View Full Version : I'm looking for a game similar to Crescendo

I wasn't into H-games until my friend forced me into playing Crescendo. He knew I was going to like it and he kept bugging me to try it. It was the first H-game I've ever played and damn, he was right. This game got me hooked for days. I never understood how something like Kiminozo could come from an H-game but I now I get it.
Anyway, I enjoyed this game so much that I went searching for more. So I google around to see what's popular out there and I bought X-change 2, Tsuki and Snow Drop and thay all dissapoint me. X-change 2 is way too bizarre, Tsuki is just sick, and snow drop is too short and I keep getting the same ending everytime. None of them have the kind of engaging storyline that Crescendo possesses.
Are games like Crescendo and Kiminozo a once in a season thing? My friend told me another game I might like is three sisters' story, so I'm checking that out. Do you guys have any other suggestions?
Can you read Japanese or are you stuck with the few English translated titles? (perhaps you can read another language?)
America has very few good titles. There are a couple threads in the games forum about some of them. "Private Nurse" and "Kana Little Sister" are 2 mentioned there that you haven't mentioned.
I have played Kana and it was great. It's less a game than Crescendo, though. There aren't 5 or 6 girls to choose from and I guess there are only a couple majorly different endings and the rest are similar to them. It's more of a visual novel.
If you could read Japanese...oh man, the world is your oyster.

I speak Spanish. :heh:
This may sound ironic but I really don't mind playing H-games that don't have 6 or 7 girls to choose from. I found Crescendo to be very appealing because of the story. It really stirs my emotions.
I've been reading some reviews on Kana little sister and it looks great! This may be what I'm really looking for. I'm definitely buying this game.
I don't read Japanese but I would really appreciate it if you still recommend some good titles for me so that maybe in the near future if they do get released here, I'll be first in line to buy them.
Many of the great romance anime came from great games.
Never played any of the Japanes ones but if they got translated, I 'd buy Kanon in a second. I might buy it anyway, I just loved the anime that much.
AIR is supposed to be really good, KgNE, Tsukimime, I am sure someone in Japan can give a better list of good titles.
I wonder what people are saying about the new CLANNAD game.

Had the exact same thing happen to me. Though the stuff was all porn, but finally tried Crescendo to get my friend to shut up. Boy was I surprised. All I can say, is Hello Nurse! :D
If you liked Crescendo, then try Kana and Heart de Roomate. Be prepared, Kana is pretty heavy emotionally, its excellent, but can be tough. Heart de Roomate runs through like an anime, and starts off kinda silly, then gets increasingly serious. The "True" ending in Heart is a killer as well.
I reviewed both Crescendo and Heart in the Games thread, but there are some spoilers in the thread. Take a look, if you liked Crescendo, I dont think either of those two would disappoint.

Ive never played Crescendo but I would recommend the following:
Seasons of the Sakura - Think this had a pretty good story but it has been awhile since I played it. I remember they put some characters from Evangelion in it heh. I think the teacher was Misato or something and Rei Ayaname was the hardest girl to get at the end.
Nocturnal Illusions - Think of the three I liked this one the best because of its more darker story. Again, its been awhile since ive played so details are kind of hazy. You start off being hurt during a hurricane or something and end up in a mansion where your unable to leave and you have to help the other tenants I think. If you do play it, go to gamefaqs and use the walkthrough or else you end up going from area to area trying to figure out where your supossed to be. Theres some twisted stuff in it, I remember getting chills from one part with one of the characters because what happened was pretty unexpected and shocking and I don't get shocked easily :p.
GLO*RI*A - I liked this one alot, if you like replayability then it is a must. The game has like 40 endings. There wasn't much of a story if I remember though because it was so short, basically you get a job to tutor a daughter of the Gloria family while your friend is also tutoring a daughter. Wow, I made that sound absolutely dull but I remember enjoying it.
All three of those are older games so they don't have the best graphics. I think Seasons of the Sakura is a whopping 5 MEGS in size! GLO*RI*A looks the best in terms of graphics. You can read reviews of them at http://www.animetric.com, the reviews there influenced me to play each game and do a better job at talking about them than me.

