View Full Version : Could Sunrise pull off a 3rd HiME series?
As much as I'd want one, I don't think it'll happen.
I demand Fatty-chan to be the next main character!
She'll be awesome in her own spinoff magical-girl show.

As much as I'd want one, I don't think it'll happen.
The question isn't if they can. The question is if they should.
Obviously they could pull off a 3rd HiME series and they are likely to do one if this one continues to make money for them. There is even a good chance that they could find better writers than Otome seems to have.
While it is possible that they could make a third series as good as the first, the simple fact is that such things tend to devolve. Better they let the franchise die now, than drag it into the gutter. Take a good look at what happened to Tenchi if you doubt that you can have too much of a good thing.

That at least has the benefit of being a bit different, though the resemblance to both Pretty Sammy and Komugi-chan is undeniable.

Oh no! Don't photoshop that!

They'd need to use new characters in another season. Re-using characters can be done once with great effect, but twice is going over the limit.

Hardly. The are many prime examples of continuing trends with the exact same characters that have done exuberantly well. A triology does seem to be the pattern of the moment.
This wouldn't stop any self-respecting company. Money is the main player. While some of the fans say things along the lines of 'let it die here, while it's still good', that isn't what it boils down to. If Sunrise can make a profit, a substantial one at that, a new series will come into existance. Just look at the merchandise - you can see just from this Sunrise is doing very well with their little series, and no small amount of fan complaints is going to change their mind.
Did Lucas stop with the first trilogy of Star Wars? Oh no. Hardcore fans didn't want it, but that wouldn't stop it being very profitable. He may have killed the long running franchise in the fans eyes, but it undeniably made a large amount of money.
Though Evangelion is quite the opposite.. Gainax just keep milking that one.. though they can't do it forever. The film that may never come into existance and a possible OVA are basically just to bring it back into the limelight.
I'm also sure, that no matter how much any of the fans complained, it is likely that the DVDs would end up in their collection regardless. Sunrise would probably guess this, and just so long as they get high sales, good profits, and cover their costs, they don't care how they get the merchandise there.
I see no reason that the 'Mai-' series would stop being profitable for Sunrise any time soon. Just look at their website, it gets update at a very rapid pace, and new merchandise is constantly being announced. Just the other day I think they update tdheir product page for some stuff comming in early-2006. This is the sign of a very healthy series.
Though I'm sure that a 3rd series would not 'drag it into the gutter'. Did people complain about Otome when it was announced? I wasn't around here so I don't know.. but I would guess they did. And I expect they are among us in the forums. I hated the series at the start and couldn't flame it enough.. but now I like it even more that HiME. A very surprizing change for me.
I would say a 3rd series is more than possible, but after that, I'd say a 4th isn't going to happen for any more reason that 3 is a nice number to end on, and people and staff would want to move on. As for me.. I'm not sure what I would want.. if Sunrise could make the series just as good as this, I think I'd like it.
Going back to the post I quoted, if Sunrise made a 3rd series, I expect it would have returning characters, simply because they have big winners now, and introducing even more characters to the already massive cast.. well, lets say, they wouldn't be doing themselves any favours.

The chances of a 3rd series depends on how successful the second is in the eyes of Sunrise. I can't predict how I will feel about a third series. I can't say I am opposed to it. As an RPG player, I've played several games in the same series. Such as playing Final Fantasy 1-10 for example. So in order for me to automatically disregard a 3rd series in regards to HiME and Otome, I'd have to have a double standard in my case.

If we look at it in a different way: What makes a good TV anime series? (As opposed to just being popular). If a "third series" is good enough that it'd be succesfull on its own merits, then Sunrise should be able to "pull it off". However, even if it is good on its merits, it may fail if it is either too similar or too different from previous series, or if popular characters are "ruined" - since non-fans would mostly ignore it anyway and previous fans would be put off.
Personally I think My Otome is better than I had expected. So, there's hope...
How about a Gundam spin-off?

