View Full Version : What is "music" to you?
What is "music" to you?
Is it a story with background beats(most often heard in Country music)?
Is it a bunch of punk rockers being rebelous and saying a million curse words?
Is it the melody alone that makes you feel good?
There are many more I can think of, but I really don't feel like typing for half an hour. Just post in how you feel, alright?
Here is my view on music that I like. Music has to have a strong beat and great melody that can get me amped. By amped I mean that I feel my aura tingling and the feeling that I could lift a 500LB rock with one arm(my very soul is being amplified). 95% of music I hear sucks. I notice that alot of new rock bands COPY the same guitar and drum beats from old rock bands. I don't like "singers" in general. There are some exceptions, but sometimes I listen to a song and I start to get amped, but some retard starts trying to sing and ruins the whole song.
When I go to a few of my friends houses I listen to what they're playing (bands like Link'in Park), and as I listen I can always point out errors that screw the songs up or know they copied a guitar/drum beat.
As for anime music(Yes, I have to mention this because I realize that i'm offtopic. If need be, move this to general chat plz). It's alright(in general). Alot of anime fight BGM get me amped. As for the japanese music itself, I like alot of the insturmental playing, but since I don't speak japanese it kinda screws it up for me. ^_^'
Your turn...
For me, art is the tender balance between chaos and order. Thus, music is the aural analogue of that. I like to have a nice structure in music, so things like measures, some repetitions make the music sound well. However, it's the things that surprise me in music that makes one song stand out above other songs.
Music is to me has to fullfill a couple of demands:
- It has to contain instruments, not a computer!
- It has to be able to perform live.
Most of the pop music these days is made to make money, so it is often enhanced using a computer. I don't call that music.

So basically you don't consider video game music actual music because it doesn't have real instruments? A lot of music these days are performed by computer, because performers are expensive. Why hire performers for hundreds or thousands of dollars when you can buy a synth package that costs only a couple hundred dollars? While major players in the movie industry can afford an orchestra, most of the players with less budgets would have to resort to computerizing an orchestra, which to many people doesn't sound much different, especially if there's a lot more going on in the movie than just the music. As society becomes more technological, we may see continued evolution of music away from traditional instruments to digital instruments that are either played by a person or by a computer.
I do agree that a lot of pop music is pretty crappy. While sometimes the composition is interesting, a lot of times the singer can't sing, so the creator has to "nudge" the pitch into an acceptable range so that the singer sings on pitch.
A performer aint expensive, just when you hire known performers.
And an orchestra? were does it say that when you are trying to make music you need an orchestra?
And when the creator has to "nudge", you cant call it singing either ;)
This is all because of the commercialisation (correct english?)
...As society becomes more technological, we may see continued evolution of music away from traditional instruments to digital instruments that are either played by a person or by a computer. ...
Digital instruments are instruments ;) but performed by a computer... no thats not music.
You have to make music, not just click some buttons on your pc screen.
And when I say that I can't call sometime music, doesn't mean I don't like it :)
A performer aint expensive, just when you hire known performers.

When you have to pay people to record an instrument, you pay them by the hour usually. Plus, you'll need to coordinate studio time and that costs money, unless you own a studio. You'd also need audio engineers to make sure the sound comes out okay during the recording. Basically a lot of labor fees you'd have to pay.
Digital instruments are instruments ;) but performed by a computer... no thats not music.
You have to make music, not just click some buttons on your pc screen.
Are you saying that music should be performance oriented and not composition oriented? Personally, as long as it is performed correctly, I don't find the performance aspect that amazing. What I do find amazing is the way the composer stitches together the musical elements to create a work of art. My take is... who do you consider more of an artist, the guy who designs the ceiling of a cathedral or the painters he hired to paint it? etc.
Hmmm, I don't really mind if people is played with actual insturments or not. Think of it this way: The way you play a horn is blowing and pressing buttons. A computer is the samething, your pressing a button, but the difference is that you don't have to blow and with a computer you can screw with the sounds to achieve a great beat.

