Indeed it is awesome. So much game and an EXCELLENT battle system (I haven't played too many RPGs) that make it incredibly fun to play. The music is fitting and the characters are wonderful. The story will run about 48-52 hours (took me 60 cause my Japanese isn't that smooth,) but fills the game. There are lots of sidequests you can undertake during the course of the game and many subevents that keep the game interesting as well. I need to go through with my guidebook and track these down.

Apparently it's the first 2-disc Gamecube game, but it makes great use with lots of voice segments when in town and on the worldmap, as well as the cel-shading engine making the whole game feel like a giant anime episode. There are only a few FMV anime clips, notably the OP, one mid-game sequence, and the ending. There are two CG clips in the game, but otherwise the game engine provides a lot of the cinematics and storytelling.

I finished playing it sometime back in November (first RPG completed only in Japanese!) and if you need any excuse to get a Gamecube, Tales of Symphonia and Viewtiful Joe are the ONLY reasons you need.

Do you mean the first 2-disc RPG? As there have been a few 2-disc GC games released.

If the domestic sales are pretty good(and I don't doubt that, this game is great), it wouldn't surprise me if Namco brought the PS2 version here.

Read up a bit. If you ever needed a game to justify your buying a gamecube, whether you have one or not, Tales of Symphonia will do it.

The awesome battle system, story, and graphics make it more than worthwhile. I can't speak to the audio present in the US release (since I played the JP release and have no interest in playing it in English.)

Oh, and it's not the first 2 disc game, but the first 2 disc RPG. Also, the first original RPG for the GC (it came out before Crystal Chronicles did in Japan.)

Wouldn't be so sure about it. Even though it has got some good reviews, several of them also mention that the story is pretty unsurprising and regular, and the characters as well. Myself, I'm wondering how the party relationships develope and is there something like in Baldur's Gate 2 -dialog romances or the sort? :hmm:

Wouldn't want to waste my money on yet another AXN HACK'n'SLASH.

I've come to notice that very very few RPGs actually have a worthwhile story that goes beyond the archetypal save-the-world-with-the-four-crystals-yay format. But since the real reason I play RPGs is for the gameplay, I consider a decent story to be icing on the cake. Since I have enjoyed the other Tales games, I am heartily looking forward to grabbing this on the next trip to the game store, and I am not particularly putting any expectations on the story.

Yup, I agree with you, both in general and specifically regarding this game. The story is quite archtypical and predictable, but the game is still a lot of fun to play. I'm enjoying it a lot so far - definitely worth the purchase!

ToS's battle system, EX Skill system, and magic/attacks are awesome. Haven't played an RPG like it, really do like how it handles (and I'd like to see what kind of grade a mid to high level team could get if all 4 were player controlled.)

One downside to the US release, apparently none of the in-game skits (triggered when you hit the Z button) have audio in the English version. All of those skits (of which there are 300+) had voice acting in the Japanese version.

I just found this out the other day. Apparently Namco has been mangling the US release of the Tales series for some time now...

Is it completely disabled or can you choose between english and chinese audio? Original is always the best, and I'm pretty disappointed to the regular, english voice-acting. Would be shame to miss it...

As for what Navi said, this the only 'good' rpg on gamecube? Go pick up Skies of Arcadia Legends ;)

Tales of Symphonia is a prequel to Tales of Destiny (PSX), the second instailment of the series, not to Tales of Phantasia.

About the similarities, I haven't played ToS but Namco has this tendence to include similar techniques for the main character, similar basic items etc. BTW I don't believe Midgard would be an equivalent to Asgard. Midgard is usually your supper uber technology city

In tales of phantasia they built the mysteq cannon, the best weapon ever

While Asgard is usually a frozen town or empire.

Apart from that I wouldnt be surprised if they shared other minor things, but I'd rather attribute it to the lack of imagination of the game editors :p

Well anyone els geting the god of all RPG's (yes even beast Final fantasy if u ask me)

The 1st of the series to be released in the west.
But god this game is good over 80hrs gameplay , sweet cell shaded GFX , ang amazing anime cut sceens.

So anyone els get it and what do you think ?

microlith
2004-12-21, 15:00
There's actually only one anime sequence, and that's the OP and the ending.

There are two FMV sequences in the game, both CG not featuring the characters :)

All other cutscenes are engine-generated.

After playing it about this time last year, I really liked it a lot. it took me about 60 hours to finish, but I was playing slow cause it was in Japanese and I didn't bother leveling my characters to 99.

It's a really fun game, and I like the battle system a lot. Not a bad choice for what is effectively only my 3rd RPG, first one outside of Final Fantasy. I guess you could count Golden Sun, but it played so much like final fantasy it was almost the same.

So play, enjoy, if you have the english version you also have my sympathies as Namco USA didn't bother recording audio for the skits.

