AIR: The Movie (http://key.visualarts.gr.jp/movie/air_movie.htm )
According to the site, it says that it's being released by TOEI in Fall of 2004.
Is this real or is it just some kind of a really, really, really sick April Fools joke?
To those that don't know, AIR is a bishoujo game (dating sim) from the makers of Kanon, and was voted the best game of 2000 and 2001 in Japan (yes, it's that damn good). It's widely considered by bishoujo game fans as one of the best, if not the best bishoujo game ever created.

I doubt it is a joke, that site has been around for a bit now.
It is most likely true since:
A. The rumor has been around Japanese otaku world for at least six month before on the info page MOON PHASE
B. The director Dezaki Osamu blurted out in his online diary on March 8th about the difficulty of drawing/reproducing something similar to Itaru-san's art sketch from "AIR"
C. If "Kanon" was done by Toei, it is assumable that "AIR" would be also from Toei, as written on the HP
D. A special column about this will be on the next issue of Newtype and/or Comptiq magazine.

ok I can't wait for this to come out and since many people like animes such as:
KGNE
Tsukihime
Kanon
This is created by the creators of Kanon. It is a dating sim released by KEY/ Visual Arts. As kj1980 will come here (no doubt) since he is so leet with dating sims :) So here we will post up to date info and such :)
* bows down to kj1980*
the official movie site is: http://www.air2004.com/ nothing yet tho ^-^"
I really almost despise anime based on h-games and dating sims, but I am interested in this for the sole reason that it is directed by Osamu Dezaki(Black Jack, Rose of Versailles, Brother, Dear Brother, Aim for the Ace!), so I will see how it turns out.

I like Black Jack :)
I hope you will enjoy it :)

What the?!!!! :twitch: You serious?! I didn't know Osamu Dezaki was still directing...You know I entered this thread with the sole purpose of bashing Air to bits as "not another crappy shallow boring dating sim" but now you've got me thinking...

Air rocked Kanon...and I liked Kanon a lot, too (the game, that is)!
I definitely look forward to Air and pray that they might weave all three arcs in a fluent way.
Can't wait for this, especially since it was previously announced to "begin" last summer (I thought it would be a TV series)
And by the way, Kanon is one of my favorite series...
So as to wait, I think I'm going to play Clannad...
I'm looking forward to this, also. Kanon is one of my favorite shows and I've liked all the anime based on ero-games that I've seen. I have no knowledge of the game, however. I hope a movie format can tell the story well enough and doesn't expect the viewer to be familiar with the characters and stories already from playing the game.

Where are anime producers supposed to get material for shounen romance series if not from "shallow dating sims?" I haven't seen any noteworthy shounen romance manga lately, to say the least.

Well bishoujo game-to-anime conversions have a justified reputation of being shallow wish fulfullment and fanservice-y muck with spineless stereotypical girls catering to/competing for a faceless male protagonist. I don't know if its because I'm not a guy or what, but I like very few shonen romance. (Even if its not based on a game.) It takes a lot for any former video game anime to break that image for me. A lot. Osamu Dezaki is "a lot".
I haven't played the game (must be obvious right?) but I know its the most popular bishoujo game ever so I flipped through an Air artbook out of curiosity once. It was non-descript and not enough to catch me then, but I'm willing to give Air a chance now.
Can someone give me a non-spoiler summary of the game? (If that's possible given the different story paths.)
Wow..It was only a matter of time since there has been a trend of producting anime based off ero-games.....Can't wait ^_^ (patiently waiting for Wind -a breath of heart-)
wish fulfullment and fanservice
That's what makes it romantic.
Main Entry: 1ro·man·tic
Pronunciation: rO-'man-tik, r&-
Function: adjective
Etymology: French romantique, from obsolete romant romance, from Old French romans
1 : consisting of or resembling a romance
2 : having no basis in fact : IMAGINARY
3 : impractical in conception or plan : VISIONARY
4 a : marked by the imaginative or emotional appeal of what is heroic, adventurous, remote, mysterious, or idealized
These games are written for guys. That's why it's aways some looser male character with girls all over him to choose from. It's the fantasy of the target audience. The guy probably seems faceless because he is. It's supposed to be the person playing the game. You make the decisions based on what you would do.
As a guy, I get easily attached to the girls portraid (I usually think the guy is an idiot) and I find the games (the one I've actually played) and shows quite emotional.
And, come on, there is no fanservice in the Kanon series. :)

"Shallow wish fulfillment" is a vague negative definition which can be applied to any romance including shoujo titles - which merely stick a cute face on the spineless female character. And all this boils down to is that you generally dislike this kind of thing, without naming any exceptions.

The reason AIR did so well was that its story was spectacular and the music excellent. It wasn't your run of the mill "dating sim." You meet many characters, who aren't all falling head over heels for you, and you even go thru weird moments like a nice trip back to the past ;)
What I'm worried about is how they will manage to fit the entire storyline into a regular length feature. Maybe if they only follow one path and only for the first third of the game :/

TronDD, I agree that your definition is what these shows are like. That's what I don't like about them, but its the reason fans do like them. I can stomach these types of shows, even rank them among my all-time favorites, if I can like the characters and not just the ones of the opposite sex of the viewer. If the execution of these scenarios are really well done, I enjoy it. Its just rare that I see a scene or a situation in these shows that I find entertaining or touching or not contrived. Its all fantasy, but if it didn't have some realism in character and situation nobody would like it, even you guys.
"Justified" you say, but I don't see how. Few game adaptations have much fanservice. It does apply to shoujo romance titles. I hate shallow shoujo romance too, especially when there's the "oh-save-me-bishounen" complex going on, but that's a whole 'nother rant.
The series I enjoy that have romance in them are not purely romance anime. There's more going on in the series that attracts me and they feature more than one character that I like. I mean series like Princess Tutu, Fruits Basket (both shoujo not shonen I know), Saikano (the horrors of war aspect drew me), Video Girl Ai (that was for guys and I liked that one), and Rizelmine (i liked the humour and it didn't take itself seriously).
And few game adaptations have fanservice? Kanon is the only one I can think that doesn't. And Sakura Wars, though it had its moments. (Tsukihime I'll put in the "I don't know" category. But the artbook I saw sure as heck had fanservice...) The rest have nudity, sex scenes, or panty shots. I can't remember which came from games and which not, but all these shonen romance series have fanservice: Lime Iro-Senkitan (game), Green Green, KimiNozo (game), Canvas, UFO Princess Valkerie, Popotan, Onegai Twins, Onegai Teacher, Love Hina, Rizelmine, Hanaukyo Maids, the upcoming My Hime. Even Ghibli's only shounen romance (and weakest work) "I Can Hear the Sea" had some fanservice, albeit not much. This is where it gets the reputation of being shallow fanservice material catering to males. The real gems of the genre, if there are any, get drowned in the crap.
Now can someone please give me a plot summary of Air? I'm genuinely interested to know what its about. I'd like to see if its anything like the romance stories I do like. I'm not asking just so I can say how stupid the story is. I want to know what's its about and why its so popular because it sounds like it could have potential.

Read this for a brief plot summary of AIR.
AIR Plot Summary/Review (http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/dreamcast/review/R29417.html)
Note: Don't think that's all there is to AIR. That summary doesn't even begin to scratch the surface of the story.
There's a reason why this game was voted as Game of the Year two years in a row.
What I'm worried about is how they will manage to fit the entire storyline into a regular length feature. Maybe if they only follow one path and only for the first third of the game :/
According to rumors, I think they are making the movie based on Misuzu's story only, and it will be about 2hrs long.

Thanks for the summary link, though I'm a little confused. (Probably because the reviewer didn't want to give any spoilers.) The story sounds complicated. A good start I suppose.
basically
The story is about a guy who can control a doll and is looking for a girl... Thats all I can say without spoiling anything...

AIR was re-released for the DC with all the hentai scenes removed, and this version was reported back to the PC (with voices, new scenes, etc). According to kj, it's extremely hard to find the hentai version of Kanon/AIR anymore in Japan.

Yeah it was also the same for Kanon and both have also a PS2 version (for all-age, of course) but many hgames had a console version (maybe due to the success but I'm not sure of that) such as Green Green, Da Capo, Kiminozo, Pia Carrot, Canvas etc.

Here's what actually happened when I played through Kanon the first time (note this was after I watched the anime):
*at the scene where Ayu is in Yuuichi's room*
Me: Okay, now they're getting to the part where they find out what really happened and get all sad.
*Yuuichi gropes Ayu*
Me: But-wha-but-wha-What the hell!? Yuuichi, you're not-no-Ayu-ARGH MY EYES!!!
That's when I realised I have the hentai version, not the all-age version.

WTF!!!! Minagi is not that kinda girl!!!!!!!!!! WTF!!!!!!!!!Damn You Key!!!!!!
I like how they add pictures to replace the unnecessary h pics which are removed in the all gae version(like the cat picture on the DC version of Kanon)
I think I'll take my violin and go on a journey to look for that girl in pain (sigh)

I've played AIR, definately a better game than Kanon. But I thought while Kanon is more towards a romantic date simulation, AIR is more about a... family love, ties between a mother and a child, what one will teach to the next generaton, kind of thing. Also it was a very tragic. Just recalling what happens makes my chest hurt. ;-;
I wonder if Midorikawa Hikaru will voice Yukito again like the All age version. He's got to be one of the funniest/coolest love adventure game main character ever! >.<

OH! Thats super good news. Can't play the game, so next best thing is watch the anime :). It says 2004 on the site, so would this start showing in fall?
I have been maintaining a page that's been following developments on the TV, Comics and Movie.
http://www.cjas.org/~zalas/AIR/
Basically, a bunch of us have been working on doing some minor translations and doing some research so we'd be prepared when the shows actually come out. In short, the TV series' 1st episode will be shown at TBS's anime festival Sept 4-5. As for the rest of the episodes, we don't know an exact date. Moonphase lists it as 2005, but it may very well start airing in fall 2004 if they have the first episode ready. The movie will be showing sometime in 2004, and is ~91 minutes long. The comics will be coming out in Comptiq starting in their September issue which comes out in August.
EDIT: darn it, something's funny with the site ~_~
EDIT2: fixed

Well, the game AIR certainly is very good. However, the director (or was it the screenwriter) did say that it was kind of hard to fit all the emotion, feel and story into a 90 minute movie. Looks like the movie will probably be an abridged version of the Dream(Misuzu)->Summer->AIR storyline, whereas the TV series will probably explore everyone a bit more.

