I have not a single clue but some quality people doing this one. Everything really blends good with each other. Nothing sparkly over the top, very condensed.
I'm already impatient to see how plummy girl gonna turn out. Deviant, air-head, sceming? Kaori doing good for newcommer thought she is more idoltype; may say I would prefer her over Yui.

Ahaha Madoka is female Takuto from Star Driver. :heh: I like this show and I hope it's not monster robot of the week thing.
Ah Madoka...she is such a Maru Sue.

I found the second to be really enjoyable, and I look forward to seeing Lan pilot her robot. I think Lan might be my favorite out of the trio shown in the OP; her hairstyle reminds me of Kaine from Nier, and I loved Kaine’s character design so yeah. xD
I love these physics!

Physics doesn't apply in Anime~ We've been taught this multiple times.
It's made of light-imposible-etium, it actually has negative weight! If not for the pilot it would float into space. j/k
I like how it's perpetually stuck in that position as if it suffers from catatonic schizophrenia. It's probably somewhere in the HQ still in that position, balanced on it's own head...

Rather enjoyed episode 02 of Blue Genesis Largrange.
First I am really loving Madoka's onee-chan. That was one of the best Bright Slaps I have seen. ^_^
Also that base's security sucks. It took until she was practically standing in from of the NERV bridge to call Madoka that they noticed she was there.
So the key to Madoka kicking ass is being excited and motivated since the Vox control system seems to be partly in the least emotionally based. I rather like that idea.
Heh, still loving Madoka's and Lan's chemistry together. So poor Lan apparently can't use her Vox to its full ability and Moid thinks its because of some legend about the Vox she fears. That in turn is putting more pressure on her because Madoka has to fight alone so far.
Speaking of Moid, who else thinks what while he might not actually be the big bad of the series, he will at least be the Ikari Gendou?
Muginami looks like she is going to be really fun, though I wonder if she is as air headed in battle?
Anyway next week looks like Madoka's battle with APB 02 and 03 is going to go to the ground and Madoka is going to continue being the battle pragmatist (looks like she is going to start hitting the APBs with bits of Kamogawa). From the title and the previews, its looks like Lan is going to get over her fears and doubts and come roaring to the rescue of Madoka.

So Madoka's, Lan's, and Muginami's plug Vox suits are solid one pieces when they are not in the cockpits I am guessing. I really can't wait to see Lan in action next week, I think she might actually be my favorite character too.

This series / episode is pretty amuse to watch, because of the random jokes over the entire series / episode.
The part where Madoka searches for cellphone signal and the phone conversation between herself and her cousin (sister?) are the funniest part on this episode.
Also, I laughed for a while after hearing the voice of Menma (Kayano Ai) as the 3rd pilot of the squad, Muginami. Somehow I feel like Menma is reborned to Muginami. (after N amount of years) :heh:

One question about the Viz's streaming: How do you feel about them subbing Madoka's signature "Maru" as "Perfect?" I'm assuming they are going for an equivalent to the meaning she is using, which is "correct."
^Actually I kinda assumed her "Maru" as something like "Victory!" or "Alright!" or "Success!" anything that exclaimes a success.

Director Sato Tatsuo tweeted that he has excluded all the romance elements from Moretsu Pirates and Rinne no Lagrange. He said it's an experimental approach to compose the scrips focusing on the friendships without romance, but he believes something unexpected will be created in such an old fashioned way.

No, no, no... after the 2ch calmed down, the Yuri fans are actually hopeful - now that Tatsuo Satoh made clear that romance is excluded in the two anime he directed this season (Chief Director for Rinne no Lagrange, Director for Moretsu Space Pirate), it actually means yuri is more likely rather than the other way round, because in anime yuri is rarely shown explicitly as such (what happens in Nanoha, Madoka or even "Maria-sama miteiru" is depicted as deep friendship and bonding, but is interpreted by many from yuri angle anyway). Getting rid of the possibility of the three guy "villains" of taking the three female protagonists as love interests in Rinne means the bonding between the three girls will get more focus and make it easier for yuri fans to fantasize about yuri (because no guy is involved now). In fact, some suspected the discussion of why there are 3 guys on the other side that seems to conveniently match the 3 girls on Earth's side may have prompted Satoh to quench any speculation about love and romance will become the main theme in the coming episodes. Needless to say, I am quite hopeful too (being a yuri fan myself) :-)

Well fingers crossed. I was thinking "old fashioned" in the translated tweet could have been synonymous with unconventional in this case.
Seriously the signals having been flashing all through out the first two eps especially from Lan. When you factor in that there is literally one guy for each of the girls, bishounen no less, it would just make any possible relationship between Madoka and Lan the more sweeter. Personally what would have been the icing on the cake was if Madoka wasn't at an all girls school.
Normally i'm not one to care so much about the romantic elements of an anime but Lan x Madoka rubbed me the right way and the set up seems perfect for it. If nothing happens in S1 then hopefully S2.

First I'm extremely happy that one thing I worried most about this series, it that they would jam the APB's with Madoka, Lan, and Muginami, will not happen. While I am disappointed that the show may not explicitly go to cannon Madoka X Lan, I'm hopeful that at the very least we will get something on the levels of the relationship between Nanoha/Fate. I also hope that like ImagineThat, that maybe we will get unconventional love in this story.

I am completely fine with that couse of events because: Yaoi doesn't bother me. It will help eliminate the threat of them pairing up the guys with Madoka, Lan, and Muginami and there by protecting the Yuri.

That would actualy be a great thing if Yuri and Yaoi fandoms could join forces to get better series for both.
Also why would there be fan art wars? Wouldn't it be in the best interest of the Yuri and Yaoi fandoms to support each other against the hetero pairings.
most importantly he is the dirctor, he isn't the writer of the series...
The director generaly can guide the writer in a direction he wants the writer to go.
For exemple in Ano Hana director Nagai had Okada do rewrites because he wasn't satisfied with early versions of the script.
So if he doesn't really want romance I guess he told the writing staff to not put any.
edit:
I'm surprised nobody has brought up the preview at the end of episode 1
"What do you want to go eat Lan?"
"I want a bento prepared by a loving wife"
"I'm not a loving wife"
"you're not?"
"I don't think....actualy,absolutely not"
So I think there'll be Yuri but like djmaca said Madoka will be clueless about it.

Well, by fan art wars, I just meant that you'd see massive amounts of yuri and yaoi fan-art resulting from it, and it would be interesting to see which type of the two would end up dominating. I'm not saying that the two sides would necessarily try to "outdo" one another. It would just seem like a competition based on how much artwork both sides would put out.

Ahh Madoka, you have yet to seize my smile whenever you act goofy and wild in situations that are meant to be serious, but thats what I love about you :p
As soon as that guy told Madoka "The future of our planet rests in our hands" I immediately thought "Thats a lot of pressure to put on her!" and right after, Madoka said "I can't handle the kind of pressure right now!" I snickered quite a lot after that :heh:
It was pretty stupid to put that much pressure on her right at the beginning. It caused trouble for her, beginning to soubt herself, and without her cousin's pep talk, she would've been in serious trouble.
I wonder who that girl was that Madoka ran into in the hangers. They were both lost, but the blonde haired girl seemed less worried XD As for Lan, it appears she wants to be more help towards Madoka. It was actually quite surprising to to her begin to tear up since from what we have so from her so far, she''s pretty emotionless. Aww Lan, you big softy ;) However, I guess something happened to Lan since she was stopped by that guy and he mentioned that she may not be able to accept the Vox in her current state.
You could clearly see how Lan was surprised at how easily Madoka could pilot her Vox mech. It seems she still has problems there, but Madoka can probably help her there.
In the end, all it took was Madoka's cousin to annoy her to the point that she would want to beat something up, thats a perfectly reasonable way to get the robot moving :heh: But, to her misfortunes, it appears that it is a handicap match now (Sorry, after that superplex from last episode, I can't help but use wrestling terms for this anime now :heh: )
Good overall, we learned a bit more about Madoka.
Lan will probably overcome her reservations to get out there with her Vox and help Madoka.
The enemy waiting for the conversation to end before he bothered to attack proves that the enemy aren't bad people, but are just in a bad position. How unfortunate!
No, that's not it at all. He didn't care about her call and continued to approach her all the time. He just didn't attack her because there was no point, seeing that her mech was powered down. He talked with that other guy beforehand that they want to seize the Vox mechs for themselves, so for that it's best if they only attack (and possibly damage) the Vox mech as little as possible.
I love these physics!

