I just finished watching FMP season 1, and I noticed on the last episode that as Gaul (finally) dies, you hear his voice echo "I love you Kashim." After that, Souske pounds the wall of the sub and seems pretty depressed. Who really is Gaul, and why does he (and Zaiido) call Souske "Kashim?" In Melissa's episode, Souske has some other name "Sagara Ineki" or something. Is Gaul some kind of relative? Manga readers? Novel readers? Anyone?

I believe 'Kashim' is Sosuke's original name or something, and Sosuke was not depressed....he was pissed off because even though Gaul is his arch-enemy, but throughout the serie he call Sosuke 'Kashim' as if he was a close relative, that's what ticks Sosuke off.
As for the 'Sagara Ineki' name, the name of 'Ineki' or something was just made up.....nothing more to it than that. That was the girls were like saying 'What kind of names is that?' while laughing it off.

Yeah it does kinda makes sense that Kashim would probably be his original name. He was raised in Afghanistan so it must have been his Arabic name they gave him living the lifestyle that he did there. Just my guess, I could be wrong.

I believe Kashim is what Souske was known as when he was young and still a rebel. Only those who knew him well probably called him that, like Zaid. Souske was not depressed but pissed of at the fact that Gauron called him Kashim. If i remember correctly, it is in episode 4 (Kidnap) and in one of the episodes after 15 (The rising wind in homeland 1) when it is revealed that it was Gauron who killed Souske's friends (the Guerillas) with the two ASs. He was pissed off coz Gauron was talking to him like they were nakama (friends).
Hope i was of some help.

You basically repeated what I said in my previous post, but only with different wording lol.

This is funny, and the post is late, but I actually went back and am watching season 1 again with a friend, and I figured out what everything is about.
In the first session, when Souske runs into Gaul for the first time (the first Arbalest battle) Gaul notes that Souske was the kid he was shot by at the Helmajistanian town of Kashim. Apparently, he also called him that from the start. So, I guess he really doesn't know Souske personally, he just calls him by his own place-name.
I guess I answered my own question.

Kashim is foreign for "Friend/brother" in Sousuke's native tongue. They hint at this quite a bit in both the mangas and novels.
Basically Gaul had brought Sousuke in as a valued opponent, and he playfully used "Kashim" to taunt him whenever they met.
It has nothing to do with Sousuke's name :)

Most enlightening thing about Full Metal Panic! that I've ever read.

Actually, I just found out that it is probably wrong. Kashim IS a significant name, read up the latest chapter of Full Metal Panic! Day by Day to discover how Sousuke got that name.

hmmm... Are the novels any good, arias? If I break out of the laziness barrier I just might try em out.

//post slightly edited because brain is not working at 1am.
WTF? As a FMP! fan you are OBLIGED to read the novels. What do you mean you haven't read it? Are you trying to get me to kill you? What are you spending your life doing? Why are you wasting your life away? Huh? HUH?! HUHHH!!?!
;)
I can't vouch for the translation accuracy, but I can say that the novel is a pretty entertaining read. Its well written by the translators, and the actual structure of the novel itself is also put together tightly by Gatoh. I keep up with all the chapters but I don't read extremely in-depth, given my extreme courseload this semester. I read more on any sections that contain Sousuke and/or Chidori, so I get a better perspective of their character and relationship.
Are you aware of the story that happens afterwards? The following is what I consider NO->MILD SPOILERS:
- Sousuke isn't the only person assigned from Mythril to protect Chidori, there's another agent "Wraith" protecting her; in fact I remember from some posts I read about the earlier novels (not translated and contents were manipulated to fit the anime), Sousuke is the DECOY guard. If he was attacked, and Chidori was left without protection, agent "Wraith" would actively protect Chidori. If not, this agent is always behind the scenes, throughout everything that happened in FMP.
- Tessa's brother, who she briefly mentioned in the anime, appears in the novel.
- The Arbalest has a Yukikaze type AI.
- Some development between Sousuke/Chidori
- Some REAL development in Sousuke's character
Ahhh. I can't go more without spoiling the story, but hasn't that enticed you to read? The novel is LIGHT READING; there's no complexity and symbolism involved. It's not like reading a literature text, it's very light on the brain and easy to comprehend, so it won't wear you out or anything.
I decided to take an excerpt from the novel, and I hope the good folks at Boku-Tachi won't mind.. As always, if you're sensitive to any type of spoiler, don't read this. Other wise, this will surely interest you.

She didn't cry, either. The grief of abandonment, the anger of it ending so soon, even the amusement that stirred up memories, none of these came gushing out. Without feeling anything at all, she just stood still like someone senile, staring at the worn-out envelope on the top of the desk.
"-also... Miss Chidori? Miss Chidori?"
"Yes?" "Do you have any information?"
If this had been a manga (*1) or something, about here would be the scene where she would yell out "I can't tell you the reasons, but I believe in him. Sousuke will definitely come back!" as if it were her business. But as sad as it was, being a complicated being of flesh and blood- she wasn't so simple a person to blindly believe such a thing.
"I don't have any information."
"..."
"...because I don't know anything about it," she answered in a monotone voice. Eri looked up at her with doubtful eyes.
"Have you two had another fight?"
"No."
"...if we can't get in touch with him by tomorrow, the principal will have to accept his letter."
"That'll mean he's dropped out?"
Eri didn't say anything.
Kaname took this silence as an affirmation.
"I see. I'll be going then..."
And with mechanical movements, Kaname turned about-face and left the faculty room. Just give it up.
He was just an illusion. Him saying "I'll protect you" was just a lie. That was how reality was.

Go get it. NOW.

Wow. You seem pretty passionate about it. I loved both FMP animes and am currently reading the English-translated mangas. I may check out the novels but at the moment, wasn't, since I was hoping on not spoiling a possible season 3 lol. :heh:
Btw, are there translations of the original series? (The part covered in season 1) If there is, I'll probably check it out to get better insight on the characters.

The English manga? Heh... I'd like to read more of that, but the scanlations stopped and I really don't know whether I want to invest my money on the manga series since it's basically a repetition of the anime. I'm not sure whether that would be worth it. Argh. Why did it have to get licensed?
Apart from that, no, there's no translation of the original series. There might very well be a FMP! season 3, but the way things are going now, we're not really sure of that, no? :D.. I also don't think quite highly of the *way* the anime was executed; sometimes it was pretty nice and smooth, but sometimes I wished it could have been more natural. The novel has got it down pretty well, so I'll probably just keep reading it. Remember, last chapter of the novel should be released this Sunday! :D
