discussing it u should have just revived the discussion, then again that thread was about how many chapters were in the manga so i think its allright to discuss it here dont know about the mods though if they will allow it or not
I didnt knew that chapters after 216 came out already.
is volume 26 out already or will it really be scanslated in december.
And when it comes out where can i get it (legal from the internet) or on ebay?
(i think this smiley  looks like ubrik)
i think that smiley looks like giichi, but that's for another topic entirely.
edit: i believe vol 26 is coming out this month.... is what i've read.... so that would mean that the chapters in vol 27 are in the making.

So far, there's 26 books out in Japan. The scanslated version of book 26's coming out in 12/19, by *that group* :D
Oh yeah, I've just finished book 25. It's so cool! It's good they're centering the story on Gats and Griffith now. I just can't hate Griffith, he's just following his dream after all, and he said he'd do anything to achieve it...
And Hunter-san, I agree with you. Berserk's one of the best mangas I've ever read, it's better if Miura-sama don't rush things, since Berserk's a wonderful story.
About your 2nd question, Nen-san. Berserk's sure one of the most detailed mangas I've ever read. It has a very nice story, and very good drawings. It's cool since it shows all Gats life, since his birth until he became the black swordsman, by now. Maybe Miura-sama'll show a ol' gezeer Gats at the end of Berserk? :D But there are more detailed mangas, IMO. Such as AKIRA and the wonderful story called 20th Century Boys :D
gotta agree! very detailed, and i hope it continues to be so, i haven't read vol 2 & 3, but the story seems to follow everything that happens to gatts.
anycase i gotta agree that 20th CB and Akira are both amazing manga as well....
Can't wait for Dec 19th. Also, in jan. 14th too since vol.2 would be release by dark horse. Then I would be buying Vol1 and 2. By any chance, you guys know if dark horse edited/censor anything out? Quite new to buying Manga so dont' know the rep of any manga company in Us and how they edit japanese manga.
i got vol 1 scanslated somewhere and i got d-horse's and it seems to be the same.... so as far as i can tell there was no censoring of anything.
huju now i finaly know that there will be more that just one more volume in the next time.
Even if it is in english so where can i down load it when it is released? Please give me a link an adress or even a torrent.
Thanks Fen

It's there. You just need to highlight after that 3 dot. I used white text. You have to copy and paste. Sorry, dont' know how to make it become a link where you just need to click on it.
Does somebody know where I can order part 26 on the internet?
I bought the other 25 when I was in Japan but really can't wait for 26 till I'm going to Japan again.
ps Anybody played the game on the dreamcast. I thought it was pretty cewl.
try Ebay amazon BOL or just Google it.
26 will be released by *that group* this Friday. Can't wait for it :D
And no, can't tell where you can get it, since it's licensed ;)

Well I tried finding it at those sites but to no avail.
It could be because I normally don't use those sites and therefor don't know where to look (and yes I used the search engine but there were only english versions poping up).
Thx anyway
So would anybody know a site where I could get the japanese versions from, and I mean the legit ones, not those from *that group*.
Hunter, u say that u already got 26, so where did u get it from?

Thx for the url, it's very useful.
Maybe you should wait until it is released to look for it at those sites
Hmm keep seeing that people won't talk about the manga since it's licensed and won't give out links. FYI Only the 1st 3 volumes got licensed, so it is ok to still download the later volumes for the time being. That being said, the Hawks will be scanlating Vol 26 but i am not sure when they will be done. Vol 26 just release officially today in Japan so picking it up on a Manga website probally won't be hard now.
I just reread Hawks post and realize that they are releasing it AROUND the 19th. So that could be the 24th for all we know. :( Darn it I was looking forward to the 19th. Wow, I thought vol.26 was release like a few month ago.

That's, quite honestly, a load of shit.
If it's true, I'd like to know their source.
Why would they license only 3 volumes? >.>';;
Well when i got my hands on the scans from the hawks, they had a torrent from volume 4 and up. they didnt include the first three volumes. I guess what Xiandu said has some truth behind it, but i'm not sure.
Easy you want some back-up on the matter, easy go to Darkhorse Comics website. Again the reason only 3 vol was licensed is because of the graphic content, they wanted to make sure that the manga would sell to the general public and not get chopped to pieces due to cenorship laws here in America. We all know that Berserk isn't your little brother's or sister's manga.

That's just what they've announced so far.
You honestly think that when companies like ADV list the first 3 dvds of a 6 disc release as being available, they've only licensed the first 3 dvds worth of episodes?
Of course not. In fact, they'll likely get everything as it comes out in Japan. They didn't step into this without thinking, which is why Digital Manga is doing it and not Studio Proteus, it's unflipped and unedited. It also has a "For Mature Readers" label on it so you know it's not for the kiddies.
Sorry, but it's all licensed. No excuses accepted.
If it is really not licensed then you can tell me where i can get the latest volume in the internet, because it is already released and i cant find it.
The latest volume out right now, is vol 25 by the Hawks. i can't give you the link, but you can find it by google. Vol 26 will be released by them soon, but they are awaiting the manga to arrive, it just came out in japan on the 19th. It will be ready and able to download when they get enough time to do so. It is the holidays, so give them at least a week if not more to scan and translate it.

