What I'd like to know even more is, where is that going to appear?
It's not even Kotobuki Yukari...it's Ange Beato.
Is she going to be the new sprite during the meta parts? Or are we going to get something entirely new?!

I haven't started playing but the artbook does have a "new" character/sprite that isn't based on any of Ryukishi's.

It's a extremely memorable performance, what Ohara did for Beatrice,
I feel Kuwatani did for Erika. Sure, she's a lot different than I imagined Erika would sound, but it's still a great performance.

Agreed. It seems Kuwatani put a lot of effort into her voice for become Erika.
However, it's missing something. Like Alcindor said: "Erika voice seem a lil too childish than i picture it".
In Ougon CROSS, I noticed that Erika's voice is different (I THINK it's different. If it's not, I'm becoming deaf :heh: ). I prefer a lot this voice than PS3 Erika's voice.

Well, always pictured Erika's voice a little more playful and sophisticated...
But that sounds like a pig. It was a good performacne though, just not my cup of tea for Erika.
Also, completely hate Dlanor's voice, not badass enough...
Erika's voice is downright amazing. I like how she keeps fluctuating between really high and really low because of how downright hysterically joyous she's being. And to think that she starts off so dignified and calm... It's amazing.

The man from 19 years ago is voiced by Daisuke Ono.

Yeah, she's played by Sayaka Ohara. However, Yasu is said not to have a voice, yet s/he ends up taking on an appearance identical to Clair before s/he takes on her more familiar, golden-haired look.
The man from 19 years ago is voiced by Daisuke Ono.
o____________________O
That's evil. And the reason for that would be...what? A red herring?
Eh, I was hoping Ayako will voice the man from 19 years ago. She's voicing Lion after all and the resemblance should be there.

The man from 19 years ago is voiced by Daisuke Ono.
Now that's just mean. I was hoping Ayako would do that part, as she did Lion very well. Besides, if I remember correctly, Natsuhi was never sure about the gender of the caller, and just assumed it to be a young man based on the voice. I think Ayako would do that part much better as Daisuke clearly has a masculine voice.
Maybe it's because of Black Battler :heh: or maybe they thought they couldn't use Ayako Kawasumi 'cause of the whole "Lion only has fake appearance and voice" thing in ep7.

I absolutely love Zepar and Furfur, and when I heard their voices in OMK I couldn't help but laugh. Even though it's a fact that Zepar is the male if you know demonology, they should have reversed the masculine voice to Furfur to further confuse people. You could try Ebay maybe. Some of the prices listed there are only about $170 for the 2 disk set and the shipping is free for some of them as well. If you're looking to buy from the retailers though, I think you're out of luck.

That's from the artbook, which is a mere collection of few CG from the game.
The game in the LE pack is actually no different than standard edition game, it is just that it has an additional box and book, that's all.
I'm almost done with Episode 8, and I can't say I'm fully satisfied with how Alchemist handled the port of the franchise.
Frankly, there are so many weird decisions in term of voice acting direction and sprite/CG selection that make me wonder how they did it.
At least, I didn't notice any major script change whatsoever.

I haven't played the PS3 remake, nor will I ever since I have zero knowledge on Japanese, but I actually assumed it would be lacking in comparison to the PC. Remakes rarely manage to capture the palm of the original, and let's face it, the PS3 version is all about the shiny effects and being candy to the eyes.

Remakes rarely manage to capture the palm of the original, and let's face it, the PS3 version is all about the shiny effects and being candy to the eyes.
The problem is the very purpose of the games itself: the "eye candy" aspect doesn't work at all.
They did a very good job in keeping every tracks from the original games, and altering nothing from the script (or almost?).
However, the shiny effects are... nowhere close to what you can expect from a PS3, or even a standard PC VN/galge.
The problem is quite evident with an HD screen: the design in general is too "sharp", without being crisp, therefore, it looks a little rough, especially few backgrounds etc. There is actually little work on lightning and shadows (be it as effects or CG themselves), so the general aspect is rather dull with little ambiant effect.
the special effects are not too bad, especially the rapid slicing effects and the "beam impact", but I must say the "deep slash" effects are annoying as hell because they are -SLOW- and unskippable. Because of that, some full force fast strikes look extremely slow with the narration (Erika and Dlanor in ep8 are big victims of that).
But my main gripe is how the voice acting is sort of weird at times. To be honest, aside of Battler VA, Ono Daisuke, the other male characters are not convincing in their angry or sorrowful fits, especially Krauss in ep7 (when he is furious against Eva for "you know why").
And no matter how much of a Yukarin fanboy I'm, her performance was weirdly directed, especially Bern expressing "shock and panic" more than what you can actually expect from her.
Really, I will probably make several playthroughs with the 2 games, but honestly, I really can't consider these 2 ports as "successful".

