At least partially yes.

During the Yokohoma War Tatsuya ends up using regrowth and Miyuki is forced to explain that power after swearing the group to secrecy. As for his full powers, I think only Lina ever finds out. The rest of the school is still in the dark, although the main cast at least knows Tatsuya is far more dangerous than he likes to appear and is affiliated with the military.

IIRC only his sister. I'm not even sure his school adviser, who is is also in the military, knows. I can't really remember, but I think Saegusa might have caught a glimpse of his mist dispersion against a tank during the Yokohoma Wars, but the attack was beyond anything Mayumi Saegusa comprehended in magic.

I believe that was gram demolition (as Mayumi would refer to it during the tournament). That's different. Mari wasn't sure what it was when she saw that, but at the same time she was afraid to ask Tatsuya because of the power.

Hm.. I just re-read the Chapter 3/4 translations on BT and noticed one thing in the translation.

I thought Tatsuya was weak in Interference Strength .. but it seems like it's one of the areas he's strong in .. or at least it's implied he's strong in that.

About volume 6, this is in the 3rd place after SAO and Platina Data in Oricon's ranking, so it seems Mahouka is gaining popularity between readers.

I don't have my own copy yet, but some people say this volume covers the beginning of the newcomer's competition.

I really would like to see an animated version of this series, mainly because I'd like to see Miyuki in her different clothes :cool:

I'd be confident that the team doing Accel World could do this series justice. I mean, they already did promotional posters! :D

Then again, does that mean we'll have to wait till .. 2047 for an anime >_<

I doubt I'll be updating the summaries for this since it's a pain for me to convert image --> text (I read machine translations), but the novel takes place in the first 11 chapters of the web arc. You can read that summary for a rough idea of what happens. As for the new parts, you'll likely have to wait for a translation or for someone else to do them. Either way, I doubt the new parts will change the plot. They're probably mostly fleshing out some of the sub-characters. Summary can be found... somewhere in this thread. Too lazy to pull up my mediafire.

That's in volume 6. The inside cover image, I guess it's called? It's not really a fan image in that case. As for a website or something like pixiv, I can't help you with that.

I'm jealous. It took me a good 3-4 months to properly read through them all. MKnR is the only LN I've properly read in japanese :(

Well, manga have a variety of schedulles, so it's easy to get addicted to them :heh:

I read a lot (damn Share and Perfect Dark), but the ones I'm interested in the most are: Yasashii Sekai no Tsurikata, Kore wa Koi no Hanashi, Rika and Sekai no hate.
The others can wait until I get takôbons ^^

Ah, also Rettousei and Yuutousei. The second one because Miyuki... well, the first one and the LN also. She's juste too cute.

Right now, I'm reading Oda Nobuna and SAO vol.9, so I will read this in two months or so.

It's most likely Miyuki.
Tatsuya's and Miyuki's eye colour (http://www.baka-tsuki.org/project/images/5/5e/MKnR_v01_000f.jpg) are both blueish, while Mayumi's is red. In the cover, both eye colour are purplish (due to light effect?).
Besides, Mayumi had her cover in Vol.5, while Miyuki's last one was Vol.2, it's time she makes a comeback:heh:

We only see his thumb and index finger of his hand, the cover cuts there.
It's definitely not his stomach, the proportions just don't fit. There are two small gaps between his arms and helmet, which is the background, so if that is his stomach he pigged out a lot since last Volume.

The cover is Tatsuya and Miyuki. Tatsuya is holding his helmet, since the suit is something similar to a rider suit, I believe. The girl in the background is Miyuki, since the skirt shows snowflakes (Miyuki's symbol). Mayumi's is some kinda autumn leaf or something of the sort?

Also, Mentar, Mayumi was in Yokohama Wars. Tatsuya goes off by himself, but Mayumi, Mari, and Suzune are with Miyuki's group. Yokohama is also during the present. The past arc is arc 4, which is a recollection of the Okinawa Invasion.