Well, the original press release read With a release scheduled for fall 2003, Dark Horse and Digital Manga will present Berserk as three volumes in a non-westernized format.
http://www.absolute-0.com/the_pr/2003/pr-darkhorse-berserkannouncement_3-10-2003.htm
This led many people, including me, to believe that they had licensed only the first three volumes, but optioned the rest, and if the first volumes sold well, they would exercise that option and get the rest.
The current press release (edited 4/30/2003) on the Dark Horse website doesn't have any mention of three volumes.
It's actually not TOO uncommon for long series to have only the first few numbers licensed and the rest optioned. However, any announcement usually just says it's licensed, not how much is licensed. An option and a license are basically the same; an option only means they don't have to pay until they decide to publish it. No other company can license it out from under you.
Personally I believe the Berserk option scenario. However, that doesn't mean that the rest of the books won't be licensed until after book 3 comes out. The option could be exercised at any time, with no fanfare. Maybe after the first book's sales numbers come in. Maybe after the second. It's doubtful they'd wait until the third, because when the third book's gone to press, it's logical they'd be working on the fourth book already.
Actually the animated series only covers vol1-12 and half of 13, the other half of 13 deals with how Gatsu is saved. Don't want to say more than that because i don't want to spoil it for anyone. Oh and yes, they do leave some important characters and details out. Dunno how they would do a second season, probally part of the reason one has not been done yet, the anime kinda ruins the story in a way since it left out so many key players. A season 2 would seem thrown together if they all of a sudden introduce characters that should have been shown from the start. I have no idea how they would do it with out making it seemed forced.
I didn't like the anime very much either. They left aside various important passages of the manga, such as the attack of the Black Dogs. And Pakk didn't even appear at the beginning (differently from the manga), he's without a doubt the funniest character in the manga.
And the manga gets much more interesting after Gats turns into the Black Swordsman. In other words, the really cool part of the manga begins just after the end of the anime IMO (even if the 1st part of the history of the Hawks was really cool).
Volume 26 is finally realeased by the hawks!!!
hurray
Damn, vol 26 rocked, finally there is something about berserk in Berserk. :) Too bad we have to wait another half a year for the next volume. :(
I've sure waited long enough for vol 26.

well, the first half of the new berserk volume SUCKED (excluding that woman who created her body from troll intestines :D ) but that berserker armor is pretty damn cool. i only wish that gatts wouldn't have to wear that damn skull helmet, now he looks too much like skull knight (fucking do gooder undead bitch pisses me off.) and speaking of skull knight, it is nice to be explained why he ate the behielit those oh so many volumes ago. when I saw him do that i was like "WTF???"

Well, my roomates are up to date on the manga online. Meanwhile, I'm gonna take my time with the printed edition. Nothing like holding the book in youre ahnd to read. I got Vol 1 of the US version from Darkhoese for Christmas. (is there no better Christmas gift from your folks than the mutilation and gore of Berserk?)
So, I was wondering, how does the Dark Horse version compare to the fan translation. I talked with the editor at a con, and he said for all the new Dark Horse manga they'd somehow translate effcts by either footnotes on the page or in the back of the book. Sadly, none of them have any though. Other than that, I'm rather happy with it. Anyone else seen the DH version adn what do you think?
Also, my roomates told me to first watch the anime (which they loaned me and I finished on Christmas Eve, heh) before readin the manga. Anyone think that was a good idea? It seems to be working well.
-Xenos
Not a bad idea to watch the anime first, because if you read the manga first, you would be pissed at the job they did with anime. Now i do love the anime but it pales in comparison to the manga in many different ways. Since the anime leaves off half-assed and it decides to leave out major key players to the storyline, it is best to read the manga and get filled in on what really happened. So yeah watching the anime and then reading the manga is the way to go.
Man, 26 rocked da house.
The skull armor was so fu**ing cool. And Gatts slashing those trolls...

***spoilers***
ok,so maybe i am a bit jaded but i am not sure why this is continually called a "rape" scene.caska never says no,she never says stop, etc.before this episode she seems to have been going through a turmoil about her feelings between gatts and griffith .and during the so called "rape" scene around volume 13 chapter she is clearly having her arms around the former griffith and kissing him back after telling gatts to "not watch"(chapter 7 i think)(she does kiss him back...look again page 150ish her tongue is still out as griifith pulls away from her)
i realise before he newborn griffith appears to her she has no choice in the matter and really doesnt after he appears but she doesnt exactly struggle or object till she looks back and notices gatts watching the scene.
so my question is ....is this really a "rape" scene or a painful experience to hurt gatts? i feels its clearly a slap in gatts" face .....and not as much a rape scene as thought when i first read it.....
opinions ??
It's a scene that haunts me everytime i think about Berserk. In my honest opinion, she gave up and was letting Griffith have his way with her. However she didn't know that Gatsu was still alive til she saw him there watching in disbelief and that is why she told him not to watch because she couldn't stop it. Don't forget she was in love with both Gatsu and Griffith and her thinking that Gatsu was probally dead too, she just "gave" herself to Griffith. It's so painful, i need to read more of the manga though before i make my conclusions as to Caska's mindset. My two cents.
One thing really irritates the hell out of me though, i think the author tried to make that scene too sensual and thus the Caska kissing and taking the rape thing. In most hentai, once rape happens 9 times out of 10 the rapee just goes with it and to a degree almost enjoys it or does enjoy it. But this wasn't an hentai and completely pisses me off.
they really changed the story in the anime. in the first episode some people said, that griffith had become king, but in the manga he is something very different from a king.
and I heard the their are berserk mangas in englishi was wondering if thats trueand where can i buy them
thanks
volume 1 has been released by darkhorse, should be able to buy at any major bookstore, and possibly at some comic shops.

