Wow I searched for ipod in the forum, seems everyone has such anti-ipod sentiments. I started this thread hoping to hear from people who actually have an ipod and enjoy it. I already heard from people who hate it, so no need to post flames here.
I got an ipod (20G) for Christmas so I'm still in the process of uploading stuff onto it. I think the click-wheel is very nice. and using playlists and category sort is pretty fast too.
I don't really like the ipod headphones so I just use my old headphones from my discman. It was fun browsing through iMix in iTunes store but I didn't really find anything I liked. The celebrity playlists were interesting. Especially Snoop Dogg...his list was pretty tame. I want to see Eminem's playlist! =)
Also, a question for ipod users, what kind of case/protective stuff do you have? They all seemed pretty pricey. The HP tatoo looks cool but I'm not that creative. I'm thinking of just making my own case out of cloth maybe...haha.
Share your comments and suggestions here. Thanks.
I have a 3rd generation 20GB iPod (the one with four buttons above the touch wheel) and I love it. It's been great for the last year I've owned it. I've got 3,300 or so songs on there (I rip at 192kbit AAC so I can't fit 5,000) and it's perfect for long car rides, walking to class, working in labs—basically any activity where portable music would be good.

I actually don't use a case at all, most of them are too pricey or lame looking to me. If Apple had offered them when I first got my iPod, I would've gotten their set of iPod Socks, which are basically just form-fitting knit bags (socks!) for your iPod in a bunch of different colors. I always keep my iPod in my pocket or a bag, so having a scratch-guard like that would be much better than some thick "protective" case. As it is the back is pretty scratched, but I'm over it. So making your own case out of cloth would probably be a great idea if you can.

But yeah, I love my iPod. It's sweet.

I don't mind iPod except for its price.

Another pointer is that you can install linux on it

Don't have one ... because of the price.

But 2 friends have a second gen 20 gigs ... and no complaints so far. Very stylish. It's always a pleasure borrowing it for a bit.

have you guys heard of MP4?
its pretty tight.
you can listen to mp3's, and FM radio.
and the best part is,
YOU CAN WATCH VIDEO!
yes thats right, you can watch the lastest Naruto episode on a 3.5 inch wide screen.
it can play many kinds of forms,
avi, mpeg, asx, ogm (probably as much as your computer can)
the 40gb one is 600 dollars, but at ebay, you can find it cheaper.
i want my mp4 now. :)

My 20GB 3G iPod is simply indispensible. I got it November of 2003 at the LAOX Apple-kan in Akihabara (woot) and since then take it everywhere (if I don't forget to charge it!)

I will say that the main thing that drew me to it was the effortless support of Japanese, which is essential for me since several thousand of my 4k songs have Japanese ID3 tags (and I wasn't going to convert them to romaji for another mp3 player.)

Hell because of my iPod I recently ditched Winamp and moved to Foobar2000, because Winamp being the old beast underneath that it is doesn't support Unicode. This was causing conflicts between it and iTunes, which while it can read Shift-JIS doesn't always convert them properly giving me fits. That and ephpod doesn't like Shift-JIS either (which is a good utility if all you want is a syncing application and not a full media player that is iTunes.)

Anyway, I don't see why someone would need 20+ gigs to listen to mp3s. I have a 1 gig sandisk mp3 player, and while it can't hold the contents of all my cds, it does hold everything I actually listen to. I have 280 songs on it, and I could probably put another 15-20 before filling it. Even if it didn't hold all the songs I want, it's not like it's that hard to change the songs on it.

The HP tatoo is pretty cool, geeky, but cool. But I guess something like a tenmaPod (http://www.wannabefansubs.net/tenma/index.php?showtopic=171) is something an anime otaku with an iPod can't go without?

hmm~ i have recently also acquired an ipod as a birthday gift (november),

other than what is clearly my fault (my motherboard lacked USB2.0/firewire), and my songs lack Artist/Album Information, The ipod is fine.

However, i feel that i already am recluse enough without the additional stimulus of the ipod, so i generally leave it at home.

not that i hate it, i primarily feel ambivalent towards it.

