Its based on a novel thats serialized in the seinen(young men's) novel magazine The Sneaker.
A manga based on the novel is serialized in the shounen manga magazine Shounen Ace.
Genre: Seinen, Comedy
Edit:
Suzumiya Haruhi is originally a novel thats serialized in the seinen(young men's) novel magazine The Sneaker (the same magazine that serialized the seinen novel Trinity Blood).
For now there are 8 volumes released of this novel, here are the covers:

This manga got cancelled (read this page of this thread to find why).
A new Suzumiya Haruhi manga is serialized in Shounen Ace magazine.
For now there are 2 volumes released of this new manga, here are the covers:

Genre: Seinen, Comedy.
The anime is going to be called: Suzumiya Haruhi no Yutsu (Suzumiya Haruhi Series)
From AnimeNfo (http://www.animenfo.com/animetitle,3508,qusbqz,suzumiya_haruhi.html):
Not long after the entrance of the school, Suzumiya Haruhi introduced herself in a strange way.
“I’m not interested in ordinary people. If you came from outer space, or from the future, or you have a supernatural power, come to my place”
The classmates wondered whether she was serious or just kidding, but the rumor had speared over the school less than a month, and she became famous among all the students.
Genre: Seinen, Comedy.
I'll update the first post with the covers of the novel and manga soon.

Sounds like it could be interesting. I'll be sure to look for it when it's released.
My dear Mikuru-tan will finally be shown animated!!! M,moe~!
Of course, I wouldn't mind seeing Nagato Yuki as well.
First post was updated with the covers.
This is the cover of the young men's (seinen) novel magazine The Sneaker:

The bishoujo on the cover looks really cute  gothic lolita (gothloli) style  could she be from Suzumiya Haruhi novel or maybe some other novel from the magazine >.< she's really cute, I hope she's from Suzumiya Haruhi novel, I want to see her in the anime :D

According to 7andy (http://www.7andy.jp/books/detail?accd=R0181490): Volume 1 of Suzumiya Haruhi manga will be released on 25/4/2006
I already checked where its serialized. its serialized in Shounen Ace magazine. (I'll post the cover when its available)
There are two Suzumiya haruhi manga? , and both of them are running in the same magazine Shounen Ace  (check first post for the other manga).
Probably I got something wrong >.< can someone explain this?

It looks like there was originally a manga based on the books, back in 2004, but it faired poorly and ended after 1 volume.
Now theres a new one thats currently in serialization, and the first volume will be released next month.

Thanks a lot rale :)
Ahh Thelastguardian, I remember you said something about the manga being horrible with the artwork (from the previous deleted Suzumiya Haruhi thread), that expalins why it ended after 1 volume >.<
I'm really hoping that the current manga running in Shounen Ace will be much better, and maybe someone will scanlate it >.<
Anyway, I'm waiting for the cover of it to come out, and maybe the cover will give us a clue about the artwork of the new Suzumiya Haruhi manga.

If you put the novel and the manga side by side with their pages open, you would ask "ehhh, what happened?" That's what I did.
Anyway the new mangaka is the one responsible for the manga for this (famous, I guess, given its history) series

Basically, a manga was released back in 2004 which covered "Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu" (the first volume) whose art was done by Mizuno Makoto.
It got harsh reviews saying that artwork does not match Itou Noiji's (illustrator for the original novel) and the story being abridged to leave the reader clueless to the mystery.
The manga was scrapped into "kuro-rekishi" ("dark history" = anachronism; a material that is viewed as it never happened and not to be discussed again. Other notable examples include "Macross II" and "Highlander 2").
Simply put: It's so awful, it is considered to be non-existent.
So it's confirmed that the air date will be 4/2.
The anime HP design is brilliant, I say.

Well actually, that is how the webpage was described in the novel - Suzumiya Haruhi drew her own pictures and uploaded it as the background. As a pun, the illustrations for the backgrounds were done by Hirano Aya - the seiyuu for Suzumiya Haruhi.
The credit below reads

That page (http://www.haruhi.tv/) is impossible to mistake for any other. It looked like a mess to me at first, but its uniqueness gives it something special, especially since it was drawn by Suzumiya Haruhi herself (Hirano Aya (http://hashihime.atspace.com/Hashi_seiyuusC.html#hiranaya)). As my eyes learn to see it, I've gradually come to like it. And today a link showed up there that actually worked, lol.
As a fan of Gotou Yuuko (http://hashihime.atspace.com/Hashi_seiyuus.html#gotouyuuko) (Kaede in Shuffle, Nanami in Lamune) I'd like to point out that she is one of the two other main girls in this show (Mikuru). The third main girl (Yuki) is played by Chihara Minori (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=22271), who plays Erika (the tall foreign girl) in Lemon Angel Project (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=6095) (which I am blogging (http://hashihime.blogspot.com/)).
It may be an indication of how much this show is being anticipated in Japan that there are already four threads on it at 2channel: almost 4000 posts.
Finally, here is a link from 2channel to some video captures of a TV feature on Gotou Yuuko posing for publicity shots for the show:

Not great shots. For fanboys only.
Kyoto Animation's involved, so I'll definitely watch it. Hopefully the animation quality is up there with the work they did on Air. Anyone have a summary of what the series is about? It sounds like Thelastguardian did have a summary posted in this thread at one point, but the forum crash wiped it out. :(
Edit: After I posted this, I did find a couple sentences on Google that describe the plot...based on this I'm looking forward to seeing it even more, it's an interesting premise:
The plot is comedy adventure and something like the American film Bruce Allmighty excpet in a school setting and with an odd twist. Kyon is a highschool student who's life is turned upside down by classmate, Suzumiya Haruhi. She just happens to possess a special power which warps the world around her be any way she wants. The twist is she isn't aware of this.

That is such a dull way of putting it XD .
The novels are fun to read because they are written in an unique first person point of view.
It is a joy to read the thoughts of the main character as Suzumiya embarks on different adventures unknowningly. Dragging the kicking and screaming main character with her, that is.
And of course, it is up to her personal support squad to deal with her "effects" on the universe.
Then again, they have no literature value whasoever. Light novels, indeed.

If you consider its popularity right now, compared to when the first volume was released almost 3 years ago, I'd say Suzumiya Haruhi managed to burn on brightly quite well.
It's another story with the English community though, of course.
Then again, they have no literature value whasoever. Light novels, indeed.
Literature is literature, it doesn't matter what kind of writing it is. And the value of a piece of literature is never determined by any one person. A novel may be nothing more than a bore fest for one, but a life changing experience for another.
Suzumiya Haruhi's unique point is that while it doesn't seem very deep on the surface (comedies abound with all the characters getting themselves into all sorts of situations. Haruhi seems to be nuts all the time, Mikuru-chan always getting abused, Nagato always... reading (and the guys doing whatever they do) and things seems to be revolved around a ridiculous school club created for a nonsense reason), it's actually dotted with memorable, dramatic moments (especially when they come in heavily contrasted against the usual comedy) that makes you snap to attention. And for me, that makes this novel more interesting to read than a novel that's always focused on drama.
I'm listening through the backlog of SOS-dan Radio Branch (http://lantis-net.com/haruhi/index.html) right now. Surprisingly interesting. ^^
Volume 8 of the seinen novel Suzumiya Haruhi will be released next month (April 2006).
I'll post the cover of it when its available.

It's coming tomorrow, it's coming tomorrow~ *waku waku*
Then again, this sakuga level... Kyoani doesn't disappoint here either.
I've listened to all the radio meetings (up to no.8 now), and I'm looking forward to the airing ^^
...M, Mikuru-chan's "teheri~"... That might be a little... dangerous...
Thanks Sushi-Y for the images :)
I just want to corect something I said >.<
The 8th volume of the seinen novel will not be released this april but on May 1st (1/5/2006).
The first volume of the new manga will be released on 26/4/2006.
This info should be correct since its according to the publisher :P

Yes, those arts are by Itou Noizi, the illustrator for the novel (she's also the illustrator for the "Shakugan no Shana" light novel series).
As for the anime art quality, those screenshots in the picture I posted above are from the anime (hence my comment about the sakuga level).
Anyway, it's almost time for the airing. Too bad I probably won't see it until tomorrow.

And we have a winner!
One of the funniest single anime episodes I've seen. Your mileage may vary, since this kind of smart (?) Pythonesque absurdity is the humor I love best. The cat clinging to the witch's shoulder and continually almost falling off just about killed me.
humor: A
animation: A (Kyoto Animation!)
backgrounds: A
Chihara Minori (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=22271) as Yuki: A (She does a nice job with the ED, too.)
Gotou Yuuko (http://hashihime.atspace.com/Hashi_seiyuus.html#gotouyuuko) as Mikuru: A++ (A match made in heaven.)
I've blogged (http://hashihime.blogspot.com/)the first episode, with some screencaps.
Please note the change of avatar/sig from Tamura Yukari (Kashimashi) to Gotou Yuuko.
Kyo-Ani does it again!
Bringing "Asahina Mikuru no Bouken Episode 00" as the first episode introduction is the best way to the craziness of Suzumiya Haruhi to people who haven't read the novel, yet a great way to bring out laughter to those who did. BRILLIANCE!!!
Other genga studios should definitely learn a lesson/tip or two on bringing and maintaining god-level sakuga qualities.
I just hope Asahina Mikuru's off-key OP (In my opinion, this was genius at work!! It totally brings in the "shitty amateur video" jive!!) doesn't put people off of a terrific show wwww.

Seconded. While I was already expecting something from that one, the first episode definitely managed to surprise me in a good way. Well, I took a look on the manga firsthand, so the begining was quite a "wtf" and it took me the opening and another half minute to get that they were making a movie.
Anyway, the comedy level is quite high, though it's more to the fact that the movie and its making were portrayed as a quite ambiguous project. And due to its theme it manages to become a great mahou shoujo parody.
The character designs are pretty nice and animation is really good. What I liked the most were all the pans and the amateurish effects which exactly captured the essence of such a "fan/student"-made production. :)
Overall a highly unexpected but moreso an enjoyable watch. Definitely recommended, if only for the nice designs and animation and the characters. :P
Omg that was amazing, I can't believe they actually went with volume 2's movie as the opener. Oh, and I laughed so hard at everything. Kyon's constant tsukko... I mean narration, Koizumi's bouyomi, the teachers busting onto the roof... everthing.
And excellent job with the "home video" look, they got the wobbly camera, awkward zooms, bad picture quality (and I thought it was the anime itself at first), bad cuts, outside interruptions... they even got the overexposure/underexposure effect (like the cherry blossom scene in the end).
It's scary, I'm already 100% certain I'll be buying the DVD for this when it comes out, if only for this episode.
The next episode seems like it's finally going to backtrack to be beginning, can't wait. ^^ (By the way, are we going to count it as episode 1 like Haruhi says, or 2 like Kyon says?)

I can't get the Op out of my head:heh: This plus the interesting choice of soundtrack is what attracted me to the show. After the "shitty" OP and one of the "fighting sequences" I was hooked, the one with the eye beam combo:eyespin:. If quality like this continues from ep 1/2:uhoh: on then we have a definite keeper.:heh:

I just had a brief look at 2channel, and there is certainly a lot of interest: over 1000 posts in the 12 hours since the show aired. But there are definitely two camps:
1. "This is stupid. What's going on, why is she in a bunny costume, is she a mahou shoujo? You must have had to read the novel to enjoy this."
2. "This is great. Hilarious. The surface may seem stupid, but there's really a lot there. I'm so excited."
Clearly not all Japanese understand the better class of Japanese humor, lol. This episode reminds me of the smart self-mocking absurdity of British shows like Monty Python and Absolutely Fabulous.
The decision to start with the movie was really genius, like kj1980 said. I've only read a bit of the manga, and found the way it started a little slow-moving. This way, you are drawn into the Haruhi universe right away.
If this keeps up, Ichigo Mashimaro will have a competitor as the funniest anime I've ever seen.
I vote for this being episode 1, and next week episode 2. It's not as if this is a prologue. In any case, it's easier to keep track of the number of episodes if we don't go all coder and number the first item number zero. The file I saw was called "The Unhappiness of Suzumiya Haruhi, episode 1: Asahina Mikuru's Adventure, episode 0."
Oh, and I have a question for kj or someone else: how to translate the title. Is it Haruhi who is melancholy/depressed/unhappy, or is it that she makes the people around her that way?

1 = First-time viewers, or those who are not familiar with the novel.
2 = People who know something about the novel? Or maybe first-timers who just liked the episode?
For anyone who have read the novel, (at least, those who have read up to or beyond Suzumiya Haruhi no Tameiki (the second volume)) this first episode was pretty much pure brilliance. (To put it another way, those of us who are "interested" enough to follow the novels can all appreciate these kind of situational humors found throughout the series)
Oh, and I have a question for kj or someone else: how to translate the title. Is it Haruhi who is melancholy/depressed/unhappy, or is it that she makes the people around her that way?
涼宮ハルヒの憂鬱 Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu translates to "Suzumiya Haruhi's Depression". The reason why she's "depressed" should be quite obvious for anyone who's familiar with the background story. If not, it'll become clear soon enough.

I'm quite new to the story, but I love the animation. The hand-held camera work was hilarious even from a visual stand point alone. The choppy cuts, people in the background holding up light cards, blurry camera shots, over-exposure/under-exposure, reaching for scripts (reminds me of my college days)….daring stuff for an anime. Just loved it. The preview animation looks awesome. From the brief snips of the preview (the stairwell scene), there seems to be nice depth & shadowing. Great character designs.
Does the cat really talk? Hope so. That would be a total bonus (for me).
Wow...that has to be one of the most unique first episodes I've ever seen. Kyoto Animation has outdone themselves--can't wait to see this subbed, it was funny even watching it raw and I couldn't understand 95% of the dialogue. The reactions from the club members were priceless ^_^

That was like OP song obu zee year... I didn't want to see anything past that since I'm waiting for fansub.
Wow, I can't believe I ended up watching this, but I saw BluWacky's blogging on it and he said it was hilarious and unexpected (or something to that effect) - so I thought, why not just get the damn thing.
Gosh, did this air on April Fool's? IT would have fit the theme perfectly!
I am so surprised by the way they REALLY got the shitty-amateur-video thing across, it had me laughing throughout! A loooong time since a moe show has made me laugh... The lousy acting, the forgetting of lines, the teachers (that was hilarious!), the cat that almost fell off (I LOVE that cat, I can't wait to see more of it  ), and... the reeeeheeaallly bad special effects
One of my favourite bits was the whole segment when Yuki was going to do something to Itsuki and then Mikuru appears and bumps into the pillar.... and then Yuki goes off, and while she's going off someone's closing a car door - that was brilliant! It really felt quite funny.
It's really great how they actually showed this in the anime, I haven't read the book but I actually want to watch at least one more episode to see wth this is about (and the general outline seems not bad, at least it's not harem... I hope)
Which is a great achievement, when's the last time I've enjoyed this type of show?!
And kj1980's right about how other sakuga studios should learn a bit from Kyoto - especially J.C. Staff! Look how much better the same illustrator's designs look here compared to Shana (well, I think they look much better-drawn here)
It may not be innovative animation ala Studio 4C and Satelight, but the key is that the animators seem to care about what they're doing and really put in effort to make it look like it should... GJ staff.
EDIT: Oh yeah, I liked the narration - halfway through: "Th-wait, you mean there's still another half to this?!" and earlier "Normally he'd call an ambulance or ask a bystander for help, but this young man is instead carrying this unconscious girl away like a princess in his arms, where does he think he's taking her, the bastard." :heh:
I also really liked the bit where Mikuru's classmates acted as zombies... "Sorry, Mikuru, but we've been, uh, kind of zombified, so..."
I don't know how much longer I'll watch it as I think at some point I'll start demanding more reality (I wonder if real high school students in Japan would do this... well, I wouldn't know), but hey, I stuck through all of Air, I'm sure I can stick through this... if its done well.
I trust his opinion, but I'd like to know your opinion about the manga, because if it is a manga adaptation then....