I haven't actually watched KGNE, but considering what I've heard about it, the AIR TV has to be done fairly well, and somehow incorporate all three plots. One plot might not be enough, except for maybe Minagi or something.
EDIT:
Looks like commercials for the theatrical release will start airing August 10 and an interview with the TV series staff will be shown on a BS-i TV show on August 12. Look forward to subbed versions of these ( hopefully ^^; )

Actually KGNE is a bit higher on the sales against AIR, as AIR hasn't had the support of Age's marketing push teams, but AIR is still an excellent story and I'm waiting for the anime to be completed.
As long as they stick fairly close to the feel of the game, I will enjoy it just as I did with KGNE.

To tell you the truth I hope he isn't directing. I'd much rather see him go on to direct something else (like the new Black Jack series). He just doesn't seem to be suited bishoujo game to anime conversions.

The plot might be almost the same as Kanon :) and short as 13 episodesFrom what I understand (and someone who has played the game should correct me), the Air game is a fair bit longer than Kanon, so perhaps there might be hope for a 26-episode series? I don't know... I just find 13-episode series to be a bit too short - just when you get to know and like the characters, it's already over. Needless to say, though, I'd prefer 13 excellent episodes to 26 drawn-out or mediocre ones.
Anyway, I'm looking for to Air, and here's to hoping that it will enjoy a good and succesful run.

AIR's story, from what I remember, is not too much longer than Kanon's overall game plot, however they do have extensive character building that goes deeper than Kanon's. This might increase the episode count if they plan on continuing the idea of building the characters in filler episodes, but I don't know.
I expect it to not be much longer than Kanon since they'll probably want to keep a close-knit feel on the story.
I'd prefer a 13 ep series like Kanon over a 26 ep series like Da Capo. I'd rather they keep the drama up and forgot the fluff. Of course, the ideal scenario would be 26 solid episodes.

I think it takes the average Japanese gamer about 40 something hours to beat this game, and that's including about 16 hours of overlapping plot. If they just stick to Misuzu -> Summer -> AIR, a 13 episode series would barely be able to contain everything, but a 26 episode series may be a bit too long. Having not played the game version of Kanon all the way through, I can't really compare the two though :/ I'm reaaaaally interested in how they implement the last third of AIR, since it's uh... from the point of view of a bird >.>
What *would* be interesting would be is one of two things:
1) The movie covers Misuzu's scenario + Dream + AIR, the TV series covers say Minagi's scenario and the Comics cover Kano's scenario
or
2) The TV series is divided into three parts for the first third, and they attempt to illustrate all three girls' scenarios as alternate realities
I doubt it, but I guess we'll find out in 4 days ^^;

Sorry for double posting, but I wasn't sure exactly how to bump the thread without posting again ^^;
Anyways, according to Moonphase (who read Comptiq), the TV show will be 12 episodes, so it doesn't look like they have a lot of room to do things. I hope it pulls off well :)

basically a 3rd season of FMP is pretty much official, but there's no official dates on when it will start to air yet. Also don't expect the whole thing end with season 3, since the novels are still ongoing and very popular in Japan (I heard the novels are actually much more popular than the anime series...)
And Fumoffu is imo super fantastic! Especially if you like the comedical side of the original FMP. I can't stop watching it again and again!

The 1300yen I believe just comes with a poster.
The 2500yen comes with a DVD in a Jewel case. They're the same DVDs except for the cover art. One is Misuzu in a yukata and one is Misuzu in her pajamas.
The 3000yen version comes with a DVD in a 3 disc digipak. The cover art is Misuzu in her school uniform.
The DVD comes with 2 TV commercials (maybe just the standard Kansai-Tori no Uta and the Kantou-Aozora one), interview with the main seiyuu and a Promo.
I have about 8 different captures of the TV commercials, but only subbed two (since there's only 2 actual sets of video footage)
According to 2ch, it seems there may be 10
So far, there's:
1. Kansai(Osaka) with Yukito narration and Tori no Uta
2. Kantou(Tokyo) with Misuzu narration and Aozora
3. Chiisana Te no Hira with Yukito and Kansai
4. Chiisana Te no Hira with Misuzu and Kantou
5. Farewell Song with Yukito and Kansai
6. Farewell Song with Misuzu and Kantou
7. Natsukage with Yukito and Kansai
8. Natsukage with Misuzu and Kantou
2ch seems to indicate that there may be commercials with no narration, but I have not been able to find a capture for this.

I liked AIR a lot. Misuzu's scenario to be exact.
I thought the Kanon game was OK, but the TV series was awfully mediocre.
Clannad was sadly, a dissapointment. :frustrated: :frustrated: :frustrated:
ok first off any one seen the promo vids for the movie?
am i the only one who thinks it will be freakin awesome?
cuz it does look sugoi!

I agree the movie does look awesome.
The series looks very beautiful too. It is hards to turn Key's CG images into animation form. They have done a better job this time around than with kanon. If you compare the both anime styles with the games, you can see AIR is much closer. The girls don't look ten 0_o they look their age of 16-17. They aren't suppost to be 20....

