there is my compilation of space anime from 1979 to 2003 that I can think of right now. I definitely have more than this, but I've seen so much anime that I have a mental block.

You forgot one kj1980.......Nadesico. anyway sensei kakashi03, even though Nadesico is licensed, if you like gundam and stellvia, you will probably like Nadesico. It has the same director and some of the same producers as stellvia. You can probably get it very cheap, the box set is $90, but you can probably get it used for quite a bit less. As for unlicensed, I can't really add anything except Scrapped Princess. It isn't really set in space, but if you're a sci fi fan, give it a chance, you'll probably enjoy it.
While I haven't seen it, from what I've heard, Planete's is in space.
Have to put in one licensed recommendation, though I'm guessing we're giving you too much...