I think the helicopters are only there for guiding it - they obviously can't carry it like that.
Very good observations. I strongly agree with all three, and I do think they help the show a lot. The mecha and tightsuits in particular could not be designed any better, imo. The tightsuits do indeed hit just the right balance.
Yes, the tightsuits are very well designed indeed :D

No problem with any Yaoi either, as it makes the road clear for the Yuri! :D
Whats this, a show with great potential might focus on its plot? Heaven forbid.
Its not like there will not be doujinshi to fill your desires.
Yuri please... but watch the yaoi: I'm allergic to the stuff.
As line it is completely platonic I am absolutely ok with this announcement. If not well...

So,........I will watch this show for the sake of Madoka. ^^ (and story, of course)

What happened was Madoka started to get unsure of herself, and since the control system seems to be partly based on the pilot emotions, the Vox shut down because of it. Remember after Yoko's Bright Slap Madoka got fired up again. Which rebooted the Vox system, and then allowed her to toss APB-02.

It may come as a surprise to a lot of posters, but when it comes to anime I really don't expect or ask for all that much anymore. Honestly the bare minimum that I ask for is that a show not meander and waste time, not be boring with it's subject material and not pander too blatantly and aggressively to that certain subsect of fans in Japan who share nothing in the way of common interest with me...oh that and too have a good solid mecha TV series at least once or twice a year.
Lately this has been something of a problem, because other than the Sunrise stuff I feel that the industry has been dropping the ball in a huge way lately when it comes to mecha/sci-fi shows and leaving me extremely disappointed. When I look back, realistically I don't think there has been a good non-Sunrise produced mecha TV series since around 2009 when we had Shin Mazinger. I had placed a lot of faith in both Star Driver and then Guilty Crown based on the trailers at least making it look like they would have solid mecha action only to have both shows blow up in my face by in Star Drivers case wasting epic amounts of time on high school bullshit all throughout the entire show and ultimately suffering from repetitive and formulaic battle engagments that would last 2-3 minutes and a plot that went all over the place episode to episode and then eventually nowhere. In Guilty Crown's case I was forced to endure an incredibly unsympathetic cast and a plot that seems to be making an outright mockery of any faith anybody might have placed in it AND the mecha aspect actually turned out to be barely there at all.
Needless to say as a result of all the crushing disappointment I've faced I was a little hesistant to put too much faith into the sci-fi shows that are airing this season, even though it feels like this should be my time and have been approaching the shows I've watched this season with a bit of a sarcastic hopeless attitude, but Rinne no Lagrange's second episode have given me reason to hope again, even if just a little that I can finally have a decent mecha show that carries the spirit I've come to expect from the genre throughout it's 80's and 90's incarnations to go along with Gundam AGE. Here's just a few small reasons why I kind of have hope and feel that Rinne no Lagrange has the best chance of being the first non-Sunrise mech show in a while to not suck and leave me completely unfulfilled:
An opening that actually seems related to the show and on top of that is pretty good and catchy. Plus 1 on the effort front for the overall sound/music production as well Likeable characters as opposed to dull caricatures that seem to have clear cut personalities and motivations that are being built upon even in the first two episodes. Shows like Star Driver and Guilty Crown have had a bad habit of leaving their early runs devoid of much plot progression and character development such that they've struggled for the rest of their runs for it in trying to make up for lost time and defining what exactly each characters role and personality is supposed to be and keeping their actions within the confines of said role and personality. Please anime industry, maybe take something from the way Rinne is handling itself and stop wasting so much bloody time early in shows runs Actual focus on mecha battles. Like holy smokes really?! :twitch: we get to see 2 pretty good looking sorties 2 episodes in a row complete with the gorgeous battle over the sparkling sea in the latest one. This shouldn't be this hard and should be something one would just expect out of a mecha show so I don't know why it took so long to see something like this again. Maintaining focus between episodes, again something that shows like Guilty Crown and Star Driver struggled with mightily. Those shows didn't have much in the way of connectivity between episodes, but here one of the first shots we see is Madoka bringing the Vox Aura back into the hangar and then going for a mission debriefing and pinch me...the plot actually continues from where it left off last episode and the alien dude goes to look for his missing comrade which leads to a battle AND there's even foreshadowing about the nature of the conflict and that the Japanese military may be fighting a proxy war for some alien race that isn't quite on the level with them. No effort to keep the viewer completely in the dark assumedly because the writers don't want to lock themselves down a certain path early on here....it's like they may have actually though their plot out ahead of time 0.o 24 episodes to work with. Not 12, not 21, not 22.....24! Granted Star Driver had 25 episodes and could barely manage to fill them with enough content for a 6 episode OVA, but considering Rinne is light years ahead of where that show was even 10 episodes in by it's second episode in terms of plot exposition I'm thinking that might not be a problem barring some epic time wasting during the middle which is always a possibility Sharing the same name as a pretty epic hockey player is never a bad thing. Triple_R probably knows what I'm talking about :D
Like I said before, Madoka is the anti-Shinji.:D
Maybe I'm overstating this, but this show is one of the many bottles of morale-boosting tonic that Japan needs in these trying times; makes you feel real good, from start to finish. :)

Episode 2:
- The OP and ED in this series still classy stuff 2 episodes in. Seriously, I still find it hard to believe this show is actually animated at XEBEC. A good use of color palette and typography made all the differences between this and something like Softenni.
- The alien enemy guys are unfortunately, the stereotypical "I wish I was anywhere but here", "I lean on walls because I'm too lazy to stand like a proper person" teenagers. Hope they'll get better later on, and probably get befriended.
- And where are the other personnels on their ship? Ah, I guess that explains the guys crankiness.
- Always like seeing futuristic gadgets in anime. Madoka's cellphone interface reminds me of the modern smartphone UIs like iOS or Android. One problem: when getting an incoming call from Yoko, there is an "music" and "photo" option button at the bottom. Talk about bad inefficient interface design.
- "Moid" sounds like the genus for those sticky amalgamation accumulated under the carpet of a typical middle-class home. Suspicious guy with suspicious name and suspicious look, who looks like he's blind but actually can see perfectly well to the point where he doesn't need glasses.
- Madoka remains a likeable character. Minor complaint: Talks to herself too much.
- Technology in the future: Wearing a dress with parts that disappears without warning. Popular with balls and box socials.
- Really like the music used in this show which are disco music influenced, theres also the battle track I enjoy that mixes the orchestral strings with elements of indie rock.
- ED is legendary: it made Comic Sans MS look good.
Fact: One of Megumi Nakajima's favorite musicians is the band Earth, Wind & Fire, which may explain for the 70ish disco flavor of "Try Unite!". :)

Bar none, with a girl like Madoka being a total sweetheart, I'm gonna follow this show.
I really hope Japan starts making more upbeat, happy series. I am really enjoying the mood, and upbeat, positive Madoka is the best. Even if we might not get cannon Yuri, I am really, really enjoying Lagrange.

