What are thy favorite fictional martial/military/warrior cultures?

For those who don't know the meaning of the word martial, Martial is an synonym for "military", "warrior" or "warlike".

I believe there is a similar thread in the General anime sub-forum.

1. Yautja (Aliens versus Predator): Actually they are more like a race of hunters than a warrior race but their culture still holds a martial tradition.

2. Minbari (Babylon 5): They are actually a multi-purpose society based on caste system rather than a martial society. But the Minbari warrior caste have a very interesting, strict and rigid military culture.

3. Klingons (Star Trek) have one of the most complex warrior cultures with martial societal norms and codes of honor.

4. Kree (Marvel comics): they are a fierce and proud martial race whose greatest and most famed soldier is Captain Mar-Vell who then fought alongside the Avengers and other Earth superheroes until his timely death.

5. Skrulls (Marvel Comics): they are also a martial race, very aggresive and brutal but possess a code of honor, too. The best example of a typical Skrull warrior is Kl'rt the Super-Skrull.

6. Romulans (Star Trek): are a proud militaristic race and have their own code of honor.

7. Asgardians (Marvel comics): a warlike race of gods whose martial culture have inspired the existence of Vikings. No Asgardian represents Asgardian honor and pride better than Thor.

8. Amazons (DC Comics): a proud and skillful warrior race where Wonder Woman comes from.

Cimmerians (Conan the Barbarian): I understand they are a warrior tribe but I don't know much about them enough to judge them.

Khunds (DC comics): i have seen them in a few comics. I believe they have a martial culture but I haven't read enough about Khunds enough to judge them.

Yautja would have to be mine. I like the Hunter aspect of their race.
Amazons would have to be my 2nd, mainly cause you don't have a lot of female based warrior tribes out there.

So far no mention of the Jedi? George Lucas had lots of inspiration from Oriental martial arts philosophy when coming up with the Jedi.

In a recent interview with Jet Li on his upcoming martial arts movie "Fearless", Li mentions some of the Chinese martial arts philosophy that the highest level for martial arts master to achieve is to prevent conflict without having to resort to use of force, which is pretty much what the Jedis in the Old Republic did, though whether it is successful is another debate. :D

Why use fictional ones if there are so many real ones that are just as good if not better?

Mideval England with their knights, catapalts, long bowmen, and large scale armies of foot soldiers. Their idea of chivalry and nobelity that drove the soldiers to cheer at the sound of battle.

Vickings that would plunder the riches of churches, live only to die in battle, and developed one of the most feared type of warrior: berserker, a warrior not afraid of death. This was an army of pirates which the world had never seen before.

The Roman empire during the bronze age. A large scale army of highly trained, fully modern (for the time) soldiers of the elite level. With amazing means to travel over land and sea, they told stories of great conquests.

Ancient Greek. A great democracy of epic tales depicting a war-loving society where the Gods would favor the war-like. Charging into battle with emphasis on strategy and cunning.

And that's just pre-modern Europe!

I have heard and read about human warrior cultures such as Spartans from Ancient Greece, Scandianavian Vikings, Japanese samurai, Mongols, Huns, Highlanders and etc. But they all ceased to exist and their descendants became a different kind of people who forgot the martial cultures of their ancestors.

Sparta was a perfect example of a human warrior society.

Sparta was, above all, a military state, and emphasis on military fitness began virtually at birth. Shortly after birth, a child was brought before the elders of the tribe, who decided whether it was to be reared or not. If found defective or weak, the baby was dropped off a cliff called the Apothetae, or Place of Rejection. In this way attempts were made to secure the maintenance of high physical standards in Sparta. From the earliest days of the Spartan, the claim on his life by the state was absolute and strictly enforced. Until the age of seven, boys were educated at home and were taught to fight their fears as well as general superstition by their nurses, who were prized in Greece. Their training was then undertaken by the state in the agoge system and supervised by the paidonomos, an official appointed for that purpose. This training consisted for the most part in physical exercises, such as dancing, gymnastics, and ball-games, with music and literature occupying a subordinate position.

Yes, unfortunately. When the need for war disapears or when the war-like are defeated, the culture changes radically. But such is life. Our world is one of chaos, even the glorious Roman empire was doomed to fall so that a greater society could bloom from its corpse. And such is probably the fate of Europe and the Americas.
