Kei's actress is 斎賀 みつき who also plays Tsukasa in .hack//sign
Sei's of course is 豊口 めぐみ who incidentally plays Black Rose
The circle is complete

Sei is cute when she tilts her head

I finallly figured out what Touko's problem is. She may not be necessarily evil, but she sure does look the part. That image of her will never change.

...Was that a sentai parody in the next previews? Ha ha..

To make it really really short,

Yumi is in the "I just got over a painful relationship and I'm okay by myself" phase

Um...if you don't want spoilers, why are you in the "official episode 12" thread at all?

Ah, Yumi got that umbrella from her grandfather, that's why she values it so much. ^^ how cute

I was rather surprised at that Sachiko was totally absent from this episode. It would somehow have been interesting to see how she was thinking of the whole thing too, I know the show is Yumi-centric (:D) but Shimako and Yoshino did get their deal of the introspectiviness. Sachiko still remains almost as big of a questionmark for me as she did way back in season 1, you get a few bits and bits from her background, but nothing really solid to base her personality on.

Are the novels only told from Yumi's year too? But then, Sei did get her share ^^

Seems that after all this, Sachiko will need Yumi more than Yumi needs her...
As Yumi finally noticed she can live normally without her Onee-sama.

Were Katou Yumi and Sachiko's grandmother soeurs when they were in Lillian?

I have heard of this a lot but....what is "sentai?"

"sentai" is basically the power ranger-like team of crime fighters trend (i.e., kamen riders, gatchaman, etc), that began in Japan. ^^

I HIGHLY URGE YOU NOT TO READ THE FOLLOWING SPOILER UNLESS YOU ARE TRULY PREPARED TO BE SPOILED FOR A GOOD STORY IN THE NEXT EPISODE

The name is incorrect.

Katou Kei is a student-tenant living in Ikegami Yumiko's house.

Other than that you are correct. It is not clearly written in the novel, but it is obviously apparent that Ikegami Yumiko and Ayako-sama (Sachiko's maternal grandmother) were great friends (most likely soeurs) when they were at Lillian.

A brief synopsis of what is written in the novel is:

A. Yumiko-san visits Lillian and meets up with Yumi, Touko, and Sei. She gives thanks to Yumi for "making me realize to meet with my beloved friend that I haven't seen in ages...and this time I can really say that 'I'm sorry.' "

B. No mention of who Yumiko's friend is made here - just that she is in grave condition and is currently in a hospice, spending her last days in a peaceful location. Yumiko-san leaves a message to Yumi and Sei to tell Kei that she will be leaving the house for a few days.

C. Flash foward to a certain scene where Sachiko and Yumi resolves their issues and tightens their soeur relationship even stronger after this crisis. Sachiko's maternal grandmother - Ayako just passed away. When Ayako's death was looming near, Ayako began to mutter the name "of a very old friend" and that she wanted to meet her one last time. Once again, never is Ayako's "old friend's" name is ever given.

D. Sachiko, wanting to grant her grandmother's last wish, began franticly searching for her grandmother's lost friend - but when she did and tried to call her house, there was nobody there - it seems that she left her house for a few days. In despair, Sachiko hung up the phone. But when Sachiko looked up, by miracle, her grandmother's old friend was standing right next to her!!

E. In a moment of thought, Yumi thought up of a very elegant lady with a white parasol going off to meet her best friend. Do miracles exist?

Hence, the novel does not note down who the "other friend" is from both Yumiko-san and Ayako-san's perspectives. But it is pretty obvious and noted that they were most likely soeurs.

I am actually really looking foward on how the anime portrays these parts - as a novel reader, I really do hope that they do leave each other's friend's name as anonymous, yet as clearly obvious to the viewers that they were just like the novel.

Ogasawara Sachiko - Currently the Rosa Chinensis. Her grand(e) soeur was Mizuno Youko. Her petit(e) soeur is Fukuzawa Yumi. Her paternal grandfather is the head of the Ogasawara Group conglomerate.

Ogasawara Tooru - Sachiko's father. Former student of Hanadera.

Ogasawara Sayako - Sachiko's mother, her maiden name was "Kiku-something."

Kiku-something Ayako - Sachiko's maternal grandmather. Recently passed away. She had a very great friend - Ikegami Yumiko, whom she was granted to see for one last time before she passed away.

