The raw is out.

Indeed it is. And just a side note for now, but I definitely think that the animators aren't portraying half of the amount of expression in Noriko's face as Kaori Shimizu is putting into her voice.. ^^;

But then again, what else is new..?

Secondly, I simply loved Noriko's tussle with Sachiko. It was really quite... refreshing. :)

No, my japanese is still very basic.

Another episode dedicated for Shimako and Noriko. It looks that Noriko is a very stubborn person. She is willing to argue with Rosa Chinesis when she criticized Shimako for letting Noriko to call her Shimako-san.

I think the did a superb job for this episode. As the first installment of the "Rainy Blue" and "Parasol o Sashite" arc, the way they portrayed the awkward sense of atmosphere of the Yamayurikai was enacted masterfully. I wonder if non-novel readers were able to "get" this tone?

Also, did anyone notice that Rei-sama was reading "Ibara no Mori 2" at the beginning of the episode?

One part that I was really looking foward to, but was cut out in the anime, was the part where the three second-year students were walking in the student hall in melancholy. I believe this was an important scene which gives an introductory pointer that this and the following two-three episodes are taking place simultaneously on the timeline. As a matter of fact, the first year students courageously going up to their second-year members of the Yamayurikai to say gokigenyou was left off. Although, the part where a single Rosa Gigantea (Shimako) fan says gokigenyou to Shimako is shown....I wonder if they'll continue doing this similar scene for Yoshino and Yumi respectfully.

Noriko's true characteristics and personality begins to shine (finally), as she goes on a marathon spurt of explaining her reasons on not joining any club to Shimako. This sequence in front of the St. Mary was done with a great applaud by me.

I'm glad they didn't cut the Tsutako-Shimako dialogue scene. This is one part from the novels that I liked where Tsutako-san shines as a great friend and advisor to her peers. Now, if only Mami-san had more appearance roles in the anime...

And so, Noriko-chan officially becomes a member of the Yamayurikai as the new Rosa Gigantea en bouton by "borrowing" Shimako's rosario. One thing that was interesting was how they changed the following dialogue in that rosario scene:

Novel
Noriko: 志摩子さんが卒業するまでそばにくっついて離れないから (I will always be at Shimako-san's side until graduation)
Shimako: だったらもう、私は寒くないわ (Then, I won't be cold anymore)

to

Anime
Noriko: 志摩子さんが卒業するまでそばにくっついて離れないから (I will always be at Shimako-san's side until graduation)
Shimako: 不思議ね・・・こんなにずぶ濡れなのに、少しも寒くないの (Isn't it strange...how [we] are wet, yet [we] aren't cold)

And the addition of Noriko's word 片手で仲間を、もう片手で私をつかんでおけばいい (Cling on to your friends on one hand, and me on the other) was also surprising. To give you the truth, I actually found the anime-version portrayal of these dialogues to be better for a postive outlook for the future than the novel.

Noriko claimed my heart with this episode.

Her squabble with Sachiko did it all, finally a girl with a little spunk against the school traditions ^^ YAY! I've gotten someone to relate to.

Noriko sounds unbearably cute when she gets mad or excited. Touko sounds cute all the time. And the voice actresses for both of them are doing an outstanding job so far.

I watch the raws without understanding any Japanese, so I was a bit confused by the rosary thing. Why did Shimako not put it around Noriko's wrist?

I felt this episode was tailored towards fans who have read the novel. Quite a lot of Shimako's monologue were left out which I think are quite pivotal to the story. During the scene of Noriko's first visit to Yamayurikai, Shimako was looking to and from Rei, Sachiko and Noriko, with a worrisome expression. You have to read the novel in order to know what is on Shimako's mind at that time. I wonder how many viewers can actually get it if they haven't read the novel beforehand.

A very subtle thing to watch out in this episode that will be one of the key points in the next episode. Take notice of whom did Rei ask to serve tea when Noriko first visited Yamayurikai. Too bad they didn't show how they were seated when they were "interviewing" Noriko. Maybe they will put it in the next episode.

I love how Noriko handled the rosary thing

"This rosary, can I borrow it?" XD

go girl!

While neither Rei nor Yoshino are my favorite characters, it seems like we got their rumble coming in the next ep. I'm looking forwards to see more of Rei in a kendo uniform ^^

Could you please summarise what she *was* thinking about?

As a non-novel reader, I thought Shimako was acting oddly worried and protective of Noriko, like she wanted to make Noriko feel welcomed and not feel grilled by Sachiko & Rei but didn't know how to do it. Shimako isn't someone who would impose her will over someone else; I think she'd consider that a burden and I don't think she'd want to trouble Noriko with any obligation or expectation. Shimako also looked a bit lonely as she looked around the room and saw how at ease everyone looked. This episode was all very reminicent of the Sei/Shimako ~ Haru 6 episode.

