When I took a look at it myself, it seems at points they added in swear-words where there shouldn't be, though that might just be an editing choice.
That site's closed, friend. Doesn't say much but more condemnations. I'd like something specific....swearing doesn't seem so bad...why are people so appalled? I'm interested because Kare Kano is supposed to great, and the anime doesn't end properly, correct?

That's true. I'm afraid I can't give you any more factual information. I've been just reading the Chinese versions and never bothered with Tokyopop, knowing that J->C often involves less loss than J->E. Plus, with the packaging Tokyopop did on Chobits, I don't really want to buy Tokyopop unless I have to.
Packaging? What do you mean, the physical binding and covering? The cover art? ...I did notice that the Kodocha and Kare Kano releases both have wierd, fuzzy art on the cover...or maybe that's just a shojo thing...

Kare Kano is my ALL TIME favorite, and the reason why it "doesn't end properly" in the anime is because the manga storyline was only written till that point I think.

PS -- The TokyoPop translation is BAD. Do yourself a favor and find another translation, heck download it off of emule... the translation is still better...

I think that has as much possibility of a second season of Hellsing, or a FFVII-2 in which Aerith gets revived (and no, I'm not counting Kingdom Hearts as FFVII-2 ^^;)
Unless Masami Tsuda really wants to make an animation and go back to Gainax after the situation broke down, don't really look forward to it. I think the AIR anime has a much higher chance of happening (and I'm looking forward to seeing it ^^;)

I've never noticed anything. I've read the two first volumes and waiting for #3 to arrive, and I can't say anything stood out as particulary bad.
Truly, ignorance IS bliss. I like this series.

I really like the manga, but I thought some of the anime was amazing in its own right -- sugoi!~
I haven't seen enough anime to see stuff that Gainax pulled off in some of their more experimental episodes. Like the papercut episode where everyone was an animated papercut figure, superimposed around photos of real landmarks. I remember there were some more quirky things they did, but I'm blanking out right now.
Okay some of the more unique points of Kare Kano aren't so good, namely the "super-duper-recap-before-the-episode-that-manages-to-summarize-everything-that's-gone-on-since-episode-1 (TM)" that happens in every episode, and the 1.5 episodes of full recaps beyond that which were absolutely unnecessary... I was amazed/disgusted at the capacity in which every single episode intro manages to summarize the plotline of all the episodes before, which, by episode 26 (when you're hearing a recap of 1-25), can be somewhat frustrating. But bear with it -- at least the story that's conveyed in the 10-15 short minutes of the actual anime is developed fuller than any other anime episodes in other series.
Whewf, enough of my ranting, I still love Kare Kano.
The music is decent... moody, slightly too melodramatic, and they recycle it just as much as most conventional anime out there. Not to say the music is bad... I still like it because it associates to a character or a mood. Examples:

The music that goes along with Miyazawa, Souichiro, etc. Get the music CDs, they're AWESOME! :love:
If you finally read through my long post, here's my thoughts on why the anime is just about as good as the manga: Just like books, comics leave many of the senses and atmosphere to the imagination of the reader -- your brain thinks of the soundtrack, the voices, etc.
IMHO, the original Japanese version of the Kare Kano anime sacrifices that imagination for the image of the anime director (forgot his name...), but the director's artistic vision and his ideas of the Kare Kano world, conveyed through the anime, is nothing short of wonderful.

No way~` Kare Kano is one of my all-time favorite either manga or anime ^^ suki suki~daisuki desu. er... there must be something wrong~~~ :P
Don't get me wrong, the anime is good. I liked it. But if I compare it to my list of favorite animes, it doesn't rank as high as the manga does on my list of favorite manga. Therefore, at least to me, the manga puts the anime to shame.
I mean, come on. At the cultural fair right after the play, in that one page with Yukino walking away with Arima, everything fell together and the understated stuff, and... god, it's such a good manga.

That's not in the anime because they stopped it right before all that happened... so it's not really fair to favor the manga over what the anime didn't cover yet... ^_^;
But yeah, I really LOVE the manga too. I guess I'll give it a buncha brownie points just for more plot...
BTW, so what happened between the director and GAINAX? Why isn't there a 2nd series? ...wah, I want more anime...
One thing I forgot to add:
DO NOT listen to the English dubbing for Kare Kano anime... everyone I know HATED the dub, and both Miyazawa and Arima (especially him) were TERRIBLE...
Anyways, just speaking from a subtitle fan's perspective...