You see.....Starwars had a continuous storyline. And you dont see Chewbaka(sp?) or any characters for ALL the episodes, do you?
But hime/otome uses the same characters, change some's behaviours, and is set in alternate universes.
Practically all Hime characters have appeared in otome. And the story for both is very, very different.
Unless.....you have Mai Latome or something, I dont see how they can use the same cast as a sequel, considering that both hime/otome have practically no shown relation to be related.
How about a Gundam spin-off?
Good idea! I remeber reading on how some people wanted a female lead instead of all the male leads so far. But that'd reduce Mai to a beam spammer

Well, you could do another few series in different universes and have a "Crisis on infinite Mai", where all the different versions meet up and fight a great Evil.

The other parallel universes can get REALLY old, especially with the same cast of characters.

*thinks* A third season with My Hime vs. My Otome .... *stop thinking*
As long they make a good profit they will try to make more about it. (ex. Pokemon)
But then they ae also thinking about what will happen if you "milk" out a serie.
I'm scared when they would make a third season that people will expect more about it then the last two seasons. (can i say seasons, yeah it is seasons).

Of course there's going to be another sequel. This is Mai Hime Z, right? Then we have the series all the fans will hate left: Mai Hime GT, where the characters become ultra mega super strong by transforming themselves into furries. :frustrated:

Actually, its Mai Z-hime, and its not actually "Z". Its a japanese kanji which somehow translate to otohime, which means youngest princess or something...or otome, which translates to "maidens". (ug, NSW explained it in another thread on the possibilities).

I think I could stand one more series from these characters, assuming the quality of the series doesn't drop. Maybe a plotline along the lines of Stellvia (space school drama), or perhaps a more medieval centered story (Haruka would make a great Black Knight :heh: )
Or maybe they'll use Stark's idea and do a Mai HiME / GSD hybrid, and I'll have a siezure and die.

Oh no, Nao would make an even better Black Knight (What I wouldn't give to see her re-enact the "tis but a scratch" scene in The Holy Grail. )
Haruka-Chan on the other hand would make an excellent Knight Who Says Ni, and Shizuru would be an excellent Bridgekeeper (Her asking in her sexy voice "What is your favourite color" alone would make a knight fall into the pit of lava, wrong answer or not. :P )

A possible idea for a third Mai- series could be using priestesses -miko.

After all, they employed HiME, and now are using Otome.

If the quality's good enough and they kept the same character designer I'd watch it for sure. I wouldn't mind it being like the 3rd in a trilogy as it would feel odd to change the whole feel of it if it was the last MAI related series. Sometimes things are best kept in the same mould if you know what I mean.
I'd like to see a direct sequel to Mai Hime (I.E The same universe and characters). I mean, there were lots of unanswered questions in HiME and I doubt Otome will answer any of them. IIRC Nagi even mentioned something about that "the real challenge would begin now", in the last episode.

Question: Why is there a Z in the title?
Answer: It isn't Z, it's 乙, which is a Jananese kanji character. If you spell out Otome, it's 乙女. They took out 女 so the title would be pronounced "Mai Oto-Hime", except that nobody pronounces it that way. (credit: lone_wolf)

However, note there IS a tendency to use '乙' as a substitute for 'Z' in Japanese Internet lingo... So you really can't deny that the creators had no intention of making a small reference to the 'Z'.
Which could be why 舞-乙乙HiME (pronounced Mai Otsutsu-me) isn't far off...? (eh... never mind)

I think they could pull it off right.
In retrospect, I think 26 episodes for Hime and Otome are a bit short. I wouldn't mind if each series were 50 episodes long or something. They have enough interesting characters to base entire angles off of.
and the question is... who will be a main character their?? (probably Natsuki and SHIZURU AGain :heh: )
How about Mai-Hina? Harem-trying to get into college show with Shizuru as the maincharacter.

Someone should at least do a doujinshi of that!
Hmmm another Mai show...I suppose if the premise was good enough. I'm keen to see how Otome maps out before I commit any support to a third series. I do think both HiME and Otome should be(en) longer run than 26 epsiodes each. There was enough material (and characters) to go past 26, but just my opinion.

There is already a Gundam "Mai-series" spinoff. It's Mai-Otome. Look at the first episode. Shizuru cutting the airplane was all Impulse gundam animation. Look at episode 13. Akane flying off harks Freedom reused animation cells flying off after a battle.
Then again, I wouldn't mind having the Mai-series take over as Sunrise's "main" franchise. Sure is more enjoyable than most Gundam series.