I'll finally be getting the (for me) US import version of Tales of Symphonia in about a week.
Why import? Because Namco removed the 60 Hz option from the game for the EU release, making it only in 50 Hz! >_< And this while their previous game, Soul Calibur, did have it!
It's a crying shame to me.

That game certainly was my best surprise of 2004. I hadn't bought any new game for over a year and I really needed to get something new. I bought this game thinking "wow! 'looks cool !" In fact, that game was so cool that I played well over 100 hrs in a few weeks ;) I love the anime style and the battle system, and I really liked the story, which is quite more complex than it looks like.

I can't imagine how a RPG player could skip this one...

Chinese? What the hell have you been smoking? This is a Japanese game. And no, you can't switch to the original.

I don't mind the skits not being voiced. The game features a lot of voice in other areas, so I think they did a big effort to voice those in English.

I've heard the original Japanese voices, and the new English ones are almost the same voice. I think they did a great job.

Tales of Symphonia is a prequal to Tales of Phantasia, not Destiny as evidenced by numerous references in ToP
Many of these links are subtle but are far beyond a traditional cameo apearance or unoriginal location name, these include the Goddess Martel (ToS) and the tree spirit Martel of the mana tree Yggdrasil (ToP). Yggdrasil is what many fans believe Lloyd and company renamed the The Giant Kharlan Tree (ToS) (its been awhile so I hope I spelled that right as well as the next one :heh: ) At the final confrontation with Dhaos he mentions "Derris Karran" (ToP) which is very similar to Derris Kharlan (ToS) and with my pathetic experience with Japanese I know about the L vs R in translation so that could explain it. (:frustrated: Screw these stupid names).

Syn13
2006-07-31, 04:49
I haven't played ToP and I stopped in ToS near the end(I should really finish it) but there are many numerous connections to each other...I can't name them since its been a while but I looked into it back then.
P.S.
In ToS, the Mana Cannon is supposively a really really strong weapon. There's also the to worlds concept in them:
ToE - Two worlds parallel to each other(literally), the cast has solve it before the worlds collide.
ToP - I think this was the Past and Future thing...
ToS - Parallel dimensions, Mana isn't balanced between the both worlds.

Hopefully for people who are planning to buy this or are currently trying to find it, be sure it is the cheap one...Something like Playstation's "The Best" titles or Greatest Hits...I dunno what Nintendo's 1000 sold titles are.
I bought this a while ago and I never regretted it, simply one of my fav's back then and IMO I thought the english dubbing was pretty decent in it~
This game is overall great:
-Action/RPG style
-Great full story
-Nice animation
-Choose any of the female character in the game as main character's love interest
-COSTUMES!!
-Sheena - Favorite character of the game!

LOL I noticed that Llyod's VA is Robin from Teen Titans~

Wikipedia has a whole thing on this:
* The similarities between the world map of Sylvarant and Tethe'alla in Symphonia, and the world map of Aselia in Phantasia.
* The name of the world in Phantasia, Aselia, and the name of Lloyd's hometown, Iselia.
* What's more, in the end of Symphonia, Lloyd leaves Kratos's sword, the Flamberge, by Anna's grave. In Phantasia, the Sorcerer's Ring is found in an underground temple near where the Flamberge is in that game. The Sorcerer's Ring in Symphonia likely was returned to the Temple of Martel, near Anna's grave as well.
* The names of the moons in Phantasia, Sylvarant and Tethe'alla. These names are the same as those given to the worlds in Symphonia. Further, Sylvarant's moon in Symphonia is called "Tethe'alla," meaning the inverse is possible, if not likely. This would mean that the recombined world would have two moons, bearing the names of the two worlds, as in Phantasia.
* One of Lloyd's final weapons, the 'Material Blade,' are two of the three components necessary to forge the Eternal Sword in Phantasia, the Flamberge and Vorpal Sword.
* Cless's fighting style is a fusion of Lloyd's (various techniques like Sword Rain), Kratos's (techniques like Hell Pyre), and Regal's (the inclusion of Swallow Kick). In a skit in Symphonia, Lloyd mentions he would like to learn how to fight like Regal, to which Regal accepts.
* The possibility that Suzu Fujibayashi in Phantasia is a distant descendant of Sheena Fujibayashi in Symphonia.
* The existence of Ymir Forest as home of the Elves in both games.
* The fact that the final enemy in Phantasia, Dhaos, has angel wings in his final form; just as the 'angels' of Cruxis do in Symphonia and that the energy comes from Derris Kharlan.
* The renaming of the Great Kharlan Tree in the finale of Symphonia, where it is implied that Lloyd renamed the tree Yggdrasill in honor of the fallen hero/villain, Mithos.
* The similarity of the names of the heroes - Lloyd's "Irving" is very similar to Cless/Cress's "Alvein," given that Japanese pronunciation does not differentiate between the letters "r" and "l," giving "Arvein." It's possible that the name "Alvein" was an attempt at translating the English name "Irving" into the Japanese character system, a translation later done differently with Lloyd's "Āvingu."
* The existence of Martel in Phantasia, as well as the other summon spirits, save Celsius
* The location of the summon spirit Origin, who appears in a forest behind the home of the Elves in the Ymir forest in both games.
* The book Abyssion uses is called the "Necronomicon" which is also the name of Klarth's book/weapon he starts with in Phantasia (even though the book was destroyed by Genis after the battle with Abyssion).
* Similar themes concerning discrimination of half-elves.
* The angel Dhaos is from Derris-Kharlan, home of angels in Symphonia.
* The mention of the long-dead legendary pirate, Ifreed, in Phantasia and the presence of the pirate Aifread in Symphonia.
* In the anime adaptation of Tales of Phantasia it is stated that Dhaos returned to Derris-Kharlan.