But unlike other shows, I don't really feel any "negative" rivalry in my shipping. Personally, I'm rooting for Miyuki for a long list of reasons, but that doesn't mean that I wouldn't like Mayumi or Mari, too.

Example: One of my fiercest shipping contests was in Hayate no Gotoku at the end of the Greece arc. I was and still am a devoted Hina shipper, and while I was noncommital-neutral on Nagi, I fiercely resented Athena (and, to a lesser degree, still do). In Mahouka, pretty much all girls have their own appeal, and while I have my preferences, I don't have any dislikes.

As a character, Mayumi is great. Intelligent, playful, yet easily embarrassed, and I really like her genuine efforts to help people out and overcome the stupid bloom/weed divide. If she were to end up with Tatsuya, I would only mind that there's a worthier girl who has suffered through much more and tried much harder.

Mari is awesome (and hot as hell) and makes a great pair with Mayumi. What's not to like? But since she is already attached, there's not much shipping involved here :)

Miyuki is a special case for me. Sure, there are sides of her that I normally tend to disapprove of: Her possessiveness and jealousy. What more than offsets them however is my knowledge about her background and past - what she went (and still goes) through would emotionally warp anyone, yet she managed to stay kind and positive throughout. She's the girl who is going through the biggest ordeals to support and protect Tatsuya. And so, she's pretty much the only imouto character I can think of that I fully root for.

I like this series because each character, including the males, have their own charm. And since there is no harem here, the plot focuses in the story development, making it a nice reading.

That said, I like Miyuki the most among the other girls, and even more after reading about her past with her Onii sama. As character, and as the girl who will end up with Tatsuya.
Mayumi senpai hasn't had much interaction with MC, compared with Honoka and Miyuki.

Broadly speaking, just characters. I'm not on-board the shipper's deck for any ships yet. While Miyuki's moments with Tatsuya where they act like shameless lovers are fun, it's not exactly at the level where I would want to ship them. ;)

And it's not like I dislike Miyuki or anything, pretty much most of the characters in Rettousei thus far is pretty likable with their own character traits, even if there's only just that at this point of time. ( since only the Shibalings have the time dedicated towards setting up the backstory drama at this point )...

Well, with the exception of everytime 'Hurr Bloom/Weed' gets brought up in some regard or respect.

It's not like I meant to spark anything in particular with that question, it just piqued my curiosity mainly because of the... somewhat... suffocating amounts of Miyuki love thrown around these parts. :uhoh:

Look who's stirring up this here coffee-cup storm. And calling them Shibalings indicates too much Starcraft for you. They'd be screaming for nerfs on the Zerg all over the known galaxy if that ever became a viable option for Hyper-Evolution.

Agreed with what you've been implying (or blatantly saying, depending which way you'd look at it) though, we still need more time for the dynamic between the characters we've come to be attached to in following this series to evolve and reach a new normal as the story develops.

Tatsuya's emotional development (hopefully it progresses beyond the 'hm-this-is-odd, or-is-it-interesting' level we're at now) would go a long way in changing this. I think someone mentioned some time back that the romantic subplot would serve as a yardstick for his development. It works backwards as well: his development would cause the subplot, no, much of the main plot too, to change, with Tatsuya seeing through different eyes, and in turn others seeing him differently as well, along with the whole damn Soul Train of new, alternative courses of action that can follow from there. In fact in the former case I quite suspect it's the only way we're going to see any meaningful development beyond the one-sided introspection of our hapless girls, and from there what we glean in the ever-so-slightly faulty dark rooms we call 'the reader's mind'.

Much rethinking will be in order to suit the gradually defrosting iceman: this Tatsuya will feel and handle very differently, I hope, please O author...and maybe some increased aggression to start titillating the readers? Ah, sweet unpredictability. Add that to a hopefully increased focus on the bigger picture from now on and hence much trickier situations for our merry band to get sucked into, and I suppose with that and then some the series will reach another level. To that end personally I'll wait and see.

