Hey guys. I just started reading Death Note the other day and I must say, I have become completely addicted. Obata Takeshi doesnt fail to amaze me in this work. I made this thread to discuss the manga and here your opinions on it. I think that the plot in this is pure genius. Raito versus L. The battle wits to see who can outdue the other to succede in their plans. The morals and internal conflict that the characters experience is truly unique in the sense that its used. (Okay, not completely but you know where I'm comin' from)
I just love the deep plot that keeps twisting and turning and how both L and Raito try to set each other up. Also the fact that they became friends on the outside, all the while deep down trying to manipulate the other to do what they want them to do.

With it, you are able to kill anyone you want by just writing their name in it and thinking about their face. The real story picks up when this guy named "L" makes an effort to stop the main character, Raito, from killing people. (Even though he was only really killing criminals to try to make the world a utopia) The story is about their conflicts and trying to stop each other to insure the success of their own goals.

Death Note is really very interesting!
I do enjoy the battle between Raito and L. Both of them are so clever that they think about questions more deeply than ordinary people.
In the latest Page 27, the owner of the second deathnote told Raito the day and the place they are going to meet each other. The story gets much more interesting. Can't wait to see the next Page.

What chapter are you talking about that has "the owner of the second deathnote told Raito the day and the place they are going to meet each other. The story gets much more interesting. Can't wait to see the next Page."
I've only read up to 24.

Yes we are and I have been getting the releases by OrangeTangerine. They currently have up to chapter 25 out.
**Note to mods: If the series becomes licensed I'll remove the name of the group who is translating it.
I would like to know from which group Kaka gets it because he seems to have later chapters than I do.
Obata only does the art, the same as Hikaru no Go. He's not involved with the story at all.

Yes your correct. The story is made by Ohba Tsugumi.

chinese groups tend to have a higher efficiency in translation stuff ^^bb

Does anyone agree with me that this is the best manga ever? Previously, I believed that 20th Century Boys held that spot, but after reading Death Note I was left shellshock.

As i remember, he did Hikaru no Go with another person. And well, Death Note 2 was Shuesha`s / Japans best selling manga last month (speaks for itself).
If Ohba Tsugumi has authored anything else, it is under a penname. Death Note is the only thing he is credited with.

You mean it’s a false name? Reading Death Note, I'm so surprised at how much it appeals to female readers. It has those yaoi vibes and just really clicks with me, I can't really explain why. I keep thinking Death Note is too good to be a shonen manga. Occasionally I feel that way about other shonen titles, so I thought it was just a coincidence. Does anyone else feel that way about Death Note?
So there's a mystery and hidden name situation behind the creators themselves lol. Curiouser and curiouser. :)

I read the first 27 chapters today and WOW. This story is awesome and with the HikaGo artist doing the artwork Death Note has just vaulted itself into my top three manga. This manga is just crazy good. I could not stop reading it!
The funny thing is I read the pilot earlier and thought the actual manga would be trash since I felt the pilot was just plain ridiculous and too kiddy. The real thing has turned out so much better.
I was really impressed by both the plot and the art. I'm convinced that the writer is some kind of genius. The character design is amazing; L totally wins me over with his terrible posture and fondness of sweets.

I agree, hands down! However, I admit I haven't read a whole lot of manga to compare Death Note to.
Reading Death Note, I'm so surprised at how much it appeals to female readers. It has those yaoi vibes and just really clicks with me, I can't really explain why.
I'm feeling the yaoi vibes too, although my inital thoughts were focused entirely on the intriguing storyline. The vibes I get from Death Note aren't nearly as intense as those I get from, say, Prince of Tennis. I think Death Note appeals equally to both sexes.

I actually think that--at the very end--Raito or L will die, not Ryuuku. But I tend to be totally wrong when it comes to plot predictions, so maybe not...

Anyway, I'm so glad I found this series--I rarely read manga, but this one definitely has me hooked. :)

But the concept is sooo intresting. Great manga. I personally think Raito is wrong. I hope L wins the whole 'case' thing.

In Japanese, the word for "notebook" is "note." So when they say "Death Note," what they're really talking about is a "Death Notebook."

Well at one point Obata drew a chapter of Bobobo as a guest artist so that might be the reason why the cameo is there. BTW if anyone knows where to get that particular chapter of Bobobo share the wealth!
Wow, I love this manga, it may be my favourite manga at the moment... up there with Naruto at least. I love the game of cat and mouse L and Raito play, watching two geniuses trying to out do the other is really incredible. The yaoi undertones, LIKE IN CHAPTER 37, are just... getting sort of REALLY interesting.

