View Full Version : Licensed Kaleido Star?
Is anyone watching Kaleido Star? I didn't expect too much talk about it since it was licensed way before it started airing but it really is one of the better animes I've seen in a while. It's light on action but it really catches your attention with the beautiful animation and likeable characters. It's nothing really original aside from the circus theme but it does everything so well especially in the character development department. If you haven't seen it yet, I suggest you check it out and if you have seen it, share some of your opinions and thougts on it. :D
I saw one episode of this show just to check it out and found it interesting. GONZO did anothre good job animating this. I have the other episodes just doesn't have time to see them. Not really on my must see list, but I'll see it eventually. ;)

I happen to like Kaleido Star a lot. Sora is really cute with all her quirks and mannerisms but I think Fool is the real star of the show. Too bad he doesnt get very much screen time. I think the show would have been better served as a 26 ep series instead of 52 because sometimes I feel the story is too strung out. Oh, I also love the music in it too.
Yeah, the music in this series is great. Does anyone know the name of name of the second opening?

The second op is yakusoku no basyo e by Chihiro Yonekura
Thanks alot. And from what I just read today, I think the series is supposed to be 39 episodes. I may be wrong though.

Yeah, Season 2 ends at 25 so Ep 51 is indeed the end.

Although ep 26 wasnt the ending I would have been quite satisfied if they ended the series at that episode. The series had its ups and downs but the mystical act performance at the end made it all worthwhile. Even I got chills watching it.

Its already out?
I just saw a trailer for it in one of the Newtype magazine DVDs. And it looks really pretty. But I thought that it didn't come out yet.
I can't believe its 52 eps!!! Yet another super expensive series. >_<' I wish they would put 10 eps. on one DVD ^^

I like this series. I have all the fansubs and I think I will buy this on DVD. :)
Kaleido Star was made possible thanks to the ingenious imagination of Junichi Satou. His artwork genius and directorial style formed a scenario of embellishing imagery, a delightful visual-style, and above the story of a girl who teaches US to continue to put effort, heart, and work into our dreams without giving up regardless how terrible or complicated the adversities will turn out to be.
The second OP theme, "Yakosuko no Basho e", is a beautiful treat to listen again and again. As also the third ED theme, "Escape".
I'm definitely convinced to save money for the DVD's now that they have been released.
<---is (im)patiently awaiting the release of vol. 2...
hehe...i like it, but some people hate it ^_^
I plan on getting the first 2 seasons (1-26 epsiodes), although I've already seen it on fansubs...
I wonder if ADV is gonna release 3rd and 4th...?
I finally found the first disk today and watched it all. I'm so used to shoujo having low animation budgets that I was really blown away by Kaleido Star. So many cute outfits, too... even if there aren't many yet I'd be caught dead cosplaying. ^_^ I'm definately getting the second disk next week.
My favorite character design so far is Mia, but there's a lot of good ones. I also like how Sora was sensable enough to tie her hair up for the first silly costume. (Yeah, I really go for the costume aspect of shoujo. ;p) Unfortunately the dvd insert seems to have not only spoilers for the first disk, but the description for Yuri has a spoiler not even in the first five episodes! Oh well.
I look forward to sampling the dub soon. With a mostly American cast, the casting better be good!
Kaleido circus reminds me of Circus O'lea (which I know I misspelt). I wonder if the production was at all infuenced by them.

it most definately was
in one part of the series, they go to France, where Cirque de Sole originated
and yeah ADV will very likely release the entire series (they did so with Saiyuki, and Super GALS i think, and they already have a lot of money riding on Kaleido Star what with the toy deal and everything)
plus it'd be kinda pointless to license all 51 episodes and only release 26 0_o (we're not talking about 4kids/FUNimation here after all...)
Just wondering if ADV is going to release also episodes 27 and 28 along with the next DVD release once they finish dubbing the first season.
I've heard that those two episodes are nothing more than review episodes, summarizing most of the events happened during the first 26 episodes; like a video collage of parts of many episodes jointed together but no new footage displayed.
Therefore, IMO, I think ADV should just drop them out. I mean what's the point of licensing two episodes that do not provide new video footage whatsoever and just retell what occured within the first half of the series.
Another note:
Kaleido Star third ED theme song, Escape, sounds to me like an image theme song extracted from Revolutionary Girl Utena.

