I've heard they don't have much in the budget for advertising so they are probably leaning on word of mouth more than most companies.

Yes but I find it weird that they are giving out codes that let people join on headstart. Headstart was supposed to be Pre-order exclusive but even now we may see '' free loaders '' in there, as in people who were never going to even buy the game. Most people who are interested in TERA would have preordered it by now anyway so what's the point of these codes?

Yes, please move the subscription vs. free-to-play with microtransactions argument to that other thread so we can talk about fireball-shooting lolis and sword-wielding ladies in scantily clad outfits.

When the game starts back up on Saturday (for those of us who preordered, anyway) the other seven character slots will be opened... it will be time to create alts. :D Oh, and then I'll have to write character bios and backstories for each of them... :uhoh:

Hahaha, getting into it I see? Wonder if any of those character's will be straight. :heh:

I got my backgrounds already set. My lancer is the only one I'll really go all out on tho.

I got some codes on my email for the NA headstart, in case someone haven't preordered yet. (I doubt.. but might as well share them here). You get to start at the same time as head start people, and characters carry over to launch if you buy the game.

I find it kinda weird that they distributed 3 codes per user, and most of us probably got these codes too .. This means that people who did not preorder will still be with us at head start, and they may not even buy the game .. free loaders :x (Still, use them if you want..)

I did not receive such codes, so I suppose they're not sending them to everyone.

Wtf are you talking about? How would being hacked be related to the email in any way possible? Even if we assumed that I was hacked, why would I receive such email? The codes were in my email, to be inserted to TERA site .. .. -_-

Also as previously, the codes are sent to TERA '' veterans ''. Meaning if you just joined last beta, you probably won't get them. I preordered weeks ago and have played in many betas.. I spoke of '' most of us '' because that's how it is, most of the players who have pre-ordered TERA will definitely have been playing longer than just one beta.

That was hardly hostile, sorry if it seemed that way. However, I can still not comprehend your deduction of hackers from an email that gives out codes for other users.

If the email required you to log in to somewhere to redeem the codes, that would be a different story but these were distributed in the email.

Also TERA hasn't even launched yet .. The possibility of phishing emails for TERA at this point is nonexistent.

The way I see it, its for people who have a bunch of friends who haven't heard of the game, or aren't all that interested. Its an opportunity to get players to try out the game with the added incentive that unlike betas, you keep the character(s) if you end up paying for the game.

For example, you show your three friends who are on the fence, or weren't interested/ haven't heard of the game yet. Let's say they all decide to try and you party up with them, By the end of the head start period, perhaps you are all level 20. (Maybe they are slow levelers like me :heh: ) Now they might enjoy the game, but also with an incentive to keep playing with you as you will be continuing after launch. Unlike the betas, where you can simply toss away the character since it will be wiped, there is more connection when it is a character that won't be wiped if the purchase/subscription is made.

Hopefully I explained my point clearly ._<

Yes but I still don't understand their choice to allow them into head start that was supposed to be pre order exclusive. Don't advertise it as pre-order only if that's not what it is :/... They could've given out codes to give to people to let them try TERA as a sort of trial, for example, after head start ..

Don't be too sure about that. I already have a dozen or so GW2 phising mails resting in my spam folder.

Like Kyero said, it never hurts to be careful. Most of these kinds of mails have an enticing message, and then a link to click. Since yours only gave game codes and no links, it's probably safe.

Its a chance to start together, maybe. Any later and perhaps other games (Diablo III, Guild Wars 2) will hook those kinds of people who aren't really playing anything at the moment.

Just conjecture here :P

I don't really see the big deal since everyone who buys the game basically got the OBT period to get their characters leveled ahead of the people who buy at launch. So preorders and any friends they refer get to start Saturday instead of Tuesday... friend referrals are a pretty common way of word-of-mouth advertisement.

Hell, Gmail used to operate that way for ages, and Google+ did the same thing when it was in beta. Get invite codes, send to friends, bring people into the fold. It's an effective method of advertisement.

Westlo

^I doubt. MMO's aren't -that- popular when compared to the single player games in the Games section. If you look at the amount of replies TERA has gotten in such short time however, it's clear that TERA is more popular than GW2 or Aion in Animesuki.

I don't know about GW2, I feel that since the game is in such a close BETA field right now. Not much can be said, except spoiling by videos from commentators. While Aion has had a long run.

Or that TERA has had an open beta and is closer to launch (In Aion's case... well, Aion's always been a bit of a misfire even in the general MMO community).

It helps to have been actually able to play the game if you want to talk about it.

Monthly Subscription: $14.99
3-month Subscription: $35.85 ($11.95/month = 20% discount)
6-month Subscription: $59.70 ($9.95/month = 34% discount)
Yearly Subscription: $107.40 ($8.95/month = 40% discount)

Beginning June 1, 2012, at 12:00 AM PST, the pricing will change to the normal rate:

Monthly Subscription: $14.99

6-month Subscription: $65.70 ($10.95/month = 27% discount)
Yearly Subscription: $119.40 ($9.95/month = 34% discount)

Still good prices when comparing to WoW subscription fees. I'll give this game a shot when I get more free time and money.

Somewhere in Spring 2012. The subscription fees and their discount dates can also give a hint. There's still no definite date though.

