Like Chiibi said this on 'Anime you love but everyone else hates? XD' thread,
"Pretty much the opposite of the other thread. No, I don't mean underrated. We already have a thread like that. I mean shows that you liked and you see a LOT of negativity about them. Online reviews, a majority of opinions you see on forums, what your friends say, etc. This is your chance to defend them.
If you're brave enough."
I'm gonna try that to see what movies that you like but everyone else seems to be hated about it like my top movies below inspired by 'Doug's (Nostalgia Critic from TGWTG.com) TOP 10 movies that I like but everyone else hates':
- Mr Bean's Holiday
- Final Destination series (1 - 3)
- Resident Evil: Afterlife
- Speed Racer
- Terminator Salvation
- TRON Legacy
- The Matrix Reloaded & Revolution
- Blade Trinity
- War of the Worlds (2005)
- The Longest Yard (2005)
- The Island (2005)
- The Day After Tomorrow
- X-Men: The Last Stand
- 2012
- Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
Like I said, everyone else had their own opinions & it shouldn't meant to be taken seriously. And I've should be ashamed of what I've been done recently. Taking people opinions way too seriously.
in no particular order:
-terminator salvation
-war of the worlds
-star wars prequels
-kick ass
Yeah I actually liked Terminator Salvation. It was a great film!

Yeah, me too. I would also add Battle: Los Angeles to the list. I like it simply because of its effect. I accept the movie has some negative points which as people says made it quite a shallow movie. But as long as we enjoy it, who cares?

- Michael Bay's The Island
I actually liked that movie as well, and I also liked "Jumper" for similar reasons. Don't get why it wasn't well received.

Speed Racer - like many critics, I disliked this film on its arrival/crash. But seeing it for a second time on IMAX really started the change of my opinion. First of all, the film is gorgeous. Absolutely beautiful. Secondly, this is probably the best anime-to-live-action out there. Not simply because of the visual effects (though that helps), but due to the simple fact that the creators have an honest appreciation for both the form and substance of anime (and the original Speed Racer). And thirdly, while the characters and acting initially seem simplistic and silly, on further viewings it becomes clear that this simplicity was aimed for, and the actors play their parts quite well.
This is really one of the few films that my opinion has taken a complete 180 on over the last few years.
That being said, there are always guilty pleasure films like 2012, Blade Trinity (with Ryan Reynolds and Jessica Biel being so hot, how could I not like this film :)), the Spongebob movie, etc...

Can I speak within the vacuum of a franchise? I've heard that Godzilla VS Gigan is either one of the best Godzilla films ever or the worst flick since Godzilla's Revenge, and I'm inclined to go with the former. I dunno how well this series stacks up against general opinion though.
the Spongebob movie, etc...

@ Terminator Salvation
Awesome movie, I don't recall anyone not liking it, then again, I don't read movie critics.
@ Jumper
Great movie too. Love the concept of a "jumper" ability. Makes me think of something Marvel like (imagine if Marvel made a movie like that). I think people didn't like it because of the main actor, Anakin lolz.............................................. .................................................. ........
Not the best actor for the film. Also, IMO, I think adding his girly friend to make it more of a chick flick killed it too.
@ Avatar, the Last Airbender
It WOULD have been an epic movie IF it didn't have SUCH HORRIBLE ACTORS! My god, I've seen lots and lots of movies, but there aren't too many that I've seen where I disliked it a lot due to actors, and this is one of them lolz. The plot was done decently, a little too fast, but almost all the actors are horrible...if they are making more sequels to it, I won't be looking forward to it.

