Anyways, yes, Madhouse has been toning down the violence with this series which I absolutely hate! I mean, take Kastro's and Hisoka's fight when Hisoka got his arms ripped off. Don't people usually bleed when something like that happens?
Be grateful they actually had the balls to show amputation on-screen and not hide the stumps. They even showed him stick his fingers inside his arm! Do you know how rare this thing became nowadays? Even adult anime shows get censored. Plus, it's not like he didn't bleed at all.
If you look here for an example, you can see some blood stains on the stumps

And here, you can see something flowing from the arm that looks like blood, but the lighting doesn't make that clear.

Hey! A toned down violence is better than omitting the whole thing, right?

I know all of this already. I guess I'm being a bit picky since it is my favorite series. :P

The level of violence for the Phantom Troupe arc will be fine.
"Following this cast announcement, they revealed that the Phantom Troupe arc would begin on the 15th of July. Not only that but the arc will mark a significantly more mature turn in the series’ tone and the level of violence will be increased as per the story of the arc."

AWESOME! Thanks for the news! You can already see from Kurapica's eyes on the PV that it may get darker already, but now it' pretty much confirmed? **** YEA!

The level of violence not being too toned down is good news, but I'm more worried about the direction and presentation the arc will receive. I hope the lighting will be akin to that one episode inside Killua's house, because in general the series has been a little too bright looking and York Shin definitely calls for a much darker presentation to go along with the change in tone.
It's also a shame it won't be getting its own OP like in the original series, which was one of my all time favorite OPs, but oh well.

Well, they will probably change the opening in episode 50.
So, at least part of the arc will have a different opening.

im glad to hear those news about the yorkshin ark, but they already had made some changes, even the color palette is less brigth and colorful, beign hisoka the one you can notice it the most.

I've always felt that the tone has been pretty appropriate throughout this new anime adaption. MH seems very in touch with the manga and are adjusting the direction of the show for this upcoming arc accordingly, as it should be.
This news and the new soundtrack are a great testament to that.
Has it been confirmed that we won't be getting a new OP anytime soon?

It seems Madhouse is sticking with a new opening every 26 episodes. I'd prefer a brand new opening for the beginning of Yorknew but I guess we'll just have to wait until around episode 50 :(

Thank you very much for the info! Couldn't find that anywhere.
Great start to the YS arc, though the flashbacks at the beginning anoyed the crap outta me.

Finally!
I am glad there was no long seminare or a montage like during Gon/Kill learning Nen arc...
Don't think the old anime had small introductions for all the body guards.
Kurapika should of said, "kill", instead of "eradicate". sound more beastly!
and for the next episode and into the future! NO MORE GON AND KILLU! MORE FOCUS ON Kura!

So we finally get to see someone else for a change.
This time it's Kurapika.
Looks like he's a Conjurer, but wants to learn Enhancer technique too.
Kurapika sure has an interesting plan, but long term plan of revenge.
Kurapika should of said, "kill", instead of "eradicate". sound more beastly!
I don't think he tried to invoke "Never Say Die" though. I think he meant it more as "wiping them from existence", which realistically means killing them, I know, but it sounds more "rage-y".
Anyway, this episode was, in all actuality, one huge tease. Because everything was set up to show us Kurapika's ability, and of course the episode cuts off right at that moment.
Also, why didn't they showcase the abilities of the last two guys? That makes them seem rather expendable.
The episode IS, however, the first time when we have almost an entire episode of Kurapika in Vengeance Mode. Which isn't going to change any time soon.
Sasuke from the Naruto series was apparently based on this guy.

Just watched the episode 39 and it was good. But not as good as the previous serie, really.
The episode which open "Phantom Troup arc" from the previous series had some fillers but the atmosphere was really awesome.
Just watch episode 45 of the previous anime of Hunter x Hunter.
In the old episode, the soundtrack was really powerful and the design was brillant. In the new serie, I was a bit disappointed by the desgn, but it matched more with the manga design. The soundtrack is not really good, not as cool as the previous anime.
Some key moments of new episode/old episode:
When Kurapika's master said that he can't master enhancer abilities as good as a natural enhancer, it was awesome in the previous serie. The music was so powerful, deep. We can feel Kurapika's feelings right now at this moment (Kurapika theme).
In the new serie, it was just ok, not as strong. Just a moment like another.
We had the moment when Kurapika create his chain in the previous serie. Pretty ntense. In the new, it wasn't there (in the manga too btw).
And an other awesome moment is when Kurapika speaks about the "rules" in the previous anime... Nothing as intense in the new.
In the new serie, the moment when Kurapika said to the guy to shut up... it wasn't as cool as in the old serie. Not as sharp.
The previous seiyuu was really awesome with Kurapika, especially during this arc.
So yeah this episode 39 of HxH 2011 is good. Only good.
But the episode from the old serie was so awesome.
Well, it was predictable, the arc Phantom troup of the previous anime was so awesome and intense; it can't be as good.

never expected madhouse to hold a candle against 1999, and i'm fine with that really, but this was still disappointing as hell.
Really? Storywise it wrapped up all the important bits in one episode. Everything they skipped is fairly minor and not really important to the story at large, or can be told at a later stage.
Music... music in this episode was still pretty hit-or-miss though. A lot of it was forgettable, and the guitar during Kurapika's "I want to manifest a chain" explanation was completely out of place, but the Asian music for Haiku-guy fit like a charm.
is it jsut me, or did kurapika's va change?
Is the anime going on hiatus or they have hollidays in Japan ?
According to Anime News Network, the next episode will air on 2012-08-04.Which is like 3 weeks away.
is it jsut me, or did kurapika's va change?
I haven't payed much attention to it,but the VA could have tried to adapt to Kurapika's character change after the skip.

Definitely still Sawashiro Miyuki as Kurapika.
Syoboi shows episode #40 airing as normal next week. I'd rank that as much more reliable than ANN.

-EPISODE 39-
First, we got a new intro that talks about the six Hatsu classes. Accompanied by some familiar silhouettes
http://i1088.photobucket.com/albums/i336/MKM03/HxH%20YN/HorribleSubsHunterXHunter-39480pmkv_snapshot_0001_20120715_143025.png
On the content, both versions started adapting chapter 83 which includes Kurapika's training. But which one was done better?
The first thing to mention is in Nippon's adaptation (episode 45) starts with what appears to be one of Kurapika's nightmares that he described in chapter 123. But that's not the question here... the real question is why the hell is he naked and wrapped up in a chain bondage?!! This is how they depict a naked girl! NOT a man! ((Don't ask me how I know)) but let me make this clear... due to this episode (as well as other previous episodes) and the way they depicted Kurapika here, I came to conclusion that he really was meant to be a girl in Nippon's adaptation and that's why I'm going to refer to him as a 'she' in this adaptation.
http://i1088.photobucket.com/albums/i336/MKM03/HxH%20YN/S-AHunterxHunter-45x264-vorbis9928520Cmkv_snapshot_0114_20120624_013300.pn g
Now that I got that out of the way, let's move on...
Madhouse's adaptation starts off with Kurapika's visit to the agency he visited before. In Nippon's adaptation it was during her train trip. You may not be able to see it, but this time she did make something out of her aura. In episode 40, it wasn't there, but it's here despite it being barely visible. No wonder Kurapika couldn't see it. How that heck can see a black thing over a very dark background?! When they say the old adaptation is "dark" that's not what it's supposed to be! Darkness means grim, sad, full of death etc. NOT dark colors!
http://i1088.photobucket.com/albums/i336/MKM03/HxH%20YN/HorribleSubsHunterXHunter-39480pmkv_snapshot_0242_20120715_143852.png

We see the beginning of the training and we see the Water Deviation. As we see, there seems to be some dust in the water. Nippon's adaptation changed to crystals and she did make crystals in the water! According to the water deviation notes from chapter 63, conjurer nen creates impurities in water. Are crystals considered impurities?! We also see in the manga the color has changed which wasn't depicted in the anime. In Nippon's adaptation Kurapika tries more than once while in the manga and MH adaptation was for one time only.

Kurapika's "I want to be stronger" line was made into a flashback from episode 30 instead of mentioned verbally by Mizuken. In the Nippon's adaptation it was a reference to what she said after the second water deviation attempt.