Don't mind my 2 cents... but
I simply must disagree about the rape seen not being 'a rape seen.'
Simply, Caska was too exausted, mentally and physically especially after Judo went down and the monsters started fondeling her. The monsters seemed to have their way(not penetration exactly) with her for quite some time.
I'm sure Caska was dipping into despair and Fempto was just the clincher. It was rape!
Monster apendages held her arms and tore at her skin, while she was powerless against a godlike being having his way with her, and I'm guessing it was all directed towards Guts.
Later, she simply had no power left, except to tell Guts not to watch. After Femto was done, she fell to the floor and passed out. It was rape.
The other affect comes later when she's revealed to be insane.

Hello, new guy here.
Anyways, the Berserk MANGA is currently my fave anime/manga out there.
Darkhorse has only licenced the first 3 volumes, but good news, the first order sold out. So expect to see more.
As to the quality of translation/censorship etc etc, I think it was a perfect adaptation. Well at least the copy I have seems like it.
The chapters come out in Young Animal magazine before the volume, and currently there are 232 chapters-some great stuff.
To adress a few things SPOILER WARNING!!!!
The Berserk armor which Guts has: literally turns the person into their inner demon and the shape of the helmet reflects it-that's why the helmet morphed into that shape that looked like Guts' demon(in later chapter it shows that it even bites!)
Also, the helmet used to have the shape of a skull, so it's likely that Skull Knight was the previous user... before he became the skull knight.
Concerning Skull knights new Blade of Resonance made from behilits. It's because Void was able to fend him off with a dimentional rift that he probably came up with the idea. The blade is able to 'resonate' through all the dimensions/reality/astral plains which could then inturn hurt the Godhand's true form, through the properties of the behilits.
Guts' own sword seem to developing much like it due to him killing all sorts of things from all plains.
Chap 26 really jolted the storyline, I can't wait to see more.
I also look forward to reading berserk well into my 30's and middle ages (I'm currently 20) :)

Damned New armor? naaahhh......Its just a catalyst. It raises Gatts pain tolerance and endurance and has a bit of a steroid like effect. But it'll break with continuous use or right amount of pressure.
And if he uses it always, i guess Gatts will definitely be damned and become like Skull Knight.

look over chapter 13 again.
she sure does kiss demon boy alot and toward the end of the so called rape she is no longer being restrained and is embracing femto just before he throws her to the floor .
I just did, she never embraces him, the first long moments her arms are being constrained by a monster's tentacle like arms. At the last moments, she never embraces Fempto Either.
Her arms seem to curl up(but never actually touches around him) because Femto's arms made them in that position as his right hand is FORCING her face to kiss him, barring her right arm, and his left hand is fondling her other side, pushing her left arm up.
I tend to over analyze too.
it was definitally rape, because when femto took her she was first unconscious then barely awake (i think she was already insane). She was raped and tortured by several monsters, so i think she was already insane, when famto raped her and what seemed, as if she kissed him or enjoyed the rape could be his demonic "powers", he just gained.
Hi_There
2004-01-12, 16:14
raped her and what seemed, as if she kissed him or enjoyed the rape could be his demonic "powers", he just gained.
But she didn'e enjoy or was willing. The first kiss surprised her(she opened her eyes to see Griffith).
Second kiss was forced by Femto's hand, look at the page before, she's fighting it, but he's too strong.
Remember to read the panels from right to left.
I read it over a couple times, there was no 'willingness(She said 'no, no!') nor, enjoyment. Caska just couldn't get out.
Confusion
2004-01-13, 12:27
i dragged myself through that chapter again and i swear its harder to read each time.
she does indeed say "NO...NO!" at a point.i agree that it is indeed a rape in spite of my earlier post.......BUT....something happens whether its her confusion(gattsu/griffith dillemma) coupled with the onsetting insanity, toward the end she gives in/goes with it.(perhaps this is as Xiandu suggested the writers simply attempting to sensualize the scene ie:hentai)
pages 149/150 shes reciprocating kisses with femto and look at the middle panel in 150 caskas right arm is not being held by femto and SEEMS to be wrapped around femtos neck.(perhaps just a bad perception by me)
in the end ,i think it is indeed a rape.i agree she has no choice and is not willing.but i think in the very end of the rape she ALMOST appears to get into it.this i think may be caused by her onsetting insanity(lets face it who wouldnt go insane?) mixxed with the writers possible attempt to sensualize the scene .
Hi_There
2004-01-13, 20:21
I completely understand where ur interperetation comes from.
However, look at pg 148, bottom left square. Femto is forcing Caska to face him, and his index finger is prying open her mouth for the kiss. Caska seems like she's strugling against it.
Pg 149, Femto's right arm is pushing against her right arm causing it to position upwards. It seems like it's in a curl because her right forearm hangs down(due to all the things she's been through, she's fatigued and tired) but she still never embraces him.
Her left arm is pushed up due to Femto's left hand fondling her and possibly his thumb pushing against her arm pitt.
Pg 150 shows a closeup, but notcice that when he releases her, she has no strength and falls to the floor, this backs up the supposed 'sensual' position she was in, that it was out of her own power, and was not embracing/holding on to him. The position was only due to Femto's own means.
If this point still doesn't fully pursuade you, let's just agree that we disagree.
Gosh, this is all so graphic and I'm still so young *blush*.:heh: There should be a "Mature" warning in the topic or something. Anyway, when I first read that chapter I thought she ended up enjoying it, but I can't prove it. Plus I never liked Caska anyway, so I'd believe anything of her :p. Agree to disagree, certainly.

