I've been watching this anime Fruits Basket, which is barely heard of. I'd just like to recommend it to anyone looking for a new guy/girl/love anime. It's adorable! So far I've only gotten through about 6 of the episodes, but I already loved it from the first one. ;)

Here's a site with a summary...

http://www.animeacademy.com/library/fruitsbasket/fruitsbasket.html

I love it! Watch it! :):):)

*There's only 26 episodes and it's easy to find.

I understand how u feel about the show, it is a wonderful series no doubt. We just have to pray for the 2nd season to come soon. Fruits Basket is such an anime that drives people crazy - like u Kakashi Sensei. :D

I love it too! I love it too!! But I like the manga better, I can't wait for the next issue to come out. Not that I'm going to buy it, mind you, I'm just going to snatch it still-warm from my friend's grasp so I can avidly peruse the Kyo-ful goodness. Mmmmm...

Hehe, trueness... but I don't think there's gonna be a second season. :( The last episode was made 12/01 so it's almost two years since the series came to be. :(:(:(:(:(:( Waaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!:sad::sad::sad: And I can't find a place to get the earlier mangas either. :(:(:( Stupid people... if the world were up to me I'd force them to make the rest of the anime series! ERRR! Stupid people! You can't just STOP a series in the middle of the manga! It just doesn't WORK!

According to the Director of Fruits Basket, there is no second season planned. Fruits Basket is a very subtle series. Takaya Natsuki (the mangaka) has put stuff in the beginning of the manga that is just now (13 volumes later) starting to be of consequence. Alot of really important stuff was left out of the original series, and I don't think they could do justice to a second season because of the things that were left out. Much as I love the series, I think a second season would not live up to expectations.

I heard from a friend that the company who produced FB said Shojo's (girls) animes aren't as popular in Japan as Shounen (guys anime) anime. So their isn't going to another season. In Japan second seasons are decided on how popular the series was, It may have been popular else were but their only looking at Japan not the fansub community and the US and other countries that licensed it.

Man,I don't really get it considering how popular Fruits Basket bacame in the US. I mean, Funimation had been sold out of copies for quite sometime you would think at least they could finance a second season. I could just pray and hope, I guess. "Why God? Why?!" <- over-dramatic :heh:

O.K I just finished the series last night, and damn that sucks! I really need to find how the rest of the story turns out! I have a few questions maybe someone can answer.

First of all, I know the anime is licensed. Is the manga licensed as well? If not, does anyone know where to find it?

Also my friend warned me to stay away from Fruits Basket, he had only read the manga and said the art was very ummmm, different. He said every character looks really girly, of course the anime turned out to be very different and I liked the art style. Is the Manga really that different?

Also regardless of if the manga is licensed, does anyone know if there is a place that just gives summaries? I don't really want to read the manga so much as just know what happens to the characters later. Could anyone maybe just give a rundown of how things turn out?

Thanks!

Can't really say how things turn out because the series isn't finished yet. The art of the manga is very similar to the anime, but around volume 8 the art changes a bit. I believe I remember seeing a liner note translated in which the mangaka decided to age the characters a little bit to make them look older. Personally, I think it looks alot better later on. The happy flavor of the early volumes fades alot, and takes a darker turn as more information about the curse filters through.

The manga is also very complex compared to the anime. Takaya Natsuki is a pretty devious writer, and events that took place as early as volume 1 are just now starting to unravel. It's like reading a really good detective mystery, with plenty of deciphering to do.