KGNE
Tsukihime
Kanon
This is created by the creators of Kanon. It is a dating sim released by KEY/ Visual Arts. As kj1980 will come here (no doubt) since he is so leet with dating sims :) So here we will post up to date info and such :)

I highly doubty they will cut out parts like kanon. Since they are making a movie to go with the TV series. Kanon the animation wasn't all that bad. I mean Sister Princess is bad for what the game is.
But Tsukihime was not that great at all. Maybe if the do fate/stay night they will do a better job.

Maybe it's because I never played the game, but I think the Kanon anime is fantastic. I know people complain that most of the girl's stories are cut, but when you think about it, they can't really put in more than one girl's complete story. When you play through these types of games, you only get one girl's story, too. What they need to do is make a seperate series for each one. Or they need to just translate the damn game. :)

I cant imagine this on a PS2 game store, a shelf full of dating Sim games or hentai games for PS2 or PC. I wonder if the american public would dear to buy that ??..I guess they would !!! :) Girls also have to be more cautious on the public transportation too, just like Japan ^_- more pervs on the streets ..thanks to the Japs culture PC hentai sims, and too many airheads living in a lolipop wonderland ..dating your fav character on your PS2 hehehe:heh:

It's not really that they cut out the other girls' story that makes you pissed off, but they cut out the essential themes / scenes of the heroine when most Bishoujo games are animated.
And all these animes have to somehow include / fit every character introduced in the story and intermigle them here and there.
That makes for a piss poor plot with nightmarish experiences.
Imagine classic tragedy without the element of hubris, vengeance, hatred and inherent nature of mankind to sin. That's what the animated series of Tsukihime and Kanon were.
Don't even let me begin with the OVAs.
The only animated series that faithfully shows the game's essence was Kimi ga Nozomu Ein.
Well heres' my take on this:
Da Capo, Kanon, Tsukihime, and KGNE were very great animes, seeing how they were at least 13 episodes
If AIR is 13+ episodes, then it would be great too.
But OAV's...ughhhhhhhh The only two that didn't suck a load of @$$ was Mizuiro 2003 and Natsuiro no Sunadeki. Almost all other OAvs sucked

Are you tyring to say those animes were great because they had at least 13 episodes?
If so, you've just won the award for the dumbest person on the forum.
That's like saying DBZ the anime was great because it had at least gazillion episodes without any sense of action and the excitment that the manga provided.
KGNE was good because it faithfully conveyed the characters' emotions with superior art direction / acting. Not because it had 13 episodes.

I'm going to say that I'll only judge the show/movie after I see it because it's as pointless as groping in the dark to make assumptions just based on how long it is.
For a game like Kanon, I felt the anime did a fairly good job at compressing the huge and complex story down to the size it was, but others feel differently.
I don't think Maceart's comment about 13 episodes means that if a show runs under that it isn't good, I thnk it just means that it'd be hard to compress AIR's story in a package much smaller than 13 episodes. I can easily say that that might be indeed true but I will hold judgement till after I watch myself.
I've not been disappointed with most of the ero->anime conversions as of late as they've done a lot to keep faithful to the story.
I believe the September issue of Comptiq stated that the AIR TV series will be 12 episodes.

you despise kanon :( Kanon is awesome.
I like Black Jack :)
I hope you will enjoy it :)
Black Jack is awesome, its one of the first animes i ever saw.
I guess ignorance is bliss. I don't know what the anime adaptations lack from the game so I can't be disappointed by that. :) And, in my opinion, judging them on their own merits, the animes are usually very good.
As far as OVAs go, far too short. I think Mizuiro and Canvas were pretty good. Haven't watched all of Natsuiro no Sunadeki yet because I'm playing the game first. (It'll be the first ero->anime where I'll actually be able to play the game and see the anime)

They translated the game Natsuiro no Sunadeki? Wow I'm behind lol ( or am I confused?)
Well I know that KGNE's story is not as complex as most of the dating sims. It was so un fantasy like that it was so easy. The story wasn't anything too hard to convert at all.
The WORST OVA's were ONE holy CRAP did they do a bad job. Not only is the person like WTF the gamers were like WTF. One was Key's "first work" ( when they were tactics) and was popular at the time.
I believe 5 more days until AIR....airs in Japan ehehe.

I think they are saying that for a dating sim of less than 13 episodes such as an OVA, is not good. Since they do not explain in depth of the true story like the game since it is so damn short.
Like ONE it didn't make any sense ithad 4 OVA's if it was a 13 episode series it may have been better.
DBZ isn't a dating sim..... LOL ahahaha

As a general rule, game to animation conversions usually suck because they try to shove all the storylines down our throats at the same time.
The Air movie seems to focus only on Misuzu and Kanna so that's a relief.
You can't say the same for the tv series though...

I guess that's why both the Series Compositor and the Director for the TV series were both very nervous while working on this, hoping not to run counter to the image that everyone had of the game ^^;
When I first watched that awesome trailer, I was like
" I get to watch 13-26 episodes of this godliness!? Heaven, here I come!!!!"
But then I realized it's only a 90-minute movie, and went *kablonk*
But I hope both the TV and movie will turn out right. I only wish they used the movie art style for the TV also. It looks great.

The game was great as it was. We can only hope that the director won't deviate too much from the original.
As for the art styles, that's not possible probably because of funding constraints.