Nippon's adaptation showed us Kurapika's broken swords

Madhouse's adaptation for some reason decided to skip the following two pages about the ratios and the difference between the enhancer and conjurer.
http://i1088.photobucket.com/albums/i336/MKM03/HxH%20YN/hunter09_178-2.jpg
=Page 1=
-Panel 1-
-"And say both of you and your enemy's physical strengths have a value of 100." - "The enemy is an enhancer with 100% mastery."
-Panel 2-
-"And he..."
-Panel 3-
-"...reinforces his fist with 100% of his nen, and punches you with all he's got."
-Panel 4-
-"This would be the equation..." - "...That represents it." (AP=Flesh Punch), (SP=Nen Reinforcement)
-Panel 5-
-"With your nen abilities..." - "... you can only reinforce the body with 60% efficiency."
-Panel 6-
-(DP=Physical Defence), (SP=Nen Reinforcement)
-Panel 7-
-"In other words..."
=Page 2:=
-Panel 1-
-"... you'd get damage worth 40 points even if you block the attack.
-Panel 2-
-"If you get in a fistfight with a master enhancer..." - "...you'll have little chance."
-Panel 3-
-"Of course, this is overly simplified." - "Nobody's exactly equal in strength. How you feel day to day will affect you, as well as where you're fighting, and its context."
-Panel 4-
-"Nen is even more complex."
-Panel 5-
-"Joy, sadness, fear, hatred, carelessness, devotion, excitement, doubt, pleasure, shame, determination,- All the emotions you're capable of factor into nen." - "It might enable something beyond 100%"
Nippon's adaptation did keep the equations, but they didn't explain what AP, SP and DP stands for. The emotion scene didn't show us the avatar from the manga.

Nippon's adaptation omitted this panel
http://i1088.photobucket.com/albums/i336/MKM03/HxH%20YN/hunter09_180.jpg
-"A conjurer is often not as balanced in offence and defense compared to an enhancer." - "On the other hand, you could be formidable if you find your groove."
Both version has ended the scene before Kurapika says what he wants to conjure. Mizuken asks her in Nippon's adaption.
http://i1088.photobucket.com/albums/i336/MKM03/HxH%20YN/S-AHunterxHunter-45x264-vorbis9928520Cmkv_snapshot_0840_20120712_182115.jp g
Next comes Kurapika's second visit to the agency. Madhouse added a flashback of Hisoka's message from the Hunter Exam. That wasn't in the manga. There was also a brief filler moment showing the agent's reaction to his eyes. Nippon's adaptation showed this scene at the end of episode 45 and the beginning of episode 48 without showing the end until a later time.

We go back to the training for a brief moment, and back to present time and see someone else. It's Senretsu! ((Or Melody depending on your translation)) And she came to the same agency as well!
http://i1088.photobucket.com/albums/i336/MKM03/HxH%20YN/HorribleSubsHunterXHunter-39480pmkv_snapshot_1235_20120715_154206.png

Then we go and see some other characters... first is Baise and her ability
http://i1088.photobucket.com/albums/i336/MKM03/HxH%20YN/HorribleSubsHunterXHunter-39480pmkv_snapshot_1358_20120715_155105.png

Then we see Squala and his dogs along with Shachmono ((Who I used to call him Lupin before memorizing his name))
http://i1088.photobucket.com/albums/i336/MKM03/HxH%20YN/HorribleSubsHunterXHunter-39480pmkv_snapshot_1643_20120715_160534.png
Nippon's adaptation made the first encounter between Kurapika and Senretsu in the train as well as a preview of his ability the same was as Baise's filler. Let's see how it was...
The first thing that caught my eyes was the board here. At first it looks like gibberish, but when you mirror the image, that's Italian text (Or so I think)
http://i1088.photobucket.com/albums/i336/MKM03/HxH%20YN/S-AHunterxHunter-45x264-vorbis9928520Cmkv_snapshot_0154_20120624_013938.pn g
Kurapika meets Senretsu later and have some conversations

Until we get a plot about some thugs trying to steal Kurapika's Hunter License. We see Kurapika's "Guiding Ring Finger" that he used to block the bullets the same way used in Nostrade's castle in chapter 68.

We go back to canon material, but not before a filler scene of Kurapika putting her contacts on in episode 48 and recalling the yet incomplete meeting with the agent.

Here we see a close up of Kurapika's chains. They lack details in Madhouse's adaptation and the color is different. In Nippon's adaptation she also carries a bag while he didn't have anything in the manga and MH's adaptation.

Here we have the details of the list in picture. In the manga they were just text and only the eyes that got highlighted. Nippon's adaptation showed the rest of the meeting with the agent, but they changed the last part to include the list from the card as well as a filler scene following that.

The conversation with Basho was also different. In the manga he made a comment about the list, but instead in Madhouse's adaptation he comments about the Kurta eyes and says the information from the list. Nippon's adaptation described the eyes using Kurapika's voice.

Dalzollene gives the guys a six minutes period to be prepared for a test. In the manga and Madhouse's adaptation it was a surprise attack. Also the bottler in Nippon's adaptation leaves the room before it starts. The rest of the time is everyone examining the place and deciding their targets.

Overall, I think Madhouse gave a better presentation than Nippon. Nippon's episode 45 had a very annoying problem with scene transition. They couldn't hold a scene for a long period of time and always cut before it ends and that annoyed the hell out of me! Not to mention Kurapika's gender confusion caused by the episode and the way she gained her ability does not match how it was described in chapter 123, but that'll be for another time.

is it jsut me, or did kurapika's va change?
Nope, and if it sounded different to you it's probably because Kurapica kind of is a different person when he's off by himself. That's what makes the character so interesting, he might be the most agreeable and diplomatic when in a group, but immediately becomes cold and calculating when alone and on his mission.

good to have your comnparisons since i saw a lot of hate for this week episode, and i hardly remember this part of the old version since i found it boring, funny how there wasnt a comparison of how in a filler badk in the boat kurapica acted like a girl after watching leorio naked, not to mention that by this time in the old version killua had a dual personality and had already overcome that, some of the details that made this to be a new series rather a continuation.
Kudo's to Senritsu's VA by the way, she does a really good job matching the voice of Senritsu in the 1999 version.

Togashi Hunter x Hunter characters, really the artchitect for so many other characters, like Sasuke to Kurapika, Boa Hancock to Baise, and maybe more. Though I can only see tiny aspects between Baise and Boa. Sasuke was a big carbon copy from Kurapika (and a bad one later on). I wonder if Hunter X Hunter was to continue on w/o any breaks, I bet Sasuke would of been a better character than he is now... lol :heh:

The title is Red Phantom and it;s coming January 2013. Apparently the plot of the movie has something to do with the Kurita massacre and it's being written by Togashi

Great comparison shinobi. But I still can't over the absence of Kaito. Hope they'll make some amazing flashback or something.

Maybe I'm just impatient to see (and hear) the Ryodan, but that episode contained a little too much superfluous filler. Certainly more than last week, which already had some. I hope it's just an introductory thing and that they're not thinking about really stretching out the arc. Heavens Arena was pretty faithful to the manga and well paced for the most part, but maybe Togashi's issues with consistent productivity will inevitably lead to more and more filler from now on.

gon's fortune telling was accurate. this was a good episode.
one thing i dont like it how the portray kuripika's eyes in this version, only the edges of his eyes glow, it doesnt become the beautiful scarlet eyes they mention. other than that im good.

Kurapika got himself an interesting job.
The requirements were pretty high, but he is also very determined.
Guess revenge is his driving force.
Introductions and displays of power were really interesting.
So Killua's brother managed to discover something after all.
Nah, the eyes have been like that throughout the series.

-EPISODE 40-
We start with the surprise attack, and yes, the butler dies. However, he was manipulated by Baise to protect her. Nippon's adaptation didn't show him die because he wasn't there to begin with. Madhouse also shows us how strong is Senritsu by flipping a table with a smack to the floor!

To those who wonder, why does the subs call Senritsu "Melody"? That's because Senritsu's direct translation is Melody. This name was used by Viz in both manga and Nippon's adaptation's subs. I'm not saying it's wrong, but it's a name and names should not be translated.