I love it, because it looks the best, it is the most stylish (in my opinion), plays with sufficient audio quality and volume.

However, i dislike the burden of responsibility for it. I have to clean it (and its scratches) make sure it doesnt get wet (its been raining in LA), and Make sure it doesnt get stolen.

Case: wtf is the point of an ipod if nobody sees it? might as well get a creative zen or an archos.

or: clear and plastic works :)

PS: engrave your ipod somehow. then it is undisputably yours.

Though I'd revive this thread. Found this story interesting:

Apple's iTunes raises privacy concerns A new version of Apple Computer's popular iTunes software, released Tuesday, is drawing barbs from privacy advocates for sending information about computer users' playlists back to Apple.

The new music software includes a "MiniStore" window, which provides recommended links to Apple's music download service when a listener actively clicks on a song in their personal playlist, including songs that haven't been purchased from the iTunes store.

To provide those recommendations, the software sends information about the selected song, such as artist, title and genre, back to Apple. But the software also transmits a string of data that is linked to a computer user's unique iTunes account ID, computer experts have found.

I have a 60 gb ipod video. While it is pretty unnecessary to have a 60 gb mp3 player, it does hold a lot of converted anime fansubs, which is good for road trips with a car power adapter:D also it serves well as a secondary hard drive. Plus the video out function and the abilities to read text documents makes it more versatile. Only draw back is that I got the black one and small hairline scratches become extremely visible on it.... also the battery life is pretty poor while watching a movie.

Though I'd revive this thread. Found this story interesting:

Apple's iTunes raises privacy concernsJust a follow up to this story. It looks like Apple "tweaked" their iTunes software due to privacy concerns:

Apple tweaks iTunes following privacy concerns Following a wave of privacy concerns last week, Apple Computer has begun prominently notifying customers about a new recommendation feature in its iTunes software, as well as spotlighting a simple way to turn it off.

The new feature, a "MiniStore" pane in the software, provides music recommendations to iTunes users based on the songs currently in the software's active playlist. To do so, it sends information about those songs back to Apple, even if the tracks weren't originally purchased from the iTunes Music Store.

[...snip...]

"As you select items in your library, information about that item is sent to Apple, and the MiniStore will show you related songs or videos," the note says. "Apple does not keep any information related to the contents of your music library."

The notification also provides a prominent new pointer to a button that will turn off the MiniStore, which does not exchange any information while inactive. As before, the feature can also be turned off by going to the menu of commands at the top of the software or by selecting a keyboard command.

This has been a recent "media" issue that has now come to the courts. It has to do with hearing damage an portable audio devices (in this case, the iPod). Apple faces suit over iPod-related hearing loss

A Louisiana man has filed a class action suit against Apple Computer, saying the computer maker has failed to take adequate steps to prevent hearing loss among iPod users.

The suit, filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in San Jose, Calif., charges that the iPod music player can produce sounds of up to 115 decibels even though some studies suggest that listening to music at that level for 28 seconds a day can cause damage over time. The suit, filed on behalf of John Kiel Patterson and all other iPod buyers, seeks monetary damages to compensate for the hearing loss suffered by iPod users, as well as a share of Apple's iPod profits.

The suit also seeks to force Apple to offer a software upgrade to limit the iPod's output to 100 decibels as well as provide headphones designed to block out external noise.

"Millions of consumers have had their hearing put at risk by Apple's conduct," the suit states.

I don't hate Ipod. If it plays music, and isn't insanely expensive, it works. When I wanted an mp3 player, first thing I did was look around the net for reviews and price comparison. I ended up with the Creative Zen Micro, and I'm happy with it.

Well, I have an Ipod Nano and I think it is very convienient. I can put a lot of music on it, listen to it on the go, and even hook it up to my car radio. The Nano is small enough for me. As for the other Ipods, I think they are still too big. But, for video playback, I guess it isn't all that bad in size anymore.

iPOD Video: Is it worth it?