Thanks a lot for the advice guys.
I just played Kana little sister. The shipping came in today and I've been playing it non-stop for six hours. I must say, its depressing as hell and this is just one of the endings. I don't feel like sleeping tonight so here I am writing this post. Hm, if they turn this into an anime I'm sure it'll be one of the saddest show ever created. But that's just me.
In the near future, I'm also going to check out Heart De Roommate. While I regret reading some of your post on the review, Arwyn, it was still really intriguing. I thought Private Nurse would be another senseless sex romp type of game but after reading the synopsis, I believe it is anything but. I'm also going to try Nocturnal Illusions as the story seems very unique. All these titles along with 3 sisters story should last a while. Damn, I'm going to totally empty my pocket now. This is money I usually spend on DVDs and XBox games. This is what happens when you find a new hobby I guess.
Gah, I'm still depressed over Kana little sister.

I did tag my reviews with spoiler tags. :)
I agree with you though about Kana, I have it, and had to put it on hold for a bit. It just got a little to emotionally intense, so I am taking a breather for a bit. There are something like six endings for Kana, and they are all pretty tough. Dont forget a box of tissues, your gonna cry like a baby on some of the endings. :)
If your trying Heart, you might want to try going through the storylines in this order;
Mamuru
Namiki side story
Yoshiko side story
Tomoe
Asumi
Asumi true ending
And keep your eyes open in the storylines, there are several little things that show up that tie back into the true ending.
As far as impact goes between Crescendo/Kana/Heart, Kana has the lead by far, but its all VERY heavy. I really liked all three, although I would have to say that for me at least, Crescendo is my number 1 pick, followed by Kana, then Heart.
Ah ha! Kana claims another victim. I was depressed for weeks. I'll have to PM you and see which ending you got. I need to bond with others who have shared the same emotional tauma, only then can the healing process begin. :)
I want to try Crescendo and Private Nurse but I have that empty pocket problem right now. :)

After having been around the block with alot of the older titles brought to the US such as Seasons, 3 Sisters, Runaway, etc.. I think I stopped playing around 4-5 years ago because of the seemingly increasingly innaneness of the titles being brought over. I think my first game was Seasons and the one I enjoyed the most b/c even without flashy graphics its had a story that actually involved me. Besides I found it hilarious that you could try to court a Rei look-a-like. Anyways I moved with other things to occupy my time but watching Shingetsutan Tsukihime and finding out that it was based off a game-title made me decide to give a second look to the genre. I picked up Kana, Chain, and Crescendo after shopping some reviews a few months ago. It was prob a bad choice to start with Chain cause its blandness made me put off playing the other 2 games indefinitely. Anyway because of sheer boredom I decided to play through Kana literally last night. Wow, definitely emotionally stirring enough for me to type up this drivel in this post and make me look online for other ppl's experiences with the games.
After unlocking every ending except 5. Yes I ended up cheating to get 1 and 3 through walkthroughs simply b/c I had expected a certain ending for the game but was disappointed. I was wondering since most reviews or posts seem to radiate around Kana or her storylines if anyone like me found the Yumi storylines to be more touching. Maybe it was b/c I was always kinda put-off from the get-go by the incestual side despite seeing the "twist" coming a mile away. Or mayb the fact that Kana only has one "true" ending for her char. Anyway totally expected an ending where Yumi&Taka, Yatu&Kana could coexist. Definitely found original ending 2, or ending 3 to be my favorite. Ending 6 is a close a second.
Anyway Kana has restored my faith enough to give Crescendo a run through. Lates - NeoManji

First off, we have special spoiler tags to hide what you wrote. [.spoiler] and close it with [./spoiler] without the "." in there.
I haven't seen the ending where she lives, I guess there is just one. I have only played throgh the game once and haven't been able to play again to get the other endings. I got ending 3, if I remember correctly. I knew Kana would die just from reviews stating how sad the game was but it still didn't prepair me for the way the game portrayed it.
I'll have to see if there are better Yumi endings, if 3 can be called a Yumi ending. She's there but you're not really into her. I don't like Yumi so I don't want to end up with her anyway. :) I want to play again and just totally snub her (I was at least polite when I played before). Is there an ending where she dies instead?

