I believe that they made "Gravitation" into anime... Yup, back in the '90s, it looks like, but I don't know of very many shounen-ai/lesbian titles that got the same treatment.

Would there be many groups fighting - in a manner of speaking - to sub a title in this genre, though?

er Yami to Boushi to Hon no Tabibito has some lesbianism you might wanna check it out. I think its more of an fanservice kinda thing though.

Both types of homosexuality occur frequently enough to have genres with names (several names in the case of male homosexuality). You obviously just haven't seen any of them.

Right now im watching two series that have gay and lesbian characters. Read or Die has lots of Lesbian undercurrent and also Fruits Basket has at least one male character that is in love with another. Both are awsome and both licensed so I guess it's cool in the States too. :p

Actually, homosexual themes seem to occur quite often in anime.

There's Saber Marionette J, Otaru's friend, Hanagata seems to want him.

Then there's Sailor Moon, there is a lesbian couple in that one. I'm not that familiar with them so I don't know their names.

Onegai Twins seems to show a guy who's atleast bisexual.

Not to mention that series Graviton they were talking about.

It seems that homosexuality is shown far more prevalent in Japan than anywhere else that I've seen. It appears to be far more acceptable there than anywhere else, that I've noticed anyway.

Here's some anime with Homosexuals in it:

Gravitation
Sailor Moon
Card Captor Sakura
Fushigi Yuugi
El Hazard
Yami no Matsuei (Descendants of Darkness)
And (sniffle sniffle) possibly Peacemaker Kurogane, though I hope I'm wrong
Cowboy Bebop (1 episode, side characters, but rather ...not a pleasant scene)
Rurouni Kenshin
Fruits Basket (at least bisexual)

For incest: Ayashi no Ceres

This is just off the top of my head

X TV Series kinda feels like it sometimes between Kamui and Fuma.

there are plenty OVA series out there that feature male/male relations, like there is Zetsu Ai, Kizuna, Level C, Boku No Sexual Harrassment and really the list goes on. If you mean mainstream then most of us are familiar with Gravitation and Yami No Matsuei whos main characters are gay males.

So really, I dont think Japan has such a shortage of these types of content.

I think lesbian anime are more lacking though. :p Because it seems that the majority of female anime fandom LOVE boyxboy stuff.. I don't think I'll ever understand why though. ^^; You'll find plenty of boyxboy anime. Most have already been named.

Too bad I can't find much girlxgirl. ;_; Ah well.

I totally agree w/ u Koshiba and I share your opinion. A girl to girl action would be awesome. :p

there are quite a few yaoi (gay/male x male) animes out there but i dont remember any lesbian ones apart from neptune and uranus in Sailor moon. You get ALOT more gay/lesbian themes in mangas, and when i say alot i mean alot :D

Too bad I can't find much girlxgirl. ;_; Ah well hehehe lucky for me male x male is easy to find^_^:D

For Yami no Matsuei, the main villian is definitely gay. While the series has gay overtones throughout, they never explicitly say the main himself is gay, and further, he seems kinda shocked and grossed out by the overtures of the main villian. So I would say he's probably straight. Or at least a repressed closet case =D

If I was being touched by the villian I'd be grossed out too, he's scary chou-eww-face! In the manga doesnt he fall for the younger guy? I dunno, I am not a fan of the series either......but its pretty gay none the less. :p

Also, the original Bubblegum Crisis had alot of lesbian undertones as well as a bed scene in OVA 5 that shows two sister-vampire-robot chicks gettin' ready for some sweet vampire-robot girl lovin'!! But other than that there is a whole lot more gayness floatin' around in anime than there is with the lezziez.

Utena is prolly the best example, and an EXCELLENT anime!!

In reality, homosexuality was rife in the shinsengumi. So, it's not out of the question to portray it in the show. If you get a chance, see the film "gohatto" or "taboo" by Nagisa Oshima. It deals directly with the issue of homosexuality in the samurai brotherhood (the film is based in the shinsengumi).

In Yami no Matsuei who wouldn't be scared of the main villain I mean he is a (sits on her spoiler box)

But I did pick this name before watching Yami no Matsuei :innocent: (sighssssss)

And the main char does fall for the younger dude and though less obviously vice versa.

Resurrecting this thread due to the (I guess) imminent release of Maria-sama ga Miteru.