Music is rhythm to me. I like music with a beat. I don't mind whether it is synthesized or not. I don't like how most pop artists "enhance" their voices, but I don't mind intentionally synthesized voices [ie Techno].
My prefered genres are Classical, Trance, European, and Alternative.
I don't like country or heavy rock.
For me, music is a reminder or conjurer of emotion. Doesn't matter if it's computer or instuments, doesn't matter what genre, doesn't matter if I can understand the lyrics. If it reminds me of something good, or makes me feel good on it's own, I like it.
I like a lot of the songs I hear in anime because they remind me of the show. The characters, the things that happened, the feelings it gave me. It's not just anime, though. A song on the radio can remind me of something that happened to me and I'll like the song because of it.
It's corny and all that, but that's the way it is. :)

Oh yeah. I also see music as a sign of the times. I discovered this while doing a paper comparing classical and baroque music. Whoever knows music history will probably agree with me. I mean, look at modern music...

for me music preferences (and sexual preferences) are completly random. In general, music is sounds that humans use to entertain. That means that for me, Britney Spears makes music, which of course doesn't mean i like it, actually i hate it.
But as i said its random because musical tastes depend mostly IMO on where and when you were raised, for example in africa the use a different scale ( i think 5 scales while in the west we use 8, i don't remember) so when we hear their music, it sounds horrible and untunned, while they consider our music to be the one which is untunned. The same thing happens with ancient music from other cultures ( China, japan, India). It all comes down to what type of "training" your ear had, i mean, what music you were raised with in your childhood.
:topicoff: The same thing with sexual preferences. If we were born in the middle ages, probably people wouldn't consider jeniffer lopez or Nicole Kidman as beautiful or atractive as they are considered today :topicoff:
sorry for the bad english

I disagree with that. As I grew up I listen to music that was around me. My dad is a hardcore heavy metal rocker, and my mom loves country music. As for my friends, they'd either listen to rap or alternative rock. I always felt left out. At one point I remember telling my mom that I hate music, because the only music I knew of is what I heard from friends and family. Then one day, I found "my" type of music, and music has changed my life ever since.

The exact same thing happened to me!!! :) Here in Colombia you hear vallenato EVERYWHERE!! and i hate it!!! my dad hears lots of salsa and my mom music from the 60's, and as you felt left out, i felt left out too until i found "my" music. But I still believe the enviroment plays a huge role in music taste, whether is for the music you like or the music you dislike. let me quote TronDD
For me, music is a reminder or conjurer of emotion. Doesn't matter if it's computer or instuments, doesn't matter what genre, doesn't matter if I can understand the lyrics. If it reminds me of something good, or makes me feel good on it's own, I like it.
I completly agree with TronDD. when i hear music from the 80's it instantaneously transports me back to my childhood. My point is that the music you hear in your childhood is a huge influence on the music you would like in the future.
If you were born somewhere else with different parents, i think that your tastes in music would be completly different! of course my crazy theory probably cannot be proved right anyway, but i still believe its true.
Godd music to me is hard beats, good bass, nice melody. Often also a good voice, with good text.
(Trance, Techno, Metal - Nightwish, Blank & Jones, Cosmic Gate, In Flames, some Millencolin songs(greener grass etc))
I dont care if its made with the help of a computer(not only) or just by intruments, as long as it sounds good.

Music is my universal language. Even if I can't understand the lyrics (especially non-English music like anime), the emotions can be felt through the melody or through the power of the singer.

Music is a universal language. However, the mood of the song is not always what it seems.
ie I feel sorry for the foreigner who think's Everclear's "Wonderful" is a happy song.

Music is something that strengthens emotions to me. Therefore I like(d) a lot. Good havy rock to blow of some steam, some happy music to make me feel like i'm flying, some sweet music to remember good times. The only thing i hate is when artists screw up a good old song. One of the worst was a dutch project: Madhouse, what they did was that they took a madonna song and added the beat of another artist. That pissed me off.

As most people have said, music IS an emotion. It can conjure, remind, and purge any emotion. I can't say I have a favorite genre, I love vocal trance, ambient, and funk, but I don't have a favorite. I do have favorite song though, Duvet, the opening to Serial Experiments Lain. I don't know exactly what it is about the song, but no matter what mood I'm in, it always makes me feel better. Some of my favorite bands are Coldplay, The Doors, but I love Pink Floyd. So I guess what I'm trying to say is that music is an emotion, language, and most of all, a happy drug.
Karma
music to many of us stands for noise.
but to me music is more off a story, but this story needs no words, but just the sounds of the flute and the strings of numerous instruments vibrating, creating a peaceful and wonderful sound of life.
music is something that we are all born with, it contains our feelings and our thoughts. some contain life storys, and past experiences, music is a history of emotions. a long story which has everybodys emotions.
to me music can calm my killer instinct.
in school my dark and devil like self would rise, whenever something happans, even the slightest, insult can result into someone having their hands nailed to the wall with a pair of sccisors.
but to calm my self i bring my cd player into school, with music that can affect my anger, placing it back into the weak cage, that god gave me.
to me music is a gift that we were given. and this gift can change a person, even a devil like me.

