View Full Version : Marimite S2 Ep.07 (official thread)
And so, the new year has begun. No more Youko-sama, Eriko-sama, and Sei-sama.
The anime didn't start off with Noriko's "Where is this? What year am I in?" Atsuko-san and Miyuki-san didn't even appear with Touko-chan...
Shimako, aka the new Rosa Gigantea is in melancholy...
I was impressed that they actually changed the OP shot of "Maria-sama no niwa ni...":
...Hey! Wait a minute! I understand Noriko should be there as she will soon become Shimako's soeur in the following episodes, but why is Touko-chan mingling with the Rosa Chinensis family!?
Yumi is worried about Shimako's melancholic atmosphere.
Yumi: "I was anticipating on something to happen with Sachiko-sama during the Spring break, but there was nothing..."
Hmm, a little foreshadowing of Yumi & Sachiko's soeur relationship in "Rainy Blue" here...
Yumi and Yoshino are classmates for the first time in thirteen years...and so are Tsutako-san and Mami-san!!! I hope they bring out Yamaguchi Mami out a little more (too bad this season won't get to Shimura Takuya's story)...oh, wait yes she does have an important part in the next episode! wa-i.
Nijou Noriko-chan makes her debut! Banza-i!! Hmm, she's a little bit more reserved than I expected from the novel. But Shimizu Kaori's voice seems to match her tone about "being different from the rest."
Noriko-chan and Shimako's initial contact underneath the cherry tree!! U...utsukushii... and had an aura of yuri-ness.
Sei-sama and Yumi at Lillian University cafeteria. Is it just me or does Sei-sama, (oops, I mean "Satou-san" ^^;) awfully looks a LOT like Rei-sama after she cut her hair?
And more foreshadowing of "crumbling" Sachiko-Yumi soeur relationship...
Matsudaira Touko-chan debuts! Kugimiya Rie's voice acting is astonishing - it always amazes me how she is able to do Rizel from "Rizelmine" at one extreme and Alphonse Elric from "Fullmetal Alchemist" on the other...and her portrayal of Matsudaira Touko makes a stellar first impression. Hmm...I wonder how people who haven't read the novel will make on Touko-chan's first impression (I imagine it would be somewhat negative as most people who have read the novel as well....only to turn 180 degrees into one of the favorable characters later)
And we get to Noriko and Touko's encounter...minus Atsuko-san and Miyuki-san. As Touko-chan explains to Noriko who's who, Noriko realizes that the person she couldn't take her eyes off at the cherry tree was [the current] Rosa Gigantea.
Shimako seems to be happy now.
Noriko's background revealed..."How ironic that I am an avid admirer of Buddhist statues and temples, yet I am student of a Catholic high school"
Dang, the Shoguji temple is freaking huge than I imagined! And...Shimako's father makes his first appearance. Congratulations.
Yeah! Shimako in traditional Japanese kimono! M,moe~... And, by now you know what Shimako's secret: "I am a daughter of a Buddhist priest and temple, how contradictory that I attend a Catholic school."
And more yuri-like aura at the bus station...
Preview of next episode....rap-style!? "Ichou, Ichou! Sakura, Sakura!"
fufufu...Noriko and Shimako...

The current Sei reminds me of King from the King of Fighters arcade fighting game
It's funny though how she started completely effeminate, then became slightly unkempt after Shiori's incident, and finally became boyish after graduation
Not that I mind that look. I think it's sekushii
Is it just me or is there a continuity error at 7:48? I'm referring to Touko's scene where she's pointing out the Rosas to Noriko. In the distance shot, Sachiko was clearly between Shimako and Rei, but in the closeup Sachiko is now suddenly on the right with Rei in the middle. Noriko of course only had eyes for Shimako... :)
Nijou Noriko-chan makes her debut! Banza-i!! Hmm, she's a little bit more reserved than I expected from the novel. But Shimizu Kaori's voice seems to match her tone about "being different from the rest."
I really like Noriko's voice... I'm undecided on Touko and want to hear more of Touko's seiyuu before I figure out whether I like her or not.
Sei-sama and Yumi at Lillian University cafeteria. Is it just me or does Sei-sama, (oops, I mean "Satou-san" ^^ awfully looks a LOT like Rei-sama after she cut her hair?
Hehe, I thought she *was* Rei the first time I saw her in the previews. On repeat viewings, Sei's signature smirk clued me in. I'm going to miss wild-haired Sei... ;_;
Preview of next episode....rap-style!? "Ichou, Ichou! Sakura, Sakura!"