.. What on earth are you talking about? Are we talking about the same game? Did you just hop in the discussion and have no idea what you are talking about? TERA head-start starts tomorrow exactly at noon. The exact time is 20 hours and 37 minutes from writing this post.

And the game launches on May 1st ...

What do you mean there's no definite date? The definite date has been out for weeks, if not for months.. The CBT's have been out for last 2-3 months with one beta every two weeks. The OBT was last weekend, and finally this weekend, the game has head-start for preorder players and after that the game goes into retail launch.

To be honest 4 and 6 in term of graphic settings didn't feel much different to me. At least at first glance, I'm not too sure what the game is the most heavy demanding on though... (automatic settings propose me 5)

I'm running a 4 year old computer and I can play this game at Max settings. It's actually very well optimized. It runs far better than Aion or GW2 (although this one still in beta).

Edit: Okay, servers seem to be really buggy right now. Instance matching just isn't working, and the one time we got into a group the game didn't put us into the dungeon and we had incomplete members, so we decided to reform and research but now the game thinks we're 'drop outs' and can't use instance matching anymore.

I have sadly, Maybe its the AMD Radeon card... SOMETHING... the PC gets loud all of a sudden and it stutters. Memory Leak perhaps? It wouldn't be memory probably; sounds like a CPU/GPU spike that is perhaps causing one of the two to overheat. Then the fans would go to the fastest speed possible and the framerate would grind to a halt while the CPU/GPU tries to cool itself down. I would make sure you don't have any parts overclocked, and that your computer has sufficient cooling/ventilation inside the case. There should also be apps to monitor your CPU/GPU temperature.

(Sometimes this can also have to do with bugs in drivers/firmware, so make sure you have the latest for both your motherboard and your GPU.)

modding will get you banned.

No it doesn't. Get your facts straight man. It has even been said by a GM in the forums that you can mod at your own discretion, but don't speak about it.

AND, even if we assumed that you're not allowed to mod .. How's EME gonna know? The Launcher only checks if files are there, it doesn't check what the files contain. It's impossible to get caught for using mods. Using mods was not allowed in Dragon Nest too but it was impossible to get caught ..

The question is, what are you going to mod? Changing the horrid english dub to Japanese, and de-censoring Elins.. those are the mods I use..

On unrelated note, finally reached 38 and can go to sleep .. it took 14 hours >.<

Kyero Fox

It's not okay if you compare it to Japanese one. The game has an JRPG'-ish feel to it (Yes, I know it was made in Korea), so having japanese npc chat, attacks, and cutscenes in japanese feel more natural.

Just wait till you get later.. the cutscenes are HORRID in english.

And just so you know, Elins arent the only class who were censored... so .. yeah.

And what do you mean still? 32 was the cap at OBT, 38 in head-start, and 60 on Launch.

There's no overplayed class. The only overplayed thing is an Elin (race). If you want to always get a party, instant party in Instance Matching etc .. Make a lancer. But, lancers are boring in my opinion. Although you protect your party.. That's about it. Your damage sucks.

Kyero got trolled bad, modding games never get you banned as long as you don't mod them so you can do stuffs you shouldn't be able to. That'd just be plain stupid. Many people modded the game on both version and no-one got banned. Guess why? They weren't hacking or anything. That's what the GMs care the most about.

RP servers are going to be different from the usual PvE. There's a very high number of castanic and human females, a large number of amani males, an equally large number of high elf males (I'm sure you can guess why). Elin aren't as numerous as castanics or humans of either sex.

Popori and baraka are predictably the least common races.

Warriors may have it easy but when it comes to soloing bosses as a sorc... it's fun at first, but you can only slip up once or twice before you die.

I had a quest to kill two ovoliths... big egg-spider things outside the Sinestral Manor. I broke 7 crystals trying to kill one... and eventually did kill one... but needed two to complete the quest. And they don't drop anything worth writing home about. The novelty of soloing gigantic monsters soon wears off when you realize that you die a shitload, waste a shitload of money in broken crystals and don't get anything in return.

Back when I soloed my first boss monster--an indolent kumas in Celestial Hills--I thought it was awesome. Yeah, I died 5 times before I figured out how to kill it, and it took close to ten mintues and left me sweaty-palmed and excited. But after the initial novelty wears off... they just aren't worth the trouble of soloing them when it's much easier to just grab two or three guildmates and burn them down in thirty seconds or so.

The problem is the game is too easy when you have a healer + tank or just a healer. It makes all the content pretty mindless. Yesterday we ran SM with just 4 people and a mystic as healer, then played through the desert area including the underground mines (killing spider BAMs) with the same mystic and finally duoing the desert basilisks/giant face huggers with no healer.

Died quite a few times doing the basilisks but it was pretty much the only time I really enjoyed the game. None BAMs are just too easy, and even BAMs with any kind of healer can get stupid too. So you're left with solo/duoing BAMs with no healers, but while it's fun and challenging, the death penalty is kind of harsh (regarding crystals).

What they really need is to make the game's difficulty somewhere in between the two extremes they have right now. Granted, the higher level stuff might be different, but I feel like they should start increasing the difficulty earlier on otherwise when the really difficult stuff becomes mandatory, people are going to be hit by a brick wall if all they stuff they're used to doing has been fairly easy.

