View Full Version : Ichigo's Bankai Lesson
Hey there long time reader never posted.
Finished up to ep. 62 and after watching the Ichigo v Byakuya fight there was one thing I was disappointed about. As Ichigo and Byakuya were duking it out all the while I was waiting in anticipation for another of those flashbacks- this time where Ichigo is with Zangetsu and Yoruichi back at the training ground and he achieves bankai. It never happened.
How exactly did Ichigo beat Zangetsu to achieve bankai? Did he figure out something profound or was it just too mundane to show?
I haven't read the manga either so was there something in the manga not shown in the anime?

jk jk, i donno, i think he managed to get zangetsu to listen to him, he talked him down

They didn't show Renji achieving Bankai either. So either it's not important, or the creators really have no idea how to animate or illustrate it.
I missed that part too, im sure there's a reason why it is left out and its not because of the lack of creativity, maybe they are planning to do the flashback when Ichigo reach the next stage or something.
Judging by the look of Zangetsu, i say Ichigo threatened to play the Spice Girls' third album Forever all day that made Zangetsu decided to give up.

If one does I'm sure they are saving it for when Ichigo needs a power up.

Anyways, I agree with the others in saying that it will probably be a flashback sometime in the future.

Zangetsu said everyone of those swords was a piece of ichigo that was weak and relied upon Zangetsu to much, or something [ I forget the exact wording ]
So, with the risk of loosing Rukia, maybe he just...Broke all the swords and pulled the real one out of his chest, or something o_O;

It's really not important how. He may have just grabbed the right sword (unlikely) but I think it was some spiritual awakening. But we've seen that several times before.

Some people may think it's not really that important how Ichigo got bankai but I just feel the way they built it up in the anime it was pretty anti-climatic not to show it.
I mean, Ichigo had 3 days to achieve bankai and if he didn't there were going to be some serious consequences to his health (which Yoruichi didn't even explain) and the deadline to Rukia's execution had just been shortened. And here was Ichigo plugging away at Zangetsu for several episodes with a seemingly hopeless task of finding the "right" sword. With all the tension building up on whether he would achieve bankai in time suddenly he gate-crashes the execution donning a new spiffy suit and this all-powerful aura. How exactly did he make the transition? You can't really say it could have been down to pot luck in finding the right sword. For him to get bankai would have surely required something more than that.

Actually, if you recall, There was a scene in which he flashed back to firing his Shikai's special ability at will. Now, any sword other then Zangetsu would have proven incapable of doing that. Zangetsu then explained that knowing the name would increase the attack's power. I would assume that using that attack at will is what Zangetsu meant by defeating him, as he is now able to control Zangetsu's ability with his own will.
I think, to my knowledge, (same view as ranchan) he had achieved bankai when he learnt the ability and is able to summon it as his own will.. i don't remember where but i think there is one part where they say that you must be able to summon the soul in the zanpaktou and able to controll him, thats when you achive bankai.

As i remember, shikai is obtained when you know the name of the sword, going into its own inner world. The shikai is improved by knowing and trusting the soul slayer. So, we can say that shikai equals to "knowing your soul slayer, make it your best partner".
Bankai is obtained when you materialize the soul slayer's avatar in the real world and defeat it in some kind of challenge. Zangetsu's was to pick up which soul slayer corresponded to its strongest feelings.

Well, i sure hope there is one. Otherwise Ichigo would be a very boring character if his bankai can only do what he already shown to us.
Bankais are multifacetted. Dont take it only for face value. Ichigo takes things only for face value. His Shikai is a honkingly huge cleaver. He never learnt how to use it to "shoot" until much later on. His bankai makes him run fast. He doesnt know how to do the BlackCrescent thing Hollow Ichi did. And I bet theres more wheere that came from ...

There is also the possibility that there was no correct sword. If you remember, the first sword Ichi grabbed broke really quickly, while the last one they showed him using (and breaking) took a while to break. I believe there also was a comment made about him being to use each sword for longer then the previous one. My belief is that the "correct sword" was whichever one he was holding when he gained enough confidence in himself, or some other mental change.

I was under the impression that Ichigo's first time performing bankai was against Byakuya.
I thought Zangetsu said that when he was able to fire that reiatsu beam from his sword willingly, that he would let him use it and told him how to use it.
Also, with the short amount of time Ichigo had to save Rukia. I'd imagine as soon as he knew he could use it, he probably would have split to go save her. No real need to test it.
Mabye take a real quick dip in that healing pool and get his wounds patched up and then be gone.
Against Byakuya? So how did he know what his bankai would do? He hinted versus Byakuya that he knew his bankai would augment his speed to Godly status.

The same way he learned the name of his Shikai's attack. Zangetsu told him what he needed to know
He wasnt suprised that his blade lost size? Or a brand-new bad-ass jacket came out of nowhere? Or theres suddenly a keyholder at the end of his zanpaktou?
Dang.
It makes sense that Zangetsu can tell him about his Shikai ability because ... he ALREADY attained Shikai. He just hadnt realized all the utilities that came with it. Can Zangetsu talk to him about a status neither he nor Zangetsu has achieved?

Then again, you'dd think that Zangetsu would know enough about himself to know his capabilities. How else would a Soul Slayer be able to train or test it's master?

theres a hollow mask he gains control over but it comes in at the heuco mundo arc after he gets it orihime is scared enough to wet herself cuz of what happened to her brother
Personaly I think Ichigo just keep at it till he ran out of swords. At the end it didn't look so much as if he was intrested in searching for a sword as he was in breaking them.

I am aware, that fillers don't count, but in the Bount Arc they somehow revealed it.
Ichigo realized that not one of these swords are the true Zangetsu but that Zangetsu is in his heart. And then he pulls out a sword of nowhere, like when he attained shikai.
But we'll see, if this will be added or altered in the manga.