Hello first of all! I'm new on this forums, and well, I hope I can contribute to it in a nice way.
Anyway, I never read any of the novels/manga from Suzumiya Haruhi, and yet, my antecipation level was HIGH. I Guess it was because KyoAni was going to do it, and well, at least for me, it's the best animation studio ever.
Anyhow, picked up the first episode yesterday by night, and my expectations were huge, almost reaching heaven or something like that, and what do I have to say? It was even better than I thought it would be!
There's just one word to describe this episode: AWESOME.
The "crappy" animation and weird angle shots were brilliant. Took me sometime to realize they were doing a movie, but it's just so funny, and what about that "Opening" song we got? I suppose it was Haruhi's Seiyuu Singing? If it was, it was so damn nice, she was all nervous and the song was sung in such a comic way. Then we got all those Sailor Moon or whatever those were stances, and the super special effects from the mighty Wand. Those Yellow Rays and the Laser Beams out of Miruku's eyes were superb. I was rolling around laughing by that time. Comedy-wise, this was one of the most incredible episodes I ever saw.
Oh, and about the sound, that "GBA-Type" of Music was such a nice touch, no wonder they got lots of musics like that, as it seems the Composer for the series was involved with Konami for some time.
And talking about music, the ED was alright. The song itself isn't any masterpiece, but it sure fits the moment, and the spirit of the series, but the video was awesome. Dancing Haruhi is MOE. Anyone got Gifs from their dances? That would be greatly appreciated!
But...well, I don't even know what to say anymore... I loved every minute of this, and I'm sure looking forward for the next episode, and of course, for someone to sub it too, as I think it's not licensed (yet?)

At first I thought: "Hell no, I'm not watching this crap, I have too little time for yet another comedy".
Then I saw BluWacky's writeup and though: "OK, this sounds weird, maybe I'll follow it on fansubs".
But then I gave in and watched it anyway. OMFG! This is so bizzare!!! From the abysmaly bad magical girl indy film to the hyperactive title character to the incredibly awesome ending... this show is the sleeper hit for me.
Never expected this level of crack from a totally obscure show.

The "opening" song is called "Koi no Mikuru Densetsu", written and composed by Suzumiya Haruhi, sung by Asahina Mikuru (Goto Yuuko).
Haruhi's seiyuu, Hirano Aya, sings the real opening, "Bouken-deshou-deshou", starting next episode.
Never expected this level of crack from a totally obscure show.
Well, as Kyoto Animation's newest release, there's actually quite a bit of attention on it, so I wouldn't call it obscure.
Too bad the first episode had to be so "first-time-watcher unfriendly" though. ^^;

I didn't really read the novels, just a bit info here and there, and knew this would be bizarre, crazy, and yet, lots of fun. It's not that unfriendly as people has been saying, maybe most of them were waiting for something more serious? I don't know :p
Oh about the Op, there was an interview with Haruhi's seiyuu that a friend of mine downloaded yesterday, while he was searching for the Episode on Share. Anyone knows if it's confirmed that the BGM from that interview is indeed, the Opening for Haruhi? It seemed like she was the one singing it :p

People who know nothing about the series wouldn't know that this is a movie made for the school cultural fair by the SOS-dan members in the story (sort of a show-in-a-show). They see the craptastic visuals and scripting (thanks to our Super Director Haruhi) and some would misunderstand it as the actual anime, and turns the channel / stops watching, while others would be left clueness until the last moment.
That's what I meant by "first-timer-watcher unfriendly".

Go to the radio site: http://lantis-net.com/haruhi/radio.html
Check out the 5th meeting (dated 2006/3/3), you can hear the OP and ED there (OP comes in at about halfway, ED comes in near the end).
By the way, no one has yet mentioned that three seiyuus from "SHUFFLE!" are in "Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu."
Kyon: Sugita Tomokazu (played Rin in "SHUFFLE!")
Asahina Mikuru: Gotou Yuuko (played Kaede in "SHUFFLE!")
Kyon's little sister: Aoki Sayaka (played Lisianthus in "SHUFFLE!")
The "opening" song is called "Koi no Mikuru Densetsu", written and composed by Suzumiya Haruhi, sung by Asahina Mikuru (Goto Yuuko).
And somehow Mikuru's off-key singing is addictive ww
I've ported the episode onto my iPod and found myself repeating the OP of "Asahina Mikuru no Bouken Ep. 00" as I commuted today.
Never expected this level of crack from a totally obscure show.
I wouldn't say that this show was "obscure." There was high anticipation since last year when Kyo-Ani stated that it will be doing this.

Yes. I wonder how many foreign fans will pass up this show by looking at this episode without learning that they were watching the SOS-dan amateur-video. However, the quality of the sakuga is still the trademark Kyo-Ani quality so I'm hoping that people will hang on to at least another episode.

However, the quality of the sakuga is still the trademark Kyo-Ani quality so I'm hoping that people will hang on to at least another episode. I didn't know it was going to be a movie-within-an-anime, but I read the titles as they went by and it became clear. I did know what the SOS was, though, and basically who Haruhi was, so that probably helped. Any fansub has to find a way to translate those titles that allows people to get it right away.
What I don't get is people talking about low-quality animation. All they did was a few odd camera-angles and jokes. Otherwise, it was fabulous animation all the way through, wasn't it?
I'm slightly afraid that they won't be able to keep up this stellar level of humor when a real story has to be told, but I have confidence in the people doing it, based on this first episode, so I expect they'll manage.

The whole Ahahina Mikuru thing was so atrociously bad that it was impossible to believe it was the real thing. I mean, they even made the picture quality so bad-looking (compared to the last scene) that it was clear that they are lampooning indy films.

No, the quality was actually artificially degraded in the "main part". It was glaringly obvious if you compare it to the ending or the shots of the school that appeared after the "credits".

Neither do I. Perhaps they are talking about the graininess to show the effect that it was shot through a DV camcorder? That doesn't really mean the sakuga quality. I thought that it was high as with any other Kyo-Ani productions. Even though the shitty-amateur video was indeed very bad, the fluidity of Yuki's magician's robe in the wind, Itsuki's hand gestures and body language, background movements - you can tell that these were very high at the genga level.

The cat talked. But I didn't get whether that was conceptual (i.e. part of Haruhi's film), or just some freak talking cat.
Some have even speculated that it's part of Haruhi's magical power (real life), but I didn't really get that, it was so bizzare from start to finish.

I had exactly the same confusion about the cat, but I think... ...it really talked. It's part of Haruhi's ability to alter reality (unconsciously). The "witch" stopped it by tapping it with her wand, which may have worked only because of Haruhi's power. I'm excited to find out.I wouldn't be at all surprised to see the cat keep turning up in various weird situations. At least I hope it does.