Megamind, which I love in spite of my hatred of Will Ferrell, Tina Fey and Jonah Hill. It was funny! It was cool! They planted important things early in a way that wasn't painfully obvious! Not to mention, Megamind himself is pretty dang cool. But everyone I've shown it to was utterly unimpressed.
I like any Fred Astaire and Marx Brother Movies
The poor Marx Brothers. I love them, but nobody else seems to like Groucho. Or Chico, for that matter. My little brother thinks Harpo is a scream, though.
i liked the texas chainsaw massacre remake :p

There seems to be a misunderstanding of the purpose of this thread. The Marx Bros. and many Fred Astaire films are massively critically/culturally/socially/etc acclaimed. And, Megamind, Ghost Dog, Last Starfighter, and several others listed are all well regarded films. So, please do not include films that a friend may dislike, because that is not the purpose of this thread. Rather, liking films such as Avatar: the Last Airbender and wishing to express that regard is the purpose of this thread.
House of 1000 corpses! Everyone hated that, but I loved it. The sequel was a bit more acclaimed, I think.

The title doesn't say "movies that you like but were hated by CRITICS..."
There are plenty of great movies that critics hated but most people loved, and there are loads of critically acclaimed films that everyone I know loathes... so the point of this thread is what now?
If it's about poorly rated movies then the title of the thread should be changed to reflect that.

Who knew critics didn't constitute a part of "everybody"?...
The guidelines for the thread were "you see a LOT of negativity... Online reviews, a majority of opinions you see on forums, what your friends say [etc]...". If you can find a film that is sufficiently derided by "everybody" (i.e. bad scores on rottentomatoes and imdb, obvious negative backlash against the film, etc), but you like it, then please contribute to the discussion by posting your comments ("defense") of the film. Seems simple enough, right?
(Now, of course, there is a bit of a divide when it comes to how these films are viewed in foreign countries. For instance, I have no idea how [I]Speed Racer was viewed in Japan (did the critics/audiences like the film? or hate it?). Consequently, there will always be a bit of a misunderstanding when discussing how these films are viewed considering that one country may have a stronger positive reaction to a film whereas another country may have a negative reaction.)
To use your contribution as an example, Last Starfighter has 74% (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/last_starfighter/) on Rottentomatoes, a 6.4/10 on imdb (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087597/), was a minor box-office success (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=laststarfighter.htm), etc. Hell, there is even a sequel in the works (ala Tron: Legacy). Consequently, it can't really be said that Last Starfighter is a film that "everybody hates"...

Well for example, Last Action Hero was literally "Bob-omb" at the box-office. Some people (critics) didn't like it (Rotten Tomatoes: 38%), but some are do because of cliches.
Last Action Hero is awesome ! It's my favorite Arnold movie after Terminator 1 and 2.
Over here, it has also a bad reputation, but most of those who actually watched the movie liked it. (at least, from my personal experience)
Prince of Thieves (the Kevin Costner Robin Hood movie) is not highly rated (can't call it "hated" though) either, but it has been a favorite of mine ever since it came out. And and as bad as Kevin Costner is, I like his Robin Hood better than Russell Crowe's who is very dull. Michael Kamen's soundtrack was so good it's the first record I ever bought with my own money. (and no, it wasn't because of the cheesy Bryan Adams song)
Oh, and when I was discovering Heroic Fantasy, I caught the beastmaster 2 on TV and loved it. (hey I was 11 years old).
I never dared rewatch it though. (rated 3.3 on imdb and 17% on Rotten Tomatoes)

I didn't know my reference pool had to be so large. In that case, I'd like to say that I enjoyed the remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still. It was the best role I've seen Keanu Reeves in since The Matrix. Plus, Kyle Chandler is a cool guy. It has a 21% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Postman, which I remember seeing and hating, and then watching later and then actually liking it somewhat more... it grew on me a bit. I still like it on the "so bad it's good" basis, but it's better than Waterworld, anyway. :)

There was a lot of general hate directed at it for the massively unsubtle Green Aesop dropped on your head like a ton of bricks.
The original was an anti-war film, and the remake is an anti... carbon dioxide film. Don't drive that SUV or aliens will come and wipe out your entire planet!
So yeah a lot of people were kind of RAEG-ing as a result.

Flash Gordon. A Campy Sci-Fi film that failed in the US box office but was a major hit in the UK where it's still considered a classic there.
Famous British actors like Timothy Dalton and BRIAN BLESSED? Check. Good Campy Feel? Check? Music by Queen? Check indeed!