If you've read the manga or watched the old anime you should understand why his eyes aren't full scarlet. I will send you a PM...

It seems so. In the past they have deleted one of my messages for the same reason.
I don't get it neither, why does the spoiler tag exist then? =S
But those are the rules in this forum.

You can understand why they exist if you read the Forum Spoiler Policy (http://forums.animesuki.com/faq.php?faq=animesuki_faq#faq_spoilerpolicy) but if you don't want to do that I can give you a couple of reasons: to comment on episodes that were already aired but who haven't been subbed and to make small comparisons to the original/previous adaptation like those done on the this very thread as long as they don't cover stuff that can potentially be covered in the show in the future.

Well it hasn't been explained yet even if the close up of pic of the current eyes gives it away.

I guess she traded all her looks for her voice...
Anyway, i think Kurapica don't have to control his eyes color. All he need to do is to wear colored contact lenses.
Just to dispel any remaining confusion regarding Melody's gender, I'll borrow one of SHINOBI-03's pics if he doesn't mind.

Maybe it's going to be about Kurapica's carnage of the Phantom Troupe that can't be shown on TV. :heh:

If they can't even show that on TV, York Shin's arc will be heavily censored. ;/
I bet the movie will be about what happened after York Shin's arc with Kurapika, and will have flashbacks of the time the Kuruta clan got annihilated. I have a hunch about the "number 4" part, but it would involve spoilers.
The "trailer" was freaking stupid, there was no scene from the movie, it was all from the anime.
thx for the pics.
so see, this is one thing i dont like, though if they make the whole "trying to contain himself" theory, i might be ok with it. but he has to be full scarlet red when he faces the spiders, else i'll be pissed
Well, it'd be pretty stupid of him to show his red eyes in the mansion, because everyone there is perfectly aware of how much money they could get by killing him and taking his eyes. In front of the spiders, he'd probably care less because they're about to die...
^Implying an attempt to kill Kurapica is a good idea.

she was always a women, her voice, tone of voice and personality suggests the same, even if her hair is like that
she was always a women, her voice, tone of voice and personality suggests the same, even if her hair is like that
I confess I was a bit confused, but only on the 1999 anime. Her voice is a bit more feminine here.
Senritsu is probably my favorite new character from this particular arc, even more so than a few members from Genei Ryodan. Maybe it's because of her calm and gentle personality(despite her backstory) and how she talks to people(specially Kurapika). 2011 HxH anime got a great(and better imo) VA to play her.
What I love about Senritsu (and a lot of other HxH characters, actually--she's just a good example of this) is what a unique character she is, taken as a complete package.
It's sort of hard to describe what I mean... a lot of side characters--and sometimes even main characters--in anime/manga are basically defined by a single standout trait or at most a handful of traits associated with a particular archetype. A character with Melody's design who appeared in a different series would, I think, be defined primarily by her looks. HxH doesn't completely ignore her unconventional appearance--there's that moment when Kurapika gets her gender wrong, for instance--but she reacts in her usual calm fashion, and the moment simply passes. She isn't the butt of the joke. She isn't just the ugly woman we're supposed to laugh at.
And then she has that lovely distinctive voice and manner of speaking--yet she isn't merely a soothing motherly type. She's intelligent and quite sly. She has an intriguing ability. And still, she doesn't come across as an awkward bundle of random character traits. All these facets fit together quite smoothly. HxH, with its enormous supporting cast, has a ton of characters like this. I love that we get such a wide variety of character designs and personalities, and that they give us such a rich sense of being people with their own lives separate from the main story, not just one-note paper dolls.

that was a very nice way of explaining it. i particularly wanted her to stay with kuripika becuz i wanted too see more of her and her power. the way she can interpret how you think and how your feeling and going through from something as a simple as a heartbeat is an amazing ability, and i like that fact that she doesn't seem to use it to take advantage of others in a bad way.

So? She's, like Kurapika, still someone who will serve a mafia boss if it furthers her own ends.
She probably is not an angel(for the sake of the show),I don't think anyone in that group wants to "serve"the mafia Boss, but merely use him. They have to blend-in to achieve their goals, that's like calling a police/agent spy who's trying to take down an illegal organization(random example) a bad person since he's technically serving the bad guys.
Although I am sure that some of them are trying to use him for bad things,I don't think that it makes everyone in that group a "devil".
HxH consists purely of Grey And Grey morality. I'm not sure whether anyone's angelicness should be a discussion point at all.

For most of them, it's a paycheck. Just like in the real mafia - where the hell do you find people who serve others out of slavish devotion? For someone they barely know. And who's a mafia boss.
It doesn't take away from the fact they're helping said mafia boss with his activities. Which no doubt include murder, extortion, and whatever the hell it is mafias do.

That's not my point. My point is that, just because she hasn't been hostile so far, doesn't mean Senritsu "won't use her abilities for bad things". She's already using them to get a job in the mafia.

VA for Chrollo and Shalnark, just don't fit their image and I'm strongly disliking Shalnark childish voice.
Maybe I'm bias with the old animation (1999) VA's :)
Everyone in Genei Ryodan are badass! Each at Hisoka level or above! I lol@ Hisoka getting horny, looking at Chrollo. I guess its wrong to mark him as a pedo.
I dunno, I think Chrollo's voice is actually fairly befitting.

killua is already wearing a bishonen attire...
He wore those very clothes in the manga for a few chapters.
HxH is one of those rare shounens where characters actually change clothes.
Oooh, lots of new voices and sounds in this episode.
That church music? No complaints, a real good mood setter. Most of the voices are slightly different, of course, but they mostly are very similar or fit well enough. Feitan is a bigger change than most, but it still fits his quiet theme. Kuroro is a tad different, they seem to be giving him more emotion here. Doesn't bother me too much, but mileage may vary here.
Shalnark's voice... was the biggest disappointment. Too young in my opinion.
Uvo is awesome. Just... yes, awesome. Different voice, but Broskandar fits Uvo like a glove.

Gon & Killua learned interesting info about Greed Island.
So basically you enter the game and can't get out if you don't find a save point.
That's sure one dangerous game, but not unexpected since it was made for Nen users.
Kurapika & few others managed to get hired finally. First mission: protect the boss.
Wtf, the boss is a cute girl called Neon?! No way! Her dad is the one Kurapika is after, probably.

Her dad's the one with the power, but Neon's the "collector" that Kurapika wants to get close to. Her dad buys her "treasures" in exchange for her fortunetelling. She wants to go the auction, but when it's too dangerous the bodyguards get sent in her place. What does she want to buy? A bunch of human body parts including Kurta eyes. People like Neon who collect this stuff are the very reason Kurapika's tribe was slaughtered. No one would bother stealing something that wasn't valuable. She's his target.

Umm, I gotta say. Huge disappointment in Pakunoda's first appearance. They REALLY skimped on drawing her. I think you all know why that's unacceptable. I'm not really a fan of the new style of drawing Anime--way too clean. I miss the grittiness of 90s drawing, like Gundam Wing and the original Hunter X Hunter--am liking the new series so far, though.
Just curious, I'm not familiar with the manga of Hunter x hunter; was the Greed Island OVA as bad as a manga as it was as the anime? There was a huge character change in Hisoka and the series turned incredibly childish. Just wantin to gauge how Greed Island will be if they take the remake that far.