sorry i dont log in or post much......
ok let me say that we were having a discussion on the character motivations in a VERY dark and horrible scene.i dont think it went too far down into some perverted gutter.if you look at our coversation maybe youll pick up on the conversation being based on character motivation.oh did i repeat CHARACTER MOTIVATION.
did you read the berserk manga? if you did and up to book 13 then you know its a dark and terrible piece that changes everything.alot of people have differing opinions of the mindset of caska in the scene.that is all this was about.
perhaps this isnt the best place to discuss it considering the adult themes.i should have tagged it mature themes and i suppose that was a mistake.but really i think its been a reasonable conversation.it seems to have been more or less settled till you revived it .
by way of closing thanks all who posted on this i was trying to sort out the character motivations, and i achieved that.and maybe changed my opinion......a little :P
now maybe a mod can close this if its too adult.....
Wow first off let me just say that I'm a big fan of the anime, the cliffhanger ending in the anime was just too much for me so about a year and a half later I just now finally snapped and started reading the manga.
This is my first manga ever and I'm enjoying it quite a bit, never thought it could take the place of the anime because of the sterotypical its a black and white book deal. Boy was I wrong! It's great! I'n now on chapter 13 so I will begining new ground shortly. I'm so excited!
Anyways something has been really bothering me and thats how the main charater Gatts or Guts or whatever the hell is name is translated as. I mean I've seen like four different versions of his name throughout the manga and anime, what gives!
So which ones the right one? Ive seen
Guts
Gatts
Gatz
Gutsu
Edit- and I can't believe they left out so the whole Black Dogs part in the anime, that part was huge! Plus all the other battles Guts had. What a jip. But I still love the anime.

In an interview, Kentaro Muira(the creator). Addressed that the proper name is 'GUTS'.
I was also saddened that they didn't have the wild dogs arc in the anime.

I was wondering the same thing as Tommy.
What the hell is Guts name??!?!
I've heard
Guts
Gatts
Gattsu
Ahhhhhhhhhhhh
Didn't the old owner of the Berserk Armor bleed to death according to Schierke (Little Witch)? I want to know more about the Skull Knight's past. I hope there is a special chapter for his story later when he was a king supposably.
I think the former owner couldn't handle the armor aka die from loss of blood. Anyway, since I read that Berserk first vol was sold out. Anyone heard/read anything of DH licensing more vol of berserk?

His name is ( ガッツ ), which would be "Gattsu" when romanized or "Guts" in proper English.

Actually, I still didn't finish the anime of Berserk but I heard that its incomplete and the manga continues the series. So I want to know which manga number is exactly after the last episode of the anime. So I could buy it (the mangas are also licensed right? ) right after I finish the anime.
Thanks
*EDIT*

Read chapters 1-8 (volumes 1-3) because the first episode of the anime leaves out a lot of stuff from the prologue.
After that, I believe that the anime ends in chapter 52, so you will pick up in the middle of volume 10.
Personally I recommend that you read the whole manga since the 7 volumes that are covered by the anime are only a small fraction of the 26 volumes that have been written so far. If you read the manga version of those voumes after you have watched the anime you may learn some more about Berserk including a few interesting (and very important) details which were left out of the anime, like the Skull Knight. Besides, Dark Horse hasn't released volume 7 yet, so you might as well read what they've released while you wait.
I'm now going to close this thread and refer all follow-ups to Berserk (http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?t=1004)
Well the last volume (26) was published in december... Does anyone here know when is the next one coming?
Thanks.

