More info at http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/pressrelease.php?id=338 I'm glad I decided not to get the Perfect Collection box set after all. :heh:
Maybe it's time to buy EVA. I didn't want to spend the money buying individual volumes as the box set is cheaper but I want the director's cut episodes. I wasn't buying anything twice.
This release might justify the cost of individual volumes but it'd be nice if they boxed it and knocked a few bucks off. I'm not a die-hard EVA fan so I don't know...

What? Another version? I'm also glad I haven't bought Eva yet. But why should I buy this set?

Because of a high upgrade in video and audio quality, and the inclusion of a lot of extras and the Director's Cut episodes.

I stopped buying the original dvds when they first annouced these being done in japan so gonna have to start all over. Interesting though, all those extras, plus it has five eps versus the original dvd's four. Finally some commentary tracks. Possibly the first anime tv series dvd with decent extras, at least that i've heard of.

Eva: Renewal 5.1 mix = ORGASM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The video isn't bad either :P
Arg! They had to do it again! Now I'm even more confused! (http://forums.animesuki.com/showpost.php?p=51713&postcount=6)

I own the entire TV series on VHS
I own the entire series on DVD (both TV and Movies)
I have already ordered the DVD with the cut scenes
Now they've announced this. ;_;
Now, I'm going to have to buy it all again. I can only hope they re-did the subtitles. The first NGE DVD's subtitles were fine, but near the end the giant teal subtitles took up about half the screen at any given time. >.>

ADV puts in quite a few extras on some DVDs (the Steel angel Kurumi had ~30 minute "making of" scenes (...of the dub...))

Personally, if any of you own it, wait til they release a boxed set of it 2 years from now, no point in OVERSPENDING on something you ALREADY own...

First there was an Evangelion Remastered, an Evangelion Director's Cut, and now this? Can't we all just give Eva a break already?
Besides ... idiots claiming their the original VHS-Eva lovers will come and argue with newbies in Eva (like me). Hehehehe ...
- Navi
Too late for me for overspending, I had the Vhs, then bought the DVDs, and the directors cuts. At least I got to sell the VHSs on Ebay for a decent amount to help cover the DVDs. So I think I'm done.

Alright, this just pisses me off. I've been an EVA fan for about a year now, and I have an enourmous amount of respect for it because it's the anime that really got me into becoming an anime fan (Moving past shows like Gundam & DBZ). I first had a VHS of episodes 19-20 that I had two years before. Once I actually watched it I was completely hooked. I downloaded all the episodes (back when Kazaa was actually useful), and was completely obsessed with it. Then I went legit, and bought the boxed set back in September, right before ADV announced they would release the directors cut. I was pretty pissed off at first, until it was confirmed it was only for the last two volumes, which I ended up buying. Now there going to release the directors cut in its entirety? Enough is enough. Put Eva to bed already and move on. They have the movie already. Isn't that enough? I most certainly will not waste my money on another EVA boxed set. The directors cut for episodes 21-26 is enough for me. From what I hear, the directors cut for episodes 1-20 doesn't have much in the way of new scenes, which is why initially ADV decided to only release the directors cut for 21-26. While I love Evangelion for what it is, I'm not gonna waste another $200.00 to buy another set of Eva DVD's. Until the movie comes out, just put Eva to bed and move on already! If anything, I'll just rent it. There will be alot of extra's so I guess it'll be worth it for hard core EVA fans.

:p If you want to blame someone for Renewal blame Gainax for it since they are the one who make it and blame the fan of eva who want ADV to bring it here. :)
Can't wait till it on dvd so I can buy it.yes I'm a big eva who brought everything even the japanese game that I barely understand.
For those who don't know which versions are different from which versions, can someone list the differences for all the R1 Eva DVDs?
As for the one over here in Japan:
VHS/LD version: jittery pictures, original TV version+added scenes
DVD first release: basically a LD drop onto DVD, heavy pixelation.
DVD second release: Remastered Edition with all episodes in 5.1ch sound, picture jitters fixed, includes both the original TV version and the added-scenes versions

For the TV series (ADV Films):
VHS: Same as the Japanese versions, low quality video and scratchy audio. First only in dub format followed soon after with a subtitled format for about $10 more.
DVD first release: Video and audio quality equal to the VHS release (maybe less so for the video quality, there were some compression issues on the first DVDs plus some added languages).
DVD second release: The boxset... Just a re-hashed re-release of the first release but instead using really ugly teal subtitles.
DVD third release: The Director's Cut episodes... get people to re-purchase the last two volumes for a total of about 6 minutes added footage.
And now the upcoming fourth release...
For the Movies (Manga Entertainment):
DVD/VHS first release: Death&Rebirth was released...
DVD/VHS second release: End of Evangelion was released...
DVD/VHS(?) third release: Directors Cut - Genesis Reborn
DVD/VHS(?) fourth release: Director's Cut - Ressurection
DVD/VHS fifth release: End of Evangelion re-released (aka. EVA2 or something like that) but no real noticable difference between it and the previous.
And I belive there is a re-release for Death&Rebirth too.
Those of us who have been buying the North American releases have been getting the short end of the stick for sometime now.

Yeah, from what I hear, when the final edition to EVA was released in Japan, it didn't include the original episodes 25 and 26 but The End of Evangelion in a two episode format. So it looks like ADV will get a shot at the End of Eva after all. Maybe that's part of the reason why they didn't license the original version of the movie.
Mr_Paper
2004-04-21, 12:39
Manga Entertainment holds the rights to the Movies if I remember correctly, that's why they released a second version of End of Evangelion. If ADV now has the rights to the movies I'm left wondering how much money it cost them.
Silver_Scorcher
2004-04-21, 12:45
ADV probably knew about the remastered edition or whatever from years ago. So maybe if Manga didn't license the movies, we'd most likely still be waiting for D & R and End of Eva to be released. Who knows. But from what I remember reading in Anime Insider a few months ago, the remastered edition released in Japan included The End of Evangelion in some format. I'm not sure about Death & Rebirth though.
Why are they calling it the platinum edition?
Wouldn't it make more sense to call it renewal like the japanese release?

yeah, it seems that way to me too. Though when (I assume it will be) this newest set is released in a box I'll probably break down and buy it. I'm a fan and I'd like to have Eva in 5.1 and nice quality picture. So, I guess I'll be waiting for the box.

I am a bit surpise that people arent happier about having a r1 release of the renewal version !
I understand ADV did too much version and some of you have enough with it...
I personnaly did not buy or see any r1 version of evangelion but in term of quality I have always head or read that they weren't good :/
I nearly wanted to buy the z2 european dvd from Dybex but again the quality wasn't top and I give up on it (had also other dvd to buy anyway)
well my point is the all z1 / z2eu release of evangelion doensn't seem good in term of quality... when I head of the renewal version and read they do an awsome work remastering the picture and sound (including 5.1 version) I was really interested only jap dvd are expensive and carry no subtitle... so had hope they released it in z1 and now they do ;)
Hope they dvd will be as good as what I have head from the japanese one but if it is some I will personnaly be happy to spend money on it ;)
Well like I said this will be my first version of evangelion so it helps for buying it !

I'll be buying the new DVD's. I hadn't seen Eva until a few months ago, and I really liked it so I was considering buying the box set that was already out, until ADV announced this. I agree they're milking the series for all it's worth but they're a business trying to make money and you can't really blame them. Movie companies release new so-called "special edition" DVD's all the time, so it's nothing new.

No I don't blame them either. But considering that they just released the so called directors cut a couple of months ago, it's good reason to get pissed off. I got the original boxed set shortly before they announced the directors cut. I was pissed naturally, until I found out it would only be 2 DVD's covering 21-26. Now not even 3 months later, there saying that another special edition will come out this year, including 21-26. Now if I were to get the platinum edition, I'd have three different versions of episodes 21-26. That's a bit much. I don't know what I'll do now. The extra's sound very enticing, so I'll probably rent it. Or if I can get a good buyer, I'll sell my original boxed set. We'll see.
Not electrum. Platinum, actually.
So does anyone know the details behind this rumored "Neon Genesis Evangelion Platinum"? Has it been released yet? What's different about it?
:)
Right here:

Surely they won't drag it out?
So how long is the estimated interval between each individual platinum DVD release?

Going by ADV's recent track record with releases I'd say 5 weeks in between volumes.
Why are they calling it the platinum edition?
Wouldn't it make more sense to call it renewal like the japanese release?
Its not called Renewal because its NOT renewal. Basically, ADV doesn't have rights to all the renewal material such as the movies, so calling it Renewal would be kinda stupid. Anyway, pretty much everything quality wise will be the same as renewal.

So what exactly will be in it? I know the major thing is every frame has been cleaned up, and the extra's are supposed to be huge, but will it be the "director's cut" version of EVA that ADV did with the last 6 episodes? I'm guessing it is but I wanna make sure.
i'm not really sure bout this but it seems to have change the sotry at episode 21 and continue to 50+ ...i'm not sure whether i'm right another knows?

Hey! I have a question...
On Amazon.co.uk when I search for Evangelion Platinum it brings up two results:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000244FRS/qid=1091356125/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl/026-9006748-7494010

The second one says "Collsubs" what is that?
It also has 4 episodes on the disc while on that site mentioned earlier (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/pressrelease.php?id=338) it said that each disc will have 5 episodes?!
TechnoMage

gravitation, DVD1 of the Platinum Edition really does have 5 episodes (and 2 interviews/commentaries by ADV staff I think). The reviews on Amazon's page there are for the older Eva DVD releases from years ago... As to what the "Collsubs", I've no clue.

what abou this? http://www.eva-r.com/ it said to be evangelion ressurection too but its not the directors cutTaken from that site:"What is Eva:R? In short, Eva:R is an original "fan fiction" or "Novel" based on Gainax's original television series Shinseiki Evangelion, taken to a creative extreme. Eva:R is our way, as fans, to pay Homage to the talented and creative people behind NEON GENESIS EVANGELION, on many areas of the globe. This is the most sincere form of expression, for us, of our gratitude and respect for GAINAX co. Ltd, Mr Hideaki Anno, Mr Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, and for the Cast and production Crew of ADVision. Our intention? To better understand the creative process it takes to realize so vast and complex a vision as GAINAX undertook, while exploring the unanswered and sometimes unasked questions that lay within the original series itself. We wish to reiterate, for the record, that this is merely an exercise in expression and exploration, nothing more. As always, we hope you enjoy this work, which we have endeavored to produce in the highest quality"
It's a fan fiction... It's made by fans with no connection to Gainax or ADV.