Yes, when I said "craptastic visuals", I was referring to the image quality rather than the animation quality. It's quite obvious they made the picture grainy and faded out the colors on purpose when you compare it to the "real anime" at the end. The problem would be with those people who weren't patient enough to watch until the end.
If anyone has a minute and can answer this: Does the cat talk? Is it a talking cat or did I just hear things wrong? Thanks.
The cat's name is Shamisen (given by Haruhi). As for the talking thing:
Yes, he can talk (caused by our almighty Haruhi). Currently kept by Kyon. Kyon's little sister (the little girl in the episode) plays with him a lot.

Does the cat talk? Is it a talking cat or did I just hear things wrong?
Yes the cat talked.
If you are hoping for more, however, you will be disappointed...
Haruhi is god, literally.
She damands/wants/desires the cat to speak so that she can have a talking cat for the witch(Yuki), so it does; Haruhi doesn't know that she has the power though. And it is up to her four subordinates to keep her happy in case she becomes depress enough to want the world to end- which it almost did. XD
Basically the movie contains more truth than you may have thought. For example, Yuki is really an alien. Mikuru really is from the future. etc. etc. One of the mystery (sort of) in the story is that did Haruhi created the characters because she wants them to be aliens/people from the future/espers?
Manga first- Thank GOD they remade the manga. I read it a few days ago and I am happy to say the characters finally look right. The major differences between the 2nd manga and the novel is how Kyon gets to know Haruhi and the order of character introduction.
Anime second- I don't know. I read the story; I think they should have made it more "first-time-viewer-friendly". I sort of got bored halfway through the episode ^_^;; .
The ending scene made it all up though XD The look on the characters' faces is priceless.
And I think the narrator(Kyon) should shut up if he doesn't want to get punch XD
And I think the narrator(Kyon) should shut up if he doesn't want to get punch XD
Are you crazy? The monologues from Kyon is one the best parts of the novel. I think this episode wouldn't have been half as funny as it were without Kyon's constant tsukkomis. I would LOVE it if they would keep Kyon's internal dialogues intact throughout the rest of the series.
Thanks Woland! A Friend just found this on 2chan, shame it's low quality.

It's a joke XD. Actually the narration was what pulled me though the episode.
Anyway I was always wondering how is the production team going to handle the main character's monologues since the monologues are what hold the story together.
You never get to see nor hear his real name.
This is good stuff. It takes a genius team to pull of a good indie parody.
All the bad effects are purposefully done. But when you look at the actual animation quality....note this means keyframes, not just backgrounds...it is godly. I mean, just the girls dancing on the end, omg wow.
Off-topic: How did KyoAni come about? They're a new studio who started only with Munto OVA. How come they can beat the old studios like Tatsunoko and JC Staff?
Actually Kyoto Animation has been around before that, as a contract studio... sort of, from what I remember it first started out as a contract painting studio started by Yoko Hatta, and it expanded from there. I remember their art department did some backgrounds for Turn-A Gundam, and they have done some entire episodes of Inuyasha.
It's essentially self-sufficient, it has all the departments in one place (animation, finishing, composition, 3D, background art...), and they never seem to depend on other studios besides Animation Do (which is their sister studio or studio 2 or something like that anyway) and AniVillage (usually in-between animation, rarely key animation). Perhaps mostly because they're in Kyoto so it's just cheaper and easier for them to do it all in-house, as most of the anime stuff is in Tokyo iirc...
And I guess they're just that good because the staff members feel very united or something. From what I read about them, they're a pretty cheerful bunch and they'll do things because they like it, rather than just seeing it as a job (Although I really cannot attest to the truth of these statements.)
They actually organise animation classes, for amateurs as well as for pros (the pros end up joining Kyoto Animation, if you go look on their page you will see some of the names there are in Air and so on...) They have a similar course for background art as well. They have amateur classes in design and manga stuff as well.
You just get studios like that sometimes... although it's also possible that they've just been really lucky/smart with the production scheduling so that you don't have rush-jobs like other anime.
Now I just wish Kyoto Animation would do something out of the mainstream, I'd like to see what they could accomplish.
Thanks wao that was very informative. I think being located in Kyoto serves to weed out some competition so that they can actually charge higher for their services and hence maintain their quality. Also like you said with everything being in-house, and with training classes to boot. Generally when the animation studio fosters a unified culture, the artists tend to be loyal and have more incentive to do great work. If not, then they might as well be snatched by the next studio offering higher compensation package. However making artists in-house requires more investment than in keeping them on contractual basis. That's one of the issues my studio is currently tackling.
I'm pretty sure KyoAni will go mainstream one of these days...they probably need to rack up more DVD sales from fanboys before they can get the bigger sponsors.
Well, I don't know how it really works out, but I imagine they're pretty much the only studio in Kyoto so if you're in Kyoto Animation and you've lived in Kyoto most of your life... you can't just up and go to another studio unless you move to Tokyo.
Whereas in Tokyo if you get pissed off with the studio and so on you could join one of the numerous other studios in that area.
At least that's what I imagine it to be, anyway...
It seems like they don't utilize any freelance animators either (then again most of them are probably in Tokyo anyway so it's no point unless you specifically want one particular animator's...)
KyoAni's definitely not the only studio with the seniors teaching the juniors though, they do it at Production I.G. and other places too. But AFAIK it's the only one that actually offers animation courses for anyone to join.
They even accepted a girl from New York (I think she's ethnically Japanese - they called her Kyoko, anyway) who applied to do a short internship there as part of her college/university studies (I can't remember which - there's an article on it on AnimationWorld or some online animation mag, just google it).
I almost want to go there myself but... for now maybe I'll try staying on topic :heh:
edit: and they're quite well known by fans I believe, that's why they've even got Kanon lined up already and so on... I don't think they'll have any problems.
I did not get the first episode at all. But hey, it has godly animation qualities, and should hold me off until Kanon 2006 comes out.

Just a little info on Shamisen, the talking cat:
It is a male calico cat. If you are a feline lover, you know that is a rareity in itself.
It is named Shamisen out of a very bad pun www
Shamisen is a traditional Japanese music instrument which is played like a guitar. The strings are made out of feline guts. Hence, the cat is named "shamisen." It's kinda sad, really www

Theories abound on why a male cat can have female colouration [3 colours].
1 they have and extra X chromosome. so they are biologically male but genetically female [rare]
2 They are chimaera or developed from a fused pair of fetuses [damned rare] >_<

I'm gleefully jumping on the bandwagon. In fact, I'm kind of gleeful that there is such a big bandwagon to jump on. It was an incredibly bold move to start a series off like this, and a lot of people find bold moves off-putting. The opening made me laugh out loud twice -- which is unusual. I chuckle a lot, but I don't laugh out loud very often. Between the "camera work," the color saturation, and the narrator's running commentary, I suspected a film within a film. I didn't expect them to keep it up for almost the entire first episode. That took guts.

As for a story plot, I'll translate the synopsis for the novel's first volume for you:
"I am not interested in mere human beings. If any one of you in here is an alien, from the future, or has superpowers, come see me. That's all." Right from the beginning at the new school, Suzumiya Haruhi tossed out an outrageous greeting. It's not as if this is a sci-fi novel or anything......that's probably what everyone thought. That's what I thought too. But Haruhi was serious from the bottom of her heart. By the time I realized that, my normal daily life has already become the abnormal--------.

