I hope there isn't a thread like this laready, searched but did not find any. If there is, then forgive me.
Anyway, i can't really decide on which is better. The first had a lot of action with Gauron and all. The second one is more comedy oriented. What to choose, what to choose.
And Sauske being smacked by Chidori all the time, what u think?
What do u think??

I think the two are impossible to compare, as they stand in leagues of their own: Realism Mecha and HS Situational Comedy. I couldn't say which is better, since they each do it in different ways-- i.e. jaw hanging after some vicious AS action or laughing to death after a classroom disaster.
Fumoffu, as it was obviously geared towards it, beat out season 1 in the comedy department, but as expected, Season 1 blows away Fumoffu in terms of storyline and drama.
Fumoffu, hands down. Season 1 is too ecchi, I don't care for mecha battles, and the story was pretty poorly done. Fumoffu cut out all that crap and what was left was gold.
Not that I don't like Season 1, it's just no where near as enjoyable.
I'd say I enjoyed Fumoffu more, and I watched it first. When I later watched FMP! (first season), I thought it was pretty decent. What it beat fumoffu at was the progression of the character's relationships. We see more changes in Sousuke/Kaname/Tessa than we see in Fumoffu, which is a fragmented collection of comedy bits.
I have to say that Fumoffu's directing, scripting and such is pretty average. Not bad enough to disgust me but enough to make me cringe many times per episode. I really don't know whether its the mediocre skills of the production team, or the limited production budget that made it seem so... average. I kept watching out of interest in the relationships and also Gaul, who I thought was a *little* captivating. Overall, it could have been much, much more. I certainly thought that with an expanded budget, plus tighter scripting and better direction it would have been a real gem.. Oh well. I probably won't watch it again, but I'll watch Fumoffu again..
Fumoffu had this incredibly style to its humor, which really kept me laughing in spasms. The whacking style is really hilarious.. :D But the character interaction was really unsatisfying. I couldn't stop watching because it was so funny and entertaining, but at the end you don't really feel much progress in the relationships. I wonder whether the budget for Fumoffu was larger than FMP! per episode.. But I guess not, the animation didn't impress me as well.
Ah. The constraints and the waste.. =|. I'll probably just read the manga to find out what continues to happen.. or read the book translation. If a third season is announced.. I sure hope they buck up.

Both are really good, I would suggest watching FMP first as it's meant to be and the Fumoffu is just a really funny and lighter series (no real plot or anything). FMP is a great series, and I'm not really one to like mecha anime, there's just so much character and relationship development, it would be a crime to miss it, plus you get a better background on everything going on.
But if you want pure comedy and funny characters without much of a plot or substance, just watch Fumoffu.

I'd say 2nd season is better, but i agree with Jenichan though. Watch the first season, so you wont get lost in the second season.
FPM made me smile. Fumoffu made me laugh out loud.

you HAVE to watch the first one to fully appreciate the genius of the second one.

I'd have to say I liked FMP better than Fumoffu. As much as I like comedy, I like drama better, and FMP has both. I'm also not a big fan of stand alone episodes, I like the plot to keep moving forward with each episode.
And what really drives me nuts sometimes is when two people that obvously like eachother never get together! :D (Completely off topic :topicoff: ) FMP isn't the only anime like this, I dunno if it has anything to do with popularity or public acceptance in Japan, but it would just be so satisfying to once in a while see two main characters in a mainstream anime get together and fall in love. :p

The first season was immensely enjoyable, with a pretty good storyline and entertaining action, but that said Fumoffu (second season) is in a league of it's own.
The second season is just pure comedic enjoyment, and while there really isn't a storyline that progresses anywhere you don't even care when watching it. It can take you from the rock bottom of KGNE blues and have you laughing your arse off.
So for me FMP was an anime that I enjoyed, while I would put FMP:F as one of the top animes around.