I'm new to Berserk manga and I also have up to 26 but I read somewhere that someone has already volume 28!! :twitch:
Also, this kind of question is not allowed.
The question is "how often" not "when" so I'm allowed to ask :)

well...no offense but re-read your post. You actually said "when" :)
Anyway, I should stop this cuz pointless topics are not allowed but im still searching for the post where that guy talked about volume 28.
this isn't asking about scanslations.... it's asking about the actual manga.... and if i'm right... i think i am, but if i didn't i wouldn't be answering.... the collected version is printed every 6 months, as the non-collected is a monthly.
Mr_Paper
2004-03-06, 01:01
The volumes are printed bi-annually while the chapters are
published bi-monthly...
I highly suspect the person who claimed to have upto volume
twenty-eight was either mis-informed or at the very least had their
volumes incorrectly labeled. I purchase the volumes as they're printed
and at the end of volume twenty-six it states that volume twenty-seven
won't be out until mid summer.
The volume 27 (so the story after the chapter 226) will be released in mid summer but the prepublication went until the chapter 235 already.
Confusion over how many volumes are out of a manga (i.e. as above, 26 are out, but you've "seen" up to 28) almost always stems from scanlators making assumptions about what volume a magazine chapter will appear in. Yes, there are only 26 volumes, but people who scanlate from magazine chapters will label the next 10 or so chapters as coming from "volume 27." In general, I dislike this practice (whether the manga is licensed or not), as it is misleading people into thinking that the manga they're downloading is scanned from a nice book and not a toilet paper magazine, which is sadly not the case.
This is why the two mangas that Mangascreener scanlates from magazine scans, Pluto and Bokurano, are not labeled as being in any volume. When books are actually published, we will rescan and release them "properly."
So, I guess Darkhorse got the complete license of Berserk Manga. Vol.4 will be out in July 14. BTW, where did you guys read about Berserk Vol.1 or 2 sold out??? I check darkhorse news section and only saw Conan and someother one sold out.
I'm waiting impatiently for the hawks to release volume 27.
By the way, I consider that as the story progresses the whole concept of the anime has changed, in the anime it was something very similar to Brave Heart (The Hollywood movie) Big battles, castles, kings and all that sort of stuff. But now the story is going into more fantasy than before, there are more unreal things than before; at least I thought that the anime was very realistic but now we have fairies, ogres, trolls and magic. It is ok, anyways Berserk is still an awesome anime :D

That's part of what's so great about it in my opinion. It isn't limited to just one thing. We did the castles and big battles thing, and that was great, but now we've moved onto something new, and it keeps it fresh.
i've not been able to find the manga full for berserk but the series was great but im looking for the manga since it'll be longer to see how it turns outexcept for the terrible ending

The TV series ends between volumes 12-13, if I remember right. As for what happens after the anime.. a LOT happens, heh. Let's just put it that way. The anime also skips over some cool scenes and characters. If you want to read some summaries of what happens, I recommend checking out SkullKnight.net (http://www.skullknight.net/), as it's one of the most comprehensive Berserk sites I've seen.

Hi ppl, think ive been ripped off!
I bought a DVD box set of Berserk the anime, and I dont think it has all episodes?
It finishes with the reborn demon Griffith, rapeing Cosca, infront of a injured gutz, who is being held down by lots of other demons, then it just finishes, and the outro comes on, then it shows gutz with the old man who makes his sword, and he says to gutz "are you leaving, dont get yourself killed", and then it shows you a close up of Gutz's face, and hes missing an eye, which tells me it must be after all the demon world shit, cause that were he loses the eye in the first place, i mean WTF! I have been totally ripped off haven't I, I wanna know what happened how did he get out of that situation, whats happens to this new Grffith.
Dammit I was realy enjoying this anime untill this point.

I thought he was supposed to be somewhat of a morally gray character in the anime as well.
Sure he did a lot of evil stuff, but he usually had good reasons to do so, especially considering how evil the Berserk universe is.

Jesus! you whine about everything in every single thread that I see you... what's up with that? Volumen 27 was a great volume and Gatsu kicked ass as usuall.
You get to see Demon King going against Griffth. That is one powerful foe for Griffth to handle while Guts getting his crew together. Also, Griffth coming for Charlotte even though he doesn't really need her to take the throne anymore.

The newest volume release appears to be 27, according to Sasuga. From the looks of it, volume 28 should be out later this year (Berserk sees 1 volume release every ~6 months), and it is still being serialized. No clue on how far it is serialized at this time.
Now this very likely was asked already, or at the very least the answer can be found in the Berserk Thread (http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?t=1004). You should probably direct any more questions there.

It still has all the blood, viloence and swearing that the original has. Given that each volume comes wrapped in shrink wrap to prevent people, namely underage people, from reading it I don't think they'll be censoring or editing it.
Which chapter does the anime end ? (So I know where to read from)
Sorry, I don't know the exact place (I haven't see the anime) but it's somewhere around chapter 85 volume 13. Although I do recommend starting reading from the very beginning or at least from chapter 9 (Golden Age arc begans). This way you would enjoy the series more.

Now, I don't think it's against the rules to do this... I just got the first 6 volumes of Berserk in Japanese for Christmas. The child was Caska's and Skull Knight tells, your woman has been bearing it for months. I guess the keyword is months. Unless a new evidence comes up, we have to assume this as correct. But, can the new God Hand's forceful act might be the reason for it's both formation and birth, like his impact might cause the baby to grow and be born earlier (I guess the movie Species comes to my mind in this case)?
Actually if going by that Skull Knight line I wouldn't be so convinced - afterall it's unlikely anyone would know 100% who daddy was originally besides Caska - but anyway I came more to this conclusion in a later volume.
I'm not sure if they line up the same, but in the German-translated Vol. 28:
Caska finds a long haired impish child (which peculiarly looks like a cross between Caska and Guts), and her behaviour is a lot more ''with it'' (in a maternal way - not in a speaking way) Guts however is very conflicted with the child - there is a moment which Miura does that is completely wordless, but done in a very 'family' orientated way (Caska and Guts end up holding the kid ala. parental style) Caska is then extremely hostile to Guts (which could allude back to when Guts acted in a very 'unfatherly' way before - although I'm definitely not going to push on that point) But anyway, this scene is immediately followed by Guts musing with a flashback:
Zum letzten mal hab ich ihn im turm der verdammten gesehen. es war ganz flüchtig, aber ich bin mir sicher. Ob er gerade iregend wo ... alleine durch die nacht irrt?
Which basically has him think of the last time he saw ''it'' (briefly at the Tower of the Condemned (?) ) - and wonders where it is now - all alone in the night etc
In fact the whole volume is done in this sort of way - if it were just a regular monster baby or Griffiths, I doubt Miura would have included such a scene, and Gut's pain would be different. This is sort of inexpressable sadness based on your own loss that has him parallel the two children.
The problem is, no-one says much in 'words', it's all in the art :)
But feel free to disagree, if you interpreted that vol different - I feel convinced enough myself to say it was Gut's based on Vol. 28.
I believe you are talking about the moon child (? or something like that) part. The child was interested in Guts, I guess. I mostly followed those parts through raws plus translation, so I might have missed some parts. I guess, we still don't know the origin of that child. But if it is Caska's child, his interest in Guts is interesting. I can understand him recognizing his mother, but recognizing Guts as his genetical father is not realistic.
Even if the child is Griffith's you can still find a way to make him feel closer to Guts rather than Griffith. Even though it was said the child took the evil side, it might be possible to interpret it as the originally demon child chose the human side - his mother and his mother's lover, etc, and accepted Guts as his father.

Hmmm are you saying this impish moon/sea child is actually Caska's, because I must have missed that heh!? I myself didn't mean to suggest that - only that Caska became maternal towards it (and the appearance it had was quite uncanny I suppose) but not that it was exactly hers.
Well anyway, regardless of who/what that moon child was, that 'thing' Caska gave birth to was refered back to in Vol. 28 - (so I got the impression the two 'children' were different) - and more that the manner in which it was done (in art and behaviour) seems to suggests that Guts himself thinks it was 'originally' his baby.

Are you talking about Moon-Kid or that 'whatever-it-is-Kid'...?
Are you talking about Moon-Kid or that 'whatever-it-is-Kid'...?I was talking about 'whatever-it-is-Kid'.
About the moon child, it can be anything I guess, since just like the way it appeared it disappeared. If Caska's child can revert back to human form when it desires, there is the possibility of both child being the same. But, as far as I know, we cannot say this right now. Also, the way he got close to Casca and Guts suggest some kind of relationship, but who knows, maybe it was related to Griffith.

well in my opinion the kid is probally caska's and guts bcoz she was already pregnant before the eclipse and also from skullnights words , as for the moon child its probally the same kid even skullnight said that it longes for its parents soo its safe to assume its caska's and guts , still the story is still progressing all we could do is speculate untill things are made clear
I always thought that Skull Knight knows things better :D so it was Guts and Caska child who was changed evil, and than in second elipse it was transformed in to Griffith's new body (that might not hold anything for Guts? but he want on himself to save Caska)
I think that Moon Child will be seen again on elf's land (hopefully it isn't destroyed by now) and it might be even the king of elves :D
I can understand him recognizing his mother, but recognizing Guts as his genetical father is not realistic.
And yet I believe that's what the Skull Knight was alluding to when he said that a child would always seek out its parents. I believe that was the author's explanation for why the baby kept appearing before Guts at odd times.

I believe that was the author's explanation for why the baby kept appearing before Guts at odd times. But how did it understand that Guts is his father? If it accepts the first people it saw as its parents that is ok. Otherwise, it should be not possible for that thing to recognize Guts as its father - through its genes. Also, the brand Guts have might be one of the reasons for that thing to appear before him, the other would be Casca and Guts's interest in her (if he followed them, it wouldn't be too difficult to understand that).
I have a question, it is related to one of the above posts. Was the demon that turned into Griffith Casca's baby or some other one?

But how did it understand that Guts is his father?
There is enough evidence of supernatural activity that I wouldn't be surprised if such a child could sense it's parents through some spiritual instinct.

If I remember it correctly, technically, the first person the demon-child saw was Guts. Even so, it still felt a motherly connection with Caska. So, I wouldn't be surprised if it can feel that Guts is the father. Even so, Guts clearly rejects that "demon" as his child.
That's hard to say for now. From what it looked, the baby was one of the essence that formed Griffith Reborn. Griffith even noted something within him. But then again, with the appearence of the "child", we can't really say for sure.
The mystery of where that "child" on the beach came from is one of the main things that keeps me reading Berserk.

Anyways, Farnese is at a ball where it is announced she will wed someone from a different kingdom in order for Guts and co. to pick up a boat since all the boats are being used for war.

