Yasu x JC Staff with Masayoshi Tanaka = Tora-Dora character designs. Happy.

What I read of the manga very much reminded me of Zetsubo-Sensei(same manga author), meaning its characters talking, talking, and talking. Wonder if JC Staff can make this as interesting as SHAFT did.

This is one of the series I am curious about in the upcoming Summer 2012. I have read the first volume of the manga (I think they are up to ch 12 now?), but I am curious to see what they will do with this series. Somehow it feels this could be a sleeper hit if done well....

It's been a long time since I've seen a Koji Kumeta based series. That alone makes it worth a look.

I'm a bit concerned about what JCStaff will do to this series. I saw an image with the girls in school uniforms, which bothers me because they explicitly stated their age in the manga and the fact that they're already done with school.

Considering their history, I'm worried that they might deviate from the source material again.

You sure that wasn't some fanart? There's nothing like that in any of the official art I've seen.
Squid Girl was faithfull overall from what I've heard so I expect this to be as well.

Look at Joshiraku. The girls are in their school uniforms. Someone else on another forum also found the same image on the main site here (http://www.starchild.co.jp/special/joshiraku/images/main.png), but the image was removed.

Since it was in the "special" part of the website along with twitter avatars and wallpapers it could just have been some sort of non canon promo image,I've seen those before.

So I'm not really worried.

I probably have the stupidest sense of humor, but I found this funnier than Binbougami (and I already love that). The jokes are soooooooo badddd, but damn they're crazy fun (especially that last one and the 4th wall breaking ones in the beginning and that dog one nearly drove me up the walls and and that naked chara intro was so funny too :D:D:D).

I had the hardest time remembering their names, then someone suggested look up their neta on wiki and I seriously burst out laughing how it is afterward. Also, anyone have a gif of that thing where they did this in the op?

http://www.neozeed.net/files/tayutamashadowdancing.gif

Anyway, highly recommended 10/10 (9/10 for the episode, 11/10 for the ED); here's a group pic too

Yay, the season wouldn't be complete without it.

I watched the raw from beginning to end. For the record, I speak almost no Japanese. I sometimes got what they were talking about, but not what they're actually saying. I had no idea what was going on at all, but it looks and sounds gorgeous. I will watch it raw if I have to. (Yes, I'm weird like that.)

territory : North = Russia ( Kuril Islands dispute )
men : Northwest = North Korea ( abduction of Japanese citizens )
technology : West = South Korea and/or China ( technology theft )
submarine materials : Southwest = China / Taiwan ( right for submarine materials )
our money : Tokyo ( Diet ) = Japanese government ( taxes )

It's a very political joke and dangerous venture.
But funny.

Rakugo is one of those things that has a tough time crossing the cultural barrier. Dealing with puns and wordplay, from subbers I've talked to, can be like cancer. Sometimes it is Cancer. I was a little cautious about picking up this, given the group, but if there was ever a show that required creative translator input, they're pretty trustworthy... and the sub turned out pretty good. I laughed, a few times. And the show was as good as I thought it would be.

Koji Kumeta's writing shines through, and, while I would've loved to see what Shaft and Shinbo would've done with the material (SZS and Hidamari defined Shaft's image for me, even years later), JC Staff did a pretty good job. And like SZS, the fourth wall was broken down within moments of the show beginning. Most of it was just puns and Kumeta's observational humor, but the closing gag was... quite pointed.

There are many different types of humor on display this anime season. From Jinrui's dry and surreal humor to Yuru Yuri's character focused humor, and now this... kudos to the translators, and I look forward to future installments.

CWW

My, what a diverse cast we have. They supplement each other very well. I can't pick a favourite yet nor do I actively dislike anyone, which should tell a lot. The Rakugo bits weren't laugh-out funny, but I felt it showed the contrast between the different gags nicely. The writing is solid. Unlike Binbougami-ge, it doesn't pretend to have a plot. I can watch it solely for the gags instead of scratching my head to the inane plot development. Or in Jinrui's case, the insanity, which may or may not be caused by drug abuse.

SQA
2012-07-08, 21:54
Very fun. A different type of comedy series, but you have to appreciate a 4th wall breaking moment at the start of the episode about why they're being made into an anime in the first place. :)

Utsuro no Hako
2012-07-08, 23:08
I believe that's a first -- an anime questioning its own purpose in existence within the first five minutes of episode one.

Once more JC Staff proves that the quality of their work is inversely proportional to the number of fantastical elements in the story. If only they'd stick to shows that are grounded in reality, they'd be one of the best studios around. But I suppose it's the ZnTs and Hidan no Arias that pay for Joshirakus and Kimi to Bokus.

Midonin
2012-07-08, 23:15
When dealing with Koji Kumeta, "reality" (and "sanity") are always questionable. We already have our first sign of something unusual with the person in the wrestling mask.

Ooh Rakugo. Must admit, it's me loving the drama Tiger&Dragon that piqued my interest in this. But alas, it's less about the actual Rakugo and more about the hijinks that involve those who do the Rakugo.

As for the episode itself, I liked when they broke they fourth wall. THAT was a riot to watch. Thing is, A LOT of the jokes apart from that were pretty much lost in translation, kind of like Seitokai Yakuindomo. Which, as much as I tried to love it, just didn't mesh well with me unfortunately.

Seitokai no Ichizon had already done that (to great effect) right off the bat before the OP nearly three years ago. :p I wouldn't be surprised if others have done it even before that, they're just not coming to mind right now.

So how much knowledge of japanese language/culture will we need to know to get the jokes? Because the opinion of the only group subbing this is "If you don’t speak Japanese, you probably won’t enjoy this show. If you somehow do enjoy this show, you are probably lying to yourself because you like the girls."

"If you don’t speak Japanese, you probably won’t enjoy this show. If you somehow do enjoy this show, you are probably lying to yourself because you like the girls."

But I don't lie to myself. I like the girls. (Cow Pyjamas! :heh: ) Which is why "This show contains unobtrusive dialogue so you can admire the cuteness of the girls" resonated.

I like the pacing of the show, too. So even if I don't get something, it'll be over quickly. I loved the dog-kanji gig that ended in a new kanji for "pet deprivation syndrome".

Also, the things I don't get, I may get later. Or maybe never, but that won't really matter. (An example of what I mean: One of the first comedies I watched was Minami Ke. There's a sketch where Kanna hangs Chiaki into the window as a teru teru bozu. When I first saw that, it was odd. Years later I rewatched it, got it, and found it hilarious.) The point? If you don't challenge yourself you won't learn.

It's the cute-appeal on the surface + learning potential if you wish to go deeper that made this show one of my most anticipated this season (and I'm forever grateful to the fansubbers for doing it). I'd have watched it in Japanese if I would have had to (and my Japanese is attrocious).

I'll definitely follow the thread in the hope that some things get explained (like Dormeur's very helpful and interesting explanations about the give-us-back thingie [was especially puzzled about the technology]).

I've been eagerly awaiting this one, and while I'd been a bit doubtful that anyone but Shinbo could do justice to Kumeta's material, I think JC Staff did a good job here.

You've got to love a show that takes a wrecking ball to the fourth wall right from the start.

I suspect that as with quite a few bits of Zetsubou Sensei there's a lot of nuance that's lost if you don't understand the Japanese, and probably some that's lost if you're not au fait with Japanese politics.

Glad to see it getting subbed as I'd feared it would be 'too Japanese' and not exciting enough for most fansubbers.

Just watched the first episode and... I was skeptical since it sort of reminds me of Lucky Star (the conversation aspect), but this show really shows promise. Despite not being able to comprehend and keep up with most of the girl talk most of the time, the scenes and the conversations were a blast to listen too.

Shouting "Give it back" to a stormy sea...weird but really unique, I'm really liking where this is going. I'm going to give this a shot, and as long as the interactions keeps getting creative, funny and neat, then we've got a great show on our hands. This is my favourite show of the season. Less laugh out loud funny than Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita, on account of indeed being more relaxed and distinctively cultural. On the other hand, for precisely those reasons, it's more consistent. JC Staff's clean/solid animation being put to good use here; I greatly enjoyed their other recent seinen comedy, Kill Me Baby, as well.

Also, dat ED. Holy shit, man, it's Hyadain + Momoiro Clover + the fucking Yoshida brothers. Too fucking gorgeous.