I think the manga plot is seriously going weirder and weirder since Misa got introduced... and now that Light Yagami (I'm really a bit surprised 月 can be pronounced as Light...) has changed back to his innocent(?) self, the deathnote ability is just more and more convenient as the plot progresses... a bit too convenient I'd say... but then it's still quite fun to read, just that it doesn't feel the same as before...

yeah. if it were just a battle between L and Raito it'll be too boring. A hot girl joining in the party is always welcomed, especially a gothic lolita.
DN's plot is getting ridiculous and fanservice is starting to really bug me. I hope they won't ruin the cool concept. Light ( which is by the way a stupid name ) was an interesting character because of his wickedness. And now if wickedness is gone permanently... :sad:
Edit: Yep, I know, Light have most likely planned something to figure out his old self. Perhaps left some clues to buried DN. The question is what will he think about his old self.
Come on do you really think Raito doesn't have something planned? There's no way he would do all that and then just give up, what's the point in that?
I don't read Chinese but there's someone who does English text translations, so I read those while looking at the Chinese scans :P

Yeah,i totally agree with you.Takeshi Obata is easily one of the best Manga artists' ever to grace the scene.(*I mean it*)
Another one of my favourite factors about this manga is the fact that the 2 main protagonists are very unique,not your typical shonen-genre leads.The sense of realism gained from the authors unique portrail of his charcaters allows the story to be told from a unique perspective.
I personally like Raito alot,(*Or rather,how the author potrays Raito*)due to the fact that he is just a guy like us who happens to find a death note on the ground.The conflict which rose within himself after he killed his first two victims lead to a reasoning which helped Raito himself to believe that what he did was right which eventualluy led to a goal which resulted from that very reasoning in the first place(*Goal=Become the god of the new world he would create*),a conflict that we can all relate to.(*In the sense that we have experienced this sort of argument within ourselves in one form or another before*)
The best thing about [DeathNote],in my opinion,is that we can relate to the charcaters in one way or another.

Aha, I'm not as honourable as you think. If nobody will appreciate what I do, then I'll probably not do it. I'm just trying to do something that's within my ability to do for the community. Anyway here's some more translation:

Ahh I originally thought using the word "pervert", but I checked for the meaning from dictionary.com (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=pervert) and it says that the noun form means " One who practices sexual perversion," which shouldn't mean that in that case i think...
Oh, about the names, I'm more familiar with Raito/Ryuuku than the official names. However, I'm completely fine to switch it over to their official names.

Weird things happened while I was translating it... First, I had translated 7 pages, then my browser had to be redirected to another page which made me lose the translation... than I tried to work on my laptop.. and I can't type spaces with the editor... so give me some more time while I recover from this shock..

i'm sorry for being inactive these few days. suddenly, i've got work piled up. meanwhile i'm trying to make time to continue translations.
btw it seems that chap 39 is out in chinese.
Yeah,i totally agree with you.Takeshi Obata is easily one of the best Manga artists' ever to grace the scene.(*I mean it*)
Another one of my favourite factors about this manga is the fact that the 2 main protagonists are very unique,not your typical shonen-genre leads.The sense of realism gained from the authors unique portrail of his charcaters allows the story to be told from a unique perspective.
I personally like Raito alot,(*Or rather,how the author potrays Raito*)due to the fact that he is just a guy like us who happens to find a death note on the ground.The conflict which rose within himself after he killed his first two victims lead to a reasoning which helped Raito himself to believe that what he did was right which eventualluy led to a goal which resulted from that very reasoning in the first place(*Goal=Become the god of the new world he would create*),a conflict that we can all relate to.(*In the sense that we have experienced this sort of argument within ourselves in one form or another before*)
The best thing about [DeathNote],in my opinion,is that we can relate to the charcaters in one way or another.
The character of Raito from the beginning has seemed to lack depth. No close friends to speak of, no girlfriend, even the relationship he has with his parents and sister seemed somewhat distant and cold. Like everyone around him is little more than an acquaintance. The only thing he seemed to be emotional about was the rationalized goal he had for using the deathnote, to make the world a utopia with him being the one in control. But over time the desire to protect his ego, keep that power at any cost, and willingness to use the power against any threat seems to become his main goal and that turns him into just the kind of murdering criminal he sought to eliminate at the beginning. If Raito came to understand this, the realization would be along the lines of "We have met the enemy and he is us". If he grasps this before 'L' could prove that Raito was responsible for all the deaths's, he could forfeit the deathnote as an easy way out which would wipe his memory of the power he'd once had and how he had used it. But would he settle for quitting while he was ahead and accept a stalemate with 'L', or would he try to temporarily establish his innocence with the plan being to regain the power later to push his luck for a win?
raito is all innocent in the beginning, you can tell by looking at his eyes,
but later he becomes twisted.
my fav is L, hes the best, and so is misa, but she kinda is the not bright type.
but i like all the characters in there.

