HSI 23 - Agent Takako, Judo Master

Bit of a contemplative episode, but not a completely unhappy one. The way people just barely avoided who they needed to meet in Tokyo but found them anyway was fun to watch. Characters, being moved around like puppets on a string, only occasionally crossing each other. The movie arc came to fruition here, too. Hope the world's ready for Jiromaru. He may not have learned about restraint in his time here, but I think he has learned about humility, at least to some degree. A bit of a buildup episode, though, so next week will be a crucial turning point, what with declaring Madam Manager herself as the Final Boss. (The game must have been altered to SS13).

Arghhhh previous preview was a troll, I admit I was expecting a confrontation with full of tension like in episode 12. So what did we get instead? An episode in which Ohana bonds with her aunt (Takako is your aunt? I'm so sorry!) in which males are pathetic once again (the director), Kou hangs out with Ohana's mum and with a nice Kou, Ohana confrontation cliffhanger (which was too convenient IMO, though not as bad as in episode 6 IIRC)

lol @ Tomoe in the video.

I bet nobody expected the direction of this episode to be like this. As usual, we got trolled again. :heh:

I give up trying to think about what will happen next. It's always something that I never thought of but yet, it still makes so much sense.

Only thing is if I dun get a Ohana/Ko end, I'll rage, hard. ;)

Wow, I honestly didn't think they'd be following up on the whole movie thing. Glad I was wrong. So the question is, will they actually be able to get their money back?

Ohana knew the significance of Minko's putting spinach in the lunch (and more importantly; having tasted it herself). As we remember from earlier, Minko hates spinach, which is why Ohana served her spinach when she was mad at her. Presumably, the spinach in this episode was Minko's way of apologizing for her recent hostility.

Good episode.

Ohana confrontation cliffhanger (which was too convenient IMO, though not as bad as in episode 6 IIRC)

Convenient, but not too convenient, IMO. After all, Ohana was on her way to meet her mom, so it's not that unbelieveable a coincidence that she'd run into Kou who just left from there. The episode where Tohru and Minko randomly found Ohana in Tokyo was worse in that regard. :)

I actually liked Mom's question where she asked Ko if his relationship with Ohana would've been better if Mom didn't flee that day. This is because it was actually Mom fleeing that jump started the relationship, as it made him realize his current attitude isn't cutting it and forced him to confess. I mean, who knows, if Mom didn't flee Ko might still be trying his 'roundabout' ways that wasn't working with Ohana's thick head and nothing would've progressed. :heh:

Nice of Minchi to make them lunches. Ohana's new aunt just kicked some ass. Never would have thought Takako could get things done. Nice of Ohana's mom to show Ko the footage. Looks like he's reinvigorated to go after Ohana. Nice ending with them meeting like that.

Ko nearly gets himself sexually assaulted by a milf. :D

That would have been a MUCH more entertaining episode than "use random test footage of the inn to compensate for Ko having no idea what Ohana's been up to" exposition episode.

And Takako apparently knows Judo!

I bet nobody expected the direction of this episode to be like this.

It was at a total different level this week, loved it.

Takako can scream :heh: and that judo move :heh:

That aside, Satsuki must have some amazing pheromones for Kou to blush like that :heh:

"You're the most beautiful of all my friends' mothers". So Kou just admitted checking out all of his freinds' mothers :heh:

This episode also showed that Satsuki does have a lot of love for Ohana and is always thinking of her. Not a great mother but still a pretty cool one.

The ending with the lights coming on while they were on the bridge, it was just perfect.

Ko nearly gets himself sexually assaulted by a milf. :D

ahahaha no way, Satsuki is too good for him :heh:

I love Satsuki for asking Ko whether he thought she intended to watch porn with him, as that thought definitely crossed my mind :heh: (and Ko's apparently, that guy might not be as dull as I thought).

Tomoe's interview... :heh: :heh:

I was pleasantly surprised the whole movie scam thing wasn't forgotten. Hmm, Takako isn't so bad after all. If she did something about that hair and stop spouting random english, she may become a decent character.

It's akin to disposable tissues. You use them then throw them away. :p

Ok. More seriously Ko wasn't actually to bad in this episode, when he actually is focused on. If he'd had more straight up role in the series, I might have found him more interesting as the love interest to the heroine. As it stands, even the relatively weaker stuff that focused around Kissiou come off as stronger/more important to me than the Ko sub plot.

