View Full Version : Tales of Phantasia Game Discussion
Another RPG game, this one from Super Famicon(SNES of Japan). What i like about this one was the character actually "talked". Yep, I believe this was the first console RPG with "voice" features. Also, the characters have common anime character expressions such as huge sweat drops, and distorted facial expression. Overall a very interesting anime and in my opinion, it was a breakthrough in console RPGs with it's sound feature and superb graphics.
here's a link to some of the image galleries of characters. Very cool anime type rpg.

I loved everything about the game. The music, characters, storyline, and especially the battle system, the beginnings of the greatest battle system ever invented for an RPG.
None of that 'press a button and watch', it's like 4 player Street Fighter!
The Tales series has the one most important thing that most RPGs lack: Character Interaction. Not just character interaction during plot events, but interaction everywhere. It draws you in, getting you to know the characters better, brings them to life, and by the end of the game, makes you truely care about them.
Plus Arche is in it :)

Hmmm, your avatar sure resembles Arche alot. Is it her? :)

this game is great and if u can find the combo pad and find all the button combos it can be like street fighter. is anyone else getting the gamecube sequel?

Yes, my avatar is Arche.
It's a ToP figurine :D
And the new GC game isn't a sequel, it's a prequel.

I hope the ToP port to GBA makes it out in the us. The fantranslation of the Sfam game was a joke. "I bet she fucks like a tiger" gimme a break.
Loved the SNES version, played it all day.
And now, every now and then
Hope that the GBA version has some extra's :D
Can't wait till the OVA's are released this year

I played both an incomplete translation (years before any were available publically) of the SNES ver, and the PSX ver. Both were quite enjoyable, but I never finished either version.
You all should try, tales of eternia. AKA: tales of destiny 2.

No you don’t. lol The GBA version of ToP is worse then the SFAM version, and the music is a complete joke! Namco should fall over and die for releasing such a lousy port.
I agree, DeJap’s (http://www.dejap.com) translation of the game is a joke. I bought the PSX version of ToP, and it excels at nearly everything the original version was good at (save the instrument sets used on the music). There is also an ongoing fan translation of the PSX version (http://www.tales-cless.org/) of ToP underway, although progress is incredibly slow since there is very little experience from anyone in hacking Playstation games.

TheXev, you shouldn't forget that Dejap isn't making you pay for the translation so I guess you shouldn't even say such a thing.
As for the game, I found it a little too easy, even the last boss didn't give me any problem but it's still a great game with nice original fights ^^

Why not? They released it to the public. We all know as fansubbers that we are all open to such things. And it is a joke when more than half the dejap translation is made up.
I think you mistaken what I said : I said that there is no need to bash a translation group even if their work isn't perfect, they do it freely so you should be happy they do it ^^

I should be happy the made up a translation as they went along?
No you shouldn't. However, do realize that the game translation community has a MUCH SMALLER translator pool than the fansub community, even several years ago. Games are generally harder to translate than anime since they are generally quite long and most of them do not have voices AND people have to look up all the kanji to create tables for them (unless it's a PC game, in which case this isn't usually the case). So basically, imagine the fansub community with a few good groups, a good number of wanna-bes, and about 5 active-duty translators to go around for everyone. Add in more whiny fanboys and you've got the scene about right :) I mean, digisubs were pretty terrible back in the early days too ;)

How many of you have played this amazing RPG for the SNES? It was remade for Playstation, but it was a slightly different version. Anyway, I think this is one of the greatest of the golden age of RPGs, up there with FFVI and Chrono Trigger -- it would have been huge if it had hit the US during that period.
Dhaos, Cless, Chester, Arche, Klarth, Mint... really good stuff.

ToP IS the best RPG ever made. No wonders people still talk about it.
Yeah I loved that game. I wish they made an american version of it for PSX.
I should get the ps ver someday.....
but I still have ToD2 (not ToE.....) sitting in my drawer since I got it few weeks ago
gotta play ToD first >_<
hah, i just started playing this game around the time this thread was created. pretty good so far but im having a little trouble learning the attack controls. is there a specific way to do air or uppercut moves or is it strictly random?
is there a specific way to do air or uppercut moves or is it strictly random?
Well, I've only played the SNES translated version, and that was a long time ago. But from what I remember...
Press up on the controller, and tap attack rapidly to make him jump and stab downwards. Simply tap attack rapidly (without pressing up) and he will do a jumping slash. Note that you should be some distance away from the enemy for this to work. The Tiger Teeth skill is good against airborne enemies early on.
As a BTW, I've posted this link before, but I guess it won't hurt to repeat it for anyone who might be new to this game. This is a remix of the Fighting of The Spirit theme (http://www.ssh.ne.jp/mp3/top_fots.zip), done by Live House S.S.H. It's pretty good. You might want to check out their website (http://www.ssh.ne.jp/) (with a translator if you need to), as they have several remixes of video game themes there.