Best place to go for summaries is: http://www.randomfandom.com/fruits-manga.shtml

That page. On the right side. Third picture from the top. Tohru, Kyo and Yuki. Tohru is leaning away from Kyo and towards Yuki. NOOOOOOOOOO!!! Is the mangaka trying to tell us something? *weeps*

Yeah, a box would have been nice. However, they did some other stuff right, so I can't complain too much. 6-7 episodes per disk plus some nice extras on each disk make it well-worth the money.

is this still an unlicensed anime?

well whatever it is I think I saw the last episode...I watched it without knowing what it was because it was on this cd that some1 burned me with rahxephon a while back I think maybe 3 years I'm not sure exactly how long ago, but tahts not important...

tell me if I'm wrong, but...is this the show with the guy..kyo that wears beads on his wrist that are black and white to stop him from trasnforming into some brown feral kind of thing and there is this guy who has this illness who was born to die and such??? I was totally lost when I was watching it, but I guess that ruined the whole series for me :heh:

o well, but then you guys are talking about DVDs so that muct mean that it is licensed, but then why is it the suggestions forum without the first post asking for new anime ok I'm just taking up space in this thread, but I still would like to know if what I am asking is right about the series...

FinFangFoom
2003-12-02, 07:44
Yes you are correct, it's the same series as the one you watched back then. If it seems like one you might like if it had'nt been ruined for you I would'nt worry about that, there are a lot of other characters and plot development besides just that one. It's not as big of a spoiler as it may seem.

Alright, I love Animesuki!!! Ok, now that that's over with I have a question, I've been recently been getting hounded by my g/f to somehow d/l Fruits Basket...."NO IT'S NOT FOR ME!!" Um, yeah so I was looking and curious if anyone was doing any fansubs for it here. I couldn't find one, and either thought it was 1 of 3 things. A) I'm stupid and just to handicap of the head software and can't see it. B) It's under another name, it's real Japanese name. Or C) Nobody has dubbed it cause it's alright here trans by Funi... >_<

So, anyone help me out here.

There were fansubs, yes. But now that it's liscensed, distribution of those fansubs should have stopped. even groups that only stop distro after a DVD release should ahve stopped, because the show is all out on DVD.

In fact, it's one of the most affordable anime titles out there. The entire series comes on four discs, and Funi did a great job with the translation. The dubbing is scary sometimes, but if you watch it subtitled, it's great.

Yes, absolutely. I believe there are 6 episodes on the first two discs, and 7 on the second two (26 episodes in all). Plus, it's a pretty high quality production; even the dub isn't *bad* (although the original voices are better). It's a good deal, and in my opinion, it's well worth it. I really enjoyed Fruits Basket.

They're $25 each actually at Barnes & Noble (http://video.barnesandnoble.com/search/results.asp?quickSearchType=WRD&FRM=0&quickSearchText=fruits+basket)

There's practically no excuse!

P.S. Was moving my DVDs and checked the Fruits Baskets discs in passing. It's 1-6, 7-12, 13-19, and 20-26. Actually, I think I might start watching these DVDs again, now that I've been reminded of it.

I LOVE this anime series. Even though it may have been targeted towards little girls.
I got some questiosn about it though.

When Kyo asks Kagura why she loves him so much Kagura says that he forgot something. What did he forget?

and also, the ugly form kyo has is there because the cat's are rotten with revenge?

1. Kagura meant that he forgot that he use to reach out to her when they were kids specially since everyone seemed to hate him.

2. I believe that is the case since they are possessed by the vengeful spirits they end up with that form. I think towards the end of 24 or 25 they mentioned it.

Is it worth the money?

There are four DVDs that cost $26 each at Amazon.com; I'm really tempted to buy them because I love this series, but since it was made by FUNimation and I've heard that FUNimation isn't that good, I'd like to see some other opinions before I buy.

Btw, I'm a miserly cheapskate who's only ever bought one anime (Spirited Away), which is why I'm indecisive about spending $100 on anime.

Thanks for your help.

If you've seen it and enjoyed the series, I would say it's well worth buying the DVDs. I didn't find anything wrong with Funimation at all (but then I'm not such a nitpicker). I didn't find any real problem with the translation or the transfer onto DVD.

And I would like to point out that other on-line places, such as DVD Pacific, are selling them for $19 each (see here (http://www.dvdpacific.com/search.asp?title=fruits+basket)). When you add in P&P it still comes to only $82 for the four DVDs.