Queuing up for the dungeon finder as a Lancer is hilarious. Instant match.

Then you get into the dungeon, and pull your hair out as all the DPS insist on tanking, and all the healer(s) heal you whenever you reach 95% hit points, drawing all the aggro >:[

On the bright side, I got the blue lance for my Lancer on the first run of Bastion of Lok, and the greaves too : o

And it doesn't seem like guilds apply across characters...

So, I've looked extensively into this game... And I must say I'm particularly interested. If it weren't for one thing, I'd have bought it awhile ago.

Which brings up the question; is this game truly worth a 15$ monthly subscription fee? I'm going to college soon, so money won't be exactly easy to come by (though I will certainly be able to afford it, it just means less money for food xD). Am I going to enjoy this enough to warrant the periodic fee?

Isn't it like that for all games? I've never played a MMO with a guild that is tied into your account o_o.

You're still welcome to join us on your new character too, though, if you still need a guild. I joined with all my alts as well. For me it's just confusing to be in different guilds with all my characters.

^Asuras .. Doesn't that depend on the person? I personally feel that this is worth of $15 .. I can afford that much even if I'm a student as well with not much money .. Also if you play alot instances and make gold by selling loot, you can buy your subscription from other players with gold. Though you can expect HIGH prices in the chronoscrolls (gametime) at the beginning of the game.

Seems pretty normal for most MMOs lately. Put in so many quests that people can avoid doing some and still overlevel the zone. Of course this doesn't work if all the quests flow in a series together, requiring you to complete all the previous ones to progress.

By reading this topic it should be clear ; This game is the best MMO of all times. It's incredibly fun, due it's combat.. So even when it lacks in quest department, I don't really care either way. '' Once you go TERA, you never go back (nyerk). '' .. In other words, after you've played a MMO with a combat system like this, there's no going back to tab-targeting games. I say buy it, and give it a shot. And if you're worried about end-game stuff .. don't be. There's loads of stuff to do even at max level, so your money won't go to nothing while waiting for quests. One example is the Nexus, sort of instanced area with random quests generated when you enter, and the place has BAM's that require over 20 people to kill. (Or so the article said.. we'll see when we get there :D). Then there's of course grinding hard mode instances and all that, and then making more characters :P.

That's because they made the game much easier than what it actually should had been. You level much faster on the Western TERA compared to others versions which in turn make it impossible to finish some achievements related to repeatable quests :(

Repetitive grinding isn't fun. I'm pretty happy with the speed of leveling. It's fast, but not too fast, and the number of quests isn't absurd like SWTOR.

I'm up to level 32 and I had plenty of opportunity to do repeatable quests in Sinestral Manor to get my level 32 progress token armor--I didn't bother with the weapon since I picked up the Fanggyre in SM.

@Xion Valkyrie: I managed to enchant my disc to +5. I can't seem to get it to +6. I used a white to get it to +1, greens to get it from +1 to +3 and a blue to get it to +4. Then it ate six blues and more greens than I can count trying to get +5.

Then I accidentally put a white in the slot when trying today and it finally leveled up to +5. I'm probably not going to bother getting it to +6. I'll replace the damn thing when I start running Cultist's Refuge in three or so levels, anyway...

Speaking of amusing screenshots, this is the all-elin girl-group dancing troupe I ran into near the flight point in Velika today, and was compelled to join in. :D

Anyways, I don't think I'll be getting the game. I played about 20 hours of the game this weekend and I really only liked it when I was fighting BAMs either by myself or with a friend.

If I could change a few things in TERA I'd do the following:
-Remove all aggro abilities. No tank and spank period. Mobs change aggro based on vicinity, remaining HP, debuffs. Ie, if a player is debuffed and is close to death, mobs will target him first.
-Replace all normal mobs with mini-BAMS. They'd be about half the size of normal BAMs, but probably only 10-15% of the HP. They'd also hit for a lot less than BAMs. However, you'd be fighting multiples of these at the same time.

Thanks for the buddy key though, and I hope everyone who bought the game will continue to have fun with it.

You need to use greens till +4 or +5 if lucky, then blues. It's still a gamble so it could succeed without any fails or fail 20 times in row. But I can tell you this ; It definitely isn't going to +6 with a white or green item. I've used even yellow items from +5 to +6 yet they've still occasionally failed.

Soo.. when are the servers gonna be up? Yes, I know, 7AM PST; but I can't convert that into my time zone <.<

If you're running windows 7 Dist (or previous version) you can add an extra clock in the task bar. I use it a fair bit to work out server maintenance times and so on.

Right click the clock, select Adjust Date/Time. Click Additional Clocks tab (Windows 7), check show this clock. From the drop menu select (UTC -8:00) Pacific Time (US & Canada), enter a display name (ie. PST or Server Time). Hit Apply and OK. Now when you mouse over the time in the task bar you can see the server time that most NA games use.

Windows 7 can have two additional clocks, I'm unsure on the other versions of Windows.

