It appears to be a multiplayer side-scrolling beat-em-up, though I'm not entirely sure that's what it is.

Considering it is Tasogare Frontier behind this game, it will be a good pack of fun (and great OST).

Likely something between Capcom's Alien vs Predator and SNK's Metal Slug.

I'd rather wait until an officially licensed game for consoles/handhelds comes along. Considering the series' popularity it's going to be inevitable.

Though since Sakuya's a boss, does that mean she's unplayable?

I assume soul limit is how much power you can use, while it does look like a multiplayer game since there are player scores and you can play solo. Also I think Sayaka is going to be playable since we do see her in viewable with the other girls.

I don't own a PSP. I don't plan on ever buying one. So, I don't care.

And in contrast... 3 more days for the doujin game?! I never anticipated a doujin game ever before.

I assume everyone have their own ways and anticipation for any games :)
Ever it's for Computer to play at home or at office, or to play everywhere with portable.
So every game count anyway, whatever it"s official or doujin game :)

Still good to share the info and news about any :)
Not just purchasing official product or depending on doujin^^

Great game! I need to get people to play multi.

My first play reminds me something. I played as Mami-san and defeated all the witches. But perished fighting the final boss. Then Madoka avenged her dearest Mami-san!
I was sooo close. Mami-saaaaaan! ;_;

Alright so after finishing the first lap of the game, this is how I see the combat strength of the girls.

Sayaka and Kyouko are the easiest characters to play with, with Sayaka having a rapid but powerful normal attack, with good aerial uppercut and aerial dive attacks. The charge special isn't particularly useful, but thats not an issue since Sayaka has a good normal attack. Kyouko's melee attacks have great range, and her uppercut and signature aerial dive do tons of damage. Her special, forming a barrier that damages enemies that touch it, isn't particularly useful either, but her high dmg and long melee range more than makes up for it.

Mami is an interesting character to play as. Her normal attack isn't so bad, does medium damage, but requires you to be in medium range of enemies. Her Unlimited Musket Works is useful if you have time to charge it, and her gun-kata move does good amount of damage and knocks enemies back. Her ribbon attack can be used to chain with her barrage arm attack. Her Tiro Finale is the most powerful special of all the girls, doing a shitload of damage that can whittle down a boss' health fast, but you have to be careful with it to avoid losing too much Soul limit.

Homura is a bit hard to control. Her normal pistol attack does low damage, but her LMG has fast fire rate useful against groups in front of you. Her rocket launcher is also great for dealing high damage against enemies in front of you. Her mortar is useful against airborn enemies and also do a ton of damage. Her pipe bombs are great defensively when enemies get too close and you need to make room while dealing damage at the same time. Her time control is a bit useful. It could be used to reposition yourself, but you only have a couple of seconds to pull off some attacks before time returns.

Madoka to me is arguably a bit overpowered. Her moveset is limited, but more powerful in general. She can either charge her shot and shoot a flurry of arrows, or shoot one big arrow. A charged big arrow does a ton of damage, and it also knocks enemies back giving you room. She also has the ability to charge her shots in midair, effectively levitating, which can be useful. What makes Madoka pretty powerful is her special, in which she calls an arrow storm at her location that covers a good amount of the screen and does a shitload of damage. Spamming arrowstorm when fighting Walburger Night makes the fight really really easy. Other than that, Madoka also has the ability to aim diagonally up and down, which Homura and Mami can't.

So yea thats my analysis of the character abilities :heh: Game is great, really short, but fun!

2nd lap thoughts-- your levels are back to 1. I think your starting soul limit is lower. Enemies are higher level and attack more often but grant more XP.

Yea it gets harder the more laps you complete. Octavia is a bit tough boss if you're soloing it, unless you play Madoka in which you can just arrow storm spam :heh:

Yeah you pretty much nailed everything in your analysis, nice job lol. I'm sure you know already but Mami's gun arm attack and ribbon act as diagonal shots up and down, and Homura's bombs- the ones she throws (in the air and to the ground), as well as the mortar cannon work really well as diagonal shots. I think they balanced out all the characters pretty well to be honest.

