I swear to god i watch this years ago. Like back in the early 90's. Are we sure this isn't licenced?

I assume that you are referring to the Mermaid's Forest TV series that is currently airing and being subbed by Live-eviL. It isn't licensed, but you probably did watch something very similar. Back in 1991 there was an OVA called Mermaid's Forest which was based on one of Rumiko Takahashi's short manga stories. The new TV series is based upon the rest of her mermaid stories.

Oh. I was wondering that too.

^_^ Though not too much since I thought the OVA's were too depressing. Are the TV eps better?

I definitly like this series. It has this wonderful dark feeling about it and the storys pretty good too. Although the monsters look a little goofy. Too bad the fan base isn't very big so we can get faster releases though.

Anyways who else is following this one?

Heck yes! This show is so twisted and evil that I can't get it out of my head. Just when I think I've seen it all, this show provides a new variety of evil inflicted in the name of immortality. The eponymously titled chapter, episodes 4 and 5 particularly impressed me. I was totally blown away by the ending.

Yeah, the graphic quality for this series is not that good but the story itself is awesome. But one thing I don't like about the story is the main character guy keeps dying again and again in every episodes. Okay...we know that he is immortal but he should have value his life a bit more instead of getting reckless and die.

Go-lytely
2003-12-09, 12:33
Well, the main guy just always happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Anyway, if you were immortal I bet you would be a little more reckless too. Heck I would be.

if you guys like the tv version, you really should check out the original Mermaid Forest ova, as well as Mermaid's Scar. (the only version of mermaid's scar that is remotely available to download is dubbed, however).

Mermaid Forest TV is a retelling of the ova, and also has a loooot more back story. Mermaid's Scar is the sequel to Mermaid Forest, with the same characters.

i loved both, so i really love the tv series as well. both the original ova and scar are also really dark.

The story is soo great and it keeps surprising me! The OP and ED are awesome too :D

How come the BT file still isn't show on animesuki? It's already on half a day!

BTW: Mermaid's forest is the second season of Rumic Theatre, who has seen it? Was it this good too? Was the story about what happened before Mermaid's forest?

Go-lytely

The ED of Mermaid's forest is one of those songs that totally fits the mood of the series.

Rumic Theater is completely unrelated to Mermaid's forest. It is self-contained stories about average Japanese people living in sometimes extraordinary circumstances. Episodes range from an average salryman who has to take care of his bosses dog and mistress to a housewife who must keep a secret from the other tenants about owning a penguin or risk being kicked out. Sometimes funny but always having that Rumiko Takahashi charm to it.

yea I started watching this show yesterday, thx to koshiba's recomendation, and now that vacations started I'm caught up to eps 7. I like the series and the way its going. One thing kind of bothers me though....why does

Yuta always die by a spear and why does Yuta always use a spear as his like main weapon. I know he was a good fishermen, but come on does it always have to be a spear that kills him? Well except for the dog that killed him and the cliff falling off part. Maybe its just me, but does anyone see kind of what I am talking about? Hmm well I was just curious no need to go on and argue my thoughts.

PS I know he uses the spear because they always kill him with it, but well whatevers

I like it, and it follows what I've read of the manga pretty closely. Now with episode 7, it's past what I've read, so I'm really looking foward to the next episode. The only problem I have is the way the story is presented with the flashbacks. I'd perfer it if it was more chronological, but other than that I can't complain.

Well yuta doesnt die from a spear all the time.

Off the top of my head he's been killed by spear, knife, drowning, dog, and falling.

The eps where he is killed by a spear are always fishing villages so it would make sense why they would have fishing spears as weapons.

First and foremost, I would like to send my thanks to Live-eviL for subbing this series. The old Mermaid Forest & Mermaid Scar OVA/Movies? were the first anime I ever watched and having the TV series now is excellent. So, thank you from the bottom of my heart!! You guys do great work! (oh, and I am loving Rose of Versailles as well).

Second, I have to ask even though I am dreading that I know the answer. Is eleven episodes all there really are to the TV series? Ten and eleven are a part one and two. That means there will be no Mermaid Scar or Mermaid Gaze in the series. Scar is my favorite and I am so sad to realize it won't be there :upset:

Does anyone know if there is there going to be a third season of Rumic Theater? Or is unknown right now? Or is it just a dream? *sigh* Well, here's hoping!

Once again, Live-eviL is awesome!! ^^

At this time there is no plan for a 3rd season, and I doubt there will be. Also, to my knowledge, the only unaired portion of the Mermaid's Saga is the Mermaid's Scar story. I guess they figured they did such a nice job with the OAV that they didn't need to reanimate it :)

I hope they put the Mermaid's Scar OAV on DVD with the Mermaid's Forest DVD box set! That would be wonderful! Anyway, I do believe Mermaid's Gaze (I'm not 100% which part of the Japanese manga that corresponds to since they renamed it for the english release) was or will be animated. And yes, it ends at episode 11.

