I guess this must have been female characters only, as nobody as awesome as Nagi could be left out of the top ten. It's simply physically impossible.

had expected arika and erstin to be top five if not top three. Surprised that arika was beaten by shizuru, but definitely like the shizuru in mai otome way over mai hime. Surprised that natsuki rank so low, probably she was a center-figure yet.

Who'd have thought.. but they do somewhat reflect upon our own fave coral otome poll here. Hmm, must have been all female, I expect Nagi would have made top 10 if he had been included. Just how offical is this poll? What about the poll on the Sunrise's Mai Otome site? Have these results ever came to effect anything other that a new (and very cool) wallpaper?
And just believing Erstin got so high because of her chest I just shortsighted-ness. They are far from her only asset, take a look at her personality, the cute factor, and the way she is just so.. so.. innocent. And perhaps just a little useless when it comes to things such as hiking, but ah well..

Father complex? Aside that Sergei is her foster parents he doesn't seem to me as a paternal figure (even if he try but is too young for that)... surely Nina doesn't see him like that.
Nina appear to me like the classical girl (a bit obsessed but far less than other peple in this and former series) in love and she is (incredible) cute rather than creepy :)
Shizuru first and Arika second? Wow, in my ranking they would be second from bottom and last respectively. Talk about a difference in opinions. :)

I'm happy with the results although this doesn't surprise me as I'm not as 'discontented' with Otome as many others are. You're always going to get different favorites, although I've actually never 'hated' an anime or cartoon character so I never know how to respond to that.

Seriously though, what really did the latest episode 'add' to Nina's character, I'm a little curious. It clarified things I suppose, but I was slightly disappointed we found out nothing 'new' about Nina herself. And she's teary, angry, blushy - but it wasn't really expanded upon. In fact more doors were opened for Arika and Mashiro in terms of participation in main plot, again. I suppose she came across very sweet in the scene with the little thief, but I'm getting a bit concerned that this 'dad' thing is beginning to swamp her character.

We'll, first thing up is that any episode with decent Nina screen time is good in my eyes, so this one hit it off straight away. But beyond that, the clarification this episode provided was needed, since as a secondary-main character, knowing about them is kind of important.. and in a 26 episode series with 25 minute episodes, I think it's safe to say we'll get another Nina-ep. Covering it all this early on, in detail, with no prior base would be a bad idea. And in all honesty and defense, how much exactly does the average episode add to, say, Arika's character. I won't start on that, but I think you are being a little unfair on this episode, well, your opinions.
I'm personally not worried at all by this so-called father complex. Nina is a parent-less child, at an age when someone would probably start to benefit from having real friends, yet is a very withdrawn person. She views things with the eye of a pessimist, sure fire way to not be that happy, but a way to know what's what. No doubt she suffers from all of this, and with no real friends until just recently (the arrival of such people as Arika and Erstin was very good for her), this all grinds her down mentally. She longs for someone to connect with, and the only person that showed her any true kindness in that past was Sergei, so she automatically admires and connects with him. This is proven by her reaction to Erstin's comment on 'buying her a present' and the mention of a party and such things, she isn't used to kind acts towards her from such a number of people. Nina probably does have difficulty placing and naming her feelings, but I'm sure what she feels for Sergei is just very, very strong love for a parent, not the father-complex kinda love.
Of course, she can blame a large part of this on herself, being so unconnected from social events, she makes things harder on herself the way getting to know her is so difficult, and the way her feelings build up so much that her few 'outbursts' are enough to detract much friendly interest in her. Luckily enough, she just stumbled across some real friends, who will act as a good influence on her. I'm sure that with time and effort, she will become much a more open person, and will perhaps be able to catagorize the feelings she has for Sergei and search for some more suitable partner (you know who I'm betting on ;) ).
I think people don't see that Arika isn't the only one to experience such giant changes in lifestyle. The arrival of Arika certinely did Nina good as she finally has to learn to tolerate people, and finally to liking them. From her first appearance in this series I think she has improved greatly. From closed off and impossible to get to know to telling Arika of her feelings for Sergei this episode, I think we can expect some healthy changes in the rest of this series. After all, we are not even half way through, and have already seen very promising changes in her character.
And, no, that isn't mear optimism. What do you think of my idea?