I LOVE this game!:)
Tales of Symphonia is my absolute favorite rpg, I was hoping there was a thread for this!:)
I love the characters in this game, they're all so excellently portrayed. I loved the hints of romance between Lloyd and Colette, and of course, I love Zelos (who doesn't?).
One of the best things about this game is the battle system. Tos' battle system is the best I've ever seen! I'ts very intuitive and interesting, and so fun to play! I love beating up the grand cardinals, and the battles seem so... epic. For some reason I thought that the final boss was really easy though.
Another thing I love about this game is the music. I especially like the grand cardinal fight music, but all the tunes are excellent.
My favorite main character was Colette, she's so cute.:) I like how she's clumsy and a bit clueless, but has good intentions.
My favorite non-main character was Yuan, becuase he's... just really cool. His weapon is awesome, and I love that blue hair. I like the voice they picked for him, too, and his ego thing.
Heck, I love every aspect of Tales of Symphonia!
It's the best game I've ever played!:)

I played the game a second time the past couple of months. Now, I like the game a lot, but the story past the first big plot twist has issues.
First you rescue Collette, which is understandable. Then you vow to find a way to have both worlds prosper. But after that, it's all downhill.

You suddenly decide to help Presea, and embark on what is essentially a side-quest, stopping by Mizuho on the way for an obligatory spotlight to remind you where the story should -really- be going. And when you finally can rescue Presea from her Exsphere, Collette gets kidnapped. Great, and you have to jump through hoops to rescue her, which is making a pact with Volt to power the Rheairds, and then find the Rheairds themselves.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that you accidently find what seems to be a way to stop the two worlds vying for mana by defeating Volt. Wow, how lucky! So after rescuing Collette, you make pacts with all these Summon Spirits, which is really an excuse to give you more dungeons to go through and make the game longer.

On the way you also take part in Regal's affairs. Then after that you defeat Rodyle, before forming the rest of the pacts.

Oh no, what's that? YOU WERE WRONG. YOUR ACTIONS KILLED A LOT OF PEOPLE. Then you have to fix that.

Then you find out that you have to save Collette YET AGAIN, because she's sick. Oh, and how lucky we are to learn of the world's true history in the process, and the intents of Yggdrassil!

Next you do what you should have done in the first place: getting rid of Mithos, gaining access to the Eternal Sword, and make the Great Seed sprout.
The first part of the game was great, but then they have you do all this side shit and make you visit places instead of, you know, carrying the story forward!

The first part of the game was great, but then they have you do all this side shit and make you visit places instead of, you know, carrying the story forward!

Lol, just like any of the Tales titles (I feel the most "straightforward" one was Tales of Destiny).
Story fits the framework of some of the other Tales games - the twists in particular. Characters were certainly memorable, but what annoyed me the most about the games was the amount of cut scenes one needed to endure to move on. Oh, and the Rheirds or whatever didn't seem to handle that well.

Last boss was a lot easier than, let's say, the original Dhaos from ToP - even in mania. Some of the additional gimmicks require a certain someone to still be alive and kicking after reaching a certain point in the game. Certainly has replay value, and I've blazed through it about a third time to get the better "points" goodies.

I believe the battle system of TOS is similar to Star Ocean 3 right?
Sorta. Heh, it's interesting to note that both the Tales and Star Ocean franchises owe their existence to the same group.

Wow.....I finished the game a few years back and played it again today. Beat it. But wow....I just noticed that the ending doesn't seem satisfying enough.....the fact that we know Lloyd is going around helping people and you kinda get a hint that one day Daras Karlan is coming back. And what the flip does Lloyd name the freakin tree?! They just end right before he says it! You know? I really wish that that had a squel game. -_- seriously......anyone agree or comments on the ending?

