I know I love to take pictures of things, and I suspect most of you do too. This thread is to serve so that we can share photographs that we took and like a lot.

I will start with:

A lovely woody scene there from EsperChld, with a beautiful 'smooth' effect on the water that I like a lot.

This is more down to Earth (well actually maybe Sun/Moon really, ^^). As I'm an Astro boy you'll see a fair few like these)

This is one of my personal favourites of the partial eclipse earlier on this year. Had to be up at 4am to see it but it was lovely to watch.

Click on the image to see the original. Warning : It is very large!!

Oooh ... nice. I like the varying densities of foliage as the fog consumes thems. And you even got some of the birds into the picture.
Have you tried hooking your camera too a telescope?

Actually I do. There no full size (unless you count the film size which is 6cmx4.5cm), I can make scans WELL over your monitor size. PM me with details and I will see what I can do for you.

^^, It was by sheer luck those Ravens flew into the scene, but it does add to the effect doesn't it?

I can connect the camera to my Binoculars, but not to my rather pitiful telescope sadly. This would have been nice to do here but from my precarious position on the rooftop, it would have been a tad dangerous!!

Dark_Voodoo: I love all landscape photos and the fact you have a little foilage foreground adds nicely to the image, and it's very rugged too. Lovely water colours. Have you a large version? I'll bring some mountains into the fray myself soon enough. :)

Cheers Dark_Voodoo!

Since we're on the first page of this photography thread, I'll try to reel in the viewers with the "wow" factor :) (or maybe not, you decide :D )

Here's another personal favourite. This time it's a shot of Mont Blanc, taken from the highest accessible part of La Grande Motte on the French-Italian border. Pretty nippy up there at 3500m (~11500 feet), fortunately it was spring ^_^ .

Once again, click on image for a 'larger' version, although this is still half the size of the original.

Esperchld once again stuns with another excellent woodland shot. :D

Very colourful Hellychan! Sunset shots are also a favourite of mine, and there's nothing wrong with backyard shots at all - that first solar eclipse pic was from my backyard (well okay, it was from the roof but it's the same thing :p) and I have plenty of others.

We're presenting quite a picturesque first page, that's for sure :)

Here's something a bit different and definitely down to Earth, but more colourful... and certainly not at 3.5Km :heh: This is also taken from a precarious position, only a 70m fall.....

Nice shot there EtherNEZ, a bit higher than most of the places I have been to take pictures. I think the highest cliff I have taken pictures from was about 80 or so meters. However, next highest one was about 30m (that one tried to take my life, but only succeeded in sending me to urgent care).

Looks like some good water down there for relaxing in, and some good rocks for climbing.

gravitation

Babak is rite they all look very nice  awww i hope to see stuff like that sum day, i liked that one with the little trickle (well not really little) going down the rocks ^_^

Esperchld
2003-11-04, 19:02
Actually little trickle is right. That is an eight (IIRC) second exposure. There isn't really much water coming down that waterfall. Shame I wasn't there a week earlier when we had massive flooding in that area.

A small request to those who post their pictures here:
I am curious about what type of equipment you use(d) to make those pictures. Please include the camera model and some short specs for your cameras :)

Thanks,
JAF

Esperchld
2003-11-04, 19:09
I used a Mamiya 645 Super for all three shots. The lenses used were 150mm f/3.5, 80mm f/2.8, and an 45mm f/2.8 respectively (set to 32, 22, and 22 repectively as well). Film for all 3 shots is Fuji Velvia shot with an EI of 40. I don't remember the exact exposure times for all three shots.

I don't know if that is helpful to you or not.

EtherNEZ
2003-11-04, 19:14
A very good point there JustAnotherFan. I was going to say that earlier but the combination of pretty pictures and slow forum response didn't help.