Well, Bern had more facial expressions than what we expected from her by the time EP5 came out. Maybe the voice director had that in mind and...well...took it in that direction.
Oh well, what's done is done. I'm not in it for the effects and visuals, as cool as they try to be (of course, the character sprites remain pretty neat to look at). I'm really in it for the voices, and for the most part, despite their misgivings, there was some satisfaction I got from them. There were, of course, gratuitous amounts of ham (hello, Beato), but I for one taught myself to enjoy ham long before this came out. It's just best to do it in doses, I guess.

I don't quite get what you're trying to say. Do you means Bern's VA didn't express enough emotion in those scenes or it was too much?

I'm pretty sure he's saying it's too much. Then again, things like emotional breakdowns can only be interpreted in so many ways. (Of course, it's not limited to that...)

Way too much. In episode 8, she even has a "grieving" voice which does not only match the situation, but goes completely against Bern's personality altogether.
After going through Episode 8 a second time, it is ironic to me to consider Bern as the best -and- worst voiced character, since the performance range from "perfectly matched" to "completely out of character".
Another fun part: they didn't care about the "age gap" in the voice direction: they made Ono keeping his voice when Battler unleashed his rage against Rudolf in ep7 (despite he is supposed to be 12 years old), and Kotobuki Yukari and Hachijou Tohya voices are basically the "normal ones". You can't even expect them to have 40-50 years old.

I think my general opinion of this port from what I've seen is that the CGs are absolutely brilliant but the original probably did everything else better.
Personally, from watching scenes on Youtube, it seems to me like voice acting ruins the pacing of a lot of scenes. The battle scenes just weren't meant to move that slowly. The drawn out animations don't help either (Dlanor's sword was so much better in the original in both visuals and speed).

I think what it comes down to, mostly, is just that we had our own versions in mind for the way these characters sounded in certain scenes, as well as how they looked in some of the art. The PS3 version seems to go against what most people had imagined a few times. Makes us react with hostility.

Well, I've only played the first 3 eps on the PS3 version, but my main gripe is that the "sword slashes" etc, are indeed too slow. In the PC version, it was like BAMBAMBAM /RED TRUTH\, but in the PS3 version, it was a calm slash, and then red truth.
However, overallt I'm pretty happy with at least Rondo so far. Intending to buy Nocturne, too.
Is there a scan of Clair's full character art from the Limited Edition book?

the problem is that even with its own standards, it is horribly slow, despite the game is plenty capable of matching the narration.
The biggest counterexample of the previous issue is Kanon with his rapid slashes, as well as "piercing" truths (the diagonal colored beam of lights) being appropriately fast. For instance, Kanon/Shannon VS Siesta corps in Ep4 was fast enough.
But the "deep slash" with Dlanor's longsword, Will's Katana, Erika's Scythe etc are just slow as heck.
And for some reason, Dlanor's rage was really dumbed down due to this choice, while the original game went on brutal mode with the piercing effect instead of regular sword slash.

Question:
Are there any sprites showing Battler with his golden sword, like how they made sprites showing Erika's scythe and Will's sword, or is it yet another weapon that's still mentioned but not actually shown in his hands, like Bern's scythe, those duel pistols, and Beato and Erika's dueling swords in EP8?
Because either way, until I get a look at it, I'm assuming his sword would look something like this (it's the giant sword Dlanor killed Battler with; the image was taken from Ougon Musou Kyoku Cross and edited with Photoshop by me):

No, there isn't any.
They actually used a golden sword sprite, similar to Dlanor's longsword (which was initially in the doujin game but never used for some reason).
But you never see a sprite of Battler with a sword, you only see a CG with some "sort" of blue and gold (and funnily enough, the game does not have Battler in gold with the gamemaster cloak, despite the visual book shows it).