Heh.. i am probably the few people that listen to popular music... i have nothing agianst what other people say but... i dunno i guess i am one of those people that enjoy all types of music. if someone looks at my cd collection, they might think i'm weird or something. everything from classical to Jay-Z to John Mayer to Metallica to Maroon 5. I guess if there is real emotion in a song. Then i'll enjoi it.

To me, music is 'noise' that is meaningful, which is determined by the individual listener. With all the different genres of music now, ranging from classical to jazz to hiphop... and not to mention the segregations within these groups.. (minimalist, twelve-tone, acid jazz, etc etc) What may appeal and make sense to one person, may not for someone else. This makes it hard to draw lines and distinctions about the nature of music.
I think making music is one of the greatest joys one can ever derive in life, especially when you make music with other people. (Being a soloist can be quite lonely, don't you think?) Be it singing together, playing the piano while your friend sings.. Whichever. It touches you deep inside and it's an amazing feeling when you're on the same wavelength together and something in you just goes 'click'. Knowing that your mates feel the same way as you do is somehow, priceless. That's because it's different each time, and the experience can never be perfectly replicated: It's for the moment, and it'll only exist in your memories.
Personally, Baroque and 20th-century music are simply the best (Gimme my Bach, Britten and Berg). For now, fave anime soundtracks are Gilgamesh/Shingetsutan Tsukihime. Pretty progressive.

Music... hmm... music is what I make of it! :P
I've never listened to english music exclusively, so I don't really prefer it compared to my other countries. This is only going with what the 'masses' prefer though. MTV, VH1, BET = SATAN. My music collection spans the globe and genres.
I think I like music allot because I go insane when I don't have any type of sound running in the background. (I'm a master at hiding headphones at school) Its also interesting to see how the same themes are being conveyed. Love, hate, happiness, sadness, pain, lust, humor.... its simply facinating how we're all connected.
And in a bit of weirdness, when I listen to music, the mood of the song effects me. The great singers can pierce my soul, but the good ones normally brush against it. I'm the type that cries hearing a song just from the sheer emotion conveyed regardless of knowing the words or not, and can have my moods lifted by hearing a Morning Musume song. I love hearing music live, it just fills me with a peaceful happiness....
And an artist must sound good live. Its the true test of talent.

We are exactly the same. All I listen to is japanese music. It just makes sense. Since I'm yellow man trapped inside a black man's body I grew up with people that had much differnt tastes than my own.
So envirnment does play a factor somewhat. I can't imagine my life without japanese, video game, techno, and classical music in my life

I love music with emotion, music is meant to move the heart and motivate the mind. That was the initial idea when people began listening to music. As Plato once said " Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything." In 97' I got swept away by X Japan's hide, and I never looked back, what I look for is soul, and poetry of words, and I found that in Jrock and different forms of music outside American music. I still love american music though, like 30 Seconds to Mars, Everclear, Grand Master Flash, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Sublime, and Gin Blossoms (wierd selection, I know. :heh: ) but with the air waves being filled with simplistic "I hate my dad cause I can't go out on Friday night" type songs by bands like Good Charolette (Whom by the way are nearing their 30s, let it go guys) that pretty much just making music towards their demographic, I'm forced to stick to my Jrock, and other global tunes, which is fine with me. :)

Hm...Music, to me, is...well...
Heh...guess it's a harder question than it looks.
Well, to me, music should really move you. If you listen to a song that's supposed to make you think, and you don't, how is it music? If you listen to a very happy song that's supposed to make you feel like you just accomplished the greatest of your goals in life, and you don't feel motivated at all, how is it music?
Really, to me, if a song can reach through the layers of pessimism and angst in everyday life that just drag you through the day, and really move your soul...That's music.
That's music.