Uvo is awesome. Just... yes, awesome. Different voice, but Broskandar fits Uvo like a glove.
Indeed. Uvo is basically an evil Rider, so Akio Ohtsuka is a perfect fit. As for the rest (based on what little lines we got)...
- Chrollo: Another great fit. The only nitpick I've got is that Mamoru Miyano is a rather overexposed VA, which for me slightly reduces the mystique surrounding the character. But leaving that aside (which he can't help), he's definitely the man for the job and I look forward to his future lines.
- Feitan: An improvement over his voice in the original anime, which, while unique and relatively charming, ended up misguidedly turning Feitan into a trap of sorts. Plus, it's great to hear Kappei Yamaguchi use a voice similar to his creepy L voice once again (probably an unpopular opinion but I gotta say I don't care much for the more normal (for lack of a better word) voice he uses for Usopp and whatnot).
- Nobunaga: Not bad, but I think his original voice fit his character and appearance better, which is kind of annoying since that VA played the guy whose heart Killua ripped out in this version. Could've had him reprise Nobunaga while they were at it, but oh well, the new guy is still a serviceable replacement.
- Franklin: The only one I downright disliked. Calmer and more nonchalant Franklin in the original sounded much better IMO and closer to how I imagined him in the manga.
- Shalnark: Heard lots of complaints, but I'm not sure what the problem is. He's an amiable and cheerful kid... and sounds like one. Plus, hearing Noriko Hidaka in this day and age is an awesome privilege.
The rest we didn't hear as much from (except Machi, whom we'd already heard narrate half an episode), but sounded all right.
I had mixed feelings about their scenes though. The first one was pure filler and honestly felt kind of dry and pointless to me. They already did this with Kurapica's team, in that they came up with filler introductions for them, which resulted in them being essentially introduced twice (first the filler one, then the canon one). I can't really appreciate such senseless padding.
The other scenes were much better though, since, what do you know, Togashi's a better writer than the anime staff. Well, there was still a little anime original material in having Hisoka arrive late, but it worked well enough. And it was rather amusing in that they went for the exact opposite of the original anime, which had Hisoka be the first one to arrive (in case you're wondering the manga didn't specify). I'd say this version's liberty made more sense though considering Hisoka's character.
I felt the music placement could've been better though. The church-like tune felt a little overstated and lacking in subtlety to me. The original anime usually went for this cool and relaxed unofficial Phantom Troupe theme in their scenes, which to me fit their image better - they're kind of like the Turks in FFVII, boasting perpetually cool attitudes and possessing great banter between them. But anyway we'll see how they're handled from now on. Hopefully well, since they're my absolute favorite villainous group in shounen manga.

And here's Neon. Now I know some have complained about her colors, but I don't have a problem with it. Almost looks like Gothic style and the first one to come to mind is Stocking. Personally, I didn't like her Nippon's colors. Too much pink for my taste.

Hmm... looks like we skipping some of chapter 71 and we get an early look of THE PHANTOM TROUPE!!

Here's what I think of the voices:
- Shalnark: It fits.
- Pakunoda: Smexy!
- Phinks: Cool!
- Uvogin: Super Cool!
- Shizuku: It fits.
Phinks does not wear his Pharaoh outfit! Even though we saw it in the opening theme. Bonolenov's design is also different. Early in the manga, his bandages had a different shape that later changed to regular bandages. I guess Togashi made it that way to be easier to draw.

Episode 51 of Nippon's adaptation start with this scene talking about Yorknew. And speaking of which, I think these backgrounds are lazy! Yes, we get it... The city is called Yorknew and it's based on New York! But couldn't they make their own backgrounds instead of these saturated pictures of the real New York without any alterations?!

A change of dialogue here. Madhouse's adaptation made Nostrade's excuse to be absent is playing golf and hunting instead of having some time with a woman.
http://i1088.photobucket.com/albums/i336/MKM03/HxH%20YN/hunter08_145.jpg

"I'm sorry, but I think I'm in the wrong show! Nobody else got Moe eyes but me!"
We see here Neon's ability. Madhouse gave the phantom a blue/purple color. Nippon's adaptation made it green and I swear every time I look at it I keep thinking of Slimer from Ghostbusters! Both version showed us how the phantom writes by controlling Neon's hand. This was not shown in the manga.

What I think of their voices:
- Nobunaga: Good enough.
- Feitan: Mega cool!!
- Franklin: Good enough.
Side note: Feitan speaks in a special manner in Viz's translation. Feitan uses wrong grammar like how a person tries to speak a language he's not fluent with and often chooses the wrong words or inaccurate grammar. For example, here Feitan says "I don't like Hisoka". In the manga he says "I no like Hisoka". There's a reason why he speaks like this and it's revealed in the Chimera Ants arc.
http://i1088.photobucket.com/albums/i336/MKM03/HxH%20YN/HorribleSubsHunterXHunter-41480pmkv_snapshot_1538_20120729_170659.jpg
Another thing to note is Franklin's design. Madhouse got it right, but in Nippon's adaptation he had piercings/rings instead of the stitches and he had green sleeve thingies that cover his earlobes.
http://i1088.photobucket.com/albums/i336/MKM03/HxH%20YN/HorribleSubsHunterXHunter-41480pmkv_snapshot_1610_20120729_171008.jpg

In the previous desert scene, there was an extra dialogue between Feitan and Machi that got moved to this scene.
http://i1088.photobucket.com/albums/i336/MKM03/HxH%20YN/hunter08_152.jpg
-Panel 1-
- Machi: "What do you thin he's after?" - "I bet it'll be some old books." - "He loves books."
-Panel 2-
- Feitan: "No." - "Must be game."
-Panel 3-
- Machi: "Game?"
- Feitan: "They have most expensive game in world here."
-Panel 4-
- "Most dangerous too." - "Makes me curious."
-Panel 5-
- Machi: "But's it's only a game."
- Feitan: "Well..." - "... He'll tell us."
Unfortunately, this awesome scene was not shown. Hopefully it'll be brought back when they're on the move.

As for Chrollo's voice, I think it's badass.
In this scene, the mummy in Nippon's adaptation was not shown. Or to be exact they tried to censor it using Dalzollene's head like it's too gruesome to be shown...! Madhouse gave us the mummy like any normal one.

- Shalnark: Heard lots of complaints, but I'm not sure what the problem is. He's an amiable and cheerful kid... and sounds like one.
He sounds like he's in his mid-teens rather than early twenties. That's the only complaint, really.
It's especially a problem since he's supposed to be one of the smarter members.

For me I don't have a problem with Shalnark's voice. I got used to male characters with female voices (Goku, Kenshin, Sojiro, Luffy).
Especially Sojiro. Noriko Hidaka has voiced him in Rurouni Kenshin. It's not a new voice to me.

That's not it. It's mostly because most people and myself are bit bias to the voice he had back in the 1999 version. Shalnark reminds me of Doremon now...:uhoh:

I don't remember what he sounded like. I still think his voice doesn't fit his build. Or role in the troop.
VA's so far are good, but if we are trying to compare both versions, I would say only Feitan and Machi seems better fitted for their characters on this version.

[/SPOILER]
you forgot to mention that the first scenes with the ryodan (in madhouse's version) is filler, as well as hisoka being late and being turned-on just by danchou's silhouette (which i really liked btw). madhouse also changed the scene where danchou ordered the ryodan to steal everything. instead of this epic formation (http://www.mangareader.net/207-14080-19/hunter-x-hunter/chapter-71.html), madhouse had the ryodan sitting around like a bunch of kids. madhouse also implied that most of the ryodan was surprised with the "steal everything" order when in fact most of them just had poker faces (http://www.mangareader.net/207-14080-19/hunter-x-hunter/chapter-71.html).
in comparison, nippon's version was a lot more faithful to the manga in the introduction of the ryodan. note: i don't think being more faithful is necessarily better and i will maintain that point to the end. but the 1999 version has always been castigated for even the most minor changes. i expect consistent standards.

I dunno, I thought it fits him, being the most upbeat member of the spider.

If I recalled correctly, Gon was planning to purchase a pager in the manga/old series right? Now, its replace by a cell phone and I was bit stump about the beetle design phone, that they decide to keep.

Can't wait for action, next week.
Edit* lol it was not a pager, it was a cell phone. Man, 1999 wasn't back than enough to use a pager yet... maybe 1990? haha

Since the Madhouse anime premiered, this thread had been mysteriously invaded by about three new members trying to convince everyone that this was bound to be the superior adaptation from day one, so don't be surprised by those biased "comparisons" that are more like opinions (and omissions).

I agree with you when you say that faithful doesn't necessarily mean better but for fans of the manga who watch the remake(which is said by Madhouse to follow the manga as close as they can), they want to see Togashi's story not the director's which is why they mix up faithful with better

Reunion with Leorio was nice, and got them a good deal too ^^
They brought him up to speed about their recent quest as well.
Gon arm wrestling to raise funds was a typical Leorio idea.
Kurapika having a heart-to-heart with his companion was pretty unusual for him.
Interesting episode. Lots of promise of action next time.