Jeezum Crow. Will they stop milking EVA already? I mean, releasing it over and over and over again is getting freaking annoying. Yes, it might have better audio and video clarity, but EVA's getting whored out to the extreme. I really wish they'd let the series rest for a few years before bringing out a new SUPER ULTRA DELUXE GOD BOXSET FOR MATCHING SERVICE.
This having been said....time to save up for this set. -_-;
I'm not 100% sure, but didn't the ADV DVD's have overlays of English text replacing Japanese for things like store-signs, computer displays, and the like? Does anyone know if that's the case, whether that has been corrected in the Platinum edition?
microlith
2004-08-05, 09:43
First off, milking EVA is Gainax's fault. ADV just gets to come along for the ride.
Second, the very first Evangelion DVD (released sometime in 2000) had overlays. It's believed that discs 2 and 3 were in the pipe with overlays and as a result of the backlash over the first disc, they had to scrap work on the 2nd and 3rd DVDs.
ADV then released the remainder of the series, discs 2-8, without overlays. Some time in 2002 or so they released a redone version of disc 1 sans overlays, pauses, and redone by a different dvd mastering studio.
Platinum is better than any release before because the video was remastered (I believe it's progressive,) both audio tracks are 5.1, and Gainax went and removed all the jittering from the video so it's stable without looking like it was paused. They did this for Death & Rebirth and End of Evangelion, but since ADV doesn't have license to them they didn't get all of it. And you know, somehow I doubt Manga will release a pair of updated, non-broken DVDs.
i want them to make the damn Love EVA manga's into a anime! >.<
i loved that manga! (by the way thats the fan translate name, its called Neon Genesis Evangelion: Girlfriend Of Steel 2, yeah its a manga based on the 2nd game)
I love my eva...and who are these people posting GOS pics saying its a new series! Dont be fools! hehe :heh:
Also anyone who didnt get there mits on the last DVD's (any version) may not known in america, and england, they cut certain scenes from the anime which are in the DVD's, these include rei forming into a angel like creature and all the mini reis (like on the movie) appearing on shinji ^_^ hehe. Directors cuts are good...now why do they cut these 'too japanese' scence. it so dumb...lol nehoo back to topic which i just noticed was all the way back in april..oppsy

Hey guys, I just got the platinum edition box set from best buy and there is no volume 7!!!! I havent opened it yet, but I can see the disks and it is only 1-6!!! And I saw online that there are 7. Can someone help me? Is volume 7 just a not important one? If it is important I will return the box set and maybe buy the 10th aniversarty one, whenever that comes out.

IIRC the seventh disc has the "director's cuts" of episodes 21-24. Did you pick up the thinpak? If so it sounds like a packaging error, so I'd definitely return it just for the principle. Check and see if other sets have the 7th in case it was a batch mistake.
BTW, the anniversary stuff is a ripoff.
The platinum boxset is only 6 DVDs. (Check the picture on Amazon) Afaik, this is another "we strip all the extras and reencode it on one fewer disks" boxset.

Thanks guys.
The video looks significantly better (cleaned up and remastered) and the audio is 5.1 now.
I'd recommend this set (I don't have it, but I do have the individual discs):
http://www.dvdpacific.com/item.asp?ID=689451
Also, when searching for specific content it's better to use the advanced search option and then search ONLY in thread titles. There are TONS of threads that may contain a certain keyword (especially something as common as Evangelion), but there are very few which have it in the title, for obvious reasons.
Nergol announces that Evangelion still sucks.

I'd recommend this set (I don't have it, but I do have the individual discs):

Also, when searching for specific content it's better to use the advanced search option and then search ONLY in thread titles. There are TONS of threads that may contain a certain keyword (especially something as common as Evangelion), but there are very few which have it in the title, for obvious reasons.
That would make sense, if Evangelion wasn't in the title ;)

No what I meant was that if you search for "Evangelion" in thread titles you'd only get a few hits returned -- and this thread should be one of them. If you search in "posts" then ANY thread that has ANY mention of "Evanglion" will be listed, and the quantity of those will easily drown out this (older) thread.
A test:
"Evangelion" in thread titles = 39 hits (for me, that includes some deleted threads)
"Evangelion" in posts = 500 hits (probably more, vBulletin probably stopped counting)

Hrm..I wonder why I didn't get any threads returned when I just did a thread title search for Evangelion.
I searched twice to make sure the spelling was right, to. :twitch:
