View Full Version : Series similar to Gundam Seed?
Hello... im a big fan of Gundam seed, and i was wondering if there is any good similar seres to it?
Assuming you haven't seen other Gundam series, try for the original Mobile Suit Gundam. SEED is considered to be the 21st Century Mobile Suit Gundam since most of the early story is based off of Gundam. If you can stand the 70s animation Mobile Suit Gundam will not dissappoint and is I think better done than SEED overall. If you were able to watch the first Gundam you have a lot of good Gundam series available you can watch in the Universal Century which it takes place in. AUs I suggest Turn A Gundam and Gundam X.
Other mech shows it depends more on your tastes, SDF: Macross is quite similar to Gundam a franchaise not as large as Gundam but still successful. Yoshiyuki Tomino's(original Gundam director) other series like Aura Battler Dunbine, Heavy Metal L-Gaim and Overman King Gainer are good choices for non-gundam series. Metal Armor Dragonar is one of the closest non gundam series you can get to Gundam. If all you really care for is the action and the story doesn't have to be amazing go for Super Robot series like Mazinger series, Getter Robo series, you can try Gear Fighter Dendoh which has the same director as SEED. Since there are a lot of mech shows it truely depends on your tastes.
What the F*** you mean detail my suggestion? When was that part of any rule? Beside that point, stop click the delete button like a manic and realize my post was oviously imformative.
Anyways <.<
You should try some of the other gundam series (like I said before, but some crazy ass mod deleted it becauase she/he/it seemed it lacked detail) like gundam wing or older versions.
*and how the hell do I detail my suggestion after you deleted my post... who the hell appoints these people to mod?*

Like the others said check out all the gundam you can get your hands on, you may find gundam seed lacking compared to some other series. If you want the same style of animation the closest I have seen is Scryed (licensed) I am not sure but i believe the design for G seed is the same people who did Scryed. Scryed is about rare people in the future who are born with powers and well they are hunted because they have this power by users the same as them. well things are not what they seem and thus alot of carnage ensues. I very much liked scryed, it was fluid animation and a story that was well thought out, check it.

Yeah, Scryed, Infinite Ryvius and the upcoming Soukyuu no Fafnir are all designed by SEED designer Hisashi Hirai, so you should check those out if you like his designs (which IMO are better depicted in those anime than in SEED).
As for other Gundam, the original MSG is definitely similar, but it might be a bit hard to watch that show after watching a modern show like Gundam SEED. Something like Victory, Wing or X might be a better transition, or maybe one of the OVA's. After watching the AU's or the newer UC's then you should start getting into the older UCs.

The animation in 0079, especially the quality available on the Movie Trilogy DVDs easily compares to SEED. I like it better cause the cel art is easier on the eyes, and the story is better.
In fact, SEED pulls a lot of its story from Mobile Suit Gundam and Z Gundam. I suggest grabbing the Mobile Suit Gundam movie trilogy boxed set from Bandai and watching that. Then I suggest you grab 08th MS Team and 0080: War in the Pocket. 0083 is up to you, I've not seen it and a lot of people haven't expressed a fondness for it but I hear the fights and action are good.
Then in September or so you can grab Bandai's Z Gundam box if you feel like diving in right away. Char's Counterattack is also out but that REQUIRES you be at least somewhat familiar with the events in the UC timeline to understand why people do the things they do.
V Gundam is UC as well, so I suggest waiting on that. If you want an alternate timeline, I suggest W (wing) or G Gundam. X I can't recommend cause it starts out as a wannabe 0079 but falters badly midway and just loses it towards the end. Turn A is from 1999 so is closest to SEED in terms of quality, but I haven't seen anything from it (own the OSTs though!) thus I can't immediately recommend it.

Hmm... I feel quite the opposite, since I couldn't bear watching the trilogy during the time I was watching SEED. It wasn't after I watch SEED was I able to settle down a bit and watch the trilogy again. Plus the fact that SEED was relatively slow while the MSG trilogy blazes through tons of plot in every 2 hour movie, so based on personal experience I wouldn't recommend it until the person is really ready to devote him/herself into Gundam.

Right, that's the reason why I didn't recommend watching Z or any of the Zeon arc shows until knowing a bit about its characters and setting more (through MSG and other sources). The OVA's (except for 0083) can work as standalone though since not many of the characters from the original shows show up.

V Gundam can pretty much stand alone without much background knowledge about UC (other than the Newtypes aspect of it), and its Earth vs. Colony storyline is pretty SEED-like which is why I recommended it. Wing is similar to SEED in a quite few ways that anyone who watch the two should be able to pick up. I have no idea how X could be a 0079-wannabe since the plot, setting, pace, and characters were entirely different. But anyway, the second half of SEED is similar to the second half of X so that's another good one to watch.
Turn A however is a bit weird for new fans to Gundam and really should be watched after getting used to Tomino's style first.
The director of Seed said that he was going for a mix of Wing and MSG. So Wing would fit the bill especially if you liked the latter half of Seed.

Actually I think he was referring to the toy sales (MSG and Wing being the two most popular Gundam in terms of sales), not to similarities between shows or anything.

Is it okay to ask when Soukyuu no Fafnir is out, or if it is already who is subbing it? I really want more info on this series, anybody know any good sites?