Which is interesting because over at animeondvd.com in their "English Track" forum, they were considering naming it the "Dub of the Year."
Never ever speak of a dub, if it's from a sub fan's perspective. I never do :D (it's safer that way.)
When the anime was made, they only had like 8 volumes of manga made... I doubt there was anything major happening in the background, and if it did happen, it was the director getting into trouble for spreading out the beginning so much that they were forced to use manga clips for the last 2 episodes. But that's just my opinion, as I have no idea what any of you are talking about.
And I just used that as an example. There were others. Like when Arima was thinking about how he wanted to make love to Yukino. A voice over simply doesn't have the same impact as text in situations like that. Especially when we're talking about KareKano (text placement and word choice are one of the things I love most about it).

Anywho, I find it hard to believe that noone here knows why the anime ended where it did. The reason is because GAINAX pissed off the author. They wanted to focus more on the comedy part of the story, but the author wanted them to keep in the romance aspects that they seemed to be dropping. GAINAX refused, so after the first season, the author refused to let them produce any more of the show. In other words: Until GAINAX makes up with the author THERE WILL BE NO CONTINUATION OF THE ANIME.
Plus, the show was losing popularity by the end of the series (the review episodes may have something to do with that). It probably would have been cancelled soon anyway.

Why not? Viz has been re-releasing Ranma, and the text on the copywrite page reads "New and adapted artwork and text (c)2003" meaning that they took out another copywrite on the material. I'll bet that there are less editing mistakes in this issue of the manga than there were in the first edition printed in 1993.
Viz is probably only re-releasing Ranma b/c its so popular among American readers, they might hope to make a profit or something like that whereas Kare Kano isn't that well known so Tokyopop might consider re-relaeasing it unprofitable...
I've been following the releases of KareKano by TokyoPop and I really like it. As long as I understand what's going on that's fine w/ me. Plus, I saw the anime and watched it in dub by the way so I could read the freakin' texts on the screen. The dub wasn't bad...you'll get use to it.^_^

Um, nevermind. I understand now. I walked into Barnes and Nobles, and they just put up another bookshelf full of manga (salivates). I picked up kare Kano to read- and now I see how they butchered it :*( And the "voices" of the characters don't seem to fit at all. :upset:
See? It's not easily put into specifics, 'cause it'd just get too long. Saying they molested it is simply easier and still gets the point across.

I've never read a copy of the TP Kare Kano, but I own a copy of the japanese, which thoug it's sometimes hard to translate, is really cute, and as far as I can tell *pretty* close to the anime. I thought the anime was really good too. The only part I didn't like, as someone mentioned before, was the way they constantly had to recap everything that ever happened before.... I think they spent a whole episode recapping everything that had happened since the beginning... it's a shame that the anime had to end that way, I would have loved to see more.
The only real difficulty in translating KareKano is getting the subtly of the original in the english version. Everything else is pretty much common sense and shouldn't take a rocket scientist to get it right. But TP screwed up even the most basic of expressions, changed the character's personalities. To put it simply, they messed with everything that made KareKano good. Please just take my word for it, 'cause if you buy the english version to see for yourself, it'll simply increase their sales and make them think it's all right to screw with things.

Oh I don't plan on buying it, if anything I'll buy more of the original japanese series, but I was just curious as to how they'd changed it... sounds pretty bad... Usually though I thought most TP translations were pretty good. I don't have much to compare to, but I've read Marmalade Boy and Mars, as well as Kodocha. I've seen some of Kodocha but I liked the manga much better because it moved a lot faster and was a bit more serious, though it still has the adorable, characteristically Sana funny bits as well.