Although this shot in the preview passes quickly, a very tall girl caught my eye. Looking at the hairstyle, it matches all of the Kanako fanart I've seen, and she towers over the rest of the students, so I am guessing this is probably her.

You don't like Touko? :) She is quite a troublemaker, isn't she?
This episode may be my best episode of Marimite ~Spring~ so far. The story behind Shimako and Touko is not less beautiful than Sachiko and Yumi, although I am still thinking why Shimako is doing that.
Regarding the preview, it looks that seiyuus are having fun, especially Sachiko's seiyuu. Quite outrageous from Lillian standard, but it is nevertheless very funny.
Sachiko is the one that sing the most in the preview, probably the Itou Miki-san is releasing the tension of playing serious voice ? ^^;
but after this episode, Shimako is glowing bright with with rose family's charm, more than before. her bored expression in the meeting also reminds me a lot of Sei, although less "don't try to go near me"

I'm sure a number of things in this episode are meant to mirror the last one -- from Shimako's gradual unattachment from the Yamayurikai, to how she and Noriko met underneath the Sakura tree (perhaps the same one where she saw Sei for the first time, one year earlier..). ^^
As for that probable first shot of Kanako that Portable mentioned, I saw a number of people on 2chan bring this up as well, and i think you may very well be right..
OMG! SACHIKO WAS RAPPING!!! XD XD XD!!!!!
*imagines Sachiko in hip hop clothes with a mic*
O_o;;;;
Seems like Touko is gonna stir trouble again, as Shimako and Noriko will get closer in a souer relationship to be.
Honestly, they should just name that Sakura tree 'White Rose Family Recruiting Place' or something ^^
if they do, all the eccentrics of Lillian would starts camping and waiting for the head of the white rose family and ambush her when she goes there ^^;
maybe then there'll be like three political parties in the school for each family :D
oh god the rap... I'm sooo gonna have to do some karaoke for that for giggles Xp

Usually they release every bit of music , so i dont see why not. Only time will tell.
Are Buddhist monks in Japan under different restrictions from the norm? I mean celibacy, etc, etc.
Cause I can't imagine Shimako's father being a monk when she was born... o_O
ehemm.... being a Buddhist doesnt mean that you are a monk :p
It really depeds what sect of Buddhism. The most common sect over here doesn't require celibacy as far as I know.
OMG...I didn't expect Noriko's reaction would be so... blatant. I thought if she stared at Shimako for one more minute, she would start to drool. :D
ehemm.... being a Buddhist doesnt mean that you are a monk :p
I'm a Buddhist - and I'm not a monk. So I know what you are talking about. But unless the raw is playing a trick on me, Shimako's father was wearing the raiment of a typical Buddhist monk.
From my own (Chinese) perspective, when a person takes the tonsure and becomes a monk, he severs all relations with loved ones and family and follows a code of conduct that includes celibacy.
Unless, the monk in question wasn't Shimako's father. Or do Japanese monks follow a different path?
Not trying to stir up any religious issues here, I'm just being curious. :)

Celibacy: the view of a Zen monk from Japan
Soko Morinaga
Buddist monk. Rector of Hanazono University
Examples of the marriage of monks in Japan can be found as early as the Heian period (794-1185). Moreover, beginning from the time of Shinran (1173-1262) and Ippen (1239-1289), who were known as hijiri, or wandering mendicants, there are many examples of the marriage of monks during the Kamakura (1185-1333), Muromachi (1336-1570), and Edo periods (1600-1867). So from the point of view of ordinary Japanese people, the marriage of monks was not regarded as something out of the ordinary.
An edict, number 133, issued by the new Meiji government in 1872 ordered that monks should be free to «eat meat, take wives, and shave their heads» as they chose. From that time, the secularization of monks proceeded rapidly. In Taisho in 1920 the Jodo (Pure Land) School of Buddhism issued a set of Regulations for Temple Families. From this time, the treatment of temple families became an important issue. In this way, the marriage of monks, instead of being viewed as a question of doctrine or the precepts of monastic life, came to be taken up as a problem of personal attraction of temple management, or as a matter affecting the lives of temple families. The problem, then, became less a strictly religious one, and more a matter of how to deal with the inheritance of temple headships and the social status, rights, and property of temple families.