Having read a small bit of the manga, I also feel like the personalities of each the girls came out really well as well. They're already quite distinctive in my mind, although of course we haven't seen anything yet. An attempt at a tentative ranking:

Turquoise (Gan) = Yellow (Kigu) = Red (Marii) = Black (Kukuru) = Maroon (Tetra)

Anyway, to explain a few trivial aspects of the puns/oral dialogue I picked up:

- Within the first third of the episode, the girls first start off talking about "acting normally"/"things you do normally", and then move onto "casual clothing". In Japanese, the "normal" and "casual" parts were actually based on the same word, 普段 ("fudan"), meaning "usual". When you add 着 ("gi", i.e. "clothing") to the end, you get 普段着 ("fudangi") which is the aforementioned casual-wear. It's this sense of "usual" == things you always do which leads them to make the connection to "casual" == things you always wear, i.e. uniforms, pajamas.

- in the second section, Tetra first comments that it's a bit "unexpected" that Kigu is listening to death metal. When Gan shows up in her gothloli getup, she asks "what's unexpected?" as a followup to that comment. However, Tetra and Kigu ignore her, commenting "unexpected" in regards to her clothes, which is what leads Gan to asking "what is?" again.

By the way, did anyone get the ~issue word twisters in japanese?
Also in the second section, is the "tissue" pun people have been inquiring about. First of all, regarding the setup for the pun: in Japanese, the word for "wind" (as a fan produces) is 風 ("kaze"), whereas in slang within certain dramatic/performing industries, a handtowel/washcloth is called a まんだら ("mandara"). Whereas "kaze" is a commonplace word, "mandala" is an unusual construction, so Gan's "tissue" question was basically her asking "why is a mandala called a mandala?"
The lines which follow are basically all simple puns on "mandara" (most of them on "dara", which is an onomatopoeia for "slovenly" or "lazy"), i.e.:
そこの有問だらだらしない。 "Soko no umon daradara shinai."
人生我慢だらけの略かも。 "Jinseigaman darake no ryaku kamo."
自慢ダライ様! "Jiman Dalai-sama!"
When Marii appears:
だらしない。 "Darashinai."
And later:
成る程。有問だらしない。 "Naruhodo. Umon darashinai."

- in the third part, a note about the "dogs are only good for practicing" joke: this was briefly brushed upon in the notes posted on the translator's blog, but shamisen (the instruments) are traditionally made with animal skin. The skin which produces the best sound is commonly considered to be cat skin, while dog skin is more common and lower quality; thus everybody's horrified expressions when Kigu mistakes what Gan means by "practice" and suggests her own dog for a participant.

空琉美遊亭丸京 (kuurubiyuutei gankyou), our bespectacled heroine. The first name is “cool beauty” while gankyou means “glasses” if written with different characters (眼鏡).
蕪羅亭魔梨威 (buratei marii), the red haired girl. Bloody Mary.
防波亭手寅 (bouhatei tetora): the purple haired girl. 防波堤 (bouhatei) means “breakwater” and tetora is for “tetrapod” (written as “palmtop tiger”).
波浪浮亭木胡桃 (haroukitei kigurumi): the blonde girl. Hello Kitty character costume (着ぐるみ).
暗落亭苦来 (anrakutei kukuru): the depressed girl. The anraku part either stands for “unlucky” or “euthanasia” (安楽死 anrakushi). 括る (kukuru) means to hang oneself.

The main cast:

http://img37.imageshack.us/img37/4417/seiyus.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/37/seiyus.jpg/)

(l-r) Nanjou Yoshino, Sakura Ayane, Koiwai Kotori, Yamamoto Nozomi, Gotou Saori.

Nanjou-san is the current lead singer in fripSide and was Maria Osawa in Canaan. Sakura-san was Merry in Dream-Eater Merry. Koiwai-san is also a songwriter; this is her second anime role. Yamamoto-san is also fairly new; she was Yukimura in Haganai. Gotou-san starred in a previous rakugo anime, Rakugo Tennyou Oyui, in 2006.

To me, Nanjou and Gotou, with their very Asian faces, are two of the most attractive of all seiyuus. Nanjou likes to disguise herself with those cool glasses, lol. Check out this PV (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oyR7ORC7iRM&feature=related) for another view. Gotou is deeply fey (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OgV3lrP5uDs), but with a bit of steel behind her excessive femininity.

I find this a difficult anime, depending as it does on Japanese puns for much of its humour. The translation I saw did a nice job making them work in English.

I noticed that when the cast was announced. She was also in the previous Kumeta series as Ai Kaga. The difference in Yui and Kukuru is pretty large. Yui is your typical hyperactive protagonist, while Kukuru is... eccentric. She's got a good range.

This.

