Anyone here reading this manga? I'm loving it currently at chapter 4. It's really funny and really cool. Mad action scenes w/ their sarcastic('and funny') dialogs it's an instant win for me.

Soul Eater (ソウルイーター, Soul Eater?) is a manga written by Atsushi Ookubo and serialized in the magazine Monthly Shonen Gangan. It was first released as 3 separate one-shots in 2003 and became a regular series in 2004. Set in the Shinigami technical school for weapon technicians, the series revolves around 3 groups of each a weapon technician and a human weapon. Trying to make the latter a "Death Scythe" and thus fit for use by the Shinigami, they must collect the souls of 99 evil humans and 1 witch. The series will be made into an anime in Spring, 2008, animated by Bones (studio).

Maka was a beast in ch.19.
I hope that fight gets animation as good as Ed & Greed's fight from FMA.
after I read raw until vol.8, the fights will be awesome if it becomes animated...

Soul Eater is getting its anime soon. Watch out for it. Oh, and it's animated by BONES, the fellows behind FMA.
Oh, and fans of the art found in the early parts of GetBackers take note, SE's mangaka is a former assistant on GB.

This manga is not bad but there is something i don't get. What is Medusa purpose in resurrecting the Kishin?

For the sake of her research and to discover the ultimate evolution between human and a soul. I think she mentioned this in the chapter when she was dancing with Stein.
Awesome manga, and yes, it's worth for your collection.
Trust me, when the anime airs around April (moreover its BONES thats doing it), the manga would be swarmed with leechers just like it did with FMA.

Aside from Shinigami-sama's place, the series seems to be remarkably centered around the real world. You have the characters referencing where they come from, visits to real places, etc.

Yeah, that's what I figure too, only Death City would be in a place unreachable by normal humans, not the U.S.

I have a small question.
In chapter 22 when Ashura flies off after the small fight with Shinigami-sama how on earth would it not be noticed elsewhere in the world? If death city is in Nevada.o_o It'd be like some huge monster popping out right in the neigborhood park.

Seems like Death City's location in Nevada is confirmed. The assemble of the Death Scythes, lol at the South-America and Africa Death Scythes reasoning not being able to come. Something's bugging me though, Justin (the priest), was he actually praying and speaking to God? or he's actually referring Shinigami as 'God'? Seems weird to me. Nevertheless, interesting chapter.
Heh, that guy cracks me up. I was a little confused about that too, and I think it can go either way.
They kept saying "GUGUGU," thus we are unable to communicate

Neither, but the annoying glass women was class president and still acts like it :heh:
And the eye patch girl had crush on stein by when and she currently wants to retire and get married but they guys she goes out with keep dumping her :rolleyes:

We still haven't met or seen Maka's mother, even in the current chapters. And she's a weapon user, not a weapon.

Yes Justin is reffering to him as a god. And Shinigami is indeed a god as well as his son. This also end up as the explanation of Kid's weird hair color
All the new Death Scythes seemed interesting, lmao @ Mayu the crusher and Justin was worth a chuckle or two

The god's body repels any harmful substances. While Kid tried to dye his hair, but the color keep on felling off due to how his body work. And it somehow end up as those strips on his hair.

It reveals that the hostesses at the club that Death Scythe frequents are actually witch spies, and DS and Sid confront them.
So the reason he is always there is likely to spy on THEM :eek:

It never reveal in manga about is Chrona boy or girl. And under Chrona's entry in Japanese Wikipedia, it states:"設定上として性別は不明(gender is unknown)."

It is VERY possible if those two have met in a different circumstances.
But then, is it possible for Stein to love anyone? He there is no love in him and he knows that too.
Speaking of Stein, is it just me or does the younger version of him and Soul look a LOT a like?
I don't think there's anything behind it, just found that funny.
That reminds, we actually know nothing of Soul's past. For most of the main cast, we more or less know about their past in some degrees. But Soul has his personal history left completely blank blank. The only thing we know so far is that he distaste his family name.

The same goes for Maka. Never seen her mom.
Soul and Maka's backgrounds right now are still a mystery xD Even how they met hasn't been revealed in the manga I think. Oh I'm so cruious to know xD
Maka seems to be raised in the Death City according to little bits of flash back, or moved their at very early age along with Death Scythe. I wonder more about their parents than herself. What exactly happened in their divorce? And I am half expecting Maka's mom to be a joker type character who'll completely screw the power balance once she appears.... and the whip the hell out of her husband....
Maka's mom is one of biggest mysteries in SE just by her existence, I'd say. She has Maka's custody, and obviously Maka likes and respects her. Now, we see Spirit (Maka's papa) from time to time, but she has mysteriously never been seen. She may give Spirit a hard time, perhaps, but I doubt she is a "joker type character," since even Spirit admits she is not as good as Stein in term of being a weapon meister.