It's sort of a combo sports drama/shoujo romance like Yawara! or Princess Nine. It's about a girl who "runs away to join the circus" and winds up with a bad-girl rival on her hands. A lot of people like it, so there really isn't any reason not to check it out.

it's quite interesting, almost everything about the show is "different" from the average (even though some of the episode mini-plots may be cliche, the way the characters deal with their problems have a touch of originality...Sora, Fool, and Sarah are absolute riots :))
the animation is top notch, the moves they perform are super detailed (even though they use similar frames for certain techniques, when Sora performs the Golden Phoenix, for instance, the perspectives and such are the same as when Layla performs it)
overall, it's a must see

No, really....Rosetta is the greatest Kaleidostar....if you know what I mean.
I watched the first episode on a Newtype DVD and was amazed - I'd love to start collecting it on DVD, but at the moment I've got to make sure I've got enough money set aside to keep up with Gravitation's releases; I want to make sure I can get each disc with the backstage pass that RightStuf is giving out. So, for the meantime, that means no Kaleido Star.

Back to Kaleido Star... If you want to watch that show, you NEED to get it on DVD. This show's visuals are an important part of it and no mather the quality of the fansub, it's equal to a pile of poo compared to the DVDs. ADV also realeases it with an acceptable 5~4 episodes per disc, but with no extras worth mentioning. GET THE DVDs.
First time I've seen a Quebec separatist on a forum before.

OOh...I really like this series very much...although I've seen many places call it 'mahou shoujo', it's more of a variation of it, such as Utena: Fool is the mascot, Sora not only has the power to talk to him but has a very...um...acrobatic ability. Okay....you can read most of what I said at http://www.themanime.org/viewreview.php?id=688 . Oh yes, something they didn't say is that Sora has many frilly outfits....When's the OVA coming out?
For those LatinAmericans and Spanish-speakers who happen to be members of AnimeSuki, I'm delighted to announce you all that Kaleido Star will begin broadcast in México.
Cartoon Network of LatinAmerica as of next Monday will air Kaleido Star weekdays, 04:00 p.m. (USA Central Time Zone)
Likely, for the rest of LatinAmerica will also be the same.
Since a time ago, I always hoped that Kaleido Star will ended airing in my country, and after seeing the promo in LA Cartoon Network, my wish became true.

The new OVA was just released anybody watch it yet?
It is mainly about Layla and we get to find out a lot about her past; she even cuts her hair short. This OVA was ok a lot of talking, humor, flashbacks, 2 min of performance at the end of the new show "legend of phoenix," and best of all some fool fun. I wish there was another season but who knows.
Will there be another future release of Kaleido Star?
Seen the Legend of Phoenix OVA. Tale of Layla encountering again her original self.

There's one more announced OVA, so depending on what it contains, yes or no.
We all know by now that Rossetta is the true "star." And there's a lot of mystery regarding Fool's past. But obviously things haven't played out fully yet. If they manage to somehow defy the laws of space and time and resolve everything in a single OVA, then we won't see another season.
Otherwise, there's a possibility, although it depends more on demand and sales than it does on an actual need to continue the plot.
Any romance concept incorporated into this anime? ;)

There are several points where boyxgirl come into play, of course for poor Ken Robbins the words "He's not my boyfriend..." by Sora should count as tragic comedy :heh:

I've seen that before, but I've never seen where they got that (apparently quite limited) information from. I always assumed nothing would come of it, since there's so little information and I've never seen it mentioned in more than two places... not to mention that this limited information surfaced -before- the Layla OVA.

Well I just completed Kaleido Star and I must say it is brilliant. Junichi Sato really knows his way around, having been an important staff member (mostly director and storyboard) of most (if not all) of the animated Sailor Moon series.
I even found myself liking May and Leon along the way (who I despised at the start).
My favourite characters would be (excluding Sora):
Rosetta
Layla
Mia
Anna
Yuri
Ken
Fool
Actually I don't think I really disliked any character when the end of the show came around, it's truly a great series.
The powerful bond between Sora and Layla and their relationship is marvelous.
The Japanese voice acting was top-notch, the music was top-notch (Mina Kubota, the woman behind the Kannaduki no Miko OST and the composer of ARIA's OP Undine), the imagery was outstanding, the story was excellent. I could use all sorts of positive adjectives to describe every point of the series.
I was grabbed from episode one and the ride never stopped from there. There were some truly moving parts in the series.
Eh... now I sound like a maniac :eyespin::heh:
I would recommend this to just about anyone. I didn't think this'd be my cup of tea but what do you know? It's now somewhere in my favourite anime list (and it's ranked VERY HIGH). It's basically Comedy and Drama (I would also add Action/Adventure in there too).
PS: Rosetta pwnz.