It's nice to see a different facet of Japanese culture, especially one that is so easily overlooked. I loved how this show established right of the bat that you shouldn't take it too seriously and knows how to play its audience. Seitokai no Ichizon already showed that a show filled with referential humor works, even more so if you understand what they are referring to.

These girls are definitely masters in derailing a conversation. Loved the Jehova's Witness scene. And I also liked how, in the second half, no one mentioned the 6th girl in the room, wearing that mask. And then we had Kukuru feigning(?) pregnancy. The direction felt much stiffer in this episode...no use of the atmospheric bgm they had in episode 1. Also, "dark" Kigu's voice was too exaggerated/unnatural and lacked enunciation, so I was kinda disappointed with that.

Ep 2 was not really on the same level as the first one, IMO. But, oh well. I suppose I will wait hopefully for extra notes or whatever before going through and trying to understand all of the references.

Hmm... enjoyed this episode more than last. Either it's less focused on stuff natives would only get, or the episode translated better into English. Regardless, Kigu was a riot with them expecting her to be all innocent, when she is anything but. Mari still is the straight man, but Kukuru still is my favourite as she practically drives the hilarity.

Coming in on a punchline is one of the best ways to set up a joke. But this show continues to prove why it's my favorite of the season thus far. The jokes were just as strong as they were last week. While before, I compared Yuru Yuri's talking sections to Joshiraku, now I can do the reverse. Both shows have had a "What would you if you won the lottery?" talk within the past week, but the difference between the two segments is a huge contrast. For one, Yuru Yuri involved a lot less murder. The third segment stood out as my favorite, with the talk of smelling nipples and pregnancy. Is it lowbrow? Well, of course it is, but it made for an entertaining watch. Nobody even commented on the masked girl in the background, drinking tea through her mask. (So she doesn't have Shurikenger's abilities.) Love Kukuru's taste in baby names.

Kigu's proving to be a fascinating character, in a very Akira Kogami sort of way. She plays the cute role, but knows beneath it that her real personality is a little different. Also, loved Kukuru's comment about switching up the cast, as she's the only one of the Joshiraku Five who retains her original self from the Drama CDs. Mary, for example, was originally played by Kana Asumi. Ayane Sakura's doing a great job, though.

Also, "dark" Kigu's voice was too exaggerated/unnatural and lacked enunciation, so I was kinda disappointed with that....I preferred ep2, probably for exactly those reasons. It seemed flatter and more absurd, less smooth and normal. The way it leapt around pleased me. And all of Kigu's voices (normal, cutesy, dark) worked for me (seiyuu: Koiwai Kotori). Gotou Saori as Kukuru really worked for me. The seiyuu's natural weirdness came through.

And I liked Nanjou Yoshino as glasses-girl. Which she is in real life: http://i.imgur.com/bUclS.jpg

Joshiraku has also been delayed by the Olympics. On the other hand, that gives gg more time to catch up on episodes 3/4... but gives them two to work once it comes back.

Sol Falling
2012-07-29, 05:11
Nah, most of the Olympic delays only apply to the particular TV station. I think in Joshiraku's case the airings for the next couple ep.s will only be delayed one day into Friday.

I still haven't caught the third and fourth episodes...perhaps for the moment I might as well try watching raw. I guess if gg's subs for ep. 3 don't come up by tomorrow, I'll give it a go.

Also, for the record I wonder if people here know about the kumetan wiki (http://wiki.kumetan.net/index.php?%E3%81%98%E3%82%87%E3%81%97%E3%82%89%E3% 81%8F%E3%82%A2%E3%83%8B%E3%83%A1%E3%83%AA%E3%82%B9 %E3%83%88). Probably a more or less complete index for references in Kumeta series, so far as his Japanese fans have figured out. Unfortunately/as expected, in Japanese, but still somewhat navigable. Good to use for cross-checking in cases where translation notes might not be thorough enough.

There we go. Been a bit of a wait for episode 3, but totally worth it.

The first segment may have begun on a note of Valentines' Day, but it didn't stay there for long. Ayane Sakura is doing a great job as Marii. The moment when she started ranting about her past life was a lot of fun to watch. And for being the least feminine of the group, she seems to be the one most prone to doing fanservice shots.

For the second sketch, loved Kururu reading out the good luck fortune with just as much passion as the bad luck one. But the final segment was the best. Tetora's got a massive amount of happiness energy, the opposite of whatever Akarin is afflicted with. And the moment when the walls fell around her was very Buster Keaton-esque. And of course, the exploding TV.