Buy it now, every anime fan should own a copy of Fruit Basket.Agreed; it's a great show, and well worth the money. I agree with xris that Funimation did a really good job with this release; even the English dub, while not quite as effective as the Japanese one, is quite well done. Plus, at $100, it's a great value - the upcoming boxset makes it that much more appealing. So, yeah, I say definitely buy it - if not now, for sure when the boxset comes out. You already said you loved the show, so it's pretty hard to go wrong spending money on things you already know you like. (Then again, this could be why my bank balance never grows... :heh: )

The FUNi DVDs of Fruits Basket are fine, apart from dodgy AV quality (when you look closely on a monitor) and some other things I COULD nitpick about.

But, they're fine.

So go buy them.
Now.

I need the last volume still :(

I'm waiting for a Right Stuf FUNi sale to pick up that boxset for $54 USD :D
Also note the $100 pricetag is the MSRP, many stores, online and off will sell anime DVDs at lower than the MSRP--how much lower depends on where you shop. :)

I recall there being extremely bad timing when watching Fruits Basket DVDs. Subs appearing and disappearing over no dialogue, random places to split up monologues, and just very strange, though consistent, leadin / leadout values.

Subs appearing and disappearing over no dialogue, random places to split up monologues, and just very strange, though consistent, leadin / leadout values. There is only one spot in the entire series of DVDs that I've noticed anything like that, and all that happened was a subtitle vanished about 2 seconds before the dialogue ended. Could it be, rather, that you had the wrong subtitle track enabled?

There's some fairly bad timing.
Complete ignorance when it comes to cutting subs for scene changes.
Complete ignorance when it comes to relising that JOINING SUBS THAT ARE TEN SECONDS APART IS NOT COOL
Also, the timer/typesetter seemed completely incablable of doing anythung with a song playing AND two people speaking.
But it's certainly not that bad: Most of the start and end times are "consistant", I guess.

There's no such thing as Fruits Basket series 2, nor will there ever be (or at least it's most unlikely there will ever be a second series).

If you want to find out more of the story you will have to read the manga. It's being translated by TokyoPop so it's available in English.

(note: I will merge this thread in with the main Fruits Basket thread)

...Gee, I sound like a commercial.
How can you say it's barely heard of!The Manga is one the top selling shojo manga in the world. Not to mention the fact that the manga is actually better than the anime(I didn't like the choice of voice actors)There are currently 13 manga released by Tokyopop in the US and the plot is so much deeper than that of the anime. #14 will be released in August featuring the ever-mysterious Kureno Sohma(THe rooster who doesn't appear in the anime).#13 has rin (Isuzu) sohma(the horse) on the cover who also is not in the anime(Possibly because she's not nice and does not like tohru). Kyo is also a lot hotter in the manga and a lot more mysterious. He also matures a bit and fights a lot less with Yuki by the 10th book.(though there is still some cnflict) So I urge you to buy both (I have) and distinguish which one you like better! Sayonara!
~Kyonkichi~
PS The voice actor who does Ayame's voice in the anime also does vegita in DBZ
PPS The English theme songs(Beginning and end)of the anime are just translated from the original Japanese songz.(And done a bit poorly, i think)

Ahem, can someone please spoil the ending of Fruits Basket for me? Please? :heh:

I was at a friend's house today and happened to see episode number 20-something.

Chances are I'm not going to buy this series because (1) I don't like Chinese dubs, and only Chinese dubs are sold where I live, and (2) I don't have any money (even US$20 is a lot for me). Still, I'm extremely curious about the ending.

So, can someone kind please spill and spoil and explain it a bit? Thanks a lot in advance! Heeheehee.

The ending of the anime? The manga isn't finished.

Ikito told them to get rid of Tohru.
Everyone refuses.
Tohru visits Akito and Akito slaps the crap out of her.
She then hugs akito and everyone is fine.
We are at the same state of the anime but we haven't met the Horse, Monkey, Sheep and one other I think.

Thank you too!

