ya but the logitech and microsoft blue tooth have recharger.... so does the logitech mx700 one..... i got a shitty ball mouse...... :(
i bought this optical "4-d" mouse for like less than 10 bucks. however, the side buttons stick out and you can sometimes hit them by accident. it gets some getting used too. i suggest when you do get an opticall mouse, make sure the side buttons aren't sticking out too much, cuz it was a real pain in the ass to get used not accidently touching the side buttons

Ive always preferred the Logitech 2x optical mouse. I like the shape the most and it and it rox for 3d gaming. The first generation optical mice would flip out whenever you would move fast but nowadays they are nice and smooth. I will never go back to a wheel balled mouse ;)

well i use a no name brand lol ... it came with my puter aggges ago and ive used it since ^_^ it has the scroll thingy still tho...i dunno what i would do without that
My MS IntelliMouse Explorer 3.0 is great. Get one of those or a Logitech mx500. Although I think that the MS mouses fit better in your hand.

Well, if you don't play games often or don't draw on your computer very often then I highly recommend Logitech's wireless trackBALL. It's the best. You can relax anywhere in the room and keep your arms stationary while moving the mouse cursor. No need for mouse pads or flat surfaces. Plus, this thing eats up very little batteries. I bought mine in July and I still haven't replaced the batteries yet. I've also used it daily without flaw. Having this thing around is like having a remote control to watch anime or browse the web. You just sit and click.
P.S. I have a trackball that you control with your fingertips as opposed to your thumb.
I've got both a wireless and a non wireless MS Intellimouse Explorer 3, and I love them. They fit perfectly in your hand (I can't say the same of Logitech mouses, I can't get used to those).
I do however recommend you not to get a mouse with the new microsoft 2D scrollwheel (the ones that can sroll not only up and down, but also to the left and right), they work fine for scrolling left and right, but up and down scrolling just plainly sucks.
Other than that, the Intellimouse Explorer has 2 internet buttons at the left side of the mouse (quite large buttons, so you won't miss them, but you won't hist them by accident either), once you get used to them, they are extremely handy.
The wireless mouse is a bit heavier because of the batteries, but they last well over a month in my case.
You might want to check Tom's Hardware Guide, they recently did a test (http://www6.tomshardware.com/consumer/20031020/index.html) on a whole bunch of optical mouses ^^

I use one of IBM's optical mice, but instead of a scroll wheel it has a microjoystick/trackpoint in the same place. I've always hated scroll wheels since you have to keep moving your finger over and over like you're petting the wheel. With a microjoystick, however, your finger just stays still and you apply a little pressure or a lot to get the effect you want. It's blows a wheel mouse away in IMHO. Might want to take a look anyway. ^^

*looks around his computer area to see what kind of mouse he has*
Nope, no mice here. I have a Logitech Trackball and a Wacom Tablet, but no mice. This is a mice free zone (and has been for atleast 4 years). And about using trackballs for videogames .... well, I have a tendancy to come out on top of any UT or Halo game I get myself into (which is a lot). Trackballs are just another tool for the job, and once you get used to them you won't want to go back.
With the proper amount of care, I've found ball mice preferable to optical mice. I've found all too often that without the right kind of surface, optical mice skitter around which annoys me to no end. I think it's a little silly how these "pro" gamers spend more than £5 on a "professional" mouse mat, when my classic three-button Logitech scrollwhell mouse will work on any book, magazine, table, pad or random surface I put it down on. Works great for gaming and general use.