I'll echo nearly everyone else so far in saying this was just BRILLIANT. Though I was spoiled about the film-within-a-film conceit (4chan lol), I think any viewer watching this would pick up on it fairly soon. If the opening doesn't tip you off, then at least very quickly it should be obvious - my god, the song was SO BAD. The false bad production values cleverly conceal ridiculously high ones, though - even the song was done REALLY WELL. Also, anybody else notice the feedback tone at the beginning? The way they imitated bad production values is brilliant in itself (I'm pretty sure the tone was on purpose...).
Honestly, if you got scared off by the first episode you shouldn't watch this show. This was comedic genius. The jokes were all WAY overdone, but hilariously so.
As for the characters... It seems Mikuru is a wimp and ditz in real life. Yuki is one of those "silent but weird" types that seem to be more popular lately (a definite contrast with the earlier Rei type of silent, passive girls). Itsuki is still a mystery as far as I can tell. I think Kyon likes Mikuru - he's way too jealous of Itsuki. As for Haruhi, she instantly reminded me of Tomo from Azumanga Daioh.
I didn't really notice anything weird was up until the cat talked, but after watching again the eyebeam thing seemed to have actually worked for real the first time, accidentally striking down our cameraman...
Even if the rest of the episodes are only half as good this series will be far above average. If they are close to the quality of this first episode this will be a true classic.
That's weird, aren't her "friends" in the SOS Club all humans? :uhoh:
:innocent:
Just wait for some more episodes and you will find out
Well, it was fun, I hope it turns out to be a good show.
Yuki (or whatsherrealname) FTW
Loli power :D
I just LOVE the ending theme of the show and how smooth they animated the characters in the dance sequence of it.

NEXT EPISODE! NEXT EPISODE!
I just LOVE the ending theme of the show and how smooth they animated the characters in the dance sequence of it.
Hee. I know I've done little else but squee at the dance sequence in the ending, but it's just so awesome. I could watch it over and over again.
Brilliant! Absolutely brilliant!
There were many moments that made me laugh out loud. The AK47 scene was perhaps the funniest of them all in my opinion. :heh:
Best OP ever. I wish they'd keep it for all the episodes ;_; The lyrics are just priceless. Beam attack!
That was by Yuko Goto, right? Who would have thought she could do something like that... :eyebrow:
About the episode itself, there isn't much more to be said, easily the most hilarious show out of all the ones currently starting. They really handled all the bad filming points really well imo (especially the time when Mikuru stands still with the man who told her she was working hard, a bike just had to pass by at that moment), and the mikuru beam has the best animation ever made. I'm really hoping the following episodes will keep an equal funny factor.

Now THIS is what I call good comedy anime.
I do not understand for the life of me how School Rumble could be considered funny, but then again, there are different senses of humours.
I found the comedy very refreshing. I've never really found anime funny, and only the ones which have taken a slightly different approach than norm, such as Hale Nochi Guu and Magikano, have made me literally LOL.
This was great because it wasn't crazy or fast paced, but you had to observe closely to catch the humour, like as someone said
the cat falling off the shoulder
and when the witch girl appeared at the window, and one foot was inside the house and the other was obviously on another platform, even though the girl was supposed to be in the air
Ah, I love this series.
Btw, the blue haired girl in the preview reminded me of Kanna from AIR, lol.
what so good about the first episode is that when you rewatch the episode after knowing the ending get you more laughters =D
Yeah the second time is even more hilarious! I'm getting too excited now. Somehow the premise works like a charm having us watch Haruhi's skewed idea of a movie through the scrutinizing eyes of Kyon (the actual film doesn't include Kyon's voiceover correct?). I can imagine how boring it will be if I'm a student watching the film at the cultural festival without Kyon's monologue, though if I'm attentive enough, I guess there's half a chance that I might recognize and enjoy it as it is... a parody of bloopers, fanservice, overused cliches and nonsensical plot devices! :heh:
Scenes like Mikuru stuffing the envelope between her breasts for no reason other than for fanservice, Mikuru's running bouncing 'loop' also for fanservice, the cat falling off Yuki's shoulder, Tsuruya burst out laughing at the cheesy dialogues, Itsuki carrying Mikuru off like a princess whereas Yuki and others 'disappeared' etc... they are all so amusing to watch. The parodies are so blatant and contrived but the effect comes out as totally refreshing and ingenious if you know what I mean. :heh:
Mikuru is another winner, who needs ass kicking mahou shoujos/ battle maids/ waitress when the clumsy version is ten times better. Gotou Yuuko's voice as Mikuru is moe~!
PS: The ED dance sequence rocks! Now if there's an enlarged version...
This was easily the most hilarious episode of anime I've seen in a while, but Im a bit sceptical as to whether the rest of the series can live up to the awesomeness of the first episode, time will tell I guess.

Yeah, the ED dance sequence is cool. What annoyed me though is not just the fact that the size was small, it's also the fact that the dancing was only in short bursts, i.e. it kept on getting interupted by the other clips =(

Yeah, I wonder what the comedy in the actual series is like, as opposed to the first episode.

Kyon's hard hitting tsukkomis are what I remember the most. Oh, that and watching Mikuru-chan get abused in every possible way by Haruhi. :heh:
Besides the comedy though, there are other memorable scenes too. The ____ scene between Haruhi and Kyon in the lockdown dimension at the end of volume 1 was like "kya~~>ヮ<". For a tsundere, Haruhi's dere comes only once in a blue moon, but that's what makes it so good. So Kyoani, don't screw that scene up.

The surprise of the season so far for me. I knew very little about it beforehand(still don't know all that much after the first episode) and I wasn't even sure if I'd be following it, it was on my "maybe" list. Definitely going to keep up with it now though, that first episode was just brilliant. All the little touches that you notice and start laughing at(e.g. the cat, witch supposedly flying out of the window and you can still see her hat popping up, some of the "actors" bursting out in fits of laughter in certain scenes, etc...), and then you have the commentary which is just the icing on the cake. One of the best first episodes I've seen really in terms of entertainment, comedy and getting me hooked on a series.
Voice acting was top notch as well, especially Goto Yuuko(sp?) as Mikuru, who's just awesome and amazingly cute.
I'm laughing just recounting some of the scenes :D , always a good sign when it comes to comedy.

I liked how Mikuru stuffed the pay envelope into her top, then bowed and bumped her face on it. I also liked the continuity f-up when you see her start running with the envelope there, then it's gone, then it's back again.

I(we) NEED the monologue for that scene! Please production team, don't skip the monologues (especially that scene)...
"No! NO!!! Why ME!!! I object! I object!!! Ahhhhggg...."
And then Kyon ______ Haruhi....
hehehe indeed, one of the favourite scenes in the story XD
We never knew Kyon had it in him muhahaha
Anyway there are a few things that I didn't expect in episode 1.
Those product placements. I knew there are a few, but I never imagined them to be that blatant. They bring smiles to my face :^D.
And the "A Suzumiya Haruhi film" at the beginning- indeed.
Too bad we didn't see Yuki ___ Mikuru in the battle scene, and we didn't see the hidden parts during the filming, namely
How Kyon almost die (real life) in the battle scene.
I liked how Mikuru stuffed the pay envelope into her top, then bowed and bumped her face on it.
Heh, I thought that she snooze in the half way, and then, repeated the ~shitsureishimasu~ sentence.
That was cute.
Very unique 1st episode.
Definitely another show I'll be catching. :)

I believe that any anime that has Daisuke Ono is a must watch, what after his amazing work as Yukito in Air.. anyway..
I'll have to admit i wouldn't have enjoyed it as much if i didn't know it was a movie recording, though i believe you can tell that just by the OP for the movie.
Its been said a lot of times already in the thread, but it really was funny stuff, mainly thanks to the Narrator Kyon (Tomokazu Sugita).. yes, its great to hear Rin again.
I'm looking forward to where this show can go, and also for the OP/ED/OST! =D
Now, I may be out of the loop, but is the purpose of this show to be as stereotypically bad as it can possibly be in a parody way? Because that's what it seems like to me. It was pretty funny though, in an awful way :P.