Wow, I just started reading this manga today, and I read all the way up to ch. 38! This is a really great manga, with great characters! I don't think I've been this obsessed with a manga for a long time. Raito/Light is definetly an awesome character as well as L. They are both really evil in a way, tho the story is taking a weird turn now.

You mean that one chapter thing? No, it has nothing to do with the current Death Note; think of it as an alternative ending. It was first published in those serialization magazines as a one-piece, but the subject became quite popular so the mangaka went ahead with the whole story.

Some kind of goal I could some how relate to? Making money with the deathnote is just plain stupid and completely unintresting.

Here we go again. :rolleyes: Just like how American English assimilate foreign words or phrases into its vocabulary, Japanese does the same with English...just that they don't bother leaning how the words are used in English. If in Japan everyone understands that "note" stands for "notebook," then the word "note" in that context is no longer English (heck, it's even pronounced differently).
I don't know about this "coolness" factor you see; if a series with an English title appeals to you more, then good for you. For the rest of the Asian viewers, an English title simply makes it easier to refer to internationally, but it does not make a series any more appealing, or in you view, "cool."

Umm, have we been reading the same series here? :eyebrow: After Misa got caught, Raito lost his greatest weapon against L (along with Remu) as well as fully exposed himself to L. Now if he only had to shake off L, Raito might have done something differently, but because Remu threatened to kill him if he doesn't rescue Misa, he pretty much had to find a way to fake their innocence...and didn't he do that quite effectively?

He did plan executions--just that he told Remu to carry them out for him a week later. The last several times Raito tried to fake out L, his plans backfired because he faked so perfectly that he raised L's suspicion instead. So this time, he purposely not commit any executions during the first week of his imprisonment; even L was confused because he expected Raito to continue the execution to prove his innocence...didn't you read that part?

His name is in kanji, and Japanese names in kanji can be pronounced however they like--there are some conventional spellings, yes, but you should not assume all of them to be the same.

Gah, Raito is how Japanese say the english word "light".. for some reason, his parents decided to take the kanji "tsuki" which means "moon" but can also mean "light" and use the english pronounciation. This is why his name is weird.

Your not alone, seems the author is streaching things out trying to come up with a good new direction.
The author is trying to be too smart for his own good. The main draw of the series has always been the L vs Raito mind battles, and all the plot twists introduced is ruining the plot. I felt that the series has started to lose steam after Misa first appeared, but the recent chapters is really killing the series.

Whichever one is Kira, I pray he dies a horrible horrible death for having the audacity to say he wants to marry Misa to flaunt her like a trophy wife AND THEN KILL HER OFF SO HE GETS A FAT SUM OF INSURANCE MONEY! :nono: :frustrated:

I just had to voice my frustration about how the best manga i had ever read (first 30 or so chapters), did a 180 and became the one I'm now least excited about every week... :( It feels like such a waste...
There's nothing I hate more than when characters loose their memories. Never have I been able to pinpoint exactly when a manga turned bad, as I have with DN. I just hope he somehow gets his memory back. Please... :(
I'm at 42 now, does it get any better?

I think I've caught up...somewhat. I started reading DN A LONG time ago but I stopped...because Toriyama didn't have anymore to provide...at least none that I can see.
But now at 40...and reading the latest posts...there's a third KIRA?? The Shinigami are beyond amused aren't they? That's why they're dropping Death Notes left and right.
So far, evil main character = hahahahahaha. Beyond amusing. Kira's the type of person you would immediately like, even though he can kill you without hesitation.