The only advantage I have ever seen that optical mice have over analog mice is the lack of drunk optical mice. You can only clean a mouse ball so many times before it becomes perminately drunk. Opticals only become drunk on certain surfaces, but change the surface and it should work fine. Btw, anyone figured out yet what happens when your bulb goes out on your opitcal, certainly your warrenty won't last that long.
been using optical for the last 2 years, liking it, even with the cord.. running it over some left over automotive rug..
if the bulb goes out eh?...it's LED, so it will last long (how bout 12yrs and still not blown?)..as long as you got good powersupply that don't tend to fluctuate its' output much, it'll do fine. So if the bulb ever actually got blown..a cheap replacement will be plentysome in the market.
I use a Logitech MX500, and I love it! It's the second optical mouse I have, the first one (an older Logitech optical) had it's left button... damaged, after rapid and nearly constant hammering for a few hours.
It fits my hand perfectly, though it will most likely feel a little uncomfortable or alien to begin with after using a mouse with a "flat" surface, since you have to hold the mouse slightly differently.
The mouse wheel doesn't have that horrible clicking sound anymore, like my last Logitech had. It has two buttons I have become addicted to, located right above the thumb, though you won't touch them accidentally unless your thumbs are gigantic. They function as the internet browsers forward and backward button, and while it takes time getting used to, you will surely miss them if you use an older mouse for surfing later.
It has one small button above and below the mouse wheel too, these functions as scroll up and scroll down. Unlike the mouse wheel, which on some configurations only scroll the active window (where you last clicked), the buttons scroll the window your pointer is located over.
It has one button on the mouse's "back", which functions as a kind of multitask button. When you click it, a list of all the programs, browser windows etc. running is displayed, for your selection. This button is clicked by pressing the back of your middle finger down (sorry is this sounds strange, hard to explain). It's almost like alt-tab, except the list is more visible.
Downside? It won't fit left-handed people. Unless they make specific left-handed MX500 mice. Not a problem for me, though. I use a wired mouse, since I don't want to worry about batteries and the cord doesn't bother me.
i use the MX700. it's exactly the same as the MX500 i believe except that it's wireless and the MX500 is not. go for the MX500 if you're a hardcore gamer, they always go for the MX500 cause wireless mice are a bit heavier due to the 2 AA batteries inside.
wait, there's an MX900???

I have disagree IME. I can use my optical all sorts of places my ball mouse doesn't have a chance. On beds and pant legs and whatever a ball mouse just doesn't get the traction and ball positioning it needs - ball mice need hard and flat, I suspect - where my optical works on those fine. My optical generally needs *a lot* less space than my wheel mouse as well, although maybe you could reach parity by pumping up the speed on the ball mouse.
There is one single, shiny counter I can't use my optical on and there I just threw a notebook under it. I also find optical much smoother and more accurate (and my previous ball mouse was a Logitech, so it was decent quality), maybe optical are higher resolution? I know from dissecting dead ball mice many just have a toothed wheel for tracking movement that would limit their res pretty badly. My mousing speed is something like twice as fast using optical (and I do play with settings on my own, not just take what I've given).
Just different POV, lalala... ^^

mouses are female, so no ballz, except for my hammer mouse (pv j/k) :o
i had that pb with single optical sensor ... but not that much anymore since i've improved my gaming :D
it really depends the surface you're one (func surface in my case :D )
Just don't buy a cordless mouse..
They have too many disadvantages like the batteries
which are heavy and tend to give up right before you
start a game :p
I prefer optical over ball mice because I hate cleaning the mouse ball. I do not use my optical mouse just anywhere so the surface of my desk/table works just fine. :) I used a Microsoft optical mouse until my friends bought me a Logitech mx700 for my birthday. I don't like the fact that I have to recharge it every night. If I don't, the battery goes empty in a few days. I use the computer way too much... :heh:

mice are 3V1L!!!!! K3YB04RD 4 3V3rrrrr
My Logitech Optical mouse has a nice ergonomic design so my hand doesn't cramp when I'm using the computer for half an hour.
Microsoft mice are bleh :p they have too many buttons which I click accidentally.