No proof that they are gay though.
There are only guys on their space ship, and the second guy was very quick to rush to the defence of the first guy. My instinct tells me they like doing buttseks :D

Madoka's robot needs some weapons, maybe next eps?
^
That'll happen soon, as the specs on the Vox include the use of optional combat weaponry: ranged, close-in and melee.

As mentioned, it's great to a see a far more upbeat and positive protagonist pilot who so readily accepts piloting rather than an emo who's all, "I don't want to be involved! This doesn't concern me!" and stuff like that. So it will be interesting to see how this all plays out.
Of course, gotta love the OP and ED too.

Liked how Madoka was protecting the city, especially by landing and finding places that were uninhabited and were okay to get destroyed. Like how she saved her friends and they knew it was her by her sign. Kirius was funny thinking about all the weird moves Madoka was doing. Glad Madoka cheered up Lan and she was able to transform. For a second i thought the guy in charge (forgot his name) was asking Madoka's cousin how to get Lan to be able to transform the vox. His is indeed a nice guy, he even gave her cousin and that guy passes into the facility.
Warning, this episode contains massive amounts of Madoka awesomeness.
I was going to list all the awesome madoka moments I would end up listing everything that happened in the episode.
What's weird is that even if she's a female protagonist I get GAR and BRO vibes from her.
Anyway glad to see Lan's vox system was activated thanks to the power of yuri love friendship.
Next up is Muginami.
Though with that legend we might be in for quite a lot of drama later on.

Madoka definitely carries the show. :D I have to say that this is the first time in years that I've been swept along by the sheer infectious vibe of a voice actress. Massive kudos to Kaori Ishihara.
Cliched, templated or not, the episode had me grinning from beginning to end. It's fast-paced where it needs to be, kooky when it's fun to be, and always self-deprecating whenever it veers close to being serious. Loved the Jersey anthem, especially. Rinne is turning out by far the best of the three mecha shows this season where I am concerned.

Hmm, it's probably just me, but I can't think of much to say about this episode.
It was good. I like the looks of all the Mech suits being used including the newest one which Lan is now able to use. I guess she couldn't use it before because she was afraid of it or something? Afraid of it's legend
At the end, the blonde pilot who was captured in the first episode (Array) says something about an old tail:
"It's an old tail, from Ancient Times. The Giant Green Demon will rip the heavens...The Giant Blue Demon will devour the stars...The Giant Orange Demon will spew out darkness...Through countless sacrifices, they will rule the land. Feeding off a tainted heart, they awaken from within the mind. And the demons shall rise. Do not let them loose. Do not let them, ever".
Giant Green Demon = Madoka's green Vox Midori
Giant Blue Demon = Lan's blue Vox Orca
Giant Orange Demon = ???
This may be the reason why Lan was scared of activating her Vox mech, because of this tail. If so, then what secrets are hiding within these mech suits that only certain people can pilot? Why did the other pilots Izo and Kirius want Madoka to go to their planet? Perhaps they know a way to stop this tail from coming true?
This episode raised a lot of questions. It had some good action however.
Hmm, it's probably just me, but I can't think of much to say about this episode.Counterintuitive, that's what makes good episodes (and manga chapters). When the experience is more important then some philosophical spoon feeding you got a good formula. :)
Greatly enjoying this series so far. Can't say I'm bothered by the 'no romance' subplots thing. Give me honest and natural character interactions and that's all the fodder I need to keep me interested.
Nice that they've already given us an idea about the legend regarding the Voxes. I was worried they were going to drag that out for half the series.
I liked how they resolved Lan's fear of piloting her Vox and how that ties into Yoko's talk with Madoka last episode. Speaking of "Big Sis" I wonder if there's another reason behind Moid giving those two passes to the facilities.
Fight scenes weren't spectacular but still highly entertaining for the character exposition it gave us. Kirius seems honorable enough by at least giving Madoka the chance to hear his side of things. Perfectly understandable she didn't agree with his request though. As far as she's concerned Kamogawa may as well be the whole earth and he's trashing it (though that might not have happened had she followed orders to draw him away, oh look a character fault:p).
Edit: Also Madoka's methods and Kirius's reactions to them were hilarious.
Anyway, looking forward to Muginami next episode. I suspect she's not as airheaded as she seems if the preview, and how she got away from Madoka last episode, are anything to go by.

Don't have much positive things to say about this episode (or the show in general). While not exactly on autopilot, the pacing and story is pretty cheesy. I know a lot of people like the cheerfulness, but I find it soulless. The song Madoka sang also disagreed with me.
the best-received series of the season,
I think it could deserve its own subforum (seriously: if not this one, what else?)
ep 03: maybe a not-really-flashy episode, but - here and there - plenty of nice details and story buildup.
Madoka is again the center the stage, and she did pretty well (it's "some lines and colour" and not an actress - but shows a strong individuality and consistency - this tells a lot about how well written, directed and voiced the characters are)
probably Madoka will yield a bit to the other young "comrade" ladies in the following episodes, and that's possible because Lan is a bit recessive but really nice to follow, and Muginami has been hinted to be quite a cunning, manipulative and - well, a bit troubled - character, and thus very versatile, as a tool to weave a story.

Oh great now everybody at school knows she's the pilot of that robot.
The other pilot can't put head or tails about Earthers as his thinking is too provincial.
LOL at Madoka trying a bare handed block twice. Only she can't do it but Lan can once she gets out out of hang ups.
Really where the heck did Lan pic up Woof as a response.
Madoka is bringing in the Gar while her interaction with Lan is so Moe. I guess that's cute girls doing cute things while piloting robots.
I loved episode 3; it just felt like it hit all of the correct notes.
I can’t get over how pretty the opening is. It’s just shiny, vivid, and well, brilliant. It helps that an awesome song accompanies the animation.
And of course, Madoka steals the show with her Vox and her piloting skills.
Lan is easily my favourite character. Her woofing (http://i.imgur.com/yW8io.jpg) is just too damn adorable. I’m glad she was able to overcome her fear towards the legend that apparently the pilots of the Vox robots essentially become a source of malevolent intent that the Vox feed off of in order to work? At least that’s the impression I got from the bit about the legend at the end of how the Vox are basically supposed to end the world. If my assumption is correct, then I wonder if the Vox turn their pilots into evil beings, or this legend is just one hell of a fallacy.
Looking forward to Muginami in the next episode. She came across as an airhead, but I have a feeling that was all an act.

Likely it is something that depends on the user/pilot.
If say persons like the boys controlled the Vox then yes it could be a bringer of destruction.
But with pure maidens like Madoka it would be a power for good.
Thing is Kirius and Array were expecting to get killed right there. They haven't recognized the Vox's pilots lack killing intent.
Array thinks his buddy was downed underwater when in fact he was German supplexed and lost consciousness ending up a prisoner of Earth.
Warning, this episode contains massive amounts of Madoka awesomeness.

Nice to see you've caught up to the Madoka and Lan goodness :D
Liked how Madoka was protecting the city, especially by landing and finding places that were uninhabited and were okay to get destroyed. Like how she saved her friends and they knew it was her by her sign.
Yes, fighting off the other guy and at the same time making sure that she's on empty ground, that was pretty good. Or batting away that vending machine like a baseball.
Anyway glad to see Lan's vox system was activated thanks to the power of yuri love friendship.
The Vox liked the Yuri love, that's why it activated :D
About the guy that was fighting Madoka, he must've thought that Madoka was pretty damn stupid.
"I'm stomping around all over your town while fighting you, not giving a damn about the buildings I destroy, people that might get in the way or vending machines etc. sent flying that might hit people, but I mean you no harm." Yeah right XD
Likely it is something that depends on the user/pilot.