I somehow managed to get pretty beast with Homura. She's not even my favorite character but her speed makes things really fun. Memorize her moves and be quick with your inputs and you're good to go :P

So now.... second lap, let's go! :)

Finished the third lap with Sayaka. It got a bit hectic at the end, but it turns out WN's fire breath has a roughly double jump-over-able hitbox. So it turns out finishing the third unlocks laps 6-10 :uhoh:.

Just finished playing through my second lap and the game is a lot of fun. Glad they have a config for gamepads as well since it makes the controls a lot smoother.

By the way it's probably too early to hope for, but has anyone started working on translating any of the trophies? I've gotten 5 or 6 of them so far and want to work on getting some more. :p

Locally. Just access the Config file and mapping the key for player 2 and 3, then when you are in character selecting screen, those 2 players only need to press the confirm button to join the game.

Well, had a lot of fun when playing with my friends. It's kinda chaotic and the bosses are easy with 3 players. Game is short, though.

For those who want to face Oktavia, I'd recommend grinding some levels in the normal stages first. Oktavia is always Lv35 no matter when you face her. She's available whenever Sayaka dies, so get some levels in first.

Long range is recommended, unless you want to get one-shotted by her sword slam.

If only there's a way to save my progress..

The game autosaves when you beat a lap.

Also to everyone, some cool facts.

When you beat your first lap, you then can start from the 5th lap. Beat the 5th lap, and you can play the 26th lap. Beat the 26th lap, then you can play the 677th lap. And from 677th lap....to 2602nd lap...

From the 26th lap on, enemies have a lot more health and they will ALWAYS one-shot kill you, no exceptions. Boss fights are of course much much harder.

The 677th lap is ridiculous. I saw a stream of 3 people playing it with Madoka, Homu, and Kyouko. Enemies have a ridiculous amount of health to the point that bigger enemies take like 5 minutes of constant juggling before they die. Gertrud has such a massive amount of health that even after 10 minutes of time stopping and arrow storm spamming, Gertrud's health bar barely budges. Pretty much to survive these high laps, you need Homura. Her timestop is key to survival and there's absolutely no chance of success without her.

Somehow i saw a picture in /jp/ and apparently someone completed it and that unlocks the 2602nd lap...It might be a photoshop, but if its real, I can't even imagine how difficult that is.

To those wondering how the lap unlocking works, there is a formula.

It goes by this: x^2 + 1 = c

So 1st lap = 1^2 + 1 = 2. Unlocks up to 2nd lap

2nd lap = 2^2 + 1 = 5. Unlocks up to 5th lap

5th lap = 5^2 + 1 = 26. Unlocks up to 26th lap

And so on and so forth. There seems to be no limit to the highest lap you can get.

And of course, the game gets progressively harder the higher you go.

Saw someone stream a fight with Oktavia at lvl 1000ish. Its so fucking ridiculous :heh:

Something quick I just made up
A little review and some opinion about the characters.

Akemi Homura: "TOKI WO TOMARE"
With her Time Stop Special you can think of a lot variation of spamming her attacks on the screen. Sadly she has the least Soul Limit count. Using her Special for escape purpose gives you the mind set to play safe.

Kyouko Sakura: "Crowd Control Meister"
Her normal and especially her strong attack safely covers in all specific directions.
At first I found her special to be useless but found out that it was to help her safely charge her Strong Attack.

Kaname Madoka: "Boss Killer"
Oh please don't tell me I'm not the only one who thinks she's like Rockman. Her Normal Attack is chargeable and can focus to one of 3 directions. While her Strong Attack is an effective Straight line penetrating single arrow shot. I dubbed her as a boss killer for her low cost Arrow Shower special.