Warning: These are some pretty spoilerific questions.
1) Why did Griffith have sex with Princess Charlotte? Unless I'm failing to remember something, he didn't show a drop of interest in sexual activity up until that point.
(He did say something to the effect of "A woman's job is to warm a man," but that didn't really strike me as him saying "If I'm depressed, I'll go bang the nearest willing chick!" He also slept with the pedophile, but that was only for money. And he tossed Guts a sex book once, but if I remember correctly, that was only to show Guts that books come in many varieties.)
2) Why did the King try to rape his own daughter?
(I think I've got a slight clue, but I'm not sure. Something like "To be superior to Griffith, I must do everything he did and more." Or maybe because of Princess Charlotte's similarity to her mother, the King saw his daughter as his wife for a brief moment.)
3) Why does Griffith rape Casca after he transforms into Femto?
(Sorry for all the rape questions, but this is just baffling me.)
4) So far, I've only read up to Volume 11 of the manga. Can someone please explain to me how Guts turned into this?
http://gallery.mindwerks.net/albums/userpics/10001/06v08.jpg
"Just read the manga and find out for yourself!" I'll certainly be doing that soon, but I'd be very grateful if someone could explain to me in a nutshell how Guts transformed into that (an expanded explanation would be even more welcome)

1) Because he was "rejected" by caska.
2) He was a pevert/pedo. He was attracted to his own daughter.
3) Because he still desired caska, plus it would drive gatsu/guts w/e nuts.
4) That I wont spoil, the chapters involving it are pretty great.

Not quite:
1) This had nothing to do with Caska. It was because he was rejected by Guts. Griffith was never interested in Caska.
2) Actually EvaXephon had it right. He raped her because he wanted to obliterate all traces of Griffith. By raping her, he was actually striking at the last man to possess her, metaphorically taking her from Griffith. Unfortunately it was never about Charlotte to either of the men she slept with.
3) Once again, it is actually about Guts. Though in this case, he is doing the same thing that the King did to Princess Charlotte. Isn't it interesting that Griffith and Charlotte's father did the same thing?

Hold on. How did you get those ideas? The author of Berserk stated that he used a lot of sources. He has read many works and tries to understand why they are popular(even he doesn't some of them). The ultimate purpose is to intrigue.
During the original concept, he wanted to show a very angry man. Griffith was not in the author's mind. He finally incorporate him as the antaognist, and Caska's child was not significant at the beggining. Even the author revised the planned ending, it will still be the unhappy one.
By the way, Gatz is called Black Hawk in Dreamcast verssion of Berserk(Eagle may be the better translation). It is opposed to the White Hawk(Griffith). Not only their names, their armors are strikingly similar. It was probably the tribute to the author's old friends. They used to call themselves Band of Hawks.
I managed to catch up to the latest translated chapter... I do wish the author would cut down a bit on the detailed fighting and go a wee bit faster with the rest of the story. Although Schielke's assistance to Guts is kind of different this time, a bit...
I wonder if Schielke and Guts will really end up having a similar trusted-friendship type of relationship that Flora and the Skull Knight had. Either way I'm really impressed by Schielke, she's evidently very gifted and has been trained well to stay calm...
This is also really old but I have a question regarding something that happened during that chapter with the Holy Knights and the pagans.
There was that strange walking Behelit that Luca (the leader of hte prostitutes) managed to 'talk' to for a while, and the Behelit said its first memories were in a garbage dump and so on... it kind of confuses me.
So this walking Behelit used to be some sort of wretched creature - could it have been an "Inquisitor"? It said "If I were like the rest of the Inquisitors and met that priest" - and there is a panel showing those things which couldn't be exposed to light, bowing in front of that flat-faced priest.
And it was living in an extraordinarily wretched condition from a very, very long time ago - until "angels" came and made it become a walking Behelit? Is he talking about the God Hands? He mentions "During the past events, I was a part of it, but I was only giving power to those in need" which is something like what normal Behelits do, right? If your feeling is strong enough and you hold a Behelit you can call the God Hands down to you...
The Skull Knight also says "He still has that kind of power"... after it leaves.
Has it been around before the God Hands and actually, well, 'produced' mini-Behelits that Apostles take?
It even has a sacrifice brand on its tongue? What's the meaning of that?
Then later it eats up that strange fetus thing. Does it actually get absorbed into Femto as he is reborn? Because Femto can feel the 'heartbeat' of that child later in what should have been cold blood.

He was just commenting about how different his life would turn out if he had met Mozgus first. The "Inqusistors" are actually social outcasts recruited by Mozgus to carry out his twisted versions of cleansings.
And it was living in an extraordinarily wretched condition from a very, very long time ago - until "angels" came and made it become a walking Behelit? Is he talking about the God Hands?
Yes. He somehow managed to dig out a Behilit. And if you read further, his wish in life was to "Give birth to a new world". The God Hands give him what he want.
He mentions "During the past events, I was a part of it, but I was only giving power to those in need" which is something like what normal Behelits do, right? If your feeling is strong enough and you hold a Behelit you can call the God Hands down to you...