Very likely she has soem similarities with Maka in terms of attitude (since I think the reason of the divorce is Death Scythe's cheating ^^;) and she may act for humor at times since . . . we're talking about Soul Eater after all xD Which character doesn't have even a little crack? haha xD
I don't know, I feel that her part of the crack is being too normal in itself and is out there to cleanse all the abnormalities that she can find, especially her husband.

I read all the chapter out so far.
We really need to get more info about our main characters' past. Maka said Soul can dance well. And, we know he can play the piano as well (I can't wait for them to animate that part). So what is he?
Was he born a weapon? Or did something made him a weapon?
And in any case, we don't even know that much details about how Maka and Soul met. I mean there are already 10 books but still we know so little about them.
I recall her saying "I *made* you" at one point in the first volume (but I need to look it up). Don't know what that actually means though...
If she said that, it certainly wasn't meant literally. Tsubaki existed as a weapon before she met Black Star.
I'm assuming it's a trait passed on through families.
It probably was a translation glitch or metaphor... I've not seen the original japanese dialog.

Well, we do know quite bit about Maka, Soul on the hand is much more mysterious, and generally we get pieces of his past, like him being from a rich family (called Evans) that he detests. How Maka and Soul met will probably explained at some point. Most mangas tend take a longer time to fill out pasts of their protags.:)

Stein becoming villain is certainly sweet, and I have been anticipating that. But I found the plot is trying to avoid that, as Mary is really trying to keep Stein from breaking down. The relationship between those two is also a bit bitter sweet. Stein knows no love being the reason why Mary wants to stay with him.
I recall her saying "I *made* you" at one point in the first volume (but I need to look it up). Don't know what that actually means though...
Making weapon is a taboo. The very reason that got BOTH Shinigami sama and the witches trying to kill Archne. The act is simply immoral on a lot of levels. It is often assumed all weapons now days passed down through heritage. Trying to make new weapon only means trouble, as you would have the world trying to kill you.

(We can clearly see he is much more refined than Blackstar. Soul has always been more or less a gentleman -- protecting Maka, never peak at girls on purpose, dress nicely to parties, eat in small bites...)
As for how they met... if I remember correctly, all we know so far from the manga (and I guess this is implied in the anime in ep 1), is that Soul played a song for Maka when they met.

I checked for you. It's in chapter 30.
Liz thanked Soul for bringing a bunch of records to a party hosted at Kid's mansion. Soul explained he bought funk music because Liz told him to bring something with good rhythm, but he thought the music really didn't fit the party (it's a high class, dinner party). Maka suggested Soul should go play a fitting song on the piano himself.
Soul escaped by going to washroom.
After that, Maka explained to Liz that she heard Soul play the piano once, it's a very sad and weird song called "I am this kind of Person," when they first became partners.
I can't wait to hear that song as well. It seems that though Soul refuse to admit it, he is a great piano player.
Turns out Ookubo's first series, B-Ichi, has been licensed as well. I've never been able to find much on it (I'm wary of making a blind buy), but it appears to be along the same vein as Soul Eater.
Can't wait :)

Chapter 24 is up,
Seems like they're going hunting Golems in the Czech Republic. Stein is getting closer to the dark side, but good thing Marie is around him. Chrona finally teamed up and Ragnarok becomes tame after its souls confiscated by Shinigami...

I can't see how she would be. I mean creator of the Demon Weapons? One of the 3 Gorgon Sisters? (which means she might be related to Medusa), enemy of Witches and Shibusen? She has possible connection to Ashura, since she woke when he did. Let's not forget she also has a wavelength of insanity.
I am only up to chapter 25, so I was not sure.

I'm simply annoyed at her by the fact she keeps manipulating all those people to do her dirty work (see Mifune, Kim) and simply doesn't do much herself. So far I haven't really seen her do much besides meditating. But I guess that's what a typical villain would do.
Oh yea she doesn't seem to notice that her BREW is a fraud.... yet.

And from this I'm pretty sure that the 'God' he's referring to is well.....both the Christian God and Shinigami...at times.
I hope the other Death Sycthes (aside from Spirit) are as badass as Justin.