Not totally satisfying, but OTOH at least it seems that they seem to be trying to wrap up this angle relatively soon so they can transition back to whether or not the inn gets shut down and how the succession goes.

More Takako (>.>). I still cannot stand that woman, even though she's been less annoying recently. Despite her intentions(and success) at finding that guy, I don't feel it makes up for her lack of empathy of Ohana's situation while they were on the train. Ko nearly gets himself sexually assaulted by a milf. :D

LOL, great minds think alike :heh:! That whole scene just screamed for something to happen. Why else would you mention your office is empty? I lol'd pretty hard that Ko actually thought he was going to watch a porno with her. Satsuki is such a damn tease! I was actually hoping for the most cliche' misunderstanding used in these types of situations; Ohana walking in on Satsuki falling on Ko(or vice-versa).

I agree that they were uncalled for.
- She came to Kissuiso not hoping to get her mama back, but mostly to have a roof over her head. Her only "hope" was to connect with the rest of her family. Who've all been distant jerks to her. She ended up choosing her job over her mom, and now that job is disintegrating under her feet through no fault of her own. (Though one could argue that if there's blame to be laid, some could be shoveled Takako's way... maybe. I still don't get why Sui decided to close the inn.)
- It's true that the problems of the young aren't the same as the problems of adults. They're cared for. Fed, housed and all. But they also have a lot less power over their own circumstances.
- You'd think someone who took at least a decade to go from acquaintances to husband and wife would be more sympathetic to Ohana's slow, awkward romance.

Oh, this romance trolling... It is so delicious! :D

Great, great episode. It did so many things right. It did such a great job of moving things into a Ko/Ohana direction... to either end things very effectively and believably that way, or to troll us yet again. :heh:

Hugely surprising how the 2-part Movie Arc came up again, and Takako really shined in this episode, as did Satsuki. Ko himself came off pretty good.

Nah... In fairness, Ohana's blood relationship to Enishi (or Sui) has never been made much of. Kinda expected when Sui's always insisting her son call her "okami".

Satsuki's porn line with Ko was great. Ohana better watch out, her mom might snatch him up.

Looking forward to episode 24 when Ko grabs Ohana and drags her to a love hotel, and the episode ends Yosuga no Sora style.

I really enjoy this episode, especially the interaction between Satsuki and Ko. The comparison of how beautiful she is his friends' mothers was hilarious and of course the porn watching part as well.

Ohana/Ko cliffhanger on the bridge was fated to happen, the street lights turning on after that moment was sweeter. Some would say the meeting was force, but Ko has just left Satsuki and Ohana was looking for her mother, so its not a force coincidences at all. ;)

Takako actually found the director that cheated the Inn out of its money, now can she save the Inn financially? It seem so easily solves :eyespin:

The preview for episode 24, w/ Sui lying on the bed like she dying, let hope this is not true and its more trolling like they did w/ the preview for this episode...

This ep had the miraculous effect of transporting me right back into the mindset of 10-11, during Ohana's last Tokyo trip, which was the dramatic highlight of the series. I honestly can't recall another series that had the maddening ability to turn the quality on and off like a switch the way this one does. Oh, that it had been once cour!

I've said all along that I simply wanted a resolution on the KoHana storyline, and that's still true. But now that we're this close, I really want to see them end up together. And as for Satsuki, I've done a complete 180 with her. I said before that Minchi was the only one in this cast willing to call BS (which needs doing a lot) but I forget Satsuki - the difference is that she uses her sharp tongue as a scalpel while Minchi uses hers as a sledgehammer. She's smart, she's damn funny, she's morally ambiguous, and she's critical to all of the most compelling conflicts driving the plot.

Episode written and storyboarded by Nishimura Junji, director of Simoun, true tears, etc.

Of course I loved the ep, for many things but especially for Ohana and Kou heading back together. Kou is so limp, but I was still thrilled.

I did feel their meeting was too pat and too coincidental, though I guess we knew that Ohana would be headed for her mom's office. So was Satsuki's meeting with Kou, though I guess she could have planned it all. Those seeming coincidences aside, however, the ep was packed with feeling, intention, and incident.

I hope Enzo will forgive me for lol'ing so hard at him for so long when I was watching this episode! As I was watching it (great ep btw) I was thinking "He's going to love this ep and is going to be wroth that it is so good!"