I gotta say Misa surprised me in the way she handled this :)
Although she relied a lot on Remu, her plan was almost L/Raito-like in terms of thinking ahead.
The Yoshiba arc should end pretty soon (within 5 or 10 chapters perhaps), but i doubt they'll stop it here. Will Raito get back Ryukyu, or Remu ? I'm missing Ryukyku ;;

From a storyline perspective it makes no sense for raito to give up his notebook. What made deathnote great was the chess match between raito and ryuuku (L). After the last few chapters I've come to only one conclusion. Raito is in love with L.
Man I'm bummed. As readers there isn't any mystery or suspense left. We already know what the death note can do. We also already know how smart Raito and L are. We don't get to see the death gods anymore. All that talk is boring, how disappointing

There is a group called Pedobears that is working on Death Note, and though the translation is not as good as Orangetangerene, they come out with a new chapter on bittorrent every Monday...so far they're on chapter 50.
I'm really excited about the last three chapters, but I'm still trying to figure out spoiler tags, so I guess I can't talk about it.
On pure speculation, though, I think this series is going to give L the death note at some point. There's an inner Keyer Sosa in L, that comes out every once in a while and I'm intrested in seeing what a guy like L would do with it. Other than use it as a coaster for his tea cup.

Wow Page 51 was exciting, and i really can't wait for 52.
It won't be long until Light either recovers his memory, or knows just as much about the Note as he did when he owned it.
And about Higura's resemblance to Greed, i'd say it's pretty close, but only thing i gotta say is that he's pretty badass looking. I thought he was pretty lame when falling for all those tricks, but he changed into a cold hearted insta kill Kira. Next chapters will be intense.
But i'm not too worried about our main characters.
I think he needs to see Matsuda once more to get his name. Plus if he tries to kill Misa, Rem will kill him.
Either way he's on a one way to hell.

Mello has been missing for chapters now. I'd pretty like to see him join forces with Near again.
Here's a quick recap: After the incident in LA with Mello escaping and Light's dad dying as a result, Near's deduction skills got Light cornered so much that he decided to pull another Higuchi scenario again. As entrusting Misa would just endanger Light himself.
Except this time the new Kira would be a hunk called Teru, who is light years ahead of Higuchi in terms of intelligence, and who has the balls to act on his own will. Already, Teru has finished off the Kira-cult TV-presenter, and appointed a new, more "neutral" spokesperson for Kira, Takada Kiyomi.
Light is desperate to get into contact with Teru as soon as possible before their ideals stray off too far from one another (Light intends to give those who wish to repent a chance, while Teru is slightly more extremist in wanting to cleanse the world of all sins).
Unfortunately for him, his L investigation team has begun to suspect Light again after Near proved the 13-day rule to be fake, so Light couldn't do anything without being watched. Fortunately for Light, Kiyomi happens to be Light's "girlfriend" in university, and he uses this reason to come into contact with Kiyomi, and subsequently Teru, who willingly submits himself to "God's" command. Light also gives Kiyomi the "Misa treatment" and ensnares her easily.
Near decides to confront Light in a recent phone conversation. N implies he knows L, aka Light, is Kira, and pretty much challenge Light that whoever finds out the other side's identity first wins, just like in the beginning when L challenged Light. Near is going to openly send his SPK agents to infiltrate Kiyomi's bodyguards, and dares Light to kill them, which would incriminate him.
Near is also catching up pretty fast that besides an "L-Kira", which he knows is Yagami Light, there is also an "X-Kira", which he has just found out through observing videos of TV shows that it is Mikami Teru.
On the other hand, Misa is jealous that her celebrity status is being overtaken by Kiyomi, the ever popular official spokeswoman for Kira. She nearly gets into a fight with Kiyomi, but is stopped by a bodyguard (Near's SPK spy). Near could well make good use of Misa's jealousy to his advantage. I see Light's disregard of women would ultimately be his own downfall. :p

I just started reading Death Note a few days ago <Edit by Mod: xris. Please remember the manga is licensed!> and am up to Page 60. Me being too curious now, just had to ask: Could Near and Mello be L's siblings? I know I should keep reading to find out, and I am doing that, but I am also looking for the quick answer. I mean, the sugar thing is a clean giveaway, as is the way Nia sits and is rarely wearing shoes. (Still adorable! He twirls his touchable hair, squee!)
Also, will we ever find out L's real name. I seriously hated cheering for a letter. "Go L!"...Yeah. I just started calling him Ryu-kun in my head because Ryu was incorporated into his other names. (Ryuga and Ryuzaki)
I'm kinda shocked...I would have thought that the memory loss and regain would let Raito know how much of a good friend Ryu-kun could have been to him, being that he was Ryuzaki's first and, practically, only friend. I was all, "Why!? He could have been a goodish-bad guy. If you'd just let him gain access to a book I'm sure he'd turn wickedly-good too. (I really think that there was a good chance of that happening if the rest of the group wasn't so keen as to never use it.) Then you two could rule! And be amazingly intelligent and hot gods!" I was wishing. Mello or Near might sway...I guess that's highly unlikely, but...
Nia's a flagging genius compared to Ryu-kun...What's up with that!? I think that Ryuzaki should have called him in a long time ago, or he might still be...you know.
Hand-cuffs. Never once did I hear Raito complain about sleeping with Ryu-kun. Nor express any dislike for having to do EVERYTHING with him...I'm talking about peeing and pooping. That's gross.
Sugar...I wish I could eat as much as these guys do and never gain a pound! I would thing they would end up in sugar-shock. Hey, it happens. I wonder..."If you use your head, you won't get fat even if you eat sweets."...Could that be true? (That's one of the best scenes, he steals Misa's cake. I'm putting "Say what you want, but I'll be taking the cake." into my qoute bank.)
The fights. Hehe, Ryuzaki fights with his feet. That's quite adorable.
Is it strange to pick up some Ryuzaki-like habits? Scratching with your feet, eating whatever sugar you can get your paws on, sitting in a crouch position, holding things like they have germs.
He was a rather dainty man.