Most of the time I listen to aggresive music, be it hardcore punk, straightedge punk, Japanese punk, thrash metal, black metal, heavy metal, and jett rock n roll. I like to bang my head, move my body, jump, kick, whatever the music tells me to do. Then again I enjoy delta blues, indie pop, dream pop, math rap, proto metal, and whatever the hell else. I guess if the music borders on genius, then it will capture my attention, but if it's sacharine nutrasweet crap that you hear on the radio or see on the TV, then it's not worth my time. I can be critical of music.
I like music with soothing melody. The undescribable feelings that I get when I hear them always washes away all my bad moods. Music such as: Aladin's A Whole New World which leaves me in tears for minutes everytime I hear it, or Shimokawa Mikuni's Arekara also good, the soft opening that slowly leads into the high notes (climax..?) as if it was the sounds from heaven... :heh: Pardon me for my bad grammer... Anyways, you get the idea of what music is to me... :D
By the way, don't say I have dirty thoughts or anything, but I seem to like female artists' songs better... (Less of a: "Yell Scream ROAR!" type of music...) @_@
Also, for some reason I like songs in languages that I don't understand... Don't know if anyone of you is like me...

Depending on the person, music is the touch of the soul of music that a person plays. If something you listen to makes you feel something, hate, love, optimism, then there's what that music is. That wounderous feeling that surges throughout one's body.
Good music for me is everything that is very instrumental. It has to be something very melodic. If the music has some kind of rushed sound in it or if there is a "surprising" sound that interrupts the flow of the music then it that music is trash for me.
Hence, my favorite music is:
1: Metal, such as Therion, Nightwish, Iron Maiden, Black Sabath, Rammstain, Lacrimosa, Haggar, Moonspell, Metallica (Only the old songs!) and some others that follow their melodic style. I HATE "noisy" metal that doesn't follow any melodic flow but instead appears to be ramdon in itself, example: Sepultura, Children of the Boom and Canibal corpse.
2. Trance, This type of music is indeed one of the melodic most melodic music out there, of course that there are some bands that fail to make interesting melodies. But once you listen to a good band such as, ATB, Rober Milles, Tomcraft or Alice Deejay, you'll get to see what good trance is all about.
3. Rock, Well in this case any kind of standar rock, such as Cranberries, Nirvana, Pink floid, Sound Garden, Red hot Chili Peppers (The old songs!), The beetles, Three Doors Down, Weezer and many others with that style.
4. Classic music, talking about good music, this is indeed one of the best there is, and it is even better if you have piano and violin together :)
5. Music from Final Fantasy and Saint Seiya, these two types of music are very similar to classic music. They are extremely melodic and deep. They are so good that they have been awarded many times. And I believe that these two are the best anime music out there :)

Geez, as musician I don't know how to make my post small.
Music is like everything to me...whateva...
I like film music very much, Especially anime music.
I really like harmonic instrumental songs. Example : Naruto, FMA.
The singing can screw the music up very much.
You can compare a instrumental song and a singing song the same way you compare a book with a movie.
In the book we get own pictures in our head and uses our fantasy but in movies everything is already decided.
Get my point? instrumental music owns! Especially if it's asian.
IMO, if an anime like naruto or FMA didn't have emotional music.
I would not even bother to watch the series.
Music does so much bigger affect in anime, movies etc then people think.