Totally. It reminds me of the videos me and my crackhead friends used to produce for our Spanish class.
The best one was where we were using an inflatable raft and one of the guys decided to take the cap keeping the air inside of it off.
Suffice to say, someone ended up very wet and very seaweed covered.

The way I see it, it was more of a "ugh... this is original... uh, I mean, I can't believe I have to do this..." thing.

It was either that, or certain destruction.
Haruhi: "What is it......"
Kyon: "You know, I'm actually moe for ponytails"

Kyon: "That ponytail you had before suited you so much it was almost against the rules, really"
Haruhi: "Are you an idiot?"

Are there scanlations/translated manga available for purchase? I saw some links to the Japanese books earlier in the thread, but those wouldn't do me any good.
o.. my... god... this was funny.
If the ending credits dance animation is ANY indication of the animation quality of the "real life" episodes (outside of the silly highschool filmmaking that skewered so much anime) -- I'm in... even if the plot sucks 14 day old eggs left in the sun.
But I don't think it will...
boy that brought back memories of my high school German language class movie project ... we did a parody (3 stooges style) of the Third Reich giving a "everything is a-ok" news conference as Allied tanks were roaring by in the background and bombs dropped on us.

This first episode ranks right up there with Pani Poni Dash in terms of randomness!
Nevertheless, it's quite well done, even if it wiped out half my brain in the process. I am looking forward to the second episode.
And yeah, the dance animation at the end was really good. I do think they used some sort of 2D motion tracing technique. The animation is so fluid!
The ending animation felt more like tons of smooth in-betweens with somewhat detailed movement, more than motiontracing (rotoscoping?). They did a good job making sure the face moves slowly while the character does a motion so that it looks more eye-catching. But rotoscoped things have a bit more movement, than that, I think (you'd see the hair and stuff move a bit more).
But I'm not an animator or anything like that so I can't really say for sure...

So it seems like no motion capture or 3D techniques were used at all, they really did draw all that manually. What tyranny, Kyoani (praise).

But rotoscoped things have a bit more movement, than that, I think (you'd see the hair and stuff move a bit more).
Actually rotoscoped animation in general tend to look unnatural, which is not the case here. The smoothest movements are just done with more keys and in-betweens and are exaggerated forms of natural movements, rather than direct traces of them. Unlike 3D and mocap, with 2D many are prepared to tar and feather anyone who even suggests of rotoscoping. (but that didn't stop even Disney from doing it).
Of course, I'd need a bigger view of the dance sequence to tell for certainty...but I also think they might have purposefully shrunk the dance sequence because they couldn't feasibly draw as much detail and still make the motion seem realistic.
boy that brought back memories of my high school German language class movie project ... we did a parody (3 stooges style) of the Third Reich giving a "everything is a-ok" news conference as Allied tanks were roaring by in the background and bombs dropped on us.
Yeah it reminded me too of my group german film project. We did Godzilla, complete with legos and puppets.
I guess that's why the dance sequence isn't that long and the movements aren't that complicated - so that they could make it very smooth and get the timing exactly right.

This may look on the surface like a bad student video project, but in fact, you know, it isn't. It intentionally reproduces the kinds of things that might happen in a bad student video, but it could only have been made by top professionals. Every frame is esthetically beautiful, and the visual timing, to say nothing of the comic timing, is superb.
And I for one am eager to see a serious side to the anime. In fact, the comedy is so perfect that I already see a serious underpinning. The beautiful enthusiasm of Haruhi in the face of this disaster is quite moving, as are Mikuru's hard work and serious intentions, and the powerless embarrassment of the members of the SOS. For me, this episode was able to touch something deep with its inspired silliness.
Fanboy enthusiasm, I know, but that's how I feel.
As for the animation of the rest of the series, I think we do see bits of what it's going to be like in the scenes of screening the film for the SOS club, and in the shot of the outside of the school. It's going to be great, but not as amazing as the dance sequence, which is a special deal for the ED.

I'm a little late coming to the party, but the hype convinced me to check out ep 1. And holy crap! That was brilliant!
It's satirical comedy that actually shows a good amount of subtlety... but it was hilarious and an extremely clever parady of anime. I was continuously lol'ing for the entire first half of the episode. Add in KyoAn's gorgeous animation, and this looks very much like a hit.
Very much looking forward to the next episodes because the glimpse of Suzumiya we got makes her seem like she's a real character. And considering the quality (and cleverness) of humour we saw from the first episode, I think it's fair to have high expectations for this one, no matter what road it goes down (eg, if it decides to be a character analysis of the main character, or just a high school comedy ala School Rumble).

I really didn't expect anything when I watched this. Right when the video started I noticed that this was going to be some sort of parody/homemade video. I thought "I bet some character is watching a video" but it kept going and going and I couldn't stop laughing at the quality of the direction. Like when Koizumi is holding the white paper thing and is in the shot or the craptastic final battle effects. It's genius-quality work on many levels, I can't wait for the future episodes!

To be a little more accurate, tsundere means a character (usually girl) who acts cold or demeaning (the "tsun" part) (or in western terms, like a bitch) towards the main character (the guy) at first, but over time begins to show her soft and gentle side (the "dere" part) to the main character as their relationship deepens.
Most of the time, whenever you see a potential love interest for the main character who's cold or mean towards him in the beginning, she can probably be classified as a tsundere, since it's almost certain that her "dere" part will show at some point.
...Well, most of the time. Haruhi is... eh... :heh:

You got model gundam toy things dancing like they do in the ending (the trick is done with stop animation (that's what the process is called if I recall corectly))

Episode 2 aired already and as expected it goes back to the beginning. While I can't comment on novel, it followed the second manga and only changed small bits. The real opening is a feast for the eyes, even more so than the ending already way, and the song, sung by Haruhi (Aya Hirano) is quite good as well. Animation is godly, light years from any other current series away. Kyons monologues are simply great and make a lot out of the show. There's nothing I could complain about so far. Need more episodes, now. :)
Haruhi's different hairstyles are a win by the way. ;)
I wonder what everyone's favourite scenes are. I would probably go for...
The one where Haruhi finally finds out what bukatsu she should do, drags him from behind so that he bangs the head on the table and afterwards Kyon goes, "ok, I've got it, now if you would calm down" slowly turns around "we're still in class". Everbody's looking bewildered at them. Hillarious!
Also funny the scene where he tries Yuki to disagree with Haruhi's idea and she doesn't care at all. The Mikuru boobgrab scene and all the stuff around rocked as well. "Moe! Moe!!"
Thumbs (http://img435.imageshack.us/img435/4714/suzumiyaharuhinoyuuutsuepisode.jpg) for episode 02.

Kyoto Animation. The production studio that is known for high quality sakuga production values. The same people who brought to us "Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu," "AIR," and "Full Metal Panic! the second raid."

Episode 02 Screencaps (http://randomc.animeblogger.net/2006/04/09/suzumiya-haruhi-no-yuuutsu-02/)
That was hilarious; humor and Kyoto Animation quality make me very happy. Haruhi's explanation of moe was particularly funny, and Sugita Tomokazu continues to do a great job voicing Kyon and narrating. I wasn't completely sure about the direction of this series from last week and whether I'd follow it, but I am now. Two thumbs up, way way up.