Wow, that Prelude video rocked my world. Misuzu forevah!
I just took a look at the latest AIR Movie TV commercial and I have to say that the characters look too dark/shaded or at least they look darker than the TV series. I think I prefer the TV series' character designs more, but the movie may just be designed that way to give a more serious vibe. Will be interesting if the differences are similar to the differences between the Escaflowne movie and TV series (sans huge character design difference and Pinocchio syndrome)

tho theres already a thread about air in the general anime forum Air: Movie/TV thread (http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?t=12476) since it has yet to be fansubbed. but hey its going to be subbed most likely. its similar to Kanon.

I just saw the preview of Air. It looks like a harem show. Is it any good?
I've played the game, and it's not really a harem at all in the guy chasing after many girls sense. There is an overabundance of the female sex, because of its genre. Whether it is "good" or not depends on your preferences for anime and also how well the directors pull it off.

The TV show starts airing in Japan at Jan 6, 2005 at 24:30 (Jan 7, 2005 12:30am)
The movie starts showing February 5, 2005. I haven't actually seen KGNE, but from I've heard, KGNE seems to have a lot of relationship drama, whereas AIR, the game at least, does not have as much drama. There's less of a focus on romantic love relationships than usual games of its genre. AIR will most likely be closer in style to Kanon, though the TV series shouldn't be as diluted as the Kanon TV series, because Kanon originally had 5 paths in the game version, whereas AIR only has 3 paths (and I'm guessing they're going to concentrate on the main path).
MakubeX2
2004-12-26, 09:46
AIR does not focus on the romance aspect on relationships alone. The scenarior focus on other apsects such as paternal & maternal, master & servents and siblings.
Kanon will not be an appropiate comparison since it covers just romance alone.
AIR is deeper then Kanon when it comes to the subject of relationships.

Ditto here :)
One of the most anticipated series for me in a very very long time.

I was wondering, what is Air TV mainly about? Does it have deep drama like Shuffle! and Kimi ga Nozomu Eien?

For the TV series similarity to the movie, yes and no. The climatic scene with Mizusu is of course the same, but other than that, it is more different than similar. I prefered the TV series more than the movie. Watching the series first since t's longer helps immense yourself inthe show more than if you did the movie first since you already know the ending then.

Well it's not a typical romance harem/love triangles like SHUFFLE, as for KNGE level drama, it definitely has a lot of that (at the end). All I can tell you is that this is not a happy series in terms of the plot itself but the relations between people will be shown to be important and even override the sadness of the events themselves. There is some romance and a main male lead but it's not the single most important theme of the show. The show definitely has an overall "mood or feel" and also a strong mythological/spiritual background as well.
As I'm obviously a fan of the show my reply is probably biased. Overall I liked AIR TV for my own reasons that may be different from others here. The best way is to just watch 2 or 3 eps and see if you like it or not.

2. Yes
3. It couldn't be prevented, there would always be dreams. She was able to fulfill her summer feeling like a real daughter to Haruka. That was her goal that summer. She wanted a friend, and she achieved it (her mother).
4. She was cursed never being able to sleep. She would restlessly fly the sky and Misuzu had those dreams constantly that made her back ache.

4. why was kana cursed in the first plave and what exactly did it do i understood it a little bit but fully
1. I think it was (but it actually doesn't say if it is or not ). But in the game I believe it was more evident and in the anime some characters said too much.
2-4 Are pretty decent answers ^-^
It's the same thing, just subbed by two different groups which are, as you probably already guessed, Triad and EnA (Eien no Anime).
okay :)
i got the triads version now :D
i finally got around to watching all of Air and finished i like it and it made me tear up at the end that never happens but i have a few questions if someone is willing to answer
1. Was the curse lifted
2 Misuzu is the rencarnation of kana right?
3. why did she still die at the end even she did all the things she wanted to
4. why was kana cursed in the first plave and what exactly did it do i understood it a little bit but fully
1 - Well, there were two curses: one cast by the monks and one passed down from Kanna's mother. The first curse wore off by itself, and the second curse was apparently undone by Yukito. You can tell that the second curse was undone because Haruko got close to Misuzu but wasn't tortured (see 4).
2 - She's a partial reincarnation of Kanna. Kanna's soul is too massive for a human vessel to take, so it can only partially reincarnate before the vessel dies. See 3.
3 - The soul of a winged-being (Yokujin) is too large for a human vessel to take. Eventually, it breaks down and the reincarnation dies. Misuzu gaining a mother-daughter relationship and reaching the goal just helped heal Kanna's tortured soul; it wasn't going to save her. If I understand it correctly, all the reincarnations are probably going to die young, but at least future reincarnations can be happy.
4 - Kanna's mother passed down a curse which I think was gotten from the people she killed. In addition, Kanna was cursed as a part of an effort by a Japanese faction to eliminate the Yokujin and to unify Japan under one God. The curse from Kanna's mother "tortures and kills those which get close to the Yokujin" (hence the sword blow given to Yukito and why he wanted to leave). The other curse tortures Kanna by giving her sad dreams (e.g. one of Ryuuya's death. And, I think, the curse might have taken away her happy memories, too).
I'm verrryyyy late with this comment, but I must say it anyway: I really like this show. :)
One other thing though, aside from the story and characters, is there anyone else out there besides me who just generally likes the warm summer feel throughout the anime?
I watched episodes 1-13 for the first time today, although I have not seen the two summer specials. Honestly, this is by far the most touching thing I've ever seen in my life.

of course, I'm one :) Eevrything is always more lively and relaxing in summer, especially in a seaside town like in the anime. Interestingly Kanon, Key's other game made anime is set in winter.