I think, that I appreciate how you always expand your points Preston, I could never claim to misunderstand you :heh: It's also quite obvious that you have much enthusiasm for the character and I have no wish to question it because I too find her interesting in 'potential'. I think though, for one of the three major characters always plugged on the posters etc that she deserved a little more than she's currently getting. There have been several episodes that have gradually laid on more levels to Arika, particularly those on the trip and the Mashiro ones before. It's not a lot, but it doesn't have to be leaps and bounds.
The recent episode wasn't 'bad' for her Nina, but a lot of what you put about Nina above was evident before the episode screened. Truthfully the only thing that I felt it cleared up was 1) she was indeed suspicious and very grumpy about Sergs/Arika 2) her attitude towards Rena (which was probably the most interesting for me) 3) her 'precise' feelings for Sergs, which Arika now knows about as well.
What I had hoped was that the episode would be used to direct Nina into a more specific direction, and provide more insight into the roots of what she feels - most of which I understand more now due to Sergei's expansion in previous episodes. So far it seems likely that the rest of the series will base her characterisation around Sergs as well, or maybe Nagi. When Nina was taken aback by Erstin's proposal of birthday celebration early on the episode, I thought ''yes!'', lets see more of the Nina-of-the-norm again. But no, it reverted back to the same strained conversing with Arika wandering the streets. She's so awkward and tongue-tied with Sergei that we're unable to know much about the character unless she 'bursts' in a fury of jealousy or tears.
But anyway, I do quite agree there is an interesting complex and slightly fragile side to the character, I'm just a bit dubious that the writers are going to do that justice.

Hmm, I was worried with the amount of time she was getting on screen, but this episode bodes well for the future I think. I think we can trust the writers to include her as a significant role in future episodes. If not, then I won't be happy, but moaning about it won't change anything. This episode showed me that she wasn't just some afterthought thrown in to create some sort of triangle with Arika and Mashiro, I think the rather Arika-focused start was just that, and that the series will balance it's screen time and who it focuses on in the future.
To be honest, I'm not entirely sure where my opinions are based, but I feel firmly that people are taking these feelings for Sergei way the wrong way. It will take further developments in the series to proove this, but I except Nina's popularity to only improve as she becomes more.. open to social events.
I think this episode showed her reluctance to change, and the fact that the shock of the comments about the party wore off quickly doesn't worry me. This showed some development, and I see Nina becoming slightly more open to such discussions in the future. I was pleased with what we got, to be honest.
Then again, Nina getting such a sudden boost in screen time probably blinded me slightly. My expectations were not high in her department, and I was pleasantly surprized with what we got. Perhaps you were expecting more that I? Not that I'm disagreeing with you on anything but the Sergey front, more information on Nina's past and present would have been great, but with another 15 episodes to go, I'm sure there will be ample opportunities for the expansion of her character, and the destruction of any talk of father-complexes and related nasties.
Talking to people always helps, and perhaps future talks with Arika will help Nina place her feelings for Sergei. Opening up to Arika to tell her that she feels some strong feelings for Sergei looked to be a major step for her, I expect more of this in the future, with greater achievements in placing those feelings and perhaps discovering a little more about herself in the process. She also voiced her worries of Arika and Sergei to her, that probably took some effort to put her emotions into words, it isn't think kind of thing a person like Nina can do easily. It can only be a good thing for her, and would be an interesting thing for viewers to see, I have faith the writers will include similar developments in their work.

To be honest, I'm not entirely sure where my opinions are based, but I feel firmly that people are taking these feelings for Sergei way the wrong way. It will take further developments in the series to proove this, but I except Nina's popularity to only improve as she becomes more.. open to social events.
I think this episode showed her reluctance to change, and the fact that the shock of the comments about the party wore off quickly doesn't worry me. This showed some development, and I see Nina becoming slightly more open to such discussions in the future. I was pleased with what we got, to be honest.
Well, at the very least, I suppose there is more of an attempt to make Sergei likeable, to the point where the viewer can 'understand' why she's really smitten with him - which is quite unlike many anime men. Although for me, his 'best' moments have come through when with Arika. *shrugs*
Nina 'does' really need to be shown with other characters, just to get a more rounded impression of what she's like (one of the reason why I was so interested with her interraction with Tomoe) and I suppose her moments with Arika in the latest episode may provide the door for this to happen - I hope - we'll see.
Then again, Nina getting such a sudden boost in screen time probably blinded me slightly. My expectations were not high in her department, and I was pleasantly surprized with what we got. Perhaps you were expecting more that I?