That's as I see it, too. The Vox are neither good nor evil, they'll become what their pilot makes out of them. In the hands of the girls, they're used to protect the city and its citizens.
In the hands of the boys, it could turn out quite different.

God I love this show, it really is just wow!
I'm a massive fan of Bakemonogatari even more so than Madoka and I think Nisemonogatari is even better than Bakemonogatari but then I think this is just oh so more lovable than Nisemonogatari.
Usually a series will have that initial flare to it but end up losing some of that fire as it goes on or the fire will slowly build as the series goes on but this was ablaze from the get go and has only grown stronger.
I just love the feelings and vibes I get from this series, can't even remember last time a anime got me soooooo riled up!
I believe some have said before that Lan is their favorite character and going by character design I'd say she is my favorite in that regard but Madoka rules this series, theres no doubt about that.
And I'd say it's probably mostly down to Ishihara Kaori, she's amazing!
Loved her singing the song in ep 3 and she's just been outstanding through out so far.
I can see Ishihara Kaori going places after this.
But then the VA has been pretty damn good across the board.
I find that the bigger the cast the better the fits of the VA to their roles compared to series with relatively small casts, which end up with some roles not fitting so well.
Still stand by this being the anime of the season for me.
Can't express enough how much I'm loving it!
Nice to see that both Kaori Ishihara and Yui Ogura are moving up in the world. Though their debut wasn't that long ago. Still, I never would've pegged the singers of the kiss x sis ED to become leading ladies.

Just watched Episode 3. This has definitely become my pleasant surprise of Winter 2012.
Don't get me wrong, Lagrange was one of a handful of Winter 2012 shows that I had listed as a definite try, but I never imagined it would be this good. My hope was that it would be a decent, fun watch with passable mecha battles and appealing yuri subtext.
Instead, it has exciting mecha battles with some twists to them, appealing yuri subtext, and an exceptionally well-done female lead with a good supporting cast. It also manages to be refreshingly upbeat without seeming silly to me. Genuinely upbeat tone mixed with intense drama is a tricky thing to pull off, but there's probably no combo I like to see more than that one in action-oriented shows. It's a big part of the reason why Gurren Lagann is amongst my five all-time favorite anime shows.
Now, one twist to the mecha battles in this episode was the degree of concern that Madoka showed over collateral damage, even including property damage and crushed farms. You almost never see that in explosive action-oriented anime shows. Heck, even in American comic books and Hollywood movies this often is a side-issue at most. Here in Lagrange, it was a constant focus for Madoka, and I think that adds a welcomed dash of realism to everything that is going on, making it more immersive. As upbeat as Madoka is, there's still a down-to-Earth quality to her in that she never loses sight of "the little guy" or what she is fighting for in a practical sense. It makes for a neat contrast between her and the more proud and vaguely aristocratic male antagonists that she fights against. Madoka comes across as a warrior of the people whereas they come across as having a certain air of nobility to them.
Anyway, 9/10 for Episode 3.
Oh, gawd, after watching it now, I can agree with the guys who said much about Episode 3. The story never fails to solidly maintain the positive, humorous tempo.
All those extracurricular activities Madoka does really turn out to be very handy. You go, girl!

Possibly the best new pairing of the season, if not of the year, in this potential sleeper hit.

I really did think Ep 3 was extremely funny ... as so many others have said, Madoka really DOES make the series imo. I just loved her conversation (and singing) with the black mecha robot throughout their entire fight. She is so down-to-earth and above all normal (as strange as it may sound) that she really "rises above the pack" and baffles her opponents (and allies).
Mecha really doesn't do much for me tbh, and it never has. But I am liking Madoka and the other characters some as well. Lan was kinda kawaii in the last 1/3 of the ep too. :)
I will give ep 3 a 8/10 vote. Really good stuff.
Wow. I have nothing to complain about this series so far. It's entertaining, the characters are great, the fights are awesome, the animation is awesome. Basically everything is positive.

This series just has such an irresistible charm to it. Madoka's character and the flow/tempo of the show is such a nice, positive and enjoyable watch. It's also nice to see how this series maintains some mecha sensibilities to it.
The music and visuals continue to be outstanding, and the series really makes me hoping to come back for the next episode. Couldn't ask for more really.
I had some positive impression when I saw the trailer, just had this sort of X factor, but man I think this could be a dark horse of the winter season for me because of just how much it has exceeded my expectations. Hopefully it continues going strong because I'm really enjoying it.
Gonna be frank now, after a certain friend got me irked for calling the show as lame. I beg to disagree on his views. For that matter, some mecha traditionalists hate it.
He nitpicked on the combat sequences ("oh, her butterfly return, it's so lame"), mecha design, story, and what else? Geez, can't he just let go of his mecha puritanism (he claims he's not a purist) and have a laugh?
Finally, I admit that I'm more of a character-oriented fan, that is, I like to see the personality behind the controls.
The fine basic lesson this show gives to us is to grin and bear it, even in what appears to be insurmountable difficulty and grave danger.
No, I regret nothing.

Right. This series is about Madoka? Oh yeah, sorry about that :heh: I have to say something about Madoka, right? Ehm..... Ah, when she landed on that peanut grove it made me laugh. Girl, you're in a fight with an Unknown Enemy (ha, take that AGE! Here's a UE too!:p), and the thing you're worried about most is some old man's peanut farm? Get your head on straight, girl! Grandpa or not, I'll show you how to fight battles and worry about my pen- *gets his head drilled into the ground by Youko-neesan* Wait! It was an honest typo! I awoke to a severely crippled internet speed, and to decide between LagRanger, ZnT, GunAGE, AquaRiot, etc it took me the whole day for LagRanger and I just finished it now. NO REGRETS. Well, I do have one regret............NO BOUNCEY-CHAN IN THIS EP WHAAAA WHERE IS MY WAIFU :upset::heh:
Oh, I absolutely love the music when these girls unlocked their robots for the first time. Such a pleasant feeling I feel seeing these girls succeed. I end this review with "Maru!" :D