What do people think of their iPOD Video? After making a killing on my income tax returns (gotta love great tax guys) I've really been considering getting an iPOD Video. Only problem though is I'd probably only use it at work during my lunch break and in my car (after installing an iPOD ready radio) I don't know if I'd use it all that much around the house. Did it make a huge impact on any skeptics out there?

I have three iPods, from frequent purchases over the past few years. The second generation iPod, the Nano 4GB, and the most recent purchase being the Video 60GB. I have had no problems with either of the three, nor has my girlfriend with her Nano, and we both use it fairly frequently, plugging the thing into amps for small parties, etc... As for hearing loss, I'm a lover for nightclubs, with headphones as part of my head for as long as I can remember. If I were to lose my hearing so be it, it'll have to be a risk I'm willing to take.

I've got a 60gig Video (along with a 30gig 4g Color) and I can't spend a day without at least one of them. I mostly use it for listening to music on my daily commute as well as throughout the work day.

The actual video part of the iPod for me isn't really that big of a deal. I've got a couple videos on it right now, and it's not that bad trying to watch them. However it just happens for me that I'm rarely in a situation where I would want to be able to watch videos on my iPod rather than another media device (for me, my laptop would be a better media player for plane rides, etc).

But, if you're looking to get a non-Nano iPod, you pretty much get the video regardless. And do remember, you'd need to purchase Quicktime Pro if you want to make your own videos for the iPod, and not purchase them off iTunes.

To me, the biggest advantage the 5G iPod (Video) has over the the many other nameless gizmos is its size and space. Its size basicaly means you can fit it into any pocket any time, and its space means you can, obviously, hold alot of stuff. ITunes is also extremely smple and easy to use. It can also be used as a 30G/60G portable harddrive too.

About the video, when it came out imo it was damn good. But just recently, I was shown a thingie that costed $200 and can hold 20G, watch videos that was near iPod quality, listen to music, and surf the internet, and an another thingie that costed $350, can surf internet, listen to music, take pictures, put notes, and wach videos. I didn't check the video quality of the last one tho, and I'm sure they could've done other stuff too.

If you plan on using the 5G iPod just for watching videos, imo it would be kind of a waste. The main feature of an iPod is still is, and will continue to be, listening to music. There tons of other stuff now apparently that can play videos with near quality to an iPod, and do tons of other stuff too.

And about the Quicktime Pro comment, no, don't waste money there. Get the Videora iPod Converter, its just as good if not better for converting videos to iPod and its free.

I usually in some form or another have shuffle on, even if it is just an album or artist that I'm listening to. Right now on my 60gig I don't have many playlists, just one of about 1500 songs. That's the list I go to when I just need some music I like but don't want to get too specific. Obviously with that many songs, it needs to be on shuffle.

I got a black 30GB video iPod two weeks ago... I was shopping around for a 20+ gig mp3 player to house all of my mp3s and have some space left, and although the iPod was not the cheapest option, I bought it because of its small dimensions, video capability and just bc I wanted to see what the fuss is about. The iPod is my third mp3 player ever (the first was a Thomson CD-mp3 player and the second a 512MB no-name flash memory player that stopped working a month ago), and I'm happy with it. I don't watch videos on it nearly as much as I thought I would, though, but I still think it's a nice option to have. I tried watching anime on it, and the subs are readable enough as long as you hold it like you would your cell phone. I can imagine my eyes would get tired after a while though.

What annoys me a little is the way the iPod arranges the songs -- by song name, artist, album etc... I would rather have kept my folder structure the same as it is on my PC bc I'm much more used to it. I just wonder if other HDD mp3 players do it like iPod or can you keep the folders the way they were. I'm getting used to it though and I'm quite impressed by the sound quality, especially compared to my previous player. The earbuds are no Logitech 2.1 setup that I have on my PC :), but the sound is good and there's even a fairly decent amount of bass... definitely better than what I expected.

Wow people still use MD players? It was cool when it came out in the 1990s with track names and full digital write-rewrite capacity with ATRAC recording, but once they started going with weird stuff like Hi-MD, Net-MD, I lost confidence in the future of MDs.