I don't think there's AS guild. And Animesukians are scattered in different servers too. Syn and I think Kyero play on Celestial Hills. Me, Mow.Wow and Clogs play on Dragonfall .. Not sure about any others in this topic. Actually AS guild would be sort of stupid with only few members, as it would never grow if no more AS people would get interested in the game. Also remember that both servers, CH and Dragonfall are PVE. If you're on Valley of Titans, the one with 2 hour queues to get in, then you'd have to give up on PVP if you transferred your character to a new server.

Frogster fails so bad that they feel the need to bribe their customers. Did you read about their latest endeavors? People who pre-ordered the game but canceled few days before launch, was never replied to their support tickets. They finally received a reply, once headstart started, stating that since the game has gone into launch they can not give a refund and refuse to discuss the matter further :twitch:

... If you've sent a support ticket stating that you want your money back, it shouldn't matter at all when the support has time to reply to it because the fact remains that it was sent before launch ..

Pre-ordering was a pain in the ass anyway. At least from Asia. :heh:

I had paid for a month of a VPN service only to go to TERA's website and find their store down for maintenance. Then the maintenance got extended... and again... and again. The store didn't even come up when the servers did and once it did it told me to use Amazon, D2D (GameFly), Impulse (GameStop), or Origin. Tried Impulse, they didn't have the CE. Already had Origin on my computer for ME2, tried that. Didn't work. Told me to log onto the website. That didn't work, kept getting the British site using an American VPN server. Then went to Amazon as I never used D2D before. After ordering, they were processing it for a couple hours only to tell me that I'd hijacked my own account and I had to change my password. Did that and ordered again. After a couple hours it worked!

And TERA's own store was back online by that time (though I think they stopped offering the pre-order bonuses)...

You can transfer your character from the website though, when you log in to your account. So if you wanna come to Dragon, just use that feature. CH is RP server so remember that, you may like Dragon more if you're not into RP'ing.

The game allows free character transfers? Or will you have to pay (WoW vibes hitting me)? I want to join Mow Yun, and Dist's guild on their server. Then the other members on another server sort of splits it :eyespin: I'm also liking the looks of the Dragon Skin weapons. Also it seems like Celestial Hills is the only "noted" roleplaying server? That's quite a strange start.

Edit: Oh, I was trying to log into my account and noticed they made a news post about it :heh:

Server transfer is free if you transfer from more populated one to less populated one, but if you transfer to more populated one, they will charge you. Haven't read about it more than that so I dunno.

Either way Hooves, you can only pick one server. RP, or PVE? Well, both are PVE but I'm not really into roleplaying and a RP server sort of *expects* you to roleplay to certain extend .. too much trouble.

Well, I play on Celestial Hills and I haven't actually extensively roleplayed once yet. A number of people are too busy leveling, getting guilds together, getting crafting going... there's no lack of PvE here.

My guild is not strictly RP either. Gchat is OOC, party chat is OOC, only /say we're strongly encouraged to stay in-character. We chat about various things in gchat and coordinate things like instance runs and other PvE content as well as solidifying guild crafting and AH strategies (since we're a political and economic guild).

It's a good bunch of folks I'm running with and they're all quite likeable and fun to play with. :) I'm not feeling any sort of "pressure" to stay IC all the time on the RP server, and of course there's some people who just ignore the fact that it's an RP server. However, I'd say most of the people I've run into try to keep in-character when they're talking in /say and there's been a bit of small RP going on here and there. Lots of stuff going on at the tavern in Velika.

Role playing an elin would be...interesting... to say the least.

I roleplay an elin... :heh:

I never played the beta or any of the previous previews, and just getting started, but so far it seems pretty decent (and of course very pretty). I like how the combat involves some strategy in terms of positioning and there seem to be a lot of different systems to get into at higher levels. I'm actually sort of curious to try playing with a controller at some point just to see what it's like, at least for soloing.

Spent most of this evening attempting to kill a bam 2 levels higher than me. It was made all the more frustrating because I did have it close to dead, then my keyboard randomly stopped responding. He smashed me good.

After about two dozen deaths I figured 6% is close enough for principle's sake. I'll kill underleveled bams to get titan runes... maybe then I won't get knocked down every time the damn monster sneezes.

Drops seem to really lower after about a 5 level difference, so try to kill BAMs not more than 5 levels under you if you want good drops.

Dist

^Not true. I've soloed SB at level 32, got 5+ blues per run. I've soloed SM at 40-ish, got 5+ blues per run. The golds really start to drop only at CR and NT so I dont know about those yet as I have not tried to solo them.

Regardless, soloing a bam at 5 levels over doesn't do anything. You can even use instance queue after 7 levels above it's original level so it would be weird if the drops were significantly lower.

Also I've killed the level 20 basilisks around 38 and they still dropped lots of crap so even if the drop thing was true, it wouldn't matter for materials because those DO drop.

And yeah.. the game looks absolutely stunning. I've seen few people who said GW2 is better and LOOKS better and I just .. am left speechless. Though I've not played GW2, I've watched couple videos of it and it does NOT look better o.O. In fact, it looks like an f2p game. Well it sorta is, too ..

I figure go after ones about two levels below me. That way my spells will do more damage and I won't get knocked down hardly at all unless they hit me with their super move--which will probably just kill me outright, lol.

Edit: For instance drops I've established the rule. The game looks at the highest level party member and sets the loot tables accordingly. For instance, Sinestral Manor is a level 26 instance. If you run it at 26, everybody at 26, with level 26 greens and 22 blues equipped, you'll see each boss drop 2-3 blues and the final boss drop 2-3 blues and 2 golds. You'll also see higher incidences of random blues dropping from trash mobs and more runes. I ran SM from 26 until 31 without seeing any difference in drops. In that five level domain, each boss dropped 2-3 blues and the final boss dropped the blues plus the golds.

However, I ran SM another time after I hit 32 to finish up some quests that were half-completed. There was a marked difference in the drops. The bosses that previously were dropping 2-3 blues were now dropping one blue or none at all, and the final boss only dropped 2 golds and 1 blue.

This seems pretty consistent across all of my attempts at various instances as well, so as long as you're within five levels of the level listed in the instance matching queue, you should not affect the loot tables. But once you are +6 above the instance, the drops start to "drop" off pretty significantly. Granted you still have a chance to get them, but the chances get real low and the chance of getting nothing from a miniboss becomes much more likely.

I was soloing the level 30/31 basilisks at 34 and I was getting decent loot (5-6 drops ber kill) but as soon as I dinged 35 they gave 2-3 drops per kill and I decided it was a waste of time to continue killing them anymore. Instances might be different though.

If you like soloing BAMs and like action games, I'd suggest rolling a warrior. Up to the 32 ish BAMs the only one that seems more effort than it's worth are the crab BAMs, mostly because of the terrain and the proximity of other crab BAMs in that area.

I believe pretty much all open world BAMs are solo-able by Warrior even later on so it's probably the most flexible BAM soloing class. It's also probably the fastest.

I was soloing those on my 39 sorc last night while waiting for CR queue and farming potion mats. Ended up with three CR runs, a gold and a few blues to sell, enough mats to make 100 potions and several dead ancient teraliths, which each dropped blues, greens and titan runes. :D

I didn't intend to fight them at first but one of them spawned directly on top of a gathering node. :twitch: The nerve. I just had to kill him, and when I realized I could take them on fairly easily in about 8ish minutes, I killed one waiting for respawning nodes.

I can't heal at all so my stock of potions keeps me alive when fighting bams if I mess up kiting and get hit. The teraliths are pretty fast but by virtue of being 3 levels above them I don't get knocked down very often and their attack patterns are fairly predictable.

Runes are easier to get from lower level bams... it seems that runes are the last thing that falls off the loot table when you're overleveled. Since my guild is a crafting guild I routinely stock the gbank with titan runes.

2012-05-03, 23:46

Lancers take FOREVER to kill anything D:

^I think it's sort of weird how you can add people on your friend list without them confirming the request :x. Well, you can always delete them. Anyway, catch me up already on levels so I can abuse you for instance matching too ;D

What do you mean with Aman/Castanic with female voices? Pretty sure each race has a distinguishing voice from each another, even within the 4-5 options you have to choose from. I'm using the JP voice pack though so that may be why..

On lancer related news, we had some fun couple days ago in Westonia. Saw a world boss, a blue Dragon. It was crazy.. It was two levels above us and when it flew up and smashed against our lancer, he lost 70% of his hp while blocking D:. Was a damn intense fight, even for a Sorcerer.. One hit would've surely killed me even through my Mana Barrier. It didn't help that a nearby BAM (Naga) joined the fight when the Dragon had about 20% of it's HP left. Sadly, no worthy loot dropped.

I love fighting the world bosses. They usually have high drop rates for good loot in them, and the fights are more intense than regular BAMs. Sadly, many don't think the same way I do, as people don't often want to kill them '' just for fun '' :(. In other words, if something is not part of a quest, you usually can't get party for it because there's no EXP to be gained except from the monster itself. And there's no way I can solo them .. Well even if I could, it would take AGES and it wouldn't be fun .. So it's sad to just see them out there yet leave them alone :(

Of course, running instances is fun too since there's bosses there (Though I can NEVER win a roll for an item I need :(), but queueing is HELL as a sorcerer. It could take from 30 minutes to several hours.

Mow Yun
2012-05-04, 02:13

And when I mean Aman/Castanic with Elin voice, I mean female Aman/Castanics with the voice set typically used by Elins. So they have this really high pitched loli voice >_>;

Also tanking CR like a champ failure. Though I'm always about a second late on the leash for the optional boss, he never wants to venture to the wall where i can tank him easily. If I move away from the center, he uses that rush at me and then rushes back.

Or the DPS kite him away while I'm low on shield counter mana -_-;

At least this game is fun. Even with my lag I'm doing okay. Only died during the prologue. I've cleared the starting island and am level 12, no deaths, on my Elin Archer. Did everything solo. This early leveling is SO much better than WoW/Aion/Rift.

If you are worried about leveling being too slow, quests provide tons of exp, so look around to see if any NPC needs your help. That should get you through most areas pretty easily. Starting at around level 20, you can start doing instances and fighting BAMs to get substantial amounts of experience per run/kill. It's mighty slow and frankly not worth it for some classes (don't solo BAMs as Lancer, you will take an eon to kill it if you are around the same level), but its another path if you hate questing.