In any case, I have been for a time now and still am partial to the Kaichou End, not least because I'm allergic to too much sugar-sweetness - there's too little dark in that particular corner of the (okay, fine, it's still developing) plot, and I'm waiting on the author to give me a good dose of it once we start getting to the nitty-gritty of Tatsuya's plan, and partially because up till now Saegusa's been entertaining me with her way of dancing around the whole issue. I'm curious as to where it will all go...and frankly will be sorely disappointed if she never gets the reveal about those double-entendres Tatsuya seems so wont to toss at her unawares *once he becomes aware that he's been throwing them around*. At the very least.

Nonetheless I'm okay with the author going whichever route he feels best so long as there's a good sense of closure to the whole subplot since by now there's too much material for it to not be closed without riotous protest, and yet too little for us to draw up any real battle-lines.

And it seems the same things still choke the Old Guards. Were we always like that, or did we have to work on it, I wonder? Wahaha~

Denyuden, AKA 'legend of legendary heroes' ('densetsu yuusha no densetsu' in Japanese IIRC)? That one is good, a bit lot darker than this series, and I for one can never predict the plot twists. I haven't been following it though, I have no idea if it is still going.

EDIT: Shiiiiiii- It's still going and I've missed a BD special LN, another LN volume of the main plot, and what appears to be a Side Story. *headdesk* I'll get around to reading those 3... maybe... eventually...

Denyuuden is GODLY (to me at least) (and if you ignore the weird prose). PERIOD. (And please don't read the wiki if you want some of your mind blown). Currently the series stands at 40 volumes including the side stories, but it's pretty easy to read.

And Flere, actually DYD doesn't have that many twists, it's just the scale of the story gets insanely bigger. Itsuka Tenma no Kuro Usagi is the one with mindfuq twists. :heh:

Mahouka is many times superior in prose and descriptions if we are comparing with DYD. However, the details can sometimes be overwhelming for the simplest of things (which is considered bad by some native readers). A third of the text in Mahouka is either setting or descriptions. The mechanisms also stem from believable science which makes it enjoyable and yet an occasional pain. The main draw of course is its overpowered protagonist (at least for the native readers), though despite the fact we know he's overpowered, it's strangely still entertaining. Mahouka uses 3rd person narration and a lot of parts trigger the readers to infer the traits of characters from their actions and behavior (which are described in great detail). In other words, there is a lot of show-not-tell employed to help the reader to understand the characters.

DYD has been rated as a series with one of the simplest and worst prose that you can ever have in a light novel (which also makes it somewhat hard to translate sometimes though, from a different end of the spectrum with an entirely different reason, unless you are fine with sacrificing English prose quality, like me). Except for heavy expositions, majority of the text is either dialogue or monologue making it relatively easy to read and zip through. Contrary to Mahouka, DYD employs the heavy use of monologue to help the reader to understand characters. As such, it offers a more intimate view into a character and allows the reader to better empathize with the characters. Even though it has prose issues, it is pretty well organized in terms of well-planned changing of perspectives at different points in the story (unlike Oda Nobuna, which has haphazard monologue). Obviously, it uses first-person narration. The draw of the series is that the setting grows to pretty humongous proportions and nearly the entire cast of supporting characters (and there are many of them) are very well fleshed out, partly attributed to the large number of side stories (currently standing at 18 volumes) and as well as the frequent change in POVs. Also, nearly every character goes through insane shit to make them the way they are, which makes it interesting to me. DYD is pretty underrated, mainly because most readers don't like the bad prose and the occasional facepalming descriptions despite the fact it clearly has a very engaging plot and well defined characters.

Alas I digress. But when we talk about writing, LN writers' writing are usually considered as subpar for one reason or another. And it's hard to compare to others when we don't know what 'others' you are referring to.

I thought it was a Korean novel, and I don't like too much the old Korean stuff since the most always end with the worst possible ending.
Even now, there are a lot of doramas and some stuff that start well, but at the end, the plot gets screwed up :heh:

And yeah, Light Novels, in general, are not recognized as literature by a large group of writers.
I, for one of the fans of Monogatari series, am against that. It's true that there are a lot of LN that don't deserve to be neither in the top 20, nor the top 50 or 100. But there are some amusing titles, like Utsuro no Hako to Zero no Maria, and this one with the complexity of its structure and descriptions.
Zaregoto, Monogatari, and so on.

