Well I'm sure this might have been a thread before the new forum went up, but I'm not sure since I'm a rather new member. At the end of the TV Special the ending cuts off with him saying Hokkaido. Is that the ending? Or is there more to it because it seems like it was cut off short. Thanks

LiQuid|J

There's the movie. It takes place in Hokkaido, though it has nothing to do with any of the existing cast members other than Onizuka, so I'm not even sure why they bothered eluding to it in the TV Special.

Since, I basically memorize the entire script for GTO Special, etc. Mirakuru Fansubs (retired) was working on it, but we didn't have time to do anything besides translations and a few editing, we passed it off to Japan-TV in hopes in finally getting it subtitled, since we knew too many people were waiting for it to be sub. I mean no use sitting on translations, no? Thanks to Japan-TV for finishing it off where we left off.

You have to watch the TV series first, then Live Special, last is the Movie. They all play a part and one story is part of the other, intertwine etc. Onizuka never intended to stay at any school for too long, since he wanted to change students everywhere. So, once his job was done at one school, it's sort of off to the next to fix things. So, he's more like a substitute for hire.

I like to see more Japanese Drama translated, but I offered to help JapanTV, but one of the OPs told me they were too busy with other projects, so maybe next time or hopefully more Japan Drama groups pop up. I'd like to start a drama subbing group maybe some time next year...doubt it though...considering how lazy and unreliable I am... -_-

yup thanks...I haved watch all of them in that order, I just felt like they could've done a better job in ending the special since the movie wasn't really connected to the series due to the different cast. Cause the ending of the special didn't even have ending credits or anything....it just cut off.

thanks for the info.

I just got done watching the GTO live action yesterday, and I have to say I really loved it. It was different than the anime, but I really liked it. I cried a few times.. And I have to say I really loved the ending. I haven't seen how the anime ends, though.. So I couldn't compare. What did you guys think of it?

My second question is..

I've heard that the manga and the anime were actually based on the live action. Is that true?

K_R

Manga came first, was not very popular. Then came the TV series, which was very popular. The manga became popular as a result. Then it was made into an anime series.

The anime series doesn't really end. It seems to follow the manga then suddenly stop.

Don't forget to pick up the TV special and movie.

Like K_R said, the story sort of just stops like 5 minutes before the end of episode 43... and they plug in a 5 minute quickie ending.

Yes. The series was great, but then they just dropped a bomb for an ending that leaves the question if there will be a second season and there are some unanswered questions.

Is the GTO drama movie just the whole anime but condensed? ^^;; I thought that was it, so I didn't download it.. I forgot to download the TV special too. ...

I'm starting to wonder if I should download more dramas @_@;; I feel so silly.. Any suggestions for good Japanese dramas?

Oh.. About the differences between the manga and the live action, I don't know. I think it's different. I personally liked certain characters a lot more in the live action than in the manga, though.. ^^; Like Onizuka himself.

"Golden Bowl" is the only other dorama I've enjoyed as much as GTO. "Long Vacation" is supposed to be good also.

I've enjoyed both "Summer Snow" and "Beautiful Life", but if you don't like purely romance dramas, I don't think you'll care for either. I need to go watch some more dramas, but I never seem to get around to it.

I wish they'd make an anime adaptation of Shonan Junai Gumi, the manga that takes place before GTO, when Onizuka and Ryuji were still young punks.

I'm watching long vacation, I like it :) Hee... its a classic and its my favourite. :D

Golden Bowl is not bad, Beauty and the Beast starring Matsushima Nanako and Fukuyama Masaharu is very good too.

Average length of jap dorama is about 11-12 episodes, but they may have a number of seasons though.

Beautiful Life was a good one. I liked To Heart too.. :heh: And for non-japanese dorama suggestions, I'd suggest Bright Girl's Success story. It's a korean drama and it's really quite charming and funny. :D

LiQuid|J

Beautiful Life made me depressed for a week. :( I wish I were exaggerating.