The tree ?
IRC, in an interview with some dev of the game it was said
that the world of symphonia and phantasia are in the same.
Most people assume that Phantasia takes place somewhere
in the future of Symphonia, or to make it simple,
symphonia is the prequel to phantasia,
depends from what point you view it, i guess.
So the name Lloyd gave the tree is assumed to be yggdrasill.

btw play-asia have a used copy of phantasia for the super famicon in stock,
if you're interested, or you can get one of the ports,
i.e. psp with full voice, playstation or gba version.

Daras Karlan
You've played the game through two times and you can't spell that? It's Derris-Kharlan.

Yes, the ending sucks. If there's something I've learned by playing games and reading some books, it's that people can't make good endings to their creative works anymore since the last 20 years or longer. If you can call some of these 'endings' endings.

The game's story isn't anything special anymore after the Tower of Salvation anyway. The second CD picks it up a bit, but it's still lacklustre. Basically, the story constantly gets interrupted by little side quests, breaking the flow and detracting from the main story. It's so bad that often when the main story gets attention again, it's by accident/chance.

Ah yes, it's my favorite game for the Game Cube! It's challenging and beautiful. A must-buy for RPG lovers.

Actually, Tales of Symphonia has come out on the Game Cube. Thats the system that I played it on. It's quite the deliteful game.

Lol, just wondering but how many of you have gotten all items and titles on the game. I am still missing a few and one of the titles that I may not achieve because I do not have the heart to kill a certain monster.;)

Here's hoping that, if it's true, it's a remake rather than a remaster.

Agreed. Hopefully with upgraded battle system and graphics too :D

Yes, because looking back on it the one things I didn't like with symphonia's battle system was no free run. Its like a prerequisite nowadays.:heh:

Bleh, if only this was announced a few months earlier, else I wouldn't have bought the original Symphonia on Gamecube. :eyespin:

I had to borrow Dawn of the New World from a friend of mine though cause I couldn't find it anywhere else, so there's still some worth to me getting this.~

I'm skeptical it's a remake though, as nice as that would be. It's probably just another title to add to the "HD remaster" trend.

There was already a remake on the PS2. It had extra cutscenes, ougis, titles, and costumes compared to the Gamecube version.

I am crying tears of joy
I never owned a Gamecube or a Wii so I was never able to play the localized version.

I've always say this whenever Namco Bandai announces a localized version but I wish for an undub.
same as my wish for Xillia because of Miyuki Sawashiro, Symphonia has Nana Mizuki.
oh well
a man can dream, right?
I know it's never gonna happen... but still

lol, Baba-P is such a liar. First he told us that Symphonia Remaster is just a rumor, and now we have this announcement :heh: Kinda disappointed that there will be no new Tales mothership title this year though.

It's possible. The main reason it couldn't be done before was because they'd have to make new contracts for the Japanese voice actors/actresses to allow it, which would mean more money spent. However, if these games are getting new voice work done, then they'd need new contracts anyway. Thus, it could be put in that they could use the voices for overseas versions as well.

And given how close the release dates are, it wouldn't surprise me if this were the case if both versions were bilingual. Japanese gamers enjoy American dubs at times as well.

Actually, all he said was it was the first he had heard of the rumor (which was also true for most people), and that if it happened it'd sure make a lot of people happy. He neither denied it nor confirmed it. Besides, it's not like he's going to spill the beans when they obviously wanted to use Tales Fest to hype it up.

Oh and here I was hoping they revamp it a bit so that it has graphics similar to Xillia :( then again, a HD remastered isn't all that bad now that I think about it. I never played Symphonia 2 too so being given a chance to play it in my PS3 is a good news.

Unfortunately since I already played the original over 8 times, I think I've had enough Symphonia for a lifetime :heh:

I'd be interested in replaying Dawn of the New World if they make the Symphonia cast fully playable with customizable gear, stats, and skills like a regular character, but I doubt that will happen.

Von Himmel

I never really 'played' it (just borrow it for a couple of fights from my friend) so I'm really interested in this :D Since Symphonia seems to be highly regarded by western market too, I must say that Baba really did make an excellent choice with excellent timing.

And even though I know the sequel has mixed response, Johnny Yong Bosch as Ratatosk and Laura Bailey as Marta is (♥o♥) !

(I would say on par with Shimono Hiro and Kugimiya Rie in some ways...)

Hmmm... I've already finished Symphonia on PS2 so this is a little bit of disappointment for me, I would have prefer a Rebirth/Destiny 2 remaster, but oh well, at least it's a good news that Tales series is still going strong, and that Baba-P still has love toward Western audience XD

Day 1 Buy, especially since I never got the chance to play either of the games. Daigo Okumura's designs for the characters are pretty likable. I still don't get the hate for Marta though; after watching a play through she doesn't seem that bad. :/
Still Tenebrae is the main reason I wanna play the game. ^^