The Ninth Gate
Rotten tomatoes gives it a 41% (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/ninth_gate/), but I totally disagree.
The movie was akin to an H.P. Lovecraft story and thus was very appealing to me.
Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/spacehunter_adventures_in_the_forbidden_zone/)(1983)
I actually like this movie along with Battle Beyond the Stars (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/battle_beyond_the_stars/).
Both are Roger Cormin grade B-flicks, but I enjoyed them for their total cheesyness and over-the-top bad acting.
It's a MST3000 thing.
UHF maybe. Funny film, I guess it didn't do well becaus it was released the summer the first Batman movie came out.
I can second Battle Beyond the Stars. Lots of decent actors in that...older actors, but still. Also art direction by James Cameron and music by James Horner helped.
Flash Gordan (1980) was a favorate growing up.
Spaced Invaders is another silly film.

After a really long time trying to come up with one, I finally did! I'm the type to watch better-rated movies unless absolutely necessary.... But anyways. Equilibrium (2002). It's rated 37% on RT and is accused of being a Matrix rip-off, but it was awesomely entertaining and I loved the fight scenes :heh: and it's Christian Bale...
But I mean, come on. A movie full of this sort of stuff can't help but be endlessly rewatchable :heh:

People sometimes don't realize that movies are meant to be watched for certain reasons; everything else that sucks but isn't the main focus doesn't matter. You watch Transformers for giant robot fighting action, not to judge its acting or plot. :heh:
Actual my only problem with Transformers was that the focus was too close to the robots so I couldn't see the fighting action.

^ I liked Transformers I a lot, but found no. II really utterly dull. Giant fighting robots shouldn't be boring, but now that I think about it the fighting was missing for a lot of the time, wasn't it? I just recall the main characters fleeing from the bad robots in the desert for, I dunno, half an hour?
And it had really unnecessary... weird moments. :uhoh:
Railgun, giant robot on a wheel, The Fallen. I dunno about you, but that's enough action for me to be satisfied. :heh:

Equilibrium! I didn't know critics didn't like it D= I can see why they would think it's a Matrix rip-off but there's more elements similar to 1984 and was certainly more realistic compared to the Matrix, tho the intended message was the same. If that is so, then they should criticize many other movies like V for Vendetta (73% on RT) because there are quite a lot that deal with the same theme.

Ah yes, if theres one thing about the Transformers films is they were terribly edited, some of the wrost I've seen yet I still loved the films depsite their many flaws.
Big robot fights were great, just wish it was all put together better.
Another vote for Equilibrium, loved the action scenes and yea big fan of The Bale!

And... James Cameron's Avatar, this is strange but at the web everyone seems to hate James Cameron's Avatar, I really liked it tough.
How to rob a bank: this was one of the few robbery movies that was actually funny and interesting at the same time, but for some reason it got 17~26/100...didn't find any reviews though.

This thread makes me so angry. I knew I shouldn't have come in here, as my snobbish film attitude kicks into full gear.
Seeing people cite Terminator Salvation or Transformers as a movie they like makes me want to cringe. First off, I'd take T3 over T4 any day of the week, its ending alone was better than any scene in Salvation. And as for Transformers, Michael Bay has never made a single watchable movie, ever.

I think the CG is TFs is very good and some of the fights are cool .. also, I like the designs (yes, even the insectish Megs) and the alt forms (thank god no giant gun .. that would've looked stupider in live action then human-Galactus)
also, Megan Fox ain't half bad to look at
everything else though ...
oh yeah, sector 7 agent whatshisface (Simmons ?) is funny

What? T4 didn't do anything visually spectacular... especially nothing revolutionary to the extent of T2. The funny thing is, T3 had about $50 million less in budget, but looked far more expensive than T4. Honestly, for a movie that exceeded a $200 million budget, T4's sets look like they came out of LOST... that's pathetic. Trust me, you're speaking to a VFX wiz, who got a big chuckle out of T4's CG aspect from start to finish. That movie may be the cheapest looking $200 mill movie of all time.