Really you didn't like ending 3? I thought it was moving how Yumi brings the shattered Taka back to reality after his loss. The normal ending "2" is the one by the grave site and the electronic memoir in the mountains. No there is no ending where Yumi dies as far as I know but I think I definitely think endings 1,4 and maybe 5 pretty much take her out of the conclusions if that is good enough for you. Endings 2,6,3, basically set Yumi up a factor for Taka's second hope for love and closure from Kana. Ending 1 is the only "official" good ending b/c Kana lives in that one but I think that demarcation is kinda silly since Kana imo doesn't have to live without making the ending worthwhile. I seriously believe ppl will understand this if they bother to open all the other endings. I still haven't bothered with ending 5. I probably won't b/c it seems to have little emphasis on Yumi. All I can say about ending 1 is that is sort of Crescendo-esque. I guess in the end the majority of players really attached themselves to Kana, eh? I dunno mayb I am odd then just felt like her char was too surreal to grasp for me at times. Yumi was definitely a char that seemed to grab me. But hell 10 year old infatuation on Taka who didn't talk to Yumi at all? I guess all the female leads have a touch of unrealistic idealism and unconditional love in this game.

I played through Nocturnal Illusions...
actually...i'll admit it...it's the only H-game i've ever managed to get ahold of (and that makes me sad :( )
The story, as you progress through, has a lot of "WTF was that?" moments
Particulary Sari, Yura, and the Mermaid...i mean...what the hell?? a MERMAID?! how do you do "this and that" to a mermaid you ask? well...
Also of note about N.I. is that it really doesn't matter what the hell you do, the game is really linear, and if you save at the right time, you can access every ending for every character -_-...seemed kinda pointless...

Well I have yet to purchase Nocturnal Illusions. I'll check into it more I suppose. I just liked the idea of a thriller type of H-game. I thought Tsuki would be something like that but it turns out to be nothing more than bondage fest.
I borrowed the Jastusa memorial collection from my friend and I finally get to play 3 sister's story. I must say this is another classic case of moral ambiguity. It was all good till the ending. The conclusion for this game pisses me off to no end. Even more than Kiminozo ever did.
The guy who caused the main character and his family so much pain comes back to lead a normal life? Look I know his brother is evil and everyhing and there is a line to how far revenge can go. But come on!! There is also a line to how much you can forgive. After the mofo caused the main character's father to commit suicide, his mother to work herself to death, and his brother so much torment that he went insane and finally torched himself, he's just going to welcome him back?? Is it really his place to even forgive? And now they're actually going to live like neighbors and the main character will eventually marry into the family and they will all live happily ever after. How disgusting. I would never want a pervert like him as a brother.
Anyway, those are my thoughts. I wanted to take my mind off Kana for a while but instead I'm now feeling pretty moody. I'm sure I'll get over it quick, and then its back to being depressed over Kana. *Sigh*
From your descriptions, I guess I got ending 2 in Kana. I could have sworn it was 3. I don't have the CD handy to load it up and check. :(
It's not that I didn't like the ending, I just didn't like Yumi. She basically rapes you. Gah, leave me alone. I wanted nothing to do with her but the game had its own plans.

Ya i can see that I guess. But I dunno no matter how you play it up to that pt I think Taka himself should prob not be falling for Kana yet. There is definitely development up to that pt but nothing to warrant a full out refusal of Yumi's advances in the hotel. I mean you did have a crush on her for a while, the only reason why u did refuse her was b/c of her own apparent refusal of u in the first place, plus come on ur drunk and a horny college kid. Its not really rape. Just that the game doesn't take the human factor of the player into account neh? Cause players prob had already fallen for Kana way b4 that event. Anyway if you open up the other endings like ending 3 you might appreciate her more its called "Out of the Maze". I guess I liked Yumi cause I purposely played Kana the first few times trying to be a good bro but avoiding anything to messy with Kana. And in terms of the game ya you can only avoid doing anything with Yumi in maybe one ending i think which was #1 but I could be wrong. Also I think the game wants Yumi to be a setup for Taka to realize the strength of his feelings for Kana despite having a physica relationship (and a good relationship in some endings) with Yumi ie. weighing out sex over his feelings for Kana. In all the endings Taka inevitably drops Yumi b/c of his relationship with his sis. Anyway I guess I will be the only holding the banner for the Yumi fanclub =).
As for NI, well its better than most of what had been released by JAST back in the day. Seasons of Sakura is still a better game even though its older. It was kinda of a challenge to actually end up with all the characters if I remember correctly esp the Rei clone which still makes me laugh when I think about it right now. As for thriller type games, I heard Divi-Dead is kinda like that though I never picked it up. - NeoManji

