Hi Everyone!

I didn't know where to stick this post so if its in the wrong place... sorry.

I'm just wondering if anyone else is having the same problem as me...

I am using the latest version of the Bit Torrent Client v3.3 and whenever I download anime... my computer locks up... then crashes... and I have to hit the shut down button manually to turn off the computer. Or in other instances... it'll do the lock up thing... crash... and then restart itself. And just today for the first time... it locked up, crashed and I got the blue screen of death. Am I doing something wrong? Or is there a fix for this? Is anyone going thru the same thing I am? Sigh... so it takes literally over 30 crashes before I can download one full episode sometimes... and I've noticed that after awhile... my computer slows down and stuff starts getting errors... which has never happened before I used Bit Torrent. Is there anyway around this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!! :)

PS >> Animesuki You Rule!! :) :) :)

Edit:: WAHHHHH! Someone save me from this nightmare lol... it just crashed my computer again...

Hmm I am kind of stumped but maybe you should try an alternative BT Client such as ABC (Yet another Bittorrent Client) or Shadows Experimental Version. Might work better for you...or not. I really dont know but cant hurt to try :p

Hi, could you please post a little more info about what your system specs are? Which version of Windows are you using 98/2000/XP? This problem sounds strangely like one I read on the old forum....

Hmm, *Summons resident BT expert* - FlashSquirrel does this ring a bell?

Yep, Yep, I does.. ^^

Try to use the Exp 3.2.1b for a chance, the new client is still working a little buggly.
Maybe use the Azureus client too, since its different from all the other clients.
Never get stuck on a single client, try to check the other clients too.

Well don't really have a solution for your problem.
But my friend has the same problem while running win98.
We tried using 3.2.1b and the regular one so am guessing it's the Win98 :hmm:
Gonna try that Azereus one anyway thnks for that one Flash_Squirrel.

If you were monitering the downloads, were they rather high? Also if your on DSL, do you have an Alcatel modem? and do you have a Linksys LNE100TX ethernet card? If so read the bittorent FAQ. It should help you resolve those problems.

Answered here in here, regarding blue screens:

I actually work at a tech-support place, and my knee-jerk reaction to such problems is to run ad-aware or spybot search and destory (do a google search) and a virus scan (theres one called AVG http://www.grisoft.com/ thats free). I doubt the problem has much to do with BitTorrent. You could run the program msconfig and see if theres a bunch of junk being loaded on startup.

And as someone else suggested, you could just run Linux. :-P

Running:
Windows XP Pro
FA311 Netgear Card
(I'm on cable Toshiba modem PCX2200)

I have ad-aware and I run it very often. I've also tried the older version Bit Torrent and had the same problem.

Yeah I'll try another client and see if that helps. Was stuck on a single client because I wasn't sure if the other ones were any good. But at this rate... it can't be any worse hehehe.

Thanks!

Or it may be time to update your driver for network card. This was what happened to me a while back too and after I got the latest driver installed, my computer stopped crashing whenever I use BT.

Out of all the BT programmes you listed, which is the best? i mean, which causes the least problems and is easiest to use?

Though choice..

Depends on your tastes after all, I personally use the Eike's Exp 3.2.1b, I find it stable, fast, not bloated with stuffs (hmm, the shadow's light is a good example) and full of the most useful stuffs.

The new client (3.3) IMHO is a little too young, it needs some updates and some fixing, and I just hate the new allocation system.

The shadows is... a so-so client, it uses an old way to analyze the connecion and the trackers, and the new version (the x.x.7) is full of bugs (check the shadow's site, they say that the version is still buggy themselfs ^^;).

If you are lazy, there is the ABC client, it allows you to compose a pretty nice queue with clients, and works fairly good, I'd check it out if you want to use a good program. BTW the creator of the ABC client is a member of the board, so you may be able to talk with him about the problems you might have with the client.

I'd go with Eike's 3.2.1b, never had a single problem with it (I had a REALLY hard time trying to pick screenshots of the errors, trust me) Check it maybe.

A special note to the Azureus client, The only (Not sure though) JAVA client of the bounch, check it too if you still have problems with the other clients.

Yeah I read somewhere doing a search on google about the crashes and the blue screen of death and someone recommended that I try updating the drivers for the network card. I downloaded the drivers but dunno how to install it.

I'd goto my computer, manage, device manager, right click on my network card, update driver, install (advanced so I can point to file), then it says:

Cannot continue the Hardware update wizard...
The wizard could not find a better match for your hardware than the software you currenly have installed.

So does that mean the one I have now is already currently up to date? Or am I just a dummy and not installing the drivers right... the folder does not have a file in there where I can click to install the drivers... so I dunno.. stumped... ::feels like such a noob::

I just tried the ABC client... its simple and easy to use but it still crashes on me... although I must say it crashes less then the original Bit torrent... so its an improvement I guess lol.

I'm going to try the Eike's Exp 3.2.1b and see if that works better for me and if that doesn't then I'll try the java one...

I'll let you know how that goes ;)

Note to Flash: who's that character for your avatar? (sorry me noob) she's a cutie >.<

you should take note of the model of your network card and go to the website to dl the latest driver. that's what i did.

I use the Burst! BT client. Works rather nice for me and I like it a lot. No problems at all. I'm running Win XP Pro btw.

I had the same problem. Then I noticed that if Win98 have this 'feature' that it turn off the hard drive for saving power. I switched 'Shut down hard drive' option from 1 hour to never and after that bittorrent works like a dream. Im sorry that I cannot give you better instructions because I'm using finnish windows and I don't know how to call these options english.