Special effects weren't that bad at all. Nothing special of course, but it was a post-apocalyptic world...Judgement Day came and went - they were in the early days of the war against the Machines - so they looked alot less sophistcated compared to the T-800 that Arnie was, or the T-1000.
Terminator Salvation was pretty good all round imo. The 1 thing that killed T3 for me was Nick Stahl as John Connor, and some of the lame 1 liners Arnie used. Otherwise it was decent all round, but didn't feel like Terminator to me.
For me.
Armegeddon -Its one of my favourite movies. Yes it had some glaring inaccuracies, but it was enjoyable to watch if you ignore all the bad things. Its entertaining and action packed, and has its funny moments.

YAY a fellow Armageddon fan!
Don't know why I love it so much but I do.
One thing that I do love for any good action flick is some well placed music and this good music that was well placed.
Which brings me onto anotehr Willis flick, The Fifth Element altho i don't think it's hated that much and could be considered abit of a clut classic but either way one film I love.

1.) You're confusing special effects with visual effects. The actual special effects were done by Stan Winston Studios right before he unfortunately passed away, but those practical effects are so far and few between, that it's hard to have an actual appreciation for em'. Now, as for the VFX... they weren't terrible, but they were nothing special either. They didn't do anything that T3 didn't previously do 6 years prior, with less of a budget no lkess.
2.) I'd take Nick Stahl's emotionally erratic performance over Christian Bale's one-note performance where all he did was scream at the top of his lungs in almost every other scene.
I think Terminator Salvation was great, Terminator 3 was something I just hated, both visually and in script.
@Tetra Vaal: As the title says; movies we like but everybody else hates, the fact of you coming here complaining of movies we like that you don't seems a bit off in this thread, don't you think?
1.) I realize it's the "in thing" to do to hate T3, but how anyone can LOGICALLY hate T3 while praising T4 is beyond me, considering how inept McG's directing skills are. The VFX were better in T3, the performances were better in T3, the action was better in T3 (especially the last 25 minutes), and the ending was ballsier than most blockbuster movies in T3. If T4 did anything right, it's that it finally showcased that McG should not be given $200 million budgets.
2.) I don't really have a problem with people enjoying movies that others hate... I'm just telling it like it is when it comes to the technical categories of both T3 and T4. Where my OPINION comes into play is in my above statements... I'm just flabbergasted as to how anyone could prefer T4 to T3... I guess I'll just say to each their own.

Predator 2
From what I get from many movie-forums, everybody seems to hate it. I don't get it at all. It's a decent if not cool sequel. Some of them said it sucks coz no Arnie. While I cant argue that the movie will be better with Arnie, Predator 2 is already good as what it is.
Batman Forever
It's comical and colorful, yes. Still, the Bruce Wayne/Batman in this movie is decent. Also, the introduction of Dick/Robin is ok, the action is good, the Batmobile, Batwing & Batboat are cool and Jim Carrey as The Riddler is fun to watch. More importantly: no Bat-credit card and Bat-nipples.

The Bat Credit Card... Oh geez, I just couldn't accept that. I believe the above reaction is the best way I could express my reaction to it.
I agree with Predator II, I remember finding it interesting that it took place in the city. There are far worse sequels with far less plot than this. I found it interesting as well as it offered a bit of a glimpse into the Yajuta race. The ending started a whole lot of buzz as well. So I hardly feel it is a failure, and I too place this as a movie I like that everyone else dislikes.

Some of the die-hard FF7 game fans consider that Advent Children is messing with the whole story. Including the out of nowhere Kadaj and co. and the forced reappearance of Sephiroth. To them, the whole movie is a big BS.
Oh yeah, to add to the list of the movies I like, it's Paul W. S. Anderson's Soldier with Kurt Russel as the main character. To me, that movie is just an enjoyable popcorn flick. The movie never pretends to be more than what it is, unlike some certain movies about sparkling vamps :D.