You actually got most of it. She was indeed worried about if Noriko can fit in Yamayurikai as smoothly as Yumi did, especially after what happened in the Cherry Blossom episode. During the "interview", Rei and Sachiko were asking Noriko about her family, her present living arrangement, etc, which Shimako thought the other two Rosa should have already known. She was getting the feeling that the other Yamayurikai members were putting on "being nice" masks just to make Noriko feel comfortable. She was afraid that once that mask was gone, there will be severe frictions between Yamayurikai members and Noriko. This caused her breakdown when Sachiko confronted Noriko later on because it's like her worst nightmare comes true.

Not sure if I explained well enough. Maybe kj1980 can add some more comments on this.

Thanks for your explanation, lordwu. Shimako is really her own worst enemy, with no shortage of internally generated angst. Having said that, I do find the fierce protectiveness between Shimako/Noriko very cute and endearing...

So let me get this right: Shimako wants Noriko to fit in with the Yamayurikai so badly that she's just coming up with worse case scenarios. But of course she doesn't say any of this to Noriko, since she doesn't want to burden Noriko with her concerns or any perceived expectations. Good thing Noriko's there to cut through all that nonsense. :)

Shimako fears that if Noriko cannot fit in Yamayurikai then there may be a chance that Noriko will leave her. That's part of the reason why she didn't bring Noriko to Yamayurikai at first and also the reason why she was so desparate to make sure that Noriko can do well with Yamayurkai members when she was pressed by the 2 Rosa to bring Noriko in. She wants to be with Yamayurikai and be with Noriko too and her worst fear would be to make a choice between the two. And that was exactly what Sachiko brought up during the confrontation...

Wow, I just watched this episode and Noriko is really growing on me! She's such an awesome foil for Shimako, and the two are just so perfect together. I also agree that the seiyuu is doing a fantastic job so far in giving Noriko such a lively and expressive voice.

Thus, in honor of Noriko's greatness, I have changed my avatar. :)

Episode 9 is out.
Wheee~ more Noriko!
She had a quite fight with Sachiko, most others are very traditional but she does not have same kind of background (like she said she is more buddhist than catholic) so I understanded why she didn't like their traditions that way.
And lordwu's explanations make sense, it was impossible choice for Shimako to choose between them and Noriko, so Noriko chooses for her.
Too bad that they didn't show Yumi's reaction to that arguing, a first year student challenging her onee-sama like that. :D

Last scene where Shimako and Noriko were sitting under tree and sun was shining through clouds was truly heart-warming.

I loved the new naisho - will there be more for Haru when they come out on DVD?

As for episode 9 - it was a very interesting episode. Strange to see Sachiko become so dominant. Can't say I liked how Noriko conducted herself at all; she was outright rude to Sachiko-sama, however presumptious the latter was being.

Nevertheless, a very enjoyable episode. I am very much looking forward to the next!

thanks for the episode, ayu! nice work again. :)

i had mixed feelings for this episode. it felt so rushed! after getting a dose of 'i look in your eyes, you look into my eyes, time stops" scenes in the previous episodes, i was surprised to watch both noriko and shimako speak to each other so quickly, in front of maria's statue. it felt as if they were belting their lines to fit a certain timeframe. :( are they supposed to be speaking so rushedly? or did it seem that way because noriko's face was rather impassive while her voice jumped around?

i think watching this episode in half speed would make it much more enjoyable. it didn't feel right when a reflective shimako responded to tsutako so quickly, as if anxious to reply.

but i did get the uneasy feeling shimako had when noriko came into the yamayurikai discussions, and the subsequent meeting of noriko and the yamayurikai. more of uncertainty and fear, rather than akwardness as kj1980 mentioned. the scene where shimako is led by goronta to the university, it felt rather out of place....

i was looking forward to yumi-chan's date with sachiko (from the end of the previous episode), next episode maybe?

Well that's one of the problems we can see in the marimite series... beatufylly voiced characters... but that lack quite a bit in animation (even if the art is great)

Aside from that, now that ive seen this chapter for the 3rd time (now with subtitles! Thank you Ayu), while I found the chapter a little rushed as well, I quite liked it... a beatiful and well portrayed conclusion of this ask IMO :)

You wouldn't expect Sachiko to be so brash. It works in solving the problem, but it comes across as a little less than elegant. Youko always seemed to manipulate people so effortlessly. Good episode, but I would have slapped Noriko.

The waiting was really long! thanks for the fansub. This episode was great, I didnt feel it rushed, and although I was surprised about Noriko's reaction towards Sachiko I didnt hate it at all, she started the argument when she considered that Sachiko was atacking Shimako, which shows how much she cares for her, that was very nice.

What I really liked was that Noriko did stand up to Sachiko. All first-years seems to rever the Roses like some kinda half-deities/half-idols while Noriko just throws it all in her face. No seniority system for her, not Noriko-baby! Nossiiir! ^^

It's really to bad that Sei and Noriko never was in Lillian at the same time, those two could have piffed up the schoollife something trememdously together :D

Interesting to see the different reactions to Norikoīs behavior :D.

I really like Noriko more with each episode.
Outwardly Noriko seems to be calm and friendly, but donīt poke her with a stick... :bash:
Noriko is honest and defends her interests with passion if necessary.
On the other hand she is not a revolutionary. She seems to be able to adopt to the system too a certain degree.
We seem to have somewhat similar personalities, though I am not that fearless or independent of the opinion of others as Noriko.