Hmmm, I don't really mind if people is played with actual insturments or not. Think of it this way: The way you play a horn is blowing and pressing buttons.
You can 'play' a lot of things by blowing them and pressing their buttons.
A computer is the samething, your pressing a button, but the difference is that you don't have to blow and with a computer you can screw with the sounds to achieve a great beat.
Argh. Sound is not equal to beat. Rhythm and melody are two completely different things and the phrase 'a good beat' is meaningless, since so much music is, at its very base, built upon some kind of time signature.
Music, and music culture, are really complex, involved concepts and I don't think we teach our children enough about them or how to appreciate them. For example, a lot of people may enjoy a particular song more because of its message or lyrics, the mindset surrounding it, the enviroment they grew up in, what they or their friends believe, their political views, or just about anything else except for the music itself. Not that there's anything wrong with this at all, but it shows how modern music can be a synthesis of poetry, composition and, who knows, even philosophy or social commentary.
There's a huge amount of variety in what people enjoy in music. I, for example, particularly like structure and melody, meaning repetitive pieces or pieces with fewer dynamics generally do less for me compared to complex or elaborate, delicate compositions, Then again, there's a lot of prog rock music I don't like because it's far too elaborate, busy and overwrought, and a lot of simple, direct folk pieces I do enjoy. Since the time of Beethoven (all right, before then, but I'm thinking of a special case), music has been about imparting your own message, sharing your experiences or expressing what you think and feel. I can get a lot out of a piece of music if the lyrics or message are something that I personally connect with. Sometimes that can change my opinion of a piece, or warm me to something I'd usually not expect to like.
I don't see music as being all about just what the lyrics say, about enjoying something because it's popular, about
musical tastes depend mostly IMO on where and when you were raised, for example in africa the use a different scale (i think 5 scales while in the west we use 8, i don't remember) so when we hear their music, it sounds horrible and untunned, while they consider our music to be the one which is untunned.
This is a good point, and I think the evolution of music is very interesting. Too many people only want to listen to the music they grew up with, marking everything that happened before they were born as irrelevant to their lives or not worth trying. I'm really glad my musical tastes have expanded as much as they have, although they're probably still quite narrow compared to some. However, I still can't enjoy music that I consider too repetitive or monotone - those are still the ultimate crimes to me. I find, more than ever, that I'm listening to 'pure' music now - music without lyrics or a context that is really relevant to me at all. Just music.
The same thing with sexual preferences. If we were born in the middle ages, probably people wouldn't consider jeniffer lopez or Nicole Kidman as beautiful or atractive as they are considered today
Pfft. I don't consider either of them attractive.

the art to mke than other people feel...
what do you feel?
what they feel?
anything is fine...
for example... i like l'arc in ciel and hanson... can believe this?
well, this is me... is freak
jajaja
anyway, music is all, the life, is a remember that you really existed.
some people said "that group is so bad, in other words suck!"
sometimes they have reason...
if you feel the music in your body is enough
that is for me music
other thing is a especific group or artist....
i repeat... somebody talk spanish?
With me , music means the sweetest melodies in my life , the sounds which fullfill my soul , the voices give me more confidence everytime I feel down .... Music help me found myself .... Whatever music is , thanks for what it brings to my life !

Music is the current color of my soul.
This means that it enhances the current emotional state I'm in, so if you ever happen to enter my appartment you'll know immediatelly what mood I'm in and wether or not it can be risked bothering me.
Which is of course the reason why I have a very varied music collection.

Music for me is something that riles me up (if you know what I mean :p).
Muse for instance is on the top of my list, just because I love the music they make, and because it get's the adrenaline flowing. (Although not their last album, but Origin of Symmetry get's it pumping).
KMFDM, same story.
Andrea Bocelli, something on an entirely different level, does not get me riled up, but I love his music for different reasons, reasons I can't explain. I don't know why, but it's just a feeling. Something I can not describe.
That is music for me, listening to something, knowing I love it, but being unable to describe why, or that it really get's the adrenaline flowing.
Sure, trance/hardcore/techno/whatever is great to listen too, for a short amount of time. It get's boring REAL fast.

Music to me is anything that makes me feel alive or sparks my imagination if i can get lost in the melody or the beat then i love it i love to dance so anything that makes me move without me noticing it i would have to agree that 95% of music at least in america suck these days it just copying or remixing there is really no creativity that much in Rap i feel that there is none anymore and thats just my opinion. I like artiest that write their own music and know how to read and play music for example Alicia Keys. The beat doesnt matter to me if i feel it i feel it. It doesnt matter if its pop classical hip hop trip hop techno jungle blue grass or whatever.