Nijou Noriko-chan makes her debut! Banza-i!! Hmm, she's a little bit more reserved than I expected from the novel. But Shimizu Kaori's voice seems to match her tone about "being different from the rest."
I love Noriko's voice too the first time I heard. I also love Kaori Shimizu's performances as Lain (S.E.Lain) and Toka/Boogiepop (Boogiepop Phantom). She's the same age as me but she has been around as a seiyuu for 6 years already.
Wahoo, thanks Ayu. You guys rock.
yaay thanks ayu! lotsa <3 for the ayu team for another wonderful release!
shimako-san looked so sad at the beginning. then she looked so freaky with her hands out standing in front of the sakura tree...... :upset: maybe it was the really long arms and skinny body (not proportional) the animators gave her for that scene... but she looked so heavenly from the overhead camera view~
yoshino and yumi-chan were cleaning a toilet?
yumi-chan looks so sad as well, lonely for her onee-sama. since i read the spoiler for the parasol portion of the novel, i'm heartbroken whenever there is a reference to that event (all those screencaps in the futabas don't help :( ). sachiko-sama, don't stop loving yumi-chan!!
noriko+shimako was so lovely! it felt as if shimako was a different person, with her tractor-beam eyes~
OMG...I didn't expect Noriko's reaction would be so... blatant. I thought if she stared at Shimako for one more minute, she would start to drool.
yah! she got caught by shimako's tractor-beam eyes!! my room felt so quiet during the scenes where they were making eyes at each other.... as if time stopped. :eyespin: shimako just seemed so much like a different person, so quiet and melancholic with such powerful eyes..... it's like you become stunned after you look at those eyes... in season one i thought of her as a pleasant, quiet girl. now she erm, 'feels' more powerful or something.
noriko-san's voice is quite pleasing to the ears. same can't be said for touko, though. i guess she'll have to grow on me. kj1980 is right, i nearly jumped out of my seat when touko hugged sachiko-sama!!! oii she belongs to yumi-chan!!!!!
so far, this is episode 7, and frankly i miss yumi-chan. she gets so little screentime nowadays. the lovely feeling i get when i watch sachiko-sama and yumi-chan together is missing. :( will noriko and shimako act love love, or is 'eye-to-eye making out' on the menu this time around? my eyes were dry for this episode too~ :p
gogo marimite rap! dou naru no? :p and is that rei sizing up noriko? surprised that she would do that.
Ayu we loooooove you ^^!

Thanks, Ayu!
Wow, Touko's intriguing. I think I might like her. :uhoh: Or maybe I'm just impressed with the fact that someone could be so close with Sachiko that they'd openly embrace her with other people present. Especially when it seem like Sachiko's always worrying about appearences. That killed me too. Sachiko tells Touko to address her properly but does she react when Touko hugs her? Nooooo.
Aw, Shimako. Good to know that she seems a bit happier after meeting Noriko though. Speaking of Noriko...Holy crap is she cute. She seems really taken with Shimako. Good for 'em both.
On a final note, Sei's haircut rocks. XD

Wow...I didn't think THAT many people didn't like Touko. It's too early to pass any judgement on her for me. She's gonna be an interesting character though if she can stir up that much trouble between Sachiko and Yumi. (For some reason I just thought of Eris and the apple of discord of the Greek Myths. XD)