I have a new question:
I started reading my daughters FMP manga and I was wondering how many episodes of the first season actually aired?
I understand how different they are but we are getting different information from different web sites as to how many eps we can look forward to.
Does anyone also know how many eps are in a DVD?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.... the only info I found on this forum was how many eps there were for second season. Those were like soooo funny :heh:

There are 24 episodes for the first season. I think that there are 6DVDs in total, but I could be wrong. This is something that you can easily do your own research on.
I did it for you anyways, there are 7 DVDs in total for 24 episodes.

for me FMPF is better than FMP... I think the political and mecha parts of the original FMP are just blah, too serious while too unrealistic, and the changing between comedy and seriousness of the show doesn't connect too well, so the highschool part of the original FMP is what I like best in it. Thus FMPF is a dream come true for me ;)

I really liked the political/mecha and serious parts of the first series... I found that there was a good mix of comedy and seriousness... and it was really entertaining... but... Fumoffu was pretty damn entertaining too... though, the Sagara jokes can only go so far before being played out... Fumoffu is good but definitely not better than the first series...

Fumoffu is much better. The first one is average at best. The story is awful, with plot devices being ignored and a main enemy who just won't freaking die.

well, different people got different tastes... but then I think the political/mecha parts in FMP are just too ridiculous to be considered realistic while too serious to be brushed off as parody... I mean, what's with that KGB guy? what's his purpose anyway? and a single cruise missile blowing up an entire base? is that a nuke or is the whole base built with paper :twitch: It feels like they try to do something like Ghost in the Shell political struggle, but instead put Star Wars stuff into it :p
the main villain, though, just compete against Heero Yuy in terms of coming out of big explosions alive :heh:

Well, I don't know about the first season being SO bad as you describe it. I thought it attained a very high level of polish animation-wise, as well as plot-arc wise. But the sequencing/putting together of the plot-arcs was not very well, but if you've read the novels you'll know that the writer Gatoh switches between heavy/light moods quite often, so it's not much of a suprise. I liked the first series personally, although I thought of it as quite mediocre in terms of plot and such; there was nothing really outstanding about that. However, I grew attached to the characters, certainly :)
Fumoffu is incredible. Good animation, but what's really wonderful is the techniques like editing and camera, which are so spick-spank fast and refreshing. It's like chop chop chop, everything goes by nice and tightly. Had an incredibly good time with Fumoffu ^_^.. but it has less development than the first series, I thought. :p
I enjoyed both. Each has it its own merits, they are both great.

honestly, people who like HS comedy/romance will tell you Fumoffu
and people who like big guns n crap(see you can tell where my bias is) will tell you Panic.
Now what do you think I'll pick?
duh Fumoffu. Panic did make me a believer of mech series though.
Interesting enough, I think fumoffu was easier to please because of it's comedy. I see alot of people picking it.
Even though it is the favorite, you can't compare it.
Now Fumoffu vs Love Hina?
omg that would be too hard. Like Old school vs New School but the old school was 24 eps and did it better(hehe like always huh).
But the new school has better animation quality and some of the modern jokes are funny.
Man that would make a great thread, where could I put it?(tell me, dont do it, if it hasnt been done I'd like the credit please!).

Love Hina isn't old school...
Space Cat Full House (a series amazingly similar to Love Hina) on the other hand is 'old school' as it predates the former by almost a decade. Also, comparing the two series would probably be futile since they're of two different genres (FMP's focus is action/adventure while LH's focus is romance/comedy).
Anyway, as Airnest said "I enjoyed both. Each has it its own merits, they are both great." However, I prefered the second since I'm not the greatest mecha fan.

well, I think the difference between FMP 1 and 2 for me is that, FMP1 is a decent mecha anime, but there are plenty other better mecha animes out there, while FMP2 is simply one of the greatest comedy show out there. There are few really "instant-classic" or genius scenes in FMP1, the best arc IMO is definitely the Pakistan arc, but even that part is just above average for me. However FMP2 is full of totally classic jokes and parodies, there are many genius scenes that can make one watch again and again and laugh each time.

First is the best, of course.
Best mixture of comedy and action. Sousuke's cluelessness is somewhat justified. And you can always pretend that the other series don't exist, so Tessa would still have a chance with Sousuke...

First if i were u i would go with the original series FMP since it is first and it gives u a good backround on the characters and what the story is about.
Any ways i truely like TSR the best bc of the action scenes were amazing, which i thought and how Sousuke solved everything at the end of the series. Well that is my choice.

Fumoffu!! Super light hearted and fun as heck to watch! I actually watched it before I watched the first season but it all went ok for me :) cept for the fact that I wished there was more Kurz and Mao in the fumoffu as well.
My Pick would be FUMOFUU its sweet the plot and chracter development goes now wehre but its worth the laughs esp the SagaraXKaname chemistry is awesome . Also Kurz is at his Ecchi Best :D

Yeah even though FUMOFUU had no plot progression it was better IMO as there were more number of chracters featured which was good for the show . Also Mao and Kurz in civilian mode make the show much more intresting .

i can tell you that i didnt like TSR For the simple fact that they didnt kiss or ANYTHING at the end! it pisses me off. the thing that keeps me coming back to this show is the suspense between Souskae and Kaname. but i cant choose between FMP and Fumoff, so ill pick fumoffu but not by alot...

In the anime department, definently TSR, kept me hooked all the way through, no dull moment. Then would be Fumoffu which was well doen and funny as hell with FMP close after but being a bit messed up.
COMO is definently my favourite chapter though.

Just realized that I never posted in this thread. Well then... The Second Raid is by FAR the best installment in the series so far, at least it is imo. It contains all the aspects that I look for in an anime, and I really enjoyed the fact that there were less comedy. #2 on my list is Full Metal Panic!... even though I didn't like everything that Gonzo did with it. Fumoffu is the "least good" part of the FMP-saga so far imo. People usually frown upon comments like these, but to be honest, I didn't find Fumoffu that funny. I never liked sidestory-stuff before, all I want is main plot. Don't get me wrong, I really loved Fumoffu, but compared to the main plot-seasons it's not even in the same league. :heh:

wow i like tsr the best with that ending in the arbalest lol
I must agree, TSR is the best! Just because of 1 character Chidori, in all the both the 1st season and TSR she is acyually the hero. It's her spirit to never give up, like when she and sagaraa had to go throught the first fight and sgaraa told her to run while they stay and hold the front for her, then she just says "NO!!!........", ot's the same in TSR's scene where she goes to Hong Kong and tell him to come back, she pulls him toghter then he becomes the hero, that's just great!

I like all 3 series, but Fumoffu had the best humour. ;)
The eps with Kaname's note and the Girl hunting are my favs. And of course the episode with the rugby team. I do own the DVDs and..... the (german) subs were totally uncensored!!! ehehehe :naughty: It's really odd hearing Sousuke say such naughty things.
But I really enjoyed it. :heh:
TSR was great, too. Awesome animation. The same for season #1.

You know what! I found my self really like Fumoffu, It's killing me totally. But, I still love the others.
I had seen Fumoffu in two language, Indonesia for the first and English-Sub for the later. When I was watching it in the first time (It's around 2004 or 3 years later), I never watched the 1st season.
Now, I had seen the 1st and the TSR, but still I do like both of them.
FUMOFFU IS THE ONE I LOVE MOST!
Btw, Please give me the censored words when Sousuke was teaching the Rugby. I really didn't know. The words were totally censored for the sub that I downloaded. Thx.

No problem. ISWICD. It's also censored in the english version of the DVD, both dub and sub. I need to translate it first, tomorrow hopefully. :)

My ranking of the seasons:
1.) Tessa OVA (Okay, it's not really a full season, but it's the episode I like most...)
2.) Season 1
3.) Fumoffu
4.) (Empty)
5.) Second Raid (Sorry, just one good episode (the haircut) is simply not enough for a place directly after the other seasons.)
Not sure if more FMP seasons will come, but better no new season than another 'Second Raid' style season.

It is so hard to choose a favorite, honestly. Each has its own distinct flavor...FUMOFFU is the funniest, and the one most centered on Kaname and Sosuke, but TSR is the most connected and thorough, the smoothest run and plotted of the three (the first felt like three segments jumbled).
I might have to support FUMO

I'd have to say TSR is my favorite. It may have been short, but I liked how it showed what Kaname and Sousuke were like apart. And I thought it was pretty funny to see Chidori all paranoid after Sousuke left, but when he is there, she scolds him. The first season was pretty good at the first half, but I didn't enjoy the last half as much. The part where they were in the plane had me interested the whole way, though.

While I understand the series centers around Sousuke, not Kaname, per se, the mission portion of the first season is almost...skippable...in how it fits into season one's story arc. It almost feels shoved in.

there seems to be a trend here that the series get better as they progress... (good omen for a possible 4th season....*prays nightly*)
but I would have to say that TSR was my favorite season, as it had the drama and character development, still lots of great action, as well the start of Kaname and Sousuke realizing their feelings for one another.

Its hard to say, I like the FMP! and TSR as much as each other. TSR continues straight on from FMP! so for me its hard to choose. I like Fumoffu a lot but its not quite as good as the other series even with the coolness that is Sousuke dressed up in a Bonta costume.

Wait, have I not responded to this thread yet?
HOW CAN THIS BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE?
*Ahem* Anyway, I have to say, hands down, FUMOFFU is my favorite. The other ones were thouroughly enjoyable as well, but FUMOFFU had me in stitches almost constantly. I'm a sucker for comedy. :D
I thought none of the seasons were bad, but TSR is easily my favorite. Great action, story, and character development with enough comedy to keep things from deviating too far from the FMP "feel". It was great to see Sosuke and Kaname break out of their typical protector/dependent molds and become stronger as a result.
The other two seasons are closer, but I still have to say that I enjoyed the first season more than Fumoffu. Fumoffu was hilarious and all, but it lacked the overall story and character development that the other two seasons have, which are two things I crave.
Now if/when the fourth season comes out, I might have to bump TSR down a notch to second-favorite. ;)

It's great to know that there ARE people out there who think like me. =)
I usually feel like part of a tiny minority when I say that Fumoffu is the FMP-installment I enjoyed the least. ^^
I recently got around to watching The Second Raid and Fumoffu, and I would have to say that the Second Raid is by far the best of the three. The first season was pretty average in my eyes, it was entertaining, but nothing extraordinary, that goes for both plot, animation and art. Fumofuu was funny at times, but it didn't really strike me as outrageously hilarious.
The Second Raid is a whole different story, though. The animations and quality was gorgeous, and combined with the introduction of some new characters, gave the show a refreshing new look. I thoroughly enjoyed TSR, it felt more serious than the first season too, somehow.
I couldn't resist Tessa in TSR either, she looked stunning. Granted, I was head over heels for her the first season as well. :)

I really liked all 3 series, and I feel that they each have some unique feature to them, that isn't found quite as much in the other ones. To me, each have something very special about them, and when you combine all 3 series, FMP becomes an awesome anime (as if each series wasn't already awesome on their own anyways :p ).

I haven't watched Fumoffu yet but if my assumption that it's a comedy is correct then I think my opinion of the 2 most similar seasons should be adquate. I honestly felt like the first season wasn't good. It was trying to be a robot anime, a high-school anime and a love story all at the same time but didn't pull it off. As a result, I found that all 3 areas felt disjointed when taken together as a whole. The Second Raid was much better in my opinion and managed to wrap up the 3 aspects of the anime in a much better package than the first season did with half the episodes.

My fav FMP series has to be TSR
- It shows a darker side to the light hearted storyline which really was a breath of fresh air after Fumoffu . Although the 2nd was a gd series it lacked any real char development and each episode was more of a complete story in itself - no episodes followed on ... no continueity. I loved its comedic value tho - to make it clear i'm not saying it's bad or anything.
- The first series I would say comes 2nd as it combine all genres together to make a larger - more vaired series ( although 24 eps makes it viable to fillers etc).
- I'm more an action / fighting guy and TSR offered the most realistic ( for mech combat and well animated fight scenes ( not just AS but hand to hand too).
- I also like the dark humour aspect to things therefore Gates was teh man for me TBH. I've even done a top 5 FMP char AMV with the greatest dark humour , kickass fighter , intelligant villian at the top :)
- My only criticism of TSR was that it was too short and !!! leaves us on such a high cliffhanger we immediately want a new series. It was like - enemy = Amalgam , there're no where near destroyed but wht the hell we will end the series there. I mean come on! It would be fine if they had finised TSR there THEN followed it on rapidly .... but no ..... Well there's my rant about 'we all want more' , I know everyone else does .
fumoffu cuz is that funny...the other fmp animes are good too but fumoffu is the BEST
i'm actually more into the school life, kaname/sousuke interaction, tessa/sousuke interaction, than the rest of what fmp is about, i'm not saying i dont like the arm-slave mayhem and villian plots; they are good too but the previous is my favorite part of this show