All my shots seen so far have been taken using a Fuji S602 Digital. 6MPix, 6x optical zoom. Aperture and exposure can be manually controlled (as can focus) to quite a large degree. A very nice peice of equipment and I'm quite happy with it. Works much better when used with a stand of course (unless it was the last picture - which would be silly :) )

Most lower end digital cameras do a reasonably good job at working out the best settings for an exposure. However, there are plenty of situations where they're not quite up to the job. The ability to manually control everything does complicate things, but it allows you to produce more interesting effects. In my case, the extended exposure and sensitivity of the S602 allow me to take night sky shots, even without extra equipment but shots of the sky in the daytime also benifit.

Very nice Asura :)

I particularly like your last shot from Seattle, with the famous tower looking over toward... is it Mt Rainier? The Lenticular cloud formations are also spectacular. A large version of this would be amazing!

Here's my last effort for now. This time, a near sunset shot of my own from near Lands End , UK . Taken with vastly reduced exposure settings (as you might guess), even a little lens flare to boot. As usual click for larger version.

I'm a bit unsure which mountain it is on the right side.. looking at the peak, possibly Rainier..otherwise could be St. Helen as well..picture was taken from Queen Anne's. Picture itself was taken in April of 02..during which spring came in very late..just remembering the time I spent waiting for that setting on the spot itself is making me sick..

Here's my favorite summer shot I've taken. Where I live isn't particularly
verdant, but this is right next to a nearby lake and gets periodically flooded
or swampy and thus proves the exception:

http://dev.swforums.com/Images/wai/2.jpg

I used a 1.3 MPix Olympus D-400Z (bought back when such a camera cost 800$ Oo).

I understand that pain there Wandering AI. I have a digital camera from the early days of digital cameras, and to see the prices now is kinda painful (or would be if I actually paid for the thing instead of winning it in a lawsuit).

btw, nice pictures people.

I jumped into the digital camera fray when they were still moderately expensive but not anywhere near that expensive Wandering A.I.!!
My first 2.1MPix Fuji was about $400. Nice photo with the camera anyway :) . However, the latest S602 was £550 (~ $900) - a bit of a expensive splash out, but I'm not regretting it one bit. It's a joy to use.

Asura : Indeed, some nice macro work there! I have a few 'semi' macro shots, mostly of water features though. I shall have to dig them up. Oh, and cheers for the large Seattle pic!

Funnylink : Well, what can I say but... Ahhhhhhhhhh!! :D

Triple zZz : Lovely waterfall shot there! Makes me want to post such a shot now.. and the mountains fading into the haze is quite effective too. Nice. I guess these are digital stills, being 640x480?

Thanks gravitation :) - (EtherNEZ waxes philosophical) - There are beautiful places everywhere if you just look closely enough for them....

That particular waterfall would be a particular challenge to climb I suspect as it's almost entirely covered with freezing cold meltwater!! *shiver*

Asura :heh: Well there's certainly worse ways they could kick the bucket....

Keeping with that watery theme.... here's a nice water feature, not a macro really but certainly a serious close-up. This waterfall is really small! Water is always a fascinating material to photograph.

You know EtherNEZ, that might look better with a longer exposure time. However, I am not sure how long your digital camera will let you go. The longer the exposure on waterfalls the cooler they look :)

I agree. It's a shame because that picture was taken with my first Fuji which does not allow much in the way of manaul control. The new S602 could do it of course, 15 seconds exposure capability there. That will be an idea for my next venture out, certainly :)

You don't have to have a great camera! If you know how to use your camera to it's full potential and you have a little imagination you can still produce excellent photographs! Don't be intimidated by enormous images. Large does not always equate to high quality - I just happen to use my camera in 3Mpix mode most often, 128Mb SM do not last particularly long with that kind of punishment but still... :)

Photos from Japan would be a very welcome addition to this thread :)
I'd really love to see first hand pictures of Fuji-san, Hokkaido and Okinawa particularly, but I'd be happy with anywhere else really!

You don't have to go all the way to France for a nice sunset :heh:.

You just need the right timing, some nice high level cirrus/alto clouds, a little above normal aerosol content and Bob's your uncle! Alternatively, go to your nearest coastline..... :p

Some night time shots Wandering A.I., eh? Okay, let's try that..... though no drunken wanderings here (well, not exactly :p )

EtherNEZ

.... yes, I see the resemblance, all thanks to the lighting! ^_^

I quite like the housing and effect of the overexposed lights in this one. Of course, a stand was essential to take this one.

