I'm going to limit the poll so that you can only vote for your Top most favorite My-Otome character, but you can list the 2, 3 or 4 place winners you post if you'd like. So, here's my list, as of ep. 16:
1. Nina
2. Arika
- I hate to admit it, but those 2 really grew on me recently.
3. Shizuru
- She's too close to being perfect it's getting scary, she's just too good to be true, especially if you consider her HiME counterpart.
4. Nao
- Just like Shizuru, I used to hate her HiME counterpart, but her "realistic with a good side" attitude in Otome grew on me.
5. Erstin
- She was the most "interesting" newcomer early in the series, but her development has been boring as of late.

Mai might grab one of those spots when and if she finally appears.
But those are the most "memorable" chars in Otome so far.

Nina Wong: Lately she's becoming a fave of mine... can't seem to take her out of my mind when I try to write my new fanfic...

Arika Yumemiya: I came to like her character alongside Mashiro...

Mai Tohkia (or whatever the spelling of "Tohkia" was): it took her a long time to appear back in the series but the wait should be worth it... I hope

Natsuki Kruger and Shuzuru Viola: Those two doesn't impress me as they did in MH.... so sad....

Call me faithful - they are my ultimate; I adore all the characters (even that psycho hose beast Tomoe :D) - but I stick to my roots, and these two did it for me (Though Nao and Chie ae fast becoming my top faves too :D)

Sunrise did a fairly good job in baiting the viewers with the HiME cast, making sure people would tune in and now that people have invested their time, old faves like Natsuki and Shizuru will slowly be phased out in favor for their new crop of chars :)

I don't mind....I'll just have to revisit the HiME series to get my fix.

Yet....I keep craving and hoping for more ShizNat surprise. :P (sue me)

I think you answered your own question ^_^

Nah I think Shizuru is going to suffer from a double-sided sword - there is an obvious massive following for the character but (she's also hated by a few and) she also has a few drawbacks in her Otome-role. Shizuru is going to be a character who is very much viewed against her HiME-counterpart (and I suppose the same is true for Natsuki and Mai)

I agree with Juju that there seems to have been a 'cramming' of ShizNat near the beginning, and then last few episodes have been kinda sparse of giving them any real integration with the rest of the characters. I was very disappointed with the brief Miyu and Shizuru one..

In the case of Nao, well she's 'cool' but we also know more about what makes her tick, and she's able to integrate with both older adults and the corals which virtually all the other charactes aren't able to do.

Anyway this sort of thing is very dependent on the latest proceedings. For instance, if Natsuki and Midori absolutely kicks ass next episode and show a side to them we've never seen before, thus pulling our support and emotional strings - then I think their votes may increase. Obviously.


EDIT: I voted for Shizuru heh, simply as I've been close to dropping Otome a few times and I stuck around for the character. Each for their own preference I guess.

1) Nao - She was one of my favorites in MH, and she remains at the top of my list through all of MO so far. I really loved her twisted personallity in MH, and seeing her change to become nice in MO was great, because although she isn't so obviously bad she still remains cool, and she got one of the best attitudes in the show.

2) Arika/Mashiro - I can't decide which one is better. I don't know what happened to me lately. They both pissed me off immensely at the beginning of the series, but I am getting to like them lately.

3) Nagi - don't ask why ... just don't ask ... it must be the voice: every time I hear his voice I think Chrno ... but I do happen to like Nagi's scheming. He is the one person who always turns out to do something unexpected, keeps me interested in the show.

My vote goes to Nagi. He's a manipulative little bastard, and a political genius way ahead of everyone else.
Also, he’s one of those villains who does not commit the error to repent of his crimes when everything starts to fall apart, suddenly converting to the good side only to die 10 minutes later saving the life of the hero of the story. A tv trope that I find truly repellent, in fact as much as I love Nagi in the anime, I hate his manga (Otome) counterpart.
Then I adore Nao (ironicly cynical), Haruka, and the sweet and obsessed Nina.

Yes. it's semi-true. See in the Mai Otome drama CDs, it explains that Natsuki was the one crushing on Shizuru when Natsuki was just a coral. In fact she was one of Shizuru's "in-the-closet" fan girls.