-EPISODE 42-
Manga: First part of chapter 71, chapter 72, final scene in chapter 76, chapter 73
Nippon's Adaptation: Second half of episode 50, episode 51, episode 52, part of episode 54.
Episode starts with an introduction about the auctions and market. What has been said came from the first page of chapter 71. And apparently, the competition is absent from here. Nippon's adaptation has kept it along with the results, but Killua's gambling got altered. In the manga based on his description, he probably went to a hoarse race. We see in Nippon's adaptation episode 50 how it went. Killua went to a casino and Gon stuck to online auction sites.

Madhouse once again gives us modern day designs with the phones here. But most importantly, the beetle phone is here. Oh, and Leoreo is back as well! Leoreo's knowledge, or should I say ignorance about nen got extended a bit with a part from chapter 76. In Nippon's adaption, this scene is in episode 54.

Now that I've got my comparison and other things out of the way in four forums, I want to discuss two important matters. First in production-wise and the second story-wise.
-First Matter:
Am I the only one who thinks things started to get backwards between the two studios? In the past we've praised Madhouse's adaptation for being the closest and most faithful to the manga. But as of Whale Island arc, it feels Madhouse's quality is getting off track by making unnecessary scene alterations, deleting scenes and lines and adding a lot of filler scenes, and that's started to get on my nerves! If this goes on, the quality of this arc will get lower and it'll make Nippon's adaptation the closest to the manga in a complete contrast to how it was at the beginning.
-Second matter:
How do you think Leoreo learned nen? As seen, he only knows one practice. Did he try to learn it on his own or by a teacher? If he learned by a teacher, then he got himself a bad one if he didn't teach him everything! That, or he went the slow way. Cause as we all know, there are two methods to learn nen: The first is the quick way which is opening the vents by another nen user like what Wing did to the boys, and the other way is the slow way the same as Zushi who took months till he reached his current level that we saw in Heave's Arena arc.

Probably with a teacher, since it seemed the chairman arranged for a teacher to be sent to whoever passed and needed one. That teacher probably just taught whatever Leorio could use instead of doing an infodump right at the start. And Leorio isn't as good or as motivated as Gon and Killua are, so he'll take more time to learn everything.

Yeah, it's been bugging me as well. York Shin needs no filler. The only addition I've liked thus far was the first scene with Hisoka and Chrollo in this episode. Otherwise the anime original material has been pure padding. I can only guess that it's because Togashi's work is on hiatus again (I've always assumed that this new adaptation of questionable necessity was partially a way of motivating him to get back to work and finally finish the damn story), but they still have about 267 chapters left until they catch up with the manga, so it's annoying that they're already resorting to padding, especially in the best arc in the series.
But oh well. I think this episode didn't have as many needless creative liberties as the previous ones, so who knows, maybe things will get better as we progress further into the arc.

Filler is understandable. My gripe is deleting scenes from the manga. In two episodes I was disappointed to not have two of my most anticipated scenes from the early YN episodes: the competition between Gon & Killua and Leoreo's haggling.
I complained about that with Nippon's adaptation and I will keep complaining about if Madhouse kept doing this.

When adapting a story to a different medium there are bound to be changes. Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood is a good example of this, even though it sticks closer to the manga it took things out which removed things which the director felt strayed from the core story of Ed and Al and I prefer Brotherhood over the manga as a result
Madhouse is doing the same thing, we got the general idea that Leorio haggled those phones through Killua's line about receiving applause instead. I liked the filler stuff MH added because it relates to other plot points in this arc like Hisoka staring with glee at Chrollo which has great importance later in this arc. Being faithful isn't always necessarily better and I'm saying this even though I prefer this remake over the 99 version! Don't get me wrong though, Togashi is a great storyteller which is why this arc in particular got popular in the first place. As long as they don't take things out that detract from the core points of this arc or the filler is there for the sake of filler then I have no problem with Madhouse.
The competition scene was fun and all but it doesn't really add to the arc other than that Gon and Killua are still kids in this messed up world, in my opinion but that might be just me.

As much as some of it annoys me as well,it's also understandable, since no Director is going to copy/paste manga material directly.
Also they take out mostly minor stuff which may seem important to you,but not to them.
They probably have a plan for each episode and they might have even animated the parts you wanted to see,but in the end the scene had to be shortened/changed/removed to fit into the plan of a 20 minutes episode.

The Dark Sonata sounds like it was loosely based on the real life urban legend of the song Gloomy Sunday (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gloomy_Sunday), which became infamously known as the Hungarian Suicide Song for it's supposedly causing people who listened to it to commit suicide shortly after.
This really was a wonderful episode.
MH has taken a rather startling slip in quality since this arc has begun, which is a shame, but they seem to be coming back. Only time will tell, I suppose.
The next episode should be interesting.
Argh! I also wanted more of the Leorio haggling scene and what happened afterward. It's one of his abilities! Really looking forward to upcoming epis.
I remember like 10 yrs ago, my ex-gf and I were looking for places that sold goat meat. This was not in a big city with a lot of ethnic groups. So she did a search for 'meat market' on a search engine and got a ton of hits for porno like sites. :uhoh: We had no idea why in the hell that showed up for years. I thought we were being re-directed cause of some malware or she bungled up the search somehow. It was just too funny.

Minor cuts aren't really an issue to me. It's hard for me to fault Madhouse from omitting Gon and Killua's competition/a few of Leorio's lines because:
A. Those scenes aren't important to the series as a whole.
B. The older adaptation removed many more important scenes.
42 was fantastic. Madhouse is doing an amazing job. The conversation between Kurapika and Melody; Gon armwrestling Shizuku; Hisoka's silent scene...all very tense and well done.

what do you think of madhouse altering the introduction of the ryodan? and how did the last episode compare to 99? ^_____^
Hm.. I do agree that changing or omitting scenes shouldn't be judged as harshly as long as the story and the characters remain intact compared to the source material. I can't fault people for wanting to see the missing scenes though.

I think that the filler scenes involving the Troupe in 41 were good...they introduced everyone's name for the audience's sake. And it's not like it was some massive alteration either, since the ending of the episode featured the manga material as is.
42 was better than its counterpart in 1999.

A word about the "darkness" in Nippon's adaptation:
So, a common complaint about Nippon's adaptation's fans about the new one is the brightness and how they always say the older series was better because it wasn't bright. Well guess what... the dark colors issue is a lie!
The dark tone of the old adaptation was not intentional and was not a choice by the staff. The reason why the colors look faded out is because the films were not remastered for DVD. The DVD masters were the same as the VHS masters back then and didn't get an intensive remastering process like what they do nowadays for older films.
The difference in color is obvious if you go back and compare the DVD masters to the original cels.
Here's an example. This is a shot from the DVD:
http://i1088.photobucket.com/albums/i336/MKM03/HxH%20YN/S-AHunterxHunter-58x264-vorbis7A5F2045mkv_snapshot_1710_20120810_015206.jp g
And this is the original cel:
http://screenshotcomparison.com/images/cel_8452307916.jpg
You can obviously tell there's a vast difference in brightness and level of details.

what are you even trying to get at? so the cels are drawn brighter, sowhat? do you really think someone as experienced as furuhashi is ignorant of this remastering process? do you honestly think he was all, "oooh i envision the hxh tv series to look as bright as in the cel drawings! OH WAIT OMGZ WHAT HAPPENED, HOW COME NO ONE TOLD ME THAT THE COLORS WILL BE FADED OUT AND NOT LOOK LIKE THE CELS! SO WE'RE STUCK WITH THIS DARK COLOR SCHEME? HUHUHU. please don't try to justify 2011's brighter color scheme using 1999's cel drawings because it's a dumb argument. don't also dare claim that the faded-out look was a complete accident because it wasn't. even if the cels are brighter than the final product, i'm quite sure the staff are AWARE of what the final look is and yet decided to proceed with it. so just stop making excuses. what matters is the final result, final result, FINAL RESULT.