I should imagine it would be a beautiful place to see in the spring/summer, indeed, i've actually seen quite a few pictures of Val' in the summer. It's amazing how much it changes - you would barely recognize it if you only visit in winter.

For a moment there I thought the houses were on fire. The CNN images on the California wildfires is still on my mind. :heh:

Yes, I can understand how firey scenes would have a tendancy to be 'burned' into your mind.... (for shame EtherNEZ, for shame) Well, at least here there wouldn't be a shortage of water to put them out....

Tzurial - Watch out! Those squirrels (particularly Grey ones) are very resourceful. He may be playing all meek and innocent now, but he (and his mates) will soon be raiding your kitchen of foodstuffs - be especially wary of squirrels bearing cans of bud..... ;) :D

I live on the side of a mountain and our neigborhood doesnt really have fences so they can come and go as they please. And yeah..mooses here are kinda like cats, cats that can kill you by stepping on you, but cats none the less :)

I remember mooses, those were kinda cool the first time I saw them. They don't live in the central flat lands of the US unfortunately. We have deer though, lots and lots of deer.

Ah, that reminds me. Do you have the other kind of cats that frequent mountains. The kind that take away anything left outside smaller than themselves (ie. small dogs, other cats, ferrits (don't ask), steaks, hot dogs, big dogs, children, ect...). Those things were evil. Far worse than the bears (who btw, seem to do the same thing, but with bigger items only they eat them in place).

Also, be care feeding the squirrel. You don't want to give them lots of dairy products (for the same reason you don't do it to cats). Especially chocolate. Hyper squirrels with the scoots are scary.

You can always guarantee that wildlife photos will provide much amusement.... :)

Anyway, continuing the night theme, here are some of my astro photographs. These push my S602 to the extreme of it's light capturing capabilities (Well the star shot one does at least). Lunar shots actually need to be underexposed a lot more than you would think. It's easy to take a picture of the moon and end up with a featureless white 'blob'

http://217.44.203.154/images/photography/moon_1.jpg

The next one took a full 10 second exposure at ISO400 sensitivity (I could have used ISO1600 but it's too noisy). Just goes to show you how good the human eye is at picking up photons..... ;) . This has been Histogram adjusted to 'compact' the luminance space in the image, allowing the stars to appear more clearly. This is why there are blotches in the sky which should be completely black - especially where I took this, a long way away from any towns.

It's a shot of the constellation of Ursa Major , the "Great Bear'', also known as the 'Plough' or 'Big Dipper'. The second star from the left can be seen to have a companion. This is the periodic eclipsing binary of Alcor and Mizar. This constellation has some historical significance in the field of navigation as the last two stars on the right can be used to find the 'Pole Star'. Very useful ;)

Ouch. I'm sorry to hear that PiGGiEE, it's a sorry state of the world we're in that people just can't accept each other regardless of colour/ethnic background, time after time. Good luck finding a better place!

Anyway. Back to the topic. Brrr. I feel cold just looking at that, but snow scenes are great as well (add it my list of likes  )

To warm you up a little, here's a composition of sunset shots. The first shot is perhaps a little too early and doesn't quite fit with the rest but it's the only one I have in that sequence). I also like the fading and shadows across the sands...

Snow? I wish we'd get some! Frankly though the only decent chance of seeing snow is going to the Scottish Highlands or into Europe. Blasted Gulf Stream! Block it off I say! Let's haul some nice large icebergs from west Greenland and get the freshwater flowing... :D

As to the sunset's, yep. It's all the same one. Notice how the cloud builds up offshore as the Ocean -> Land airflow sets in during the land cool down period. No green flash though :p

>CRT display area... *yuck*, colours are awful

That's an odd opinion to have. LCDs have always had worse contrast, less
brightness, and a hard limit on colors (have they even broken 24-bit yet? they
were stuck there quite a while...) compared to CRTs. Make sure your CRT is
calibrated properly since they do need that.