And woah, Nakamura Yuuichi does fit Tatsuya yay! Hayami Saori :love: ? Didn't really expect her, but then again I don't know who to expect and she does seem like a good choice. I've been missing her voice in major roles for a long time. Sounds like I'll be getting it :D

In the last part of volume 7, u can read the dorama DVD will be published with the next volume in December and the new series that will start the next month.

Hope to see a good response that can make real my dream of an anime.

Not really. The artist might of worked on some of the art but the majority of the art was done by clamp. Yeah its going to get an adaption, but I don't think it'll be anytime soon. Their going to dumb it down a lot if they planning on animating it.

2nd episode covers hattori confrontation and extends until the whole sayaka/kendo thing is resolved.
3rd+4th episodes cover & wrap up blache.

though this would end up being about 24 episodes which is standard?? for a medium length anime series.
assuming that typical short ones have 12/13, medium is 24-25, and longer ones contain just multiple seasons of the 24-25 format

personally i hope that if/when this gets an anime it gets 2x24 :D

But if they only cover up to that far, then a lot of stuff would remain unsolved at the end of the series that requires a season 2...
Like the whole background about the main character's family and how he ended up being like that, as well as many questions about the ten families that would be remained unsolved

We all know that Vol 5 will be those "extra" in those anime XD

I think everyone will agree that a series as consistent and with as much depth as this one will require AT LEAST 24 episodes for a first season.

This novel is one that explains a lot behind how the magic and the logic behind it works, so im guessing the anime will need to include A LOT of talking and explaination in order to explain how most things happen in the story, and if its only around 12 ep it's most likely going to end up leaving quite a lot unexplained? (Imo)

Hard to say what will be better, since the explanations and the narration are in 3rd. person, so I found this a little hard to adapt.

Anyway, I was talking about the extension of those text walls in the LN. Manga has proved those explanations can be compressed without further ado with images and less words.

It will be boring to have half of a chapter only about magic mechanics and so.

I think there is a big difference from SAO and Mahouka's way of explanation. SAO anime can probably ignore some explanation but if that happen to Mahouka which is explanation heavy then the work will loose its own uniqueness and its charm. Even though reading a wall of text is taxing, the part where it vastly explains its setting is needed for the setting to makes sense. Since unlike SAO. Battle in Mahouka ends fast with Tatsuya ending it in an instant then after that a bunch of wall of text to explain how he dominates his opponent.

Yaaa I feel the same way ^^ a lot of CAD that the students made or use requires explanation to how they function, as well as most fights in the novel is followed up by an explanation of "what happened"

Maybe he just decomposed the bullets completely and regenerated them in his hand. I remember him doing something like that with the bullets he used to destroy the Chinese fleet in Arc 4.

You seem to forget that decomposition is an innate magic for him. He can activate it faster than the blink of an eye since the magic is seemingly "wired" to his brain. If he wanted to, he most definitely could decompose a bullet in flight. When he used restoration (his other innate magic) in the School Tournament Arc, he was able to activate it so fast that no one was able to even notice it. Remember, the audience include thousands of students and there were a handful of elite experts. Even the two undercover soldiers didn't catch the magic and wouldn't have known it activated if they didn't know about Tatsuya's ability beforehand. Even a person with a trained eye such as Kazuto's couldn't explain what happened.

The guy used Flash Cast in the Nine School Battle Monolith Code finals, and Mist Dispersion in front of 'Cardinal George'... I wouldn't count on him not using top secret magic in front of others :heh: As long as he has a way to fool other people into thinking he used other stuff, he'd pull out the top secret magic (Nine School Battle, a CAD on his hand + single component spell disguised the Flash Cast; Mist Dispersion, he made it look like Sirius' mono-molecular blade magic cutting through things when it was just layer of Mist Dispersion casted on his palm).