The villains stank in FMP S1 and TSR. Deranged sick people aren't my cup of tea. There was some good action but they stuffed far too many cliches into the action (Chidori runs down a STRAIGHT passage down the sub. A professional trained mercenary shoots at her but misses every shot is one huge cliche).
FMP TSR easily betters season 1 in my opinion because I found there was better character interaction and understanding between Chidori and Sousuke. My fav however is Fumoffu because the slice in FMP is simply stupendously funny which is what kept me watching the series. The battles/actions are a little dry and lack "something" but the slice is extreme!

so most evil people that have messed up ideas on morals and how they should carry themselves, tend to be deranged or mentally imbalanced in some way , so it only makes sense to have them like that. There is nothing wrong with the bad guys in any of the series.
and the fact that it was raining hard, windy, and your on top of a rather large building with fog and such has some affect on visibility, so yes some of the shots should not have missed, but it has to be somewhat cliche otherwise u want to kill of kaname? pls dont even pull out cliche bull crap. Every anime or movie has some sort of cliche, so u must not like anything then? but its ur opinion.
The art of TSR was immaculate
How they portray Kaname's and Sousuke's dependency on each other TRULY shows how much they care for one another, it was romance and drama to the extreme.
Every episode was great, perhaps perfect, but by far eps. 6-13 were the greatest succession of episodes, no anime can compare. how the characters acted and reacted towards what they experienced was perfect. You got to see how Sousuke, Kaname, and Tessa are so deeply connected and how each of then explode emotionally!!!!!!!!! and how these problems they face make then react either beneficially or negatively.
And near the end of the series, how sousuke broke free of his "dog" mold and began speaking what was on his mind, how he patched things up with Tessa, and how he WANTED to hug kaname when she was crying on his chest....... the ending scene on the train was perfect, i wish that scene could last forever it was amazing.
TSR is by far the best season of FMP and the best anime ever, it has everything, art, drama, romance, action, plot, character development, etc.
Now we just have to wait for the next installment, Mr. Silver will be a great villain.... the trials that await sousuke, kaname, and tessa will be unreal, this next season NEEDS TO COME OUT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I like them both, but Fumoffu wins it for me its just so funny. The first one was good but Im not big on mecha......btw someone said the first one was Ecchi....i dont see how it's ecchi?

Ha , yeah it seems Sousuke is beginning to 'look towards the future' as it were. Your right , the last scene was fitting , but one must beg the question , why didn;t we get more in TSR ? or 'It was too short'
Yeah , TSR has everything , although it takes the focus away from school life alittle and concentrates on Mithril
Too true , Silver will be a gd bad guy . I just hope we see a little more dialogue between Sagara and Leonard in the anime .... which I hope will come soon !!!
The art of TSR was immaculate
Too true , I loved the 1st series , but TSR art made it seem insignificant in comparison

hahah teh2nddrunner knows whats up LOL yes, i wonder how he will act when Leonard tells him he kissed kaname (you know this will be brought up to make sousuke mad... "Kaname and I, what a pair we would make. her soft and beautiful lips... how i wish to kiss them again" or something like that. HULK SMASH <=====Sousuke!!!!)
short yes, but i think it finished everything it needed, and was not spotty with it. i felt it was jam packed with emotional goodness, action, plot, etc. adn they delivered all of it and finished it superbly... and obviously they would leave Mr.Silver open adn teh feelings of kaname and sousuke open as well....... oh how the fog that is FMP thickens *shivers*

I don't think Leonard's going to be so much a bad guy, I see him more helping Mithril in the end.
Well so far, we know Leonard actually succeeds in kidnapping Kaname, a fair bit later Mr Gold(or possibly or amalgam, not too sure on Amalgams structure), wants Leonard dead. They attempt to assassinate him anyways. However from what I've read, new AS's that are better then M9s in every way are piloted by Leonard's people. If Leonard joined with Mithril, they'd have the support of his new Eligors, his small AS's(Alastors IIRC), and over all Leonard's whispered abilities which would combine well with Tessa, Kaname and Mira. Meanwhile Amalgam, unless they have other whispereds are left with zilch. in the end I think it will be Amalgam making an enemy of Leonard which will be their downfall. Also Sousukes Laveathen and Al are a one man army in terms of combat.