As for which server, Dist, Hooves, and I are on the Dragonfall server if you are into PvE. As for PvP, I have no idea. They seem to be hugely popular and I've heard that there are massive queues to get into the PvP servers quite often.

You didn't get them or you didn't just know where to look? Go to Item Claim and they will be there, if you actually bought the game before it went to launch.

Also no, it's not gonna work. When you turn off the VPN, it changes to your local connection. It's never instant like it's when a packet or two is lost due dodgy connection, and you will definitely dc. So if you turn off the VPN while playing, with 99% chance it will disconnect you from game.

For some reason the lancer ended up bailing after the second boss and we decided to finish the rest of the instance with four and the dps-glyphed warrior tanking. Actually, it meant that I was tanking for most of the fights, or rather kiting and nuking on the run and when the warrior's high-aggro move came up dropping an overchanneled fireblast. None of the other bosses proved to be a challenge, which is funny as I've seen full groups wipe on the big blue robot Bonus Boss with a lancer tank. :twitch:

All I know is that the mass BAM killing event that En Masse had during closed beta (which was actually a server stress test) failed HARD. Nobody I knew could handle it smoothly on ANY setting, even people with monster machines. Maybe it's a case by case basis right now, but if I was playing on a super populated server like Valley of Titans or something, I (and many others) would probably barely be able to move.

I can play this game on max settings no problem, but the random server lag makes things choppy to the point that I have to go from 6 to either 4, 2, or 0 (that or turn off ALL names/titles/guild names on players, which helps a lot).

Mow Yun

The beta BAM killing event brought my machine to the ground, so to speak. And I run the game at max setttings with 40-50 FPS right now. At least a hundred players spamming spells, etc. Was quite ridiculous. I turned the settings all the way down and viewed ran the game as if it were a slide show.

I've never had to turn anything down for any reason and it doesn't get choppy. The issues people are describing where local graphics performance degrades unacceptably would not actually be server issues, because the actions/animations are rendered on your local machines without bearing on the connection to the server. If the connection to the server was the problem, you'd instead see lots of disconnections. The issue being described sounds more that there's way too much going on such that it stressed your CPU and GPU. It's trying to render too many characters taking too many actions with too many effects. It's probable that either your CPU or GPU are actually overheating, which causes the performance to tumble. What they need to do to fix that would be to make a change in the client to degrade gracefully and limit the field of vision significantly when that occurs to preserve a playable experience.

If you suffer from huge drops in framerate even today, I might recommend that you load a tool to monitor your CPU and GPU temperatures. Also, if you've overclocked your CPU or GPU, you might scale that back to defaults if your cooling can't handle it. On a laptop, make sure the ventilation is good and the air ducts are clean (same on a desktop, I suppose). Anyway, there are still things they can do to improve things, but the sort of local performance is really more about the machine than about the servers.

One more thing you might try, if you haven't already, is to lower your in-game graphics resolution to 720p if it isn't already there. Of course that might be a bit lower-res than what you use currently, but it should help lower the complexity of what it's trying to do a bit. Even on my 2-year-old laptop, that's what I do to help keep the stability up. My desktop is newer, though, and doesn't seem to have much trouble.

About the view distance for player/npc models.... It's annoyingly low in TERA, and I've heard it can be cranked much higher in the Korean version of the game. Supposedly this is due to server performance concerns. The more models individual players are rendering, the more their client has to keep track of by downloading information from the servers. I hope they let us increase that in a later patch. It's especially a pain on PvP servers because you can't see those mounted rape squads coming until they are almost on you.

Solo'd my first Basilisk today on my 19 Archer. O. M. G. That was so terrifying yet so exciting. The lag playing from Thailand was brutal, could barely avoid and failed to avoid many of those firebombs. And 4 times everything just stopped for a couple seconds only for it to resume with a GIANT BASILISK EATING MY FACE. Used ~15 potions and just kited it around a tree (which I got stuck on too many times :/) slowly chipping it down with my normal Arrow attack for the most part, which did about .1% damage to it. Got some greens and 35K XP (hit level 20 from it) and I guess some gold but I wasn't counting that. Had only 15% stamina left at the end. :D

Only time I've ever had that excitement in WoW was raiding in TBC and Cataclysm for the first times.

To me I mostly tune out the quests and just think of them as XP bonuses while I level. The only ones I pay any real attention to are the storyline quests, even though they aren't terribly interesting either (I was far more interested in SWTOR's storyline quests).

Do tell. I always wondered how that works actually.

Ever played cops and robbers/cowboys and indians with your friends? It's kind of like that. Instead of being "felix playing a level 23 elin" you are that elin. You answer not as you would as a player, but as the character.

Like a play, if you will, only it runs on 90% improvisation. It's easier for some than others, but a rule of thumb is always to try and imagine not what you would say, but what your character would say.

Some call this geeky or even creepy, but roleplaying, at it's core, was never about stats and items. It was about creating a character and then becoming that character. The current MMORPG games were born from the old pen and paper genre after all.