Hehe, if I was Noriko I would've slapped Sachiko. ;) Although I know the whole argument was concocted by Sachiko as a straw man designed to push Shimako into accepting a soeur, Sachiko always seems most inelegant with her manipulations, as other posters have noted.

I can understand why some people disapproved of Noriko's brashness, but keep in mind that Noriko's *initial* reaction was to accept the criticism. She only started getting super defensive *after* Sachiko brought Shimako into the conversation. And after the previous episode, we know what Noriko's instinctive reaction's going to be when she feels Shimako's been attacked... So all in all, this scene just seems to me like Maria Ceremony part 2...

Anyway, it was great seeing the translation for the Shimako/Noriko scenes in front of the statue and under the cherry tree. They were most enlightening, and gives me hope that these two won't end up like Sei/Shiori... ^^;

No, and yes. Maybe that's why I'm getting less and less enthusiastic about Marimite. It seems that the production just wants to pick out all the popular scenes from the novels, fit as many of them into one episode and move as quickly as they can to wrap up the anime. What happens is that the camera jumps all over the place with no clear thread guiding the viewer unless we have read the novels, and the voice actresses rush to fit all their dialogue in the 30 seconds they were allotted. In the first season, there's a very clear thread connecting all the episodes: Yumi. We were looking at everything going on in Lillian, all the students in Lillian through Yumi; and when the events just about to fly off in every direction, the camera will return to Yumi to pull everything back into order. But in Haru it's like Yumi is relegated to the background. Sometimes the story is about Eriko (actually that one is not bad), sometimes the Roses, sometimes Shimako, and then the camera became totally fixed on the white rose family for two episodes. (Not that I dislike the attention on the white roses, which I consider the only interesting group of characters in this anime anyways.) It just makes me wonder sometimes, "why is the director making us see this, other than the fact that it might have been a popular, and perhaps a pivotal scene in the novel?" To be quite honest, I was at quite a loss during most of the 25 minute shuffling of scenes.

The Ibara no Mori II is a nice touch, which simply hints on the Shimako-Noriko connection. I wonder if this attempt at making a clear-cut "reversal" of the Ibara no Mori I. That would explain the difference in tone between the anime and the novel (as kj1980 has explained). Ibara no Mori I's view is basically, "life is painful, time is fleeting, make the best of today, for it will be gone tomorrow." And in order to reverse this and get a happy ending, Ibara no Mori II is obligated to say, "friends come, friends go, but as long as you have friends, you won't feel cold." In order to wash out the melancholy surrounding Sei-Shiori and Sei-Shimako, the Shimako-Noriko connection just needs a bit of sappiness. (Of course, Noriko's personality also has a lot to do with it, I mean...eesh, is it really appropriate to be THAT happy about going home together? :) )

Usually I don't mind melodrama, but gosh... Unless Shimako had been walking in a desert for three days without provisions, I don't buy that scene of her following Goronta. Tsutako's line is also oozing with cheese, but I suppose that's how kids these days talk (with all the soap opera they've been watching).

I'm glad that a lot of people kind of dislike Sachiko in the last two episodes. I disliked her ever since episode one when she said, "What? You're still here?" What a nasty personality... Perhaps she's an excellent character in the novel (I wouldn't know), but in the anime it's like the director messed up Sachiko's character in the first episode, and spent the rest of the two seasons trying to patch her up but failed miserably. I, for one, don't buy her "elegance" and "inner kindness" unless I've seen it for myself, but unfortunately I haven't. Down with Sachiko! :heh:

Sachiko was intended to be severe, cold, unapproachable, and possibly even scary. It just makes Yumi's relationship special. Despite these qualities, Yumi still looks up to her. Not just anybody could be Sachiko's soeur.

after watching this episode I'm starting to wonder who actually is rosa gigantea :) Noriko seems alot more mature than Shimako, and Shimako is looking for support instead of the other way around.

I must say Sachiko wasn't too subtle in stressing the situation, although at a moment she looked really upset about the -san/-sama thing. It seemed to me she only realised later that the opportunity was there to force Shimako and Noriko to become soeurs.

Ah well, excellent episode, thanks Ayu

Sachiko's pretty clever, but she's just not as gentle about it as Youko was. Noriko rocks, as others have stated before. Rather sweet how she tries to bear the brunt of Shimako's burdens.

But Tsutako stole the episode for me. It was kind of her to try and help like that.

I question Sachiko's methods. Is it really a good idea to keep causing emotional distress to a person, especially if that person is of the frail flower variety. Was it really impossible for her to, I don't know, try talking? Besides, she's way too blunt and tells people she manipulated them. Not necessarily good for maintaining friendships.

Noriko continues to impress, though I find it odd she seems to have nothing against Sachiko manipulating her.

I am shocked by the difference in the ways Youko and Sachiko handled the white rose family. Sachiko and Rei...... saying they did not handle it too well would be a bit of an understatement. Maybe it's because their detached from Shimako, not being in the same year and all that.