I can't speak for everyone else, but I'd like to think that, like myself, when people praise the original anime's "darkness", they're referring to the presentation and lighting rather than the brightness level. Here's a clear cut comparison which should illustrate what I mean well enough:
Madhouse Version:
http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh230/liberal_degenerate/HorribleSubsHunterXHunter-20720pmkv_snapshot_1213_20120810_043634.jpg
Nippon Version:
http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh230/liberal_degenerate/30-KilluaxDropOutxTurnBackwithForcemkv_snapshot_0553_ 20120810_043813.jpg
As you can see, no original cel would change that clearly intentional artistic difference.
So yeah, the remastering thing does not undo what I liked about the way the original anime directed the material at all. The low brightness might indeed have been entirely accidental, but in the end it doesn't matter, because what made the original anime great was its intended stylistic choice to amp up the atmosphere with a distinct presentation and lighting.

i forgot to add, shinobi also seems to imply that the remastering thing is unique to hxh tv series which is why it is such an "accident."
uhm no, it's not. it's the NORM back then. if (http://jenn.rubberslug.com/gallery/inv_info.asp?ItemID=276746) you (http://jenn.rubberslug.com/gallery/inv_info.asp?ItemID=276751) look (http://animejewell.rubberslug.com/gallery/inv_info.asp?ItemID=93255) at (http://guardians.rubberslug.com/gallery/inv_info.asp?ItemID=289949) the (http://jenn.rubberslug.com/gallery/inv_info.asp?ItemID=180147) cels (http://jenn.rubberslug.com/gallery/inv_info.asp?ItemID=200603) of (http://jenn.rubberslug.com/gallery/inv_info.asp?ItemID=137764) other (http://jenn.rubberslug.com/gallery/inv_info.asp?ItemID=286103) 90s (http://jenn.rubberslug.com/gallery/inv_info.asp?ItemID=140869) series (http://jenn.rubberslug.com/gallery/inv_info.asp?ItemID=4226) they were also brighter than the final output. it was industry practice, the staff are aware of the final look of hxh tv series so no it wasn't an accident.
it's like make-up and photo shoot. it's a well-known fact that flash photography takes a way a certain % of the make-up color. so what do you when you're in a photoshoot? make the colors more vibrant than usual to capture your desired look. if you want bright pink, you make it really bright pink. if you want rich red, you spam yourself with a lot of redness to compensate for the loss of color due to flash.
it's the same here. experienced staff are aware of the remastering process. if they wanted the cels to look as bright as it is in the cel we see now, then they would have made the cels even brighter to compensate for the colors lost during remastering. (they're not dumb you know.) that's why i said what matters is the final result. no buts, no excuses.
but w/e, desperate argument is desperate.
That's about the only complain I've been making ever since episode 16:heh:

But the Greed Island OVAs use the exact same colors used on the cels--without the washed-out effect. It's obvious that those colors were what Nippon Animation intended. If the series had been remastered a la "Dragon Box (http://dragonball.wikia.com/wiki/Dragon_Box)," the result would end up looking just like those cels. Unfortunately, Nippon Animation got rid of all the cels prior to putting the episodes on DVD.

nice way of adapting the guresome scenes, not making them too graphic, yet you also know hwat happened they also reduced costs with that, and they need budget for the awesomeness to come.

Yeah, I'm a little astonished at how violent this episode turned out to be. I know they said they were increasing the level of violence for this arc but I didn't expect them to keep to their word. Color me pleasantly surprised, though!
On animation, I noticed that too. They took a lot of shortcuts here, and I'd like to imagine they're saving their budget up for a particular fight that shouldn't be too far ahead.

Man, I could watch a whole episode of the Phantom Troupe snarkily and nonchalantly going about its sinister business... and I basically just did, so, needless to say, very entertaining episode.
On a side note and to elaborate on something I'd said previously, Baise and the other bodyguard biting the dust here is the reason why their filler introductions and scenes annoyed me. They were never going to be important characters, so there was no need to dwell on them that much. But oh well, this episode was finally padding-free and obviously it was all the better for it.
Also, when I mentioned people should wait until we see an experienced Enhancer in action before judging as a handicapped Nen category of sorts, I can now mention that it was Uvogin I had in mind. His actions and badassery here speak for themselves. And thank god for the much needed reduced censorship. Hopefully it's here to stay.
Them getting a bit of spotlight was obviously meant to make their deaths more surprising.

Yes. As Endless says Uvogin is a great example of how enhancement does not limit you to close quarters combat. Enhancement doesn't just mean muscles are stronger and skin is tougher it is limitless based on your personal style and imagination of what to enhance. Think of anything you could use in a fight and then think of making it stronger and what you could do with it.
That's why kurapica was so desperately wanting to fall into the enhancement class.
What a pleasant surprise this episode turned out to be. Censorship went *poof*, eliminating one of my bigger pet peeves.
Hell, the 1999 version was a ton more censored compared to this.
Pleasant surprise indeed.
Also, someone is enjoying his job.

Great episode! But the animation, or lack of, left a bit of a sour taste. The episode didn't make as much of an impact as it should have because of it.

That was so much better than I ever expected this episode to be. 10/10. Uvogin is beastly! His expressions are wild; he acted as though he'd been raised among bears. The acting was fantastic as well...such a tribute to classic Shonen manga. I got Dragon Ball vibes.

Hunter x Hunter went from a cool story that I'd love to show my boys to an ultra violent murder-fest in the span of one episode! That was some great TV right there. I completely enjoyed it, though, I am sad to see some old friends enter the great beyond. *mourn*
This arc is what makes HxH one of the great series of all time. And, very soon Kurapika is going to find out who he is looking at, and then the beast is going to be unleashed.

-EPISODE 43-
Manga: Second half of chapter 73, most of chapter 75
Nippon's Adaptation: Episode 52, first half of episode 53
Nippon's adaptation have ruined the surprise by adding this scene

Blinky. Another name change by Viz and got carried here. The original name for the vacuum cleaner is Deme-chan. 出目-でめ-Deme means "Pop Eyed" and it's a type of Gold Fish (demekin to be exact) and we can see that on its design. (The googly eyes and the fish tail). So, Blinky isn't that incorrect, but it's still not an accurate localization of the name. But then again I don't know if they could use "Popeye".

What's with the shirt in tact anyways? Uvo's looks more manly w/o it...
That was my biggest disappoint ^
Thought the anime wasn't strongly censore, but with the manga comparison, I take that back lol
It's pretty obvious why they're keeping his shirt intact. It's so they can explain why no one immediately notices his spider tattoo. Come to think of it, this is actually a minor plothole in the manga.

Agreed. Some times - rarely - changes are made for the better. This is one of those times.
What a great episode this one was.
I have been a long time fan of this anime series. I even fought with the moderators years ago to grand this show its own forum, but alas, it seems that this series isn't very popular, which is a sad thing.

I have been following this forum for the past few days because I like the HxH discussions, and Shinobi's comparisons (since I never read the manga it's nice to see those things), and HxH is my favorite anime ever, and I only decided to register and join just now. This is the first time I joined a forum, this is great! Haha.
The Phantom Troupe are the greatest characters in the series. I've always loved them since the 1999 version. I loved this episode because of the action and all, but I felt like the first part was too sudden. Did anyone else feel the same way? I kinda liked how the 1999 anime built up the action, like those references to Neon's prophecies and the other Phantom Troupe's disguise. I'm also wondering why they didn't look for Tocino and Baise anymore.

Shizuku says "Deme-chan", it just gets translated by Horriblesubs- this has nothing to do with 2012 version, everything to do with the translators.

though i agree with you, that was a great build-up by 99. loved daltzorne quoting the prophecy as chopin's heroic played in the background
anyway another great episode. madhouse has revved it up starting ep 41 :)
Seriously? You don't think those deaths had more dramatic impact because they actually gave the characters a decent introduction?
good to know that first-time viewers got this impression. tbh, the filler introductions were actually one of the more entertaining scenes in ep 39. but i can't deny that madhouse's main purpose was really to pad the episode, based on the slow pace of the other scenes and the overabundance of flashbacks

I am a bit confused here. The spiders are A-class bounties. Surely there are wanted pictures of them since they don't bother to hide themselves. Why is it that Kurapica don't recognise them despite having access to hunter information? Wouldn't he have look up information on them the first opportunity he gets?
Also why did the vacuum cleaner girl bother to suck up the dead bodies? Does the vacuum cleaner need to eat or something?