Mami Tomoe: "Tricky Elegance"
The trickiest character in my opinion. I can only think of her forward [X] as her strongest trait. While her normal acts as both melee and mid range attack. She has the most double edge special though I can say it has the largest screen coverage attack.

Sayaka Miki: "Blue Saber"
Agile and mobility is her best asset while her attacks only focus in a minimal range but thanks to her moveset she dance and fight her enemies. My fingers are stressed using her really... If used wisely you can finish a stage with less soul consumption.

zato_1one
2011-08-15, 03:59
After defeating lap 26, I confirm HomuHomu is the best Meduka. :heh: She has everything to control the situation. The only down point is that she has the lowest soul limit which can easily KO you in higher lap. This game is so much fun, I wish that Tasofro will release an update for more stage and may be more character (Megane-HomuHomu and Homura with bow) in the future. :D

I do want to support the developers. This game deserve it. Does Tasofro sell their game via online?

I'm just not good with Mami. I just hate her move set, not enough range and her melee just isn't that good either.

Who do you guys think is best for WN? I tried Homura but I died a lot to the random stuff before the fight so I didn't get to her in good condition.

Edit: Nm used Madoka and got it pretty easily, her special is kind of OP.

Riga92
2011-08-15, 17:28
Once you learn how to do mortar/grenade spam and rocket canceling with Homura, she is pretty powerful. Walburger Night is also the easiest boss in the game. Pretty easy to dodge everything, especially with Homura.

Also, the best way to play as Mami is to jump cancel her forward strong attack and up strong attack. She's still the hardest character to use but she becomes a lot more effective using cancels.

dr_marronflower

I like to use Mami. She's tricky to use, and one must be extra careful, deaths consume a lot of Soul Power. But she's great for juggling the enemies. And the full charged unlimited flintlocks works deals quite a punch.
I used to keep diying in WN, but's my fault, not Mami. Syndrome of Im-gonna-win-yeah!-crap-I-did-something-really-stupid-like-falling-in-the-hole! ><

ChronoReverse
2011-08-16, 01:13
Interestingly enough, once you get to Lap 677, Mami is more easy to use than Kyouko or Sayaka.

Because everything kills you with one hit (I've seen 1500 damage) getting up close and personal is extremely dangerous.

Because it literally takes two minutes of continuous attacks just to kill the very first enemy you see, fighting up close is a good way to die.

Therefore, the ranged characters become far more effective simply because you can continuously keep the enemies at range and just hit them until they finally die.

So what's the highest level you guys beat? I stopped at 677th playing with my friends. HomuMado combo really is key. Homu timestops, Mado spams 2-3 arrow storms at once. Will try the 2000 the next time I meet them again.

Kyouko is super crowd killer, along with Sayaka and her Nova Strike or whatever her special dash attack is called. Still can't grasp Mami though.

If I had someone to partner with me to play Homura while I played Madoka (or vice versa), I'm convinced Lap 677 is entirely doable.

It would take a lot of care to not get plastered accidentally but the two cover each other's weaknesses very well.

If I had to take a third, I'd take Kyouko since her barrier is useful for knocking back enemies plus she has excellent short-ranged crowd control.

Although She is a rifle user, she plays like a shotgun user :heh: in short-medium range. Pretty similar to Sayaka, especially both of them could jump over enemies, which is very useful in fighting bosses. Just jump over their back, and attack all the way we like.

Although I also agree that she felt kinda inferior compared to other girls. Her damage is so-so, her range is short, and she doesn't have that much health. Her charged rifle attack takes long time to charge fully, the damage isn't that great, and the range is short compared to Madoka's arrow and similar charged long-range attack.

But really, despite all of that, I find her to be the most enjoyable to use :p It just takes some time to get accustomed to her :)

Er... sorry. I was a bit "drunk" when I type this. What I meant is I unlocked 677, not beat it. Sorry again.

So what happens if everyone dies? Will Kyubey come out instead?