Story goes, that Natsuki wanted to become her room attendant and Shizuru was aware of this. Shizuru noticed Natsuki to be a beauty that stood out from the rest but it was not enough to impress her since she thought that Natsuki was just another fan girl. As she had treated any of her fangirls, Shizuru tried to make a move on Natsuki and well...Natsuki didn't take it too well, resulting in Natsuki slapping Shizuru in the face. Shizuru perplexed by this action and thought that it was what Natsuki wanted since all her fangirls expect the same treatment. Shizuru then couldn't stop thinking about Natsuki and how different she reacted as opposed to her other fangirls. Haruka noticed that she was acting peculiar because "some coral gave her the cold shoulder" and so Haruka devised a plan with Yukino's help

Natsuki's ideal perception of the "perfect" Shizuru faded and she sorta lost all motivation to do anything. Mai had to try to cheer her up but Natsuki wouldn't budge. It wasn't until Haruka (who knew of the incident) marched right up to Natsuki and announced that Natsuki was to be her new room attendant. Shizuru, following right behind Haruka, didn't sound too thrilled about this and when Haruka noticed her reaction, she declared a battle against Shizuru. Winner takes all and the prize was Natsuki.

Seeing that Natsuki was still glum over the ordeal, made one last attempt at trying to convince Natsuki that her rightful place was with Shizuru as her room attendant. It wasn't until Mai had mentioned that perhaps "she" should become Shizuru's attendant. This doesn't sit well with Natsuki so she definitely reacts. Mai then points out that it was perhaps Natsuki's fault to for dreaming up a false image of Shizuru-oneesama and that maybe she's angry because she just thinks all her fans are all the same. Anyhow, Natsuki disagrees with Mai becoming Shizuru-Oneesama's room attendant so Mai encourages her to go work things out with Shizuru.

So during the CD track you hear running and panting coming from Natsuki who finally tracked down Shizuru. She practically (in a very raspy) voice admits her desire to become her room attendant for the "Real" Shizuru and not the image of her that she willfully constructed. Shizuru is touched by this and has a new "real" reason to fight Haruka in order to win Natsuki.

Shizuru comes out the victor of course and the rest is history.

It does not supprise me too much. Even though I loved Natsuki in HiME, she does not really get a lot of chances to shine in Otome. Except when she finally pulls out the big gun at the end, her role is mostly just telling the audience what is going on, or a bit of comedy relief with the interation between her and Shizuru or her and Nao.

While I can understand that Arika is not liked, but to me, Arika was one of the reason what made My-Otome. She is so clumsy and innocent, but always positive. This was surprise to me, because usually I don't like that kind of characters, but there was just something that just hit me.

Natsuki's grammer is wrong? Don't you mean Suzuhiro Haruka? Natsuki is quite the intelligient person and her Keigo is just considered "blunt" but it doesn't mean it's a grammer issue. In fact, a lot of people have misconceptions of Kuga Natsuki. Having been partly reared in a lab facility, she would be exposed to plenty and in "Natsuki's Prelude" which is a mini-novel and backstory of Natsuki herself, it explains that she never gave any of her teachers any reason to complain when it came to her grades. Aside from her extreme absences, she did very well with her exams. Also, her backstory explains that her father was, being an import/export manager, used to take Natsuki with him whenever he traveled the world. And she loved camping with him. Having traveled a lot, she's attained a lot of worldy wisdom.

There's a translation of Natsuki's Prelude somewhere, but if you read Japanese, then I suggest you purchase a copy of both volumes of the Mai Hime animation books. They are about the size of standard manga but it's basically a guide to the series and contains data on each of the characters. it also include Character Model Sheets and and episode synopsis.

The bonus feature is that it contains that backstory I mentioned, called "Natsuki no Prelude" and it gives valuable insight to Natsuki's past, how and when she awakened as a Hime, her early friendship with Shizuru and "why" Shizuru decided to run for "SetoKaichou."

My favorite character is really Nina, with Arika following at second and Erstien at third.

In my opinion the MH characters didn't really do it for me in Otome. They were great in all but I fell in love with the Otome characters more.