Tales of Phantasia II is out for ps2 in Japanese version. but i havn't found it in English yet. I have a music video clip for this. It's really cool. i will post it when i found the game preview cd :P
EDIT!!!! sorry everyone. i just notice It's Tales of Destiny II i got, not Tales of Phantasia :heh: sorry again :P
The best RPG ever. Along with Seikendensetsu3, Secret of Mana and Lufia.
Too bad they don't make them like this anymore. (kuch GBA-remake)
Especially the humor stuff like in the ninja village or on the ship (opening second act). :)
Can't wait for the release of the ToP OVA's. :D

I didn't know there's ToP2 for PS2.... when did it comes out?
Tales of Phantasia II?
This is completely false. The only Tales of Phantasia related game to be released lately is Tales of Symphonia, which is for Game Cube. ToS is a 'prequel' to Tales of Phantasia. The only reason we are getting this game in the states eventually is because Nintendo of America is doing the localization. Namco is a bunch of lazy bastards, but I won’t go down that path.
As far as PS2, the last Tales of game on PS2 was Tales of Destiny 2 (the real one, not ToE). Last I heard this game had next to no chance of coming state side.
Tales of symphonia is coming to PS2 though
also there's a new tales series "Tales of Rebirth", but releasing date is TBA.....

I really hated namco for not making a US version of TOD2...
And symphonia is coming to ps2...*happy*wonder will it come to the states?
TOR...the chance of playing it might be next year...

Yes, ToP for the Snes was a great game, except that the battle system kinda sucked :heh:
Battles would be fought often by Cless alone: when attacking, he runs all the way to the enemy, hits it, runs all the way back again. Especially in longer fights, this really strains your nerves :uhoh:
Chester wasn't bad with his bow, but didn't have a long range, and you use him early. Arche was the only useful one as soon as she got decent spells, but was very limited by her mana points. Mint was very cute, but also very useless most of the time, until someone got wounded and she could use a heal spell. hera other spells were absolutely pointless. Klarth was nice as soon as he got decent spirits, but was even much more limited in their use and besides that could only hit enemies with his sorcery book (whee).
Without this crappy battle system, it surely would have been even a good bit better.
Overall, I like Seiken Densetsu 3 better. It has a very nice and efficient battle system, and the story isn't so linear but depends upon who is in your party.
Besides that, Chrono Trigger was also a great game :D
I wonder if ToS, ToD2 or anything the likes will ever make it over to the PC...

ToP is very nice game. I liked the battle system. Dunno, never really got to like the turn based RPGs...
Currently I'm playing Soul Blazer and I love it. Terranigma is one of my all-time favorite RPG and Soul Blazer is it's predecessor. I love it how they ditch the intro and start with something like "Here wheapon, here world, there enemy, go save!". And the music ist just ingenious. The 80ies midi-music when you enter a dungeon always makes me laugh.

best.game.ever. i think it whoops all squaresoft titles on snes, even chrono trigger.
Tales of phantasia is the best i ever played... so similar to ff, but more fun... the battle system is good, even the music is good... http://www.rpgclassics.com/shrines/snes/top/downloads.shtml has all the music from ToP...
btw, karth and arche r good... just dont let them blast randomly, instead, take control of their casting... they get pretty powerful spells later on... u will use chester in the last part of the game too, besides the earliest. the bad thing is that u gotta train him up from a single digit level -_-. mint is useful... i always hav her in the party, and use her actively... she has some good effects, and u need healing if ur running around in the dungeons...
also, tap different directions when attacking to do different forms of attack, including stabbing. i think u double tap to jump attack, and u can stab while jump attacking too... beware, u might miss some enemies when stabbing, just cos they r too short... and some weapons hav higher stab dmg, or higher slice (normal attack) dmg.

my party wuz cless, mint, arche, n chester, but i got all 5 of them to lvl 99 cuz im soooooooo aweseome... or cuz i have too much time on my hands..
Excelent game, but I found the battle-system a bit "rushing" -didn't they fix that in the sequel? :eyebrow: Anyway, the graphics surely were good :)

I really enjoyed this game, althoug I never managed to get through... Don't remember, if maybe my save state was erased somehow or if I got bored. I think the scenes were really good made, and the sprites had so many expressions.
What I didn't like about Tales Of Phantasia, is the battle system. In fact, I kind of hate it... It's worthless. Very boring...