Don't people lean towards creating these ingame (half-)personas anyway?

relentlessflame
2012-05-07, 16:52
Don't people lean towards creating these ingame (half-)personas anyway?I would say generally not. Most players just see the characters as a way to try the various jobs, and their main focus even as they interact with others is to interact with "the person behind the character". Most of the chat is gamers interacting with other gamers (and talking about other games they've played, techniques to play the game better, trolling about the Elin being creepy, etc.). Other than on the role-play server, there's not really much emphasis on acting "in-character", but that's what I've seen on the other MMORPGs I've played as well.

As for the rest of the questions... There is a decent amount of character customization, but particularly around the character's face, with a decent amount of different races and jobs. The rest of the customization is based on the items you equip, though many of those can be dyed in different colours. Haven't played past the beginner section yet, though, so can't comment on team dynamics as you progress through the game.

I'm interesting in "make your character completely unique" kind of customization, not the generic "slider options" :heh:

Most of the chat is gamers interacting with other gamersIt's this identification as "gamers" that I'm alluding to. Yes you're not playing a fantasy but you're still playing as a "gamer", something which is only applicable in "games". Understandably it's not artificial, since it's still you, but at the same time dealing with "virtual problems" is essentially a persona in itself; given how separate games and real life are.

I think you misunderstood the question. I'm interesting in "make your character completely unique" kind of customization, not the generic "slider options" :heh:Well, I don't know what would qualify as "making your character completely unique" in that sense. You are stuck with certain parameters, and can tweak certain parameters, but you'll always be within the confines they give you. It's not like you can upload your own 3D model or create your own art/designs. But by the same token, there are enough parameters that not everyone looks exactly the same either. I guess I would say the degree of customization in the game is "average" in that sense.

Hair options on the Elin are the most limiting. There's plenty of hair and face options for most other races it seems (especially Elves, they have like 5239084510298340129842 hair options), but the Elin have their hair and ears locked together.

Perhaps an example would help. When you write fanfiction, you try to place yourself in the characters you write and write from their point of view, right? The same thing applies to roleplaying. You don't communicate from your point of view, but from your character's point of view.

If you play the game as a "gamer" (terrible term, let's use "action players" instead) you would run around, do quests and the only interaction with the community would be things like "Hey, you want to do a dungeon run?" "WTS Gloves of Intellect" and "So who do you think is going to win the US election?" You interact with other people as yourself, to those people as themselves. Humans.

As a roleplayer, while also doing quests, you would interact with a far different way. You would not go running around talking about the things that happen in the real world, your character does not know about that stuff. It doesn't exist to them. Instead you talk about things that happen in the game world. Events tht are happening, things that guilds are doing, things that you and your friends have thought of. And you would do so as your character, not yourself.

Actually, let's stick to the fanfiction comparison. Roleplaying is essentially a giant joint-fanfic. Most "action players" aren't interested in the fanfic. They just want to use the combat and item mechanics of the game. Roleplayers on the other hand hardly ever stop writing, since every conversation they make is done with the intent of adding to the story.

There's nobody forcing you to do that on Celestial Hills (the only official RP server). There are plenty of people on C Hills who just play PvE style and don't RP at all. I hear OOC conversations in /say all the time, though usually not in the major cities.

I haven't actually spent that much time RPing yet. Most people haven't. Most of the players are trying to get level 60 first. After that I suspect incidences of RP will spike significantly.

(b) what's the ratio of bosses/elites to garbage-questing
(c) does it have team grind? or is it quest grind?
(d) any interesting world events, factions etc?
(e) any character customization? or just armor and other junk

a) First 20 levels can be soloed, though it will be boring. After that, you start to see alot of BAMs. You CAN solo those but a kill would take over 20 minutes and if you die, you get to start all over again. Some classes would never be able to solo a BAM. So for BAMs you go with the usual heal+tank combo.. Don't think they're still a pushover .. Some world bosses will even kill the tank while guarding with one hit if shit happens. And instances definitely are not soloable, until you are over 10 levels past it.

b) Think of quests just a bonus exp and you'll make it through.. There's plenty of BAM quests out there. There is, of course, more normal quests than BAM quests but each area typically has at least two different BAMs, sometimes even 5-6 different types which each always have a quest. There's also a repeatable suppression quest for BAMs if you prefer fighting them over normal trash.

c) What do you mean team/quest grind? This game doesn't even have grind. I've never grinded even once on TERA. Just do the story quest, and side quests that are scattered around the story quest and eventually you will be level 60.

d) Game just launched.. no events yet. There was an event in CBT where they spawned bosses at city gate but there were hundreds of players there and people with even beast gaming rigs lagged to death. If they come up with events, I hope they're something different <<.
TERA has no factions, only open world pvp with All vs. All. That is, if you roll on PvP server. PvP server is also full of gankers waiting at any pvp area to kill lowbies passing by when they have nothing better to do. Unless you're a ganker yourself, don't roll on a PvP server, the PvP is nonexistent. When I played on PvP server on CBT, I didn't have real PvP even once. Only ganking ..

e) There's the character customization at start, of course. This isn't a F2P game like Elsword or Dragon Nest, there's real customization there. Sadly Elins have their ears/tail locked to the hair type they're using.

There are slots for costume items and they can be acquired from reputation that is gained from daily quests that become accessible at level 60. You also get a Halo, Orb of Light and a Flower Band if you level your Mining, Essence Gathering and Plant Gathering to 300.