Well, I've heard that the man from 19 years ago was voiced by Daisuke Ono (though I would still very much like to hear his voice for myself), and we all know that the man isn't really Battler. Sure, Battler suggested it was him even though he knew it wasn't, but still, it was something of a red herring. So why not treat Yasu's voice the same way and have him/her be played by Sayaka Ohara for every single line? I mean, for all people who don't know who Yasu is could have known, it would have just been another red herring. Besides, it's not like the reveal wasn't gonna come soon after Yasu's identity was first laid bare in EP7.

Spoiler with voice is hardly something you would expect Alchemist to care about: they created much worse spoilers with the Openings, and the booklets of both games indicate all characters, even those you woudn't even expect to know (Lion and Will, namely).

Perhaps it's something like this...
Yasu's voice BEFORE they become a witch is unvoiced, but their voice after they become a witch is voiced. In a way, you can see the Witch Yasu as a Fantasy character. Once Yasu turns into a witch, we stop seeing the real Yasu in the story and instead are shown different representations for herself. The moment she "became a witch" is the moment we stopped actually seeing Yasu, the real person, in the VN.
So in a way, Yasu was never voiced. They only voiced Witch-Yasu, because it's a fantasy in Yasu's mind just like Beatrice, Clair, and Shannon. Perhaps they didn't want to voice the real Yasu to keep the character as vague as possible, but they felt that once Yasu became a witch, it was fine to give them a voice, as it could be a different voice from the real Yasu's voice anyway.
Leaving Yasu unvoiced still seems like a bad idea to me.

Maybe it's due to the first person narration. Many visual novels do not voice the lines spoken by the character whose eyes we are perceiving the story through.

First person narration scenes have no quotation marks. How often does Yasu speak with quotation marks in this game?
However, I noticed some lines that normally would have no quotation around them (at least in the original VN) are voiced, if the voice patch being made for the games is to be trusted.

I wasn't talking about the lines with no quation marks and their thoughts, I was talking about actual dialogue of the main character being left unvoiced. It happens in a lot of visual novels. Though since they did voice Battler's lines in the first Eps, I think leaving Yasu unvoiced seems a bit off.

Depends of the plateform and company.
Console games are not profitable with such measely sale figures. Even games ported to death like Clannad managed to sell for 30K copies.
This is also the reason why Alchemist port umineko on PSP, which indicates clearly they are desperate to make the cash flow in (that and the 2 editions (limited and bundle pack) for Nocturne, in addition to the regular version).

I know Rika and Bernkastel are different beings, but I always believed that Bernkastel and Frederica Bernkastel were the same entity. And since the duct-tape is signed with "Frederica Bernkastel", I'm pretty sure that is the case.
I have never heard him confirmeing that Bern and Frederica Bern are different from each other, though I must also admit that I am not exactly updated on the his interviews. :P
EDIT: I'm pretty sure Frederica was always split from Rika. When you complete Higurashi Kai, it ends with her telling us how she wants to experiment with the kakera's. What I think happened in Rei (only watched the anime) was Rika almost Merging with Frederica, instead of them splitting up.
I've always operated under the theory that Bernkastel is sort of a hate filled amalgamation of all the Rika's that never reached a happy ending.
Klashikari
2012-02-12, 17:17
There are "2" layers of Bernkastel: the being who is the spectator of "rika" struggle, in the sea of fragments (the narrator in the sea of fragments explaining the rules in minagoroshi) and frederica who is the fused consciousness of all Rika who has perished and struggle in each world.
Whereas Frederica stopped the whole witch act in Saikoroshi in order to live as human, Bern drifted in the sea of fragments.
The mention of "back I was human" in Episode 2 is a reference to Bern "still" Frederica before being split for good. The whole "frederica bernkastel" would be a reference to Bern's "human piece" which was Frederica, and now Erika.