Snoopycool! Hey this guy is a celebrity. It was his website where I read my first online manga. Flame of Recca when it wasn't available for download I think it was. 1000 pop-ups for a mexican business would pop up every page you turned! That snoopy!!! And then it was removed before I was finished reading it all. That snoopy!!!! Now my favorate manga besides HunterXHunter is Hajime no Ippo and I would love to complain about him being slow with putting up new chapters, but I won't because translating Japanese is a bitch!(at least for me) and people have lives :) I am scared to ask snoopy for a website or something where I could buy the back volumes of HNI in japanese, [hnt,hnt] because I have noticed in his updates he frequently goes ballistic on the smallest things. Ha!. It's actually hilarious. I can only find the damn Chinese language manga of HNI and I can only read Japanese!. I am not sure what the hell this post is about...hmm. In case the manga numbers don't correlate directly, here's what happened in Chinese manga 16:
Arima gets sent to the hospital with his hand wound, and finally makes up with Yukino. The whole "Real Mom vs Arima" thing goes on and is partially resolved when the Stepmom defends Arima against his Mom. Then there's the beginning of the next storyline it seems, where the story may go to Asaba and his pursuit for "the One girl" for him.

According to amazon, vol 17 is out in Japan (crap, need to get that >_<;;). And it's probably still running in LaLa. And I know the Chinese volumes should correspond to the Japanese volumes, (at least the Taiwan version does, haven't really seen any manga in which Japanese and Chinese volumes don't coincide)
Yes, #17 is now out and should also be available from a Japanese bookstore that receives stuff via airmail. Regular ship freight books should be out in a few weeks, I think.

Hi, just a quick question about licensed manga from tokyopop. I want to buy Kare kano, the manga, because I just finished watching kare kano the anime and the ending was pretty abrupt. Well my question is how accurate are the translations from tokyopop? I've never actually bought manga thats been lisenced in the US because all my manga books are from korea. They only cost like 2-3 bucks cause it's made out of cheaper paper. I'm asking because I don't like to read manga or watch anime that been changed by the people who licensed them.
oh also, doesn't anyone know if the manga is still going on in Japan?

I have read on this board that they horribly messed with KareKano. If you search for it, you'll see it mentioned in a few threads.
Some people also say they didn't notice any problems. I guess if you can read the Japanene version and the English, you'd be able to tell for sure.

Can't answer for the Tokyopop translations, haven't seen them. I am pretty sure the manga is still running. I wanted to mention that as far as the end of the anime, vol. 9 is the one that covers the festival (the play is in there), there is more on Sakura and Takefumi and so on.
edit: name of thread should be "Kare Kano question." Asking about licensed manga is fine as long as the question is not "where can I download scans."

To the best of my knowledge, yes, the manga is still being released in Japan.
As for the quality of TokyoPop's translations, I've yet to find anything that bad with them. Though, someone whom can actually compare TP's translation with the actual Japanese volumes would most likely be able to provide better information on this.
There was a thread earlier where we discussed Tokyopop translations, including Kare Kano. I'll see if I can find it again. Here (http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?t=1138) we go.
Btw, it would seem that the Kare Kano manga is still going on in Japan.

Well, I only skimmed the Tokyopop volume one briefly. I don't remember the exact wording in the original version, so I really have no judgement on the translation. However, it seems that quality control was lax, so you have things like "perfect" split across two lines like:
She was perfec

Also, for one of the volumes, the translator wasn't sent the volume after that, so she (I think it's a she) translated バレー(bare-) as ballet instead of volleyball.
the more recent volumes are translated a LOT better
and her name is Miyazawa Yukina

I've read a few books of that series. My friend bought them, so why not? It wasn't the best manga I've ever red, but it wasn't bad.
I've got & read volume 1-8 from Tokyopop now and I can't say I can't find
anything majorly-big-time wrong with it (and since I read the same rumors,
I was trying to nitpick when I read the later volumes).
I only wished Tokypop and other US manga companies used a cheaper price.
Why can manga be 5/6 euro on average in Germany yet $10 in US? Heck, it's
even cheaper in Japan, while things usually are damn expensive there.

I read the first chapter and hated it. I just did not like the style at all. I love romance stories and a lot of people like this one so I'm quite disappointed I can't get by the style to read the story. But ugh...reading it was torture. :(
Hehehe, TronDD, I feel your pain. I don't think I even made it through the first chapter. This was the scanslation back in the day when I'd first gotten into shoujo manga and everyone was like "You've gotta read Kare Kano!" I didn't like the first chapter at all so I just tossed it out, but I've been meaning to go back and give it another try sometime in the future.

The anime really never shows the REAL yoma ( i hope that's the main male character's name).

Wow, one of my favorite manga's of all time is now in the 9th volume.
After reading it I came really shocked and surprized. Aya's play that is performed in the majority of the manga is awesome and very well made. Her statements that the characters for the play, mirror that of Yukino, Maho, and Tsubasa is right on the money.
The story itself alse dealt the the relationship between Sakura and Tonami. In the end of the story the author (Masami Tsuda) mentions that number 9 is essentially the end of the "Yukino Arc" and the start of the "Arima Arc". One can easily assume that the focus of the story will shift from yukino to arima. Also we can also guess that the story will start taking a darker turn because Arima is a conflict with himself and Arima's story is a lot darker overall compared to the overly eccentric yukino.
I really had no point to this post except to say that it is another awesome Kare Kano manga.

The only thing I really know about the later volumes is the 'ballet/volleyball' mixup, in which the translator assumed it was 'ballet' without checking the following volume.

a lot of tokyopop's more recent works are starting to not suck ass (still not as good as Del Rey or ADV however)
Oh really? I may have to buy a few and see their progress, then...
keep in mind i said their translations don't suck that means some of them aren't particularly good either (the infamous ghetto speak in GetBackers...it's already started to wane by vol. 2...when i'm right i'm right ^_^)
Now now, it's not the translations that suck. It's the localization. The translators simply provide a literal text translation to the localization department, who then proceeds to shove their collective heads up their asses and fart out what you see on the printed page.

one of the volumes seriously borked up and had them starting school in the fall, i believe (japanese schools start in spring)
plus other things like changing name spellings (changing "Shouko" to "Shoko"...but that instance is nit picking...most english speakers would pronounce "o" and "ou" sounds in japanese exactly the same way no mater how you spelled it...)

Prepublished in Magnolia (Tonkam's shoujo magazine) as "Elle et Lui", along Godchild and Yami no Matsuei.
I really enjoyed Volume 9, although I also enjoyed the previous volumes as well. I am looking forward to the "Arima Arc" I allow myself to get too involved in their lives. Currently I am worried that dark Arima is going to take over and things between him and Yukino are going to get bad. I don't want to know what happens, the suspense is what makes the story so good.
As for the play, it was great! I didn't expect it to take up nearly an entire volume, but it worked so well. And it must have been fun for Masami Tsuda to write a slightly different story with different characters and be able to incorporate it into Kare Kano. Much better IMO than taking up 40 or so pages to showcase a completely different story (as was done at the end of volume 8) Nothing worse for me that to think I have another chapter to go and find it is a completely different series.
Since I didn't get into this series until well after it was licensed, I think the first 5 volumes were already released, I can't attest to the translations. I will say that the manga is much better than the anime. Again, just my opinion.

Agreed, I was surprized that the story took a huge chunk of the manga. It was very good and I loved every minute of it. Like a good stage play it has some humor, great characters, and of course great drama. I would have loved to see how it would have been animated.

Do you know if we can find this in Quebec? there, we only have what the French make. and i think it takes sometimes before we get what is already published in France.
Just recently saw the anime, (my friend had the dvds and never told me, damn him for making me wait to see this).. well I now want to read the manga but heard the tokyopop edition was something to skip or something. So does anyone can tell me if there is a french edition, and who publish it as well as what is the french name given to the serie if it's not Kareshi Kanojo No Jijou???

