Studio 8's doing this, so if nothing else it'll look incredibly awesome. I watched a few clips on youtube but old adaptation is olddddd. Story sounds kinda ok though (inb4Medakavibe). I'm totally ok with Studio 8 being the future light/sci-fi novels adaption group of Sunrise.

:topicoff: Kinda further confirms Horizon's one cour me thinks.

Staff & character lists are now up on the official website as well. OP by supercell, which of course makes tons of sense considering Nakamura Ryousuke directed the "perfect day" PV.

I dunno about ambitious, but it just seems like they handle all the novel adaptations lately. Horizon, Accel World, Nerawareta. All novels.

Mayu Watanabe (AKB48) plays Natsuki, the main heroine. She will also sing the theme song.

Yuutaro Motoshiro (Ao in E7AO) plays Kenji the male lead.

It'll be screening at Edinburgh as part of the scotland loves anime festival on October 20th

Here's their synopsis:

Spring marks the start of another new school year at a junior high school in Kamakura. A new transfer student, Ryoichi Kyogoku joins the 8th grade. Kyogoku has a very special proficiency in telepathy and has been ordered by his father to use this ability to scan other people’s minds and take over the school.

He instantly gains popularity at school from his good looks and charisma and he sets about taking control of the school. As people begin to fall under Kyogoku’s spell, he covertly manipulates his followers and pushes aside anyone who gets in his way.

With the school almost completely under the control of Kyogoku, only one boy seems unaffected – Seki. Does Seki have what it takes to save everyone from the clutches of mind control?

The designs aren't something that fares well with my taste. But I'm really digging this ultra sparkly tone they're going for, and it seems they won't be cheap on the animation either.

The synopsis looks like something in need of a good script, since probably the dialogues are going to make or break the story. Are the novels good in that regard?

I'm a little confused, the Anime News Network article on this from June 1st (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2012-06-01/sunrise-nerawareta-gakuen-anime-film-teaser-streamed) describes it as:

The story is set in Abeno 6th Middle School, a prep school attended by the main character Kōji Seki. The school puts a high emphasis on studying, but the resulting stress leads to unruly students. Michiru Takamizawa is elected the student council president, and she begins ruling over the school with a brutal iron fist. Kōji rises up against Michiru, and Kazumi Kusumoto joins him in the battle with the student council.

But then the most recent article (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2012-09-21/sunrise-nerawareta-gakuen-anime-film-trailer-posted) says the synopsis is:

Spring marks the start of another new school year at a junior high school in Kamakura. A new transfer student, Ryoichi Kyogoku (Daisuke Ono) joins the 8th grade. Kyogoku has a very special proficiency in telepathy and has been ordered by his father to use this ability to scan other people's minds and take over the school.

He instantly gains popularity at school from his good looks and charisma and he sets about taking control of the school. As people begin to fall under Kyogoku's spell, he covertly manipulates his followers and pushes aside anyone who gets in his way.

With the school almost completely under the control of Kyogoku, only one boy seems unaffected – Seki. Does Seki have what it takes to save everyone from the clutches of mind control?

The most recent article mentions the anime is a "new interpretation" of the novel, so maybe the June summary was of the light novel's plot, and the more recent one is the summary of the anime's plot, with the anime taking it a little different direction? I'm impressed by the trailer regardless, makes me want to hop on a plane to find a theater showing it...

This is correct. The anime is inspired by the original novel, in the same way that Mamoru Hosoda's Girl Who Leapt Through Time was. In a similar vein to that, I suspect that Kenji Seki in this film will somehow be related to Koji Seki from the original book.

It's worth noting that in the first live action film, Kazumi is the lead character, with Koji supporting her against Michiru. There is a Kyogoku character in the original story as well.

Incidentally, I subtitled the most recent trailer yesterday but I don't have a Youtube account to upload it to so it's on Vimeo (https://vimeo.com/49998398). I can't get my fancy fade in effects for signs to encode properly though as I know next to nothing about these kinds of things :(

lol well for me the title of the best background art in anime goes to the Mamoru Ooshi directed I.G movies of the 90's. Patlabor (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dmlwhaEEgE&feature=related), Ghost in The Shell (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WB-ik-Bpl0c) etc. Though Shinkai's might be a little prettier, clean and pristine (the comparison I was trying to make to how the NG trailer looks) while the 90's I.G movies looked grittier, lived in and atmospheric, but nonetheless take on a quality of their own that I fear has been losted to the dustbin of history

Something I didn't notice before, but a more complete staff list is up for Nerawareta Gakuen. The staff list is particularly interesting because instead of regular Sunrise staff on the movie, it looks like Ryosuke Nakamura brought with him a pretty complete team from his Madhouse projects:

Director: Ryosuke Nakamura (Aoi Bungaku Ep9-10, Mōryō no Hako)
Screenplay: Ryosuke Nakamura, Yuko Naito
Character Design/Chief Animation Director: Mieko Hosoi (Aoi Bungaku Ep9-10)
Art Director: Hidetoshi Kaneko (Aoi Bungaku Ep9-10, Mōryō no Hako)
Color design: Yuko Kobari (Aoi Bungaku Ep7-10)
Image Art: Yoshitsugi Yoshida
Screen Design: Kenichi Shimizu (Aoi Bungaku Ep9-10 animator)
Special Effects: Kumiko Taniguchi (Mōryō no Hako)
CG Director: Tomohiko Kan
Director of Photography: Shinichi Igarashi (Aoi Bungaku Ep9-10, Mōryō no Hako)

The work they're doing with H x H is consistently top-notch, and it's not being done on the cheap. And Chihayafuru is arguably the best show of the last year. Reports of their death continue to be greatly exaggerated and I still see no hard evidence they're in real trouble.

Honestly, I think it's great that the director has found a consistent team who he's comfortable to work with, and it doesn't matter what studio produces the actual project. In the end, it's good news for everyone if they turn out a good product, and the only difference would be who is funding it and where the work is actually done physically.

Everything is flawed in some respect which is a harsh reality I think a lot of people have a hard time coping with or can even be in flat out denial about at times, but this movie is just getting some kind of vitriol that's being taken astonishingly at face value from what I've seen and people seem legitimately angry about it's premiere. That sort of thing (the "absolute opinion" as I've come to call it) always makes me very skeptical and like I'm not getting an accurate assessment as to the qualities and flaws of a given work. I wish I could speak having seen the film myself (though that'll come in time) but to me an ever increasing number of anime reviews just seem to depend on how much the reviewer chooses to hold something up against the wall for it's shortcomings or put it on the pedestal for it's strengths (absolutes) and somehow I get the sense people really wanted to nail this one more than most judging by the tone and language used in a lot of the opinions I've seen.

To be honest the things I've heard sound like criticisms you could attribute to plenty of things that I often just don't see come up as total deal breakers which is frankly a little strange to me. Those two reviews you linked me seem like genuine attempts to dispassionately review/recommend the film to it's target audience though, which is frankly better than anything I've seen thus far. Very professional and considered (especially the latter one) so thanks for posting them.

I guess we'll see then, the one consensus I've noted is that it's a trend setter for visuals when it comes to animated film, which doesn't surprise me to hear after watching the trailers. To be honest reading the premise of the story I frankly don't and never did expect a plot line that would set the world on fire (and not just because the title bears an uncanny resemblance to a pretty crappy one shot 80's OVA (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=721)), break cleanly from all established conventions, nor lean in any particular direction towards hard sci-fi or romance so I'm not really surprised to see evidence to that end. I do however find it amusing how selective the idea of tropes and conventions and how much of a detriment they can be to something seems to be though. Sometimes it's at the forefront of criticism, other times obvious tropes are completely ignored for the sake of ones own enjoyment and at this rate one might as well be able to flip a coin when it comes to when the idea of tropeiness is going to crop up and take center stage.

The impression I get is that most of the negative reaction is due to the film being nearly incomprehensible unless you've read the original novel.

That doesn't worry me much as I have plenty of experience deciphering densely plotted and/or heavily compacted material via inferring what needs to be understood off of subtle cues and strands of dialogue. Call it a stubborn almost pathological will towards understanding and hyper-analyzing everything I encounter till it's committed to memory, but many is the time that I've been told something makes absolutely zero sense to someone and yet I'm able to understand it completely off of a first attempt so this really does not concern me barring it just being totally all over the place and lacking any semblance of pacing.

I don't think this is strictly speaking the case, although it certainly seemed like it just after the screening as I was discussing it with other people.

I think I was one of the very few people at the screening with any familiarity with the story of Nerawareta Gakuen, and my knowledge of that did help with certain parts of the film as it's something of a sequel to the original novel. The vast majority of the film has absolutely no reliance on the original novel at all and makes perfect sense without it, but there are certain moments that only really have the desired emotional impact if you know the original story, and I also think it makes some of the woollier plot elements clearer - but it doesn't completely excuse some of the gaps in the narrative.