Brief summary, Screencaps, and OP/ED theme (http://www.designchronicle.com/memento/archives/suzumiya_haruhi_no_yuuutsu_ep2.html)
For those who want the bigger version of the Ending theme, I got it on the link above. I also think this episode is awesome. It's funny and actually contains some interesting plot. I was especially amused at the way poor Asahina Mikuru gets dragged into SOS.
... and here I was beginning to think it was going to be a quiet spring before the summer. Entertaining stuff and excellent art/animation here.
Wow, they enlarged the ED's dance sequence. :D Can't wait to see episode 2. So is there really a hint of a plot in episode 2? Just wondering where it will go.
They kept Kyon's monologues, THANK YOU GOD (KYOANI)!!
On top of that, they even kept that unique thing where the Haruhi would reply to Kyon's comments/tsukkomis even though he didn't actually say them out loud (many of the off screen lines from Kyon were not spoken lines).
Oh, and the appearance of CompAce and Comptiq... I have both of those issues and it cracked me up.
The "3 weird things about Haruhi" section was brilliantly done too, I really loved how they handled the hairstyle part. ^^
The episode ended with the announcement of the creation of SOS-dan, which is a good place to cut off.
Oh, for the next episode preview:

Mikuru-chan's first sacrifice for SOS-dan, just thinking about it now is making me laugh. Goto Yuuko's voice is too incredible :heh:

Hmmm, I think the novels are done by Noiji Ito, who did Shakugan no Shana. (looking at the character designs of the novels and the way the eyes are drawn and such) (no, I haven't checked yet, so don't blame me if it has already been pointed out :p )
If so, this series will probably be the roxorz series of the season. :D SnS was awesome, and seeing another of Ito's novels animated will be a dream. :D This series is already doing excellent without knowing who made it. :D

Itou Noizi is indeed the illustrator for both light novels, but she's not the author. Suzumiya Haruhi series' author is Tanigawa Nagaru. Shakugan no Shana series' author is Takahashi Yashichirou.

Oh lawd, SOS Dan strikes again. 8)
This show never fails to impress. I am amazed at how much movement they've managed to stick into practically every scene. At first it's just a regular people walking and talking, but then Kyon starts getting into arguments with Haruhi and they manage to show an ungodly amount of mimic and facial expression, but when Haruhi finally starts SOS Dan, why it goes above and beyond the call of duty. Every single frame has something moving.
I am afraid to learn how many key animation shots they used for a single episode.
The montage work is first grade as well. This gets especially apparent in those scenes with Kyon and Haruhi where KyoAni does a constant switching between those two to produce a very startling effect. We never pause on any of their faces but their expessions change every time, producing an amazing scope of emotion from both character.
Wow... just wow!
And the music is so fitting as well (I mean the BGM). And I always feel so weird looking at Haruhi's eyes. The way they've drawn them... you know, it was as if they've used this semitransparent multilayered glass effect to show different hues and colors. I can believe those eyes were actually drawn, not rendered, they look so alive and real (while staying in the anime convention).
Oh, and poor Mikuru... and poor everyone that gets in Haruhi's way when she sets her mind on something. And the hilarity of the "moe scene" and Kyon thinking about what day of the week it is based on Haruhi's haircut. 8)))
The full-frame ending was even better than before. 8)

Yeah, I really liked the violin piece in the scene when Mikuru was first introduced. And on a few other occassions some nice pieces as well. Gotta agree on the eyes as well, just beautiful. :)

Hirano Aya (http://hashihime.atspace.com/Hashi_seiyuusC.html#hiranaya) (Haruhi's voice actress) just became an anime goddess. The smoothness of her stridency is amazing.
This show is at a very high level. Subtle and amazing all round.
Great animation:
-- Kyon dancing away from his bike in the opening credits.
-- When Kyon was leaning out the window watching Haruhi at the pool, the way they rocked the camera slightly to represent his body moving. The water. The way Haruhi walked out of the frame while they held the shot instead of following her. The way Kyon leaned out further to watch her walk around the building.
-- The scene at the top of the stairs, and Haruhi running down them.
Other favorite moments:
-- Haruhi going "hmph" at the end of her first conversation with Kyon.
-- The lovely sad look on the girl's face as she ushered the boys out of the room after Haruhi did her thing in class.
-- The way Kyon talked over the last bit of what Haruhi was saying when they were sitting before class, before Itsuki asked Kyon how he got her to talk.
-- The way Mikuru (Gotou Yuuko (http://hashihime.atspace.com/Hashi_seiyuus.html#gotouyuuko)) asked what the room was. Haruhi locking the door. Haruhi's dry: "Please be quiet." Mikuru's squeaks.
Kyon is a cool guy. No wimpy harem lead. Big kudos to Sugita Tomokazu (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=910) (Mayama in Honey&Clover, etc.).
The three girls together on the ED are great.
I don't think Haruhi is really tsundere, is she? At least not yet. It's tsun, tsun, tsun and then a flamethrower of joy. No dere there at all.
I don't think there's anything in this post that needs a spoiler. Let me know if there is.
Maids! Maids! Maids!

The look of anguish and fear on her face. The tears forever welling up in her eyes. It's almost to good to be true. :)

can someone tell me why the girl jumped on Mikiru in the middle of the first battle?
Because of the Mikuru Beam, Mikuru used before. You see that her eye turned blue and afterwards that flash when she releases it. After the camera pans out in the sky, Yuki jumps on her and shuts her eyes with her hand while Kyon explains all the stuff about that final attack. Haruhi once again released her powers in this scene and they tried to hide that.
can someone tell me why Yuki jumped on Mikiru in the middle of the first battle?
It'll be explained later when they do the episode of the SOSdan actually making the film.

-- The lovely sad look on the girl's face as she ushered the boys out of the room after Haruhi did her thing in class.
Asakura Ryouko is her name. She's an... interesting one.
-- The way Kyon talked over the last bit of what Haruhi was saying when they were sitting before class, before Itsuki asked Kyon how he got her to talk.
That's not Itsuki, his name is Taniguchi, who went to the same middle school as Haruhi.
I don't think Haruhi is really tsundere, is she? At least not yet. It's tsun, tsun, tsun and then a flamethrower of joy. No dere there at all.
That's why I didn't put her straight down as one. Even after all these novel volumes, I have yet to see a dere Haruhi. I can stretch a few to look like she's semi-dere-ing, but that's about it.
But that's okay, Mikuru-chan and Haruhi balances each other out perfectly anyway. I can't wait for the "computer aquisition" scene in the next episode. ^^

I'm just curious if there is any kind of romantic entanglement between the characters? I got the impression that Kyon likes Mikuru. Who actually likes who in this series?
It's tsun, tsun, tsun and then a flamethrower of joy.Thats a great choice of words :D
I can stretch a few to look like she's semi-dere-ing, but that's about it.Does that include Haruhi cutting her hair after Kyon commenting on her hairstyle(s)?
Man, after watching the 1st ep I was counting the days until the 2nd ep... now I'll have to count the days until the 3rd. :heh: I'm even considering getting my hands on the novels... for those who have read them how closely does it seem to be following the novels so far? (yes I know "Episode 00" only comes later in the novels)
Does that include Haruhi cutting her hair after Kyon commenting on her hairstyle(s)?
No, but that was the first sign that Haruhi might actually care about Kyon's comments.
for those who have read them how closely does it seem to be following the novels so far? (yes I know "Episode 00" only comes later in the novels)
Almost to a tee. Almost all the lines were taken straight out from the novel. In fact, this episode was pretty much the first 66 pages (out of 300 pages) of volume 1 in animated form. Mikuru-chan's anime counterpart is 100x better than what my brain was able to imagine from the novel though. ^^ That's why it feels extra great to watch this.
Oh yeah, something like this popped up:

I'm just curious if there is any kind of romantic entanglement between the characters?
There's definitely hints that that may be where the show might head.
..Though personally, I'd rather they not spend too much time on it -- it probably would pull away from the the show's happy-go-lucky feel.
So would you say so far the execution of the anime amplifies the hilarity of the novels?
Amplify? Hmm, I dunno, the jokes are the same, so I can't really say which is "more hilarious" or anything (hilarious enough). But it's true that the anime really reproduced all those scenes from the novel excellently, and from the perspective of us novel readers, it's simply a joy to see the words from the novel brought to life as an animation, especially when it has captured everything so well: from the character traits to the atmosphere to even the minor details that first time anime-watchers may not even realize/notice, but score bit points with the novel-readers. (For example: that Tanabata(七夕) scene at the beginning of the OP)

Wow, ep2 was much more captivating.
ep1 was hilarious, mainly for its novelty. The mst2000 format of making jokes over a B movies does get old however, so if that was going to be the whole show I was worried.
But instead it was just a taste of the adventures that the SOS-dan would have.
I think Haruhi has an awesome personality.
Watching the fullscreen dance ED, I just noticed that Itsuki seems far, far more enthusiastic about the whole thing than Kyon.

