DVD Rip aren't fansub :p

The only two I did NOT check are:

Everyone who proclaims themselves fansubbers should be
worshipped because they do it for free.

This thread is unfair to fansubbers.

Because the first makes no sense, and the second isn't true :P

I don't know, microlith, some people seem to believe the former of those. See, there are two votes for it even now.

what if the raws were on a dvd, they would need to be ripped :)

When DVD rip is mentioned, is it the DVD rips that come with subtitles or is it where the fansubber buys an R2, rips the DVD and subs it? (e.g. OAVs, etc)

Shii
2003-12-12, 14:46
It means DVD rips including subtitles, not raw rips.

Where is my option of I respect all fansub groups with the exception of AnimeJunkies.

I disagree with DVD/LD/VHS rips if there is a public source (ie. TV or Radio).

Haha, ditto. Something just puts me off about those shows that get a bazillion subs. I swear I counted over a dozen subs of the first ep. That's just way too much. So thus I've never seen CC or Naruto.

Osaka always wins. Totally.

Is there an option not to download subs from groups who claim they're the best around and start flaming everyone else when they're proven wrong?

Although certain groups have negative reputations, I think many groups tend to improve as they learn through trial and error. I cringe when I watch some of the older releases from our chan back when we were newbies. (As a matter of fact, when people ask which versions they should download, I will sometimes recommend the "competitor's" version for particular episodes based on personal opinion.) But after a year or so of thrashing around trying to figure out how to make things "suck less", I sincerely hope we're currently at a stage where we can try to make things better. I think a lot of groups are the same way in terms of growth, so I try not to get too biased by the group's track record (to do so would be the pot calling the kettle black, at least from my point of view). The recent emergence of tutorials, supportive channels for specific fansubbing positions (ex: #timers), and reviews with constructive criticism (as opposed to "that group sucks, don't DL their releases, ever, because they do and will always suck!" <- quite encouraging, really) also seems to indicate that a groups' competence could improve relatively quickly if they are so inclined.

On the other hand, I also try not to rely too much on the reputation of the group itself. Even if the group releases one series at subpar/mediocre/superior quality, it doesn't necessarily mean that the group will perform at a similar level on other series that are airing during the same season. Fansubbing isn't a fast food industry which companies allege that every branch produces food at the same "good" quality (apologies for the random analogy, but I recently read Fast Food Nation, and it has left a lasting impression ^_^;). I think the quality of any project is dependant more on the overall competence of the individual group members who work on the series, rather than on the reputed competence of the group itself.

My lil' two cents. ^_^

Oh... er, I guess this post is off-topic from the original thread, which is more about which type of "fansubs" one would consider too unethical for downloading. Oops x.x

You are allowed to vote for more than one option... I guess Microsoft failed at getting their userbase to distingush between "checkboxes" and "option boxes".

Er... is it just me or is the thread and poll somewhat different from what the topic title suggested? I thought this was going to be about which fansubbers are not worthy of downloading from, so I checked the "Thread is unfair" option. >:3

Anyway, I think DVD rips don't quite qualify as fansubs since they're not being subbed by a fan (in the non-profit sense; I'm sure the people who work for anime distro companies are fans to some degree) in the first place. But that isn't going to stop me from downloading a rip to see what the show is about. After all, my only other 'preview' option is buying bootlegs, so it's a choice between two evils.

And although I don't think fansubbers should be worshipped without question for subbing anime for free, I do think they should be appreciated more, especially by ANN.

The recent emergence of tutorials, supportive channels for specific fansubbing positions (ex: #timers), [/i]

#timers is just like, a dozen people in a chan doing the best idleing I've ever seen. I think I saw some discussion on typesetting a while ago... well a few months ago anyway.
#timers still have a long way to go anyway heh.

I download stuff that is good and stuff that I can't get in R1 form so I'm not into downloading R1 DVDrips.

What if the DVD rip is the only thing availible because it is a older show, I don't see how that would make a group "Bad".

What do you think?

I don't mind these types of DVD rips, because they're the only way to get a raw. It's those "ooh, we have DVDrip and we're l33t" types I don't particularly like.

That's not a DVD rip, that's a DVD raw. If you had read through the thread you would see that this question had been posed before far more politely, and I already answered it.

Im afraid I voted for Osaka, being as none of the other selections adequately reflected what I think, as its not really a black and white decision on most fronts.

Being a relative noobie to this though, can someone inform me of what AJ have done to receive such vilification?

The groups I download or don't download from are based on the quality of their work (eg, image quality, translation acuracy, grammar, and all that other good stuff). So I didn't choose any of the options.