Glad you liked it. Well you've seen the bulk of the show and drama, the summer specials are much more comedic and slice of life in nature.
I find it strange that Key/Visual Arts airs their anime in the winter, with AIR set in the summer. Watching AIR when it's freezing outside just didn't really feel right. Then again, Kanon also aired in the winter, making the setting correct.
I didn't even know about AIR at all until I ran out of good animes last August and tried it, so I watched AIR during the summer. Good timing^^

I watched the dream arc when it was aired and finished the AIR arc during winter. The irony is that I watched it in Vancouver B.C where in december the rain just poured out of the sky as if there's no end in sight, which ironically fits the way how the story goes during that last arc. I remember crying when I finished ep12 during 1 midnight and when it's over and when I got upstairs, I find the rain stopped and an absolutely glorious daylight shining through the window... making me cry some more.
I was immensely helped by a translated version of the game script that I found online during the winter and it made the AIR arc all the more painful for me to swallow. I actually turned off the video and instead listened in on the beach scene in ep.11 since it got to me too much.

Hm... after seeing all episodes I don't know what to think about it. On the one side it was very philosophic but on the other side I thought that the whole background was unfitting.
The part where Ryuuyu and Uraha made a child JUST to make it continue their search was imo dumb. They force their very own wishes and dreams upon that child and make the whole bloodline searching for it. Isn't it the very own life of the childs? Why do they have to carry out the duty of some ancestors? Why do they "produce" a child just to search Kanna?

That was just the only way to help out Kanna. Yukito or the ones previous to him could have just said "No." but its what they believed in - it was there fate.
And to some extent, all parents project their dreams and wishes upon their children. But I've never actually encountered someone who was forced to go with said wishes when they were sufficiently autonomous to make up their own minds.
It's similar here - Uraha and Ryuuha might hope and intend for their children (and descendents, a lá Yukito) to continue the quest to free Kanna... but the choice is, ultimately, theirs.
-Andiyar
Didn't Yukito's mom tell him that? That there's a winged girl trapped somewhere and only they can help her, but it is his(Yukito) choice whether to find and help the girl or to live his own life.
Well, it's been a while since I watched AIR for the third time... but yes, at the start of episode 7 if I'm remembering correctly ^_^

& you have to think, Yukito probably isn't just doing this because his Mother asked him too, its also to find out just who he is, his purpose in life - and how Yukito ending up, i believe he found himself.
I've seen the movie. I see that it has a different storyline from the series. I love the character designs. Kinda better than the series because the characters look a little kiddy-ish compare to the movie. Also, it seems that the movie emphasize more on the romance area huh?

just watched the series and i have to say that it broke my heart :(
why did things have to turn out the way they did? >.< its just basically a sad ending...however there is a glimpse of hope that yukito (as sora) will save misuzu!! i guess there isnt gona be a 2nd season of this? :( a happy ending would be nice...(2nd anime to make me weep a bit...)

Happy endings can't always be good. Air had a very sad ending but it was a great ending compared to many other anime. A 2nd season is out of the question because we don't want a 2nd evangelion again (chances that sequels always screw up the whole story is very high).
That's why i always beleive that things should be as perfect as they are

This is off topic but since there are a bunch of AIR fans around, you may want to stop by the autumn Animesuki banner contest page and vote for Minoto's Misuzu banner. It would be great to see one up^^

Yay! KickAssAnime is fansubbing Air TV and it seems so far like they're doing a very good job...as expected.

2006-08-17, 20:19
Well I have to ask.... why? It's already been fansubbed by at least 3 groups, all of whom did a very good job of it (esp. Koi IMHO). Unless someone is doing a radical new translation, or giant subtitles for ipod viewers with tiny screens or something, it's hard to see the point.
Incidentally for those struggling to find Air TV/specials/movie, all but the movie can be direct downloaded from http://anime.fansub.tv/series.php/468/Air/ (they only have torrent links for the movie) there's also vidcaps for all the episodes.
KAA is using DVD raws in x.264 with soft subs. Trust me, the video quality is gorgeous compared to the TV versions of AIR that were out last year. Oh, and the translation is (ahem, perhaps suspiciously?) almost identical to Koi's... so a great translation and gorgeous video/audio.
That's why. ^_^

Actually Koi's translation isn't that good. I found Triads translation much better since they've been translating the sentences instead of Koi's translating the main ideas with alot of editting (which IMHO loses the flavor of the anime). I just hope KAA doesn't make the same mistake as Koi.
Hmmm.....4th subbed version of AIR sounds nice to my collection >.>;

I ended up getting a script of the game dialogues because koi wasn't doing it sentence by sentence. Actually I remember by AIR arc I turned the video off and instead listened while I had the script with me and I was a wreck throughout the whole thing. Turning the video back on afterward that and simply listen in was all the more powerful because of it.
Heh, thats a pretty good idea.
Its just like playing the game with your eyes closed, and imagining the anime. ^^;

Koi's files were much smaller though for similar technical quality. I was on dialup at the time and the difference between downloading Koi and Triad was about 4 hours.