(and not just because the title bears an uncanny resemblance to a pretty crappy one shot 80's OVA (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=721))

Bear in mind that "Psychic School Wars" is the title that Shochiku, the film's distributor, has chosen for it. It is not a literal translation, and no previous version of this story has been called that. It also has virtually nothing to do with the story, save that there are psychics and a school in it.

It's not an issue of pacing. The film is a bit long, but in general the pacing is very good. It is definitely an issue of things not being explained properly.

As I've mentioned elsewhere, there are three plot points in the film which are poorly handled. Two of these are foreshadowed by throwaway lines of dialogue, but when they are eventually revealed leave far too many questions unanswered. The third, unfortunately, is the ending, where although all the dialogue makes sense the events which are taking place come so suddenly out of the blue without any explanation that it seems like complete nonsense.

It's definitely a film I want to see again - out of the reviews you've linked above I think the Chaos Agent one is very much in line with my own thoughts on it. I think the reactions of people who hated it are valid, because the climax is so confusing dramatically it pulled most of the audience out of the film, but the vast majority of the film is really very good indeed.

Personally? I'd give it a 7 or an 8. The ending is a narrative mess, but the other storytelling flaws I can live with and the rest of the film I thought was really quite fantastic - I wouldn't hesitate to be thinking of a higher grade as it's really the fact that the ending is "so bad" that drags it down.

The dialogue is generally well written, the animation is lively and interesting to look at, the haracters are likeable etc. etc. It's just unfortunate that the climax of the whole film in particular doesn't live up to the rest of it.

I see...hope the BD is out soon...

The film doesn't open in Japan until November. Judging by similar films that Sunrise has released in the past few years (like Colorful or King of Thorn) I think we'll probably have another 10 months or so to wait until a BD release.

There's a new trailer out for the movie. Must. Use. Lens. Flare. In. Every. Scene.

It makes Star Trek look dark and dingy by comparison. Also the longer the trailers get for this movie the more it's starting to look like some sort of slow paced romantic comedy as opposed to a science fiction flick. I can certainly see how there might not be anything truly groundbreaking in this film (never expected it in the first place though), but I'm still holding out on it not making me confused and lost or whatever like the people that went to Edinburgh claim. I think it'll probably also help that I know now more what to expect and that when I finally get to watch it I'll have the opportunity to review any overly dense scenes to make sure I pick up on everything. Just not sure how interested I'll be in it if it does turn out to be mostly romantic comedy glitzy visuals or not.

Kana Hanazawa is playing one of the apparent love interests in the film. She's the dark haired girl with the yellow head band you see in the trailer that looks like she's got that whole refined elegant school beauty/idol (TM) thing going on.

Speaking of character designs, this trailer confirms for me that Sunrise Studio 8 must have some of the most bizzare yet strangely alluring character designs this year across more than a works. Lots of really lanky bordering on anorexic (if seen IRL) looking designs and proportions of characters with limbs that are noticeably disproportionate to their body size. Their females especially look like you could snap them in half like a twig with a little too much force, which makes it all the more strange since most of these shows are ultimately high intensity sci-fi battle anime. Makes me think whoever is the staff character designer has some sort of major leg fetish going on among other things. I think they're working that male gaze thing in any case. :uhoh:

I'm still expecting some major battle sequence out of this at some point despite how it looks in the trailer. I doubt they'll be able to help themselves.

I guess my Kanae Itou fanboyism isn't as blatant as i thought it was, though maybe it's more to do with Kanae not nearly getting enough roles as she ought to (and most of her main roles being in fanservicey anime) and us rarely ever crossing paths to begin with. Though i guess it's just as easy to think I'm talking about Kana since she has such a sizeable fanbase, not to mention the fact that she's in everything these days.

In any case, I certainly hope that's Kanae that I heard because otherwise I really am starting to lose the plot (though I guess it's bad enough that one half a line from a likely background character in a trailer is enough to make me comment on it. XP)

I saw the pv (after seeing sakuraso episode 05 pv)

The animation looks magnificent for me but I don't know about the story. I didn't read much about the previews post or tried to learn the summary. I just comes to me to check the pv when I saw it available after watching a video at youtube so I don't understand much but from the pv itself. It feels like there are much to happen but with only a movie length story.

It start from childhood until high school? a one sided crush from the girl to boy with the boy loving another girl who loves another boy. oh boy oh boy story. It looks interesting from the premises along but then here comes the sci-fi with the hourglass? or something device that the new transfer student own. A battle story at the end or a battle story? its like they like to put lots of elements into it but it doesn't have the time to put everything.

Well I hope it will be worth the wait.

Btw I read that its international release. Is is release in hong kong too. I can't read chinese -_- and I don't know how to know on what country its available for showing.