Not really. Mikuru joined the SOSdan not because she fell in love with Yuki, but more like "oh....so Nagato-san's here as well. That explains it."
What "it" is will be explained as the series progresses.

Just from looking at these avatars, the animation quality is sickeningly good.
Is this by Kyoto Animation? Has Air been dethroned!?!?
Man, I have to say that the "reasons" for Mikuru's admission into the club and the naming of the club got me falling off my chair laughing my face off. Excellent job!

Yes! Haruhi is animated by Kyoto Animation~ In terms of art direction, it's quite different from Air since it's 95% comedy (A safer comparison would be Kanon).

AIR wasn't holding the throne to be precise. But yeah, Suzumiya Haruhi is by Kyoto Animation and on top of that lightyears ahead of the current standard. :)
And to add one more gif, asuki safe/not safe. :)

In other words:
DVD 0 (episode 00) + 1-6 (episode 2~13) + 7 (episode 14)
I'm surprised that they placed "Asahina Mikuru no Bouken" on its own disk, but that's fine, it deserves it. :heh:
I'm sold after watching two eps of this.
I've officially converted to Haruhi-ism. :)
Kyoto Animation and Noizi Itou combined is just too godly.
DVDs are expensive... :twitch:

I sincerely do not understand Japanese anime DVD pricing or release schedules.
Having read the spoilers and such (by choice): Yuki's an alien, Mikuru's from the future, Itsuki has ESP, and Haruhi herself is omnipotent.
Does Kyon have any powers?

I can only wonder what Shana would have been like if Kyoto had done it instead of JC Staff.

Does Kyon have any powers?I haven't read the novels and there's utterly no basis for this except for one nagging thought I keep on having...
I wouldn't be surprised at all if 'Kyon' himself doesn't even exist.
I can only wonder what Shana would have been like if Kyoto had done it instead of JC Staff. In the 'many hairstyles' moments Haruhi looks too reminiscent to Shana for my tastes. I really do prefer her with her more stable 'post-Kyon' look :D

I got the first episode late last night, and damn I kept waking everyone with my falling out of my chair and laughing. This show is simply too good, it's got me hooked from the get-go. :D
Needless to say, I'm pining for the next episode subbed :p

LOL That banner was made from a momentary joke-reference to the 'Uncle Sam' ad that struck me when I was showing a friend some screenshots. Didn't really think of it as an ACTUAL army.... hmm.. maybe we should set one up... or perhaps a HHH (yet another Shuffle reference) or something. :D

Woo! a Haruhi army! I got my gun ready :p (pending confirmation from Woland of course) :D
But recruiting comes first, all those in favour of a Haruhi Army, please stand up!

That sounds like a standard kj1980 question, but I'll provide a few reasons first:
- Unlike western television shows (most of which have giant corporate backings), animes (animation companies) rely a great deal on DVD sales as a source of their income and budget (on top of sponsors).
- Like many other Japanese products you might see in your daily life, you'll know that the Japanese places a silly amount of attention on product quality and presentation. Even if nobody ever notice, the contents on legitimate Japanese DVDs usually feature the best video and audio qualities you'll find anywhere.
- Although anime is a giant industry as a whole, individual animes on their own aren't that big: limited fanbase and exposure, appeals only to certain groups, etc. So each sale has to count.
- Although the above point sounds a little unreasonable, the fact is that otakus ARE willing to shell out their money for these DVDs, so "if this is the standard price, and it's selling, then keep it this way".
As for the schedule, unlike western TV programs, where DVDs are usually released as whole "season packages", anime DVDs are being released while the show is still on the air ("strike while the iron's hot", rather than wait until everything's over and interest level drops) so there tends to be some gap between releases while they sync with the airing schedule. Other than that, the gap is just the normal time it takes to put together a single DVD volume
Having read the spoilers and such (by choice): Yuki's an alien, Mikuru's from the future, Itsuki has ESP, and Haruhi herself is omnipotent.
Does Kyon have any powers?
...Yes, but probably not in the way you think.
Just watch on, and you'll find out eventually.
I'm beginning to think that having "Asahina Mikuru no Bouken" as the first episode was a correct choice after all. I think Kyoani is trying to go this way: once you learn more and more about the characters and plot, you'll slowly learn about why and how things happen. Eventually, the anime will probably go up to the point where SOS-dan starts filming the movie (novel volume 2), and that's where you'll finally see the production process of the movie which will make you go "OH, THAT'S WHY! HAHAHA". Like the reason why Yuki jumped Mikuru during the park battle scene, the reason why Mikuru is advertising for all these shops, the reason for the flock of doves at the beginning of episode00's opening, etc.

Well, I don't want to get into an argument about this since there's obviously no way of it bearing any meaning in any sense (and this is really a tangent to the thread), but I wonder if they'd considered that by lowering their prices, they might be able to grow their audience...
I guess word of mouth doesn't work the same way over there as it does here...

Haha I know what you mean. You could always get the Raw of episode 2 and watch that without a wink of knowledge of what's going on to satiate the hunger...that is unless you already have episode 2 and understand everything. IN that case, I really feel sorry for you :(

I've been downloading some other subs... but it's like going to a methodone clinic... it's just not the real stuff... the good stuff...

Where are you guys getting your episodes? I'm trying to find the RAW episodes of 2 & 3 and I've had no luck. Help please.

No offense, but they're a huge industry in one of the five richest countries in the world. I'm pretty sure they've worked on the price point/demand a little more than with a dartboard. The fact is, otaku (the primary consumer) have a ton of disposable income, they (the anime companies) make profit at the current price points, and until they stop making their profit at the current price points, there's a disincentive to lower it. Watching anime past high school is socially stigmatizing in Japan, so there's a limit to the ability to "grow" the audience. (Here's a link to kj's post about it (http://forums.animesuki.com/showpost.php?p=265710&postcount=7)).

"Hooray Hooray Haruhi"?
"Hail Hail Haruhi"? <-- I'm leaning towards this one... :D
Can't really think of any Japanese based 'H_ H_' phrases... :(

And to the anime, for which it stands,
One nation, under Aliens,
With Future Maids, and ESP for all

See, I'm torn between making up something new or just going with S.O.S. dan
The full meaning of S.O.S. has its own charm to go with it :p

If we use SOS then 'army' doesn't really fit does it? ^^0
edit: Tho if 'dan' is translated as 'Corps' then it would go nicely..
'dan' - group, corps, party, band, team, company, troupe.
Speaking of which, I'm really interested how they subbed SOS-dan...

Fascinating. See, I was under the assumption that the climate towards animation in Japan was more relaxed than it is here in America (which seems to have been relaxing further in recent years).
The disconnect in cultural acceptance between Manga and Anime is especially fascinating.
I wonder if fan culture will start pulling the mainstream along by the nose in Japan as its begun to in America, what with our culture eating itself.