Hmm, so many sun/sunrise/sunset pictures. Closest I have is this:

Neat bright clouds and rainbow lens effect at least. This would also be the
closest I ever came to a moose...in other words so far away it could just as
well have been a deer AFAIK, lol. Setting is early on in a two day climb of

Oh, quite the contrary. I've seen many, many CRT displays (from little 14" cruved screens all up to mighty 21"+ Diamond/Trinitron Flats) and none of them can match the clarity/contrast and true to life colour that my TFT screen can display. The colours are far more representitive of what you 'see' in real life which is why photographs look much nicer. They're not pefect by any means, particularly with refresh rate but I find that a bonus rather than a problem.

CRT's day's are numbered, mark my words. And good riddance to the bulky things too. (Can't you tell I'm pro flat screen??? :D :p )

Lovely effect on the picture btw. I have one just like it but not quite as pronounced. :)

WHat I want to do is take my Cam and set the shutter speed to manual and keep it open for 5+sec on heavy trafic, would look cool since you would see the lines of lights. Dam that photography course. Anyways, I need to take out my cam and use it more

you can get filters called ND filters that will cut down the amount of light that you get coming to your camera, and cause no change in colors or polarization. This means that you can use them to simply increase the amount of time that you have the shutter open without having an adverse effect on the exposures. It can also be used to allow you to open the apature more than you would normally be able to (an ND does it for 2 stops if I remember right).

Nice waterfall there EtherNEZ. Might look a bit better with a longer shutter time, but as you said you had no tripod at the time.

It's easy to do long exposures in calm, quiet scenes like that. There wasn't really much of a chance of movement to be honest (except for the pisties up near the top of the mountain). I did choose the angle with a little care however. In other 'brighter' more mobile situations you might need to do as EsperChld suggests with neutral density filters - though I haven't used any yet.

root : I've yet to get a decent looking rainbow shot, but that works pretty well. Nice.

picture (http://www.uploadit.org/files2/101103-AAAA0004.JPG)Very nice Flash_Squirrel! It would be nice if we could see sunrise's like that here on a regular basis - I'm jealous! The cloud reflections are especially striking, particularly the alto cumulus towards the top. There's always a demand for nice sunrise/sunset pics! To that end -->

Some suggestions : You should try taking some more and see if you can improve the focussing a little - you could produce some really pretty sunrise's like that. Maybe also try and get more of the sky in instead of the inevitably black ground area. Experiment! That's what digitals are great for :)

Finally, can't leave the photos alone for long! Here's a parting shot of the White Cliffs of Dover while heading over to the civilised region of mainland Europe (Calais - France, in this case :) ). Notice the cloud lingering over the SE of England? It was nice to get into the Sun again after 3 weeks...

Im afraid thats pretty much impossible, since I usually wake up really early, and I cant spend time on focusing on the picture like you suggested. (Damn bus I hate it >_< I want my car back)

Today was a rather special occasion though, so I decided to take a quick pic of it. ^^

I will try to take new photos then, promise.

Nice photos, everyone! This is by far one of my favorite threads. :)

Tzurial - Wow, where did you take that pic of the bat? It's so cute and so tiny. :)

Esperchild - I just love your photos. You have a great eye for capturing the beauty in nature.

accela - Interesting photos! I love the close-up of the eye.

Flash_Squirrel - That sky is absolutely gorgeous! :)

EtherNEZ - Ooh, nice! It looks so peaceful and tranquil there. :)

It isn't much, but here's a photo that I took above Lands End in San Francisco. I love taking pictures of different types of flowers, and I liked the color of this one.

Ah! Another flood! How can I hope to keep up with this? :)

Okay here goes. I hate leaving anyone out.