This show probably takes the longest to get subs for, but that makes it even sweeter. Pure, undiluted silliness. Loving it.

They question Marii's womanhood, yet they stripped her in the first 5 minutes of the first episode. Kinda surprised she didn't cover that in this episode. Oh well, it was fun to hear Marii try her best to disprove the claim anyway.

And lol @ Tetora's incredible luck. Reminds me of Ichiko from Binbougami, another person whose good fortune is detrimental to that of others.

Ahh, episode 3! There you are! We have been anxiously awaiting your juicy arrival and your addictive entertainment :heh:

Loved the start with Marii XD Every few seconds she would gain hope that a friend was taking her side, then it immediately gets crushed :heh: Hmm...should I be replacing those 'She' and 'her' with 'him' and 'his'....I hope not :heh: Her methods of proving that she was a girl was extreme, but satisfying and needed :p But damn she had quite a few bad experiences in the past 0_0 Swapped at birth? She can really remember that far back? XD

Kukuru got a great misfortune! Nooo! My favourite character can't have a future of sadness and depression! :(

Woah, Tetora is like a good like charm! I want to have one of her around me 24/7 :heh:

Episode seemed to have a ton of content, so much change of scenery.
Do they release show budgets for anime? Curious what the budget for Joshiraku, since its obviously one of the more low-budget shows this season.

I liked Marii's "I really wanted to play the fairy" line delivery.
Baby switch line was funny.

I was wondering about the ages of the girls.
Not sure if they were past High School age, or if they were high school age, but choose to not do high school and instead just pursue rakugo.
But I guess the part when they were eating answers my question since it showed all but 4 drinking alcohol during the visit to the gate. I assume the blonde one is the youngest of the bunch. Or a newcomer.

During the flashback of the greenhaired one, all 4 other than the blonde were together from elementary school onwards, and even joined the rakugo business together. Talk about eternal bonds of friendship.

Tetora's luck is godly.

Laughed at the ending episode punchline. Where the whole skit started with them all passed out in an explosion and was like "Lets see how this all ended up happening"

And the end is the watermelon somehow exploding. WTF? lol. Ended suddenly like a rakugo story.

I get the joke, but I still don't get the joke. The mangaka is known for making fun of Ken Akamatsu. In this show, the anime is making fun someone. He's probably from the anime industry. By the way, the third show about the giant hasn't been animated yet. It's famous, thanks to the manga publisher's ad. The story is also engaging.

I still don't know who is this Miura. I also find out that anime break dance is more than just fan made GIF files. It's actually feasible for the dance show.

Kukuru wants to visit TV talent's shop. Marii wants to see Takenoko-zoku. However, neither exists now. Although it proposes that Gankyou will go to Ura-Hara (under harajyuku), since Ura has a bad meaning, Marii and Kukuru propose Chou-hara (Super harajuku) as a good name. Marii cannot pronounce the name of the TV talent who shows up for a magazine. They discuss a tongue twister. Kigu buys crepe and four persons wonder. Tetra also buys crepe and is admired by Marii. Although all the members buy crepe, Marii does not eat. Marii cannot accept the price of crepe, how to eat, and the cultural action used as a background. Marii asks the type of its skin and Tetra answers that it is a big-sisterly disposition. Tetra says that a tattoo suits the back of Marii. Gankyou dominated this episode. With a physical and verbal presence. At first, I thought the show putting its "contains ordinary dialogue" message after Gankyou socked Marii in the face was merely a coincidence. Then it became clear they were doing it deliberately. Didn't take us very long for a reference to Zetsubou Sensei - I was expecting it sooner. This show also seems to be developing a strange motif involving nipples. That's twice doing something with them has come up. Touching them and having them turn into nuclear missiles.

The highlight of the second sketch was easily landing in Comiket. Most of the cast of Zero no Tsukaima, Milky Holmes, Kill Me Baby (ie. other JC Staff shows) were there in cosplay form. Seeing Milky Holmes and KMB acknowledged is great in itself. The stuff with Kukuru on the train was fun, too. Wordplay gags always get to me, and the hubbub around 人/入 and variations thereof was fun. Gankyou's thing for butts also established itself here.

Watching the moon via film was... bizarre. This was easily the strangest segment in the whole show. Seeing Gankyou be on the recieving end of slapstick after her punch-out with Marii in the first segment got a laugh, but it only lasted for so long, once it became clear that the Rabbit both has seven lives, and hurts something fierce. Not even Teenage Mutant Ninja Kigu can stop him. Gan's "It looks like a Rorschach test!" was one of my favorite lines, and she can beatbox rather awesomely.

This week belongs to Gankyou, but everyone had their moments. Love this show.

The glasses part was amusing considering Gankyou's strength and Mari getting the short end of the stick. It's also really amusing that they were mentioning three stupid looking characters from a familiar series written by the same author who in turn created the said series of this thread. The other bits were amusing and interesting, but yeah, Gankyou really shined this episode.

The train part felt lacking. The cosplay convention scene was interesting because of the JC Staff references, won't get into them, but it was worth watching.

Segment three was by far the best one because Gankyo getting the same treatment has Mari did in segment one. The moon watching and observing bit was a blast to watch and funny too. The angry rabbit thing with Mari at the end...didn't seem right, but was funny, weird...:eyespin:

Yuri-Kamome is a name of Black-headed Gull in Japan. It is known by the literary work that this bird was in Tokyo from the 10th century.
It is a cant Yuri (Lilium) indicates a soft lesbian to be. It is the word which occurred spontaneously as an opposite word of gay magazine "Bara-Zoku" (Rose-tribe) which existed once. Please watch Yuru-Yuri about an interpretation.
Kugu has asked whether Yuri-Kamome is Yuri.

Joshiraku ep6

1/3 「四枚起承」"Four introduction and development"
Gankyou graduated. Marii, Tetra, Kukuru, and Kigu enjoy a kotatsu. They admire the merit of the rationality of the 4, economical efficiency, and luck. Moreover, They discuss how the 5 is bad. They enjoy big-four boss play and 4-Koma play.
Although they try to return soon, the room is shut and cannot return. The power supply of the room is turned off soon and the temperature of the room falls.

I'll go in reverse on this one, because the third segment had all the best gags. I never knew a Mongolian spot could be a charm point. It typically goes away by puberty, which would explain why you rarely see it in anime. (It also requires butt shots.) Yet another strike against Marii. The casual tossing aside for Gankyou at her "graduation" was great, too. After watching the K-ON! movie not too long ago, seeing graduation being mocked to hell and back made it extra-special. But not as special as the first thing to get my attention when I looked at episode five pictures a few days ago specifically because the Mongolian spot had been turning up in pixiv fanart and I was curious why people were drawing Marii with a blue spot on her ass.

Sentai parodies.

How I love Sentai parodies and homages and allusions and all manner of referencing. Four man teams are extremely rare, and for some reason people always depict Sentai teams fighting against Shocker troops, which has only happened once. Though combining 美 into the Shocker skeleton design was clever. For once, someone acknowledged the girl in the wrestling mask! A good EEEEEEEEEE! to you.

The second segment was also great, with Marii's bafflement at being stuck in trendy town. I totally get what she's going for. (And how her remark about how "Miyazaki is the best!" prompted a tangent about that Miyazaki.) The random segment of tongue twisters was also great. So often do people talk about buses blowing up, but rarely do they show it.

Which brings us to the first segment, which was all over the place. I was expecting the "Are friends or rakugo more important?" train of thought to hold for longer than it did... but this is Joshiraku, of course it won't. It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas. With spontaneous musical numbers - my favorite kind of musical numbers. Angel!Kukuru was super cute, and Devil!Marii was actually a little creepy. I can't tell if Marii is the sanest of the five or the most insane at this point; they're all pretty crazy. (Kigu's character song with the limited editions better be death medal. Figures that Marii [in character] can't sing at all.) This show's strange obsession with nipples continues, but I don't have a problem with it. Every show needs a motif.

The admiration I have for this show's dedication to wordplay cann't be emphasized enough.

Okay just finished episode five and I loved it to absolutely no end. The 5 wacky girls doing what they do best, as always, making a conversation lose its focus and point to something over the top and creative. My love for this show just keeps increasing each episode, it's just so funny, creative and awesome.

My favourite bit will probably be between the Kukuru's need for "comfort" or the Superhero Skin Sentei Hero part. Mari being tone deaf that's a surprise considering that her seiyuu can actually sing, quite well at that, but a flair for the dramatic definitely makes the entirety of this show. It seems she always as an edge for getting "stripped" all the time, not that I don't mind that. The two segments were both equally amazing to choose, but Kukuru being "happy go lucky" is definitely amusing to watch considering that dark depressive aura she generally gives off most of the time. Mari snapping at the realization of her own tone deafness = priceless.