Sound's like a bad translation to me. Remember, the Beherit Apostle's a twisted guy to start out who's turned mad by the state Mid Land's in and he wanted to change things. Skull Knight's comment is foreshadowing what will happen.....
It even has a sacrifice brand on its tongue? What's the meaning of that?
Remember that the Apostle sacrifice some major stuffs in thier life to get what they want. Well, the Beherit Apostle's sacrifieced everything he has, including himself, so as to "Give birth to a new world."
Then later it eats up that strange fetus thing. Does it actually get absorbed into Femto as he is reborn? Because Femto can feel the 'heartbeat' of that child later in what should have been cold blood.
Femto need a physical body in order to get reincarnated. The demon child's prefect for that.
OK, thank you very much for the answers. It could very well be a borky translation, I don't know what the original is. It's phrased weirdly to begin with...
But pardon my stupidity; I don't entirely get how the Behelit Apostle got what he wanted - what does he mean by "create a new world" and "change things"? Actually, what the hell does that Behelit Apostle do precisely? (Perhaps that's something we're supposed to guess) Did he ask for the power to act like a Behelit - in that he walks around and gives power to people (and coincidentially looks like a Behelit too)?
And here I was thinking Femto would not be created out of just that one body (foetus), but since he is... while he's managed to manipulate it so it looks like himself (or at least, that is what I think), some traces are left behind. Interesting...
...

He did wish to "create a new world", and who's better to do that then Femto? By giving Femto a body, he gave him the means to carry out his old desire: The change the world order. I'm guessing Femto's ambition only grew while he was "away", so "creating a new world" is just about what he wants to do. That's my guess.
Behelit Apostle asked to make give him power to "create new word" but the God Hands were the one to choose what world this would be...

No from what I see. Miura is only 39 years old and Guts is still a mortal despite having the Berserker Armour and control over it. He needs some major, explainable and non-clinch, non-chessy powerup to kill the Godhands. Miura can spent another 20 years drawing Berserk for all I care.

Hmm... This topic has too many pages and it's late so I'm too tired to read them all so if this question was already asked and answered, please point me out to the page number. If not, someone please respond truthfully to their best ability. What happens to Caska and Gutz after they are rescued? I know she goes after her child for some reason and Gutz is forced to go after her. I just finished the series and I must know what happens until I buy the manga later on.

Oh dear. Some questions should not be answered.
If I gave you a short and simple answer it would frustrate you instead of satify. In order to actually answer your question to any degree of satisfaction I'd have to explain about 15 volumes of manga.
Let's just say that after Caska and Gutz excape from the Eclipse, they do their best to survive the demons that home in on their brands. If that isn't good enough answer , then you really should read the manga.

I guess it was inevitable. Every damn good anime that I watch is usually left unanswered forcing me to consider reading the manga. Seems that this time I have to.

...and that's how all anime fans become manga fans eventually.

That's what happend to me. Saw Berserk the anime which got me into anime, then I wanted to find out what happend later and picked up the manga... now there is no turning back.
I guess it was inevitable. Every damn good anime that I watch is usually left unanswered forcing me to consider reading the manga. Seems that this time I have to.There is hardly anything that can be done about Berserk. The story after the point the anime ends is a completely dark monsterous story; it is mostly about a neverending battle between a human-monster and real-monsters. Anyways, the story and drawing won't let you down.
sheesh, guts is no monster, he is just a extreeemly strong, violent and skillful individual with a iron will to survive. He is the real deal though, full on human. He tries to take care of the woman he loves and is working hard to find a safe place for her. He finds new friends and companions that help him through his journeys.
God, that almost sounded normal :heh:
Too bad he attracts trouble like a squealing, bleeding pig in a water tank full of starved sharks :D That sacrificial mark really is a trouble magnet. Throw in some S&M armor and a loli with a crush on him and you got yourself a PARRTEEE!!!
Awesome artwork and a story that keeps you reading chapter after chapter.

Even if he was living on the border of human and monster at the beginning with that dragon slayer blade and a highly inhuman attitude towards most of the creatures, with the new armor he has, he can be considered as being transformed into a real one. But, still thanks to the little witch Schierke, he can still be domesticated or, maybe the right choice of word would be, humanized, but as much as Zodd (alright, that's a bit harsh, but, he is walking along a similar path).

Lol, don't tell him that. Just a few chapters ago he was very upset about being compared to a monster :D
Zodd, eh... To me the relationship between Schielke and Guts is very obviously mirroring the one between Schielke's teacher and the Skull Knight... Despite me being impatient for stuff to actually happen rather than the seemingly neverending fights, I enjoy seeing Schielke helping Guts out... I like her precocious nature. It's also very touching to see a near-monster like Guts still has the sanity and goodwill in him to cooperate with, and more importantly, trust her.

There is a lot of mirroring going on in Berserk, the most glaring example being the relationship between Gutts/Griffith and Skull Knight/Void.
As for the current story. Well, the manga has been going on for almost two decades. When you are reading it in one sitting, it's lightning fast, but to wait a month at a time may seem very slow.
It's not something special to the current arc, that's how it always was. I am pretty sure that The Chapter of Falconia is coming to an end (with Kushan forces being repelled from Vritannis), so hopefully the story will move on.

Sounds like it will tire anyone that starts reading the manga now to catch up with the current events. One sitting may not be possible from the looks of these replies.

Well, chapter 278 was pretty interesting. The fight is over but Gutts almost gets his ass eaten by Zodd and the apostles when he mentions Griffith. They do finally manage to leave for the ship, though and I am hopying that they are finally going to Elfheim.
