The 2 most obvious would be Lain and Boogiepop Phantom. Also check out Shingetsutan Tsukihime.

Lain

Narutaru starts out like a sort of Pokemon clone, but toward the end, it's DAMN dark and disturbing.

Like, when they decide to stick a glass or something up this girl's vagina and then kick her in the stomach, so that it will break. And afterwards, when said girl goes nuts. Nasty show, really. Pity it ends.

BLAME! is a good, short series which makes no sense at all.

Soul Taker is another.

as well as Texhnolyze.

a personal favorite of mine is Cat Soup. (1 episode ova)

RahXephon is a really good one to watch then. The series though, not the OVA.
It's a deep and very complicated anime although it's not as morbid as you may want it to be. On the other hand you could also check out Noir; very mysterious.

Ouch!

Anyway, why dun you try Chrno Crusade too? Hmm, judging from the storyline that I have read in one of the fansites, I reckon that it may be a little dark anime too. :D

I would suggest Kousetsu Hyaku Monogatari. Some guy smashes another guys head in with a rock in the first episode. It kinda scared me so I only watched one episode.

I strongly recommend Hitsuji no Uta, one of the better dark psychological shows to come out recently.

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned Evangelion yet.

Perfect Blue is another very obvious choice. Perhaps Alien Nine and certain parts of Utena would qualify too.

Of course, the best of the best is simply Serial Experiments: Lain, isn't that so, Lambda?

Well, personally I dont care for Serial Expierments: Lain but I do love Hellsing, and thats kind of "dark" and I guess Berserk is a bit dark also...but I think they are in a different way that you want. And, I've heard some quite dark stories about Narutaru...

I'm not sure; I've been finding it very difficult recently to decide whether I prefer Lain or Evangelion. Lain gets the avatar because it's got the best still images ever, (Abe is a genius), it's aesthetically perfect and it's got such an amazing and fundamentally interesting and perception-distorting set of themes and storytelling method that nothing else can match or even get close to, but Eva's got the best direction and ensemble cast I've ever seen, its breadth and scope are incredible and the paths it forged were probably necessary for Lain to exist in the first place.

Anyway, they're both magnificent.

I can definitely agree that Narutaru is really fucked up(sorry for language). The first 5 eps will lead you astray but the last 5 eps just blows you away. Koutesu aka Hundred Stories is an extremely "dark" anime. It goes for the jugular in every episode. I highly recommend both. Be warned though because Narutaru deals with children in the messed up shit, could be highly offensive.

I tend to agree to that phrase from "Lain" but I also like almost all the stuff I read here... the rest I am going to see later and decide....

Just one comment on Shingetsutan Tsukihime... it is a good series with a "gloomy" atmosphere but that's not the center point of the storie nor it is the motive for me whatching it... this is a impossible love story where the greatest this and also the focus of the script is to try to show the love between Arcueid and Shiki... the rest is just the setting! What I like most in this story is the Charisma of the characters. I loved when Arcueid described the way she was cut off into 17 pieces... that's the moment when she falls in love with Shiki.

Try Blue Submarine No.6.

Although its short with only 6 episodes, its has nice cg and really twisted villians. :)

Boogiepop is licensed, so you won't find any here, and you can't ask for alternative download sources here either.

But then again, it probabbly isn't illegal for me to, completely without suggesting any course of action which might lead to breaking of the law, mention the existance of other means of getting anime, such as EDonkey or Kazaa Lite.

Not that I'm suggesting you should use either. I mean, I'm not. I sure as hell don't have both installed right now.

I'd agree with the earlier recommendation of Perfect Blue... I know a lot of people who really didn't like it, but I loved it, thought it was excellent. Very much what David Lynch might make if he got into anime ;)

Just one comment on the Narutaru's suggestion as a dark anime... well, there's no doubt that this isn't the thing that I would expect to find at "Kid's Station", it has some really dark scenes (if they only showed it throughly), but the problem with this anime and the reason why I won't recommend anyone to watch it is that THERE IS NO STORY! None of the 13 episodes make sense in the end... maybe just the last two.... but those don't hold any relation with the previous eleven... of course the characters are the same, but no one can figure out anything about how they are going to act... I was more pissed about Sakura and what she does in the end... WHO IN THE WORLD SAW THAT ONE COMING... or those episodes where the story is all about making a point just like the one they go fishing... what a pointless point... it didn't really reflect in anything later on... that anime reminds me of a bad acid trip... there is nothing in conection with anything and in the end... you will just regret they time of your life that you lost seeing that useless and pointless anime. You have been warned DONT WATCH IT!!!!

Hellsing wasnt dark and disturbing, they took the violence and blood thing too far and it just became all comical.

Bottle Fairies is pretty disturbing in a way.

I really recommend (after seeing till the 7th episode) kousetsu hyaku monogatari aka Hundred Stories... it is a really twisted terror anime with tons of weird stories and the best part is that this anime tells a lot about japanese folklore and their horror tales .... it is really something no one should skip...

Obs. I just resented a little the fact that there is a gang of three undead in this anime and even though I like these characters a little, I think the story should be more focused on the writer (main character) instead of leaving the gang to solve the mess in the end of each episode... the result is that this anime looses some of it's natural creepness... the writer character is really nice and I love when he is listening to a new kadai he just found out... that's the best part of this anime!

"dark" does not mean violent hentai. Geez.

Can't believe nobody mentioned Wolf's Rain or Gilgamesh. I loved Wolf's Rain but I couldn't really get into Gilgamesh myself but I know it has a following.

I don't think Wolf's Rain is anything close to dark and it tends to be something more like a fairy tale instead of facing any questions or problems more complicated than that. The only thing dark is the setting (post apocalyptic future). But the script is all childish and lame really...they always come up with softer and milder ways of describing the actuall things that might be happening, not to offend or pervert the little children that might be watching...

As for the violence note... well, violence might be just a way to measure how much of the story is being told, just like sex and the materialistic interests behing it all. I most animes I saw the "evil character" is someone that just woke up one day and decided to be a bad person...and nothing more to it. In other words, violence is just one of the most common elements you would find in any story, so it is a little strange not to see any and a little boring when it is always concealed or sugar coated. If you want to tell a story, just tell it! Don't make lame allusions to what is really happening.

SEX for instance... tens of millions of people are doing it right now and why is it that sex is only shown in hentai anime or labeled like that? It is so common in any ones life! Cowboy Bebop, for instance, when Faye was pursuing someone, she found him in bed with another guy. That's something that can happen but it is more usual to anime scripts to show perfectly decent people just brushing their teeths when their doors is broken down. I don't take more than 15 minutes a day brushing my teeth, what are the odds?

They spend the whole series being abused and ostracized and hunted, beaten down and used, eternally questing for a safe place...ok I won't post a spoiler but if you've seen the end you get what I'm saying.
I think there's more meaning to it that you might see on the surface...i.e. the individual's quest to belong and yet maintain individuality, overcoming adversity and deciding when it'll overcome you...etc.

As for the violence note... well, violence might be just a way to measure how much of the story is being told, just like sex and the materialistic interests behing it all. That's just lack of character development. Has very little to do with light and dark, just skill of the writer.

Why would a story need violence?? There are plenty of great animes that have little or none. It's not a big element in the life of anyone I know, do you really think that people have to make their stories violent to be "good"???
I mean, if it's a part of the story, that's all well and good...but I've seen some anime where people are constantly gushing blood and losing body-parts and heros and heroines are constantly doing things no "good person" would ever do to another living being. Flamethrowers and woodchippers and eaten-by-bugs, oh my.

SEX for instance... tens of millions of people are doing it right now and why is it that sex is only shown in hentai anime or labeled like that? It is so common in any ones life! a) the hell it is. b) it's only shown in Hentai because that's the only way most people would ever see sex from a third-person perspective. You just don't watch people having sex unless you're getting off on it. Would you have writers putting in scenes of diarrhea or gyno visits, too? The theory here is that this stuff is some kind of art, and some things you just don't show in art unless there's a specific reason, a point of some sort.

Cowboy Bebop, for instance, when Faye was pursuing someone, she found him in bed with another guy. That's something that can happen but it is more usual to anime scripts to show perfectly decent people just brushing their teeths when their doors is broken down. Er, and exactly how much time per day do you spend in bed having sex?? Really, average it out. I mean I understand your point but I think that the door being broken down while people are having sex shouldn't be any more common than say, while cooking dinner, or paying bills, or talking on the phone to a friend/relative. If you wanna go for realism, you gotta go all the way.

I agree to that. I was only telling that some stories do have violence and gushing blood but they still won't show it. When violence is there, then it is. There is no way to really tell a story in 2nd World War time omittind all the gore in it.

Obs. I also love animes without violence. FLCL is one of my favourites... Lain as well.

When I say display sex in an anime without it being hentai is the focus of the script and the actual way the sex is displayed. In hentai it will focus on the genitals while in any other movie (non anime) that is not porn they will just let you know, without doubt, that the characters are doing it (if that is significant to the story I mean.. and of course humans are really moved by that so it is usually significant). Otherwise you are just letting everyone to speculate, like with Batman and Robin (though it was a children's story there were some adult versions of it or at least the market for them, and everyone has a theory of Robin's other role in this story hahaha).

Er, and exactly how much time per day do you spend in bed having sex?? Really, average it out. I agree to this one... I was just saying that when doors are kicked down there should be some non usual things behing it sometimes... specially depending on whose door it is. Some people from mafia are always doing something nasty.

I think I saw 3. Like I said, I didn't really like it. It sorta struck me as a darker version of E's Otherwise, so far. I suppose I should at least watch the other two episodes I've got before I dismiss it completely, since I downloaded 5, huh? :P

Gilgamesh is alright, not the greatest, but interesting.... I do have to agree with slc about it being a darker version of e's otherwise.... you know, with the powers and the teleporting........ but it's still kinda weird and dark.........

100 stories is another good dark anime in my imo........