I Voted For Nagi. The Actor "Akira Ishida" does Nagi's voice and Gaara's voice in Naruto. Two Shows I deeply am intrigued by. For some reason I like Japanese speaking people better than us Americans. Nagi 's just so.. SO.. -Faints- hot.. -Faints Again-

Ishida is also the voice of Zexion in Kingdom Hearts, a great character IMHO, and he's definitely one of the best Japanese seiyu. Nagi with that voice sounds really devious yet playful (hot indeed...:p), too bad that the equivalent American voice doesn't do him any justice at all.

Now before I start let me say that I did find some enjoyment out of the series, but I would definitely not rank it very highly on my list. Since this isn't really the place for it, I'm not going to even list the issues that i had with the series as a whole, but there was only one character that I really liked (and who got far too little screentime in my opinion) which was Nao.

Despite myself I liked her in Mai-HiME and I liked her even more in her re-incarnation for Otome. Her seiyuu has got her character down pat, and she has some of the best snarky lines in the show.

I would struggle to actually list my second and third favourites, because I simply did not like any of the new cast. I was actually relieved when Mai reappeared, so she would probably come in second, with Natsuki barely in third for being the butt of many jokes, including that wonderful (although very fan-servicey) re-incarnation of the hitch-hiking gag from HiME.

Shiho Huit!!!! Her makimaki and her new personality is just so funny. I prefer Shiho Huit, Munkata Shiho was more annoying.Also, from all otomes, her weapon is just the most unique. When not being able to materialize, I would say she is one of the strongest.

My choice is Natsuki, once again xD She was the same ..and different ..but just seeing her make her reappearance made me happy. Her fight scenes could've been a little better but her robe and her big-ass gun made up for Duran's absence. And the hitchhike made me laugh just as hard as the first time.

As for new characters, I loved Rosalie despite her limited screen time. Her attitude and look just made her an instant win for me <3

Besides them, Chie was awesome. She always knew what was up and was always the one saving me from makimaki hell xo Plus she was much prettier with the removal of her glasses.

Arika doesn't make my top 3 but I loved her as the new main character. At first she was a little annoying but by the end I thought she was pretty close to Mai's amazingness in HiME. Erstin was a great addition too, but Nina was just mediocre.

This may sound odd, but I loved Mashiro in Mai-Otome. Her character development was great. In HiME, she was just the typical little girl who had a mysterious past, but in Mai-Otome, she felt more human. Besides, Arika/Mashiro is so cute.

I actually didn't like Mashiro at first, especially because of what a 180 she was from her HiME counterpart. By the end of the series, I thought she was totally cool. Comparing her behavior in episode 1 of Otome to episode 1 of Zwei will show just how much she changed.

That a lot of fans are unwilling to forgive a child who acted like a child, especially one who eventually matured like she did, is pretty sad.

I just got done watching MO this past weekend. I had to vote for Arika, because uber-idealistic, wanna-be-everyone's-friend, Genki Girls just get to me, I guess. :) Mai was a close two, because she's just plain badass. Not enough screen time though.

I actually didn't have high expectations for this series, seeing how much I loved MH, but it surprised me. The plot was fairly decent I thought, and the fanservice wasn't as devilishly blatant as I was led to believe, and I really liked the character development. Yeah, the main characters were a bit more stereotypical than MH, but there was still a lot of interesting development between the main three characters that I enjoyed watching. Mashiro growing up into a real leader, Arika staying true to her dream even through the hard times, and Nina becoming so dark, yet still so remorseful at the end.

Would liked to have seen more Mai, though. :)

There are too many good characters to choose from.

Shizuru gets first place, and it'd be a surprise if she did not. Although I like her better in HiME, because she was genuinely scary and a very convincing psychopath. They toned her down significantly in Otome, though. At least they retained her accent.

Nao is definitely one cool girl in Otome, very resourceful, and drastically different from her HiME counterpart. Although I never really hated the Nao in HiME anyway. I've always thought that she was more misunderstood than evil in HiME.