Regarding "Kiku-something" surname
In the August 2004 issue of Cobalt Magazine, Konno Oyuki penned a short story entitled "Toshokan no Hon" ("The Library Book"). A brief synopsis of this story was told with a person named Miki being the main character.

Miki was a fan of a thrid-year student who was nicknamed "Saako-sama." One day, Miki finds her idol sleeping like a fairy in the greenhouse. Saako-sama suddenly wakes up - realizing that she had dozed off in the warm sunlight, she asks Miki the time and heads off to her next class.

However, while Saako-sama left as elegantly as always, she seemed to be in such a hurry that she left behind her book. The book was titled "Makura no Soushi" and it was a book that was borrowed from the Lillian Student Library.

Miki faithfully returned the book to Saako-sama. However, Miki wanted to read that book as well - so she checked the library frequently to see if Saako-sama had returned the book back. One day, the book was returned at the library, so Miki subsequently borrowed it. However, the end of the school year was looming.

Miki's peers were in a mood where they were getting autographs from their elders whom they've idolized. Miki's friend, Yasumi-san was no exception as she received an autograph from Rosa Foetida.

Perhaps Miki was not clearly thinking straight that day. As she was going to the school library to get an extension on her "Makura no Soushi" that she borrowed. There, she once again met Saako-sama. Whatever was going on inside Miki's mind that day, she asked for Saako-sama's autograph - in the inner cover of the "Makura no Soushi" that she borrowed.

Only when Miki returned home did she realize what she had done - she had ruined school property. Feeling guilty on what she had done, she decided to go and buy a new "Makura no Soushi" and gave that back to the library. And quoting from the story:

Hence "Makura no Soushi" once again returned to its classical series. However, the book that Miki bought was of a newer edition so within the purple front covers of the series, one stood out as with the newer, pink front cover.

As Miki came to this row of library books each time, her heart churns on what she had done. However, she vowed to never forget her mishap, so she would frequently come and visit this row of books.

The one book with the different front cover.

Perhaps this hurt-feeling is something that I must carry on for the rest of my life. Even if I graduate - and even if I get married and have my own children...

"Hmm?" said Shimako-san. As Yumi and Yoshino gathered, Shimako-san pointed out one section of the row of books in the school library - "this one book has a different front cover than the other series."

The book they found with the different pink cover among the purples was titled "Makura no Soushi."

" 'Makura no Soushi'...Hmm"
"What is it Yumi-san?"
"I don't know, I just remembered something"
"What did you just remember?" asked Shimako-san.
"Yes. We have this same book at my house."
"This?" asked Yoshino-san with the book she just borrowed in her hands.

"No. The 'Makura no Soushi' one. It was buried deep within my home's closet"
"In the closet? Not in the bookcase?"
"Yes. I just thought that my mom didn't like classics so I didn't give it much thought at the time."
"Well, if she hates classics, I don't think she would keep it. Besides, how did you know that it was your mom's?"

Sherlock Yoshino begins to go through investigation mode.

"Good question...I wonder why I came with that conclusion...Oh wait, now I remember. It was personalized. It read 'To Houribe Miki-san.' Houribe was my mother's maiden name."

"Ah, so Yumi-san's mother's name is Miki. Then I take that your father's name is something like Yuuichi or Yuuta?"

"...." Close. It is Yuuichiro.

"If it was personalized 'To Houribe Miki-san,' then it must've been a present."
"Oh yes, now I'm starting to remember a little bit more. It had another name on it. Ehh...what was it....Kiku-something Sayako. Wait, normally that kanji is more used as Kiyoko in that sense."

Once after Yumi had met Ogasawara Sayako-sama, Yumi began to read the kanji 「清」 as "Saya" all the time (that kanji can be both read as "Saya," "Sei" and/or "Kiyo")

"Yumi-san, your mother was a former student of Lillian wasn't she not? Maybe that book at your house's closet used to be here." said Yoshino-san jokingly.

"Oh, come now" laughed Yumi. But perhaps, that idea may not be as too farfetched thought Yumi to herself.

Goodness, Japanese people are messed up (not being rude, this just shocked me).

Miki checked out a book that Saako read and accendently has her sign the book then feels guilty that the book is ruined?

I can't see any Americans reacting like this...

-exagerates-
No...no!! Look what I've done!! My god what sort of person am I!! ::rips out hair::
-end of exageration- :p

Buying a new book is a simple thing to do, what's the big deal if the cover is a differnet colour?