I also put my hands up to that. Hikaru no Go was an awesome manga, and I do feel that it didn`t end wuite right for me. The fact that we never see Hikarus` "full grown potential" just bugs me to no end.
I just hope they don`t drag on too long with Near and Mello. It`s good, but something biiiig needs to happen.

Hey everyone. I'm sure this has been asked before somewhere, but is deathnote going to be made into an anime? I think it would be awesome as an anime, although if they decide to animate this, I wonder how they'll go about animating/presenting those logic and jargon explanation sequences between L and Raito (Light).

Personally, I believe that Death Note will get an anime adaption sooner or later. It's obviously famous enough in Japan to garner an animation series, but so far, DN is still not long enough for it to create a full-fledged TV series. There's enough material for...I say, 13 episodes, but if they want to drag it into the Mello/Near arc, it's not yet long enough in the manga. Most long-running TV series like Naruto, Bleach or One Piece had their manga reaching over 100 chapters before it was adapted into anime, and they still need fillers.
Personally, when it gets adapted into one, I hope KyoAni gets the job. One thing about Death Note is that, it's extremely hard to emulate the style and unique athmosphere DN holds that makes it so awesome. Not to mention, they'll have to add a lot of extra material or it's hard to hold it's own.
I'd say DN gets an anime somewhere between late 2006 or early 2007.;)
Actually, I was looking at the style of the art and decided that it was quite realistic. I think I'd rather see them turn this into a TV show or 1-2 movies. The only downside I see is getting actors that could play the parts who would look like the charaters. I really like how the individual characters turned out and would hate for them to stray so far from the look. As an anime, I question if people would really sit through it for more than the first 3 episodes. The theme of 'cat and mouse' gets carried through so long that people would get very bored. But this is my cup of tea so I would watch it like a hawk! It really doesn't hold many elements that kids would watch and most adults are too close-minded to watch cartoons. With that said, I hope something gets done with this - ANYTHING! I love it so much, even when Mero goes missing. (BTW Where the hell is he? He, and Mat, should be in Japan already and it only takes the NPA one frame to be in another country!)

That's the main reason Mello gets more love than Near. Mello is clearly much more original than N, who's nothing more but L with a toy fetish.
And no, all of them are driven by their egos, more so on Raito. He can say whatever he wants to about God God God, but it's so blatantly clear that his motives are driven by his ego.
Let's be fair here, the potrayal of the FBI and CIA agents in DN aren't bad. They are clearly thinking on a rational scale, while the geniuses are thinking wildly. In a perfect world, everything N suggested are crazy and what his subordinates think are much more rational.
The toy fetish makes me question Nia's age. I'm thinking he's was about 12 (should be 14 like Mero though) in 2005 when L died and since it's 2009 he's about 15 or so. Mero is about 17-18 (he can flagging drive so of course he's over 17). And Raito is 23. (Nia and Mero are enemies academically, why does it seem like there is a huge age gap? They should be the same same but it never looks like that.) But the toy fetish is another way of saying nia is smart. The whole build it up and take it down thing, find out why it ticks. I'm just waiting for the day that Raito and Nia meet . . . "I got out smarted but a 10 year old!?" I'll be great! Why is all of L's money being spent on toys that get used once!?