Okie here's an update....

I finally got the network card drivers to update... and YAY! It hasn't crashed the computer since and I don't get the blue screen of death anymore. I'm soooo happy... this means I can leave my computer on forever to download anime... I had to do a lot of babysitting before... kinda sucked because then I couldn't leave my computer on when I'm sleeping.

But YAY! Its been working since! If you guys have the same problem... definitely try updating those network cards...

Mine is a Netgear FA311.

I'm a happy PiGGiEE now :D

Flash_Squirrel lists all the alternative clients in his BitTorrent Step-By-Step. That's why he didn't feel the need to link it here.

:( I thought it was my network card drivers that needed updating... and the weird thing is after I updated it... for 4 days straight.. it didn't crash once on me... even leaving the computer on at night time to dl animes...

But for the first time today... I got the blue screen of death again... I notice.... my dl speed will start to go down... then my internet connection craps out... and then the blue screen will come on... so usually when I see the dl speed start to go down... I'll restart my computer b4 I see my blue screen. But during start up... windows has been doing a disk check... and its never had to do that b4.

Anyways... I thought I figured out the problem... but I guess that wasn't it and it just worked for awhile... so its on to trying out yet another bittorrent program. Maybe the 4th one will be the charm. There's gotta be one that isn't buggy and will work for me.

I've used numerous P2P programs and other programs and it is the Bittorrent type programs are the only one that craps out on me. :(

Well let me give another one a try... and if one works... I'll post it here in case someone else is having the same problem I am.

Hmmm or maybe I need to ditch my Netgear FA311 network card for another... or my Linksys BEFSR41 Router for another... acckkk to expensive to go thinking that just yet... :: prays that another bittorrent program will do the trick ::

Oh the current one I'm using right now is the ABC Bittorrent program.

Well I have a somewhat similar problem, I don't really see the blue screen of death so I'm not sure its the same as everyone elses problem (Though it does come up on some rare occasions while I use bit torrent so maybe)

Anyway I'm using a Dell Inspiron 700 something MHZ celeron CPU laptop running windows 98. I've got a Linksys network card. The reason I think my problem is different is because it usually just freezes my computer, but instead of some problem with the drivers, I think its my CPU crapping out. Bit torrent apparently uses a lot of system resources because the fan on my computer only kicks in when the CPU is in full gear.

Anyway because I'm worried about my CPU, I'm reluctant to leave the thing running over night, so I usually have to baby sit and kill bit torrent so the fan can catch up with the CPU.

I'll update my drivers if only because I haven't tried that yet. Though If someone can recommend me a client that doesn't hammer my CPU that'd be most appreciated. If not, then maybe a client that constantly saves data to my hard drive so I can resume where the computer crashed. The one I have only saves data if I cancel the d/l.

BTW, I'm no computer expert, the CPU thing is just my guess. If its sounds like something different please tell me so I can rest my fears.

No No... its the same problem as me. Most of the time what it does is it crashes my computer... I mean my screen will be frozen and then I'm forced to push the button to turn it off and start it back on. Occasionally I'll get the blue screen of death but not too often.

I'm not sure how to solve your problem... but try updating your network card drivers... I did that and its much better now. I don't have the crashes as much anymore and I'll see the blue screen of death only once in awhile. Before updating the drivers... it would crash every 5-10 minutes of dl'in... so sometimes it crashes over 20 times before I can finish one episode... so try that and see if it makes a bit of a difference and like the others said... try switching to another bittorrent client and see if it works better. I've already made 4 switches and so far... I like the ABC one just cuz I can see all my dl'ins in one window as oppose to the many when I use the regular bittorrent program. It still crashes on me here and there but at least it doesn't do that too often anymore to where I had to worry about leaving my computer on.

Well... I'm still looking for solutions to these problems... so if you find an answer let me know :)

Oh... I don't worry about my CPU working too hard and overheating anymore... I got the Thermaltake Extreme Volcano 12 heatsink and can adjust the fan speeds accordingly... I must say... that fan kicks so much a$$... and it didn't cost that much either. :D

I just set up a new PC and I am using the Netgear FA311 network card with the latest (and only) drivers available for it. I, too, get the IRQL blue screen when I download with Bit Torrent for a few minutes. My computer freezes every few seconds right before the blue screen comes up.

What I wanted to ask you is, do you remember what the blue screen said? Did it mention the "NDIS.sys" file? If you remember, please let me know. I think I'm going to buy another network card. I have a feeling the device driver for the Netgear FA311 isn't entirely compatible with certain programs on Windows XP.

I fixed my problem with a different client called call PTC, one of the earlier versions. The thing uses a helluva a lot fewer system resources than the last client I used, so it doesn't melt my CPU unless I have a high upload speed. anyway, if your problem sounded like mine, I'd recommend you try PTC.

PiGGiEE
2003-12-15, 13:36
Cool! I'll have to try PTC too... cuz all the other ones seem to eat up alot of my system resources...
I might also just end up getting another network card... I've been having too many issues with other programs when using the Netgear FA311.

A topic thats come up a bit in the BT developer mailing list is about BitTorrent hogging CPU time. Without getting into the details, BitTorrent establishes a lot of simultaneous connections when its downloading from lots of clients. Apparently, sometimes WindowsXP chucks a spack when it goes over 61 connections. I'm not sure if this is the same problem you're experiencing, but if it is, there's an option with most clients to limit the number of simultaneous connections - set it to 60 and you should be fine.

(Note: The standard BitTorrent client from Bram only allows you to set these parameters from the command line)