Kurapika became a Hunter to take vengeance on the Phantom Troupe, a gang of thieves who massacred his clan. The Phantom Troupe sought out the Kurta Clan for their eyes, which turn scarlet when they get agitated. As has been said, the reason they don't bother to hide themselves is because no one who meets them to know who they are and survive to tell about it, let alone take a picture.

if you are going by they beign published in shonen magazines like this one, there are lots, specially old school, fist of the noth star, the JOJO series and even togashis's yu yu hakusho runned on shonned jump, and recently there was claymore or D-gray man, touhg these have been moved to a more mature but still shonen publication, still square enix probably is probably the one who publishes the most violent series under their shonen vairiations of gangan .

Seriously? You don't think those deaths had more dramatic impact because they actually gave the characters a decent introduction?
Not really, no. They already receive decent introductions in the meeting with Dalzollene and Kurapica (pretty much the same thing, saying their names and giving a demonstration of their Nen ability), so all those scenes did was needlessly introduce them twice. The "increased spotlight" didn't really add anything to their characters and instead simply slowed down the pace of the story. Excuse me for finding that waste of time to be a result of a need to extend the episode for the sake of it rather than a genuine desire to enhance the story.

Exactly. It's nice that some viewers were able to get something out of it, but the way that particular episode was handled in general makes it clear to me that the purpose of those scenes was to pad it. I mean, was there really a need to foreshadow the previous bodyguard who got turned into a live painting by showing him tied up and making him seem more important than he turned out to be? Again, extending the episode for the sake of it.
But whatever, people are free to speculate regardless, since author intent is not something us viewers can know for certain, and if some still got something out of those scenes, more power to them.
Also why did the vacuum cleaner girl bother to suck up the dead bodies?
Hiding the evidence? What to do with the body is one of the biggest hassles in assassinations, and Shizuku's ability is the perfect solution for it.
Hiding the evidence? What to do with the body is one of the biggest hassles in assassinations, and Shizuku's ability is the perfect solution for it.
Yeah. From what I think, the remains can tell the nature of deaths and can trace back to the killer's methods and/or abilities.
Hiding the evidence? What to do with the body is one of the biggest hassles in assassinations, and Shizuku's ability is the perfect solution for it.
It also lets them find out if anyone's still alive, so they can finish off the witnesses.

Known members: None
Known characteristics: Spider tattoo with a number on their backs
Threat Level: Ridiculous
Reward for dead member: 1 Zillion Jeni

"an incident somewhere" phantom troupe attack
Fighting happened
Uvogin : die...you you guys... Is that all..
Security guard A : what power... What the hell are you guys?
Security guard B : it doesn't matter who are they..they are just rat and thieves
Uvogin : we're the phantom troupe not just your ordinary rat and thieves
Franklin : we're not supposed to reveal our selves to them you know
Uvogin : it doesn't matter anyway..they're gonna die anyway
( smash the security guard head)
Feitan : ah the walkie talkie is on...they know our name now..
Uvogin : so what...everyone who stand in our way well just smash them all right..banchou
Chrollo : what's done is done...we're already know they gonna know about us soon or later anyway...so we just gonna need to destroy anyone that oppose us..
Uvogin : that's right..hahaha...

It is Han Megumi and Ise Mariya, the voice actresses for Gon and Killua, who create the Huncyclopedia segments. Well, not the animation itself of course, but they come up with the scenario and the lines, and then it is animated according to what they wrote. They do draw the whiteboard doodles themselves. They've talked about this in their weekly radio show and in a special 'behind the scenes' TV program about the new HxH anime.
So make of that what you want... XD

pure awesomeness.Yeah, the episode really was something amazing. I'm really looking forward to this, though damn this Phantom Troupe is scary as hell. I mean damn that guy beat 3 of them while immobilized from the neck down :heh:. Guess this proves that being a sadist isn't a good idea. Pure poison would have settled the fight. Of course even in that crazy business who would predict a guy who can spit a chunk of skull hard enough to penetrate brain, would bite someone's head in the first place, etc. A real monster in that case, and props to Kurapika for being able to pull off that capture.
Of course makes me rather worried hearing that condition. After all how does the technique decide who is a real member or not? Does it entirely depend on what Kurapika believes? Since right now makes you worried if Kurapika goes after Hisoka. Of course I suppose that level of danger was necessary to make chains powerful enough.
No idea how this will all go though. Have a super powerful group of thieves on the move and looking to recover their guy. Plus Gon has to get involved in this somehow :heh:.

Not a bad episode, but still I prefer the previous version of hxh. I speak about the Phantom Troup arc, because previous arcs were better in 2011 version in my opinion.
I don't know why but I prefer the previous design of Kurapika, he looks more angry and I prefer his previous seiyuu.
The production of the new serie is ok, but I'm not a fan of the soundtrack. It doesn't look epic at all. Except when the ending start, it's epic!
For example, I prefer the old version when Kurapika confine Uvo with his chains. Yeah the new version is more conform to the original, but I prefer the old version, dunno why. Maybe the soundtrack, and the tension.
Same goes to the moment when Kurapika uses his chain at the end of the episode. It was more epic in old version in my opinion. Kurapika looks (or his seiyuu) more angry.
In New version i really like when Kurapika says he doesn't care with his red eyes. It was epic!
Need next episode!

That Uvo is one scary guy!
It was awesome watching him fight.
Kurapika almost lost it there, but rushing in would just probably get him killed.
He's lucky the short guy managed to calm him down.
Looks like Kurapika has some interesting powers himself.
Re: Chain Jail
There's a bit of a duality concerning the restrictions people place on their abilities. The restriction itself (only using it on Spiders) wouldn't make it THAT much powerful. Putting his life on the line if he fails to uphold the restriction does increase its power by a noticeable amount, but there is an additional power boost coming from his conviction. You see, conviction and determination also has an effect on the power of an ability. The ability becomes powerful enough to keep in check one of the strongest Enhancers alive because his willingness to put his life on the line is proof of the fact that he WILL capture the Spiders, no matter the cost. This is why the ability is this powerful.
Re: Big Bang Impact
Yeah, it's basically a straight punch. But an explosion of this magnitude is nigh impossible to achieve, even for a master Enhancer. This just goes to show what kind of monster Uvogin actually is. It's my belief that the power is further fueled by the joy he takes in killing people with his bare hands, and his dedication to becoming the strongest physical fighter in the world (and he already is one of the strongest physical fighters).

Ahh right, how could I have forgotten lol xD.
You know, it's Gon and Killua's voice actors who choose the stuff that goes on Hunterpedia :heh:
Is that actually true? Maybe they're both fujoshi.
What does fujoshi mean?
This ep once again reinforces the notion of how battles are played out in HxH. Here, just like Hisoka in the Hisoka vs Gon battle, Uvo, though paralyzed, used his wits and surroundings to overcome the fight(though in Hisoka's case, using his wits and deception was not necessary), which is generally VERY rare for straight brawn-fighting guys like Uvo seems to be. I was very impressed =03.

I'm not sure if Ging is Gon dad anymore... Gon has a little Russia in him.
Maybe his mom is Russian? We literally know 0% about this person.

Kurapika being badass again.
I like him more than Gon even though Gon seems to be the main character. Gon is just a standard stubborn shonen protagonist.

Gon is much more of a psycho than Killua. Kurapika is the standard 'dark past' shounen character. He is the character from which Sasuke was born (though Sasuke also took on a lot of Killua's characteristics).
Gon, however, is a Goku that is made into an actual 3D character that creep the fuck out of everyone he meet- either that, or win them over (or both).
Killua is far more straight forward. He'll kill people, and he's up front about it.
Gon, on the other hand, acts "innocent" while being perfectly willing to snap an man's wrists with a smile, threaten to electrocute someone to death, and make them pass out in utter terror.
I don't think that he's actually killed anyone yet, but I've gotten far more "holy ****" moments from him than Killua. At least the people Killua has killed have (probably) deserved it.
Though I think it's only fitting how ****ed up the Phantom Troupe are, given how much carnage occured during the Hunter exam, and the people running that were, basically, the good guys. If the "good guys" were willing to do stuff that messed up, it makes sense for the actual villains to be far, far worse.