The Harujuku segment so few Hayao Miyazaki references, nothing much going on but the forceful crepe shoving down Mari's throat was amusing to watch.

Overall awesome episode, and can't wait for the next one.

I definitely like Kigu the best just because she listens to heavy metal. I have to say all of them are adorable. I've got to say that almost every time Marii is like a butt of a joke, I feel rather sorry for her. She sometimes probably go overboard with her opinions and is quite impulsive but I gotta say her antic's rather funny.

Episode 6 was pretty crazy.
First segment was amusing, if only because Ganyou felt being left out.

The 3rd segment with the election, and last entire space election conclusion again left me speechless at the sheer wackiness of it all.

Marii also once again is the highlight of jokes.
Good joke was also when Teteora went missing, which immediately sent the black haired one into a panic due to Tetora's luck.

Really awesome 6th episode. Poor Gankyou feeling left out, but the 4 people clause does seem logical if you take it into the valid points that were made that segment.

Never knew that Gankyou was a sadist. She can be violent but never pictured her for a sadist, you really do learn something new about a character everyday.:eyespin: Tetora's luck definitely coming into play again during the whole segment.

Anyway great episode and like always this show is just too awesome.

Kumeta loves his numerical humor, doesn't he? Surprisingly, the first segment actually held onto some sort of continuity from the previous episode, but it was only temporary. Gankyou's as necessary to the cast as everyone else. If she wasn't there, who would punch people? Doesn't mean she can't have a little fun with them because once again, she dominated this episode. Not even Dark Kigu has that kind of sheer presence. The pot shots at K-ON! (such as X-TORT!) and Tetora's wish to get into Kirara made me realize why I like this show a little more than Jinrui at the moment. Both have their share of cynicism and commentary, but Kumeta is, ultimately, a little more warm-hearted. As warm-hearted as a man who wrote Zetsubou Sensei can get, but still.

Seeing the tables turned and Gan as lower than the other four was highly amusing. Kigu should play boss more often. It's a role that fits her. Anime usually has people in positions of authority also being cute, so she's a natural fit for the role. That closing gag with everyone in S&M positions brought back memories. At this rate, Gan just may outstrip Chiri as "most insane Kumeta character" (though that's a very very very very close race.)

With KoiChoco currently airing (and having had two episodes at once this past week), not to mention the upcoming US election, the closing segment was especially fun to watch. I don't think I've seen Gokujou Seitokai referenced in another anime before, so kudos to that. Who did the prime minister of space (that sounds like a rejected Katamari Damacy character) sell the Earth to, anyway? Slartibartfast? So glad to be mostly caught up with this show.

Gankyou and Mari are the oldest, we can see it because they use the haoris, showing that they are already on an upper rank.
Tetora surely is older than Kukuru.

Rank-Wise, Ganjyou and Mari are a rank higher than the rest in Rakugo. But age doesn't have anything to do with rank.

Age-wise, Kukuru is clearly the youngest since it seems she's not old enough to drink alcohol
Also makes sense the way everyone treats her as the 'cute little kid' since she's so much younger than everyone else.

I read about Rakugo and age does matter when it comes to ranking because the person has to spend time(some years) doing chores , training and performing before moving up a rank. Actually, age is pretty much a consequence of this time spent on training and development.
What matters the most is, obviously, the person's performance. We can guess that Gankyo ,Mari and Tetora are all the same age but Tetora is not as good as the other two on stage and that's why she still isn't a Futatsume.

Here's a piece of text about this:
"After three to five years, assuming that satisfactory progress has
been made, the zenza is promoted to futatsume, whereupon he may
wear the haori, no longer has to perform chores, and must now earn
his own living by his art, no longer receiving an allowance from the
kyokai."

I admit that I overlooked the flashback on episode three, so I thank you for this piece of info. At last, their age relationship must be like this, then:

Gankyou=Mari=Tetora>Kukuru>Kigu.

I may be wrong since it's just a guess, but judging by the info the anime gives us, it must be close to the right answer.

Yes, the only reason age would be a factor just because the 'time' spent on the stuff. Its still true that age directly doesn't decide rank.

If a 40-year old suddenly newbie suddenly joined at the same time as a 25-year old, she wouldn't end up being ranked above the other just because she's older.

