what's this reputation crap on my profile? it says 10 points.

Reputation is given to you by others in the forum. Whether it is positive or negative depends on whether the liked your post or not.
There is a button under your avatar w/ the check and "x." You use that to give Reputation.
That little green dot under your avatar is used to tell your current status. Run your mouse over it to see a comment.
Everyone starts with 10 Reputation points. Some people's Reputation points are worth more than others.
You can also disable Reputation in your options.