And I was correct, it seems. ;)

*sigh* ... I still dislike Satsuki. Period. Some of the reasons were already said by me in previous threads and re-phrased by other posters in this thread. Hmph. http://circvsmaximvs.com/images/smilies/angry/grumpy.gif

Takako's judo throw made my jaw drop btw ... TOTALLY was not expecting that.

But yeah - another great ep. I vote 8/10 on it. :)

Hmm, as a little bit of an aside ... regarding the writing of Nishimura, I liked True Tears, but Simoun for me kinda boring (although I could appreciate the "world-building" therein). Haven't seen CODE-E or Nurarihyon no Mago, so can't say anything about them....

The episode was well paced, and discussed Kou and Ohana's feelings well enough. The funny moments were actually funny, and I truly did like the Ride of the Valkyries playing when Takako was owning someone.

Man, Satsuki would be such a cool person to know, if she wasn't such an awful mom. Her way of trolling people is most excellent. On the other hand, her apathy might just be hiding other issues.

Also, I do like having Ohana call people balut under her breath. Yea, clearly being around those idiots has caused me to crack.

Everything was perfectly timed, and Ohana, the hot blooded but occasionaly indecisive loud mouth finally speaks the truth in that video, or something... And somehow they ended up meeting on the bridge.

This episode was a very strong combination of comedy and drama and finally could I actually bring myself into their world. The strong use of sound and utterly beautiful PA works style background (Obviously, the episode was in the city because they wanted to draw those beautiful cityscapes) :)

It wasn't perfect I guess. Kou's outfit was kinda lol, and his talk about coffee was too emo for me to stand. But, there was actually no stupid Jinomaru moment; in fact he was cleanly put in his place so that's already a +1, plus nobody was retarded this episode, so that's already enough to make it a top 5 HSI episode. :heh:

10/10

Got me too,you know how I pride myself on being able to guess the writer of each episodes and I was sure that was Okada all the way, still I guess it makes sense since he handled the whole movie arc and that came back in this episode.

I'm still expecting some major trolling even if there's foreshadowing of a OhanaxKou ending ("all a man can do is wait")

Still more romance than I was really expecting, but it's not so bad and I havn't even bothered looking at the preview :heh:

Not that I had "Stacy's Mom" going on in my head during that thing between Ko and Satsuki. Then again the thought of wanting to be with Ohana's mom would probably confuse his own feelings with Ohana as well.

Good episode though, paralleling the two situations going on.

And it's good to finally see a male character that isn't such a tool.

I would rather see a tool than the blandness that is Ko, the worst type of character to happen to anime in 2000 years. Seeing him at the end of the episode when the lights came on, his giant fucking eyes glowing, a literally wretched. Guys should not have eyes like that.

His interaction with Ohana's mom was decent though, still hate the guy.

Conviction (http://meotwister5.wordpress.com/2011/09/06/hana-saku-iroha-ep23-conviction/)

Takako says flat out that Ohana doesn’t have as many problems as she thinks she has, and Ohana does realize that this is indeed true; she may as well be making mountains out of molehills. Kissuiso’s possible closure none withstanding, one of the things we have seen Ohana do a lot of the time in the series lies in two very polar opposites: her tendency to be spontaneous and gung-ho when faced with problems, and her tendency to think and ruminate excessively on many issues. Most people have a single mindset, yet she is very capable of ending up in either extreme. When you think about it, it was her spontaneity in the beginning that left Ko hanging without an answer, and her indecisive rumination again keeps their relationship on an indefinite hold. Perhaps to say that when she should be quick, she is slow, and when she should slow down, she takes things a tad bit too fast. Ohana, like that mix of her childishness and maturity, is again a melding of extremes.

On that train and in Tokyo tower she is given a lot of time to think about her actions, and what she thinks she must do. It’s a bit difficult at this point to understand what she will do, but it’s clear that she possesses enough resolve to finally settle the issue with a decision. She claims to have a one sided crush on Ko, probably stemming from the belief that Ko has finally moved on, but it would seem that her ideas are different from reality. It isn’t one sided.

Maybe Satsuki really hasn’t seen the video of the inn and it’s staff before, but I think she was doing all of that with purpose in mind for Ko. Down in the dumps despite his attempts to get out of it, the poor boy simply was still in limbo whether he still felt the same way for Ohana despite being left hanging all this time. It’s only natural for him to be confused after months of being left in the cold and waiting for a bone, any bone for that matter. He asks Satsuki for things he thinks he needs to learn about his best friend turned potential girlfriend, to which she declines to respond but opts to just show him the Kissuiso video, which I do think she hasn’t seen, but most likely believes has something for him to see: her lfie in Kissuiso he hasn’t been a part of. The video will, at least, show him something he could be there for. With it, seeing Ohana hard at work and having one hell of a Freudian slip on record, gives him some more extra strength to continue a quest he finds to be useless. Nothing could be farther from the truth it seems.

As for the bland coffee bit… bear in mind his comment that Ohana isn’t anything like plain coffee, and Ohana’s penchant for mixing cola and coffee. Aside from the caffeine overdrive, we have only seen once or twice Ohana make her usual combination. The show decides to have her do it again, in the same time that she gets used in a coffee metaphor.

Let's see what was going on past two weeks.... *play ep 22* Ah the wedding preparation...
*Minchi and Ohana start fighting*Oh God i really want to shoot myself now...
In all honesty, it may not be so bad if some one shoot me now
For God's sake why this episode still haven't end yet
Please God,let this series end here and ep 23 is just a filler
*wedding sequence*Hmm at least it's not so bad now, hopefully i can follow this to the end
the inn is what?
*play ep 23 and quickly skipped through it, then go check animenewsnetwork for the number of episodes* I can't follow this shit for another 3 eps. Heck even one is impossible
Better to drop it now
Maybe i will just read the ending on wikipedia when it finished airing

2/ I don't understand how a series with so much promising and potentials, and i have once enjoyed so much... now turned into a string of such forced/fake/rushed/nonsense development. Wedding at the inn comes out of nowhere. The inn closes down out of nowhere. People just confirm relationship without any build up. What next? Tomoe marry the author guy, Yuina marry her fiance, and Nako hook up with random guy at the bus stop?
Seriously, i watched and enjoyed the most part of the first 21 episodes. I can't even understand what did they do so wrong that i ended up dropping the series when only 3 episodes left to go

I downloaded episode 22 in early morning, but waited till night to watch it (off day), because I dislike Minko aggressive behavior in last few episodes, but I was glad I did. No spoils from me... you should watch it :)

About the Inn closing, it was in conjunction with the filming director arc, where they were scammed and Sui brought it up, when the wedding was announced, so there would be less confusion on who would inherit the Inn and maybe changing Takako mind about marrying her son, if theres no Inn.

Relationships... I started watching this series expecting no love triangles relationships like "True Tears", because I get emotionally depress for the character. The genre of this series doesn't even have a romance tag on it. There was small misfits of relationships though, like Ko/Ohana, where the relationship was establish at the beginning, this relationship was to feed into Ohana development and perspective revolving "love". The side characters had their own clause, but the main focus of the series was on Ohana development and how she change herself from the beginning to now.

Interest in this show has seriously quieted down, since it became clear there would be no Ohana x Tooru ending.

300 posts in the Tohru thread in a few weeks says yes. I never thought it had a snowball's chance in hell, personally.

Ko, how much of a pathethic character has become of him? Damn, he could have made a relationship with his meganekko partner because... he's been long away from Ohano with 0 answer after his confession at the first chapter, and then Jinrou says "Its a man's duty to sit and wait"? and Ko's "I haven't been drinking coffee by 6 months" Pfffftttt!!!!

1 bullet for yourself? :uhoh:
The bullet must be for thrusting P.A. Works :heh:.

If I recall correctly, Ohana been away for 6 months. Not sure the last meeting in that Café between Ohana/Ko was, that was the last time they drank those.

Now I'm curious about the time period of that time ^ anyone know (estimate)?

Very early on I got a sneaking suspicion that Ko was a rather flat character, and that things weren't going to be done to change this.

Mind you, back then I was working under the assumption that the writing in Hanasaku Iroha was much tighter than it turned out to be, and that this off distant stuff with Ko was working up to some message about being willing to move on with your life. So it seemed unlikely that they'd just toss Ohana and Ko back together without significant build up.

I was wrong only in that I overestimated writing quality :p

Because you think it's now sure they're going to end up together?
If that's the case you're underestimating Okada's troll abilities

Straight from Satsuki's place, which is where Ohana was heading. Didn't you watch the rest of the episode? :p