Well in real life, if the genders were reversed and she was the one drunk, it would be rape. :twitch:
Yeah, Yumi serves a major purpose in Taka's relationship with Kana. The best part is when Yumi walks in on you kissing Kana (why they did that with their parents in the other room and Taka's girlfriend on the way over, is beyond comprehension).
Haha, take that Yumi, here's what I think of you. :)
At least I can think back on the story and laugh a little bit. I've come far from where the game left me after I finished playing it. Must be time to play it again, then. :)

Divi-dead! I forgot about that. That game was really good, freaky story if I remember and had some disturbing scenes. You play as a student who gets transfered to a campus by his uncle, who is also the dean of the school. Its a distinguished school where the students live on campus, but students have been acting strange and violently lately. The catch for getting into the school for free is you have to spy on the other students and try to find out what is causing them to become violent. I can't believe I forgot about this, the graphics and story were both great, it had a fantastic atmosphere to it I thought as well.

Oi ya. I just did... wow.
Ya trying to decide whether Yuka, Ayame, or her's hit me worse... damn all rough choices. On second thought I think Yuka beats all the others hands down. Ok maybe not hands down but seriously that is just a sad sad story. That girl had nothing... literally nothing. I think i was tiny bit putoff by Miyu cause she looked like she was 12 the whole time. So Yuka edges her out. Hmm but in general prob enjoy Kaori followed by Kaho's the most. Kaho line with the typical yet complicated teenage relationship angst w/ accompanied triangles was nice to deal with esp with the darker plotlines i dealt with later. Besides she does so many cute things imo b/c of her love for Ryo. Ya holding off for 2 years does seem strange but lets be serious here. Girls usually suck at intiating things. Ryo ain't much better either. In the end Kaori's was nice b/c it had a nice mixture of angst and darker elements for me. I found her inner dialogue to be really cute too. And kinda the diachotemy btw her adult and girly side to fun. One question ppl may can answer for me. Why does Kaho kick herself in the "good" ending that she used her friends? I mean I can see her maybe using Kyoko but how did she use Ryo? I remember vaguely her saying to Ryo that she used his feelings for her but when? When she initially recruited him? Ryo didn't kno her before she walked up to him so she couldn't have known before hand that she could used his feelings as an adv to get him to join the club. And afterwards, she had already begun to like him so she isn't really using him is she?
Anyway Crescendo was definitely worth playing too bad these games only seem to come around every 4 years or so for me to enjoy =). Oh yea Tron those comments about Yumi hurt really. lol =( *sigh* - NeoManji

Yep, Crescendo was actually the first ero-game title I played, after a friend of mine bugged me to death to try it. I was pleasantly surprised by how well done it was, particularly the writing.
Kaori's story is my favorite, mostly for the same reasons you had. :)
Kaho's story was good, although I played through hers last, and it really felt kind of simplistic after going through Ayame's and Yuka's storylines.
Kyoko's story was just nice, a sweet, pretty decent change of pace from all the heavy storylines.
In regards to which was the most effective story, I would say Yuka's was the most angst filled, and well done. I did like the way the way the writers kept peeling of layers to show more and more of what was going on. Well done, but tough.
Ayame's story made me pretty uncomfortable, and the "good" ending path was REALLY unpleasant to pick. The girl has some serious issues though, the story was very well done, but...... *shudder*
Miyu's story caught me off guard, I started figuring something different was going on but;
When its all over, and her mother says that she died with a smile, apparently having a HAPPY dream, and her mother is staring at you intently.... wow, that one really got under my skin. And the closing scene, with Ryo holding the picture and crying while her ghost watches from the piano. MAN that got me!
Now I just have to go back and try and finish Kana...... :D