Its different though....in gundam, you have people piloting a giant robot (gundam), whereas in Mai Otome, we have girls (virgins only) who can materialise a robe with special abilities, namely flying, a weapon, and manipulation of the nano technology.
I one most of the mai hime fans would like a third part of this but they should make a spinoff in the story another writer just to ensure that do not happen the same that happened to dragonballz.. they just need the same writer with a new one just to stay with a little touch of the old one .... another thing same character with same personalities but letting them go, I mean thse spot light on mai tate mikoto and new ones.... hopefully for them they still got romance to come up wioth since mai and tate didnt finish in anything so they can come up with something there... and with the action same weapons for them btu different i mean I know they can do a better job in designing weapons for instance, the only one I liked in therm of design was mikotos weapon...... and for finishig they have to put tate fightning..... i thing it should be
35%comedy
35%action
30%romance and that will be it
and for changing the mind of a anime producer we really can just gather a few thousands of fans and drop something on their site I mean givem promotion and like make some sort of request with the every fan name and hopefully theyll pay attention to it I mean is us the one that make them gain money so think about it
well at east thats my opinion sigh....

The thread is just getting silly now. If nobody has anything real to say, I'll just close it.
I shall try saving this thread before NSW has a reason to close it.;)
Pulling off a third series, or rather, an entire franchise the Mai-series is possible, but the problem would be that reusing the same characters can be quite limiting.
For another Sunrise franchise, Gundam, never once did they use the exact same character designs for an "alternate universe". Same goes for gundam designs. (well, S-freedom is an exception...GSD has alot of reused stuf anyways).
At the very most, I'd see the possibility for a 3rd series using the same characters, either in a sequel for MO, or yet another alternate-world. Anymore would get boring, especially since you can only go so far with the alternate-world concept.
And of course....never let Fukuda and wife ever touch this series.:heh:
Shizuru's list
I'm pretty sure she allready has one ;)
I do think that with the stagnation of Gundam Sunrise is trying to position Hime as its next massive franchise. Otome is very popular and with good reason since I see it as a vast improovement over the rather uneven Hime. They have a huge pool of character and genres to draw on as well as massive fan support. All they have to do is create a few new characters for a new series as well as continue to develop old personalities and they have another hit.
as well as continue to develop old personalities and they have another hit.
Well, the problem is....old characters from MH were already developed in MO.
Err, what I mean is, Takumi of MO = Takumi of MH just before he died. People like Takumi, Akira, Shizuru, Natsuki in MO are already the "end product" of MH, so they didnt develop in MO at all.
Thats the real problem....you cant develop if you are already developed, can you? Of course, I personally dont mind if they have a go at another alternate-universe Mai-series, with ShizNat/Arika/Nina/Mashiro/Mai.:heh:
I am not usre I agree there, personally I was rather bored by Shizuru until the very end, but now in MO iove definitely grown to like her a lot more and do feel that the character has evolved beyond its previous iteration. Much in the same way we get a more mature and responsible Nao, a mellowed out natsuki and an Akane that has gotten over her shyness.
Seeing how the series is barely past its half point I look forward to seeing what the next evolution in their characters will be. I am also enjoying the new Tate and Mashiro much more so no issues with the personality switches for tapped out characters.

I imagine they don't wrap up a single bit of Mai HiME or Otome in Otome, and leave it open for a third series that ties the two together. Though in the darkest reaches of my mind, I compare Otome to Battlestar Galactica, and the Otome universe takes places first, and they travel to Earth to start the carnival. *shudder*

Just to do something on topic.
Lets see how Mai Otome develops before we all go screaming for a third series.
Spoiler if you have not watched ep 14. ( I think )
I hope it doesnt go to where its heading with the Sergei Akiria romance, and from the looks at the preview for next ep. It does. But lets wait and see

Initial Hime.
I could so see Natsuki as a genius street racer...
Mai Noir
The beautiful assassins, Natsuki and Shizuru.
Mai Slayers
The adventures of the fiery sorceress, Mai Inverse, and her sword slinging sidekick, Mikoto.