N is having lead this time. He deceives Reito by showing interest to the TV reporter. He uses M to spy Misa, but he already knows Misa is not Kira2 anymore. N proves the identity X-Kira. The hard part is how to arrest X-Kira without getting hurt. The careless can lead to his downfall.
It's fun to see two women fighting over Reito. It's even more fun to see them fighting before him.

its been almost a decade since he buried him, his grave is in an unknown place, but how do u know that he wasnt preserved on some lab? if he was in a grave then hes all bones and dirt right now. If he was somehow preserved they need to find that kid with the eraser, and the "L" being alive might be plausable.
If the Death Eraser is introduced into the series, I really will stop reading Death Note.
Recently, we haven't seen anything related to M and his research on Kira.
I believe he will play an important role in the final showdown, and that might be in favor of Light rather than N. Cause if it continues like that Light will be in a highly disadvantageous situation (which is not a favorable thing for the series - there should be some kind of balance) and most probably caught on act. There is also Mikami, will he notice the things going around him?
By the way, the movie seems to be interesting. This is one of the stories that can be easily made into a movie rather than the anime series. The actors seem to match, except for their hairs; I prefer short hair for Light and long hair for L, as in the manga.

I really enjoy this manga, I've read up to Chapter 93. Even though L is dead, Light has remained one of the most interesting main characters in a series, and the constant mind games are awesome. Every week it manages to make me shocked by what happens.

Chapter 97 is out and translated.
Light has been aware of Near's secret operation. Now, it has come to the final stage.
It moved a bit fast in the last chapter. But, at least Light is aware of the situation. And he is prepared for it. Near seems to assume that Light is not aware that Mikami has been tracked down (maybe he is going to become aware in the next few chapters miracleously just like Light has done so).
Now what Light needs is for Mikami to see Near.
For some reason I'm stuck on Page 95; does it get any better!? It's kinda a low point for me. (Mello appearance would make me very happy...)

Sigh, even Mello is dead. Looks like the story is heading for a dark ending, with such a dark protagonist, it's to be expected.
We'll see if Near can survive this. At least Light doesn't have to worry about Misa being jealous and sabotaging his plans anymore now that Kiyomi is dead as well. It's only a matter of time before Mikami (the prosecter with the DN) is killed off as well.

Anyway just some corrections, Near's death isn't 06, since the 2nd arc takes place in 2009. You missed out on the remining digets, which represents his life span(or whatever unit it's in:rolleyes: ): "43406".
spoilers for 101:
Wearing L's mask, Near requested the group to wait 30 minutes, to ensure that no one dies during this period of time...and to protect himself.
After that 30 minutes, Near takes off his mask and basically described Light's entire plan to the group, and asked them to wait a bit longer for the arrival of the notebook posessor(Mikami) to arrive on site.
and like Near predicted, Mikami arrived with his death eye and quickly wrote down Near's name "Nate River" on the notebook.
With his imminent death, what could Near possibly be planing with that little smirk of his?

The cliffhanger of all cliffhangers! Never been so excited by a Shonen Jump cliffhanger before, even this week's Naruto cliffhanger isn't that exciting. How could Near expect to win? Who's gonna stop Mikami when he's already written Near's first name?
And the numbers Mikami see don't mean anything for a human eyes. For a shinigami, those numbers means the target's remaining life span (more below). Only a shinigami can comprehend how to add up those dates in human timescales. And Ryuuk says there's no way in hell you can get him to teach you how to calculate that. For Light, who is also a DN owner, his lifespan number cannot be seen, so Mikami instantly recognizes his "God".
Concerning the lifespan numbers seen through a shinigami eyes:
If everyone remembers, in the earliest chapters, Death Note shinigamis mainly live by writing down their chosen targets names and taking their remaining lifespan.
For example, if Ryuuk sees that I have 40 years left to live, he can choose to write down my name and add those 40 years to his own lifespan. Kind of like shopping for value, the higher the "remaining lifespan count", the better. Of course, there're probably strict rules within shinigami society to prevent this being abused, or there won't be enough human lives to feed the shinigamis.

If there's a king, there's got to be some rules that needs to be enforced and obeyed, no matter how lazy these shinigamis are.
If you remember the cowardly bug-armed shinigami Shidou, when he went to reclaim his DN from Mello, Mello took advantage of the fact that Shidou has rules that he must obey and made use of him. Right before Mikami was suspected, Raito do confront him on a train right? even tho they never talked... Surely Mikami already recognised Raito, right?

No, Light has not met Mikami face to face before. You must've mistaken Near's SPK agent for Light. Near sent one of his agents to stalk Mikami for some time, in order to confirm that Mikami has the DN, and whether he has a shinigami (Ryuuk) with him. Near now knows there's no shinigami with Mikami, since Ryuuk is with Light all the time.
Light only saw Mikami on TV, which is how Light decided to choose Mikami as his servant. The only direct conversation Mikami had with his "God" was through one phone conversation. (Light was totally badass in that chapter, when Mikami asked, "Are you God?" He promptly replied, "Yes." xD ) But Mikami has not seen Light's face until now.