Ya go finish Kana ;p. Just don;t hate Yumi =(... as for Crescendo...
Well Ayame's story is pretty yea unpleasant in some ways. But i guess it ain't too bad if you hold onto the fact that they ain't bro and sis. Just yea kinda *icky* to get to the good ending. Miyu's ending is pretty heartbreaking. Kinda saw it coming a mile away though. I mean esp with Ryo goin why don't u wanna see Kaho? Anyway I think I was just worn out by the time I got to her. I mean even when I decided to see her bad ending just couldn't feel anymore. Oh yea what made it even sadder was that Ryo couldn't even remember the time he spent with her. He just lets the magnitude of this unknown sadness just hit him he hears the entertainer. Yuka's bad ending btw really sucked... In fact if you think about it Yuka's the only one were if you don't make a change in her life it really kinda goes to shit. Kaori might be stuck in a loveless marriage I guess. And Miyu would die a lonely death I guess. Anyway finish Kana and post what ya think. I think I may have liked this game a lil more than Kana.

I just played Kana a few weeks ago for the first time as well, after reading a lot about it online. And despite knowing pretty much what to expect (having delved a bit deeper in my research than I should have), I was still completely wrecked!
I got Ending 5 the first time (with Kana's diary). With a couple of minor variations, I got Endings 4 and 6 in fairly short order. Ending 5 is still the saddest to me, though.
Ending 3 really disturbed me! It was so haunting.
Ending 2 was sad
with Kana's messages left on the pendant, showing her fear of death. I felt like an utter bastard for not having prepared her for it, as in the intellectual endings.
I deliberately left Ending 1 for last because I wanted something happy to walk away with. But did I get something happy? Not really!
In fact, having Kana live and walk away was one of the most hurtful things I had to go through in the game! While I understood the logic of it, I just couldn't stop hurting.
I had to write a continuation of Ending 1 for myself, to try to 'fix' things. And I guess I'm just another Kana-obsessed fanatic, because the stories just keep coming. It's therapy, I guess.
It's good to know that I'm not alone. :)

Oh I haven't bothered opening ending 5 at all its worth it then i guess?
Ending 3 though pyschological haunting in parts was one of my favorite b/c I like Yumi and she does so much to bring Taka back to reality. Ending 2 is the first one I ever got and probably still the best for me. Bittersweet ending full of loss but a chance for Taka to move on. Ending 1, lol, very Crescendo-esque if u ask me.

Endings 4, 5 and 6 are all very similar. Basically, you have Ending 4. Add another scene, and you have Ending 5. Add *another* scene to that, and you have Ending 6. So if you've seen Ending 6, there's no need to go back and get Ending 5.
(The word 'ending' makes absolutely no sense to me when I look at it now. Semantic satiation at its best.)
But yes, the intellectual endings (4, 5 and 6) are sad and sweet in their own way.
Yumi only features in Ending 6, though, so go for that one if you're a Yumi fan. :)

I've opened everyone up already since except number 5. Could have swore that Yumi was in ending 4. Probably just imagining things. I kinda rushed through all the endings b/c i expect to see one where Taka hooks up with Yumi, and Kana ends up living and dating Yuta. Btw does everyone agree with me (even though I am not the biggest Kana fan) that ending 1 sucks? Dunno just blah ending for me. Anyway i think i am the only Yumi fan =). - NeoManji

I don't think Ending 1 sucks. I do think it's bittersweet
and not as happy as it could have been. But I think it would have been out of character to have one unqualified 'happy' ending. It would somehow lessen the impact of the other endings.
That didn't stop me writing a bunch of fanfics to address what I saw as the inadequacies of Ending 1. If anyone wants to read them, let me know and I'll post the URL.
I think it's fairly well established in the game that Kana doesn't like Yuta. Poor sod. I mean, Taka used to tease Kana as well, and she likes him!
I always found it strange that Yumi was so passionate about pursuing Taka. It seemed as if she didn't think of anyone else but him for all her years in high school. What did he do to deserve it?