^ I personally prefer quality over size, i don't mind having a folder named "Air" with a size of 8+ GB on my harddisk >.>;
I went for Triad's because they did the Summer Special as well and theire releases are usually of very high quality. But once KAA is done, then I'll probably go for their version.
I downloaded subs of the series for each group^^
I have watched a different sub version for every time I've rewatched the series. Already did Koi, Lunar and Ishin's. Planning on doing a run with Triad before summer ends.
Koi's was great, but I also liked Ishin as well (especially since I also enjoyed their sub of the first Kanon).
Hm. Well, when Air was actually 'airing' I remember watching episodes of the show by Koi, Ishin, Lunar and the Triad. Out of those, Lunar was the hardest to watch, followed by the Triad - I just don't like the English that they used. Mind you, it has been a while - and I ended up getting the Summer Specials by the Triad for reason of expediency.
Koi provided for me the best balance of a very readable English sub, with hyper fast translation and quite decent quality. If I wanted more detail or clarity on any issue, I had but to hit this forum, which was, back in the day, absolutely huge. I very rarely needed too though. :)

I agree that Lunar were hardest to watch, I didn't like their (admittedly innovative) style of breaking subtitles into phrases, sticking up half a line of subs and then adding the other half line a couple of seconds later. Because of this I only watched one of their episodes then went back to Koi.
Hi,
Does anyone know where I can download the Air Movie by Koi. It appears that it is not in one of the batch releases. It is not on the tracker site as well. I think they released 2 versions, one in xvid and the other h264.
Any help would be great.
Thanks!!
I found a torrent but I'm not sure if I should post the site on this forum, so I'll pm it to you, but I'm not sure if it works, as sometimes torrents that appear active on the website turn out to be dead.
Could it be that the curse that Yukito broke was also what was making Kanna reincarnate? If so, that means that the cycle is finally broken and Kanna is free right? If that's not it than it would seem the only point to the show was to show that Misuzu's happy memories have somewhat lessened Kanna's sadness...but even if that is the case, Kanna is still doomed.
bah... not like it matters. Misuzu was lightyears better than Kanna. I could care less what happens to Kanna. I want Misuzu back!!!:(

If you have some time, you can dig into the Air Q&A forum (http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?t=26310)
Yes the curse is what caused Misuzu to die. But there is bittersweet part to it, which is "by giving misuzu happy memories with her mother, she took those memories to Kanna" by that the curse should have been broken and Kanna was reincarnated back as the little girl who was walking on the seaside at the end of the show. Or that's my conclusion of watching the show a few times and digging into these forums.

Anyway, like Kanon, I want to understand the story deeper by reading the actual game script. Some of you guys here have mentioned that you have the actual translated game script. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I tried Google and GFaqs, the latter has one but it's still far from completion.

Nope. :( I guess the English version is simply not available then.
I guess I would play the game with a text hooker as my last resort. Frankly, I never tried this method before so does it work well, like is the translation using Atlas or any other program understandable? I never tried importing an H-game before too so can anyone here point me in the right direction?

I made a horrible mistake when I was replaying to SealedTears and Ziv's questions. I rewatched the series again in an analytical view and realized that Kanna has 2 curses. Curse1 causing her to reincarnate and Curse2 causing anyone getting closer to her to die. She got Curse1 from the monks while Curse2 was gained from her mother. I mistook Uraha's explenation for the curses. Or maybe, just maybe, the 2 curses have merged and are having the same effect on Kanna. It's all up to the viewer to decide which is which.
I apologize for the confusion I caused, exams were playing tricks on my mind.

Somehow, I just preferred the movie to the series. Like, in each and every single way possible. I thought its story, though slightly altered, was much more concise and well-done in an overall fashion.
The series was really brought down by the same thing that all dating sim adaptations seem to go through; the arc dropping syndrome, where the character pretty much just gets written off as soon as her part of the story ends (even KyoAni's Kanon, which tries to get away from that, still can't seem to fully escape from).
Also, there's the fact that the story resets two-thirds in, with things now seen in the crow's (Yukito's) perspective.
And the whole amnesia business. What the hell? That was just unnecessary.
And there was also that atrociously corny speech by Haruka (to a crow) in the final episode.
The movie just cut all that crap and got straight to the point. Plus, it had a nice romantic theme to it. Okay, so it was not exactly loyal to the source material like the series, but it certainly captures the overall mood of AIR successfully.
It depends on how you define "the mood of AIR". If you look at it as standalone, sure, the movie may or may not be a better telling of the story. Since the mood of AIR is ultimately set by the game, the series does a better job relaying the overall feel.
Rengemaru

And keep in mind that the series wasn't THAT faithful to the game itself. Alot of scenes and events from the game was omitted and some of them were even summarized. That's why 15 episodes (including summer specials) were not enough to fully express the story.

