This seems to have slipped under the radar... Yasuhiro Yoshiura of Time of Eve fame is back with a new film project to be released sometime during 2012. Here's an ANN article (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2011-12-23/time-of-eve-yoshiura-makes-sakasama-no-patema-film), and here's the official Web site (http://patema.jp/).

That world is beyond anything we ever imagined.

The tunnels run everywhere in this underground world. But even in these narrow, dark spaces, where they must cover themselves in protective clothing, people lead bright and happy, if humble, lives.

The princess of the underground villages, Patema, is consumed with thoughts of a world she hasn't yet seen, and today she's gone exploring through the tunnels once again. She's been particularly interested in one place, the "danger zone" to which entry is forbidden by village code. Fantastic scenery stretches across this wide-open space that no one else has seen. Mayor Ji may get mad at her for going there, but she can't hold back her curiosity.

As she stands looking into the danger zone, just like she always has, she encounters something unexpected. After all, nobody told her what exactly was "dangerous" about this place.

When she is touched by this hidden secret, our story begins...

Hmm ... looks interesting....

Looking at the ANN article there is an addition that the story will be a "boy meets girl" but that it will also be very strange.

Sounds interesting, and the tiny bit of art there is looks very solid. Will keep this on my radar.

Reminds me of Pale Cocoon but looks to go in a different direction. I'm definitely interested.

Yeah my first impression was that he was doing a different version of his Pale Cocoon.

To clarify, this is actually a PV for a short prologue called "Beginning of the Day" that's getting released on Nico Nico and GyaO! over the weekend. It does show a lot of the setting and animation, though. Thumbs up from me.

When I saw this, I thought that the Pale Coccon colony had forgotten that they were on the moon.

First episode of Beginning of the Day has begun streaming (http://ch.nicovideo.jp/channel/patema). It's only about 6mins long, so not much was revealed that isn't in the synopsis, though it is hinted that the reason Patema isn't allowed near the danger zone is because there are others (people? things?) out there. There's also mention of someone who probably was part of their village. I'm assuming that's the boy she will encounter later.
The production is certainly good looking. We have the director's usual active camera moving here and there and switching to first person POV. Voices are okay.

And episode 2 (http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/1332324677) is out.

From what I can gather, it looks like we have two different worlds: Patema's sakasama (upside-down) world, and the surface world that we all know and love where our scheming royal and grassy hill boy reside. Patema used to know someone who journeyed to the surface world, but he left on an expedition and never returned, leaving only the photo that falls up and a few other trinkets as a keepsake.

I think the word Patema and the cloaked man used to refer to each other was koumori ningen, or "bat person". Someone feel free to correct me on this if I'm wrong.

Yes, that is the term they used. I think it's safe to say that right now things are shaping up to involve some greedy corporation (they looked more like that to me) trying to track down Patema's village for whatever greedy reason. The bat people are most likely from the surface and the one who assaulted Patema didn't go beyond the tunnel on fear of dropping. Patema "falling" could mean she winds up on the surface world but that seems a little too early for the story.

saw the 2 beginning of the day eps, it definitely is intriguing. Obviously her guardians are keeping something important from her. That's quite a fall though. Has the release date been fixed yet?

^too much awesomeness. The "turning point" was predictable at this point, but still - soooo much win.

So when she inhaled the air in the shaft in made her able to fly? Unless her world is upside down inside the earth, but don't get the position she was in when we saw her, since she was climbing up, she should have been going towards the sky, and it shouldn't be below her?

This keeps looking better and better.

She fell and then was climbing down(from her pov) to get her bag.
From boy's pov she was climbing up in a very strange way :D And then flew :heh:

Well, the title said it all~Sakasama=reverse->reversed Patema in the boy's world!
The bat person also had a reverse footing/gravity when he entered Patema's world~

So,I think they maybe biological? different or the feeling of gravity is different.

Because of this, the reversed people need to live underground or they would all fly to the sky~

The legend about the outside world is dangerous probably because of this heredity sickness(?)the people have?

The bat person may had been some organization that kidnap underground people for various benefit~of course the evil one~

Is it me, or are these episodes just showing us the beginning of a movie I was going to see to begin with?

Is it me, or are these episodes just showing us the beginning of a movie I was going to see to begin with?

That's exactly what they're trying to do. To bait us with this much awesomeness and force us to pay for the real thing.

Well, initially, I thought they will only show us 6 minutes of the film and that's it. But to go so far as showing 4 episodes, that's something I've never heard of and might be good strategy on their part.

Release has been delayed into next year. (http://patema.jp/blog/archives/169)
Patema Inverted was scheduled to open in 2012, but due to the circumstances of production, it has been postponed to 2013. We would like to apologize to all in the audience who were looking forward to the film, and to everyone in the media who helped spread the word. We're working hard to bring you an even better film and hope that you'll keep waiting for us. Once the details of the release schedule are worked out, we'll report it on this website and other places.