OMG I want that so bad. HULKSMASH!SOUSUKE would be soooo awesome and satisfying to see. XD
I really enjoyed all of the seasons. I personally don't think Season 1 was trying to be the stereotypical high-school, mecha, or romance that many people thought it was. I thought FMP was its own original thought and creation. If people want more comedy or school-life then watch fumoffu or read the short stories. XD
I really liked the artwork and action in TSR. Kyoani did an AWESOME JOB WITH IT. They managed to fit alot into only a few episodes. I think it's my favorite only because the feelings and emotions seemed so much stronger. Characters were out of their typical roles and comfort zones.
Now I want a season 4. XD

Autumn, your a smart girl xD agreed, the emotional highs and lows were unreal which just made the series that much MORE ENJOYABLE!!!! personally tho,i think the next season with Mr. Silver will be even more dramatic and overwhelming.
and teh point you made about it not being a typical hs drama etc, i think that is by far one of the best observations that noone has pointed out, until now, i agree 110% with your statement!!!
btw live in your garage, oh man that must suck! lol xD

I don't think I've ever laughed as much watching an anime as I did watching Fumoffu. Once KyoAni stepped in, the animation quality became spectacular.
As for the first season, it was okay but not that great IMO. The fight scenes were a bit bland, i.e. the Lambada driver fights in FMP! were just alot of pushing in contrast to those in TSR, which involved quite a bit of action. There were some points during the first FMP where I really wanted to punch something because of how stupid some parts were.
This was really close between the last 2 seasons but my vote goes to TSR. Breathtaking animation, excellent fight sequences, and a nice mix of humor.
I thought the serious seasons were okay (TSR being about 1.75 times better than season 1) by virtue of the good story and character development (particularly in TSR), but since I'm not into mechas and that sort of stuff I liked fumoffu the best.

I would say Fumoffu, but the lack of Tessa and kurz is unsatisfying. Not to mention it only focuses on Kaname and Sousuke, which gets boring easily...That said, I did enjoy Fumoffu a lot though!
Season 1 was okay - liked it enough to watch season 2. Season 2 was MONEY all round. I couldn't have asked for more. Overall though, Fumoffu is the stuff I can watch again and again or just pop in the DVD player for a random ep to get my FMP fix.
Fumoffu easily wins me over.

The Second Raid for Me.
Fumoffu wins easily. I still haven't got around to finishing up the last few episodes of TSR, so I'd rank them Fumoffu >>>> Season 1 >>>> TSR.
Sousuke's antics are easily FMP's strongest point. The story and the mecha action is good, but it simply doesn't compare to the show's comedy. Fumoffu focuses on the comedy much more than the other two series do, so it wins.
For me it's the first season, it's just the perfect balance between them all in my opinion.
FMP! -> Fumoffu -> Second Raid. That's my order.

TSR > FMP!. Although IMO they're really close. Half a > maybe. I prefer KyoAni's pacing and execution of the plot though the characterization and production values for both were excellent.
I can't really compare Fumoffu fairly with the other 2, simply because it's a whole different genre. It focuses a lot lot LOT more on comedy and doesn't really have a plot. Nevertheless, for me it triumphs TSR and FMP! because compared to its peers, it's one of the best comedic animes out there, IMHO.

1: TSR = Character development of sousuke and chidori was absolutely priceless. To see sousuke throw an emotional fit as he did and pursue what he believed in and not just follow orders was heartmoving.
That hair cutting scene = incredibly touching.
The car chase scene with melissa and blonde guy (in about ep 5) - awesome
TSR put in elements of fumoffu and the first series in a compact 13 ep run, it remains to be the best for me <3
2: Fumoffu (the first exposure to FMP for me, so naturally a classic)
3: 1st series: Not a major fan of mecha and seeing as i viewed fumofuu first, it raised my expectations for something light, so i struggled to finish it sadly, although it was a good series.

My personal favorite was TSR. I liked the animation of it better then the other two seasons, and the feeling of it is much deeper.