Okay guys, here's my more thorough defense of the work.
-------------
In Defense of Rinne no Lagrange (and the Revitalization of the Japanese Collective Psyche)
“Lame”
Just a single word provoked me to write down a more solid defense of a newly-discovered passion, so let’s begin with me quoting an exchange:
Me (after watching the first episode): DAMN, THIS SHOW HITS THE RIGHT SPOTS! http://forums.animesuki.com/images/as.global/smilies/biggrin.gif Surprisingly fabulous, even if some of the characters are reminiscent of those from a show years ago, except for ebullient Madoka.
Stevie_Nix: Like I said before, Madoka is the anti-Shinji.
Me: Maybe I’m overstating this, but this show is one of the many bottles of morale-boosting tonic that Japan needs in these trying times; makes you feel real good, from start to finish. http://forums.animesuki.com/images/as.global/smilies/smile.gif
Stevie_Nix: I really hope Japan starts making more upbeat, happy series. I am really enjoying the mood, and upbeat, positive Madoka is the best. Even if we might not get cannon Yuri, I am really, really enjoying Lagrange.
From Animesuki Forums (http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?p=3956980#post3956980)
A Crisis of Lowered Morale
Japan, as I understand, is still currently having to live with the aftermath of the March 11, 2011 earthquake and tsunami, followed by the failure of the No. 1 Fukushima nuclear power plant, and then later the resignation of the previous Prime Minister.
The end result is a populace forced to scrutinize their farm produce for radioactive contamination, to cut down on electrical consumption and shut down their remaining nuclear plants, to abandon their homes in the danger zone around the damaged plant, to clean up the damage and find the remains of their loved ones; many are traumatized by the living nightmare, some have sunk into depression, and worse, some are obliged to surrender in life with their own hands.
So what is being done to remedy the morass of mass demoralization? To me it appears that the Japanese entertainment industry has an obligation to save their country’s morale by going in and do many works of charity, and of course, perform pop songs to evacuees in crowded school gyms and civic centers.
Anime, it seems to be, isn’t far behind in attempting to invigorate a demoralized nation. Among many that tries to cheer its younger generation (and perhaps even the older generation), one example is the new 2-cour series Rinne no Lagrange.
Angsty Hero Pilots Revisited
By my own understanding (and I apologize should I be wrong), perhaps the precedent of the typical reluctant would-be hero pilot is Amuro Ray.
In this famous sequence since memorialized throughout the years, and beloved as a transformational scene, we see Amuro being confronted by Bright Noa, who was trying to persuade the former to take up arms against the attacking Zeon.
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d135/soulassassin547/vlcsnap-2012-01-23-21h08m14s101.png
In reaction Amuro objects angrily, refusing to take Bright’s orders. Nonchalantly Bright slaps him twice to turn Amuro around, effectively giving notice that his time has come to make the right choice.
Fast forward to October 4, 1995, when Evangelion came into being.
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d135/soulassassin547/vlcsnap-2012-01-23-21h14m59s89.png
In here, Shinji Ikari came with the mistaken assumption that he would be just watching the war by the sidelines, only at the very moment he meets his father does he is being asked to pilot Unit-01. He refuses, but then Rei is wheeled in and suddenly debris crashes around them.
And Shinji’s hand finds blood from Rei’s wounds, which impels him to pilot the Purple Angel Eater, and the rest is history.
Madoka Kyono: The Combo Breaker
Now, why do I have to bring out and mention about those young, reluctant men? Because they represent a very long line of reluctant heroes who initially balk at being pressed into warfare, not wanting to leave their comfort zones.
But then came along Madoka Kyono, which I am now referring to as the accidental pilot, or more preferably, the combo breaker.
Madoka represents the anti-thesis of those pilots, for she possesses a cheerful, confident personality with no skeletons in her closet, but she is not necessarily a Mary-Sue, only a girl who has that simple interest of helping out people in need.
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d135/soulassassin547/lagrange/vlcsnap-2012-01-23-21h33m37s235.png
Now the funny thing about this is, well, Madoka was not persuaded by force or threats to become a would-be pilot for the enigmatic Novumundus agency. Instead, she innocently thought Lan was needing help, and being the sympathetic girl she is, Madoka is choppered to Pharos Base.
However, once hell breaks loose as the first of the Ovids assault the base, you’ll be surprised that Madoka didn’t cower, or looked scared and trying to find the nearest bomb shelter.
She didn’t. She merely watched those Arleigh Burke destroyers unleash Harpoon missiles at the Ovid, and calmly asked Lan what in the world she was doing right with this strange machine that just almost psychically kicked her ass minutes ago.
All she knew was to ride a bike, but never something this complex. She also knew to play kendo, tennis and baseball, and yet…
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d135/soulassassin547/lagrange/vlcsnap-2012-01-23-21h41m04s129.png
Looking back at the Vox that she was imprinted with many years ago, probably saving her from drowning, Madoka felt she has a duty to perform, no matter how difficult it could be, even if confronting Array and his Ovid.
Time to saddle up.
Why?
After three episodes, it dawned upon me as to what sort of a message Lagrange wants to bring to the world.
It’s a very positive one, embodied in Madoka’s never-say-die, cheerful personality, even if one of the Ovids struck her Vox twice on the head as she tries to defend her hometown.
Funnily, Madoka also sings even while in combat, trying to reduce as much collateral damage as possible, even going as far as to repay a peanut farmer’s ruined plot with a free dinner.
Now you feel compelled to ask what’s the connection between this and the tsunami/earthquake trauma? As I said earlier, Japan is in dire need of a morale boost, to keep on going despite national hardship.
With a surprisingly positive feel (from the OP/ED, the music, color palette, styling, to the likeable characters, save for the sourpuss anti-heroes), and despite some tiny issues with the plot/story, Lagrange is indeed one of those shiny bottles of morale boosters that literally and figuratively leaves anyone watching the show with a smile afterwards, and also indeed, Madoka Kyono acts like a species of a cheerleader who can be relied on to restore one’s faith in life and outlook.
And in a Japan whose citizens are trying to regain its former strength, the introduction of Lagrange is very timely, and hopefully the show should maintain its capacity throughout 24 episodes, to inspire its audience to keep their heads up high.
Like many of its new fans, I can’t but say this loud:
MARU!

Funny how it has to take a cataclysmic tragedy to bring out the collective decency in a community of human beings.
Reminds me of how it took Hitler flattening London into a sea of burning ruins for England to FINALLY let go of its inhumane class-system and FINALLY embrace universal-education and free-health care.
But as the old Lakota-Sioux saying goes:

Madoka's secret technique of crashing in unoccupied spaces, and her reactions to doing so made this one of the single funniest episodes of anything I think I've ever seen. She pilots her giant, crashing robot ass into a vacant lot, and then comments that the owners must be doing very well for themselves to have such a nice big parcel of land. I fuckin' howled.
"Oh no! Old Man So-and-So's peanut farm!"

Funny how it has to take a cataclysmic tragedy to bring out the collective decency in a community of human beings.
Sadly, that's how it tended to be throughout history; taking some big tragic event to get people to actually set aside differences and work together.
Even back in the late 1700s with the Revolutionary War; taking the Bloody Massacre to get the small, insignificant 13 colonies to truly band together to fight off the British and establish themselves as an independent nation.
By the way, D.O.P. what series does that adorable "YES/NO" avatar hail from? :)
Morita-san wa Mukuchi, it's from the second season episode where she's got a cold and her mother is asking her what she'd like to eat, to which she answers using the pillows.

This series truly is a breath of fresh air. While the mecha battles may not be as flashy as other series, its still pretty griping due to how unorthodox Madoka's fighting style is. It was great how she spent the majority of the battle trying to prevent damage to the city as well as protecting its inhabitants.
So Muginami is a princess hmm, atleast im assuming that remark about the princess was refering to her.
It looks like Lan's got alot of fans;). Cant blame anyone, she is so f'ing cute & adorable, probably my fave character for this season so far. Almost had the same reaction as mangatron when Izo grabbed her Vox. On one hand its like "how dare he & without my or Madoka's permission" but on the other its totally understandable:p.
Perhaps. But if the Vox robots have bonded with their pilots, that means that only the pilots they bonded with can control them. Kirius and Array would be unable to pilot the Vox robots even if they want to.
It can also be argued that a purer something is, the easier it is to corrupt or taint. I’m wondering if this is the case here.
Honestly speaking, I didn't see any reason for either of the girls to exhibit any form of killing intent; all they needed to do was either beat their opponents into submissions or simply scare them off.

From the summary, it's suppose to be something about fighting "space invaders"... but those "space invaders" looks just like regular humans piloting Robots too...
BTW, I wonder if they'll ever say anything about how those robots like Vox came to be... (cause they were just there from the beginning... did they build it? or did it also came from outer space?) Donno....

About that it'll be revealed eventually.
Presently there are two factions fighting. One got first dibs making an alliance with Earth.
But this isn't the front line. Moid promises reinforcements would come once they've won. That's isn't very reassuring... It sounds like they are the loosing side.

She's indeeda clear contrast to the boys, wh have a haughty and arrogant air to them, and they didn't care about the town (and the people in it) getting destroyed either, despite pretending to "mean no harm".
Triple_R said it best, I feel the same way he does. I never imagine this show would be this good. In fact, I thought that there was going to be no new shows from this season that would interest me. Glad to see that this and Senki Zesshou Symphogear have surprised me.
This turned out better than expected for me as well. Symphogear has also surprised me, but quite opposite to this, only in a very bad way. I don't like getting massively trolled, right in the first episode even

Episode 3:
- Kirius mistaking Madoka's reckless move to try and catch the blade twice as some Earth ritual was cute. Nearly as FOB as Ichika from AnoNatsu.
- I laughed at the "Madoka and Lan holding hands among a midst of sparkles" scene. It was both cliche and kind of adorable at the same time.
- Animation continues to be solid. The robots are very sleek and pretty, If I had any minor gripe its that the scenery can stand to improve a bit. Not asking for Star Driver but its been a little plain so far.
- Episode was very much enjoyable. Madoka continues to talk too much but she's still very likeable. The foundation for the series has pretty much been laid, and I'm excited to see where this is going next.
- Really like the Misaki Kurehito endcard. Too bad she isn't more prolific.

But 12 months ago, ANOTHER Bright-kind-and-positive Madoka was lured into a sparkling world of Magic and Adventure, only to watch her loved ones and friends die one by one, and was doomed to martyr her very soul to bring hope to a hopeless world..... :upset:
At least this time we are given fair advanced warning to the tragedy, with that nasty prophecy at the end of this Episode.
Please do NOT pull a Puella Magika Madoka Magi on us, IG Productions. DON'T light the torches in our heats bright with hope, only to douse it with cold and cynical nihilism. :(

The city of Kamogawa helped fund Lagrange, and considering how much Madoka mentions how great the city is,they're getting their money's worth.

Unless they donated an substantial amount to Production I.G's budget, i cant imagine them having that sort of creative control in what the studio can and cant do. I'm also having a hard time imagining that if by chance they did, They would use it to prevent the studio from showcasing such a common & uncontroversial theme in storytelling.
While i do hope none of the three girls die, personally, i'm cool with any dramatic shifts this series may take if they are written well. This series would grow tired fast if it stays too light hearted for its 24 ep duration.

Madoka isn't trolling either; Faust is dropped and there are massive signs that tells one "this isn't a happy Mahou Shoujo", also with Gen Urobuchi, who did Requiem for the Phantom anime.
Now this: There is no sign of sad ends or death, except a legend and Madoka's dead Aunt(or was it her Mom?) and Bokurano style chairs, both of which had been seen in many mecha animes before.
This should be a happy anime, like Star Driver.

Moadoka's mother. Youko promising her aunt she'd not let Madoka pilot some robot suggest Madoka's mother has a connection to the Vox Aura.
Madoka doesn't have a father also as she is living with her uncle, Youko's father.

I just finished all the episodes so fare and I have to say I'm very impressed. This has been a really enjoyable surprise this season and it just came out of no where.
Well, since much has been said about Len and Madoka, I'm personally looking forward to what Muginami has installed for this series. I suspect she may have a Yangire side, so better prepare myself. She seems too much of a ditz to pilot a Vox. I don't think I've ever seen any female with personality similar to her piloting a macha before.

Oh I'm sure there's been some girls like her who have piloted a mecha, if I'm remembering it properly :heh: But yeah, I too am looking forward to Mugi's side to her story in this series, who is she, why they chose her and what's her speciality :D

After further inspection, Yangire maybe a little too strong of a word. The actual word I'm looking for is Obfuscating Stupidity (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ObfuscatingStupidity). Her scene at the end of third episode shows that she has taken interest of other two Vox pilots and has been stalking them from afar. In previous episode, she pretended to get lost to get closer to Madoka.

She may be a spy from another country?
Just think about it the Japanese forge an alliance with an alien race and nobody from the other nations aren't going to notice...
She was most likely snooping around trying to find out what they were doing there in secret and used the enemy attack as the perfect opportunity to sneak in when while everyone else was focused on the battle at hand.

Im looking forward to ep 4 ^^
Episode 4 was rather silly and fanservicy. Was hoping Muginami would be more interesting.
The way Youko and the teacher were digging on Tadoroko at that meeting seemed wholly unnecessary and demeaning to his character.
The way Lan was handled also left something to be desired. She's a mega-clutz now? Cuz that's cute and brings heads to the bar?
Not even going to touch the moving in with Madoka nonsense...
Maybe I'll have something more positive to say on a second viewing.
Like how the teacher was ripping on that guy. Muginami definitely isn't from earth if she knew about Lan. Also that personality seems to be a show. Best part was her and Lan working at Madoka's uncle's place. Looks like Muginam iis trying to steal Madoka away from Lan. Glad Lan is fighting back. So we get a little info on the villain's past. I wonder why hey let the enemy escape. I'm assuming its the guy who keeps his eyes closed that let him out. Man i really have to learn their names.
I'm watching this and laughing my ass off. Gonna give out a full report as soon as I'm done.
EDIT: Okaaaayy... Here's a few things despite this episode seemingly filled with blatant, fun "service":
* The De Metrio mothership has apparently suffered damage from an attack by a hostile ship while orbiting the Moon.
* Due to her being a member of Le Garite nobility (she is formally addressed by Moid as "Lady"), Lan can't swim, or able to do common chores (i.e. serving food, cleaning, etc.); she is also really clumsy doing those duties.
* The girls have those strange tattoos called Memoria and could be linked closely with their Vox; Madoka has hers close to the butt, Lan by the left side of her chest, and Muginami... well, it's located close to her crotch.
* Apart from providing Le Garite protection for their Vox fleet from the De Metrio faction, Novumundus has been extensively collecting and studying alien artifacts related to the Vox. Apart from Kamogawa, they have also obtained such artifacts from the Caribbean and near Madagascar.
* Initially, it turns out Muginami doesn't belong to Novumundus or Le Garite, and is possibly linked to the De Metrio faction.
* There is indeed a third party in the Le Garite-De Metrio conflict.
MARU! (^^)O
The lax atmosphere was nice for a change. I usually find klutzy characters to be dull, but my god, Lan had me laughing until my sides began to hurt. I just had to keep re-playing her waitress scenes. So yes, more klutzy, woofing Lan!

I miss the hijinks of the previous three episodes but the change of pace was probably necessary for character development, particularly that of Muginami.
Hmm... naughty places for interstellar tattoos. And, oh, Lan gave her first kiss to Muginami. :heh:
I chortled during the restaurant scene. It's all stereotypical but, somehow, the voice actors made it work for me. They're all adorable, especially jealous Lan. Looks like she's already getting all possessive over perennially dense jock Madoka.
I hadn't realised that the Vox names were Latin for wind, water and fire. I suppose they're meant to correspond with their pilots' personalities as well, which would in turn suggest that the "real" Muginami is a lot more fiery than she appears...

A cool down episode is very much welcomed after 3 straight episodes of action. Plenty of fun and funny moments and loved the envy in Lan's eyes as Muginami tries to get closer to Madoka.
So this episode raises a couple of questions...
Who was the guy that attacked the bisho trio's ship and what is his adjective?
Who is Muginami really and what is she hiding?