However, I won't deny that I loved it back then as well. Which brand did you own? My portable one was a Sharp, the one in my car stereo was by Carrozzeria, and the home radio was made by Victor.

it might be too late now if you let it migrate your collection, but there is a simple option in the View -> Preferences -> Advanced -> "Keep iTunes Music Folder Organized"

uncheck it and it shouldn't do anything to your existing structure. i've never looked for a way to change newly import stuff though. That always goes to the iTunes standard i think.

I believe he was talking about how the iPod categorizes the music by Artist or Album. As for the iTunes option to organize music for me, I actually like it. I keep my music organized by Artist -> Album - > Song anyway, so letting iTunes deal with renaming folders and files after I alter the ID3 tag is fine by me.

On this particular CD, most of the songs were collaborations with other artists, and iTunes created a brand new folder for each song, because it thought the artist was different for each track.

I almost always use on-the-go playlists, so sometimes finding a song using the iPod categories is a pain in the ass, because not all my songs have an id tag and the song name is weird, like starting with the track nr. or whatever. I should fix that but I'm too lazy :)

Sony R70, R909 and N909. They are pretty old now so I might consider a MP3 player...Also using Sony MDR-E888SP, how are the equalizer on Ipod with okay headphones?

Yeah, that stuff is horrible, but I think it fixes it when you rename the artist to the same name. Just put the other artitsts' name in the title instead.

Is anyone using a case for their video ipod? What is it and do you recommend it? What color is your ipod?
I'm thinking of buying one but not before I buy a case.

Or just select all the tracks, go into the Get Info screen, and mark them as a Compilation. That'll stick all the tracks in an Album named folder under "Compilations," instead of storing each track in a differently named artist folder. Easy.

I have the mini and I love it....but do you think Apple will stop supporting them since they don't make them anymore?

I've got the 30GB (white) one, and it's so neat ^^ love everything about it, I can even watch anime on it lol. It was given as a gift though, so I'm really grateful to that person who gave it to me ;)

My mother won a free iPod nano for me in August last year. It's wonderful, but I don't use it very often. I tend to borrow our Japanese exchange student's iPod mini. She has more music than I do. I think I'll use my iPod more this summer when we go on a road trip. {I need something to drown out the singing from the far back seat of the van.} I want to get a case for it, though. I'm so paranoid about scratching my iPod's surface. Vajacases.com has some beautiful, but expensive, leather cases. I'll probably bite the bullet and buy one of those in the near future.

Sorry to revive the thread again, but I just got an new 4th gen 8gb ipod nano and am currently loving it haha ^^.

I spent like 2-3 hours putting songs/movies/pictures on it and searching up information on how to use it again. I used to have a 2nd gen 20gb regular ipod but it broke and so I decided to buy the cheap meizu. After a year or two of using the meizu i decided to give it to my sister (who always wanted a small mp3 player). But now I have a nano and its cool ^^. Only wish could customize the interface a little, like the background, but whatever. I also spent an hour scanning in cover art before i found out i could probably just save myself time and just search it up on google haha.

It took me awhile to figure out how to convert .mkv anime files to be viewed on the nano comfortably. I had to extract the files out, remake the .mkv container without the subtitles, use a subtitle program to enlarge the font, convert the both of them into .mp4 files xD. But its finally working out nicely hehe. It maybe small and I doubt im going to primarily be watching videos on my nano , but its just soo cool to have anime on my ipod haha ^^.

I have a Zen (Creative) player, and it doesn't really differ from the iPod much, except it's a lot cheaper since it ain't made by Apple (anything made by Apple costs two times as much as the other identical products, since it's stylish or so).

I compared it to my buddy's iPod touch and yeah I actually would prefer my own over that :D Way to waste battery with touch and such massive screen.

People have complained of Zen crashing, but hasn't happened to me over the years. Maybe a different model.

How different is an Ipod from an mp3 player?Well from what I know, iPod has iTunes and iPods tend to be "long and thin" rather than "short and fat".