Are you sure? I was pretty certain ToS was a gamecube exclusive with no announcements about a PS2 release. If you could find a link confirming that, I'd appreciate(I would like that game :D).
Yes, I remember playing ToP. The most memorable thing about the game was not it's graphics, gameplay or the storyline. Actually, I thought the game had a rather lackluster storyline. The thing that really got me was the vocal theme song that was included in the game. A snes game that included vocal songs in a cartridge. It was quite amazing to hear :D.
Other than that the game was fun to play, certainly better than average but it was far from the best imo.

tales of symphonia is comin out on ps2, juss not in usa
Well I played this game and I got my Cless and Mint to lvl 99 and lvl 98, the others where like 80-95. I didn't use any cheat or codes, I just went through the dungeon, the big one you know(Like 50 lvl or more) I went down 1 time to the lovest lvl got to lvl 95 there with Cless. :p Last boss didn't have a chance. :heh:
I loved this game to, everything is perfect here.
Well I finnished the game not long ago, and I do have a "Saint Reaper" pretty rare weapon for soem guys, but I did found 12 of them sometime during the start.
Dunno how but it was good. Not to brag more about my invincble characters, but I had 9999hp and 999mp with Cless at lvl 65. Well I found those hp and mp booster stuff from time to time. 12 of them at time. No cheat nor codes.
Some guys/girls mentioned a game called Soul Blazer, well I finnished this game to. With pretty good stats, but it got deleted when I re-installed windows.
But no one mention a game called Terranigma this is really good, like Soul Blazer but much better. I think no one mentioned it.
Another one is Star Ocean. Snes version.

Yes, but the character sprites looked ridiculous on the map and the fight scenes drove me nuts! If only they'd make it without the random fights...Star Ocean 1 was much better.
...Tales of Phantasia 2 (PSX) was actually unrelated!

I'll agree about the battle system, it was just odd. For the most part I controlled Cless and he'd whoop everyone while my partie members randomly did stuff on their own.
I didn't really know how to control the other guys, (no manual), and when I did find out that you can, as I was fumbling through the pain of switching characters and setting up their L and S attacks, my other members were getting the whoop put on them. It just took too long. It really stopped me from completing this otherwise sweet game.

Most of the people I know that have played this game, also thought the greatest low-down were the battle system. Sure, it was creative and dynamic, and really something new. I guess this has a lot to do with what kind of type you are as well. I am the strategic type; I like to think ahead of the enemies and use beneficial stragies to conquer my enemies. Maybe you like the more fast, adventurous system? I'm not saying this is wrong at all, maybe we are just different types. < ^o^ >
I didn't like ToP's battle system either, but I guess it was a step in the right direction in the end since ToS's fights are great.
The frequency of random battles drove me nuts too, and some parts of the story seemed pretty bad.

ToP ... aaahhh memories .... I had it (I mean, I got the ROMs ^^) with FF 3, and I liked both .... ToP was great with its battle system ... FF3 was good with its storyline ... there were Seiken Densetsu 3 too .... oh, and Star Ocean, Terranigma, Live-a-Live, ..... argh, too much, can't remember every SNES games I've played and loved ....
TOP rocks! but to bad I didn't get the chance to play it T.T
Now looking forward to TOS and the new title~ :D
I hope this thread is still active.
TOP rocked severely. Definately the best RPG I have ever played. I really liked the battle system because it makes sence. The way characters are spaced and such makes it more of a "casters are support units" type deal. Which I thought was good. That way Cless can go and rock while the other get targeted if he can't protect them, or there's some other long range attacker.
Of course things improved with the 3d battles of Symphonia, and I know Star Ocean had that 3d system around the same time as TOP had its. TOP was just made better. The pastels set a good RPG-ish mood, that and the story reigned supreme.
Seriously, how amazing was the progression of that game?
TOD and TOE were both cool and improved a lot on the battle system, of course they both lacked storywise... Then TOS comes out and has a sweet story and an amazing battle system, go figure. I had to beat it in 3 days....so good... I think TOP took me months...
Anyway...
I just can't wait till the Tales of Phantasia OAV hits the public....

ToP is the Second best RPG ever. Chrono Trigger is number one.
ToP lasted me a long time, like, 65 hours. All characters were 99. It was the first game i ever did that with. Man.. they dont make quality games like the SNES rpgs anymore..
I got Stuck when trying to fix airship in that damn cave, but very fun that they had "rune potion" convert items into stronger/opposite type of item,
still remember first time i played it, i used up all my 5% hp/mp/str/agility
then i played it over again and noticed you could make them 2x better :p
and i loved the combat system, hated it in the beginning, but was it just me or did the Combo techs really really really really suck?
except for Natures rage or whatever they called it.
But i will always carry 1 memory through my life it's 2 words from the game
"indignation" and "first aid" :p
edit:
someone know a good walkthrough? muaha
But i will always carry 1 memory through my life it's 2 words from the game
"indignation" and "first aid" :p
The thing I'll always remember is Arche's... shouting on the boat when she was drunk (though Klarth's "I bet Arche fucks like a tiger" is a good number 2). Nintendo console games aren't exactly famous for their mature content, so I was pretty surprised by it. Maybe it was a bit of a liberal translation, but still...