Sorry spaz, but he's right, there are some mistakes. Another one I caught was where Patty was supposed to say Maka was like a baby.
I wouldn't worry, it is a bit difficult to take spaz seriously if he doesn't even post with passable grammar while he's making unsupported assertions.:) At least kari-no-sugata was trying to provide examples.
If there's going to be discussion on it though, I recommend people post the original japanese along with their interpretation. Otherwise, it is pointless.

IIRC, in Ch 24 Sid kinda realize that freaks out kids due being dead and all with coversation with Maka. Another point is that Stein could probably teach them far more than he could. So he can use his talents elsewhere.

Who knows, but considering how strong he is along with his unique experience he should be able teach them something, besides it's probably better he sides with Shibusen than with Archaine's organzation since he wouldn't be used against them and Angela would probably be safer there for the time being.

While Shinigami sama himself never commented on the innate affinity of Eibon's creations. Hell, Shinigami sama has collected all those Eibon's creation rather than destroy it them out right should haven explained there is more to Eibon than meet the eyes.
Think about professor stein hes not exactly lawful or good yet he is part of shibusen and fairly high ranking despite experimenting on his own demon weapon + anything he can get his hands on. Basically you cant just see Shinigami + shibusen as being "good" hes just one power who wants to preserve the current status quo. To that end he can/will employ whatever he sees necessary to maintain status quo even if it is "evil". Also to be honest we dont know that the guy is really evil at this point its relatively about the same as the scientists who invented the H-bomb. Were they evil? Most people would say no because the theory + practice of what they did can be put to many uses one of which was ending hundreds of thousands of innocent lives (although it probably saved a ton in doing so). Moral of the story Eibon's (sp?) inventions are most likely similar to nuclear fusion where they can either A. kill a buncha people B. be extremely beneficial and useful. It all just depends on who uses it and to what purpose.
Edit: Moral of the story most likely Shinigami and Eibon just had a falling out and took off in their own directions. It could even be that shinigami realized that the inventions being created were becoming more and more dangerous and therefore he should not be a part of their creation anymore and instead should secure them.
Edit2: Oh btw is anyone else hoping Chrona just says "Fudge off" to medusa and rats her out to Shinigami/Maka/death scythe/anyone?

Looks like they went back into time since the trees and such are around them and that area was rebuilt. Also shimigami never has that mask on only in flash backs plus he can't leave Death City.

We get Sid vs. Mifune, rematch between Justin Law and Giriko(?), and the three other student techs. And Justin's entrance was pretty funny. He's going down the mountain on the snowmobile with bass and is like "Sorry I was talking in a loud voice and set this Avalanche off, oh look it's an enemy squad." and then afterwards, he just like "Damn, I lost my custom snowmobile equipped with speakers."

Just finished chapter 28 (yeah way behind) and god that was awesome.. Mifune vs Blackstar round 2.. all I can say is that Yutaka Nakamura (Maka/Soul Vs Jack The Ripper and a lot fo amazing stuff from Sunrise/Bones) better be animating that fight in the anime!

Did anyone else lol at Soul and I think Kidd's "job"? They had to amuse Angela which meant getting hit in the balls by a stick. And then after Soul gets taken down by the mighty stick, Kidd going like "Nooooo, Soul, don't worry I will join you soon" and then spreading himself open in that pose, I was like, LOL.
47 was definitely full of lulz.
This was also the first time I've ever considered Maka/Kid to be viable...
But of course it's Maka/Soul forever!!! >_<

Unfortunately, because I read them all too fast, I probably missed out alot of stuff :heh: Gotta go through them again... But off the top of my head, there are some things I want to comment...
1. Seiken - I CANNOT freaking wait for that chapter to be animated :D I would have never imagine that thing in the OP to be Excaliber :heh: Nor could I imagine what Excaliber to that... :eyespin: :eyespin: :eyespin:
2. My second favorite character - Stein.
A) Stein/Medusa - Never saw that one coming :twitch:
B) Stein/Marie - Was worried for a moment there :heh: As evil as it sounds, maybe it's better that BJ brought the farm...

3. So... 30 chapters in, and Soul is still fighting/resisting the black blood demon? I'm not quite clear what the black blood does for Soul, a 'simple' power up (Plus catch) ?And more importantly, in that Brew struggle, why did the demon so Insistence on wanting him to play the Piano?
4. Oh my~ Wonder why Shinigami wants those Demon Tools...
5. Black Star really needed that time out, it's good that Kidd knocked him out, he's going overboard with everything already, picking a fight with anyone and everyone... (On a lighter note, lol @ Milfune making Tsubaki blush)

Well, they seem to be constantly recruiting, and the only one they would recognize is Medusa.
A bunch of them take off their masks in 48 and don't bat an eye.
Awsome chapter. Surprised at fidning out that Black*Star knows how to use Dr.Stein's Konie now. And the Shadow*Star is just bloody awsome. Can't wait for ch.50, Black*Star vs, Mifune round 3 has to be the best figth yet.