Edit: Did some comparison, and it's weird how an iPod nano and my Zen player are identical in specs. :p

I'm not exactly sure what you mean how different an ipod is from an mp3 player, since an ipod is basically a mp3 player. Although the newer ones tend to be more of a portable media player (PMP) since they have video and photo viewing capabilities. I do have some old mp3 players which were basically portable cd players that played mp3 files if thats what you meant. If you meant how are they different from other mp3 players out there then its probably best to do your own research. There are a bunch of quality mp3 players out there to choose from. After getting my first ipod as a gift from my brother and seeing my friend's iriver, I ended up doing some research on portable players out there. Since then i have tried out a bunch of players. I've even tried some of those cheap mp4 players from china. The Meizu line is pretty nice and has customizable fireware. I do miss my gemei x750 though, that was a nice player haha ^^.

Haha, now that Eggs in a Bottle mentioned it, I think i should have chosen a creative zen instead. I forgot that zens have a memory expansion slot. i have an unused sd card with a bunch of mp3s and photos on (it was for my old phone). I could have just stuck it in the zen xD.

Oh well, I have my ipod now and am currently loving it. Luckily there are programs out there to manage my ipod other than itunes, even though i do have it installed on my computer.

Oh, that'd be due to the multi coloured background with silhouettes dancing when they have the ipod highlighted in white that make it special.
It was such a neat gimmick that soon enough anime versions appeared for it and thus apple were getting free advertising on the net, luring more innocent people with their silhouette dance of doom and increasing their flock of sheep everyday.

It's no different to the ton of other mp3 players out there, aside from being made by Apple and glamorised to death.

You forgot the part about it having an interface that doesn't cause pain to use. :D

But it is.
I actually had trouble with it the first few times I used it, just wanted buttons to press like most things in life that we operate technology with, not a wheel to turn around to navigate. x.x
But of course I forgot, Apple creates idiot proof products *cough*
And oh, the use of many flourescent colours, naturally.

Saying that, its interface hasn't become simplier as more and more new and "updated" versions appear that's for sure. (It 'used' to simply play music, the latest versions can do a hell of a lot more, i believe)
People are just used to it the same way we're all used to the Windows interface and we all know just how "great" windows is.

Eitherway, i'll leave here for those who wish to express their iLove as the topic states :p

I have this 6th gen. iPod, and it's pretty bad. The touch wheel doesn't always respond, and nothing is compatible with it yet. The only that's keeping me from trading it with an older one is 120GB I have xD.

Urrghh, iPods..

I don't like it personally.

The touch wheel is annoying, turning it off is a pain, and searching for music is also a pain the first few weeks of using it.

I prefer my Sony Walkman W910i . .

iPods CAN'T CALL PEOPLE, NOW CAN THEY??

I own a iPod 5g and used to own a iPod touch, and now the iPods without the touch screen feels obsolete because I replaced all my iPods with a iPhone which have the same capabilities as the iPod but with calling and mobile broadband features.

Before I even own a iPod, I been using a PocketPC as a mp3 player (before the iPod Video came out) and it was difficult to use. It kept locking up on me and freezing although it has a touch screen and can play videos.

Apple needs to make their user interface more, well, user friendly. I don't own an ipod simply because I've seen my friends with ipods trying to use them. It looked quite unpleasant. I went and bought a 120GB Zune (I know. I'm not welcome here any longer.) simply because it was easier to use the program associated with it.

iPods Are just the one of the greatest things I can think of.
I used to have the new green nano and I got it during christmas time so it was engraved. Its pretty easy to use plus nice looking.

The thing I hate about the iPods are not really the ipods but the cases :heh:
they're just the worst I can think of that Apple sells.
They're not water resistant and the make the screen look... weird.

Never was and never have been a fan of IPod . Was forced to use IPod for some years due to the lack of alternatives . But for more than a year have switched to a Nokia PDA and haven't used IPod since . But this parody is sweet wouldn't mind using Joy Pod from Gintama : D