After all the hype I heard about this series, I was very disappointed when I finished it the other day. The animation was BEAUTIFUL, the music was wonderful, the plot COULD HAVE BEEN awesome (I liked the concept), but the writing and the characters were awful, unrelatable, and FLAT FLAT FLAT!
No I'm not trying to disrespect Air fans or be rude, I'm posting because I'm disappointed, I feel like I got cheated. Kanna was easier for me to relate to than Misuzu and even her death wasn't that sad - all the females were typical H-game cardboard females... I know this was an H-game beforehand and while it was well-written for an H-game, I think it should have had the bar raised much higher before it became an anime. I feel like the music and lovely animation were wasted on this series, and that someone with a more capable writing staff should throw the H-game aspect of it out the window, and rewrite the whole thing over again with more realistic or at least relatable characters, instead of cardboard H-game barbie dolls...
Phew OK I'm done venting now. Like I said, I just felt cheated with this series, it had such potential...like, I want my time back cheated.

I suppose this is just one of those things that depends on one's range of experience. I've known a few Misuzus over the years -- girls back in my school days, women now, who may not have been bearing the burden of a thousand-year-old curse, but who were nevertheless horribly broken inside as the result of events in their past. I see them in her every time I watch this series, and I see my own failure to understand and my complete inability to help them in Yukito. I can even see some of myself in her...my family moved around a lot when I was young, and I never went to the same school two years in a row until sixth grade, so I started out every year as the weird new kid who didn't know anybody or have any friends. As I said, it's a matter of personal experience, but I'd hardly call her a flat or unsympathetic character.
Likewise for the other characters...are they happy, normal, fully-rounded human beings? Of course not. But can they serve as archetypes expressing some of the different types of brokenness that can exist in people in the real world? Absolutely.
harukamae
2007-03-18, 19:44
I see what you're saying, but I guess what I meant is most people who have tough lives/are broken (that I know) don't really act like Misuzu, especially acting five years below their age - I felt Misuzu was too childish to be a reasonable character, but I've been reading about something called Moe (which I hadn't heard of before) and that may explain Misuzu and many of the females in this series. Like I said, it's just how I felt, I didn't find Misuzu believable, but this is my first anime based on an ero-game, so these may be archetypes I'm unfamiliar with. Thanks for giving your opinion - I wanted a response to see what it is people see in the Air characters.
Well, certainly not everyone responds to trauma that way, but some (speaking from personal experience) do.
Here's something else to consider, from within the story itself:
Remember that Misuzu is a partial / failed reincarnation of Kanna, who (despite her appearance and position) was still very much a child by the standards of winged beings during the events of the Summer arc. It's not unreasonable for Misuzu's nature to reflect that.
That was one of the things that made me like this series so much...even though I spent most of my first viewing just barely understanding what was going on, by the end, it provided a reason and explanation (a very supernatural one, but then, it's obvious fairly early on that there's more involved than just everyday reality) for all the mysteries it presented earlier. The second time I watched it, I caught so many little moments that had just made me go "huh?" the first time, and realized what they meant and how they foreshadowed future events...it was almost like a different show.
I'm currently in the process of playing the game and wow, it's pretty massive. You have a tough job, KyoAni, to summarize the whole game into 13 episodes and you still managed to deliver. Kudos to you! Though you would have done better if episode 13 wasn't a stupid recap... I still can't forgive you for that.
The thought of a more faithful adaptation done in 24 episodes still haunts me to this very day. :( AIR feels more poignant to me personally compared to the new Kanon so I would love to see that.
I was wondering if anyone who's familiar with plot and literature could comment on AIR's plot structure. I found it quite unique and non-standard. It has tons of sub-plots, and lots of plot twists, however, the most unique things were its retelling of the Dream Arc story, which effectively rewrites it as you're going along, and how it tells you the backstory in the middle, which ends up carrying over into the Air Arc. Since the Summer Arc is being resolved in the Air Arc, that effectively means that you have both the Air Arc's plot and the Summer Arc's plot going on at the same time. What makes this even better is that each plot development has a different meaning depending on whether you take it from the context of the Summer Arc plot or the Air Arc plot! So, by the end you have a plot going on on 3 different levels.
1. on the level of the Dream Arc's plot, which is now being resolved,
2. on the level of the Air Arc, where Sora's perspective adds a very satisfying "everything fits together!" feeling, and completely rearranges the Dream Arc's plot structure with its new information.
3. on the level of the Summer Arc plot, which is being resolved in tandem with the Air Arc, and whose conclusion contrasts with the Air Arc's conclusion.
Anyone else have any info?
Yeah the multiple story thing sort of reminded me of The Fountain (if anyone has seen that...a very touching film). IMO it was definitely one of the better of the shorter anime/mangas. Normally I can't stand anything unless it has a fairly high episode count, since that normally entails plot and character development. But after watching the first couple episodes I was definitely impressed and enjoyed the series a lot. I, as well, could see the lead female in a lot of the people I've known in life. The perspective made it for me though, I'm probably going to just go out and buy it to add to the collection whenever I get the money.

Omgosh! ^ ^ You too! I watched AIR Summer; AIR TV (Anime series) and AIR (the movie). Rewatching AIR (anime series)...----everything suddenly made more sense! ^ ^

I'm rewatching it =D I'm falling in love with AIR all over again.
Last year, I made a point of re-watching it over the last few days of summer...it just felt right, somehow. I'll be doing the same again this year.

I've probably re-watched it about 5 times. I never get bored of it.

I gotta watch them again once my sadness over the ending disappears lol