DeathNote is pretty text heavy, so it's not uncommon for people to need to read it more than once for complete comprehension. Reading slowly helps.
DN has been "airtight" so far. In a way, all the convenient coicidences can be justfied as being "all part of the plan," be it in favour of Raito or his opposition.
(I simply refuse to call Raito "Light.")

While logic tells me DeathNote will be coming to a close sometime in the near future, I'm just not getting the "ending vibe" like I did during the first season. The previous arc with L was very exciting and unpredictable. This current season is a lot less radiant when compared to the first season. I'm really hoping for some sort of crazy plot twist in the next few chapters, but in all honesty I'm not feeling too optimistic about it. :(

Light has gone stupid for sure, but I believe even the original Light couldn't defeat N, coz he got psychic power. He don't really need much clues to tell what is going on exactly in Light's side.

How is that predictable?! No one predicted N did this before this chapter. Then again, no one predicted L would lose so easily before it happened. So... Really to kill Light off now would be the biggest surprise.
It is still possible that Light has a backup plan, which includes currently innocent Misa. Also, there is still Light's eye-trade. But, regardless of those, what he does at the scene is really uncool, if not a play.

They are still talking according to the script. In any case, I hope there won't be a third arc. Light just keeps looking uglier and uglier as the series progress, if we have arc 3 he will probably turn into a super creep.

same. me and my fren haf oso predicted tt near might have swopped the book and he purposely said that he juz change the paper so tt the complacent Raito will fall into his trap. I wouldn't tink that Raito is stoopid but definitely agree that he is way over confident of himself until he is complacent and thot tt everything in within his control. Maybe he has a backup plan with the help of misa misa or sth else... , if nt i tink the story is getting bit too disappointing. Hopefully, they wont announce it and said tt this is the end of the second arc and there will be a new arc coming with Raito (if he managed to escape) or his other fanatic follower making "Empire Strike Back". Raito's behaviour after being revealled as Kira was utterly pathetic. First falling flat as he attempted to run away, then desperately clawing on the closed gate. His self-conceitedness led to his eventual downfall. I was thoroughly disgusted by Raito's unwillingness (or inability, depending on how one looks at it) to accept defeat at the hands of Near.
Seeing how the chapter ended, I'm willing to bet the next installment will consist mainly of a, shall we say, "highly knowledgeable" lecture dealt by Near.

Light's downfall is spectaculorly pathetic. :heh: I really can't see how the series can continue now that its dark protagonist has fallen from grace. Or maybe the authors would dare to discard Light and have a new Kira-protagonist? Maybe Ryuuk still needs the excitement and goes to find Misa perhaps?

Light1. Light anticipates this, and instructs Mikami (through Kiyomi) to carry a fake DN.
Near2. SPK agent witnesses a sexual harrassor on the train dies, after seeing Mikami writing something on note.
Light2. Light has previously given some pages to Kiyomi, so it's actually Kiyomi who killed the sexual harrasor (remember time of deaths can be arranged easily). Fooling SPK agent into thinking it was Mikami who did the killing.
Near3. SPK agent reports to Near, Near instructs him to find chance to obtain suspected Death Note when Mikami is working out in gym, the only chance agent can get close to DN.
Light3. Light instructs Mikami to hide real DN, so the one agent obtained is a fake.
Near4. Agent obtains (fake) DN and SPK team analyses it before secretly returning it to Mikami
Near5. Near notes Mikami has a habit of writing down names on one page per day, so suggests swapping the (fake) DN paper with ordinary paper three days from then (i.e. the time of the showdown).
Near6. Agent successfully swaps paper of (fake) DN.
Near7. Near has everything prepared, yet realized something is wrong, and so in a hurry, he has SPK agent go and nick the real DN from Mikami as well and replacing that with another copy. And somehow, Near has the late Mello to thank for, which would be explained next chapter.
Light4. Light awaits the moment of truth, foolishly thinking he has won. Mikami thinks he's writing on the real DN...and the rest is, as they say, history. :heh:
This reminds me of the recently brilliant cop movie trilogy Infernal Affairs, where the triad mole played by Andy Lau also had a spectaculor downfall from grace in the third and last movie after his true identity was exposed. Light is behaving in exactly the same way. I wonder if Ohba Tsugumi is a HK movie buff herself?