I guess you're right: Forbin's "spoiler" didn't really spoil anything because it's essentially "oh, so they go back home, and it's I love you, you love me, we're a happy family..."

Right then, I'll wait until I somehow get the $/£/¥ on my hands (maybe in two years' time), and I'll buy the manga.

I either didn't get the ending or I did(of the anime). So let me get this right; so in the end it's like "And everyone lives happily ever after". If this is the ending then they should have made a second series at least...or an OVA.

Now about the manga. So it's still coming out? There is no "manga-ending" so far?

Like most anime based on an on going manga they ended it in a way that they could finish the story when the manga ended. "Full Moon wo Sagashite" is the only one I know of with a real ending and it was an alternate universe type story that diverged from the one told in the manga. Perhaps, now that the manga is nearing it's conclusion, they will have another season and finish the story.

Basically what you mean is that they finished the Fruits Basket anime series according to the manga release that was out at that time?

Basically. I don't think that they covered everything that was out, but they chose what they though was a good stopping point and covered everything that they could with that as the ending.

So if I decided to buy the manga and don't want to read all of it from the start(unless you will suggest me to do so) where should I start?

I would recommend reading it from the start. Everyone looks different in the Manga (Especially Tohru) and you need to get used to their new looks

IMHO.

Also it's a good read.

As far as I can tell, Yuki is the better match for Tohru in the anime - but they do seem to be leaning towards Kyo.

Unfortunately this is all academic as long as the curse remains. Is there a cure?

I always thought that a Tohru-Kyo match would be required to break the curse and from what I have heard that is what has happened.

Yes, in the manga.

I guess the easy way out would be to break Kyo's curse and leave Yuki's intact... that would make Kyo the default winner.

Sorry but no second season has been planned so far.
Since 2001, Studio Deen has constantly been denying all rumors regarding a second season. ^^''

And about the manga, the next chapter (132) will coming out the 05 sept. and perhaps it will be the last from it. But that's not really sure 'cause, on the site of Hana to Yume, they speak about "the beginning of the last straight line towards the end of the history ".... i hope that's right ; p

The anime only goes up to volume 7-ish of the manga so you can't really compare. It's quite loyal to the Takaya-sensei's plot... and all the original episodes weren't useless fillers. I think the anime was pretty well done. However, that's not to say the manga wasn't any good. Personally, I think the manga is quite brilliant. Plot-wise, I think Takaya-sensei is amazing. I love how she gets into the psychological-depth of the characters and the way the plot thickens almost at the end of every volume. It's moving, really, if you can forgive some of the over-the-top emo-ness of some characters.

In terms of art, Takaya-sensei's style changes dramatically as the manga continues, I think. From volume one we see very busy pages stock-full of drawings and her characters feel cute, bordering even on immature. However... as the manga progresses, her style--I don't really know if it's because she's influenced by her assisstants or what--becomes more... mature, I suppose. Pages become emptier... and there're more black frames than there are white. (Damn, that's a lot of ink)... over all, the tone of the manga goes really, really dark.

Of course, the humour's still there and it still coaxes a chuckle of two from the reader. The Fruits Basket manga is really one of my favourites. Worh reading.

Now about that second season for the anime...

Unfotunately, due to Akito's "real" gender... the production of a second season for the anime is impossible, considering the fact that Akito was very obviously a guy in the anime. They can't do anything that wouldn't cause a confusion. I mean, there would be huge inconsistencies between the two seasons if they decided to continue and follow Takaya-sensei's plot... or there would be huge inconsistencies between the manga and the anime if they decided to do something different. Not a lot of fans would be happy with that.

The manga gets angstier and darker... and there are bits that get annoying. Especially Akito's emotional outbursts... I mean, really. And the ending... hm. I wonder if anyone would want to discuss this with me? I'm not sure... but I'm not entirely happy with what they did with Yuki. And I have a lot of things I want to say about Akito. Would love to hear another's opinion on it.

Maybe I should look for a thread about this topic....