Even the basic armor in this game looks different. All armors don't just look identical meaning it's as if you never changed your armor .. Also you can use templates to have your armor look different what it normally would. Only downside of this game's customization is that all weapons use the same shape and only their texture slightly changes .. Meaning all weapons look pretty much identical :(

Just started playing Berzerker, holy **** it kills so much faster than Lancer. Thunder Strike is... wow. And then there's Cyclone for clearing out little guys.

Jesus. ._.

Dist - only Sorc discs mostly look the same. Lancer shields actually change shape! And Berserker axes get noticeably more impressive looking, especially on my Aman. :)

Also I personally think it starts getting a little grindy at level 40-ish. Sure, you get more quests with bonus exp, but at this point if you aren't a DPS class you're looking at taking quite a while to kill all the monsters. They start dodging more frequently at this point too, and hit harder. Of course if you party up it goes by really quick, and you get bonus exp for partying too (like a 10% bonus to monster kill exp or something, I dunno)

EDIT: Crafting in this game sucks. The stuff you make sucks for the amount of materials you put in it. Of course, the best weapons are made through crafting but that's at like skill level 400 and the highest "training" level goes only to 250, so you gotta grind out crafts from there, and it takes gazillions of runes to level it.

Alchemy in MMO's has always been a generally safe bet. Pretty much anything that's consumable (alchemy, ammo, enchants) will always have a market. Armor is much harder to move and reaches its saturation point much faster than consumables. Armor usefullness tends to be limited by content updates and raid progressions, while Alchemy will always have use at any level.

^I thought everyone knew that. It's not really an unstuck function either.. Why would unstuck move you to closest town? In CBT it was truly an unstuck, it would only move you couple metres to the side or something.

I always use that because it's instant and I don't have to carry scrolls with me. I only carry Velika, Allemantheia and Kaiator scrolls.

Also something funny on yesterday's guild chat ... Most people didn't seem to know what TERA means .. I wonder how many in this thread do? TERA isn't this game's name, the real name is The Exiled Realms of Arborea ..

This has probably been discussed but I just noticed it.

I went to gamestop.com and I can either buy a physical package kit of the game for $49.99.......... or I can buy a digital download for $49.99. One comes with actual physical *stuff*, the other is completely "imaginary".

Seriously? Same price? o.O

Anyway, I like to counter the Elin banter by saying that Castanics are dirty sluts, High Elves are pompous narcissistic assholes, Humans are worthless slave pigs, and Amani are overgrown lizards. It soothes my ego, whether I'm RPing or not. <3
This is beautiful and I may borrow it :)

Will definitely be on Celestial Hills unless they lock the server population. Will probably start playing in about a week (traveling this week).

^Digital and physical stuff has always been like that in MMOs from what I've seen. Some shops sell the digital for lower than the 49.99 that is in EME shop tho.

Are you planning to play on PVP or PVE server Vexx?

I usually end up with at least one character on a PvP just for grins but most of my time in an MMO is spent doing things like Syn and Kereko are talking about - roleplaying. So Celestial Hills is probably my natural destination.

Yeah... you're right on pricing, but it was just a sort of... "hey.... wait a minute." moment. Hopefully, a physical copy at least saves me a few gigabytes in data transfer.

Something just happened and now half the servers are offline despite EME saying maintenance was canceled. Oh well, it's late anyway, I should really go to bed. :D

Sometimes I'm honestly embarrassed to play an Elin because of all the crap that they get... Playing them reminds me of being an anime fan in real life -- the bad rep that those who fit the negative stereotype give the rest of us makes me ashamed of admitting that I like it to others. :/

I don't get much of the elin hate that other people seem to complain of. I think it's because I took the official description of Badass Adorable and just ran with it. I don't use the emotes a lot and my character speaks very formally, rather coldly and doesn't take guff from nobody. :) I know you seem to play your character the same general way--I haven't actually had the chance to RP with you so I'm not completely sure, though. :)

There are a lot of people RPing elin as they "look" rather than what the lore says. While I'm not completely opposed to that--I'm not going to sit here and tell someone how they have to RP, of course--but I thought the whole "cute yet badass" description of the elin is really what ultimately made me decide on them over human (my usual race choice in MMOs).

Plus I really like the combat animations for sorcerer. The elin sorcs are very acrobatic and do a lot of flips and pretty exhibits of athletic awesome. :heh:

Gotta love the sorc animations indeed. I chose Elin because well.. They're cute. That's all. I always play a female in MMO's anyway, but most don't have a loli option.. :heh:

But yeah.. I now only quest with a friend that is also a sorcerer.. We can kill pretty much anything with two Overchanneled, Celerified Fireblast's .. So quests take couple minutes at most. Anyway, I've noticed how bland human movements are as a sorcerer as opposed to Elins who flip and move around a lot. I especially love their animation for Fireblast where it looks like their hand generate fire, the disc in middle spins and strengthens it and thus envelopes the Elin before blasting away. I can't remember on top of my head how Humans looked like on FB but it wasn't anything special.

When I first got Fireblast I turned my guild note to "VTOL loli" for a long time due to the casting animation. :heh:

The animations for elin and popori slayers is cute, they use the sword to do their dodge :Heh: the popori lift them self up and shoot them self over it like gymnastics.
