I've been searching far and wide for a good comedy/drama along the lines of GTO to no avail. Something with no magic, robots, lazer guns, or crazy aliens. Just pure comedy/drama with good characters and none of the anime stereotypes. Anyone have any suggestions?

The closest thing to G.T.O. I've seen was something called Salaryman Kintaro. Only saw 1 episode posted tho.
You might enjoy Goldenboy. 6 ovas- The guy wanders around, taking different jobs randomly, and getting into all kinds of trouble.
Hajime no Ippo has the voice actor that did Onizuka's voice, and although its a more serious anime than GTO, there is still alot of great comedy, and there are plenty of wrinkle faced biker punks with pompadors.

maybe GTO live action...
or hikaru no go... no magic, just ghost.
Golden Boy is a short OVA with no real plot, just an excessive amount of ecchi. If you're into that, great...but it can't even be compared to Great Teacher Onizuka.
I can't really think of any series that are very similar to GTO but I have a few recommendations that all have similarities.
School Rumble: Entertaining plot and likeable characters, it lacks the dramatic story GTO has.
Hajime No Ippo: Longer series (76 episodes + movies), it can be pretty funny at times but it has serious points too; but not in the same way as GTO. You'll be amazed at how you find yourself enthralled in the boxing matches as if you were fighting yourself. I found myself attached to the characters in a way I never would have imagined.
I guess Hikaru no Go would also work, but I think Hajime no Ippo is closer to GTO than HnG is. If you end up watching (and liking) Ippo, you should deffinately watch Hikaru no Go...it's an amazing series in its own regard.
You could try Gokusen. Its about a granddaughter of a yakuza boss, who wants rather become a teacher than become the next yakuza boss.
But she gets a difficult class to handle...
Don't except something like GTO, this anime is completely diffrent.

I have been also looking for something like that too. But there arent any. Trust me. If there were animes like GTO, GTO wouldnt stand out that much. GTO is basically just the best. ( It made me cry when GTO finished :upset: )
Well if you want a substitue, you should try Eaither School Rumble ( its really funny) Or Acctually Try Mahou Sensei Negima(MSN), (http://anidb.info/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=2605)If you havent. Well MSN isnt as good GTO but it is basically Drama ( Sort of) + comedy.
Fushigi Yuugi is the closest thing to GTO. Drama + comedy.
Slam Dunk is the 2nd closest.

Slam Dunk is the 2nd closest.I don't know about Slam Dunk... but I'm pretty sure Fushigi Yuugi is pretty much unlike GTO in almost every way possible
I only saw a couple episodes, but Gokusen (http://anidb.info/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=1330) seemed very similar in story... but probably quite a bit inferior in quality.

I know Honey and Clover is dissimilar to Great Teacher Onizuka, but if you like some comedy that would make you laugh (decent comedy), and some drama that moves the psyche (excellent drama), don't hesitate to check it out.
I don't think any anime is similar to GTO. It's just unique in its own way, just like Honey and Clover is. (A word of caution, however: do not watch Honey and Clover II if you're seeking a comedy-drama balance - it concentrates more on the drama [shall I say saturates?] and character development than comedy for the most part.)