So it looks like De Mertio guys are being bullied by another group, makes sense in the last episode it sounded like they didn't want to take over the Earth or such yet Lan's race seems to be under threat by someone. Hahaha, I loved the entire scene when the principal confronted Madoka, her sister and that other guy about Madoka being in the giant robot. As soon as the principal said that "A student can fight inside a robot" in their school regulation, i knew the was going to say what he said about it saying that it doesn't say that she can't either in the regulations :p Then, to top it off, we get that wonderful scene of Madoka's sister gives that the evil looks and shifts herself over to him menacingly when he mentions the cell phone conversation she had with Madoka :heh:
I loved that guy who was on the controls "I only collect guy figurines, that doesn't make me a pervert!" Yeah, right. If that's the case, then I don't find Rias wonderful to look at ;)
That was a pretty silly thing of Muginami to do. Then again, it was also stupid for Laffinty to go out on a small boat on her own if she can't swim. At least Muginami undid her wrong doings and saved Laffinty. Now the question is, is Lan afraid of losing Madoka as a friend, or is she afraid of the suspicions about Muginami?
Lan was great at the end, getting jealous of Muginami and trying to compare herself to her XD She just ended up hitting herself in the face with a pan and walking into some wood :p But she was so cute at the end! Woof! I want someone like her in my college class! :heh:
Great episode. When Muginami threw Lan off the boat I was like ''what a bitch'' but then she was just trolling around :p
Also, at the end: I CALL YURI!. Also: Woof! (damn you make me melt Lan).

It seems like the 'jersey club' is some old school tradition thing.
I have a hunch that Machiko-sensei and Yoko were the original members of the Jersey Club, as the two women seem to be familiar with each other. It would also explain Machiko's leniency towards Madoka's less-than-orthodox activities. And I'd further guess that the club originated as some kind of beach life-saving team, given Madoka's interest in recruiting members with such skills.
I also expect an omake episode sometime in the future to explain how Lan came to confuse "woof" with "hello". Most likely her first encounter with a Earth-based lifeform was with a dog. :heh: (Apparently, she loves killer whales because of a prior visit to the aquarium, hence Orca.)

Eps. 4 is a fun fan-servicey episode after the big brawling giant robots from last episode, plus finally introducing the essential characters and their behaviors. I can understand why the commander would have the base's hi-tech voyeur screens accidentally zoom in at the that teacher, she indeed have a nice bod.
We can now easily guess on what Madoka's older cousin is looking for when she pulled Madoka's underwear in Eps. 1, judging by the strange glowing marks/tattoo in their body that can be only seen by Muginami's goggles.
I guess her cousin, like Magunami, knows a lot more of Madoka's power and the things that are happening around than she let out.

First off, I know it's said there would be no romance in this series but when Youko and Tadokoro showed up at the school my shippoing radar pinged!
And then the following scenes just made it ping even more:p
When Youko finds out about the eavesdropping and confronts Tadokoro, it's like they are already a couple:heh:
Don't care if any series does or does not have romance, won't stop me from shipping for my own amusement and the Youko X Tadokoro ship has set sail now, hell maybe even throw in the teacher for more stupid grin inducing amusement:D
I never really gave much thought to Youko before but damn she's hot stuff, Noto Mamiko is perfect here.
About Tadokoro I like a guy in an authoritative postion but when it comes to certain woman he has "trouble" dealing with, it's played rather nicely here, he's not beaten to a pulp but simply strong armed by them.
It almost feels like Youko and Tadokoro are meant for each other:heh:
Ep 4 was some very nice downtime after the great start to this great series, this would be the point where stuff started to "drop" but it didn't, felt solid throughout.
Muginami is introduced and quite like her, altho like some have said she isn't as she seems altho think that was obvious to a degree.
Digging deeper into the characters now the biggest reveal was Lan's clumsy side, didn't quite expect that:heh:
This is just too cute, nothing like a girl worried over another girl:p
http://img688.imageshack.us/img688/2490/underwaterrinnenolagran.th.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/688/underwaterrinnenolagran.jpg/)
Can only hope this anime can keep up with the awesomeness but I do suspect there will be a point where it will drop the ball altho I have faith at that point it would still be better than all the other nonsense at their best we get.
I'm still singing songs of praise (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-ZnPE3G_YY) here, it's not letting me do otherwise!:D
Has it been said how far in the future the show is set, or is it meant to be the present day?
Depending on how far forward it is, the "aliens" could themselves be rival factions of humans. (In the Stargate TV franchise, the word "alien" was often used not just to describe non-human life forms like the Asgard, but also humans who were not of the Tau'ri.)
Although, I can't help but wish this show and Mouretsu PrivateersPirates were two sides of the same story. If only there was a New Kamogawa on Sea of the Morningstar; then we really could have a Bentenmaru!
Quite an average but fun episode, in my opinion.
Somehow Chihaya Lan becomes a stalker after Menma Muginami transfered to the highschool. Before she do the same action (joining the school) on the end of episode.
Not really like the cafe segment, however the Tweeter things are pretty amuse to watch.
And the new villain guy looks very similar with TotA (Tales of the Abyss)'s Van. This almost make me ROFL. :heh:

Episode 4 was a pretty good and relatively lowkey episode.
I like the all-yuri love triangle being developed here between our three female leads. You don't see that every day! It's also interesting how the Rei/Yuki Nagato "type" here is the clutzy one, while the more Mikuru-esque girl appears stronger/more competent so far. That's a neat twist.
Finally, I think that this anime is doing a better job than most in combining typical anime-style high school hijinks with serious giant robot warfare/combat. The fusion comes off a bit more naturally here than it did in Star Driver, and in most Guilty Crown episodes.
Hmm ... I did not expect to giggle at what I did throughout ep 4. It was quite refreshing, actually - almost like a "return to earth/humanity" in a way.
I still can't get over the 'Menma all grown up" image with Mugi, though. :heh:
All in all it was enjoyable, but "light" watching.
I think the OP is beginning to grow on me a little.
7/10 vote for ep 4 from me. :)

Why? I'm not sure if I'd act much differently in this case.... well instead of chasing Mugi and Lan I'd be in the Madoka fanclub!

Yeah that was pretty frustrating what they did with the base commander considering he was otherwise pretty cool in the previous three episodes. I'm hoping that was just a once off thing since this episode was a little bit of fluff filler.
I don't think they've done it to every character though. That blue haired guy pretty much fought Madoka to a draw in their first encounter and they only really got rid of him cause it ended up 2 on 2 and Madoka and Lan had superior machines so it's handling itself better than it could have, though I'm not going to lie that it's one of my continuing concerns. Getting kind of tired of male character getting treated as stage props to make the female characters seem more cool and desirable by comparison in anime of late. I see it as little better than having female characters as acting like little more than damsels in distress all the time.
Also just as an observation, when I think about it all the new sci-fi/mecha/action shows this season are pretty much dominated by spunky female characters with an otherwise unexplained level of skill, which to be honest is something I've really never seen before. It might be that literally all of them are being done by Satelight and they love to focus on their female/idol characters and putting them on display, but I'm starting to wonder when I'm going to see a male protagonist piloting something outside of Gundam again and not being showcased as somehow inferior for being a male character. :uhoh:

Like Kaioshin said, it was more to do with the base commander and how he was treated.

Post Hanasaku trauma perhaps? :heh:
Anyway I had the feeling while watching the scene that it was not (at least I hope will not be) a common approach to the anime as a whole, but was a device used at the moment that was thrown away afterwards, so I didn't think much of it.
But if it becomes a repeated comedic device then yeah ... it would be a pity for me as well.
Post Hanasaku trauma perhaps? :heh:
Lol. I did actually get strong Mari Okada vibes, so much that I had to double check the staff involved in this story. :heh:
Well lets hope those male pilots do get to be more than just characters that the girls can frequently upstage, like Kaioshin said.