-exagerates-
Now I must go and see the books everyday, and see...Yes! See for myself what an awful person I am.. Look me...Look at the colour that doesn't match!!
-end of exageration- :p

"Perhaps this hurt-feeling is something that I must carry on for the rest of my life. Even if I graduate - and even if I get married and have my own children..."

o.O Gee wiz...it's not that big of a deal. And she hadn't messed up the original book on purpose so why beat yourself up so bad...

It's a cute story though, that her daughter passes those same books from all those years earlier..But the beating herself up over something pointless like that, is completely over my head.

It's just a fictional story, so you can't use that as a generalization of any culture. Besides, anecdotes like this do sometimes transcend the boundaries of anyone's imaginations. Kinda like "Meet the parents" with that scene involving the cat and some paint. :D

I kept the spoiler as short as possible, but since you need a longer and more descriptive analysis on what happened there (which I left out because it is rather meaningless to write this part down on the summary):

Actually, the school librarian looked at Miki in a weird way on why she went through all that trouble in buying a new book. Students borrow books, and it is inadverdent that school books gets dirty, ripped, etc.

The librarian looked at Miki with a weird look with the quote "You know, you could've just returned it...it's not like that you are going to get penalized for some marking on the book. So long as you return it, and if we decide that it isn't fit to be checked in for the library, we can just send it back and ask for a replacement at our cost, you know?"

The point here that I failed to mention was that:

A. Miki felt guilty in "defacing school property" on a book that her beloved Saako-sama had checked out
B. That she "defaced school property" with her beloved Saako-sama's autograph
C. She couldn't just return it to the school because it was personalized to her
D. She was stuck in a dillemma where if she returned it to the school, everyone will know her "secret" (getting a personalized autograph from Saako-sama)
E. Nor did she want Saako-sama getting put on the same blame game

Out of the five guilts that Miki felt, most likely it is E. that bothered her the most. Knowingly or unknowingly, Miki jumped to the chance of getting Saako-sama's autograph. Whether Miki was thinking clearly or not that day, what she did was indirectly made Saako-sama involved in "defacing school property." The "lightness" of the act is not the point - it is Miki inadverdently pulling in Saako-sama into the blame game if someone found out.

However, it is important to note that Miki was at Lillian when Japan was still in a much more conservative standard. Especially since Lillian is a strict Catholic school, it maybe just be that Miki was too naive and rather taking such rules to the extreme - to ponder such lengths when a modern day Lillian student such as Yumi, Yoshino, or Shimako might've found a more liberal minded solution had they happened to them.

I think the quoting from the novel is Miki's "Tatemae" of "Hon-ne to Tatemae" or half of the truth. What she vowed/wanted to never forget is her bittersweet "Seishun", so she bought new "Makura no Soushi" and kept the one with Saako-sama's autograph as a memorial.

Is my thought off the point? :heh:

FubaredByAnime, I never saw Meet the Parents. *boohoo*
It's basically about a man who under the harshest conditions does the dumbest (and funniest) things to get his fiance's father's approval.

Maria-sama has elements like that, but it's for dramatic results. In the first episode, Sachiko picks the first girl she sees, Yumi, to be her petite seour so she can get out of the main role for a play. KJ's spoiler story is no more different. It's very interesting to see different character and how they act/react to given scenarios.

It has a sequel now, Meet the Fockers.

I know, I can't wait. Barbara Streisand? Hehehe.

Yumi's grandfather gave her the umbrella and write her name and school on it. Why the school name, some may ask? Because Yumi's grandfather thought it would be a bad idea for a girl to carry around an umbrella that has her home address on it.

Yes, they are in Chinese.

Well, i'm pretty sure l33t is the main provider of the marimite raws (that is, whoever else distributes l33t raws, gets them from the homepage themselves. i haven't seen l33t's stuff around lately anyhow..), and i've always gone to them for my marimite raw needs...
..but it looks like that won't be the case this week.. :heh:

i'm definitely going to have to check all the raw distributing sites i know, but if l33t really is the only group that provides the raws, i just hope that someone out there who knows how to use winny might be nice enough to torrent the ep... ^^;;

The DMHY sub I am watching right now is quite good - it has no time stamp, so I don't think it is the same RAW that l33t got off winny. Despite what everyone thinks, l33t is not the end-all for RAWs.