Will episodes 10 and 11 be reliesed for Mermaid Forest? I have searched the forums and live-evil pages for information about the rest of the Mermaid Forest series without success. It isn't even mentioned on the web page. Maybe it got dropped for some reason. Please inform. Thank you live-evil for bringing me one of my favorites such as Condor Hero among others. I have searched the forums and live-evil pages for information about the rest of the Mermaid Forest series without success.

Errrrmm, sorry to say but you didn't do exactly a good job on searching did you :)

The L-E web site (http://www.live-evil.org/) has it's own forum and in that forum there is even a thread called Mermaid Forest Project Dropped??? (http://forum.live-evil.org/YaBB.cgi?board=current;action=display;num=10762661 05). While it doesn't help you with your question, it does seem a more logical place to annoy^H^H^H^H^H ask L-E about it. They also have a link to their IRC channel from the site.

Also, AnimeSuki (http://www.animesuki.com/) lists their channel and site under the Group (http://www.animesuki.com/group.php) link at the top of the page. Plus in this very forum we have a sticky called Do NOT ask when the next episode will be released! (http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?t=324). I won't mention the fact that this particular forum is for discussion of fansubs, not somewhere to whinge and whine about the lack of them. Sorry if this sounds harsh but we really are getting too many similar threads around here, I don't know how the fansubs groups put up with it. They do all the hard work just for the fans and what do they get out of it, constant complaints...

So please just have patience, they will release it when it's ready. Considering they are the only group fansubbing this series, you should be showering praise on L-E instead of complaining that they aren't going fast enough for your satisfaction.

Closing thread.

Try cdJapan (http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/).

They have Like an Angel (http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=IOCD-11048) listed.

And if you meant where can you download it from, then here's a hint (from the forum rules (http://forums.animesuki.com/announcement.php?f=10))

Do not ask for licensed anime or manga
As described in Fansubbing and Licensing (http://www.animesuki.com/doc.php/licensed/) fansubs are technically illegal as they breach copyright. However as AnimeSuki.com does not wish to be associated with piracy, discussions about unlawfully getting licensed anime or manga or even DVD rips are not allowed. This means it is not allowed to post links to sites with such licensed material or ways to obtain it illegally, or ask for links or instructions to be emailed or PM'ed to you. Threads which break this rule will be either closed or simply deleted.
Do not ask for other illegal materials either
Obviously discussions about getting any other illegal materials, such as Ripped Music CDs (such as Anime OSTs), ROMs, ISOs, Warez etc. are not allowed either. Threads which break this rule will be either closed or simply deleted.

Nope, not at all :)

Amazingly I have never seen the OVAs of Mermaid's Forest or Mermaid's Scar. (Though I loved Fire Tripper!) Can you tell me what their relation to the TV series is? Does the TV series retell those stories, or are they additional?

Please use spoiler tags! [spoiler]

PS. For those who don't know why I mentioned Fire Tripper, there was an old OVA series called Rumic World which included the three OVAs I mentioned along with Supergal and Laughing Target.

The Mermaid Forest OVA was re-told in the TV series. (the story with the girl with that monster hand, episode 4 and 5 or so) There are some small differences in the story though, also it was darker and gorier. (Which figures since it's an OVA) The OVA version was a bit better than the TV series IMO.

I'm not sure if the The Mermaid Scar OVA was retold in the TV series or not (haven't watched all of the TV series yet.)

quasi-spoiler about Mermaid Scar plot :
(which I ripped off from some review-site :) )

Young Masato is travelling on his own from Tokyo to be re-united with his mother, Misa. On his way, he meets Yuta and Mana who are travelling through Japan on their continued hunt for other people like themselves. Once reunited with his mother however, young Masato doesn't seem happy, and indeed Misa seems decidedly out of sorts with her son if not downright homicidal.

In town, rumours abound of Misa and of a fatal boating accident one month earlier. It seems that Misa and her husband had been involved in a terrible boating accident; Misa supposedly died in the accident but somehow came back to life the next day. Moreover, Misa recovered completely from the severe burns without any scarring in just one week! How could such a thing happen? Is it possible that Misa has partaken of mermaid's flesh? If so, then why is she trying to kill young Masato? What secrets are these two people hiding?
Does anyone know if Mermaid Scar was retold in the TV series? (I guess I'll know soon enough anyway when I watch the rest of the TV series...)

Even if it was re-told, I'd recommend watching the OVAs as well.

EDIT: Just checked the Mermaid Forest OVA again, I remembered correctly: it was better than the TV version. The art is better in the OVA even though it's older and there's a lot more gore, overall it's more atmospheric.

Mermaid's Scar story was not told in the TV. The general concensus was that the OAV was so well done that there was no need to redo it.