Flash_Squirrel : Public transport!! Ahhhhhh!! My sympathies! :heh: Well if you ever get a chance, consider a shot :)
hinata-chan : Good close in there! I have a few flower ones below, hopefully these will be similarly colourful!
Hellychan : Glad you liked it :D That long exposure (did you do this with a digital?) looks particularly effective around the Eiffel tower! The lights are almost particulate, seeming to 'wave' around the tower itself. Beautiful.
Uzumaki626 : Very placid looking waters there! Perhaps a little more in the scene to add 'depth' would have been nice but I'm just as guilty of doing that myself :) . I wouldn't mind seeing (or swimming) in water like that more often but I actually prefer our rough, altogether more rocky coastal areas here in the UK
Dark_Voodoo : Looks a bit closer to our kind of water :) Darker and altogether more rough than those almost tropical shots earlier. Who's the deadly Siren? :D

Ooh. Some more B&W Autumnal shots Esperchld! The detail is exceptionally good!

Okay. Now for some Macros (and Super Macros) - Now including EXIF information (on the thumbnails only). Click for large versions - the leaf shot is particularly good in large format but be warned that it is huge! These were very much experimentations so plenty of room for improvement. I just need a nice sunny day!

omg , sure he looks sad , but .......... he is not cute at all , that's a bat , and bat likes .... blood I think *_* , they are scary

-gasp- dot_rain! I hope you arent serious. That is a classic misconception and negative steryotype that is putting bats in danger ;_; 60-70% of bats eat insects...like the 2 I took pictures of (note the mealworm) and are very important to the eco system by keeping bug populations down. Each bat can consume 600 mosquitos an hour!

Only 3% of known species are 'vampire bats' and they live in rainforests where people rarely see them (except now that their habitat is being cut down and replaced with cattle -AKA easy prey, thier numbers are on the rise)

So dont be scared of them!! you should love the bats ;_;

-a-hem- anyway..beautiful pictures again everyone!!

:heh: Oh no!!!!

It's come back from the dead! The seas are calm before the tsunami rides in....

Curses, now I'm going to have to fix the links.... damn you lwl12 !! :D :p

Tommy - Very nice shots there! I want to pilot a light aircraft through the canyons some day.

GATX207_Blitz - I have a rival for pictures of the Alps!! :heh: - You win however since you got to the highest point, Mt Blanc!. I had to settle for a nice profile shot some 30km on of La Grand Motte instead.

Anyway, nice to see some more interest here! It doesn't have to be landscapes remember! Though I am biased.... Anyone have any nice snowy scenes? I'm feeling a little nostalgic for the white stuff since I haven't seen any this year. Though I suspect Gravitation may well have ¬_¬ .... :)

EDIT : ack, nak! you slipped in there. I particularly like your cloud/tree line shot. Nice.

May I ask why the pictures are uncolored? Is it because of an art aspect? If it is meant to be art, what is the meaning behind the grayscaleing?

May I ask why the pictures are uncolored? Is it because of an art aspect? If it is meant to be art, what is the meaning behind the grayscaleing?

because its real developing? umm its photography class and you're only allowed black and white film? perhaps?

we use the actual chemicals and work in a dark room to develop them, fixers, developers, etcs. and enlargers, filters, etc. ^_^ The class just started 2 weeks ago!

what makes black and white photos significant and artisitic?
the artist must always rely on light. light creates the picture. light gives it composition, shadows, body, detail, mood. you usually cant get that with colored photos. even the modern artists/professional phtographers use black and white film.

because its real developing? umm its photography class and you're only allowed black and white film? perhaps?

we use the actual chemicals and work in a dark room to develop them, fixers, developers, etcs. and enlargers, filters, etc.

Ok ^^. Just wanted to hear it from you. Did you already experiment with orange and red filters? You can make impressive photos of the sky (or photos that contain much sky...for example together with scenery/skylines of towns).

yes i've worked with fitlers. i usually work with red ones (3.0 pts and above filters). Its too bad that I don't have an SLR camera to give my photos more composition and an artistitc direction. I work with a japanese viewfinder(point and shoot with zoom) camera.... -_- but I take as good of a picture as advance student ^_^ I have to take a icture of the sky. ..... its too cloudy iv Seattle to be even thinking about it, but it was sunny or partly sunny and the sun was setting behind fat marshomallows clouds with a lot of contrast, i would try it.

