....ま、いっか。
The anime "Full Metal Panic" is based on Gatoh Shoji's novel of the same name. It basically revolves in an alternate world 21st century in which there is still a Soviet Union (hence there is still a Cold War going on). In this world, there are high tech bipedal WMDs called "Arm-Slaves" which are used in various Cold War hotspots.
The story is centered around two main characters: Sagara Sousuke, a transfer student to Jindai High School and Chidori Kaname, a beautiful blue-hair Jindai high-school girl. Unknown to Chidori though, is that Sousuke is in actuality a secret bodyguard from a mysterious organization called Mythril to protect her from being kidnapped by the KGB for human experimentation. The rest, I leave up to you to watch in the anime
The choreography and the animation sequences for "Full Metal Panic" are excellent as they are done by veteran director Chigira Kouichi and the well-established animation studio - GONZO Digimation. While there are several scenes that do happen to have a darker pallet and gradient, the animation quality throughout the episodes are rather consistent.

kj1980, I've been watching your posts for quite awhile.. especially on the Kimi board and the game board. Given your expansive knowledge, its a waste that you aren't a staff member of some anime news site or such.. ^_^;;

Ooops.. Sorry I didn't answer your question as well. I thought it was too broad and dealt with kj1980 first. But this are my thoughts of FMP!.. It's not an anime that rises about the cliche/mediocre standards too much. Nothing is truly inventive in the anime, and sometimes you *just* know what's going to happen.
I'm saying this as an FMP! fan (and I've been reading the translation of Full Metal Panic! Day by Day, the novel that continues after FMP! season 1, as well), because I truly felt that the anime took the safe route and the things covered within the 24 episodes were nothing amazing, to me at least. However, what kept me interested was Sousuke, the main character of FMP :D~ It's pretty funny how his military personality carries over to the classrooms, and the relationships between the characters are a plus as well. Everything is executed smoothly; character animation is decent and mecha animation is good.
You might want to check it out, but don't expect anything groundbreaking from FMP!. It's an enjoyable anime, though season 2 (Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu) is much more so; it's freakin hilarious. XD
You can search the board for more comments about FMP. Hope that helped give you some expectation of FMP.

Heh. FMP is one of my very personal favorites in anime. I recommend it to anybody new to anime, and to be frank, I've never met a person I've recommended it to who hasn't tried it and liked it. It's not humongously unique like Scrapped Princess, but IMO it's the perfect anime. There's a good amount of action, mecha, and general-all-purpose explosions. At the same time, the story features Japanese high-schoolers (the staple anime characters) with good insight on Japanese fads and cultures. There's also some drama, some comedy, and some hinted romance. An all-around knockout, I'd recommend it in a heartbeat.
That's just the first season (24 episodes). The second season, Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu (13 episodes), is IMO one of the most hilarious series I've ever seen. Though the mecha, action, and drama have been toned down, the series amplifies the comedy to amazing proportions. A must-see.
As arias has correctly noted, there is also a book series out. If you look around, there's a thread here with the link to a translation of the book. Also, there's a manga (licensed by VIZ? or someother) that follows the storyline pretty closely. They're worth checking out too.
FMP is one of my favorite animes of all time, so I strongly recommend you check it out. FMP! first season is available on DVD anywhere, though second season (Fumoffu) was licensed recently, so you'll have to wait.