I also find myself appreciating Arika's character. Personally, I don't think she is annoying, she is definitely mischievous and fun loving, but not annoying. She is optimistic and hard working, who sought after a goal and achieved it. Her powers weren't given to her as a freebie, she had to earn it throughout the series, and I think thats something of an inspiration for everyone. I guess I can say the same thing about Mai in HiME, sans the mischievous part.

Well, I can see why fans hate Sergay with passion, but sincerely I do not approve either. For me it's just a derailed character. Sadly, because he was quite good, and necessary, in the first half of show. I would have liked to see someone else in that 3rd spot, though XDDD

Yeah, I hate how sergay is bashed for dumb reasons, and poor tate suffers the same thing, but worse. I honestly think that most of the hate comes from the maiXmikoto shippers who feel he's some kind of obstacle.

That's mostly the case. You should see the treatment Yuuno Scrya from Nanoha receives. He is in almost the same position as Tate, with the exception that unlike Tate, his relationship with Nanoha is ambiguous. That makes the more rabid part of the yuri-side want to... well... eliminate him. Usually through flames and hate-art.

Same case for Tate. Though that doesn't really explains the Sergay hate, considering he rejected pretty much every girl he crossed.

I fear the day a new HiME or Otome season is introduced with a serious love interest for Natsuki (maybe what's-his-name from the kendo club could gets serious?).

Doubt that would occur in any other incarnation of the HIME universe.

Even in Mai Hime Destiny Novel, he was rejected...funny thing was his battle with Natsuki in the beginning of that story sort of triggered the rest of the events of different factions going to war with each other again with Natsuki ending up with Shizuru again LOL.

He ends up being some kind of road kill in even the newer story novels like that particular one. :heh:

Ah well...."Natsuki no Prelude" pretty much sealed the deal of his fate with Natsuki when Natsuki had sent him a letter of apology with an official rejection inside the letter. This scene took place around the events of episode 25 and on Volume 1 of the Mai Hime Animation data book (On the cliff just after speaking with Sakomizu-sensei, she reflects on this moment where she rejected Takeda and decided to accept someone elses feelings). Takeda apparently could not muster a reply when he received the letter so I assume he was devastated but I'm pretty sure a person like him could find happiness elsewhere. I think he's a strong enough character to bounce back.

Takeda is the Director Masakazu Obara's punching bag it seems since his favorite character is Shizuru and surprisingly enough Tomoe.:heh:

Well during the events in Mai Hime, it was difficult for anyone to get in touch with each other when they were being transferred or just moved to different locations (recall the time when Aoi and Chie had to leave Fuuka...that was the same time, Takeda himself had to leave therefore, he wasn't exactly easy to get a hold of...plus Natsuki was sort of in the middle of something like every other Hime.:heh:

I suppose she could have just officially rejected him in person during Shizuru and Takeda's graduation but then again, the rejection had already been sent as well as an apology for how she behaved towards him but she didn't exactly know she was going to be brought back to life lol.

By the way....if you're curious about the passage someone by the name of Apollyon_0 actually translated all of "Natsuki no Prelude"...it was something I had planned to do in the past but with limited time this person was much quicker (Did a decent job as well)

Great books...you'll also discover an implication that Natsuki was the first to awaken her abilities as a Hime during Middle-school. Nagi was the one who had mentioned it while he was observing a conversation between Natsuki and Shizuru from afar.

First, I agree that Sergey had a few blips of OOC dialogue and action. But all in all, I still really despised him at the end, mostly for his interactions with Nina. I mean, really, this guy is supposed to be her father (adoptive, but father nonetheless), and he treats Nina like a piece of garbage, knowing her attraction for him and using that to coerce her to commit numerous atrocities.

I just can't see any father that truly loves his children allowing anything like that to come to pass, duty to state bedamned.

But, I've never been a big Shizuru fan either, and I guess I can't understand why she has such popularity. Is it just the fangirls that are that into her, with the whole Ojousama appeal? Or is she actually that well liked by the male demographic? Mai seemed a MUCH more attractive character (personality-wise) than Shizuru in Hime, and Shizuru was pretty much a 1-D non-entity in Otome, IMHO, aside from some fanservice with Natsuki. I honestly thought there were a ton of more interesting characters in Otome.