At first seeing the way Touko acted, I felt immediate disdain for her. That was my first impression.
But, like The Dreamer, I'm not completely set on that impression, since her character still seems a little ambiguious from that introduction. I mean, it only seemed as if she'll become a rock on Yumi's relationship with Sachiko; at the same time, it's not clear that her only role in the plot is to cause trouble between the two, or stir jealousy from the other girls.
In any case, I always like it when new characters are introduced. This also means that there'll be some more focus on Yumi+Sachiko - if our assumptions on Touko's role in the plot scheme are correct. :)

I loved Noriko. She is pretty in an unusual way. And her and shimako, well you know :naughty:
Now as for Touko I don't know, her voice didn't bother me at all in fact I liked it. What really bothered me was the touch of arrogance I perceived in her character? I will hold judgement for now and see her byplay with the other characters.
yoshino and yumi-chan were cleaning a toilet?
They were cleaning the sinks. I reckon it is quite common in Asian schools to perform some cleaning duty. At least during my secondary school (er, senior high?), we were required to do some additional cleaning duties besides the usual ones of keeping the classroom clean daily.
I'm not too sure if it has been discontinued in Singapore (we're becoming more 'Western', I suppose), but I reckon its something 'untouchable' in Japan (I guess).
I read a while ago that Sakamoto Maaya would be one of the new seiyuu's so is she either Touko or Noriko? I can only compare her voice to Escaflowne so it is hard for me to tell ...

Nijou Noriko is done by Shimizu Kaori. She is probably more known in the United States as the seiyuu for Iwakura Lain from "Serial experiments lain."
Matsudaira Touko is done by Kugimiya Rie. She is best known as Alphonse Elric from "Hagane no Renkinjutsushi" ("Fullmetal Alchemist") and Rizel from "Rizelmine."
Goodness, I really really dislike Touko, something about her voice just sets me off. She sounds like spoilted brat. Is it just me or does it seems like she's showing off to Noriko when she intros the roses to her. Could be the way it's worded in the sub or the tone of her voice but these lines stand out to me: "I just came from the Rose Mansion", "It's like a room for the Student Council, but it's only for the Roses" Kinda like she's showing off her connection to the Roses.
*Sigh* I'll try and keep an open mind but something about her just rubs me the wrong way.

Yes, they are just too cute together. Noriko is a nice character. I liked her right away.
The whole episode was very heart warming for me. The white roses are now really my favourite roses.
I also liked Touko. We needed another character causing some entaglements imho. I hope she will play that role well.
I am looking forward to see more Touko (but preferably more Shimako and Noriko :p ).
Hmm, just re-watched it and I noted how much.. prettier Sei looks with her new, shorter hair-cut. More tidier and clean looking, yes?
Awesome work as usual, Ayu. Noriko and Shimako really are such a great pair -- it's so heartwarming.
And I also liked Sei's new "neat and tidy" look a lot. ;) I do hope we see more of her.

Finally I get to see this one. Unfortunately, it ended before I could form a real impression of Noriko, so I guess I'll have to wait until ep 8 for that.
Touko, on the other hand, kinda stood out a little more. It's hard to tell this soon, but I think I'm going to like the little first-year trouble maker. :D

This episode is probably the best I've seen in the entire series so far, nearly everything about it is perfect. Well, maybe not perfect, but better than most other episodes. (Although, to be fair, it also has one of the ugliest buses I've seen in all of anime.)
I like Shimako and her slightly off-beat optimism (that is probably derived from her Zen Buddhist upbringing). While I really liked Noriko's perceptiveness, she is really derivative by now, after two and one honoray members from the White Rose family of "loners." I wonder how she'll develop as a character.
Ever since the first episode I've pegged Sachiko's as the "seme yaoi boy," and that scene in the rose mansion (and the whole intentional/unintentional teasing of Yumi) further reinforced my suspicion. :p Touko is quite a presence and I really want to see more of her, though I hope that she won't pull an Asuka Langley. I would rather see someone unapologetically cutting like Sei.
Sei's new haircut does make her look a lot more boyish doesn't it? (Whereas her old hairstyle felt more manly, sort of like a clean-shaven version of Yamanabe or whatever his name was, the ronin-sensei.) :p A question for those who speak Japanese though: Is Sei trying to put some distance between her and Yumi by telling Yumi to call her "Satou-san," or is there some subtlety in the original Japanese that didn't make its way into English?