That is not nearly Okada level,Okada level emasculation is the ending of aquarion evol episode 3,this is peanuts next to that :p
You mean the super robot apology bow? I didn't actually find that emasculating because I was too busy laughing my head off. At least it protrays most of the male characters as "protector"-types always willing to "bear the pain" and have female characters just as perverted as the males. But this is getting a little off topic now...

Yeah, but I have just one last thing to say. I have nothing wrong with antagonist characters that serve as foils for the main since that's something like a staple of mecha anime (anyone remember Jerid Mesa), but the idea of doing it in a way where it's 3 girls vs. 3 boy rivals somehow just feels a little....trite. It's like something I would expect to see out of a fluffy cheesy romcom, not a sci-fi mecha series about aliens running amok on Earth and a pilot basically falling into the cockpit and trying to adjust to the change in lifestyle as this has been about so far.
Speaking of change in lifestyle, I'm kind of hoping that something happens along the line where Madoka has a crisis of faith in her Jersey Club Spirit being the catch all for saving the day. That'd make for some interesting drama ala:
Flit realizing that with all the power the Gundam and AGE system granted him that he was still unable to protect the one he cared about the most or to really make a difference in the conflict and how its drastically affecting the way he's become in the second generation.

lol thanks for reminding me she wrote that incredily silly plotline cause when I think about it in that context it really adds up.

Strongly agreed. I'd like to have at least one strong male on the protagonist side, and I think the base commander is probably the best character for providing that (note: I still don't quite trust the alien intermediary/adviser here, so I'm not sure if he's exactly a protagonist or not).
I don't think they've done it to every character though. Agreed. After watching Mawaru Penguim Drum, Steins;Gate, and even Mashiro-iro Symphony do good-to-great jobs in balancing strong male characters with strong female characters I don't see any excuse, really, for an anime to completely shaft either gender.
I liked Hanasaku Iroha, but I can do without its style of emasculating male characters.
Also just as an observation, when I think about it all the new sci-fi/mecha/action shows this season are pretty much dominated by spunky female characters with an otherwise unexplained level of skill, which to be honest is something I've really never seen before. Well, in fairness, female ace mecha pilots are still something of a rarity overall, compared to male ace mecha pilots. I still think it's a bit early for the novelty value of that to wear off.
As I wrote on this thread before, it's kind of nice to see a vaguely Gundam-esque show with a spunky genki girl ace pilot. I've sometimes wondered what Gundam would look like with a female in the main ace pilot role.

As an Eva aficionado, I thought of Moid as more like of a Gendo type (for he appears that he has some secret motives, and that he's trying to keep Lan on leash), as Base Commander Todokoro is probably the Fuyutsuki equivalent (mixed in with Bright Noa's lighter side i.e. Bright grabbing a loose chicken (http://ghostlightning.files.wordpress.com/2010/02/gundam-zz-07-bright-noa-chicken.jpg?w=640&h=480))... but we'll never know until Todokoro shows his true colors.

Well there was Star Driver, but I know you don't like the show. Aquarion perhaps? I didn't watch it but the preview was pretty.
Rather than rare male mecha genre protagonists, I think that sci-fi/mecha shows is what's rare instead. I can't even remember one last month.

So Lan is the princess, she really doesn't seem the type. Also loved how Muginami apparent 'ditzyness' is just an exterior she uses to mask her perceptiveness. She fooled me good, when she was in the hangar i thought she really was just lost.
I felt letting the blond haired guy escape like that was a lost oppertunity. I felt an interrogation scene or a brief confrontation between Madoka and him would have been well placed to shed more light on the guys motives. Then you could have still had him mysteriously set free in the end.
Godsake the adults on this series is so cool, when the last time that happened in anime :D
What the commander looked weak? got bullied by 2 former female yankee isn't weakness :p
That part make me laugh, so far the comedy was great. btw talk about cool male chara's the new enemy look badass.
The single is out!Great stuff all around!
The full version of both try unite and hello! don't disapoint.
There's also an accoustic version of try unite that doesn't disapoint.
Also Lan is holding a baseball bat backwards in the PV,that is just .....adorable.

Ah, I really liked this ep. But I just knew some of you would be rather iffed about the treatment of males in this series, like the fetish guys in the cafe or Mr commander guy. The cafe customers, I'm not going to comment on them considering I.... you know:heh: but Commander guy, I thought his interactions with Oneechan-san and Sensei was rather fun to watch, I got the feeling this was a guy inbetween 2 women he somewhat has the hots for, kinda like that shy guy on that group date :heh: So I did not see this ep as degrading on males, because at the end of the day he's still the leader of The Island and.... he likes sensei in a swimsuit :heh:
Ahem anyways, I was totally laughing the way Muginami kept saying her name when she was introduced to the class, funny girl :heh: dojiko Lan was a surprise, seems like she's not trained in the ways of a commoner, looks like a job for me :naughty:
ahem, when she transferred herself into Madoka's class, I was so hoping she'd be in her swimsuit uniform, man I can't get enough of her crotch ahem I mean Muginami wore her cute clothes into class, how come Lan didn't wear her swimsuit!!?!?!?:frustrated::heh:
And that endcard pic, HNNNNNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG GGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH if they keep this up, I'll be out of blood before the season ends. And no transfusion is going to save me, for my sacrifice will be a lesson to us all: bleed your noses, for it is the way of mankind :p:heh:

*sigh* transfer student... such a cliche.
It was still interesting watching Muginami infiltrate & spy.
Madoka sure is naive and kinda oblivious to her surrounding.
Guess her kind heart makes her that way.

Probably a lot like this (http://gundam.wikia.com/wiki/Mobile_Suit_Gundam_École_du_Ciel) :p

It wouldn't be that hard to pass Madoka of as a guy recent example would be Takuto from Star Driver. Being naive and kinda oblivious is one of the most common characteristic of your typical shounen lead especially harem series, luckily that is not the case since we have a female protagonist here. Her expressions and feelings for others are genuine which draws a lot of people to her side unlike that guy whose eyes always shut and name I didn't bother to remember have facade written all over him. I bet fifty bucks this guy will face turn heal before the series end.
Len who appears to be cool and compose at first turns out to be a dojikko is very surprising for me. It is actually makes her character quite unique and refreshing. She is actually a princess which helps explain why she is like that, but she needs some work in order to catch up with the other two leads. She also has the highest potential for character development out of the three.
Like I said before, Muginami seemed too much of an airhead to pilot a Vox. Just as expect that her ditzy part is just an act. I wonder how much genuine she is regarding her friendliness toward Madoka, however, she doesn't display any signs of hidden personality so far giving an air of mystery about her that is lacking in other two female leads. It wouldn't be exciting if her cover got blown this early in the series which is a good thing for me. The downside of this is her lack of character flaw in terms of look, personality, and capabilities meaning she won't receive as much of character development compare to Madoka and Len later in the series.
I like commander Todakoro though. He may not be able to stand up to Youko and the teacher, but it would be boring if he is portrayed as some full-time serious commander.

Megu's single is out today, and I'm listening to it. :) DAMN! :D
Yeah both songs are pretty great. Megumi Nakajima definitely has to be my favorite singer/seiyuu....possibly ever (not to be confused with favorite seiyuu or even favorite singer, but strictly seiyuu who also regularly sings theme songs). Her songs are always so upbeat and steeped in that old school 80's J-Pop style I've always preferred and her voice is pretty unique as well in that it's so much of a lower register compared to her contemporaries...kind of like MIO was in the 80's though not quite as deep. I really can't think of anybody else that sounds quite like her such that when I first heard the opening song I immediately knew who it was in the first 20 seconds without ever having read the credits on Try Unite before.
Kind of hoping she gets a role in this show at some point so we can here that delicious low register girl next door voice.