Aha. In my opinion the Mermaid Forest OVA was even better than the Mermaid Scar OVA, so I have no idea why they chose to re-do that one.

Also, I find that reason somewhat ironic because the Mermaid Forest TV version is not as good as the OVA.

Well I think that the Mermaid's Scar OAV is much more popular in Japan, and had a much higher penetration than Mermaid's Forest did. A lot of people watching anime today never had the chance to see Forest OAV, so it made more sense to redo it. Scar was a bit more mainstream, popular, and recent.

-TofuYou say that then, but release Mermaid's Forest episodes 12 and 13 now. ;)

Episodes 12 and 13 are out and they are the retelling of Chapter 3 of the Mermaids Scar manga and the Mermaid's Scar OVA. Yay! I now am only left to hope the series gets licensed so it can join my VHS of the original OVA in my collection or just flat out cave and buy the R2s. >.>;

A thousand apologies for reviving a long-dead thread.

Does anyone know where to find the translation of the ED to the Mermaid Forest series? Namely, Mizu Tamari by Kayoko?

Had set my sights on this one for a good while now, but never got around to watching it. Now that i finally have i must say i was missing out.

The show offers a relatively unique experience, as i have yet to watch another show that would touch upon immortality to any noteworthy degree. As such the concept was fresh and i fully enjoyed the journey of Mana and Yuta. The darker aspect it took went along with the theme nicely, creating a befitting atmosphere.

That said, the horror element felt rather underwhelming. It had potential for more, but rarely did it strike me as genuinely creepy. No thanks for this goes to the art itself, as the designs of deformed ones come across as goofy instead of creepy ... which doesn't really help with the mood. I am not the one to complain about animation usually, but in this case better designs could have went a long way in improving the experience.

Whatever passed as action was very underwhelming as well. Still frames sprinkled with some minimalistic effects to give them a motion feel rarely make for good suspense, and it didn't here either. Fighting was not really the point of the series, so i can overlook that to a degree. I wasn't really impressed with their choice to often portray blood as fluorescent red liquid. It doesn't add anything to the scene, only takes away the gritty feeling it could otherwise have. The music was rather good though, the solemn tunes enhancing the mood nicely.

The overall animation quality is not the strong point of the series indeed, but the setting and the story makes up for that. In fact the consistency of the healing powers can be argued and the storytelling felt somewhat clumsy at times, but heck - the story still makes up for it :p

The fact they conveniently kept running in to some mermaid related issues all the time didn't really tickle my fancy, as i would have preferred to see an episode or two that deals with their everyday life or at least some issue not involving the supernatural, but then again seeing the two were literally searching for such i can understand why it turned this way. Yuta could have died less though ... it almost felt an episode was not complete unless he died once :heh: That, and he seemed to blurt out his secret rather easily all the time.

From all the miniarcs i think i enjoyed the last one most. It had some genuinely creepy moments and the atmosphere was intense. And i really wished Mana would have strangled the little brat and then introduced him to his own axe ... not sure if he deserved any better.

I was also largely satisfied with the ending. Usually i am not the biggest fan (to say the least) of endings that don't really conclude anything, but this time it felt rather fitting. Their's wasn't a story that begged conclusion that would end everything. A rather fitting "and so it goes on" given the theme. I also highly liked the scene in last episode where Yuta came back to life in Mana's lap and she started to cry from happiness. It wasn't anything she wouldn't expect, but she still couldn't help but feel relieved by the fact that has become but an everyday part of their immortal lives, adding more emotional meaning to the scene.

My final complaint (or is that a preference :heh:) is - i demand some romance besides that little teaser in the end! tche ..

Overall the show is a rather memorable one, if for nothing else then for its fairly unique premise. Better visuals would have gone a long way in improving the experience, but overall the story was enjoyable and one i am glad i watched. 7.5/10

Would you happen to have the translation of Mizu Tamari? I love the song even though I don't fully understand its lyrics. It sets the mood for Mermaid Forest very well. Better yet, it's one of my favourite songs to listen to while commuting to work in the morning.

I think the romance aspect was already there, but in the under-stated way that's very typical of Japanese stories. Mana does love Yuta, in her own innocent child-like way. That much was apparent in the final arc and especially in that scene you referenced. Mana's and Yuta's relationship is what kept the whole series together. Specifically in Yuta's case, it's very touching to know he wouldn't have to deal with an eternity of loneliness as long as he has Mana.

I'll agree with the criticisms of cliched plots and goofy animation. They are very much part of Rumiko Takashi's style, which hasn't aged well, I think. At the same time, I admire how she consistently manages to keep her stereotypes fresh. I put it down to her insight on human behaviour. Her characters may be stereotypical, but they retain enough elements to remind us of real people. I believe that is part of what makes her the wildly successful mangaka that she is today.