I'm watching Long Vacation and Bright Girl right now. J-TV does both of them. Both are good. But yeah I get kind of a silly feeling when someone walks in on me watching "dorama". Most of the time I scramble to pause it and try to look like I was just surfing the net, but I think some of the people in my house are suspecting I'm really into Asian porn. :heh:

Gaara11

The GTO movie sucked compared to the series not to mention long ass boring. I saw 1 eps of Long Vacation and really didn't like it. If I feel like I'm forcing myself to finish the eps then its no good. I kinda like Beautiful Life and Good Luck starring that guy but Long Vacation was not in par w/ them. For a classic, I'll say Summer Snow is the best!

Kurara
2003-11-22, 00:59
I watched the GTO movie yesterday, and yeah.. It wasn't that good. X_X I stopped right in the middle..

Also, I started watching Summer Snow. It's.. really good. I'm so surprised, because we all know that drama tv shows really suck here. But the story is really touching..
And by the way.. Is it my imagination, or is the actor in summer snow the same actor that plays the guy who gets picked on at first in GTO? ^^;;

I wanted to see Long Vacation, but there's no seeds

CompShrink
2003-11-22, 01:45
Yes, the younger brother who is mostly deaf, Jun, is the guy that always got picked on in the begining of GTO live. Summer Snow was the first Japanese live action I saw, and apparently it's really well known in the english dorama watching forums, and I deffinately can see why, it was great. I won't give anything away, but imho the ending was REALLY well done.

Sailor Moon live parody subs are funny, but I really love the commericals, as they did parody subs of those too! I wish there were more than 3 parody... I'm actually still watching it... not sure why, it's pretty lame, but that makes it funny, cause I laugh at how pathetic it is. It for one reminds me that not every fansubed series is great, so I will enjoy the others more... :^P

Your under arrest live is alright, not any real plot, 2 romances that kinda form a plot, but not really. It's entertaining to see occationally.

Sad to say, Japanese dorama is actually on the decline now. Due to the Korean wave that hit the whole of Asia, Jap dramas are being replaced by Korean ones on TV. Newer shows may be good, but not exactly classic. We constantly see dramas with a particular ocupation as the background setting, although its nice to have insights into them, its shows that they are running out of creativity.

The lead stars in the early and mid-nighties are all above 30 already, but we have yet to see any young stars make any breakthroughs. Most of the new-blood looks too kiddy or they just can't act. Past hopefuls like Ryoko Hirosue, Kyoko Fukada, Hideaki Takizawa never ever achieve the popularity of Takuya Kimura and Matsushima Nanako. Even then, dramas starring the A-list stars don't gather high viewership ratings like they used to.

I still enjoy Jap drama though, maybe I am just old-school. Hope they pick up soon. :upset:

At first, I wasn't so sure about this show. I mean, I was so used to the anime version of Onizuka. The first and second episode didn't really help it any. But after the third episode, I began to become ingrossed in the show. It just sort of grows on you.

A nice tidbit of info. In the manga, Onizuka never leaves the school. He stays as a teacher even at the end. Only the anime and live action have him leave at the end. I could never understand why they made him leave in the anime and live action. Bleh.

Kurara
2003-11-23, 14:26
Tenkoy: I know what you mean. ^^;; That sort of deceived me as well.. But I haven't read a lot of the manga. I just read the first issue.

And to people who were commenting about Sailor Moon live action.. In the begining, I thought it sucked. But as I watch it more, I think it's a really good live action now.. They really payed attention to small details, like the way the characters dress and other things like that. I like how when they're in the secret place, each Sailor Senshi has a drink of their own color. It's so cute ... The actors are getting better too.. In my opinion. ^^

So what time period did the movie take place in, compared to the special and the show. Also, how long after the series did the special take place. Its confusing why hes always leaving GTF, and at the end of the special he was about to ask her to marry him, but he still hasn't done it with her the 2nd time in the movie? Also, I thought they ended up getting married at the end of the series, but that never happened.......

The manga was not popular so they decided to make a tv series. Hmmm...
If that were true, I wouldn't understand the reasoning behind it.