I totally expected Raito to lose, but I never expected it to be this pathetic. Back in the earlier chapters, he sounded llike he would be ready for anything, and a N victory over him would not falter him, but somehow causing the fued to be prolonged, but he totally fucked over himself.
I actually thought Mikami was going to write Raito's name twice at the same time to negate the DN's effect, while having an insurance in case Master God Plan #158646 failed.
In retrospect, Light's biggest mistake might have been recruiting someone as idiotic as Mikami in the first place.

He should've gotten someone he can manipulate closely. Not someone who can only be contacted via 2 way messages.
Since the DN method failed,shouldn't Mikami utilise his super-natural killing powers and wish for everyone except Raito to die? It could very well work as good as the DN, even if it's slower.

At that time Light was already forced into a corner by Near, and his own colleagues, putting heavy surveillance on him. Apart from that, Light had no way of making contact with Mikami, which was why he picked Mikami, who seemed clever enough to guess how "God" thinks.
The best he could do was send the DN and hopes Mikami behaves. And up till the end, Mikami has done well, it was Light's own miscalculation that caused his downfall.

I would like HNG2 too :) maybe thats why Yuuta got canceled and Dn is ending? is it a coincidence? :D I am really interested in seeing if the next couple chapters of DN ends the series or perhaps by some miracle/ devil intervention :) Kira finds a way to get out of this... but then again the whole meeting couldve been recorded so whatever kira did wouldve proved he's kira...
Also, Kira freaking out like he did is human nature... he did somewhat gain his composure toward the end of the chapter though.... maybe Kira gave Ryuuki(?) some instructions before hand in case something like this happens. I think the reason Light didnt bother wanting to test the note the "big day" was probably because the real note was hidden somewhere safe till Mikami pick it up the last minute - a careless mistake for a genius like him. Anyway, i think what Mello did is key since it was probably done before they recaptured the note.... On a side note, I think Kira will have at least one comeback plan before this whole thing ends... and I doubt its going to be his watch though...

But Light said in 102 that Mikami is not the one who does judging. It's that girl.
I have yet to read much past the first book but I think the idea of killing off all bad people is just plain stupid. sadly evil will always find a way.....
But aside from that the story is fairly cool and I tend to like stupid ideas the most.

104 is out and it seems the game is up. Near explains how he did it all and somehow Mello indirectly helped out. At the end of the chapter Light seems to completely break down and on the final page he admits to be Kira

I really hope Light has an ace up his sleeve, because ending it like this would be truly pathetic, why can't evil prevail.
And why doesn't Light have a death date? Shouldnt this, somehow, foreshadow a victory for Light?

I'd be sick of seeing Light win again so it is nice to know he may lose. It's not only about who wins, but the psychological aspects of this manga that is so appealing. But I doubt Near really wants Light dead as much as making him admit his defeat. I bet Light will be locked up and some new character bearing a death note will emerge(and maybe even try to save Light?). Seeing as how there's so many Kira worshippers, the battle's only begun.
This is so pathetic I don't want to read any more. Yes, Light is the bad guy, yes, he had to go down sometime, just...not like this. Never like this. :(

In the end, it was Mikami's perfectionist attitude of trying to second guess his God too much that caused him and his God's downfall.
1. Through Kiyomi, Light specifically instructed Mikami to hide away the real DN and write criminal names down in the fake DN until the meeting with Near. Mikami hides the real DN in his bank safety deposit box.
2. Light also instructed Mikami to send a couple of DN pages to Kiyomi. So it is Kiyomi that did the killing of criminals, while Mikami would create an illusion for the SPK agent that it is him that did the killings.
3. Mikami has a daily schedule to which he strictly follows. On the 25th of every month, he would normally go to the bank. So this is when he would re-write the names that Kiyomi has written, just to be safe.
4. On January 26th, two days before the showdown, Mello comes and kidnaps Kiyomi. Kiyomi kills off Mello with the DN pages she hid in her clothes. Light then kills off Kiyomi with his own mini DN papers, just to get her out of the picture.
5. After seeing the news announce that Kiyomi is dead, Mikami tries to be clever and goes to his bank to write down Kiyomi's name on the real DN as well.
6. It is at this time the SPK agent stalking him was alerted that Mikami is breaking off from his normal habit of visiting the bank on the 25th of every month. He reports to Near.
7. Near realizes that he may have been duped into a deadly trap, and promptly has the agent nick the real DN from the bank safety deposit box for analysis.
8. Near then decides to replace the real DN with a fake DN and put that into Mikami's deposit box. And the tables are turned on Light without him even realizing.