That would be a nice and interesting photograph of a sky. I love pictures with interesting and highly contrasting skies.
However I am not a photographer myself (don't have the money for the equipement). A friend that I know from college made some nice pictures. He told me about the filters, and that I would never get those results with an autoshutter camera. He told me also 'bout strange formulas to calculate the best shutter timing according to different filters and stuff (I did not really understand what he was trying to explain ^^').
But since then I know, that it is really difficult and kind of art to make a good photograph.

It says barber shop? I took one of those old school photograph classes my senior year myself. I went to take "pictures" at the movies and the mall... and sometimes the arcade when the teacher told us to go outside to take some photos. Hey, it was for "educational" purposes.

Knowing how fickle you are, I give it till the end of your semester till you totally lose interest in photography =P.

nice cheap 0.3 mega pixel at only £266 (US$400) in '99 but bought it 'factory reconditioned' for £100 (UD$150) in '00. bargain.

that pic is cropped it is only 0.13 Mpixel, blurry, and generally not very good.

I prefer to keep my memories in my head, since only the important ones are saved in there.
i'm terrible at remembering things/places/events and as i'm not the literary sort i don't keep a diary. i prefer to keep a visual scrapbook of my life by keeping a digital camera on me and taking snaps when and whereever i feel like taking them. i've had a digicam in my pocket for the past 4 years and apart from a few odd months when i've done nothing interesting or my camera's been broken i've got pictures from almost every day... (exageration)

i must say that i prefer ppl's still life to anything else.... still life portraiture and objects are the best... i also like the nature photos...

this might prompt me to redesign my site and put it back up :)

The Photograph is technically well done. But pls forgive me when I find the apples better (from the art aspect). This photograph is way too overloaded for me. It won't let the viewer escape from the trailer. It makes me feel like to be in a deadend (and I somehow don't really like to be in a deadend :heh: ).

@d07n37,

I agree that it traps the viewer's focus. Att the beginning I had the whole trailer on the negative, but when it printed the whole picture, it was too ordinary, and scattererd (or maybe the picture was just badly taken :heh:) And so the teacher told e to crop it and emphasized the graffiti art, making that my subject. And so I printed that and had no idea there was a girl going into the shop. (I have bad eyes, but I don't wear glasses. I can barely see anything in the dark room.)

d07n37, honestly my memory is horrible as well, and I don't keep a journal/diary. In fact I was in an accident 7 years ago which left me with permanent brain damage and now I forget things pretty easily. Regardless, for some reason I just don't like holding a camera and taking pictures. I can't really explain why, I just feel that way about them. Maybe its because when I was little my mom/aunt made me pose for some 50,000 pictures and I grew sick of it :heh:

Pretty cool piece of code! Looks really neat too, but then, is it me, or are the filters being overlaid one on top of the other because after a while of running, the original looks really screwed up. But really nice nonetheless

Yes the filters overlay each other. My idea was that there are an infinite number of filter combinations that could be applied. I know the image does kind of get screwed up eventually. That's usually the fault of the filters that use offset or color difference (look on the status bar of your web browser to see). But I'm glad you liked it! :)

Yeah well it was a homework assignment and it had to be written as an applet so I didn't have much of a choice :) Yeah for some reason it seems to have a problem with the Windows machines here on campus, but it runs perfectly on Linux and Sun systems. Haven't tested it on a Mac yet though.

i didn't use filters really... all i did was grayscale the image, turn it into rgb mode again and then blue toned it by going to the variations option in image>adjustments>variations, and adding color to the bw picture. then i used the lasso tool and selected the train only. and then i used motion blur on that set it to the direction and force and I wanted. i did the same to the concrete so itd look like the moving train had a reflection. and lastly, i used the lens flare and just added that in. i should blue tone the flare too because the orange dot is bugigng me. its VERY VERY EASY. took me 5 minutes to do everything ^_^

:eyebrow: Im from Bogotá, Colombia! I've already said it a few times...

to stay on topic and promote my country's places this is the church of "las lajas" in the departament of Nariño, (not my photo I found it on the internet), I went there when I was eight years old and it was amazing, a huge gothic church dracula's castle-like.