- Arima indeed becomes a cop and is happily married to Yukino after she got pregnant (remember, when Soichiro's father finally confronts his mother, she was already bearing her first child) and they have three kids - a girl and two male twins. Yukino became a doctor specialized in reconstructive surgery at a hospital owned by the Arimas (I guess Soichiro's adoptive father/uncle had a hand in that).
- Asaba became a renowned artist - a painter - and lives next to the Arimas (the final arc begins in a joking manner where the narrator pretends that Yukino and Asaba are engaged because Soichiro died, but then Soichiro barges in and shouts, 'that's a lie! that's not how it happened' :heh: and then narrator resumes his tale, accurately this time). Since Soichiro was often away, Asaba became a second father to the Yukino's children. And at one moment, Yukino's daughter, Sakura (a female version of Arima), confesses her love to Asaba (much to his mortification) but he realizes that the one he'd been waiting for all this while...had at long last come to him.
- Maho married Takashi and followed her dream of being a neurologist - and she happens to work at the same Arima hospital where Yukino is a doctor at. They are constantly in touch with each other.
- Tsubasa is married to her 'brother' (Kazuma) and becomes a homemaker. She also models for his cd covers.
- Kazuma and co. (Yin & Yang) are still rocking around, reaping lots of success and awards. Nothing much to say, except that they seem to pursue a partnership with Reiji (Soichiro's father) from time to time. Reiji writes the songs and Kazuma sings them, much like when they met each other.
- Tsubaki and Takefumi both left their families, traveled around the world and became ensconced in the studies of lost civilizations. Tsubaki became an archaeology professor at a U.S. university while Takefumi ended up a linguist specialized in ancient characters. He also learnt to speak eight languages along the way.
- Rika became the prize seamstress for Tsubasa's father, a famous fashion designer.
- Aya became a novelist and her editor is no other than Kano, Yukino's youngest sister. She still has problems meeting deadlines and such.
- Tsukino, Yukino's other sister, started a career as a tennis player but had to retire from professional tennis when she suffered an injury. She then switched to being a capable coach.
- Reiji kept his word and kept in touch with his son, although he still remained in the U.S. (I guess he paid Soichiro a visit from time to time but he's still playing there)
That's all, I guess. I have read the last volume raw but I still had to consult Wikipedia to see what it was all about.;)

And yea its a really wonderful series...The "arima" arc wasnt exactly to my liking since it kindof excluded all of their friends and didnt really give yukino much to do especially towards its conclusion.
With that said it did have a very satisfying and nicely poetic ending. ;)
After watching the anime recently and being totally disappointed with the ending, I jumped on the manga and ended up racing my way though all 21 volumes in about a week. :rolleyes:
This is probably the longest manga I have read so far, and I had to say I really enjoyed every bit of it. The characters were just so wonderful and... alive that I wanted to know more and more about them. I even enjoyed the melodrama of the "Arima Arc" (and I'm normally not that big on melodrama). I especially liked the last volume, too.
For some reason I always enjoy "x years later" epiloges, and this was a nice one that give you a look at how everyone was doing. A wonderful, warm and fuzzy "happy ending".

I got the first 19 volumes as they were being released (by TokyoPop) but I must say that I didn't enjoy the Arima Arc at all, I can't say there was anything wrong with it but I just personlly didn't like the melodrama :) Or perhaps the lack of comedy was related to my lack of interest in the later volumes.
I didn't actually realise that the series finished with Vol 21 :heh: Since I think I will also enjoy the final volume (thanks for the quick synopses) I'll have to buy that as well. Hmmm, can I hold out in not buying Vol 20.

Well, I would have to say I liked the more light-hearted and funny stuff from the earlier volumes, too. By the point I got to the "Arima Arc" though, I was so "in-to" the characters that I still enjoyed reading about them, even though like I said I'm generally not a big fan of melodrama. ;)

After the rather "heavier" subject matter of the story arc that proceeded it, the more happy and up-beat tone of the last two volumes was a nice choice by the author and a great way to wrap up the series.

Ah this is good to hear. So it sounds like I might enjoy Vol 20 as well, guess I need to order that with Vol 21 as well then.
I'm another one who got hooked by the anime, began reading the TokyoPop releases from the beginning hoping for a better ending than the Gainax series. While I enjoyed the manga as it developed from light to dark, I eventually lost interest with the soap opera-ness of it all and just stopped buying at around 18 or 19... I really can't even remember which. Maybe its time to pick it up and go buy the last issues afterall. :)

Ahhh, I just finished volume 21, i love these endings, it feels so complete. im glad the author didnt leave anything out although it was a great ending, i think the transition from when they ended school to 16 years later was a little rushed. This is only because I wanted to see Arima and miazawa's wedding and the birth of her children, but thats my only complaint :)
actually ... something i've been thinking of last time i reread it ... when is the first time its suggested that Yukino and Arima have taken their love to the next level (from 'couple' to 'lovers') ... as far as i can see its just after Takefumi have landed in early volume 7 when they are schoolwork late in the afternoon

Kare Kano looks a great manga series, as it's the genre that I love the most anyway :)