I like music no matter what kind it is, though I dislike hardcore rap as it seems most of them are talking about killing someone or making money. I like slow jams, japanese anime music, love and rap put together songs, and a few other genres though I've never listened to hardcore rap.
Music that gives me images in my head is music and music that makes you think and listen to the lyrics. Music is lyrics put into a rhythm which convey the feeling the artist's words. Music can be something to calm you down, excite you, make you dance, and so many more emotions...
Most American rap is garbage as rap has no more originality, that's not to say all rap is garbage, but rapping about something 500+ times usually is.
Music is huge part of my life, because I playing bass guitar in metal band :)
Also music is background of my life. I my favorite styles are metal, punk and j-music, and such bands as (USA)KoRn, SoAD, Bloodhound Gang, NoFX, The Offspring and Metallica;(Russian) Lumen, Zveroforma, I.F.K, Pups, Jane Air, Kirpichi(in english means bricks) Psyhea; (Japan) The Pillows, Sream of Presidents.
P.s If you want to hear russian groups, I can take you some links.
My take on music is quite similar to a couple of what people have already said, which is they allow me to reminisce the event that I heard it from or to what I associate it to. That takes care of about half of the music I like. For the other half, it's the melody of the song. I don't really care about lyrics, and I think of the singer's voice as another instrument. IMO, music should have you relax and be calm. That's probably why I usually pick quiet and tranquil tunes as my favorites.
To answer the OP .... "yes" .... I like music as diverse as AC/DC to Tibetan folk chants or Beethoven to Jethro Tull ... to KOTOKO to the AIR OST to traditional Japanese and traditional indian sitar to Dean frigging Martin. ... I like europop, industrial, trance .... about the only music I don't like is that pretend country music out of nashville (I like bluegrass and appalachian gospel) and that corporate gangsta crap where they are all too busy posturing to actually make music.
My music collection looks crazy to most people...

Music is a passion to me. I've grown up with it. I've been playing the piano since I was 5 and been singing since.. oh who knows... (but recently started taking lessons)
Music means the world to me. I can live without the computer, without T.v, without hanging out with my friends etc...
But without listening to my favourite bands (Nightwish, Pearl Jam, Queens Of The Stone Age, Silverchair, Masterplan..etc...) its like torture.
The lyircs and melodies just get to me. In a way that words can't express.
In short,
Music is my passion, and my love. Thats what it means to me. <3.
Music is like a best friend. It's helping me, if I'm depressed. It's giving me inspirations, when I need them. A essence of my life and I love music. Now, at the moment, I'm listening to "Onmyouza - Kouga Ninpou Chou" and it's giving me strengh for the day... God, I feel like grabbing an e-guitar and forget about everything, just breaking the limit of my life for something more, faster than ultrasonic. Yes, music is something more, at least for my emotions. ;)

Music is a form of relaxation to me...i practically just drown in my music when im tired, sad, angry, down, or just bored...it helps me reflect on things and think of solutions to my problems...it gives me inspiration and motivation to do something depending on what im listening to...it help me pass the time and let's me visualize....for example, a long time ago, i only listened to music to visualize my own anime, my own stories and my own inspirations, i didnt really have any particular music that i liked but in time music has somewhat molded me to think in a different way than before...if i didnt have music, i would never get to unload my stress and have my own time to myself...
my ipod has become my pacemaker :p

Music is one of the most important things in my life. Most of what I do is influenced by the music I listen do. Me and my friends know each other cause we all have the same music tastes, the clothes I wear and based onthe music I listen to and I also play guitar =] which is one of my major hobbies. Like many people before me have said, it's a way of life, and it is.

Music -n:
Any sound that has a pattern.
Noise -n:
Arbitrary (random) sound.
Sounds are usually carried through a medium such as air, but travel faster the more solid a medium is such as water or steel. That's why sonar works well for underwater scans and sucks in the air. For air they use radar. (Of course definitions and an explanation is what you get when you ask an engineer).
Personally, music helps me think faster. I mostly enjoy rock metal (ROCK ON!!!) and sometimes techno (helps me think). Metal helps me think too. I hate rap with a passion.
Music is just another form of entertainment for me. It also relaxes me when Im stressed, angry, or sad.

I'm a big fan of game music, anime BGM & original artists music, original soundtracks from movies. There is a lot of great music the anime has to offer whether from classical instruments, vocals or keyboards.
I enjoy music from all instruments. I search all the time for music pieces that inspire me and explain a certain emotion I cannot otherwise pin point so much that it gives me chills because at that moment I feel truely loved and alive.
Music is a compilation of sounds, human or electronic. What one considers arbitrary noise, some person might find some music in it.
I can listen to any type of music except rap and hiphop (if I heard those on the radio, I would automatically switch it), though my preference is eurodance.
The actual lyrics don't matter as long as they flow with the song (eg. bubblegummy Aqua, or foreign songs), and the voice has to match the song (personal preference).
An excellent song is one that you want to get the moment you hear it, play it on repeat for a week, get sick of it, and really wanting to listen to it three months later. No matter what mood you're in, that is the song you want to listen to.
My selection of excellent songs is very limited since I am very picky regarding my song selection. I may like one song, but may hate a similar song. It boils down to a gut feeling when listening to new songs.
Eg:
Dj Rad - Round and Round
Elemental ft. Gina G - Heaven
Dion - Maybe Baby
There are many other great songs, but are mood/time/something dependent. Remember, I am extremely picky about songs (only have 180MB of songs on my 512 mp3 player even though I have GBs of songs).
And one last comment:
You will know a great song when you hear it. Good songs (in my opinion) will go unnoticeable the first time but can grow on you as time passes.
One example of a great song is Dragostea Din Tei. It was a great song for a while and then the "Numa Numa" animation spread through the internet and most people (that I know) regard the song as a joke and think "techno is stupid". It would probably still be on my mp3 player if not for that animation. I'm glad that many more people were exposed to this song, but not for this reason.

Music is like my pillow, its there when I need to hit it. I do listen to music (mostly local rock) when I'm feeling down and sad, or when I need some motivation to work on a project or school stuff.
Music inspired/is inspiring me to do my best in things I do. The messages the lyrics, or even just the harmony gives, lifts my 'spirits' and often pushes me to give it my all. It is like a part of my soul already, and I wouldn't know how I would go on without it.
I have a decent background in music theory, and I play a couple of instruments (plus I sing on choirs). I really wish music would touch other lives as it has touched mine. ^_^

aperson, when I mean arbitrary noise, I mean random samples. Turn on your TV tuned into nothing and that fizzy sound is what pure noise is. It has no pattern and thus is not music. Anything you might hear (voices and such in noise) is generated by your mind. Try listening to noise, and try to listen to voices. You'll hear them because you want to hear them and your mind finds a way to project voices into the noise.
On an artisic level, some might say their Alarm Clock is noise. Even a beeping clock alarm is music because there's a pattern in it.
I understand what you're trying to say but for my context, I had a different meaning. Some people do not consider certain genres of music actual 'music'. Death metal may be considered 'screaming' by some people and do not classify it as music so it's just arbitrary noise to them.
You do not have to like a certain type of music, but to deny its existence is ignorant.

To me music is paint. It comes in many different shades, hues and colors but all of these different paints do the same thing, they create a vivid images in the mind. These may be of Joy, Sadness, Chaos, or Calm but all music conveys a certain feel just like art. Everybody will have there preferances over paints, however all these colors and shades, not just one, can be used to make the art seen in your minds eye. Like it or not all of these colors make up what we call music.

Wow, lots of "bad poetry" in this thread.
Music is a reflection of humanity, that's how I see it. At least, that's how it ought to be—music is the artistic, tonal (or atonal) representation of what the artist is thinking or feeling. So, it is a reflection of that person, or that band, and as such is a reflection of a part of our world.
That's why I find many different kinds of music interesting. Now, my own upbringing and musical history, life experience and what have you has an effect on my perception of that music. Some artists' concepts I reject, because they bear little resemblance to my own experience or beliefs—I recognize that their effort is valid, but it doesn't speak to me. But most times I can find something in music that speaks to me, even across a wide variety of genres. I believe that having a broad musical taste is important—you shouldn't limit yourself to music from just one genre or time period or part of the world or be afraid to explore bands and sounds outside the norm.
So, I can go from listening to instrumental, expressive post-rock (Mogwai, Sigur Rós, Mono) to indie pop (Imogen Heap, The Decemberists, Belle & Sebastian) to hip-hop (Mos Def, Jurassic 5) to country (Nickel Creek, Neko Case) to rock (Tool, Muse, The Mars Volta) in a breath, because in all these bands (and many others I haven't named specifically) I can find something (or many things) to enjoy.

Music means alot to me, being that I'm a musician and all. To me it is one of the few beautiful things humans create besides things like art etc. The type of music I listen to ranges from jazz, classical, rock, metal, ska, punk, blues, hip-hop, etc. I listen to music in many different languages as long as I enjoy the music.
If you want to know what I listen to, instead of posting a long list of artist (because it would be very long.) Just go to my last fm playlist.