I'm using the standard Logitech mouse (2 buttons, a scroll, a wire :p)
I use the MX700 and I love it...
Its wireless and optical... and it comes with a recharger... so I just let it recharge every night after I shut down the computer.
Never had a problem with it and I do tons of gaming...
Counter-Strike, Warcraft III, Halo... it works great for me.
Though... keep a backup mouse (reg wired cheap one will do)... for those times you stay up soooo late gaming... eyes beet red and a massive migraine... that you might forget to put your mouse on the charger... then wake up in the morning err I mean late afternoon... go try to turn on the computer and use the mouse and then you see your mouse flashing red and then it dies on you... and at that point you're cussing at yourself for not charging it... but then when that happens to me... I always got my PS2 hehehehe...
But yeah... I recommend getting the whole package... with the wireless keyboard as well... it looks great and is very convenient. For me less wires the better.... It works great too ;)
no idea.... came with the comp. but it's black and optical.... and unless it's made by dell it doesn't have the brand on it.

wow i didn't know this thread will become this popular... i think i might get the logitech mx700 with keyboard..... but it kinda looks too expensive in canada..... around $120... and 15% tax........ :o taxed to death.... i think you can take the heavy metal thing off the mx700 ..... so can the mx500...... maybe i should buy it onine... nvm shipping and handing ...... :(
By now mostly everybody has a optical mouse, and while ive never thought i would need another one, Logitech has proven me wrong. I dont know if it was announced today or what but they've come out wiht the first Laser mouse. Doesnt that word just excite ya for some reason.
Just a little bit from main site at Logitech:
If you thought smooth tracking optical sensors were an advancement over mechanical ball-based mice, let us introduce you to the mouse that takes precision and performance to a whole new level: the Logitech® MX™1000 Laser Cordless Mouse, the world's first laser mouse.
Now optical is obsolete. And your computing experience will never be the same.
Featuring the Logitech MX™ Laser Engine, the MX1000 delivers a new pinnacle of performance no optical mouse can match. With an incredible 20x more sensitivity to surface detail—or tracking power—than optical, laser can track reliably even on tricky polished or wood-grain surfaces. And the MX1000 offers even more advanced features that will make you more productive and more comfortable:
Plus its pretty:

Now if they just made a wireless keyboard, with some kind of recharging base like there mouses are, my life would be just even more lazy.

Yeah, these mouses/mice (<< ???? ) are so nifty.. I bought one for my boyfriend which is a couple of models down from that one, but came with a bluetooth keyboard, and it is awse... It's great not having to worry about bloody cords and stuff and I can type up to 10 metres away! :)
meh if it works on glass then ill get one otherwise its the same as optical to me
(damn having a glass computer desk.. it looked sexy and nice...but not all that great seeing i do not like my powerpuff girls mousemat anymore. lol)

i have a logitch mx700 mouse with recharing base... the new bluetooth came out now this laser one... my mx700 is really nice... really fast... but this laser one is 20x faster... wow... i must get this mouse... >.<

It doesn't just work on glass, it works on mirrors as well. This mouse was slashdotted (http://slashdot.org/) a while ago.
I have only been using logitech mice for the past 5 or 6 years. After trying the Microsoft ones, I really hated them. This was a few years ago. Now, I gave them a chance before buying a new mouse. I still hated Microsoft for some reason.
Anyways, I would recommend the MX300 series if you don't care about wires. If you don't want to be tethered down, the the MX700 or higher series.
All I got to say about them are they are damn accurate.
If you want the ultimate accuracy, get the MX1000 series. It uses lasers instead of an optical sensor (camera) and is the same price of the high end MX series, but it is supposed to be alot more accurate.
Unfortuantely, I'm not ready for an upgrade yet, but I will probably get a MX1000 or higher model when I do feel like I need one. :)
Brand does not matter much; take the one that looks the best, is optical, and does what you need. That said, I'm using MS Explorer 3.0 mouse. If I were going to buy a new one soon, I would rather take MS Black Leather mouse -same functionality and looks pretty damn good.
Just don't take some wireless mouse if you want to play games; heard they have some lag-issues... :hmm:
