How long is the manga?

1. If you're talking 'bout US licensed, nope.

2.If you like Tenshi no Konamaiki, you'll gonna love this one. A little echiier than Cheeky Angel but i love it. A laugh a minute manga. Hope this gets animated.

3.The manga ended last year at err... 52(not sure)?

I love this manga. But don't take my word for it, just Dl it at:

It's 6 vols.

I liked it, though I think it had too many filler plots that didn't really add anything to main plot, and the ending was left too open. A decent read anyways.

I thought Pretty face was great, the art is really good. I didn't like Tenshi no Konamaiki but I did like this. I think it's because of the ecchi ^^. It's somewhat of the same concept as TnK but it's less serious. Are all 6 vols available in english? I'm pretty sure A-M went to 37.

I just happen to come with this manga due that the title appealed to my interest, and, oh boy, did I was prepared for a surprise.

Pretty Face is an almost all-out shoujo manga with just a tiny (a real tiny) speck of shounen spice, wrote by Yasuhiro Kano and serialized by Shueisha in 2002.

This is the tragic (or fortunate?) tale of Randoh Masashi, who has been for about 3 years in a row a national karate champion. Randoh is your typical high-school student hooligan. He really loves badly to the bone fighting and violence, he's the leader of the gang, he likes to mess with everyone that gets in his way; especially for the students of the Judo club who are rivals to the Karate club that he's boss to.

Because of his bad*** attitude and I-don't-give-a d*** personality, Randoh has not only achieved bad reputation among the students (detested even more by the girls, of course), but also by the school council and teachers. However, there is only one girl (an always standard in all romantic shoujo's), Rina Kurumi, who has been secretly in love with Randoh ever since middle school, but since Rina lacks the courage to confess before him, she's just helpless but to gaze on him from far. Although Randoh is awared that Rina might have a thing for him, just as he's embellished by her cuteness.

Now to the point. The problematic issue around the plot is narrated on the following:
Randoh won the National Karate Championship for the 3rd year. He and his gang comrades board the school bus and make a racket about his leader's genius skills.
Of course, their behavior is not left unnoticed by a group of their same school female students who condemn their behavior, and labeling Randoh as the devil who has disgraced their school. The other boys just yell at them shut up, and Randoh can't help himself but fixing his gaze upon his fellow classmate, Rina Kurumi, who she's been staring at him for a thoughtful time. However, Randoh disbelieves that Rina could have a serious thing for him due of his bad reputation and violent personality.

Anyways, all students leave the bus except for Randoh because he's still far from his home destination, so he decides to kill time by taking a nap. However, what Randoh doesn't know is that going to be the last time for his self to be like he is now. A car ahead of the bus made a sudden stop, the bus driver tried to no avail to skid sideways, but the bus impacted upon the railway fell off the cliff.

......Randoh wakes up vaguely since his consciousness still lags and is greeted by the sight of a nerdy man with glasses that happens to be a doctor. Randoh is notified that he's in a clinic and has been in comma state for over a year. The guy who treated him is Doctor Manabe and explains him that the accident severely disfigured him so the doctor was forced to take upon extreme measures to save him.

Dr. Manabe hands him over a picture of his old self after the accident. (A pretty nasty view even if you're Darkman in IMO) Randoh looks upon his hands and arms and notices that he has lost a fair amount of muscular mass and tone. Dr. Manabe explains that since he remained unconscious and unmoveable for a whole year, it was naturally for his body to suffer a serious diminishment of his corporal mass without proper food and physical fitness and just receiving medical supplies only.

Randoh demands him for a mirror since he wants to take a look at his face, and Manabe hands him over. When he looks into it, Randoh became silently astonished for about 60 seconds and finally explodes into a burst of raging flames.
It happens that Manabe is quite not just a particular doctor, but a plastic surgeon, and he had this demented idea to reconstruct Randoh's face to look like just exact to that of his fellow classmate, Rina Kurumii.

Randoh instantly begins to beat the pulp out of the doctor and demands him to restore his face. The doctor explains that after the accident, there wasn't any kind of ID with a picture of his former self, so instead the doctor took out a picture of Rina that Randoh secretly kept on his wallet. Seeing the picture, Manabe realized for granted that it was Randoh on the picture, and the rest is history.

However, although Randoh's face was altered to that of a female and his body physiologically change to look female-like, he's still a healthy boy both inside and partially on the outside!!!!
Manabe is quite a perverted guy who has a crush on cute girls, and after witnessing the miracle of his work performed on Randoh, he just had one more thing to accomplish in order to transform Randoh into the perfect dream-girl. That is to remove Randoh's *manliness* that still hinders the almost female beauty that he is now. (Un)Fortunately, Randoh woke up at the exact moment when the old, perv Doctor was preparing for the sex surgery operation, so Randoh's *manliness* was safely spared (Phew or Damn?)
(Another note, Randoh's chest is also plain and flat. The perv doc wanted also to put breast implants on Randoh. How sick :uhoh: )

Randoh cannot accept this reality, but Manabe comments him that if he's gotten a picture of his old self, he will revert his face back. The only problem Randoh has none and still insist he's Randoh Masashi's for good sake. However, Dr. Manabe comments him that cannot be true because Randoh Masashi has been dead for a year after the accident happened.

Randoh wanders alone in the city with no place to look or home waiting, as in his present condition he's unrecognizable by no one. He learned his parents moved out of town after they presumed him death and decided to carry on. Randoh's afraid that he's got no one that cares for him, that he's surely going to forget his old face, and the most terrifying of all that thinks what if he randomly encounters with the real Rina Kurumii whom Randoh's face is now exactly like hers.

Matters couldn't have gone from bad to worse when Randoh just had happened to meet Rina at that moment. The encounter between the two has devastated Randoh expecting the worst to happen, and then Rina clings onto him, sobbing and murmuring: Onee-chan.

Randoh is brought to Rina's house and introduced to her parents who are just sulking and grieving, as well. Rina hands him a family picture album, and it happens that Rina had a twin sister exactly like her, named Yuna.
(But how cannot tell the difference that Randoh's hair color is blonde, and Rina's dark )

Father Kurumii explains that he (confused for Yuna) used to be closely bonded to Rina, rather like soulmates than like sisters. They went to do shopping together, like the same fashions as also the same food. However, one day Yuna had a grave discussion with the family because the parents allow Rina to enter the high-school of her choice, but they wouldn't allow Yuna to apply for a beautician career since it was her dream. Yuna furiously left home without letting the family know about her whereabouts, and due to that Rina blamed herself to be the source of Yuna's trouble, being severely hurt for her sister's loss. That's til Rina found her again (She presumes Randoh to be Yuna due that his face and physique are almost exact to hers)

Rina cannot help herself to cry, but now that Yuna's return to them, she'll make an effort to make amends to her sister and spend time together just like in the old days. Listening and watching Rina's affection for her sister, Randoh, for the first time ever, is touched by Rinas' feelings and realizes to better understand her. Randoh has decided then while he's looking for his picture, he's also taking the place of Yuna Kurumii and is going to do everything possible to search for the real Yuna. Until the day the real Yuna is found, he's going to stay like a (pseudo)girl living in Rina's house as her twin.

However, that's just the start of the troubles ahead for Randoh. Since he now will have to make sure his secret is never found out by Rina, her family, and anybody else. Also when Randoh takes on the bold step to assist the same highschool along with Rina (it happened that Randoh and Rina were classmates in the same school casually) that will be the start of future mishappenings and wacky situations he must have to bear with it.

This manga has been scanlated for over a year by #akatsuki-manga. They have volunteered to take upon the bold feat to translate "Pretty Face", chapter after chapter.

If you ask me this manga is crafty and comedy clever. I'm eagerly looking forward to an anime adaptation for this manga. And I hope that the anime adaptation to be produced by the same studio that made Midori no Hibi. Since, I happen to almost finishing this series just as I came to Pretty Face.

Are they giving Pretty Face an anime? Normally they don't make animes for mangas where the author cracks under the pressure and runs home crying to mommy because he's too popular. Besides, it ended a fairly long time ago.

So what!! There was a long gap of six years when D.N. Angel manga became serialized first, and then the anime adaptation was produced later on in spring 2003.

The same goes for Chrno Crusade manga. The manga was published way back in 1999, and then the anime was released by very late 2003.

Time is not a constraint that matters, did you know :nono: ?

It is viewers interest and audience preference trends that make anime producers to be encouraged on investing to make an anime series, at several ocassions.

Analyze first the factors and reasons, before taking for granted the facts, next time.

I think it had a rushed ending because the joked waned.
You can only do so much for that kind of story.
Make it longer and the jokes becomes redundant.
(Not that i'm complaining, i love Pretty face.)

Kinda like what might/will happen to midori no hibi manga soon...

Actually, it was canned so the author had to drum up some sort of ending, rather than just leave it hanging.

There are 2 rumors for why it ended as rushed and shittily as it did. The first is popular amongst american fans and the other isn't. The popular one is that the Japanese audience didn't like it enough for it to continue. That's possible, although it really did enjoy pretty good sales. Much better than what Watsuki's getting for his alchemist sword whatever it is crap.

The second is that he cracked under the pressure of making a popular series (having to continue making it funny, the deadlines, etc). Logically, this one is more believable, since like I said before, it was making enough money to validate keeping it.

Conclusion? The mangaka's a pussy. Or it was unpopular. Either way, it won't have an anime.

And before you go around pretending to know what you're talking about, a manga's start date holds no relationship to the anime in any way shape or form. It took Hajime no Ippo 8 years to get an anime. Monster started in the mid 90's and ended like 4 years ago and just got one now. The differences between these and Pretty Face? Pretty Face was canceled. They don't like cancelling things, and when something is cancelled, they don't particularly like parading it on national TV.

Now this is denifitely where I agree with you, snoopy. Other examples which I mentioned earlier are D.N. Angel (manga) & Chrno Crusade (manga).

I just feel bad that Pretty Face (manga) will undefinitely never get the chance to be adapted to the screen, although it enjoyed good commercial success at its time.

Maybe in an uncertain future some producers or studio will take into thoughtful account investing for an anime adaptation, but that likely would never happen.

What I know is the manga was serialized in Shueisha by year 2002, so I want to know when did the last volume was published?

P.S. Is it true that the ending is that really crap shitty?

pyu
2004-06-25, 10:33
I don't know if Pretty Face was planned for six volumes or not. However, the humor and plot is pretty straight-forward.

As stated, the main character takes up the identity of Yuna, the mysterious 'twin'. In the process, all kinds of jokes and hijinks are explored. There are other characters that come in, making the story more interesting. Mostly related to female nudity and the male main being stressed out to cope with these situations.

The ending is okay - the real Yuna makes an appearance, etc, etc.

I don't think the ending is rushed. After all, there is so much you can do - and the themes were getting semi-serious at the end. Oh well...

snoopy
2004-06-26, 00:19
It was considered 'rushed' becasue they didn't really lead up to the ending at all. It just kinda ended with maybe a few weeks of foreshadowing that could have been leading up to anything (and the people reading the weeklies sure as hell didn't expect it to be leading to the end).

And it ended at the beginning of this year, if I recall... I'd have to check though. But if you think about it, 6 volumes equals one and a half years of weekly serialization.

And yes, the ending is crap. Well... let me rephrase, everything surrounding the ending is crap. And the ending is rushed. It leaves you with a kind of "What..." feeling.

I've heard another one.

Shounen Jump, while acknowledging that the series was quite popular, had reached the conclusion that the storyline that the author was planning on was unsuitable for their target audience, and cancelled the series, giving the author some advance notice. Rather than move to another magazine (like for example, Trigun), the author instead decided to wrap up the series and move onto a new project.

I bought the 6 volumes and the mangaka gave a closing epilogue.

All he said was that he had planned several endings (and he showed the storyboards for 3 of them) but used the one that was published with some fear of the readers' reactions. But he was satisfied by the response. No word of why he ended it though. But it seemed like he just wanted to end the series for the moment.

He continued with a gaiden on the adventures of the characters at an onsen after the concluding chapter though. But it was a one-off gaiden.

What happened in the other endings? 1. Randoh returns to the Kurimi household and straight out confesses who he really is. But it turns out that Rina's father is actually Masashi-hu, his father! He also went under the knife of Dr Manabe. Then Rina's mother also blurts out that she is Masashi-ko, Randoh's mum! Same thing. Lastly Rina in turn blurts out in shock that she is actually Randoh's younger Brother, Masashi-ji. So while the whole Masashi family stands looking at each other in shock, then the caption pops up "Where is the Kurimi family...?

2. Randoh is in a coma and lying in bed just right as if it was after Chapter 1. His face remains hideously scarred and Dr Manabe stands over him wondering if he's dreaming. He's supposed to be in that state forever... Then Yuuna(Randoh) rushes over and kicks Dr Manabe away, screaming "Don't use this kind of sad ending!". A caption "This story is just a fiction" passes.

3. The one we got in the series. :p

For the first ending, where does Yuna fit in to this since "she" is supposed to be a twin to Kurimi and there is stuff about Yuna everywhere in the Kurimi household? The Kurimi household existed before Randoh got into that accident with the bus. This ending wouldn't make any sense at all and is really impossible. Can anyone explain how this ending would have happened? It would be funny if they used this ending and instead of having two sons in the family, they would have two daughters.

The second ending is the one that seems to be kinda boring since it makes it look like nothing has really happened and is all a dream. I don't like to read manga that has too many chapters and then realize that I wasted my time reading a dream.

What was the ending used in the book?

What was the ending used in the book?Read it when it is available in any form :p It is not really tragic as I was initially led to believe from some of the other posts. Rather it was quite an open ending with a definite closure (you'll know what I mean when you read it). Safe to say is that it allowed the Gaiden to be drawn after the conclusion and the possibility of a short second series (which of course seems unlikely since the series ended like what? 2 years ago?) but to me, I felt it was an adequate or nice end to the story.

Pretty Face was a fantastic comic. It took all of the basic elements of a gender switching title, but cranked them up to a new extreme with the most bizarre cicrumstances imaginable. And of course, the only thing from keeping the storyline from being all out shoujo was the panty flashes.

When I start my own billion-dollar animation studio, Pretty Face will be my first project. Seriously, the Canadian government will fund anything.

Pretty Face manga, Volume 5 Chapter 41 has been released today by #Akatsuki-Manga.

So I randomly picked up this manga through A-M, and for some wierd reason, it's quite amusing. After three volumes now, though, I'm really starting to look for a clear-cut ending... It's true that a whole host of new characters has been introduced, but I find myself somewhat reluctant to wait on them for development and drama. All the same, it's an interesting read, and the art can be awesomely cute at times.

Btw, I know Akatsuki has been keeping up on the project. They released ch. 42 not long ago. Any there groups still working on it? (Possibly at a faster rate than AM?)

I like ranma and gotten into Cheeky angel. If anybody knows gender bender out there please tell me there english names. I can see how that ending would work because when the accident happen, the family changed names and the younger brother became the younger sister at the same time the father being Dr. manabe means He first finished his youngest then was working with his older child(the reason the youngest child was because they wanted new lives after tragedy so to make that more realstic he became a she so people wouldn't recognized his old self.) So basically Randoh's father chose for Randoh if he would be a girl or not.

but if you are a guy, you probably feel disturbed about a guy having a girl's face lol
(i did get disturbed for a while, had to get used to it)

you going to laugh, then cry because it finished =o

Thats why fanfiction writers like myself can make a sequal to the story.

It's a good manga overall. Even though it has no story line once so ever, lost sister? sorta old well, that's that. Though it get 10/10 for total comedy though.

anyone know what the mangaka is drawing now?

Mx0, a new series serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump. 21 chapters released as of this week.

It follow the misadventures of a teenager who unexpectedly entered a magic academy involving the use of magic cards following a series of unfortunate and fortunate events. There's one catch though...He can't use magic!!

It's the usual YasuKano materials, so the usual antics from Pretty Face from the fanservice, comedy, overall craziness, shonen action can be found in Mx0.

heh, some chapters of pretty face really got me laughing. It would be great to have a sequel but the chances of that happening are quite slim :(

I found this at the borders and started reading it, seem ok so far

but if you've read towards the end, I need to know before I continue on

was the fifth person on the bus her real sister? I REALLY hope it's not so.

Wow what a weird manga, yet it's strangely entertaining. A bit dissapointed with the ending but the girls are really nicely drawn.

*sigh* well i just finished reading this but sad to say that it really was quite short.

Though I hope this can be continued somehow with a sequel but as everyone said before, it can't. Although Mx0 isn't as bad, I'd also like to see more stories from some of the other characters too since they were kinda left out. Oh well... loved the series

I wish it would have gone a little longer though... this truly was funny

is it that short? the NA release of book 3 recently came out. it was pretty good.

there is a lot of fighting in the story, but its done comical. not like in midori hibi, I thought that was too violent.

most shounen jump titles are entertaining. and I always like the price.

they introduce a 2nd doctor in book 3. he's pretty amusing.