I don't find her that different, she's still the same grump and brooder - the main difference (besides being more mature, communicative and less of a prude) is that her job is now central to her characterisation - it's not the character per se, just the role she's been given. In HiME she was free to wander and do her own thing. So I've got these expectations that she's suddenly going to spring into action and show a multitude of different levels once her office is blown up - she did afterall come across a little differently on the trip.. However, I hope they don't stretch out the wait ''too'' long otherwise it will be sufficated with the weight of expectation itself.

Oh, I agree almost whole-heartedly here. Sergei's character is very likeable. He is a good person, and I believe him about Nina's birthday being on the day it is because they did meet for the first time then. He may be allied with one of the biggest liars (or, hmm, more like half-truth teller) this series will ever see, but I don't think Nina is on the list of people he would decieve, especially on such a topic. He risks his neck to protect Arika, and though she isn't a top favourite on mine, it does wonders in showing the kind of person he is. I believe he is a good person, just working for someone else's goal (ie. Nagi's). I would say the moment when he tell's Nina why he chose that day is one of his best moments, which do, I do agree, lack when it comes to Nina, simply because of the reaction he got.
Nina's got much time left yet to have her character developed through contact with others. I think we are only getting started here, and with the progress from a person who lacked any friends in the long term, until Arika turned up, to a decent amount of good friends, that, for example, want to celebrate her birthday, which she obviously isn't used too. Kind of sad, birthdays at age 15 kind of get routine, but Nina seems to have only had Sergei show an interest in it. This is about the only thing in this series I remain optimistic about, that Nina has got plentiful developments comming up. And, if shes going to die, it will last episode or so against Arika. I'm not sure what they're going to do with deaths this time round. Because of episode 9, the process of death doesn't seem as reversible. It's very likely she's (Nina) going to be fully involved in the war-aspect should/when that happens, but she may not die....hopefully not anyway...

That's fair enough, it would be silly on Sunrise's part to expect fans of HiME-Natsuki to base ther entire viewing experience of Otome on the hope she's going to stir into action. And if you've got actual development of other characters that you're interested in then it's not surprising. It's funny, someone once put (I think it may have been Mentar?) that there was this concern that it could be stiffling on Otome-Shizuru's character to be solely developed through Otome-Natsuki. But having thought about it, I think it's more the reverse: Shizuru has had several intriguing insights opened up: Arika, Tomoe, the rest of the Harem, Nina, Haruka, Midori, Nao's 'vision' - whereas for Natsuki, it's either 1) Shizuru 2) extremely formal or distant Principalisms 3) some very brief 'strange' motives.
What may become extremely vital for her in the future is the ''her'' she keeps referring to. Because it's one of very few things that makes her haughty, pensive and reveals her pre-Pillar days. Some people were surprised by the back-rubbing scene in ep. 9, but I now really appreciate getting that, because it's made me convinced it's just professionalism rather than 'personality'.
I expect this to happen, and I actually have a very in-depth 'article/rant' written by Jango-Joe/Lang that I should have shared long ago, I'll try to dig it out sometime. Yeah I'm interested in reading the views of one of the true God's of ShizNat fanart (may very well have done my absolute fave one). She did a pretty awesome 'Natsuki-Gone-Bad', is that what she's hoping for heh, it would be kinda awesome to see in the anime...

Erstin's category was 'o-heyagakari' or room helper or attendant or whatever you might call it.....basically what Nina and Arika are to Nao.
The two I voted for both ended up at No.1, yay! And Natsuki and Nao made it onto the top 5 of both lists, though I can't quite imagine why anyone would want Nao as their room attendant :heh:

friend Mai Hime, and he said he didn't
like Shizuru, felt she wasn't need
in the story, and all she was there

Well, obviously the same logic could apply to Nao - she is bound to have been somebody's attendant when she was Coral Otome. Although I doubt this person was very pleased by Nao's attendant skills and the level of effort she put. :heh:

Shizuru being the fave onee-sama is a given, none of the other Meisters come even close to her, especially that early in the series.
I used to dislike her in HiME, even hated her when she "abused" Natsuki, but for some reason I can't help but vote for her this time around...
I think Natsuki could've become the fave attendant if her votes weren't split.
No. 3 on both fields is absolutely no joke.
As for Erstin becoming the fave attendant, I kind of saw it coming.
Who doesn't want such a cute attendant like her?
Although being Shizuru's attendant doesn't seem to fit her at all.