I just felt the way you worded it before was as if you were deciding rank purely on how old everyone was, which I felt was in error since there's a lot of factors involved in age that doesn't relate to rank at all. It would only become true if this specific 5 girls all started Rakugo there at the same exact age only in different years.

We can guess that Gankyo ,Mari and Tetora are all the same age but Tetora is not as good as the other two on stage and that's why she still isn't a Futatsume.

heh, personally so far, from the little clips of each girl performing, Tetoras been the one I enjoy listening to the most. With Kigu being my least favorite.

Age-wise, Kukuru is clearly the youngest since it seems she's not old enough to drink alcohol
Also makes sense the way everyone treats her as the 'cute little kid' since she's so much younger than everyone else.

You're confusing Kigurumi with Kukuru.

It's been a while, but I welcome the return of Dark Kigu. Usually the second sketch of any episode is the weakest, but I found this episode's to be stronger than usual. Or maybe that has to do with Marii wearing a hat and overalls that accentuate her ass. I can honestly say I like that look on her. The discussion of what kanji to use to represent someone was a lot of fun to watch. If what Kukuru said about her backstory is true, then... she's a perfectly normal Kumeta character.

How the first segment went from the pentathalon to Marii being a shut in made perfect sense, even if the beginning and end points are almost entirely unrelated. All the things they said about delinquents were spot on, including the kanji. Most of my knowledge on this comes from Axanael and the character of Sakura, but that's the power of media. Information absorbed in one medium can prove useful in another.

The third segment was a great exercise in subtle humor. It's like the Japanese version of living on an ancient Indian burial ground. The bright, ordinary dressing room is creepy as hell. The final twist of Kigu being a robot - explaining her sudden motherly demeanor with the apron - was funny (Kigu Beam!). For ~24 minutes, it felt like it was over in no time at all.

Awesome 7th episode of Joshiraku.

The first segment was amusing with the deliquent bit and Mari becoming the leader of the troupe. Which feels weird considering that Gankyou seems more fit for the role due to her being more stronger than Mari, and each episode has proven that point. The comic panel added to the "feel" of the scene was amusing and really creative. When they were taking about the Legends of whatever, I thought that a Legend of Zelda joke would've been added to the mix, just for sheer kicks and giggles.

The second was weak but the conversations were fun to listen too. Kukuru not minding a life of darkness, and the "butt" reference to Mari was interesting and uniquely funny. It was definitely nice to see dark Kigu again, she needs to appear more often.

The third and final bit was interesting considering that Kukuru was noticing a few things "off" with the space they work in and the others not noticing or just pretending not to notice what they saw to keep the original task at hand ie. Finding the source of what's using up the electricity etc. The walls with the eerie faces and talismans, the sweaty sumo wrestler in the floor, and some creepy looking rats, I wonder what happened in that one room considering that weird high jinx happen in there most of the time. Gankyou having the DBZ sensors in her glasses, nice surprise and gag regarding the glasses thing that keeps getting referenced, and the ending was a unique surprise with the robot Kigu being the source of the over usage of the electricity.

The best segment was the first one because of the uniqueness of the conversational flow and the delinquent play bit made it even more amusing.

Overall amazing episode and I can't wait for the next one which ironically enough is released but not subbed yet. Why must this show get the least love and attention, it's just too awesome to pass by.

Episode 7 was great start to finish.

One thing I've noticed with Joshiraku is that it has been very sparing with the physical comedy, but when it comes, they nail it. Great comic timing. A few weeks ago there was a scene when four of the girls were slammed into the wall, and the fifth went straight through the shōji. This week it was Kukuru's phenomenal table faceplant that cracked me up.

Is it bad that I kind of want the ceiling to randomly cave in two or three episodes from now as a nod to the third part?

Ep 09 is probably the trippiest ever especially the third segment. It doesn't mean not losing steam one bit. I still appreciate the wordplay and talking about relevant issues. I don't know why but I just like Kigu as she slowly reveals her dark personality. Actually there are no characters I hate. They are all pretty much different and likeable.

Can't help but feeling sorry for Marie as she is constantly made of a fool and being left out but she is probably the main one that makes the show more enjoyable.

Joshiraku ep9[/SPOILER]

This episode was a lot easier to figure out than the others, even with my very bad Japanese. I still didn't understand a lot of things: for example, I didn't get why they were talking about children in the first sketch (and thus didn't get the punch line either). The other two were very visual, so I understood the gist of it.

I didn't get any of the cultural references, though.

Thanks again for your help with watching this brilliant show. :D
