View Full Version : Cultural References in My HiME / My Otome
After rewatchign the new Crystal Energy OP, I can't help but see the similarities between some Otome and MS from the Gundam universe. Here are some I noticed.
Arika's Azure of the Sapphire Sky= Destiny Gundam. Huge Honking Sword.
Nina Pure Black Diamond= Legend Gundam. Based on OP, Nina's got her own DRAGOON system.
Shizuru Graceful Amethsty= The Tailgeese III, due to her chain whip.
Yukariko: Either the GM Sniper or the Zaku Cannon.
Nao: The Zeong maybe, finger beam weapons.
Anyone got anything else to add?

The title should be changed to MO/Other Sunrise titles parrellels.
The Black Colum with a mask : Vega/Vega 2 from the G.E.A.R Senshi Dendoh series, another one of Fukuda's fine works.
The 3 Corals with funky hair = The 3 Generals of the Machine King Army.
Mai = Kamen Rider V3. Scarf, Rider Kick, Spinning wheel belt. Sure, it's not Sunrise but still....

I dunno, I mean DESTINY's sword isn't anymore different than the other anti-ship swords which Strike, Daggers, and Impulse used. That and the sword is a double sword, not one long blade. Someone posted pictures to compare between Mai Otome and such and they compared OL's true form to her sword.

And Artai's tanks look a little similar to the ABC's from Reboot (Those tanks that Megabyte uses)

No screen catch feature, plus my comp's a bit wonky so not going to try. However, during the last scene in the OP immediately after Arika turns up into the sky, we see Nina with small black crystals flying around her.
Not sure if this means they act like dragoons, but they sure look like them.

Um...those are shards of something or whatever they are. Their in various size too so Nina probably broke something.

The entire Erstin thing is definitly a Lalah Sune moment...after that I can't see that many similarities.

Lunamaria -> Midori and Meyrin -> Yohko:
Midori and Yohko have some past together. Yohko's appearance surprised Midori and like stopped her from attacking Natsuki. I find this parallel-ish to how Meyrin was like "Zomg no sis" near the end of GSD. Plus, Reito/Rad's voice actor is the same as Rey's, and Rey and Lunamaria were like the same side and then Meyrin was on the other one, so, yeah that works.
Miriallia -> Akane and Tolle -> Kazuya
Man it's obvious. Plus Tolle died in SEED and Kazuya "died" in HiME, but he 100% lives in the AU thing, so, yeah.

Lacus as Tomoe is a voice actor joke because they're both voiced by Tanaka Rie. Miya is a phonetic joke because the way Meer is pronounced sounds similar to Miya.
Sting / Auel -> Chie / Aoi
Sting's dress makes him seem womanly (come on guys he wore a purple tube top) and Chie's dress makes her seem manly. Plus I am a sucker for Sting x Auel. D:

Though, I am a tad disappointed for Mai's double. Fllay "Mind so small ya can't see it" Allaster? 'Zeta era' Amuro would fit the mold much better, I think. :)
Though, I did note that you did pay respects to Char and for that, your sins are forgiven. :p

My original post clearly stated in the title it was SEED and Otome, but someone decided to merge it here... Trying to find serious parallelism to all of Gundam != Joke Comparisons to SEED. Anyway... SEED was used it because it and HiME/Otome are both recent. Fllay was chosen for Mai because it's something you wouldn't expect and as I stated that was written for amusement.
I know it's a joke. I just take things a tad too far, like usual. :p

Come to think of it, in both animes you have males and females. They have two eyes, two legs, two arm, one nose... it's almost the same! And now that you mention this it reminds me of DBZ too! I mean. Again males and females. People fighting and everything.
And yes, the weapons! One more cheap copy series that is not capable of creating completely new weapons that have never been seen before!! That is a fact that hit me right after the first ep. And clothings. You remember the clothings!!! Arikas new outfit in the op, it's blue and white. Now Freedom is blue and white too. This can't be a coinsidence.
Parallels everywhere!!!!! This must be a giant conspiracy among anime producers. Thank you for opening my eyes to this truth of the world!

I can honestly only see two paralles. The Murasames and the Valkeriyes share animation for their transformations and the whole being willingly used by schemeing mad man that Nina has in common with Shinn.

Nina vs Arika head to head is from Gundam
typhoon Nina vs Otomes is from Char's Counter Attack
Rena Sayers is from Dendoh. So is Sara Gallager/Black Vega
Arika and Nina yuri moment in space in the end really reminded of Kannazuki no Miko. The Gundam references are too many to count.
An amnesiac Sergey being taken care of by Nina beside his bed makes allusion to Princess Tutu.

I can't comment on the first two but big beam blasts are hardly unique to any particular show. The scene where she shoots at the palace cannon is more reminiscent of NGE than anything else.