After awhile I stopped thinking of the Bern we know in Umineko as having any real connection to Higurashi aside from references. Mostly because once the whole "Featherine's miko" and "she was a cat that had to walk on a keyboard for eternity until she coincidentally typed this entire thing" things came into play, it was hard for to make it fit in my mind. Although I suppose the latter could be considered a vague metaphor for Higurashi in a way, I don't really see much of a connection. Unless Bern as we know her came before Rika and Higurashi really was always just a game for those on a higher plane of existence, as opposed to the origin of the characters like we assumed in early Umineko episodes.
Since this apparently the right thread I'm gonna ask here:
What are the differences between the PC and PS3 versions? What are the Pros and Cons of either port? Please share your personal opinion on the changes.
What I read in this thread so far and gathered from who knows where:
Differences that can be either good or bad:
-PS3 has voice acting
-the art style is certainly different
-PS3 has cinematic effects which makes the book more lively
-PS3 has CGs
-PS3 has revised music
Pro PC:
-Is the way it was meant to be (or not due lack of funds?)
-leaves more room for imagination (and has therefore more impact on the reader?)
Pro PS3:
-Has Full HD resolution
(-Dolby Digital?)
Please add,correct and confirm things
Some things I am particular interested in:
There is one scene that caused a tear rolling down my cheek. That was when Rudolf killed George, which was just one of the saddest scenes overall...for me at least ;)
I think that I saw that there was a CG for that scene where George's face was totally different from the original PC version. He seemed full of agony instead of utter disappointment, which is understandable being shot and all, but it would spoil one of the best scenens in the book.
Is it really this way or am I seeing things?
And something I already added with a question mark above. Of course this is all terribly subjective....Does the book with a more cinematic appearance and CGs leave less of an impact on the reader?
So please help and excuse this long post, but I think that clarification would be really beneficial for not only me ^^

The fan-made patch for this should be coming out sometime soon.
I finished Ni 4 weeks ago, and fucking loved it! I can't wait to see why people love this Erika Furudo person so much.

Trust me, you'll love to HATE her with all your might when she first appears, THEN you'll start to sympathize with her.
And the correct term is not "translation" but "fan-made patch", because the PC version of Chiru has all content that the PS3 has story-wise and is translated.

Will I love to hate her more than Beatrice? Beatrice is one of the few characters that I hated and loved at the same time....either way, Erika sounds like loads of fun.

Personally, at first I only hated her. Then I grew to love hating her. It depends, Erika is a bit of a base breaker amongst the fandom.

Erika, to put it as neutrally as possible, is a deliberate Mary Sue.

To be more specific: she's a God Mod Sue with the personality of a Jerk Sue, intented do be hated and we all love her for that.
I do wonder if she makes a different initial impression with voice acting.

From what I've seen, she at first speaks in a very low and reserved voice, THEN she goes all hammy like in OMK.

Her VA's performance is one of my favorites in Chiru. Yes, she is reserved and proper at first, but once you hit the major scenes where she wreaks havoc, her voice acting is just insanely good. During a certain chapter in EP6, she is just straight up insane and it sends chills down your spine. It really puts her character in another perspective when you actually get to hear her character speak.

You just joined a month earlier than I did. :D I don't call that 'long'

Anyway, there are a lot of strong performances in this game. It honestly makes the experience so much more engaging than the original game, IMO.

Am I right to assume this whole song describes Erika's character word-for-word?
If so, she sounds like an even more epic version of Baccano!'s Ladd Russo.

Easily the most despicable character I've ever seen. Everything about her makes me want to see her die horribly.

Well, that's kind of harsh. She is a pretty horrible person, but she doesn't really have much of an opportunity to be anything else given the situation she's in. I have a feeling she'd be much more likable if we could see her as a human before becoming Bern's piece.

Just nitpicking, but we already have a thread for music discussion so conversations regarding songs would be better suited there.

Good point. I'd probably get a lot more answers there anyway.
Anyway, the final QC started today, according the UminekoTweak Tumblr.