I'm positive the comic was popular even before the TV series, I know cause alot of people introduced it to me way back before the dorama came out. It's was just slow to catch up because shonen MAGAZINE sucks and the only reason people started buying it was cause of GTO. Well the only reason I bothered to read it lol.

Geez, every 2 months a new GTO Live thread manages to find it's way into this forum. If you liked GTO Live, I suggest you try out some other J-Drama. Here are series that I watched that I recommend:

Summer Snow <--- HIGHLY recommended! Very funny and touching
Good Luck <--- Very interesting and highly recommended
A Beautiful Life <--- A very good 'real life dilemna' portrayal

Also Triumph in the Skies is good (its a C-Drama). It is similar to Good Luck in that they both deal with pilots/airline people and their lives. You can download all of the above mentioned at Japan-TVs website (where I presume you got GTO Live). If anyone wants more info ask and I will post summaries about what each of the above dramas is about.

I thought the la series was a lot better than the movie.

The movie was decent and kept a "one last showing" of Onizuka, but the series takes all the characters from the school you know of, and changes them slightly to be more real, but keeps their essence.

Very interesting I wasn't aware that the live action was produced before the anime, now that I think about it though it makes more sense that way. It would've been a huge headache to cast real people to fill the shoes of the ever eccentric anime characters. However following it this way allowed for a definitive level of reality and depth to be present in both the anime and the LA.

Thanks for the JTV site link and the recommendations I fired up the ol bit torrent and hopefully sooner or later Ill be enjoying the first episode of Summer Snow.

I felt a little foolish, truth be told, when someone mentioned that a GTO LA thread shows up every so often, but when I posted it I had just joined the forum, and I hadn't seen anything about it. It raises an interesting point, well maybe two points. One is that this place is much more active than I first thought especially with people joining at a fairly steady rate. Second, GTO LA must be good or at least interesting or why else would it keep resurfacing. Hmmm.

Anyhow my opinion...

I really, really liked it. The one thing in GTO that I disliked was the occasional lack of realism with Onizuka getting hit by minivans, etc. It definitely helped one to feel the real power of Onizuka, the guy's a force of nature. The live action was very well acted out, especially the movie to fit so much into so little time, and develop some very deep characters, even if one of them talked to a cow... The music was good too but I really like the theme song, Poison, especially the rendition of it featured during the credit roll of the movie. The one thing about GTO that keeps me re watching it is not the depth of the characters, the humor, or even the quality of the story, its some of the real world implications it presents. Especially the overall look at education, I think it would be very interesting indeed to have a few teachers like Onizuka in every school, if it weren't completely foolish I would say that every teacher should be like Onizuka, well at least like the core of Onizuka :heh:

Yeah by the way I have a tendency to be long winded, so feel free to ignore this post as you see fit. :topicoff: or something like that... :hmm:

I liked the LA a lot better than the anime.... i think all 3 follow the same storyline, i only read the first 2 volumes of the manga tho....

:hmm: since' we're also talking about other jdramas... i just started watching summer snow.... it's really good, but i think i'm too westernized to fully appreciate it... the only other jdrama i've watched is Your Under Arrest... and that was REALLY good... i liked it as much as GTO!!!

This was one of the first Jdramas I saw, and it's still one of my favorites! And it's funny beacause I absolutely hated the anime and manga version :uhoh:

I became a big fan of Takashi Sorimachi because of this drama, and I even made a fansite about him^_^

Intresting. I like this actor too. I loved him as Hotman even more then as Onizuka! ^^
But I'm more into kdorama presently but I'll be back to jdorama soon. Probably when SARS release IWGP4 or something.

Will the anime get a second part? I bought the dvds. In the interview of the creator, he said he was planing on making a continuation of the anime. What ever happened to it?

Although the live-action is drastically different from the manga and anime counter-part I still find it very entertaining, I'm very relieved that they kept the main arcs of the story intact, well some of them, it seems like 1 episode is a arc for a character, for example, when Noboru tried to commit suicide from all the bullying.

Odd though that Miyabi switches Anko for this one. :/