Also, whsie, I don't think he would take the risk if he could avoid it. He will use his restricted magic, but only when he has no other choice to achieve what he wants/must and he can cover it up. He used flash cast against Crimson because it was necessary for victory and he could disguise it with the extremely basic Vibration Magic (I think that's what it was. Too lazy to check). I just don't think he would take the risk otherwise (as in, he could kill the soldier without using Flash Cast).

As for Regrowth, he has no choice. It's entirely subconscious unless he stops it. I gave the number as 0.2 (since that's roughly how the math worked out), but it's probably activated in a much shorter time period, since a lot of that 0.2 second time period is spent reading the Eidos. I would say the casting is actually near instantaneous without that reading period, which is why the two soldiers didn't feel a flow of magic.

Power-level wise? Definitely yes. Still not sure it's the right label for him though cause he's still super flawed.. He has no strong emotions so he's almost always composed.. but he can't even get properly aroused..

I'm not sure anyone that has any real interest in the opposite gender would ever think of being him as "wish fulfillment" -- this is also bad news for all the people shipping Tatsuya x Anyone.

Tatsuya may have been popular with the girls of his own school (whom all wondered how the hell Tatsuya was a Weed), but the guys were filled with jealousy and rage.

He didn't show up much after the tournament where he was gloriously caved in by the ceiling and hence out of commission for the remainder of the Monolith Code Competition (Tatsuya + 2 Weeds replace the team). People were like wtf, an technician and two guys who weren't even on the original tournament team?

There is a SS about Morisaki. It mostly explores his background where we learn that his family is into the security/bodyguard business. He himself became a bodyguard for an American girl as she was chased by Japanese authorities throughout the city. It was a so-so SS.

It should be mentioned though that during the student council election arc, Mayumi's anti-discrimination policy allowing weeds to serve in the student council too got the majority, so it's fair to assume that at least a part of the blooms are no D-bags like Morisaki.

There's been one cute scene during the 9 school tournament where some girl participant (I think it was Eimi) was "thanking" the male first-years for "giving Tatsuya to the girls". Morisaki busted a gut and left seething ^_^ ... so, the bloom douches get their just deserts.

Yeah, I got through about a third of it (have a summary for that third as well, but it's uneventful) and then got tired of it because it's Morisaki and stopped reading it. Whoops. Someone give me Mayumi or Miyuki. I can't keep my interest in a story without them (since I pretty much blitzed through all the web arcs in one go).

Someone who has a reason would not outright reject, and even attack, another person just because she was "inferior" (I refer to the issue with Mizuki when she points out they aren't that much different since they're both first years who have just started). There's quite a difference between confidence in one's ability and hubris. Because he attempted to attack the Course 2 students, I would have to think he's more of the latter.

There's also the issue that the author has not written too much about Morisaki. There is a short story devoted to him, but there's too big a gap between how he acts toward Tatsuya and how he acts towards that one girl (whose name I have forgotten). There needs to be more detail regarding the relationship between him and Tatsuya to properly resolve the Morisaki hate. All we have right now is that he avoids Tatsuya on Disciplinary Committee rounds.

No, the names aren't different. The characters we use to for names are 90% + similar. So the problem isn't there. It's the phonetic pronunciation that's REALLY different. You can say Ichigou and I would have no clue that you're referring to the future successor of the One Family.

Generally speaking, there's less localization needed from Japanese to Chinese than Japanese to any other language. The sentence structure and idioms are similar enough. The differences lie in the diction and honorifics. The honorifics can easily be handled. The part people have to be careful when translating from Japanese to Chinese is the diction. While some Japanese characters are written in the exact same manner, they're used differently.

For example, 有料,无料 means service charge and free respectively in Japanese. In Chinese, it means if you have the materials (for making food or whatever) or not. In Chinese, you're more likely to see 收费, 免费. Same characters, didn't ways of usage.

I was learning some words in Chinese, and some of them have the same meaning as the Japanese counterpart, but I did quit after a while since it's much more easier to read Japanese to me.

Actually, more than half of the Chinese characters have the same meaning as their Japanese counterpart. For Chinese readers trying to read Japanese, it's about isolating which characters are the exception.

And I'm not 100% sure about Japanese, but from what someone told me, Japanese in its written form is essentially a hybrid of a character and syllabic language. For the average Joe, I prefer to think of Chinese as a pure character language and English as a pure syllabic language. In Chinese, the character represents a certain meaning and has no direct relation to how it's pronounced in real life. How a character is pronounced is represented in its zhuyin or pinyin (the Chinese "alphabet" so to speak) forms. Whereas in English how we speak is directly related to how we write, which would be similar to writing Chinese in its zhuyin or pinyin form.

Japanese from what I know mixes the two with kanji as its character base and then the katakana and hiragana as its syllabic base. So when one is writing or reading Japanese, one is constantly switching from a character to syllabic form and vice versa.

For Japanese to Chinese translators, the key would to know A) the differences in the usage of the kanji. Most of it is the same, but there are exceptions. B) understand the syllabic base of Japanese and what idea is represented by it. More often than not, it's the second part that frustrates native Chinese speakers. Kanji, which is considered the difficult part of learning Japanese in Japan, is considered the easier part.

Yeah, when I watch anime, I just go by the subtitles. I may recognize certain phrases (e.g. arigato goizamsu, sayonora, konbawa, etc) but I have trouble linking them together. Those don't in any way sound close to their Chinese counterparts.

As a few more examples, Takeda Shingen is Wu Tian Xing Xuan, Oba Nobunaga is Zhi Tian Xing Chang, Toyotomi Hideyoshi is Feng Cheng Xiu Ji, Tokugawa Ieyasu is De Chuan Jia Kang. That's how we read the various Japanese figures in Chinese.

One thing that makes difficult to translate some parts from Japanese is indeed the fact that there are words with the same pronunciation, but different writing, so when there is a word written in hiragana or katakana (and it isn't a foreign word adapted to Japanese pronunciation) you have to think in the meaning if it isn't an obvious word, or a name.

One example could be some dialogs when one person says something, and the other understands one thing based in the usual meaning of that word, which leads to a lot of puns and comedy shows :D

Sometimes, the meaning of one kanji can be so much helpful when there are new words (as in this series) so we only need to separate the word or just go by the meaning of each one and form the English word, which is difficult in a sense.

In Spanish things are just great, pronunciation is quit rich, so there are no problem with adapting names, it is somehow contextual, and the several grammatical rules makes easy to portray the nuance and the word play.
That's why I switched from Jap-Eng to Jap-Spa.

Which makes easier to read and tl is the most of books you read. For LN, manga, and others you will have to learn more vocabulary and some slangs that you won't see in a Japanesse class btw.

If anime audience can understand NGE, then MKnR shouldn't be too difficult to understand. We'll need a lot of monologue and explanation scenes for that though.

But I think it's impossible to become a TV-drama.

Miyuki assault Tatsuya?, I don't think she can do it without him allowing it. With his 'Instant Edios system restore', it's almost impossible to make him faint with magic. Add his Taijutsu in, and Miyuki gonna need a lot of help just to get him under her crotch, let alone strip off his underwear

It's more they changed the exposition of events, since the explanation was narrated instead in the LN. That kind of storytelling doesn't work very well in manga.

I think Miyuki overdid it with the poor terrorists. They just tried to hurt Tatsuya, but there couldn't possibly do so. Her entire clan on the other hand...

I hope that Miyuki will someday use harsh insulting word directly towards her family, they're worse than any antagonists in the entire story so far...

he pretty much wrote it off as a joke on her part, though he knew she was serious. He also said she should at least wait until he is licensed (though technically it is not a legal requirement) and she simply accepted that response. No one else was present at the time, and she did not mean "exclusive" as in an Engineer just for her, but the only Engineer that would work for her family.

There are works destined to be made into a doujinshi and there are those that aren't. Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei is NOT destined to be made into a doujinshi. Miyuki is too pure and anyone who defiles her MUST DIE. I'm sure Tatsuya would agree with me.