Well I just completed Kaleido Star and I must say it is brilliant.
I'm just about finished with it, and I agree completely. I've especially liked the second season, with its many twists and turns. It was fabulous how Sora tried to become the "true star" following Layla's path and suffered through all the disillusionment before she found her own way. You don't see that story told nearly as often as it should be.

You don't want to be spoiled. It has one of the best endings in recent anime, and I'm sure you do not want to be disappointed by knowing how it ends. All I can say is, it moved me to tears of joy and happiness - a real "feel-good" warmth in my heart.

Seriously, half the fun is getting there because it comes after the girl has to overcome yet another near impossible challenge. If they had stopped there it would have been good, but her last act for the season was another level above that.

That is one of my favorite things about this series. I don't see the need to have every female lead look for love. Generally speaking this series is pretty predictable but it does a good job of not following the formulas too closely.
Hopefully, the second season gets better after volume 2 though. Leon feels like a retread of some themes from the first season and May is just too cartoony. Kaleido Star (even during the first season) gets pretty cheesy at times and May doesn't help by calling out her moves and growling at Sora.
I love Kaleido Star. My friend got it for me when he went to Vietnam. It was obviously a boot-leg copy, though. The english subtitles often didn't make sense and most of the second season's subtitles were in chinese, so I definitley want to get a better copy so I can see the whole story.
THe animation is beautiful and the circus scenes were amazingly choreographed. The only thing that bugged me was Sora's hair. I wish it had more movement, but other than that, everything was great!

I just finished watching the first season, and wow that was a magical ending. I was literally in tears. I havn't been so deeply moved by a scene like this for a while.
I was a little upset that it ended so suddenly as if they just pulled the plug. I know theres a whole second season after this but I think I'll wait for the thinpack set before I see it.
On that note, how is the second season in comparison? I'm sure it'll be just as good but I've heard that it's quite different somehow.
My favourite characters were Sora, Rossetta and Layla.
Also, despite the fact that I hated them at first, towards the end I fell in love with Charlotte and Julie (thats their names right?) the pair who are always full of themselves. Will they be showing up more often or not? I don't recall ever actually seeing them perform.

The second season gets off to a rocky start. There are a couple of new characters introduced who are really annoying, and Sora isn't quite sure of what she wants to do with herself. But if you can stick with it, I thought the second season ended even better than the first one did.
Ah. I love Kaleido Star. I just started watching it and it's pretty good to say the least.
Anna and Rosetta pwn ;o
I like watching a Kaleido Star with my shoujo ai goggles on 8D
Well, I'm new to Kaleido Star (just watched episode 1) and I must say, I'm highly impressed. :D I hope it gets better and doesn't go downhill like The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.
Ah. Finally finished this series! So here are my final thoughts...
If you ever have ANY interest at all, I highly recommend this anime. After watching this series, I guess you can say that I'm...enlightened ^^; Either that, I was just too into this series. But seriously, Kaleido Star is one of the best series in its genre and now has a special place in my heart xp It's a very inspirational anime so if you're ever down in the dumps like I was, give this a shot instead of popping pills or something o.O;
I like the character development here. In the beginning, I hated a lot of the characters, but after awhile, I came to love them ^^; Sora's personality and determination is very admirable. After watching her, I feel like I need to change myself in some way ^^;
The 1st season was awesome. It made me cry at the end XD The 2nd season got off to a rocky start, but it started getting better after a couple of episodes. There are more filler eps in the 2nd season too. But at least Sora learns something so that she can over come her problems in those filler eps :3
I love the performances. They're all so bright and pretty ~(*o*)~ But they might put ya in a seizure with all that lol Either way, everytime Sora performs, I always get chills wondering if she'll be alright or if she'll totally miss up DX

It looks like we'll be getting the K* parody OVA after all (source: official home page (http://www.kaleidostar.jp/)). Having just finished the series and the OVAs, I'm looking forward to it. I'm not so thrilled about the fact that the characters will be 3D CG, but since they're chibis, I suppose it doesn't matter quite as much. Let's hope they manage to pack a lot of funny moments into those 60 minutes. And let's hope that there will be even more K* to follow!

btw, Ken has to tell Sora how he feels directly or Sora will always thinks of him as a friend.