Anyway, the most disconcerting part is recognizing the names in Chinese after watching the first 8 episodes by Ayu. :heh:

Funny thing is, the old lady, Ikegami Yumiko, mentioned how Yumi gives her an impression she is well-bred young lady from a large and traditional family. At least that is what the Chinese subs say. Perhaps this is how the first years view her.

The nice thing was how her classmates (at least I think it was her classmates) banded around Yumi to give her support. And of course, the whole episode was about Yumi getting over her obsession with Sachiko and realising that she can live without her. :)

Touko is not disimiliar to a spoilt brat who has not gotten her way is it? :heh:

since there is no write up by kj1980 and other members to respond to, i think i'll just shoot random thoughts here and there. it was a nice episode to 'normalize' things after that dreadful emotional scene that was episode 11. with 'yumi-chan gets stronger' as the theme, i think they pulled it off rather well. strange that sachiko did not once appear, she was sick? i think it's more likely that she got so worried about yumi again until she got sick, just like last time. sigh, soeurs that are so similar, yet so different. :)

it was strange to watch how sei, kei and yumi-chan walked on the way to kei's place. kei walking first, sei next, yumi behind. wouldn't it be more natural for sei to at least put a hand over yumi-chan's shoulder? that's what one would normally do, in such emotionally-wrecking circumstances.

katou kei has a nice voice. i was rather amused by her cute blow-drying. sei going "let her do it, let her do it" made it even more amusing. is there more to it than just blow-drying? :)

yoshino was really soft and caring, unlike the previous kendo episode. :p she's a really good friend, the hugging made me smile.

i wonder what that old lady's role is in the story? just to tell yumi-chan to have more confidence in herself? i'm sure there is more story behind that encounter. it reminded me of the ibara no mori story, another old student. :)

i teared up when yumi-chan got back her umbrella.

Just finished watching both episodes...

It was great, profondly touching, and emotional, full of angst and drama. Probably the best episodes of these season in my book, together with the Rosa Gigantea episodes.

Ayu did a spectacular job. Congratulations.

Kei's actress is 斎賀 みつき who also plays Tsukasa in .hack//sign
Sei's of course is 豊口 めぐみ who incidentally plays Black Rose
The circle is complete

Ah, so Kei is played by my absolute favorite seiyuu ever. I knew I recognized the sound of her voice... (wow, Mitsuki Saiga has two female parts in one season. She's on a role!).

And naturally it was awesome to see more of Sei. :)

I teared up a bit during the return of the umbrella bit. And it's nice that Yumi has people in her class that tries to cheer her up. She's real lucky to be surrounded by nice people.

Touko..... She shows up at the worst times doesn't she. Both in eps 11 and 12. Thing could have been resolved so much easier if she did not how up.
..... Dare I say it? I wish she's... somewhere else...... (I trying to be nice) :heh:

Ok guys, its time for rejoice, and no, it's not Christmas; it's Marimite 11 and 12 coming out today. Enjoy and be thankful to Ayu while you are at it ;)

Thanks Ayu!
After watching episode 11 I thought Ayu wanted to avoid a cliffhanger and tries to spare the emotionally weak ones among us.

But after episode 12 Yumis problem is still not solved. Canīt wait for episode 13. Poor Yumi!

Forgive my lack of Japan geography knowledge but where is Fukushima? (the train station the umbrella was found) Is it really far from Lillian?
Also is Aota-sensei a one off kinda character? It seems like when his giving the umbrella back to Yumi that it's her grandfather giving the umbrella to her again (does that make sense?)

Fukushima station is in Osaka, I don't really remember where exactly Lilian is, but I guess it's the whole different island.

@_@.. although I'm not sure as to where Lilian is, I'm pretty sure it's on the main island of Japan, Honshuu. Osaka is in Honshuu as well.. the umbrella did travel a huge distance, but not THAT far... I don't think. :heh:

Sorry my bad.

According to Japan train map, travelling from Musashino area of Tokyo, where Lilian suppose to local according to a reply somewhere in this board to Fukushima. It's take from 3-6 combination of JR & Shinkansen taking from a little more than 3 hrs to almost 6 hrs.

.. Yeah, I do have too much time on my hand lately.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't Fukushima station in Osaka. A more logical sense would be the Fukushima Station in the city of Fukushima in the Fukushima Prefecture, which would be about a 3 hours train ride from Musashino.

Since most members on this board can't grasp the distance of a train ride in Japanese terms, I'll give it to you in a more understandable measurement: around 290 km = 180 miles

You're assuming then that most members on this board are American. The rest of us can think in metric, thank you.

kj is just being helpful by listing three units of distance, kilometres, miles, and train hours. :)

I really like the last two episodes, especially the fact that the attention is again focused on Yumi.

I have to say, though, I think that Kasuga Seiko, Yumiko, and the returning umbrella really seem to have something to say about life in Lillian. The one constant that I have seen is that the Lillian life and the sisterhood that the Lillian life centers around seems to be the one and only ideal that these women hold on to. Even after they have left school and gone through thirty or forty years of life, they invariably return to Lillian and their longing for sisterhood were never sated nor replaced by (supposed) heterosexual love, marriage, etc. etc. I read the umbrella to be a symbol for this view of seeing a (perhaps sacred) sisterhood (as associated to be the gift of Virgin Mary) as the ultimate spiritual fulfillment - it is a "home" that all the souls of Lillian girls eventually return to, no matter how far they have strayed, either through a misunderstanding (Yumi & Sachiko), the oppression from a hostile society (in the case of Kasuga Seiko's double suicide), or the necessity of life or maturation (Satou Sei, Shiori, Toudou Shimako, etc.).

wow.. that's deep...
But for me the return of Seiko and Yumiko represents more of a closure of events that happened in the school. In Seiko's case the heartbreak and seperation and reunion with the headmaster while in Yumiko's case the forgiveness and reconciliation between the 2 of them.
While in the case of Yumi's umbrella the return of self-confidence and the awareness that she's too dependent on Sachiko's acceptance of her actions, that there are things in her life other than Sachiko and the umbrella. As she thought in the eps, the world opened up and she was able to see and feel Yoshino, Sei, Kei, Yumiko and her classmate's kindness towards her.

That's my take on the events at least.

after seeing yumiko, i somehow feel that the story between yumi & sachiko will be a sad one, like develope into what happens to yumiko and her seour(check the novel spoiler), it must be a sad one because it makes yumiko turned into an aloof person, kei did mention that yumiko doesn't like people right? think, what will happen to yumi if sachiko get married 1 day?

btw, the aota sensei looks familiar isn't he(the one giving back umbrella to yumichan), i saw him and OMG he looks like the colonel of KFC!!!

I agree. There is definitely that. But I think that these "old" characters don't have to be there in the story - which is really just a tale about Yumi and the people around Yumi.

There must be a reason to have the sisterhood echoed again and again through time as if it's something eternal that has existed as long as there has been the word "shoujo" and the world "Lillian." (It's kind of interesting that Kasuga-sensei is a "budding writer" IIRC and Yumiko is never mentioned having ever married - both retain some part of their "shoujo" qualities.)

I think the role of these "returning" characters is to expand the "subject" of the story from the girls in an idealized world for girls (i.e. Lillian), to (perhaps) all women in an idealized world (i.e. beyond Lillian), and thus in turn, to expand the theme of sisterhood to something universal.

(I think it's interesting that, while the story could be titled "The Girls of Lillian", instead it is called "Virgin Mary is Watching." The omniscience implied kind of enlarges the scope of the story by quite a bit.)

Wow.. I'm up to the middle of ep 12, and at this point of the anime I hate Touko SO MUCH! Who does she think she is, with the whole "I misjudged you" and "You're not suitable for Sachiko" crap? As if her opinion even has any value at all. If I were Yumi I would've taken that rosary and chucked it at her head, telling her if she (Yumi) was so unsuitable for Sachiko then why don't she (Touko) take her place instead, since it seems to be what she's trying to do anyway.

Jeez that Touko.. UGH!

You've yet to realize the moe~ness of Touko's "tsundere" towards Yumi in later novels.

*tsundere = Japanese anime/manga/ero-game lingo about a character who talks harshly but blushes at the same time towards a certain character (notable examples: Kuga Natsuki from "Mai-HiME," Cagali from "Gundam SEED" etc...)

Makes sense, since I only watch the anime & don't read the novel spoilers. Not sure which thread it was in, but someone wanted to know about anime-only fans' opinion of Touko; guess that post was my bit of input.