But in either case, I think Shizuru in Hime and Sergey in Otome were different with regards to their "crimes." While Shizuru went nuts and murdered for Natsuki, she didn't really kill any innocents (First District and almost Nao, who pretty much asked for it), b) she committed the atrocities her self. Sergey, on the other hand, used guile and deceit to betray Arika, then betray his own country, then he manipulated his daughter's love for him to get HER to commit the atrocities for him, because he was too cowardly to either stand up to Nagi for his own daughter's sake (I mean, JESUS CHRIST MAN, it's your own freaking daughter whom you're messing up beyond repair), or do his lord's bidding on his own.

Added: Regarding Sergey's rejection of Arika and Nina's physical attraction, a) I always thought it odd that a daughter (adopted or not) would have that kind of attraction to her father. Arika I could understand, she was young and impressionable and he did seem to care for her on a few occasions, which could kindle those kinds of thoughts, I guess. Which, IMHO, just made his betrayal of her that much more revolting. But with Nina, he seemed to know all along the kinds of feelings she had, and instead of directly confronting her, working it out and working to protect his own daughter, he copped out, let it drag out, cowardly ducked any chance to actually resolve the situation until she already had the blood of thousands on her hands, and even then his "rejection" didn't seem to have any actual care for her involved. All in all, I'd say his whole relationship with Nina was just downright... odd. Almost like informed attributes. We're TOLD he loves her and cares about her, but his actions quite show otherwise (except for his lame attempt at a belated redemption at the end, I guess)...

It was the whole angsty, unrequited love thing in the beginning that really got to most of us. And her monologue within the drama CD just had 10x the effect because of how much she expressed her immense love for her and even she admitted to feeling that her own love was inappropriate because she was a fellow female. I suppose it's because a lot of fans can relate to her especially being lesbian and falling for someone that may or may not be straight. And Haruka mentioning that her love was rather vile just didn't help...in fact it just helped us support her even more.

Natsuki's backstory (Once again I'm quoting Natsuki No Prelude) has a particular scene where most of us Shizuru admires felt our heart wrench with the same sentiments. It was the time, that Natsuki had congratulated Shizuru for her Seto-kaichou victory. Natsuki had not known that Shizuru only ran for the presidency to assist Natsuki with her "research" but she never admitted that part to Natsuki.

When Natsuki had finally been given access to the intranet, due to Shizuru's political status, Natsuki had become excited over the matter. Shizuru had witnessed this from Natsuki and was quite moved. According to that short novel, she was so overwhelmed that she swiftly and lightly kissed the back of Natsuki's hair while Natsuki was looking up information.

So her heartwrenching, angsty love was the main part of her appeal but the other appeal was her sexy, badgirl appeal at the end too. Some of us just love complex, sexy characters with a secret love. And her aesthetic look also helps along with that damn sexy kyoto-ben that just drips from her mouth. Shindou Naomi, her seiyuu really is versatile.

I believe it was episode 3 or 4 (yes that early into the series) where Shizuru's "interests" were detected....that longing sideways glance. Someone had the audacity to say that perhaps that was a sisterly "look"...LOL, I'm sorry but I do NOT look at my sisters that way. That was indeed a lusty look when Natsuki was leaning over to view Shizuru's laptop monitor. :heh: It was that moment I knew right then, that something interesting was about to brew. And there were dozens of hints throughout the series. I suppose I just had my "gaydar" on?

Back in '04, I couldn't find myself liking someone like Mai. I would certainly take Natsuki over her because Mai was just way too boring of a character for me. True she developed this emo-factor halfway through but it was her fickleness that caused me to dislike her when Mai Hime first came out. Plus with her hairstyle, she looked like half the people in Shibuya during that time. It wasn't until Mai Otome, I began to like Mai....perhaps because she wasn't a main character before. Although the scene where Mai went semi-insane in Mai Hime was a real kick. DUring this period there were a lot of Japanese fanartists depicting this kind of behavior in their work. I even had a kick out of the Evil Mai "Pez dispenser that someone had drafted.:D

The think the only Mai I ever enjoyed and found extremely sexy and fascinating was evil Mai from the Otome Manga.