Loved the Kagura-Kyo bits; but I suppose it would've run out of steam after a while. And maybe Yuki was too convenient a love interest... the roller coaster potential is certainly greater with Kyo.

Not unhappy with how things turned out - as long as they don't pull a SHUFFLE!, I'm fine with it.

That was her purpose in fact. She wants to show how Kyo, Tohru and others become more mature, more adult. On the begining of the manga, if i remember well, they start in 2-sc, and at the end they're preparing university ;) And their vision of the world, of the situation evolve (i think it's the correct word <<''). And that's why her style changes too. If she didn't do that, the feelings wouldn't have passed as well.
(oh god my english is so bad oO')

And by the way, it's the same thing in the anim, at the end, the ambiance is more darker than at the start ; p But it's less obvious than in the manga ^^'
Right, there'll be be huge inconsistencies that's why they don't want to do a second season. (And also, the first season was created only in the purpose of making some pub for the manga ^^)

The last few episodes made me cry :P but still, it was overall a really good, touching and addicting series, and i wish they would make a season 2.

one of the reasons is that there are so many unanswered questions, like..what became of tohru...and if she would ever choose between kyo and yuki in the future? The first post was completely wrong-- WHAT girl/guy/romance thing...at the end it just seemed that they were all friends, i mean..I still can't figure everything out, but romance is not one of them at this point...
but in the future? we'll NEVER know..

also, i dont think all the animals of the zodiac were mentioned? anyway, to the producers of this manga, you should create season two, and be surprised at how many people would be happy. :)

the manga goes alot further into the story and all the zodiac animals are introduced. So far Tohru still hasn't decided between kyo and yuki, but I think she will have to choose later on in the manga series. Plus they are still making more manga (vol. 16 came out recently)

Fantastic anime! Tearing mandatory for some episodes... so if you like emotional animes this is definitely the one to go for!

Part of the reason is that the author of the manga really hated the anime. There is also the fact that in the anime Akito is obviously male.
Finally the show probably was only slated for 2 cour from the beginning. Most anime actually don't end up being properly complete.

I would say "Appeared to be male." It is not impossible for a not overly endowed woman to appear to be a man if she binds her assets, does her hair properly, and dresses like a man.

Flyvedelta

They should remake this like FMA. . I can't believe they made Akito as a male :(
And the story in the manga is getting far better and, I think, all of the good sides in the manga which I like is in the second part of the story (when it's getting more serious part and starts telling about Yuki's past).

In Vietnamese Zodiac, the cat replaces the rabbit (while all other 11 animals are the same)-- so the cat can go to the banquet! XD ..... I heard that it's because the cat is a contrast to the rat :D (I'm ignorant of the real reason behind it though) :D

I bet Ranma 1/2 (by Rumiko Takahashi) was quite an influence for Fruits Basket! You can see clear parallels between the two series. While Ranma 1/2 is humor-driven, Fruits Basket delves deeper into the drama. Another plus point is the way events and occurrences are organized in FB: revealing a little at a time while holding back the essentials. If the characters' personal stories were organized differently or told immediately, the story would be less appealing.

Besides having people turn into animals, I don't see any other connections between Furuba and Ranma.

Maybe the rabbit was ousted because it was a redundant rodent and cats are cuter.:D

It's just like Snake and Dragon.

I bet 100% that FB's author had read Ranma 1/2 and took some ideas from it.
Some examples: the interactions between Yuki & Kyou is very similar to that between Ranma & Hibiki.
Hatsuharu's terrible of sense of direction (does it ring any bell?)
and the themes of a belonging place, the wish to be accepted by society, etc.

I like the happy ending.

However, one thing I'm most disappointed about is:
Momiji's story is the most interesting to me, but is utterly unresolved. Although his curse was broken very soon, though he's willing to stay a grade behind in order to meet his little sister Momo, there isn't a single scene showing Momiji playing with her. In the end, we never know whether or not Momiji shall be recognized by his mother and sister. What a big frustration!!