Oh, I see, thanks. I'm into shota, but only for the cuteness, nothing else.
I think I put this quite nicely a couple dozens of pages ago in my reply to the episode where he crushes Top Guy's peg leg:
See, this is why you do not piss of Gon.
I won't deny that Killua is the scary one. However, Gon is the dangerous one. This main difference between the two will be showing more and more as the story progresses.
Also, and this is based solely off this anime information, Killua is scary, but *wants* to be different.
Gon starts off really quite innocent, but is finding out the darker sides of himself (the parts that, for example, can be terrified by something, yet also find them strangely exciting). "Darker" may be overstating it a little, but I can't think of a better adjective right now.
In some ways, though, I can see Gon doing a lot more damage simply because he's less aware of himself and his differences from others. Killua is nothing but aware of those differences, but wants to join the larger world and fit in.

The scary part about Gon isn't that he is discovering darker parts of himself, it's that his good parts are the same as the scary parts. He is whole on his opinions/actions, and that's scary as shit.
Ah, yeah, that's a better way of putting it. I was trying to get at the same idea (I think), but from the point of the view of the audience. So maybe it would have been better if I'd said that the audience is getting a better idea of what his full personality entails. And really, it makes sense--I mean, most of us are a mixed bag, and very frequently, the better parts are inextricably linked the less desirable ones.
But without knowing more of the plot to come, it's hard for me to say for sure beyond just speculation. Anyway, I'm really excited for the next parts...

Gon is an eyesore who should be removed from the show altogether. Finally finished watching all the old stuff and there are not enough words to describe how much I want the guy to suffer -_-
His selfishness and idiocy has no boundaries.
Will finally start 2011 version. Looks like my fave arc is up now, go Kurapika!
The old anime didn't really "get" Gon's character. They made him a bit more generic and played up his innocent insight a bit much. Killua was also a bit more generic. I think Kurapica was the only character that the extra characterization in the first anime did much justice to.

yeah, there seems to be something called 24 hour television on ntv in HxH timeslot.
Shinobi is talking about last week's episode though.
even the anime version is not immune to the Hiatus X Hiatus joke of the manga
i hope next weeks episode will be awesome
Next episode is Kurapica VS Uvogin. How can it not be awesome?

-EPISODE 44-
Manga: last part of chapter 75, chapter 76 and first half of chapter 77
Nippon’s Adaptation: Second half of episode 53, first third of episode 54
Episode starts with more Uvo madness

In the manga the Troupe members are already playing cards. In Nippon’s adaptation they started earlier. Here, Shalnark tells Uvo of the arrivalof the Shadow Beasts and then they play.

More toned down violence again. Worm’s bones were sticking out of his fingers after punching Uvo in the manga. The bones did not stick out in either adaptations, however, Worm’s hand was twitching in Madhouse’s adaptation.

Here in the manga, Worm’s eye flew off his face after the punch. In Madhouse’s adaptation the eye popped off but didn’t fly. In Nippon’s adaptation the punch came straight forward and therefore the eye didn’t pop out nor were the teeth shattered.

Uvogin (Enhancer)
His only interests are strength training and winning street fights. He focuses his entire aura into his fist to produce his Big Bang Impact, which has the destructive force of a small missile. His goal is to hone his punch until it creates a blast equivalent to a nuclear bomb.

The bite scene surprisingly came in a direct view and unaltered despite its gory nature!! The only thing different is not seeing a part of his brain in his head and the blood coming out of him when he falls down! The guards discussion scene was moved before the troupe discussing Uvo’s situation and how to treat him in both adaptations. In Madhouse’s adaptation Kurapika was more rebellious towards Dalzollen. In Nippon’s adaptation the argument was somewhat between her and Squala.

Nippon’s adaptation gives us the build up for Uvo’s capturing which in my opinion ruins the element of surprise.

Do you know how the middle finger is considered an insult?!:naughty:
In the manga, Worm reappears to ask for help from the rest of the Shadow Beasts before Kurapika’s move. Here, it’s after capturing Uvo. This scene was omitted in Nippon’s adaptation.

A short filler scene of Chrollo getting updated on the situation. This was another scene in the manga and it’ll be in the next episode and therefore I’m not gonna talk about it at the moment.

Kurapika’s chains in the manga got bigger in this scene. In both adaptations they remained in their original size.

Uvo foaming was also in the manga (Note the missing chains around Uvo’s neck in Madhouse’s adaptation)

After seeing this episode and the previous one, I can say the Madhouse did keep their promise by making this arc different in tone compared to the previous arc. What we saw of darkness and gore was totally unexpected and we didn’t think they’d be able to pull it off! Rest assured, the series is in good hands, and let the haters eat their hearts out!

Hunter pulled in a 4.0 last week. Nice.

no hunter this week? why??
4.0? What's that?
It's the show viewership rating for the week. 4.0 is pretty damned nice. :D
I thought it was already established that as far as the actual TV ratings are concerned, HxH was like the greatest thing since sliced bread and One Piece. (slightly exaggerated, I mean it was doing pretty well for itself)

Not necessairly, the ratings have been kinda mixed for it's timeslot. Although since it's definently going past that initial 45 episode count and we're getting a movie it's doing pretty well for itself. Hopefully by the time we get to later arcs the ratings will be more consistent/

I have finally watched the first 9 episode of this new release and I'm actually enjoying it.
This version goes straight to the point instead of playing around for ages. It took me a while until original series finally got my full attention while here they have it from the start.
Yes some things are missed and rushed but they still cover the main points and give an over all idea.
Some scenes were done better here while some better in old version. You can;t expect them to be equal especially since so far it is a recap.
Let's remember FMA: Brotherhood series. First 10 recap episodes were meh, I was very tempted to drop it all together after episode 2.
Problem with HxH is that there is a lot of recap material. But so far everything is done pretty decent. Did not read the manga so can't compare but in comparison to original series it is not that bad.
My real judgement will be done when I'll reach Phantom arc which is one of the best anime arcs I've seen so far.

finally it was a long wait, the episode managed to keep a great feel of tension thats on par any good mystery anime, this series keeps amazing me since this arc started, and more amazed how they have been broadcasting this anime at sunday morning with this content, not that i have a problem with that.

So the big fight will start at episode 47 no? If we look at the preview of episode 46...
About episode 45, it was an ok episode.
I think that they extend some moments, but well...
Nothing more to say. Ah the place where Kurapika and Hisoka meet isn't the same in manga/previous anime but it's cool too.

45 came out and geez, is the guy the Hulk or something? Busting all those chains and metal restraints like paper.
Love the part where he use his head to pop the metal panel, holding door.
that Hisoka will betray his group just to fight someone strong lol what a PsychoPath dude Hisoka is

Great atmospherics this week. I loved the dialogue-free scene where Kurapika is out in the hallway, and Melody comes out and stares at him. He gives her what I can only describe as a heartbreaking smile - a clue that his soul hasn't totally been consumed by hate yet.
The other great scene is the one between Hisoka and Chrollo "Up to some mischief? But of course!" leading to that scene with Kurapika at the fabulously creepy derelict amusement park. Hisoka in all his perverted, creepy glory.

and here i thought a huge fight gonna unravel...so two or three episode after this?
If we're lucky, they'll brush the start of the fight near the end of the next episode.
By the way, has it been mentioned that that Plot Armor is a very rare commodity in this story?

Comparison is coming up, but first a correction in episode 42 comparison (http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?p=4291086#post4291086):
Leoreo's knowledge, or should I say ignorance about nen got extended a bit with a part from chapter 76. That part in Nippon's adaption was not adapted well as seen in episode 54. Especially when they didn't even show Leoreo in that scene.

Kurapika has started his revenge.
Owl is an interesting one.
His ability explains how the treasure vanished and no one could figure out how.
Interrogating Uvo was kinda easy, but that's just probably 'cause he had the upper hand.
Things are getting interesting.