As for Mai Otome....a bunch of us were already hooked on that pairing so we just transferred over our admiration to the next series....and seeing Natsuki and Shizuru in those ass-tight outfits were very appealing to us NatShiz fans.

Hmmm....I'm one of those mid-30-ish year women that actually prefer Otome over Hime though. *shrugs*

Lol, forgot to answer this one....It was never really a "male fandom" though I DO know some males that support her...Shizuru's demographic is a rather LARGE female demographic that swing the same way that she does.

And if it were not for us fans that have empathetically put ourselves in her position, she would not have won so many Sunrise Character Polls like the recent one. It's not about bashing hetero characters but rather making an attempt to uplift someone other than the standard "straight" person on top billing. Other walks of life seek to have characters represent them and Shizuru was just that character to do so.

And if it were not for us fans that have empathetically put ourselves in her position, she would not have won so many Sunrise Character Polls like the recent one. It's not about bashing hetero characters but rather making an attempt to uplift someone other than the standard "straight" person on top billing. Other walks of life seek to have characters represent them and Shizuru was just that character to do so.


Ahh, I see. I can understand that. I personally don't like or dislike Shizuru as a character any more or less because of her sexual orientation. In truth, it wasn't even something I thought about, nor is it something I generally consider when it comes to either fiction or RL, truth be told. I strongly feel that personal choices like that shouldn't be cause for all the rage and prejudice we like to heap on them, especially in the States.

I don't particularly DISlike Shizuru's character, but otherwise I'm just middle of the road. I did like Natsuki's character, because of the immense development and the whole defrosting ice queen thing (which I always like development-wise). As for Mai, I guess I really like watching genuine and spunky characters who really want to do the right thing, but their own immaturity conflicts with their goals. And hopefully by the end, after a lot of hardships because of the immaturity, it gradually dissolves and is replaced by determination. I guess that's why I like characters like Arika from Otome, and Hitomi from Escaflowne too.

But I definitely appreciate hearing a point of view for why Shizuru is such a popular character. I think I have a little better understanding, now. :cool:

Well Tate didn't really bother me in the manga, though i hated how both Mai AND Natsuki were pawning over him, and I defiantly hated Natsuki's personality and how she was bitchy to Mai for no reason.

Actually I do not bash anyone. And, in my opinion, that's the stupidest thing that fandoms generated, along with shipping wars.
Of course, you are entitled not to like a character, but you should keep in mind that it behaves a certain way not because of another character or the circumstances, but just because the writers gave it some specific personality traits. And those are the things you hate.
Natsuki manga is bitchy with everyone because the writers wanted her that way, but hardly because they introduced Tate.
By the way, I don't like that her attitude too and I prefer so much Natsuki anime.

Yeah likewise on Natsuki. Poor Tate is always bashed for the dumbest reason, the most being, "he gets in the way for Mai and Mikoto to be a couple" when those 2 were never going to be a couple in the first place.

Characters are created in order to show us all kind of personalities of human world so actualy it is right not to like or hate some specific character since he/she was made in order to make people think about how he/she acts and why? As well as to start to think about yourself.

I've been an Akane fan since Hime. I don't know why, I just really liked her from the start. I was disappointed in Hime since she didn't get much screen time. After all, she was out of the game right after her powers were revealed. In Otome, it seems like the creators decided to make up for that by giving her a bigger role. She's the top pearl student and the leader of Trias. Her uniform is also different from the other pearl students. Her's is white rather than the standard gray. I actually haven't finished the series yet. I'm waiting for vol. 4 to get to me. Damn, I have every volume(including the ova zwei) except for 4 and I have to wait for rightstuf to get more shipments before I can continue the series.

Well, at least two of my favorite pairings made it to the list at third place. Arika/Mashiro for Otome, and Rena/S.ifr for S.ifr. A bit sad that Mai/Natsuki didn't make it, but trying to fight both Shiznat and TateMai away from was a bit too much I guess.

Still, could anyone translate the 4-10 pairings? I'm curious who else made the list.

I'm not saying I hate her but I just find Mai to be a better lead character than Arika. Though I do respect Arika for her courage and determination. I can relate to her as well. For instance, I want to be a film director as much as Arika wanting to be an Otome! ^_^