Perhaps the one who "fansubbed" that scene mistook the translation as the original Japanese dialogue was more along the lines of:
"The sakura tree was an important aspect in the relationship between Sei-sama and Shimako-san"
I was also ammused by this, especially when you consider that cherry blossoms are only supposed to bloom one week out of the year. I swear that 90% of anime must be filmed during this week :heh: .

Haha! I guess the Japanese must really like that pose :p
I can't see Yumi doing it though...
Finally someone who also didn't like Sei's haircut. It's not even that it doesn't suit her, because it may well represent a new shape that her personality is taking with the transition to college (just my theory), but it's the fact that I just don't think the boyish look is as charming as the longer and messy hairstyle she had before.

This episode was so much fun. Many emotions sparked for me :)
I had only one thing to say on Sei's appearance...OMGWTF!!!!1!!11 :p Sei's hair was so much of the Sei experience...*sigh* She almost looks...*GASP* grown up...almost.
When I saw Touko all over Sachiko, I think I thought exactly what Yumi must've been thinking, "who da hell is dis biatch and why is she all over my (her) Onee-sama!" Chalk me up as another "I don't like her very much..."
And the Noriko and Shimako scenes left me breathless. Soooooooo gorgeous, they practically didn't need to say anything at all. ^^ I want more, can't wait for ep. 8!!

Long live the Long and Messy Hairstyle! :)
It seems that Sei's hair length just keeps shrinking: she's got waist-length in second year, shoulder-length in third year, and now she has short hair in college. You think she'll go bald like Sinead O'Connor when she graduates? :p

I thought she said she met Sei in the cherry blossoms, which would be true. I'm totally digging these episodes. It's so...nostalgic, maybe meloncholy(I was grabbing for some word like that, not sure what the feeling is) to watch the cycle of growth. All the en boutons have moved on to be Roses and the prior petite seours will be having their own petite seours.
Just out of curiosity, what kind of people are watching this show? This is a big departure from the typical Initial D and such I watched. I just happened to stroll in this forum and got curious about the whole lesbian thing. It's not a big thing IMO except maybe Sei's relationship with that girl that I forgot her name. That was a bit on the unhealthy, obsessive side. Anyways, I love this show. The only other thing that I can say I watched similar to this was maybe Kare Kano.
Just out of curiosity, what kind of people are watching this show? This is a big departure from the typical Initial D and such I watched.
i am a person who likes shoujo manga. and love stories. and romance novels. and comedy. and i cry when i watch anime. :p
i think sei grows her hair back to the messy style, no? all the doujinshis and oekaki sketches show her with her messy shoulder length hair. long dark-haired beauties are more to my taste, though. :)
Just out of curiosity, what kind of people are watching this show?
Lol, I guess we are quite a group.
As for me, I could more or less be called something of a lightweight anime-fan. I watch several shows that my friends pick up, and dislike the most of them (actually, I'm not fond of generic anime at all). I pick up a few shows now and then on my own but drops most of them due to lack of interest. Most stuff that catches my fancy thou, (despite the whole negative factor I still love anime as a media-concept), are things that are way out of mainstream. My favorite shows being Kino no Tabi, Haibane Renmei and Noir (throw in Juuni Kokki and Lain too) kinda proves this.
Marimite caught my interest because well, ok, I don't mind shoujoai obviously. Any kind of pairing is fine with me as long as they are well-motivated. I do think Marimite sticks out a lot because of this certain point. It doesnt ride on the fact that it is shoujoai to make itself hugely popular. We dont see panty-shots, weird film-angles or fanservice a la fiesta. The relationships in the show develope on an accord that is natural and not because it is featuring "OH YEAHS!!! SH0uJoAi-SlasH B00bxB00b AcT10N!!!!!". If you want to fantasy away, no one is going to stop you. But if you want to watch a refined show about different relationships and their developing basis, you can do that just fine. Props.
Currently watching: Madlax, Samurai Champloo and yeah, Marimite ^^

It's the first time I post here, although I've read many threads (I had pb with loging in -_-)
Well, Marimite is really stricking ! The calm atmosphere that reveals feelings is great (soaps should take lessons by watching it, jeez...)