I do really think she is saying the truth there. Since unlike most other, she has nothing to hide in front of Stein, as they are the same type of person. Plus, she is trying to convince Stein in that scene, why does she want to use a lie that would piss him off instead? Such a lie would be pointless, she has nothing to gain from lying to Stein about how badly she maltreats Chrona. She is merely expressing her own insanity to prove the fact that she and Stein are indeed alike, something Stein was trying to deny. Compare that scene where she is talking to Stein and her conversation with Maka, her attitude is completly different. Its is easy to tell when is Medusa in her natural evil insane state and when is she acting and lying. If anything, I consider that scene where she conversed with Stein the scene that depicts Medusa most well, she really let out the darkest part of her.

It's not good to look like a softy in front of your enemy, considering the situation of their death match. Especially for a big bad witch like Medusa.
What's more, if she were to revealed that she have a soft spot for Chrona, the enemy would definitely take advantage of that. If they believe that she cares nothing for Chrona, then they wouldn't even bother with Chrona.

I pretty much jumped from chapter 5 to 18 today (which is a lot for me seen as I don't read manga) after thinking to myself that I should really stop after the current chapter so I can get some revision done...it isn't happening :heh:
The current fights are fricking interesting...I can't wait to see how it will turn out.

Well if it makes you feel any better, sometimes the first (important) enemy does sometimes eventually becomes an ally.
To make you feel slightly better, there is still one last Witch sister, as well as the Queen Witch herself. And personally, Eibon is just begging for a come back.

That's actually an interesting detail, both about the setting and the time frame of the manga.
If the anniversary is on April 1st, does that mean that they follow a Japanese system, despite being in Nevada and having mostly non-Japanese characters?
In chapter 1, Maka says it's the first day of school (back to school?). Would that put the start of the story in August/September or in January? (it doesn't feel likely that a full year passed to get to the party)

The title of the arc is "Zenyasai no Shitou" -- "The Eve's Struggle to the Death" (where "eve" is some kind of celebratory eve). The problem is if you plug the Japanese into a dictionary, it spits out "Christmas Eve" as an example for "Zenyasai." That doesn't mean that's what it translates to though. In this case, it's the eve of the school's foundation.

This is why I like Soul Eater. Yesterday's enemy is today's ally, and tomorrow's enemy. Because as long they share the same enemy this concept will still be applicable. I also like how the 'bargaining' situation was played between Shinigami and Medusa. Watching them reminded me of the movies Syriana, Munich or the Good Shepperd involving Mossad, CIA, the US government and others. Mutual bargaining againts foes as long as it is profitable. Kinda like business.

It's like the saying, "The enemy of my enemy is my friend". It's quite common for two enemies to ally with each other to defeat an even bigger enemy. Just look at U.S. and U.S.S.R. during World War 2.
But don't you think this is also a reason she lied?
The way I would argue is, there is no need to. Medusa don't have to lie about being an insane psychotic evil bitch, because she IS one. Well, unless you actually think she is secretly pious and nice. And if she is trying to lie about being the same type of person as Stein, she would show some soft spot too (as Stein has plenty of soft spot), making herself more easy to relate to by Stein. And this also leads to my next point.

Showing she cares about Chrona might actually shaken Stein somewhat. It is clear that Stein, and Spirit too wants to believe she isn't that evil of a child abuser. Showing she has a soft spot can slow them down by playing into their expectation, and even if not Stein, it'll definitely work on Spirit. Showing she has a soft spot can make her more appear less threatening to her enemy and should be able to impress Stein a bit more. But she didn't, as she has no such soft spot at all, not even a fake one.
Plus, if Medusa really has a soft spot for Chrona, I see her even use that to her advantage and taunts with lines like "I lover Chrona, and the Chrona loves me too, are you really that heartless to separate us? Or would you admit to be as coldblooded as I am?"
Such words is most definitively going to dealt some psychological blow to both Stein and Spirit.
Oh and also, I never think Medusa have any sort of "right mind". Our insanity is her definition of normalcy.

What about the part where Medusa was talking about the damage that Arachnophobia did to nature, making Soul question whether she was truely that cold-blooded? Because while she might have lied about that too, I really don't feel like she did in that particular context, since she really had no reason to lie, and I doubt she would be thinking every second about what words to say in order to gain their trust.