LORD OF THE RINGS- focusing on then battle tactics. In my opinion, the reason why they (the protagonists ) are winning relies only on sure LUCK. It lack strategy. As you can see, their enemies are winning every battle because uses their head rather than noble actions.
And another thing on the 3 part. The events when the heroes are winning then losing then winning then losing.... pissed me off!
Tolkien usually glossed over much of the battles. For a World Wor One vet, he sort of didn't care how the day was won, just that it was.

Apart from Stealth... I think about FNF: Tokyo Drift. I like it because it's the most amusing Japanese portion of the Fast and the Furious franchise, what with the hero having to deal with a completely alien culture... and a new way of racing.
[cut]
Chronicles of Riddick (2004). I'm pretty sure I'm the only person in the world that actually liked that movie and thought that it was a great sequel to Pitch Black (2000).
Oh you are not. It expanded on the Riddickverse which was welcome to me.I could not reasonably expect Riddick repeating Pitch Black with another alien species on another planet. I wish Twohy gets back to the story of Riddick and expand on his universe, the glimpse we have had in the Chronicles.

a alien culture indeed, since they couldn't even get real Japanese people for the roles :heh:
Movies I like the others seem to dislike, I'd shuffle the Michael Bay Transformers in there. I didn't go to see a deep plot, I expected the movie to be a big advertisement, which should come to no ones surprise being that it is Transformers...though I wish Bay would have side stepped his normal filming methods...

I absolutely loathed Terminator 3. I thought Salvation was decent, but I didn't like Christian Bale as John Connor. Somehow, he just didn't seem natural in that role. I actually think Sam Worthington (who played the "terminator") would have made a better John Conner, strangely enough.
The main reason I hate it T3 was not because of the acting, the special effects, or even the general plot and script; it's because of the theme. T1 and T2 both had the wonderful theme of "fight fate and win", whereas T3 had the distinct theme of "there's nothing you can do about anything, so just give up 'cause you're fucked anyway." I hated that T3 completely went against what the other two movies had tried to accomplish thematically. That's why I'll always hate T3. While I did like the new female terminator (the idea anyway; a female terminator is in reality much more dangerous but on screen she isn't as visually intimidating as a man), all in all the movie's depressing overtones overwhelmed anything good about it.
T4 tried to bring back some of that original feeling so, even if the plot's connection with the universe is somewhat tenuous, I commend that movie for at least trying.

Good News, the movie has been in pre-production for awhile now (years in fact), but just recently (http://www.moviehole.net/201143902-exclusive-riddick-begins-casting-character-descriptions) a casting call was put out for the upcoming film (currently named 'The Chronicles of Riddick: Dead Man Stalking'), and while the film was partially shut-down in September, it was confirmed as back up and running just days ago. Vin Diesel will reprise his role, as will Karl Urban, and the film is expected to carry a R rating.

Constantine is a cool movie to me. Still, a lot of people (especially in movie forums) really hate it. I wonder why? The story is unique, the acting is great (yeah Shia LeBouf is totally bearable in this movie, even funny), the action and SFX are decent and the characters are way cool. My absolute favorite scene of the movie is when Constantine were about to go to heaven while giving Lucifer 'the finger' :heh:. It can't be more epic than that! :D
PS: I don't really know the comic source material though. Maybe that's why I can enjoy this movie to the fullest. :)

Two films come to mind, which have been mentioned previously-
One, Waterworld. Say what you want about box office sales or ever Kevin Costner, but I highly enjoyed this film.
Second, Prince of Persia- granted, I saw the movie before I ever played the game, but the movie was excellent IMO (hell, my girlfriend at the time even admitted that she thought she was going to hate the movie, but ended up enjoying it)

I don't know if this was mentioned before or not, but I like Doom (the 2005 movie). People hated it for various reasons, like not being about hell like the games are (and etc.). I personally loved it, even if demons are replaced by mutants. I "made up" for that by hatin' the boring third game (2004) that a lot of people seem to like for reasons I can't understand.