Translations:

- Bug fixes: lap 100 all clear, others?

New character: Another Akemi Homura
Different moveset, stat progression is the same(?). To use her, select Homura and press Up.

New character: Kyubey
If you have more players than surviving player characters, the others can play as Kyubey. (?)

Now playing as Moemura is pretty fun. She's not as powerful as regular Homura, but still very useful.

Her normal attack is now a melee attack with her signature golf club. Doesn't pack to much punch, but satisfying nonetheless :D

Her up attack is now only pipe bombs, no mortars, and her down strong is the same as well, except for one difference. The pipe bombs are larger, take a little longer to explode, they don't explode on contact, and you can also take damage from your own pipe bombs.

Moemura's standing strong consist of charging her desert eagle shot. It's essentially Madoka's strong arrow charged. It knocks enemies far back.

Now Moemura's strongest, and best attack. Her forward strong consist of using the shotgun she stole in episode 10, and boy is it powerful. The spread is wide, but the knockback is POWERFUL. If up close, it does a ton of damage too, as expected from a shotgun. Jump canceling her forward strong is what makes her strong.

And of course, Moemura retains her timestop like her Hommando counterpart. Both Homura's have the exact same stats and level up the same. Just different movesets. Moemura is a harder character to use, and Homura is still the better character, but Moemura sure is fun to play :D

EDIT: Some things I just discovered. You can actually hit the pipe bombs like they are golf balls with your golf. They will explode on contact with enemies and they do high damage.

I was just messing around on a lower lap with her and it's fun to spam a few bombs and then freeze time and hit them all at once.

I noticed on the wiki, in the FAQ section, they mention changing the BGM. Could someone explain that, please?

I was hoping the patch would have more fix (crash, stability, and so on) :heh: but a moemura would do :D

I completed 101th lap, but never found any freezing, it's just sometimes the program crashed after playing for a while.

Supposedly netplay may be added which would be awesome.

I just hope they add Netplay... I'm only able to play with friends on Tuesdays and Fridays at youth group... If they show up that is :dots:

An unofficial netplay patch has been released from 2ch! Link to patch here: http://www1.axfc.net/uploader/File/so/69605&key=gso

Follow these instructions to netplay:

1. Backup your save file and the main game exe. Readme says to do so in case of corruption.
2. Extract the zip into your Grief Syndrome directory
3. Run GSOnline. The host will need a port open (I put the port into the box ahead of time then hit the host button but I'm not sure if this is required) then clients will need to put the host's ip and the port.
4. After everyone's connected, press the Grief Syndrome button on the netplay program.

All players will use the controls set to their player one. Also for port, I used 6112 (the battle.net port since I already had it open). Only the host needs the port open and Hamachi does work for this. Just so everyone knows, the patch is kinda buggy and the netplay is also barely playable, as it is very laggy.

If it's that bad, I think I'll wait for an official patch.

About the lag, it actually depends on who you play with. With one of my friends, the framerate was so smooth that the game actually played FASTER than when I play alone.

That makes no sense...

I know it doesn't, but trust me on this. If you play with the right person, the fps will be insanely high which makes the game so intense.

Do anyone use Linux here? I tried using this game with Wine but I get some z-buffering problems.

A little regret in not playing the game sooner. It's a lot of fun.

My favourite characters are Madoka, Kyouko and glasses Homu. Glasses Homu is fun and challenging to use. Died a lot at first with glasses Homu.. until I realized the pipe bombs can be thrown near or among groups of enemies and then exploded with the shotgun - it took some practice, but doing that helped me surive longer when going solo with her.

At the higher laps you can die from time running out when you and your comrades wail on a single enemy that refuses to die....

Is there a way to "save" progress?

You see due to some compatibility issues, Grief Syndrome plays slow on my laptop. So I play in my office PC.

I just want to ask how to fix the save game issues because if I go back to the menu it starts off again :(