Catholic lesbian schoolgirls. No way in hell I'll be able to stay away from this one...

you need a healthy dose of airmaster. Although there isn't any sex or stuff like that there have been lots of kissing between male/male and female/female characters. They never really mention it but it's there for you to see

Thank you very much but no. I'm not getting near a fighting anime unless world + dog claims it's the best thing since sliced bread.

At least Maria-sama ga Miteru seems to have the basic premises of a standard shoujo. Thats enough to get my attention.

Maria-sama ga Miteru preview showed that it has a lot of shoujo-ai (but of course I could be wrong) so count me in watching this one.

Oniisama E (story takes place in an all-female school as well) appears to be the predecessor of Maria-sama ga Miteru. So those who are interested in shoujo ai should check it out.

whoa? there are lesbians in Sailor moon? I assume none of the scouts right and that it is just implied lesbians too?

mm..unless thats sarcasm Ill just say this.. uranus and neptune -arent- cousins

now that I think about it, I know lots of anime/manga with shounen ai but I have barely come across mch shoujo ai...I dont know if its because Im so into yaoi that Ive been missing out on the otherside of the spectrum or whether its just not there. The only place Ive noticed heavy amounts of girlxgirl is hentai but ofcourse that isnt about the 'relationship'. Hmm..where do dick girls fall under?-cough cough-

Aaaaanyway, I dont see much anime/manga revolving around gay or lesbian relationships, but theres blatant refrences to it in -alot- of anime. I dont know how you could miss it. Since anime is really the only media I see from japan..I have no idea how accepted it is there

I myself am quite interested in Maria-sama ga Miteru. It looks very ambitious. I found the first episode to be quite portentous and dramatic ^_^ . I am also happy to see some classic presentation devices (like the title page) being brought back in the show, it's nice to see the link with what has gone before.

Here is a list of anime and manga titles for what is known as yuri/shoujoai (lesbian themes): http://www.yuricon.org/symg.htm

Note that these are titles mostly written by women; this is nothing to do with hentai or male fantasies or whatnot. I have read or watched as many of these titles as I could get my hands on and enjoyed most of them.

I would add Brigadoon to the list of anime tainted with shoujoai. Marin the main character and her best friend are very close.

Although this is not the manga forum I will mention to people who are eager for more yuri/shoujoai that there is a growing body of fan-translated manga now available. lililicious, which is 1/2 of the maria subbing team, is doing most of it.

Well for yuri there's Miyuki-chan In Wonderland, which a friend of mine unknowingly brought to a birthday-sleepover party... it's interesting, and pretty good because about a dozen not-necessarily-les girls watched it through to the end. :innocent: :D

and a good shonen-ai/yaoi manga and OVA is Fake  ... lots of violence in it as well - the main characters are NYC cops. There's also Angelic Layer (the main relationship is incest, but there are also male/male and possibly a female-likes-another-female relationships).

Oh, and I can't remember the name of the anime, but the main characters are Chihuaya and Kagetsuya (angels). The anime is only shounen-ai, but I've read that the manga is very different (something about liking your gender being outlawed because hardly anyong was reproducing in the race of Angels).
Ah! :heh: Duh,
It's called Earthian.

Maria-sama ga Miteru is NOT about lesbians! *sigh* I signed up for this forum to just say this. If you want to see Mari-Mite yuri stuff, go shuffle through some hentai doujinshi on Mari-Mite; the anime itself has nothing that even suggests anything dirty in it... it's more about everything clean and pure.

The characters in Mari-Mite develop strong bonds, but it's that of friends, classmates, and sisters. No girl in the anime tries to marry another girl or anything... if anywhere in Mari-Mite, girls gets intimately close, it's in "Ibara no Mori (Book 3 of Mari-Mite, the novel series)" which seems to have gotten skipped over.

And I would add a HELL YEA! to that!

Now Battle Athletes and Battle Athletes Victory has a very cute lesbian character who has a crush on the lead character but they end up as "just good friends" But (especially at the end of ep 2), they have a lot of fun with it.

The fact that there's nothing dirty in it doesn't mean there can't be any lesbian love. Yuri porn is something else than lesbianism.

And frankly, I do think some of the characters have feelings for each other that go beyond friendship. Rosa Gigantia and Canina even kissed for crying out loud, but of course they only did so because they are like sisters! According to your theory this would also mean every hetero couple in anime that did nothing more than kissing is not in love but are good friends unless they get down and dirty.

Sure.