So far, there are two OVAs released, with a third on the way this summer. We know that ADV has licensed one of them (episode 52), but we're not sure about the remaining two.
Whatever happened to that new OVA was it released and I missed ever seeing it or was it pushed back?
The show actually goes steadily downhill after the first arc, but the slide is relativly mild with a sharp dip at the start of the 2nd season, but managing to work its way back up for the final arc.
The strength of the show is Sora, specifically, Sora doing acrobatics. The weakness is just about everything else to varying degrees. The problem is the series likes to spend too much screentime on the lame/unfunny/annoying supporting characters. The show is great when Sora is center-stage doing her thing, and it degrades when it force-feeds the viewer crapy one-liners, stale slapstick, and other wastes of time.
GUTB the problem with this show is the same problem that Full Moon had, it develops the side characters very well but on the overall storyline most of them (if not all) have very little to do with the end story, In this case there wasn't any rhyme or reasoning to have all the side characters if they don't even really reflect on the overall plot.

I disagree with that, the side characters were very very important in helping Sora's character development too, true that May and Leon were very annoying when they just appeared but thats just to push Sora further. And unlike Full Moon, the main focus of this series was 'friendship' and thats where all the side characters come in
If she hadn't encountered so much difficulties at first, we won't be that touched at the magnificent final scene
And its a terrible pity a lot of the wonderful tracks can't be found anywhere in the osts available, specifically the one for the Swan lake and little Mermaid play

Anyone here that has the thinpak collection able to tell me if there's any noticeable issues with video or audio?

i was trully looking forward to this series and i got all 51 eps... but after around 20 or so i realised that there was no overall archs and that the characters would never resolve any real conflicts. most of all i really hate supremely optimistic characters that believe anything is possible and thats why i hated sora. she'd try to fix and solve anything. also there wasnt really any drama or real conflict for any of the characters like love btw ken and sora, or death or anything serious. so i gave up. waste of time. plus theres no overarching plot. i highly recommend u dont buy it unless ur really into that kind of thing. theres no single REAL tragedy in this show and i had not motivation to keep watching. but to each his own. i was supremely disappointed because i was hoping for some drama or some romance and character developments as a whole, like monster.

You're not alone. I loved watching this show at first but eventually I just started skipping ahead in order to see how it ended. What's sad is I usually will watch anything entirely through to the end, no matter how bad it is, just to say "I've seen it and here's my opinion" but this was one of those rare cases that it started to touch a nerve of mine and where I just couldn't handle it anymore. The skip button became a good friend of mine. :heh:
It is just one of those shows that if they would have kept to the formula and flow that they were using at the beginning it would have been one hell of a show.

It's been a while since i've seen this, so it's possible my perception has been a little skewed. However it hasn't been THAT long (4 - 6 months) since i watched the last 26 episodes.
I'm surprised by the reactions of the latest posts, I for one love this show. First of all, it is quite original. I don't know of many series that focus on something like the circus. The colors and vibrancy was what drew me in, and the characters were what made me fall for this series. There are struggles between characters but no absolutely horrible person exists. And it doesn't have lots and lots of sappy drama like a lot of romances (Bokura ga Ita / Peach Girl).
I personally love optimistic characters, and Sora's definately one of them :heh: watching her struggle throughout the series was great. But her determination makes me want to be more determined in my own pursuits.
I will admit I liked the first 26 episodes a lot more than the second 26. The end challenge for the second set didn't seem nearly as challenging physically and wasn't that astounding (nor did it look as cool) IMO.
Another reason I didn't like the second 26 as much was partially because of the inclusion of two characters. I warmed up to May only at the end of the series, toward the beginning she was more annoying. I'll admit that the way she acted and Sora responded seemed correct, but I just hate that kind of character. Maybe I just missed Layla... The other character was the main male guy.
Anyway, I know everyone doesn't like the same series. But as shown in my sig, this is my third favorite series. The only thing I'm not sure of is the rewatchability (only been able to see this once). And as someone else said, I would have liked for there to have been a little romance between Sora and Ken. Poor Ken!
If you like happy anime, with a bit of conflict to make it interesting, and a fresh plot (for me at least), then check this out!
The show actually goes steadily downhill after the first arc,
Exactly. Everyone has mention all sorts of reasons for this but I would like to add one more. All the characters they introduce in the second season, like May and Rosetta, just can't compare to Layla. I think Layla is just as important as Sora for this show and the interaction between the two is the main plot of the first season. When they take out Layla, they need a strong character to replace her but they fail on that terrribly. So the plot and drama of the second season are dry and hard to relate. People walk away from it.
Wow. People are still interested in this series? I'd recommend the first season but the second season ... not really. It is pretty straight forward. Sora is pretty much 2d dimensional but Layla and the other characters are really interesting. What really made the series interesting for me though was the break from the traditional model of the protagonist always winning, being the best.
The second season unfortunately followed the formula to a T.

"Traditional model"? That sounds more like the American cartoon/animation way. :p
I've seen my share amount of anime where the protagonists don't win in the end (likei in Ganbare Kickers!), or at least don't win all the major events (like in Captain Tsubasa). :)

I'm still waiting for the second season to be released in thin pack, actually.
it is on my anticipation list.
Oh, my! Even myself cannot believe it, but I successfully managed to watch at last all of the episodes that comprise this beautiful masterpiece about having faith on oneself in the pursuit of a dream to make come true.
I am glad to inform you all that today I have watched finally the 51st episode to Kaleido Star, and thus giving main closure to an otaku dream that took me nearly four years to complete.
Back in October 2003 when I heard that Junichi Sato was behind Kaleido Star I wasted no time but to eagerly look forward to the anime, since I have been deeply happy and blissful for his other previous works from that era.
Pretear which I watched back at March 2002, and later Princess Tutu which took me from August to October 2005 to finish all.
I could have finished the TV series earlier back when it got the chance to air in my country through the Latin American Cartoon Network, but I was dismayed with the voices in the Spanish dub particularly Sora's.
Plainly they just sucked and were horrible to keep on listening to them.
I simply then carried on with my life and kept watching other anime as well, but chances fortunately presented where I was able to continue watching the reminder episodes until I reached the fifthieth episode; only pending just the last one to complete the series.
And, hereby, today I lastly watched the 51st episode. Although I liked much the ending and closure for the first season at episode 26, the staff managed to pull the story through for the second season and granting to the viewers the chance to witness the birth of Sora's free-conflict stage, as well as her rising to become the new Kaleido Star.
It quickly passes with Rosetta who is dumbfounded when she sees Fool, though he remained without moving as he did with Sora way back on episode one.
And he comments that the end of an old dream passes the light and magic to give birth to a new one.
I have already finished the main TV series, and about a year ago I watched the second OVA, the one about Layla.
I just will have to wait and sit while I find a chance to watch the first OVA, a.k.a. as the extra episode 52.

Kaleido Star is one of my favorite anime series, along with FullMetal Panic! I own all of Kaleido Star and I'm happy that I do.
Sometimes when I'm really anxious I watch the show b/c it calms me down, its weird that it does, but it does ^^;.
Anywho, I saw the Layla OVA and I LOVED IT. I recommend it to all Kaleido Star fans. Also epi 52 is cute XD lol. And the other Kaleido Star show (done in 3d with chibis of them) is cute and funny.
My favorite song has to be May's character song. I hated May at first, but over time she's grown on me. Same with Leon, he pissed me off with how he treated Sora but, he also grew on me.
Now for Sora, she just got annoying to me after a while ^^;. So did Layla. I actually LIKED the side characters, they were a good diversion from the attention being on Sora all the time. And I didn't like how Sora would cry so much and feel like she couldn't do some things sometimes but that's just me XD.
Hands down the best character in that show was...JONATHAN, talking seal ftw! (Sorry I though he was good comic relief hehe)

i just bought the whole set thin pack - 52 eps, so far so good :)
but the dub is lacking something somehow :(

Really? Because I think the dubs were better than usual. Some character obviously could've been better, but there's a few standouts. I think Sora's done pretty well for the most part.
As for all the 'masterpiece' talk, what can I say? Because it basically IS.
I don't want to be on the Gonzo bash-wagon, but I wish Gonzo tries something truly epic and inspiring like this one again.
I know the show is made almost strictly for girls, but it gave inspiration to me. Most shows tout the whole 'believe in yourself' thing as an extracurricular thing, but not this show.

Finally, I get to watch this series. And yea, I'm not all that impressed with the English version; but I'm stuck with it. Eventually, it'll grow on me. :heh:
===
And it did grow on me... after 4-5 episodes. XD
Watching this series - it's so embarrassingly girly, but it feels good watching Sora. She's so adorable. XD