I usually like anime, especially shoujo ones, but this is the first ESU anime I've watched: SAIKOU !! I have cried when watching ~Rainy Blue~ ... and felt depressed for the day...
At first, I had a preference for the elegant Sachiko, but now, my eyes can't get off Shimako! (I want the same hair style!! but my asian hair don't want to make the soft curls like hers T_T or maybe I'm not skilled) I thought she was beautiful when I watched the first season, but that was all. I'm very glad the stress has been put on her in this season :)
I was a fan of sei-sama (and still am), but Shimako really took a place in my heart!

I love "esu" things, and pretty things, and I'm overly sensitive
I'm a college senior, and I started watching this show in the spring during finals period. Before that, the last time I saw much anime was in middle school. Then I liked Escaflowne, and anything that looked like shoujo comics.
I also have become a fan of the White Roses & their subtleties... even apart from the novels, their relationships seem literary. I've appreciated this season in a new way from the last, though also am one of those who miss Sei-sama's messy cut.

People who love anime, I guess. I watch all kinds (genres) of anime I mean all kinds... If I haven't seen it, I'll watch it sooner or later. I'm currently watching this shows:
Ai Baby

Gantz s2
Girls Bravo
Elfen Lied
Godannar s2
Initial D 4th
Kyou Kara Maou
Marimite Haru
Naruto
Prince of Tennis
Samurai 7
S Champloo
Shinobuden

See how broad my genre list. I haven't seen the latest eps of most of the so they just keep piling up in my HDD. Action to yuri, I'll watch them if they're intersting enough... :)

I'm into slow, calm anime's, mostly shoujo or slice-of-life,I am pretty fond of schoolkids/romance stuff as well. Some series I really liked are To Heart, Kanon, Da Capo, Kiminozo etc
Apart from that I really love adventure anime like Chrno Crusade, FMPanic, FMA, Wolfs Rain, basically anime with a good story.
But I watch pretty much everything (or at least i give it a try)
Currently watching : fafner, Aishiteru ze baby, Bakuten, FMA, GitS, Maritime, Naruto, Melody of Oblivion, Champloo and Tenjoo Tenge
Currently reading (manga) : Alice 19th, GTO, Ai Yori Aoshi, Yokohama Kadaishi Kikou

Just out of curiosity, what kind of people are watching this show?See sig :p
I'll admit, I was intrigued by this show because it was supposed to have teh 13zb!4nz, but this is a very beautiful show, and I don't even think about the shoujo-ai aspect anymore, it's has grown on me and even the little things make me so happy (like the Noriko/Shimako scenes). I've steadily grown out of the fanservicy aspect of anime, and look for much more...but I still like teh babes :p

Just out of curiosity, what kind of people are watching this show?
Heh, so many people are replying to this and interested in this question that it could be the subject for a thread in itself :)
When I first started watching Marimite, I had no idea it was supposed to be shoujo-ai. And I still had no idea until the Sei ep with that girl from the past. But I didn't really mind that aspect of it, as it fit the overall tone and mood of the show.
Interestingly enough, when I started watching it I thought it was a really girly show, and that only girls would like it. But from forums like this I'm surprised to note that the majority of Marimite fans are apparently male... The only explanation I can give is that males were drawn to it in the first place from hearing about the shoujo-ai factor :p though like others have stated that's only a minor factor; it's not a dominant, major theme in the series.
But really, the show is quite unique, I've never seen anything like it. And so are the people watching it I guess ^^

Yeah, me too, I didn't know anything about it, I took the file "just to try", and I really loved it, because of the atmosphere, the nice art and also, because I liked the way they talked ^-^ *so polite and calm* I thought it would be a good thing to watch the show for my japanese... awsome voices and beautiful intonations, especially concerning Sachiko-sama.
I thought: this is the kind of show that would never interest most of boys watching anime.... But I'm glad boys enjoy it too ^_^
And yes, Marimite is very unique to my eyes! ^o^
